Macquarie University Playing Fields
At Redlands we are very fortunate to have access to a large sporting complex at Macquarie University for several of our Sports programs to utilise as a training and playing facility. Sporting fields remain at a premium within Sydney for all sporting codes and we are fortunate to retain a long term relationship with the University for this space. Redlands has used the facility at Macquarie University since the 1990s for its Sports programs and, as part of our ongoing relationship, I would like to remind our community of a few regulations as part of the use of the facility.
- Spectators are asked to remain behind all set fencing, ropes or markings listed on all of the fields.
- We encourage supportive spectators at all games but for safety reasons we ask that this support is delivered behind the set fencing and boundaries.
- The last thing we want is for our sport to reflect scenes from a mountain stage of the Tour de France
- Dogs are not allowed on site.
- Whilst we all love our furry friends may I kindly request that they remain resting at home as dogs are not allowed on site at the Macquarie University Sporting Fields.
We thank you for your cooperation of these requirements and look forward to your continued support of Redlands Sport at Macquarie Sporting Fields.
Redlands@home Charity Round – 15 June Macquarie University Sporting Fields
Parents and carers will have received information regarding our upcoming Redlands@home charity round on 15 June. In 2019 we are delighted to be supporting the Breast Cancer Network of Australia by holding a Pink Sock day and look forward to our communities continued support of this worthy charity. The day will involve a BBQ, cake stall, entertainment, 28 sports teams competing and a range of Redlands supporter’s tents to enjoy the day.
Athletics
Sprints training will continue on Friday afternoon at Balmoral Oval with Mosman Athletics Club. All those interested should speak with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department. It will run from 3.30pm (bus departing Redlands) until 5.30pm (bus returning to Redlands).
Cross Country
Cross Country training this week will be held on Friday morning from 6.30am at Primrose Park. Students will meet Mr Walker at Primrose then return to school at 8.00am.
Football
Round 3 of Redlands Football was an exceptional weekend for our Girls Football program. Winning all four games, all teams showed great improvement from the previous round. Our 1sts Girls and Inter A Girls both travelled to the Blue Mountains, with a 6-0 and 2-0 win respectively. Our 2nds Girls played against St Spyridon and were much improved on the previous week with a 1-0 win. Well done to our Junior A Girls who had a great 3-0 win over SPGS. Their effort on the field and encouragement for their teammates was fantastic to see.
Our Boys Football teams played away against St Patrick’s. It proved to be a challenging day, however, there were many positives to be taken, and it has allowed players and coaches to recognise areas for improvement in the upcoming weeks.
Best of luck to the following students who will be representing ISA in the CIS Football tournament next week: Kate Stanbridge, Sydney Stuckmann, Scarlet Thomas, Antionio Bonandi Penna Coelho, Simon Dupond and Tom Huizenga.

Hockey
Last weekend saw all three of our sides play the first of their home games at Macquarie University. With the sun out, it was great to see so many supporters on the sidelines, with some parents even looking like they were ready to start their own picnic!
After another hard-fought game against CCGS, our Girls 1sts came away with a 5-0 loss. Whilst they remained competitive for the majority of the game, we unfortunately could not convert our opportunities. However, the improvement in the teams tactical play and strength on the ball has been awesome to see.
The 2nds played a friendly game against an Oxley team from the division below. The game was likely to to be one sided which was the case leading into half time with our girls leading by 2-0. During the second half our girls made some adjustments to even the sides up by dropping off a number of players and even having a few of the Redlands and Oxley girls swap sides. Both teams played in the spirit of the event and walked away with a positive result in terms of skill development.
The 3rds had their toughest competition yet at Macquarie against Central Coast Grammar School. It was a great effort by both teams, ending in a draw 1-1. The girls played well as a team and should be very pleased with the result.
Next weekend will see the girls play away again, with the 1sts and 2nds teams heading to Chevalier College while the 3rds will head to BMGS. All game times can be found on Redlands Pulse. A brief reminder to all parents to please complete the permission required for students to travel to these away games on the bus.
Netball
Our team in focus this week is the Inter A team. Coming off the back of two narrow defeats against Barker and Chevalier, they were looking to build against St Andrew’s. The girls have been working hard on their control with a key focus on making the game run at the pace they dictate. Some great inter play of passing enabled the girls to create space in the shooting circle which was excellent to see. Some strong defense in the 2nd quarter enabled the girls to take a controlling lead and they never looked back!
Our NSNA teams continue to impress with a number of teams looking to cement their spot in the top four before the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Coaches are working hard on implementing tough and rewarding sessions to help the netballers improve across the season. We are always on the lookout for photos of teams and actions shots from the game so please get snapping and send them through to the Sports Department!
Friends of Netball: the next meeting will be held on Monday 3 June in L1.3. We are currently seeking expressions of interest to fill the position of Friends of Netball President. If you are interested in joining the Friends of Netball, please contact cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au.
Rugby
Last weekend our Under 15s came up against a dominant and undefeated Chevalier side. In the leadup to the match the team wanted to contest from the first whistle to the last. The Redlands team took it to the Chevalier side, bruising the opposition in defence and making brilliant carries in attack. The game was in the balance at half time, tied 10-10, with our Redlands team knowing the hard task coming in the second half. They knew how important it was to start strong and look to take the game away from the opposition. Chevalier came out of the half as hard as possible, running right into our defence, with all of the pressure eventually leading to a try, unconverted, and the score was then 15-10 to Chevalier. What happened next showed the talent and drive within our Redlands side. They came right back, time winding down on the clock, Redlands were getting close to the equaliser. After more than five minutes attacking the line, Redlands scored out wide. No more time on the clock and with the chance for a kick to win the match but unfortunately the kick sailed just wide and the game finished at a nail biting 15-15 draw.
What is most impressive from this game is the development of this Under 15s team, reversing such a large loss in just one season. Cannot wait to see more of these type of matches throughout the rest of the season.
Tennis
Last Saturday saw Redlands 3rds and 5ths played St Andrews on artificial clay courts, which provided a new and interesting surface to play on. The unfamiliar surface did not impact either team’s ability to dominate their singles and doubles matches, with both teams walking away with convincing wins. Redlands 6ths played Barker. They also continued their winning streak, making Saturday’s win the third in a row. An excellent achievement for our youngest team. Redlands 1sts also played Barker. They powered through each set and walked away with an 8-0 win. Redlands 2nds and 4ths played against St Andrew’s. Both teams played some excellent tennis, fighting for crucial points and working together to be successful in their doubles matches. A fantastic round for Redlands Tennis, keep playing each point like it’s your last.
It has great to see all the NSTA Tennis students making the most of their training throughout the week to improve their match playing skills. The atmosphere students are creating at Tennis each week is fantastic to see as it fosters an environment where all students can play without inhibition. If there is something you would like to work on at training, remember to ask the coaches each week. Just a reminder, if you are sick or injured, you are required to contact me directly via email (epeirce@redlands.nsw.edu.au) prior to training or Saturday’s matches.
