The refurbishment of the Junior Campus oval is making excellent progress and we are anticipating that it will be ready for use, weather permitting, from the end of March.
The benefits of the synthetic sports turf are that is it not detrimentally impacted by drought or excessive rain and will therefore allow for increased use of the oval. The design also provides the benefit of being able to water the surface of the oval during hot weather, if required, in order to cool the surface.
In the selection of the surface we worked with Smart Connection Consultancy who are the technical consultants to various sporting organisations in Australia and also to local government, including North Sydney Council and the City of Sydney. We also engaged specific geotechnical specialists to establish the best sub-base for the synthetic surface.
To ally some expressed concerns regarding the rubber infill, ‘virgin rubber’ has been specified. This is made from materials that reflect the properties of natural rubber instead of styrene butadiene rubber which is made from recycled tyres. The use of virgin rubber (which is light in colour compared with SBR which is black) will assist with heat reduction.
The School has settled into its regular rhythm this week and the first of our annual School Camps is taking place at our High Country Campus at Jindabyne, allowing our new Year 7 students to socially integrate and get to know each other.
Last Saturday I enjoyed watching a number of our Secondary Girls Touch Football teams participating in a Gala Competition at Macquarie Playing Fields. Despite drizzling rain, they coped well with the slippery conditions and were enjoying some good wins and showing their skills.

Trust
In some of my opening messages to staff and students over the past few weeks, I have shared with them that a focus for the Secondary School this year is to continue to build and strengthen that sense of trust amongst and between all facets of our community. Over the holidays one of the books I read was about trust and, not surprisingly, how important it is for all successful organisations, but especially schools. I believe that our sense of community and the trust between staff, students and parents is already a strength of the school; however, as a quote I have already shared in other contexts states, that does not mean it is not “too good not to be better”.
So, I thought I would share below some of my remarks from my opening assembly address to students about “trust” to you, as well.
“The Philadelphia 76ers men’s professional Basketball team have had a mantra for the past few years which states, ‘Trust the process’ as the players have grown and developed as individuals and as a team. As students, in many ways, you also have to “trust the process”, specifically the care, commitment and expertise of your teachers and the staff at Redlands, to guide and support you over your schooling journey.
Over my first two years at Redlands, I am pleased to say that I have found the trust between staff, students and parents very strong in the Secondary School. It is a sense of trust very much embedded in our core values of:
Honesty – so we can be open and truthful with each other
Responsibility – being accountable for our own actions
Compassion – illustrating care and empathy for one another
Fairness – treating others justly and impartially
Moral Courage – showing character in the face of ethical challenges
And, maybe most of all, of Respect – respect in ourselves but also respect for all of the other people who assist us in our schooling.
Therefore, I am proud to be part of a community that does not tolerate bullying or intimidation but instead values encouragement and support.
I am proud to be a part of a community that does not stereotype or discriminate others based on gender, race, ethnicity or sexuality, but instead celebrates everyone’s individual differences.
And I am proud to be a part of a community that is full of gratitude not spite; selflessness not selfishness; and hope not cynicism.
I encourage you over the course of this year to strengthen that sense of trust in your teachers, in your peers and maybe most of all, in yourself, so that you can have a most enriching and successful school year ahead.
Judith Locke Presentation
In an ever-changing world, parents are constantly wondering how they can best support their child. As part of our on-going efforts to support parents and provide them with useful information and recent research on ‘best practice’, we are excited to announce that clinical psychologist and author, Dr Judith Locke, will be coming to Redlands to present two workshops for parents around how you can support your child to become more confident and capable. These workshops are designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal bests, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. Judith will provide advice as to how to support your child in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help your child become more independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school.
Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, and former teacher and workplace trainer. She is now director of the training company, Confident and Capable, which delivers psychological solutions for parents, students and organisations. Judith works with families and individuals in her private practice in Toowong, Qld. She also undertakes research at QUT, investigating modern parenting, student and parent wellbeing, and their interaction with the academic environment. Judith is a member of The Australian Psychological Society (APS) and a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. She is also the author of the popular parenting book, The Bonsai Child: Why modern parenting limits children’s potential and practical strategies to turn it around.
The Secondary School session will be held on Monday 25 February from 6.00pm in Redlands Hall. Please note these sessions are for parents only and you should not bring your children.
Study Centre
After positive feedback from our initial offerings last year, we are further expanding our before and after school Study Centre for students. The Study Centre will take place Monday from 7.30 – 8:15am and 4.30 – 6.00pm and Tuesday and Wednesday from 7.30 – 8.15am and 3.30 – 6.00pm. The aim of the Study Centre is to provide students from Yrs 7-12 with the opportunity to receive shoulder-to-shoulder support or assistance in specific disciplines from Secondary School teachers. These sessions are not to be seen as formalised one-on-one tutoring sessions but instead should be seen as opportunities for students to get assistance or feedback on specific areas of learning. While the Study Centre will take place in the Library for most subjects, some more practical subjects will hold these in specialised spaces. The Study Centre will commence in Week 3 and a schedule of offerings can be found on the Secondary School page of Redlands Pulse.
Parking and Pick Up
We appreciate the challenges of parking, as well as the drop off and pick up of students, around the Secondary School, and thank the majority of parents who follow proper guidelines. However, we have had recent reports of some unsafe practices during drop off and pick up of students around the Campus before or after school. Once again, we ask parents to use the designated drop off and pick up zones on Waters Road and not to double park in local streets or pull into the bus parking lot in front of the Adams Centre. The safety of our students, members of our community and members of the wider community is paramount.
And lastly, please may I remind you to be respectful and considerate of our neighbours. It is not acceptable to block or even park in someone’s driveway as has already been reported to us. Please also be mindful of noise on local streets, especially during early morning drop offs for before school activities. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and support.
Please review this summary from the North Sydney Council of some of the more important rules and the associated penalties for not complying with the rules regarding parking around schools. As demerit points are now attached to parking offences in school zones, it is important that parents are aware that breaches of these rules can lead to the suspension of their drivers licence.
This will be held on Monday 11 February in Redlands Hall. A letter with details of the evening has been sent to all parents and carers. The Yr 10 presentation commences at 6.00pm, Yr 12 at 6.40pm and Yr 11 at 7.20pm.

Five interstate students have the chance to win a scholarship, whilst fee-paying places are also available. Applications close on 24 February. More information here.
Redlands is a SAT Test Centre
A reminder that Redlands is a SAT test centre and will host all six SAT exams (needed for American university applications) scheduled this year: 9 March, 4 May, 1 June, 5 October, 2 November and 7 December. The exam is hosted in the Junior School and registrations are via Collegeboard. Please note that as Redlands is the only consistent test centre in Sydney, places fill fast so registering early is key! If you have any issues please contact Ms Salier directly. A session on the SAT will be held for students in Week 6 during Tutor Time.
Thank you to all the students who were at the trials on Friday last week. Masters Academy commented on the high quality of students who have registered to debate this year. Some students who missed trials should contact me asap if you would like to join a team. Please note that these teams carry on to Term 2. Students who are not on these teams may not be able to have the opportunity to competitively debate this year as preference will be given to FED and ISDA debaters when choosing SDN teams in Term 3. Teams will be announced by email to students early next week. If you do not receive an email, please contact me in L.2.3 on Tuesday as it is our intention to place all registered students in a team.
More about these competitions and about Debating in general is in the Debating section on Redlands Pulse.
Debating Club runs on a Wednesday afternoon and is also conducted by Masters Academy. More information on how to register for this is here. Debating Club will begin next week and, based on interest, we are looking into the possibility of running an extra day/timeslot. Please register your interest with Masters Academy info@mastersacademy.com.au
Please read the Debating Expectations section under special programs on Redlands Pulse and feel free to chat with me or with Ela Kos, our Debating Captain, before you decide to make the commitment.
Welcome to 2019 and a new year of opportunities to make a contribution to our school community and also to the wider community in Australia and abroad. Service at Redlands is about developing in students an appreciation of the good fortune that many of us experience and also how we can use our skills, efforts and time to contribute to improving our local community and the world around us.
Service learning activities are a part of our Pastoral Program; there is a specific theme for each Year Group in the Secondary School.
Yr 7 – How we shape, impact and contribute to our school and local community
Yr 8 – How we can positively impact our physical environment, with a particular focus on marine conservation and recycling.
Yr 9 – Addressing inequality in Australia, students will explore the many forms of inequality in society and the implications. Tutor Groups will be selecting specific issues to explore in depth.
Many students in Yr 9 are also beginning the Duke of Edinburgh program which has a Service element.
Students may have signed up to participate in the Fiji Service program that involves a series of planning and learning workshops as well as fundraising prior to undertaking a Service focused trip to Fiji.
Yr 10 – Homelessness and its causes. We examine the impacts and implications for individuals and society.
Students may have signed up to participate in the Arnhem Land Service program that involves a series of planning and learning workshops as well as fundraising prior to undertaking a cultural understanding trip to Arnhem Land.
Yrs 11 and 12 – Students in both the HSC and IB programs are expected to be involved in Service activities throughout the year, planning and implementing their own activities in consultation with their Tutors.
Students in Yr 11 have potentially signed up to participate in either the Tanzania or Cambodia program that will also involve a series of planning and learning workshops as well as fundraising prior to undertaking these Service and cultural exchange trips.
Upcoming Service at Redlands
We are planning another active Service program for the coming year. Some events to put into your diary for Semester 1 include:
3 March – Clean Up Australia Day. This is a whole school activity. The Service and Environment Captains will be helping to communicate to students the importance of our involvement in the opportunity to give back to our local community
12 May – Mother’s Day Classic. Another whole school activity, where students and their families can sign up to participate in the walk/run in support of Breast Cancer research.
End of May – Red Shield Appeal Door Knock with the Salvation Army. This is an annual commitment that involves our Yrs 11 and 12 students.
There will be more specific information on all of these events in the coming weeks.

Year 12
Pastoral Care
It is great to see Yr 12 have started the year with the right attitude and frame of mind. We are only a couple of weeks into the new school year and our boys and girls seem to have already switched from summer holiday mode to productive work mode. The focus of Tutor Time this week is dedicated for refocusing and planning, through setting personal goals and checking assessment notifications. Mindfulness activities led by Tutors have also been implemented to provide strategies for students to cope better with their busy lives and keeping cool, especially as multiple deadlines are approaching at times. We would also like to reinforce a message to all students that “you have a broad network of support and all you need to do is to simply ask for help.”
Study Skills
Just a reminder that all parents and students are able to access to Dr Prue Salter’s online Study Skills resource(www.studyskillshandbook.com.au): School username: redlands password: 68results
There are some useful and relevant resources for both Yr 12 students and parents, such as how to keep track and schedule using the Planner effectively and mental health strategies. Dr Prue Salter will also run a Yr 12 workshop on Monday 2 September during school time, which is designed to prepare students for their HSC/IB exams.
Careers and Universities
It is strongly recommended to all Yr 12 students that they, if they have not already, make an appointment with Ms Salier (Careers and Universities Advisor) during this term. They can do this by emailing an expression of interest and available times. Possible times include Tutor Time, Recess, Lunch Time, a study period or after school. Regular appointments are best as plans can change, opportunities can arise and keeping updated with academic progress is important. Parents are welcome to attend these meetings with prior notice to ensure you have a seat. Every Tutor Time on Thursday this term will be dedicated to guest speakers from various universities to introduce their latest news such as ANU, UNSW, Sydney University and UCL.
An Information Evening specifically for Yr 12 will be held on Monday 11 February at 6.40pm for 40 mins at Redlands Hall.
Yr 12 HSC/ IB Parent Teacher Night
The Yr 12 HSC/IB Parent Teacher Night will be held on Wednesday 13 Feburary in Redlands Gym, from 5.00 – 8.00pm. An email has been sent out to all parents with the link to request appointments. Cambodia Service Learning Opportunity
In the December school holidays, students from our Year Group have the opportunity to travel to Cambodia and immerse themselves in Cambodian life. Redlands has had a connection with Cambodia for over 20 years and this will be the third year we have partnered with Antipodeans to provide this opportunity for Yr 11 students.
Students engage in a range of cultural immersion and Service activities including:
Working on a community project in a remote village located near Siem Reap. Last year’s group helped build and renovate a patient room at the community hospital.
A guided tour of the Killing Fields and Touel Sleng S21 Genocide Museum
A visit to M’Lop Tapang. This organisation was founded by a Redlander back in 2003 as an initiative to offer safety to vulnerable children. The organisation now works with over 5000 children and families to provide services, meals, shelter, medical care and education. Throughout the day students are introduced to some of M’Lop Tapang’s services and participate in a Child Safe presentation.
A day tour of Angkor Archaeological Park, which includes the famous Angkor Wat temple
This program gives students a wide range of experiences, while developing their understanding of Cambodian culture and history. It is designed to both educate and challenge students, helping them to embrace the concept of being a global citizen.
Please note, this program involves fundraising to support the community project and M’Lop Tapang organisation. Students are also required to complete six after school learning sessions to help prepare and maximise their experiences in Cambodia.
All parents and students are invited to find out more at the Information Evening on Thursday 21 February at 6.00pm in Redlands Hall. Any questions should be directed to Simon Colyer.

During this term, Yr 10 will be exploring the themes of Racism and Cyber Racism during our Tutor Time. Tutors will be using the Face up to Racism online educational resource which was written by the NSW Department of Education and journalists from SBS. Results from a study commissioned by SBS with the University of Western Sydney reveal that one in five Australians has experienced racism in the last 12 months. This study has been one of the largest conducted to focus specifically on racism and prejudice in Australia. We feel that now is an important time for our Yr 10 students to gain an understanding about the reasons, consequences and prevention of both racism and cyber racism so that they will become responsible and empathetic global citizens.

Yr 9 (and many other Year Groups) will be running a birthday celebration initiative for each Tutor Group on a Monday morning. All students will be assigned a buddy who they are responsible for helping celebrate their birthdays for that coming week. If there is more than one birthday in the week then both or all will be celebrated on that Monday. The aim is to spend time thinking about each other and celebrating special moments for all, helping to bond as a Tutor Group. The initiative is not supposed to be onerous or expensive, and it is hoped that the buddy will actually bake a cake themselves rather than buy it. I am confident that the students will enjoy this opportunity to socialise with their Tutor Group and get to know each other better. If you have any questions about this initiative, please contact your Tutor.
Support Information Evening for Parents of Teens
You may be interested to know that at Mosman Art Gallery, Art Gallery Way, Mosman, on Thursday 28 February from 6.30 – 8.30pm, there is a free event being run that aims to offer direct support to parents regarding issues such as mental health, drugs and alcohol, youth services and parenting skills. For further information, please contact either admin@phoenixhouse.org.au or 9437 0077.
Fiji Opportunity
A reminder of the Fiji Service learning opportunity in the October school holidays. Students from our Year Group have the opportunity to travel to Fiji and immerse themselves in Fijian life. This is the third year that Redlands has partnered with Rustic Pathways to provide this opportunity for Yr 9 students.
The trip is split into two sections. The first is spent in a highlands village, where students are accommodated via a homestay program and engage in a range of cultural immersion and Service activities. Following this, students return to the coast at Rustic Pathways Momi Bay Base. During this time, students work with a Marine Biologist to assist and learn about environmental management of the surrounding reef and coastal area.
This program gives students a wide range of experiences, whilst developing their understanding of the Fijian culture. It is designed to both educate and challenge students, helping them to embrace the concept of being a global citizen.

Thank you all for your wishes and generosity in farewelling Ms Walker. Gifts were shared with her on Wednesday during our Year Meeting. Her final day is Friday this week. We wish her and her husband the warmest of wishes as they embark on this new and exciting journey with their baby girl.
Pastoral Care
During Tutor Time this week, students were introduced to the topic of risk taking through a conversation format. Objectives of the session included:
To explore personal and shared experiences with risk-taking
To begin to understand the role of risk taking in the context of adolescent development and emotional regulation.
Pictured is Mr Okawa’s Tutor Group who finished their session enjoying ‘safe risks’ by playing a game of Sushi Jenga!

Readings
Last week, on my way home, I was listening to a fantastic conversation on the Drive program on ABC Radio Sydney with Professor Adrian Piccoli, who was discussing his recent book 12 Ways Your Child Can Get The Best Out Of School. Aimed at parents, the book sets out clear tips and hints you can engage with to help children receive the quality education they deserve. I’ve added it to my reading list and thought some of you may also be interested. Adrian Piccoli served as a Member of NSW Parliament for 19 years, and was the NSW Minister for Education for six years until 2017. He is currently the Director of UNSW’s Gonski Institute for Education.
If you ordered a sibling photograph, please note that they will take place on Wednesday 13 March. Over the course of any given school year, Redlands seeks to provide opportunities for parents to be part of both our learning journey and your child’s and we place great value in this partnership.
I am delighted to share three upcoming sessions for parents as summarised below with additional detail below and I hope some or all of the topics may be of interest to you. I look forward to attending all three sessions with both my school and parent hats on!

As the areas of focus are different for children in the Junior School compared to those in the Secondary School, Judith is holding two separate workshops. The Junior School session will be held in Redlands Hall (Senior Campus) at 5.30-7.30pm on Tuesday 26 February with the Secondary School session held the day before on Monday 25 February. Please note these sessions are for parents only and you should not bring your children.
Parent Seminar: Positive Behaviour Support For Learning
Over the first week, our Prep and Junior School teachers, in collaboration with their students, have been developing classroom behavioural agreements. These agreements outline the explicit behaviours that support learning, develop positive relationships and ensure safe and well-organised environments.
You may have noticed these agreements published in your child’s classroom when you attended our ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions. Our framework is based upon the Positive Behaviour Support for Learning approach (PBS4L). The underlying assumption of PBS4L is that children’s behaviour can change positively as a function of actions performed by others in a supportive and caring environment.
At Redlands, this approach complements our School Values, is supported by our culture of thinking pedagogy, and aligns with the core social and emotional competencies we aim to develop within this stage of childhood. If you would like to know more, I encourage you to join us at a parent seminar on Tuesday 5 March at 8.30am in the Arnold Library (Junior School), where Mr Nigel Coutts (Dean of Teaching and Learning) and I will be sharing our contemporary and innovative approaches that support your child’s learning and wellbeing at Redlands.
Junior School Sport
It was wonderful to see our Junior School students enjoy their first summer sports session yesterday afternoon. The students have a wonderful range of team and lifestyle sports available to them and as they headed off to play basketball, cricket, tennis, golf, or swim, surf, sail or stand-up paddleboard, I must confess to having some envy as I went off to a meeting and then to finish this article!
Best wishes to our Basketball, Tennis and Cricket teams who begin their Saturday representative seasons this weekend. Have fun!
Choose Safety Over Convenience
Thank you for your continued cooperation as our families get to grips with new parking and pick-up arrangements. For families using the car line process, please remind your child to wait with the duty teacher at the Junior School gate and please also be reminded not to push into the line or double park for obvious safety reasons.
Both parents and teachers have raised a concern about parents parking illegally adjacent to the pedestrian crossing and I remind you of the serious dangers that this raises.
Please review this summary from the North Sydney Council of some of the more important rules and the associated penalties for not complying with the rules regarding parking around schools. As demerit points are now attached to parking offences in school zones, it is important that parents are aware that breaches of these rules can lead to the suspension of their drivers licence.
Twilight in the Piazza
The first social gathering for all Redlands families is edging closer; our annual Twilight in the Piazza cocktail evening between 6.00-8.00pm on Friday 22 February on the Junior Campus. This promises to be another wonderful community event and to book tickets, please click on the image below. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Staffing News
This week, we welcomed our new eLearning Facilitator, Mrs Argiro Anagnostu, who joins Mrs Winrow in our ICT eLearning team on the Junior Campus.
Argiro will be familiar to teachers and students as she has assisted with a number of our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) projects in recent years whilst studying for her Masters of Learning Science and Technology, focusing specifically on research into ICT supported learning. She has also enjoyed facilitating inquiry-based projects for the Big Dig. I know that you will join me in welcoming Argiro to her new role at Redlands.
Year Parent Representatives
Thank you to parents who have sent their names through to Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School Office offering to be a Year Group parent this year. As mentioned last week, In a slight change from previous years, the RPFA are aiming to have one parent per class, who will collaborate with other parents from across that Year Group to organise Year Group events and foster greater connection across the parent group.
Year Group Parent Contact Lists
Year Group Parent Contact lists will be emailed to all Junior School families tomorrow (Friday). Please be reminded that these are strictly for school-based purposes and not for any aspect of commercial use.
This week, Prep School invited parents for Meet the Teacher afternoon to share information pertaining to the upcoming year. Not only is this event important to gain an understanding of the mechanics of the year, but more notably, parents develop an appreciation of the significant role they play in their child’s education. Substantial evidence exists showing that parent involvement is advantageous for children by increasing their motivation for learning, improving behaviour and acquiring a more positive attitude about home learning. Equally, teachers and parents have the same desire; for their children to be successful at whatever they are doing. A mutual respect for one another, a common focus and goal and clear communication are essential ingredients for a positive year. Not surprisingly, research shows that the more parents and teachers share relevant information with each other, the better equipped both will be to help the student achieve at school.
Both parents and teachers have an important role to play; their roles do not replace but rather compliment and reinforce the other’s role, thus providing the student with a consistent message about learning. Thinking of parents and teachers as “partners” refers to this mutual effort toward a shared goal. It also implies shared responsibility of parents and teachers for supporting students as learners (Christenson & Sheridan, 2001).

Orders for sibling photographs can be placed online. Orders will close on Tuesday 19 February
A photograph will not be taken without an order. Sibling photographs only apply to children enrolled at the school.
Seesaw
Families from Redlands House and perhaps those of you coming from various preschools, have had the opportunity to view some learning experiences throughout the year via Storypark. In Prep, we can now extend this opportunity by having the students use creative tools through technology to capture and reflect their learning whilst choosing their own pieces to share with families. Seesaw gives you a window into your child’s classroom and into their learning. Students and teachers will use Seesaw to reflect and grow in areas of Literacy, Numeracy, Units of Inquiry and specialist subjects, and to showcase the wonderful things they are doing in the classroom.
It is important to note that technology is only one of the many learning tools available to our students. The use of exercise books, butchers’ paper, worksheets and other resources, still have an important place within the learning environment. Learning moments captured on Seesaw will not always represent ‘polished’ finished pieces. Rather, the samples will be indicative of a variety of learning experiences and reflective of the ongoing process or journey of learning. Seesaw also provides a safe environment for parents and students to comment on their own learning, in real time.
If you would like to learn more about this learning platform and the way technology is used in the classroom, e-Learning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow, will be holding a Learning and Technology Information Session on Wednesday 20 February at 8.30am in the Lucy Hill Library. To help provide us with an indication of numbers, please RSVP here.
Car Line Procedures
This week saw car line begin in the Preparatory School. It is to be expected that the first week of car line is busy and new families to the School are using this facility for the first time. For parents new to the School, Prep car line was implemented two years ago to give families the convenience of staying in their car to collect their child. This eliminated the need for finding a car park at an already very busy time of day, easing congestion and keeping the children safe. This also meant, families with younger children could keep their child inside the car whilst collecting their older sibling. Staff gladly spend the extra time in their day providing this service to our community and I would like to remind all families to be considerate in their interactions when using the car line.
Thank you for following the important safety guidelines below when using car line.
Please only come at the designated times for your child; Kindergarten 2.45 – 3.00pm and Yrs 1, 2 and siblings 3.05 – 3.20pm. If you come earlier, please do not park along Allister Street, as this impedes the car line.
Students who are unable to independently secure themselves with a seatbelt are not permitted to use car line. Teachers, parents and carers are not able to assist, due to the added time and congestion.
Please place your name card clearly on the passenger side visor for easier visibility.
Please do not overtake cars in the car line – if you miss the line you will have to drive around the block and attach to the end of the car line queue.
Parking Guidelines
Please review this summary from the North Sydney Council of some of the more important rules and the associated penalties for not complying with the rules regarding parking around schools. As demerit points are now attached to parking offences in school zones, it is important that parents are aware that breaches of these rules can lead to the suspension of their drivers licence.
Collection Procedures for the Meeting Trees
If you are not using car line and collecting children from the Meeting Trees, could I please remind parents of the following pick-up times:
Kindergarten – 2.45pm
Yrs 1 and 2 – 3.00pm
Understandably, this is a busy time of day and I would also remind you that it is never appropriate to leave siblings in the car whilst you are coming into the School to collect your child. I urge you to read this very important message from Kids Safe.
If a Prep student has a sibling in the Junior School, it is not possible to have students wait in the Prep Reception area until their sibling finishes school at 3.20pm. Staff are unavailable to watch students and often the Reception area doesn’t have a staff member present, which would mean students would be left alone. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Positive Behaviour Support 4 Learning
As mentioned in previous correspondence, this week the teachers have been developing, in collaboration with their students, classroom behavioural agreements. These agreements outline the explicit behaviours that support learning, develop positive relationships and ensure safe and well-organised environments. You may have noticed these agreements in your child’s classroom when you attended our Meet the Teacher Information Sessions. Our framework is based upon the Positive Behaviour Support for Learning approach (PBS4L). The underlying assumption of PBS4L is that children’s behaviour adapts positively as a function of actions performed by others in a supportive and caring environment. At Redlands, this approach compliments our school values, is supported by our culture of thinking pedagogy and aligns with the core social and emotional competencies we aim to develop within this stage of childhood. PBS4L is a strength-based approach, hinging on preventative classroom strategies that guide and encourage the behaviours that optimise children’s learning. If you would like to know more, please come along to the parent seminar on Tuesday 5 March at 8.30am in the Arnold Library (Junior School). Mr Nigel Coutts (Dean of Teaching and Learning) and Mrs Sam Kourakis (Dean of Student Wellbeing) will be sharing their contemporary and innovative approaches that support your child’s learning and wellbeing at Redlands. In particular, Mrs Kourakis will be presenting a summary of the PBS4L approach. All are very welcome.
Dr Judith Locke – Parent Presentation
In an ever-changing world, parents are constantly wondering how they can best support their child. As part of our on-going efforts to support parents and provide them with useful information and recent research on ‘best practice’, we are excited to announce that Clinical Psychologist and author Dr Judith Locke will be coming to Redlands to present a workshop for parents around how to support their child to become confident and capable. This workshop is designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal best, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. Dr Locke will provide advice as to how to support your child in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help your child become independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school.
Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, and former teacher and workplace trainer. She is now Director of the training company, Confident and Capable, which delivers psychological solutions for parents, students and organisations. She is the author of the popular parenting book The Bonsai Child: Why modern parenting limits children’s potential and practical strategies to turn it around.
The Junior Campus session will be held on Tuesday 26 February from 5.30 – 7.30pm in Redlands Hall on the Senior Campus. Please note this session is for parents only.
Twilight in the Piazza
I look forward to seeing families at Twilight in the Piazza, our first parent event for the year on Friday 22 February. This is a lovely opportunity to meet new families to the School and acquaint yourself with the Executive and other members of the community.
Clubs
Prep will be using the Trybooking system to organise the registration of your child’s Prep Club. Prep Clubs are run by teachers on Wednesday afternoons from 3.00 – 4.00pm for Yrs 1 and 2 students only. They are designed to be an hour of fun activity and provide children with an opportunity to mix with students in a new group, made up of both year levels. If you would like your child to take part in the Clubs program this year, for which there is no additional cost, please refer to the letter that was emailed to families yesterday. All registrations will be made on a first in, first served basis and at this stage children are required to choose one Club for this term. Choices for Term 2 will be made using the same procedure toward the end of Term 1. Clubs will commence on Wednesday 13 February and will finish Wednesday 3 April. Please note there will be no clubs during Prep Teacher Meeting week on Wednesday 20 March.
Year/Class Parent Representatives
This year, class parents in each year level will work more closely together to create greater community connection by organising events across the Year Group. Year Group Parent Contact Lists
Year Group Parent Contact lists will be emailed to all Prep School families tomorrow (Friday). Please be reminded that these are strictly for school-based purposes and not for any aspect of commercial use.
What a fabulous first full week we are having in Redlands House and Transition Gold. We are off to a flying start as becoming familiar with all the children’s interests and their unique personalities. We look forward to the year ahead as an opportunity to observe each child in great detail, helping them to develop their skills and competencies. The children are already developing wonderful friendships with new and old class mates.
Parking
Parking around the school can be challenging, especially around pick up time. We urge Transition Gold and Preschool parents to collect their child in a timely manner to allow other parents to access car spaces. To ease congestion and ensure the safety of our students, the Preparatory School use a car line that enables parents to collect their children from the underground car park from 2.45pm each day. We therefore ask Redlands House families to refrain from parking in the five minutes parking zone outside the Preschool from 2.45pm onwards. Families are welcome to park and collect their child from 2.15pm. If you arrive after 2.45pm, you will be not permitted to park in the car line zone.
Gong Xi Fa Cai
Redlands House will be celebrating Chinese New Year with a special celebration on the 13 February. We would love family and special friends to join us. This occasion will be celebrated in the garden from 9.00am until 10.30am. If you are able to assist, please contact Mrs Thomas and Ms Hamilton. They will be holding a planning meeting on Thursday 7 February at 2.45pm in the Transition Gold classroom.
School Photographs
Individual photos for Redlands House and Transition Gold classes will be taken on the following days by Sandpit photography:
Tuesday 12 March – Orange Class Juniors, Yellow Class Seniors, Blue Class Seniors, Transition Gold
Thursday 14 March – Orange Class Seniors, Yellow Class Juniors, Blue Class Juniors
If you would like your Redlands House child to have a school photo with their older siblings who are in the Preparatory or Junior Schools, please attend the sibling photo day on Friday 22 February. Please see details about this here.
Student Council
Last Wednesday, our Senior students started their Student Council Meetings. During this time, the children gather around the sand pit and discuss matters pertaining to Redlands House and their day. This week the discussion was based around why the children have a student council meeting. Each week the transcript of the meeting is available for families to view and revisit.

Still to this day what I remember most fondly of my years at school was the experiences and lessons I learnt through sport. I participated in a broad range of activities throughout my school life and enjoyed a variety of subjects. Yet, I still feel some of the most valuable life lessons I learned were from the fields, gyms and pools of the sports in which I competed, the coaching I received and the friendships I developed.
Schools, and the curriculum within them, are frequently questioned and discussed in society and are often used as a tool for governments jostling for votes and political power. However, school sport, and its value to a student’s overall education, has remained a constant over time. As technologies and teaching practices continually evolve, sport has remained an unbroken symbol of school culture, history and values. 2019 marks 120 years of sport at Redlands and to this day has been a vital component of a student’s overall development and education. Even in 1899, sport was still used as an opportunity to develop personal virtues and demonstrate school values of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness and courage.
Over the last few weeks, as we build back into the new school year, our Sports coaches and staff have been encouraged to focus on coaching the behaviours that reflect these school values. If our students can use sport as a vehicle to consistently demonstrate the behaviours which reflect these values of Redlands then we are providing some of the most valuable life lessons that any education can provide. It is these sporting experiences and lessons that will create lasting memories well beyond a student’s school years.

Australian Schools Championships
In the last week of school in Term 4, both the 1st Girls and 1st Boys Basketball teams travelled to Melbourne for the 2018 Australian Schools Championships.
The boys team had an exciting start to the week, winning the first game by two points in the final seconds of the match. It was a great week on court for the boys and they finished top of the table, losing just one game as they headed into the Semi Finals. The Semi Final was a tough fought game, but an early lead for the opposition made it hard to get back into the game. The boys ended up playing off for the bronze medal on the Friday. It was a close fought match and our boys were down for most of the game. A late surge saw Redlands take the lead with two minutes to go, they managed to hold off the other team and win the bronze medal with a final score of 45-40.
The girls team started off the week with a very tough game against Queensland school, John Paul College. The girls were very competitive in their next three games, however, based on the way the pools were divided, the girls didn’t get to play in the crossovers. It was a great level of competition that really pushed our girls to play a smarter, tougher brand of Basketball.
The group had the opportunity to attend the Australian Boomers vs Qatar World Qualifying game in Melbourne. It was a great opportunity to see some of Australia’s best players in action. Our girls team also had the opportunity of a meet and greet with Opals player, Cayla George, which was a great experience for them. The week was an extremely valuable experience for both teams both on and off the court.
ISA Basketball
Round 7 saw some great results across both the girls and boys Basketball programs. Our Junior Girls teams won with a clean sweep and had some very convincing wins. Our Open B team had a close loss against CCGS and both the Inter B and 1st Girls had tough games against CCGS and Barker respectively.
Our A Boys line had a tough round against Oakhill’s A teams, and our B Boys teams all had great results against the Oakhill teams in their division. Another great round for the C Boys teams, which saw Redlands win four of the five games in their line. A special mention to the 14D team who continues their undefeated streak this season. Best of luck to all teams this Saturday in Round 8.
Basketball Presentation Evening
The End of Season Basketball dinner will be held on Thursday 14 March at Norths Leagues Club. Please keep this date clear in your calendar, further details will be provided shortly. We are in need of photos for the End of Season Basketball Presentation. If you have any photos from the Basketball season, can you please send them through to kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au.
Netball
Netball trials for Yrs 7 – 9 have begun this week in order to have teams selected and registered before the NSNA registration date. With the Yr 9 trials finishing on Tuesday, the Yr 8 trials begin Thursday 7 February. The trial schedule is below (please note: if there is a clash with your current summer sport you need to still attend the summer sport as the priority):
Yr 8 – Thursday 7 February (Lang Gym 5.00 – 7.00pm) and Tuesday 12 February (Lang Gym 5.30 – 7.30pm)
Yr 7 – Thursday 14 February (Lang Gym (5.00 – 7.00pm) and Thursday 21 February (Lang Gym 5.00 – 7.00pm)
If you have not received the information regarding these trials please email Mr Cameron Ellis.
The trials for the 1st VII Netball will begin in Week 6, Tuesday 5 March (Lang Gym 5.30 – 7.30pm) and Thursday 7 March (Lang Gym 5.00 – 7.00pm). These trials are open to all players in Yrs 10 -12. If you are interested in trailing for the 1sts please email cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au with your preferred position #1 and preferred position #2.
Rowing
On Saturday 2 February the Rowing program attended the Lake Macquarie Rowing Club Regatta held at Berry Park on the Hunter River. Here was an opportunity for our students to put into practice their skills, fitness and boat speed gained during the recent January Rowing camps.
Our students had one of the most successful days for the program yet, winning 19 events outright with a further 28 second places and 26 third places to round out the podium. With the local council sponsoring the event and providing 2nd place medals, many of our students went home with multiple “bling” from the day.
A special thanks to our Friends of Rowing group who provided pizzas for the students after what has to be a record fast boat unloading effort once the busses returned to Mosman Rowing Club.
While this Regatta is a great season opener for the program, there will be far more challenging Regattas ahead. Next weekend will see the Rowing program attend the NSW State Championships, where the best from NSW, ACT, QLD and VIC will come to compete in events ranging from Under 16 through to Open aged athletes hoping to gain selection in the 2019 Australian Rowing team as they seek to qualify boats for the 2020 Olympic Games.
Most schools will limit their crews to a select handful of their fastest combinations, however at Redlands we are taking the opportunity to send our whole program with the Yr 8 and 9 students mostly racing in the Under 16 events on the Sunday. For our Yr 8 students, they will be competing against students from clubs and schools that are possibly 1-2 years older than themselves. This will bring its own challenges as some of our crews will likely not be able to match it with the faster paced and older boats just yet however, this will provide solid race experience against stiff opposition leading into the ACT Head of the Lake and NSW Heads of the River Regattas.
Our older students will find racing opportunities on both the Saturday and Sunday. The senior students will be racing in the School Boy and School Girl Single Scull on the Sunday, the results of this will then help determine our internal crew boat selection leading into the final few Regattas of the year.
Please keep the following dates marked in your diaries (info on all can be found on Redlands Pulse):
NSW State Champs – Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 February
ACT Head of the Lake – Saturday 2 March
NSW Girls Head of the River – Saturday 16 March
NSW Boys Head of the River – Sunday 17 March
Nationals – Monday 25 to Sunday 31 March
Presentation Dinner – Thursday 4 April
Swimming
Redlands Swimming Squad training will take place at North Sydney Olympic Pool on the following days:
Monday morning 6.00 – 7.30am (students to meet at North Sydney Olympic Pool, bus to return students to school by 8.00am) first session is Monday 4 February, last session is Monday 11 March
Friday afternoon 3.30 – 5.00pm (bus will take students from school and return approximately 5.15pm) first session is Friday 31 January, last session is Friday 8 February.
Saturday saw all of our Redlands Touch Football teams compete in the Sydney Gala Day, with all schools involved in the ISA competition travelling to a fairly wet and rainy Macquarie University. All of our teams played multiple matches across the day and the level of play was fantastic to see, especially considering that all of our students had only just returned from the holiday period and had not trained at all in the days leading up to the competition. Results across the day were strong for Redlands with our Junior Cs continuing their surge up the ladder with strong wins against Chevalier and St Spyridon with Maddison Hungerford playing brilliantly across both games. Elsewhere we had two internal games with our 1st VI playing our Senior Bs whilst our Junior As came against a spirited Junior Bs side. It was a great to see how, for most of these matches, the teams involved were closely matched, ultimately with the 1st VI and Junior As coming out on top. It was an amazing day, the feedback from visiting coaches and parents was fantastic to hear with all of our students playing their matches positively and supporting the other teams throughout the day. I would like to mention a few players specifically, having the chance to walk around the fields before and after my own matches, I must say there were a few standout performances. Emma Heylbut in the Junior Bs was excellent in her matches, being so new to the sport and showing such a strong development as a player goes to show how positive her approach to the game and trainings is. Emma Sutton, a new student to Redlands, did not miss a beat as she carved up through the day. A very strong player, I can look forward to seeing her play not only for this season but the next, brilliant start to her Redlands sporting career. Continuing the theme of exceptional Emma’s I must mention Emma Mahon who was the best on ground in two out of three of her matches with some wonderful runs and tireless work in defence.
All in all, a great weekend for Redlands Touch Football, with two away weekends to finish our season off we can look forward to seeing a number of our teams represent our school in the ISA Finals on 2 March.
Fitness Centre Update
Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently doing a summer Representative sport and there are sessions each morning across Monday, Wednesday and Friday with additional afternoon sessions across Monday and Wednesday.
There will also be more information sent out regarding the High Performance Program for some of our athletes across the representative sports as we begin to prepare for the winter sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is a more individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development.
Please speak to Mr Gooding directly if you would like to speak regarding individualised programs and/or the High Performance Program.
Welcome back to what is certain to be another exciting year for Redlands Sport in the Junior School. A term calendar of all things sport is available on Redlands Pulse as a one stop information point for all sporting dates during the term.
Our January Sports clinics were a great success with over 50 students attending our January Basketball camp. Keep an eye out for Football, Netball and more Basketball camps coming in the next holidays.
IPSHA Sports
Our Saturday morning sports begin on 9 February and we’ll be busy finalising/selecting teams this week and will email team lists/draws and post them on the Dunnet Hall noticeboards as soon as possible.
Basketball
Before school practices have begun. Teams will be selected after Wednesday training and posted on Thursday by recess outside Dunnet Hall. The match schedule is already available on Redlands Pulse, in hard copy at the Sports office and will be emailed to all basketballers with team lists
Players requiring Basketball uniforms should head to the Uniform Shop, who now look after the uniforms.
You’ll note from the draw that we have entered four additional Redlands teams: Redlands Blue, Green, Red and Gold. Our Redlands teams will be competing against each other in a round robin competition each Saturday. Our teams will be coached by our rep coaches, play competitive matches with match referees and be able to watch our graded teams play against other schools before or after their fixtures. The idea being that we prepare our newer players for match play without exposing them to competition from some of the larger stronger schools. We have the capacity to even up games, explain rules and give our rookie players a generally better experience. In Term 4 they’ll be ready for all oppositions.
Having had only one Wednesday training available for team selection, teams are not set in stone and our first round of matches will act as a second trial to finalise teams. It is expected that there will be some movement up and down in teams over coming weeks.
Keen Junior basketballers should try to get to Dunnet Hall at 10.30am this Saturday to support our Secondary School Boys Firsts take on St Pius. The majority of this Firsts team came through the Junior School Basketball program not so long ago. It’s great for our Juniors to see just how exciting and athletic Basketball gets beyond the Junior School.
Girls’ Football
Teams will be selected after Wednesday training and posted on Thursday at recess outside Dunnet Hall. The match schedule will be available on Redlands Pulse, in hard copy at the Sports office and will be emailed to all parents as soon as we receive it. Given the short nature of the Girls’ Football season, we will play in PE uniform wearing Redlands Football socks which are available from the Uniform Shop. Students should have shin-pads for all training and matches. Football studded boots are not essential.
Cricket
The team will be selected after Wednesday training and posted on Thursday at recess outside Dunnet Hall. The match schedule will be available on Redlands Pulse, in hard copy at the Sports office and will be emailed to all parents this coming Monday. In the nature of coloured uniforms in the shortened formats of the game, we will play in PE uniform. Hats are a must, given the heat of our recent summer.
Tennis

Music Tutor-Parent Communications
Private Music Tuition Program
The Music Department places importance on creating strong school/home partnerships to increase parental involvement in the learning of music. In engaging with certain approaches to communication, our goal is to establish an interconnection with parents in supporting student learning. Much like the Redlands Student Planner, our primary system of communication for school/home connections is through the weekly use of the Private Music Tuition Record Book (White Book). This resource is designed to record lesson material, provide ongoing practice routines and be the diary in which parents and tutors communicate regularly. Each week the Music tutor confirms the time of lesson in the record book making it an easy reference in checking the student’s lesson time.
The secondary method of communication is through Redlands staff email, where Music tutors will clearly outline teaching schedules and outline any changes or amendments that may occur from time to time. Correspondence through email is the expected form of communication and Music tutors are not expected to respond to text messages on their personal mobile number. Please understand that many of our Music tutors are employed at other schools and as such do not work at Redlands every day. Parents are reminded that response to an email may not be immediate so forward planning is recommended. Under no circumstances should students and teachers be communicating via personal mobile devices.
Importantly, we believe that effective communication is based on ongoing exchanges and our goal is to ensure that correspondence is informative and interactive as possible. Every communication exchange, regardless of format, should reflect a thoughtful, planned dialogue and should be viewed as an opportunity for teacher-parent partnerships that ultimately supports student learning.

The competition is open to students in Yrs 5-12. Competition audition forms are now available from the Secondary Music Office or Redlands Pulse.
Extra Subjects Music Tuition
The Private and Group Tuition commences next week in Week 2. Please note that Music specialists will be in direct contact with parents to issue the teaching timetable for the term.
The Extra Subjects Music Tuition program provides specialist lessons in private singing and instrumental tuition. This program is primarily to provide tuition during school hours, where students leave a curriculum for 30 minutes per week to attend their private Music lesson. Music tutors rotate the lesson times on a four-weekly cycle to ensure that students only miss 30 minutes of the same curriculum lesson two to three times each term. Only in special circumstances, and if possible within individual teaching timetables, will Music tutors be able to organise for lessons to be made during free periods, lunch, before or after school hours.
All enrolments for Extra Subjects Voice and Instrumental tuition must be submitted by Friday 15 February for lessons to commence in Term 1. Any forms received after this date will commence lessons in Term 2. Parents and guardians are advised that students who are requesting a change to their current Extra Subject Music tuition will need to submit a Notification of Change Form four weeks prior to the end of Semester 1. Please note that once term has commenced, lessons will NOT be able to be terminated. The Notification of Change form can be downloaded from Redlands Pulse and emailed to Music Administrators.
The Extra Subjects Group Music tuition program includes Musicianship, Sound Engineering, Rock Bands and Composition. These groups meet throughout the week before and after school and provide students with opportunities in building music theory skills, recording, contemporary performance and song writing. These lessons occur before or after school and are led by our experienced Music tutors and specialists in these areas of learning. Days and times of these classes can be found on Redlands Pulse under Music.

Instrument Storage
Students must store their instruments at the back of their classroom (for large instruments) or in their school bag or locker (for small instruments) throughout the day. Instruments should not be left at school overnight as they are needed at home for regular practice sessions. School hired instruments must be included on personal home and contents insurance as Redlands cannot be held responsible for instruments which are lost, stolen or damaged. As all instruments are very fragile, we ask for your assistance in ensuring that students do not let other children play with their instrument, instruments are kept in a safe place and out of extreme temperatures (ie. hot car) and are not left out of their case when not in use.
