Issue 21 2018 - 26 Jul 2018

From the Principal

A warm welcome to all families to Term 3 following the mid-year vacation and a special welcome to the new families who are joining our community from the UK, USA, Hong Kong and Singapore and from other local schools.

The vacation period saw the running of the 21st Redlands Cup at Thredbo and I sincerely thank all those staff and parents, led by Snowsports Coordinator Mr Bruce Campbell, for all their hard work in ensuring the very successful organisation of this event, which attracted around 500 competitors from NSW schools, and even a few from interstate.

Congratulations to our Snowsports team of 135 skiers and snowboarders for their excellent results at both the Redlands Cup and NSW Interschools.  At the Redlands Cup our team was awarded 22 podium places – 6 individual and 16 team – achieving 3 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze medals. I especially congratulate the following Gold medal winners:

Billy Thomas – Div 3 Boys Alpine
Div 1 Boys Snowboard B team
Div 3 Boys Snowboard team

There was further success at the Sydney Interschools at Perisher, held immediately after the Redlands Cup. Our Secondary team took out the trifecta, placing 1st in Secondary Coed Overall, Secondary Coed Skiing and Secondary Coed Snowboard, and our Primary team placed 1st in Primary Coed Overall and Primary Coed Skiing. In total, our team achieved 42 podium places – 17 individual and 25 team – with 10 Gold, 19 Silver and 13 Bronze medals. Special congratulations to the individual Gold medal winners:

Daisy Thomas – Div 4 Girls Skier X and Moguls
George Murphy – Div 2 Boys Moguls
Kate Stanbridge – Div 2 Girls Snowboard X

This year our skiers have excelled in the Moguls team events, with Div 1 Girls, Div 3 Boys, Div 4 Girls and Div 4 Boys all taking out Gold, along with the Div 2 Girls Snowboard and Snowboard Cross teams. A total of 44 teams have qualified to compete in the NSW Interschools at Thredbo in August.

23 Year 11 students undertook a Service Learning trip to Tanzania during the vacation period and had a wonderful experience. During their trip they refurbished a Masai community school and installed a new water tank, reached the summit of Mt Meru after a three-day trek and experienced amazing African wildlife. I sincerely thank the three teachers who accompanied the students in this excellent Service Learning opportunity, Ms Coleman, Ms Shorter and Mr Ellis.

This term commenced last Monday for all our staff with a day of Professional Learning. A key focus of the day was the presentation of the next evolution of our Redlands Learning Platform which has now been further refined to include our focus on creating a culture of thinking. I shall say more about this in next week’s Note Day.

Dr Peter Lennox

Foundation

Welcome back to Term 3. We trust you all enjoyed a restful and relaxing winter holiday with your families.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

The purpose of the Legacy Gift is to make a long lasting legacy to our School for many years to come. The Class of 2018 Legacy Gift initiative is a wonderful way which the Yr 12 cohort will refer to and reflect upon in the future when they return to Redlands as Alumni for reunions and community events.

Thank you to Elizabeth Lee (Yr 12 student), Mr Castelli, Mr Atkins and the Legacy Gift Committee for organising and running a very successful Sausage Sizzle at the end of Term 2 and Beard Growing competition over the Winter holiday. Both initiatives generated great profits towards this gift.  We look forward to announcing the 2018 Yr 12 Legacy Gift to the School later this term.

Head of Secondary School

Welcome Back to Term 3

It was great to see the students return to school on Tuesday, refreshed after their mid-year break. As part of their fundraising efforts towards their Legacy Gift, Yr 12 representatives from each Tutor Group were permitted to either grow beards over the holidays or return with “big hair” for the first day back at school and receive donations for their efforts. Yr 12 Tutors, Mr Skinner and Mr Gray, as well as yours truly, joined them in hirsute solidarity for the day. Of course, all hair styles were back to normal and all faces clean shaven by Wednesday – including mine!

During the assembly, I spoke to the students about my personal reactions to the Thailand cave rescue over the holidays which I have shared below.

“Now, like many of you, over the first part of the holidays, I was following the FIFA World Cup (sorry once again to the England supporters). But during that time, I was even more enthralled by the story of another Football team: the Wild Boars Football team of 12 boys aged 11-16 and their 25 year old coach who were trapped deep underground in a flooded cave in Thailand for over two weeks. Miraculously, after nine days the team was found and a week later all 12 boys and their coach were pulled out of the cave alive after a daring and heroic rescue.

Since then, I have been trying to figure out why I, and so many others around the world, were so moved and captured by this story, and I have even felt guilty that my emotional energy was so tied up in the fate of these 12 boys and their coach, and not in the same way to the suffering of civilians in Syria, Afghanistan and Palestine during this same time.

Maybe it was the against all odds nature and the drama of the story as rescuers fought against some of the most challenging and harrowing conditions and the looming monsoon rains, the dangers illustrated by the tragic death of one of the Thai Navy seals who drowned during the rescue mission.

Maybe it was the sheer power of the human spirit displayed by the 12 boys and their coach who were cut off from the world for nine days, starving on a muddy ledge in the dark depths of the cave, surviving on the water dripping off the limetone walls, their collective spirit and calming meditation led by their coach.

Maybe it was my attempts to empathise not only with the boys who were trapped in such a terrifying predicament, but also their coach, who was feeling responsible for allowing them to enter the cave in the first place and also the parents, imagining if it was my child trapped under the ground for two weeks, going through their full spectrum of emotions.

Or maybe it was the selfless heroism of the rescuers. 10,000 people from all around the world descended upon the area, including 2,000 soldiers, 200 divers and throngs of local Thai volunteers. When we are usually relentlessly confronted with narcissistic world leaders threatening increasing isolation and hostility, it was so heart-warming to see the world selflessly come together as one on a mission to save these 12 boys and their coach.

Personally, I am not exactly sure what it was that captured me so much about this story. Maybe it was all of these aspects combined. But what I do know is that in a world that at times can seem bleak, this story gave me hope. Hope in the power of the human spirit. Hope in the goodness of others. Hope in the face of adversity. My wish for all of you is that over the next few weeks, months and even years, if things seem tough and bleak, that this story might provide some light in the darkness.

As Andy Dufresne, in one of my favourite movies, Shawshank Redemption, says, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.”

Cyber Safety Presentation

On Monday 30 July, cyber safety expert Brett Lee will be at Redlands to deliver presentations throughout the day to students in Yrs 7-10. There will also be a parent seminar in Redlands Hall from 6.00-7.30pm. During the parent seminar, Brett will discuss the topics of digital compliance and internet safety. Brett is an engaging speaker, providing information in a way that will bring to life possible online dangers, as well as the responsibilities, which are part of your child’s digital world. Strategies regarding protection and prevention will empower parents to help reduce online risks within the home with very simple adjustments. Areas that will be covered will include: social networking, the law online, identity protection and cyberbullying, as well as the key role parents play in keeping young people safe online. This parent seminar would be appropriate for all Secondary School parents and we strongly encourage you to attend.

Staffing Update

Unfortunately, Yr 8 Year Advisor and Latin teacher, Mr Chris Ransom, has resigned due to health reasons. We thank Mr Ransom for his contribution to Redlands as both a valued Latin teacher and Year Advisor, and wish him the best for the future. Mr Argyris Giantsis will continue in his role as Secondary School Latin teacher while Ms Vale and Ms Mountain will continue in their roles as Yr 8 Year Advisor and Assistant Year Advisor, respectively.

Chaplain

The Christian Studies Department welcomes Mr James Clanfield as the new Subject Coordinator of Christian Studies. Mr Clanfield comes with diverse experience in Christian Studies having taught in different schools in both the Independent and Catholic sectors and experience as the Head of Creative and Performing Arts with expertise in Music.  With qualifications in Education, a Masters of Education (IB) and Theology, he makes a wonderful addition to the Christian Studies Department.

Redlands prides itself on the collegial approach to learning and this is reflected in the Christian Studies Department P-12. With the addition of Mr Clanfield, Ms Fiona McKenzie and Ms Bronwyn Lihou will be able to have greater emphasis on their roles as Chaplains. We will continue to teach, however the richness that comes from a broader team will be a real benefit to the school community. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with Mr Clanfield as the academic Subject Coordinator.

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition and this is reflected in our priority of Chapel and Christian Studies as an integral part of our academic program and our School values. The Chaplains have a leadership role in the school culture as we both explain and commend Christ. We provide opportunities for Spiritual reflection at both Chapel and at the lunchtime groups of Thank God It’s Friday (TGIF) on the Junior Campus and Cru on the Senior Campus. This is particularly important for those students and families of different faith systems, in their understanding of our School’s traditions.

The Chaplains seek to provide a safe and open learning environment where students can consider the Christian message and gain a deep understanding of the key tenets and values of the Christian faith. We support and minister to students, staff and families in whatever way is helpful: a friendly encourager, listening ear, prayer support, spiritual advisor or caring support. Both Fiona and I are available as part of the Wellbeing team to support the Redlands community in the day to day life of Redlands and in times of particular need.

Parents are always welcome to contact the Chaplains.

A Night to Delight

Service

Tanzania 2018

The team of 23 students and 3 teachers had a very successful trip to Tanzania. They completed a Service project at Esilalei village near Lake Manyara. This is a Masai region and students were guests of a Masai village with a small, two classroom infants school. Students worked alongside Masai tradesmen and members of the community to refurbish one of the school buildings; putting on a new roof and guttering and repainting inside and out. We were also about to finish off a more recently constructed building with painting inside and out. Because the team had done such a good job with fundraising, they had significant funds leftover and decided to also install an additional water tank for the school and community.

In addition to the project work, this Service learning trip also involved a very challenging three day trek to the summit of Mt Meru, animal spotting on safari as well as an exciting visit to the island of Zanzibar for beaches and exploring in Stone Town. There were so many memorable and moving experiences throughout the trip along with the development of leadership and independent travel skills that will stay with students well into the future.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations

We are still seeking donations for the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and support services to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Services can include nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical assistance. Redlands teachers and students from Yr 11 attend the Hostel every Monday morning to assist with breakfast.

At this time of the year, we collect donations to help Matthew Talbot through the Winter months. We are looking for new items of underwear such and socks and thermals along with toiletries like shampoo, hand sanitiser, deodorant and moisturiser. Each Tutor Group has been issued with a collection box and are challenged to fill it to the brim. Students can bring in donations this week and next week.

Jeans for Genes Day

Redlands will be participating in Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 3 August. Students are encouraged to come in mufti clothes including denim and will be expected to make a gold coin donation during Tutor time on the day.

Year 12

The next fortnight consists of the trial examinations which is followed by two weeks of feedback and reflection. We then begin the home stretch with various celebratory activities integrated into the school day including the House Breakfasts, Breakfast Cruise, Final Chapel Service and Final School Assembly.

Key Dates

Monday 6 August to Friday 17 August – HSC and IB Trials
Monday 25 September – Final Chapel Service
Tuesday 25 September – Yr 12 Breakfast Cruise and Balmoral Beach Day
Wednesday 26 September – Yr 12 Valedictory Dinner and HSC students’ last day

Legacy Gift

Yr 12 continued their fundraising work for their Legacy Gift throughout the holidays. Some brave students volunteered to participate in the ‘best beard and hair competition.’ With much heated debate preceding the unveiling of three weeks of holiday growth, our students and some staff managed to present themselves at a whole school assembly and raise a further $400. The standout and overall winner according to student voting was Claudia Wilson or ‘palm tree girl’ who crafted her hair into the shape and colour of a lonely island. Thank you to Olivia Allen, Ally Ates, Marina Cheah, John Economides, Leopold McAllister, Lachlan Miller, Alex Murray, Gabriel O’Sullivan, Louise Sarich-Prince, Oscar Talbert and Claudia Wilson. A special thank you also to our Yr 12 Tutors, Mr Gray and Mr Skinner, as well as our Head of Secondary School, Mr Corcoran, who also grew impressive beards to help the students with their fundraising efforts.

Do You Even Lift?

Last year in our Pastoral Care Program we discussed the idea of lifting each other’s spirits in order to help others whilst making ourselves stronger. It set the tone for a cohesive and tight knit Year Group that has grown from strength to strength. Over the break, Sean Russell took this concept to a whole new level and discovered his gift for literally lifting the weight of several people. After working hard to get fit for the Rugby season, he was approached by Powerlifting Australia. They suggested he compete in a local competition in Brookvale last week where he ended up winning his weight category qualifying for nationals in Victoria in a couple of weeks. Well done Sean!

Year 7

Welcome to Term 3

In Pastoral Care, students have started meeting one-on-one with their Tutors, reflecting on progress and setting goals for the coming term. I managed to see most students on Tuesday and enjoyed hearing wonderful stories of staycations and vacations; it was an absolute joy to see everyone’s smiling faces.

This term, we warmly welcome Mr David Newling to the Yr 7 Pastoral team. This week, Mr Newling has enjoyed getting to know Cowper Blue. We wish Ms Privett warm wishes as she steps into the role of Acting Yr 9 Assistant Advisor for Term 3. Sadly, we farewell Ms Kate Carolan (Dumolo Blue) at the end of Week 2. Ms Carolan is moving to Dubai shortly. We sincerely thank her for supporting her Tutor group so well as they commenced Yr 7 and wish her all the best on her new journey. New Tutors will be in contact to introduce themselves in the coming weeks.

Cyber Safety Presentations

On Monday 30 July Cyber safety expert Brett Lee is coming to Redlands to deliver a presentation to students and parents.

The Secondary School presentations challenge student’s mindsets and assumptions about the realities of the online world. This is achieved through real and sometimes confronting presentations with life lessons that can’t be denied. In all of this, presentations aim to empower students with the knowledge they need to act responsibly in the online environment.

There will also be a seminar for parents in Redlands Hall from 6pm until 7.30pm. With students readily diving into the online world, I strongly encourage parents attend this event. Head of Junior School

Welcome Back

There was a wonderful buzz of energy as we welcomed the students back for Term 3 and start another eventful and exciting semester of learning opportunities and experiences. I hope that students and families have been able to take some time to rest and enjoy the time together away from school and that the children are refreshed and energised ahead of the second half of the year. In particular, I extend a warm welcome to our three new Junior School students and their families and wish you much happiness and enjoyment at Redlands.

In our first assembly, the students and I spent time revisiting our School Values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Fairness, Compassion and Moral Courage and the importance of ‘living’ these values as part of our everyday lives. In particular, we focused on the value of Respect and the notion that we earn respect by showing respect and what respect might look like in the context of our School. Connected to this, I shared our expectations of the importance of students focusing on enjoyment and challenges in learning but also the expectation that they do not compromise their own learning or that of others in class. Many students looked resplendent in their full school uniform on the first day of term and this is another area of expectation that we reminded students of for the term ahead.

Term 3 Staffing News
  • We welcome Mr James Clanfield who will teach Christian Studies on Fridays and also takes on the Subject Coordinator role for Christian Studies, teaching in the Secondary School on the other four days.
  • We welcome back Mrs Catriona Ling and Mr Bill Baugh to our Learning Plus Mathematics team after their long service leave breaks last term.
  • I am delighted to confirm that Ms Shelly Acland will work three days a week as an extra Junior School Counsellor, alongside Mrs Kourakis’ three days in the same role. Having just completed the last year working in the Prep School, Ms Acland is very familiar with both Redlands and many in our community and will provide additional pastoral care and support for students, teachers and families, as needed.
  • With our eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow, returning from maternity leave for three days a week, I am very pleased to confirm that Mrs Fiona Rugg will take up an eLearning teacher role for two days a week to support student learning alongside Mrs Winrow and class teachers in P-6.
  • From Week 3, we will welcome back Mrs Hilary Luck to her Music leadership and teacher role, which will continue to be ably covered by Mr Castelli and Ms Kent.
Snowsports Success

It has been another busy and successful start to the snow season and, over the break, many Junior School students and families were involved in Family Week at our High Country Campus, the Redlands Cup, the Sydney Interschools Championships, or a combination of all three!

In talking to many students and teachers present in the last couple of days, they had a wonderful time at the snow with friends and family and we were thrilled to hear of the Junior School students’ success (supported by a large number of Prep students) at the Sydney Interschools Championships, which we were able to acknowledge in our first assembly back.

Our primary team were crowned with the following accolades:

  • 1st Primary Coed Overall Champions
  • 1st Primary Coed Skiing Champions

Many students won individual medals and we have a large number of students who will now progress to the State Championships.

Thank you and well done to all of our students, teachers and parent helpers who combined together to make this another wonderful start to the snow season for Redlands.

Student Safety Reminder

At the end of last term, we had an unfortunate incident where a student fell and broke her wrist whilst running to catch a bus after school. As sad as this was, it also uncovered another issue; a number of Junior School students going to McDonald’s or the Shell service station to buy food and drink after school, which they are not permitted to do, before racing to catch buses home.

In addition, if your child is catching a bus from Military Road, please can you also reinforce the need to use the pedestrian crossing on Murdoch Street and the Military Road footbridge if catching a bus northbound from outside the Secondary School.

How to Get a Message to Your Child?

If you need to get an important message to your child during the day, please contact the School Office on 9953 6022 or via email at the Junior Campus office and cc the class teacher who is not guaranteed to check emails through the day.

Please also be reminded that parents should not be contacting their child via mobile technology during the day, a message that has also been reiterated to students. Whilst some students have mobile phones as they travel independently to and from school, these are not accessible to students during the school day. Similarly, if they have an iPad as a learning resource, it is solely for this purpose and not as a tool for communication.

Three Way Conferences

Parents will receive an email of information from our Junior Campus Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins, about the online booking process for this term’s upcoming three-way conferences, where reflections on Semester 1 will be shared and goals set for Semester 2.

I hope that you and your child find the experience as beneficial as their class teacher and that the sharing of these personal goals will serve as important dialogue between home and school through the second half of the year.

Chess Team Success

Over the break, we were thrilled to hear that our Junior School Chess team had won their division in the Metropolitan North Region division in the NSW Junior Chess League. The team had been competing against local public and independent schools through the first semester and we were pleased to acknowledge and congratulate Will Andrew, Mischa Barac, Isaac Brooks, Tom Jackson and Conor Petersen in our assembly this week.

Junior Music Festival

All students in the Junior School will be performing at the 2018 Junior Music Festival to be held next Thursday 2 August in Robert Dunnet Hall at 4.30pm. As you will be aware, the students have been learning repertoire and are very excited to be performing for families at this event.

On the day, students will remain at school for afternoon tea and the concert, which commences at 4.30pm, is expected to finish at approximately 6pm. As such, all students will need to bring afternoon tea and a water bottle.

Students will be dismissed from their classrooms at the conclusion of the concert and it is advised that only one parent goes to collect their child to reduce the volume of pedestrian traffic in corridors.

Please note that before school, after school and lunchtime Junior Cocurricular Music ensemble rehearsals will be cancelled next week.

Updated Junior School Calendar

An updated Semester 2 Junior School Calendar has been uploaded to Redlands Pulse for your reference here.

Jeans for Genes Day – Friday 3 August

Next Friday sees a Redlands ‘Mufti Day’ in support of the Jeans for Genes Day. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and encouraged to wear denim. SRC leaders in each class will collect and count monies donated and this will also combine with the collection in the Prep and Secondary sections of our School.

Semester 2 Cocurricular Clubs

These commence next Tuesday 31 July and students will be notified of the Clubs that they signed up for at the start of the year. We have some spaces left in Fitness and Boxercise, Mindfulness and Art, Claymation, Plushy Making and Poetry Around the Place. Interested students should contact the Junior School Office and preference will be given to students who did not take part in the Semester 1 offerings.

Jump Rope for Heart

The Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart has officially launched at Redlands. After raising $66,000 in 2016, we are aiming for a fundraising target of $70,000. Throughout the term there will be various fundraising incentives to motivate students to raise money for this very worthy cause. The students are very enthusiastic and are already trying out new skipping tricks around the school yard. The first fundraising incentive will be a prize for all classes in the Year Group who are the first to have everybody signed up online.

Please ensure you sign you child up for Jump Rope for Heart via this link.

Head of Early Childhood

Welcome Back to Term 3

I hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing holiday and were able to spend some quality time with friends and family. This lovely, long, three week break gives teachers and students the ability to recharge their batteries and prepare for another busy term. I enjoyed watching students, staff and parents happily reunite on Tuesday in the Piazza. We would like to extend a welcome to the new students and their families who are joining the Redlands community in Early Childhood. We are thrilled to welcome students from a range of countries around the world, including other schools in Sydney, NSW and Australia. I look forward to continuing to lead Early Childhood this Semester, working collaboratively with students, staff and families and seeing everyone at the many exciting events we have planned for this term, including the much anticipated Spring Fair.

During the first Prep assembly this week, I introduced the upcoming Book Week theme Finding Your Treasure. The students brainstormed some ideas of what treasure might look like in their lives. The children decided jewels, precious stones and coins were treasure, but some deeper thinkers shared that their families, friends and teachers were all treasures to them. Of course, we also hope that some of the treasure children find comes from books. I encourage you to discuss a book you ‘treasured’ as a child and a book you know your child ‘treasures’. Have a philosophical conversation about what they treasure most. Is it a person? For you, it may be freedom, the environment, your family, your network of friends, your health, your creativity and imagination, the ability to read, being able to speak more than one language…the list goes on. Book Week will be held in Week 5 this term and Mrs Roberts has organised some exciting activities both in class and in Library lessons, including a treasure themed dress-up day on Thursday 23 August. Further details will be sent in upcoming Note Day issues.

Staffing News

This term we are delighted to welcome Mrs Jo Wise, Prep School Counsellor, returning from 18 months on Maternity Leave. Mrs Shelly Acland, who replaced Mrs Wise, will remain on the Junior Campus to assist with the student/parent handover and work with the Junior School team. Ms Vanessa Finlayson returns as Yr 1 Coordinator and One Silver teacher, after a well-deserved term of Long Service Leave. Joining the eLearning team this Semester is Mrs Fiona Rugg, who will be taking up a teaching role two days a week to support student learning alongside Mrs Shireen Winrow and class teachers in P-6.

Trading Cards – Yrs 1 and 2

Previously, students have been given the responsibility of bringing in trading cards to enjoy with their friends during Recess and Lunch. To allow students to play, develop friendships and settle into their new classes before they begin negotiating skills with trading cards, it was decided that this activity would begin in Semester 2. Students in Yrs 1 and 2 only can bring in their cards beginning on Monday, Week 2. If you would like your child to bring in trading cards, please complete the note found on the School’s portal and once signed, give to Mrs Hunt or Mrs Rosling at Prep Reception. I encourage you to read this note together with your child, especially the Code of Conduct section. There is a chance that cards are lost or damaged, therefore, if the card is too valuable, I strongly suggest you don’t bring it to school. If a student has reoccurring issues with the trading of cards, the privilege of trading will be withdrawn. I hope that allowing students to trade cards, will result in the development of cooperation, turn taking, negotiating and discussion skills that can be promoted through this activity.

Who Do I Contact?

As we begin a new semester, it seems timely to remind families of who to contact when questions arise.

Snowsports

Once again, the Early Childhood section of the School had a large proportion of students who participated in the 2018 Redlands Cup at Thredbo these holidays.

The goal in their 25th year is $25 million, enough to create a new centre of collaboration, bringing world-leading scientists and doctors together to help Australian children with genetic disease. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation to wear jeans and mufti on this day. A reminder that sneakers are to be worn.

Yr 1

Over the holidays we had some fantastic results in the Snowsports team who competed in the Redlands Cup and NSW Interschools which took place over the final week of the holidays. A full report and list of results can be found in the Snowsports section of Note Day. I would like to congratulate all members of the Snowsports team on their excellent results as well as thank the staff and parents who assisted in running the Redlands Cup and race week.

With three rounds left of ISA Winter Sport until the semis and finals, all students must approach every training and game with a high level of intensity and engagement. Our coaching staff are working hard on establishing clear plans to enable as many teams as possible to have the opportunity to compete in the finals series of their sports. We have several teams in Netball, Hockey, Football, Rugby and Tennis all in strong positions on the ladder across multiple divisions. I wish all students the best of luck.

If any parent of student wishes to review the ladder for any ISA Sport they can do so by going on the ISA website
