Service

Welcome to 2019 and a new year of opportunities to make a contribution to our school community and also to the wider community in Australia and abroad. Service at Redlands is about developing in students an appreciation of the good fortune that many of us experience and also how we can use our skills, efforts and time to contribute to improving our local community and the world around us.

Service learning activities are a part of our Pastoral Program; there is a specific theme for each Year Group in the Secondary School.

  • Yr 7 – How we shape, impact and contribute to our school and local community
  • Yr 8 – How we can positively impact our physical environment, with a particular focus on marine conservation and recycling.
  • Yr 9 – Addressing inequality in Australia, students will explore the many forms of inequality in society and the implications. Tutor Groups will be selecting specific issues to explore in depth.
    • Many students in Yr 9 are also beginning the Duke of Edinburgh program which has a Service element.
    • Students may have signed up to participate in the Fiji Service program that involves a series of planning and learning workshops as well as fundraising prior to undertaking a Service focused trip to Fiji.
  • Yr 10 – Homelessness and its causes. We examine the impacts and implications for individuals and society.
    • Students may have signed up to participate in the Arnhem Land Service program that involves a series of planning and learning workshops as well as fundraising prior to undertaking a cultural understanding trip to Arnhem Land.
  • Yrs 11 and 12 – Students in both the HSC and IB programs are expected to be involved in Service activities throughout the year, planning and implementing their own activities in consultation with their Tutors.
    • Students in Yr 11 have potentially signed up to participate in either the Tanzania or Cambodia program that will also involve a series of planning and learning workshops as well as fundraising prior to undertaking these Service and cultural exchange trips.
Upcoming Service at Redlands

We are planning another active Service program for the coming year. Some events to put into your diary for Semester 1 include:

  • 3 March – Clean Up Australia Day. This is a whole school activity. The Service and Environment Captains will be helping to communicate to students the importance of our involvement in the opportunity to give back to our local community
  • 12 May – Mother’s Day Classic. Another whole school activity, where students and their families can sign up to participate in the walk/run in support of Breast Cancer research.
  • End of May – Red Shield Appeal Door Knock with the Salvation Army. This is an annual commitment that involves our Yrs 11 and 12 students.

There will be more specific information on all of these events in the coming weeks.
