Service

Tanzania 2018

The team of 23 students and 3 teachers had a very successful trip to Tanzania. They completed a Service project at Esilalei village near Lake Manyara. This is a Masai region and students were guests of a Masai village with a small, two classroom infants school. Students worked alongside Masai tradesmen and members of the community to refurbish one of the school buildings; putting on a new roof and guttering and repainting inside and out. We were also about to finish off a more recently constructed building with painting inside and out. Because the team had done such a good job with fundraising, they had significant funds leftover and decided to also install an additional water tank for the school and community.

In addition to the project work, this Service learning trip also involved a very challenging three day trek to the summit of Mt Meru, animal spotting on safari as well as an exciting visit to the island of Zanzibar for beaches and exploring in Stone Town. There were so many memorable and moving experiences throughout the trip along with the development of leadership and independent travel skills that will stay with students well into the future.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations

We are still seeking donations for the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and support services to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Services can include nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical assistance. Redlands teachers and students from Yr 11 attend the Hostel every Monday morning to assist with breakfast.

At this time of the year, we collect donations to help Matthew Talbot through the Winter months. We are looking for new items of underwear such and socks and thermals along with toiletries like shampoo, hand sanitiser, deodorant and moisturiser. Each Tutor Group has been issued with a collection box and are challenged to fill it to the brim. Students can bring in donations this week and next week.

Jeans for Genes Day

Redlands will be participating in Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 3 August. Students are encouraged to come in mufti clothes including denim and will be expected to make a gold coin donation during Tutor time on the day.
