Head of Secondary Sport
This weekend is the first weekend of ISA winter sport. We will have over 650 students competing in over 65 teams across 6 different sports. A lot goes into the preparation of a Sports season to ensure all of our students can have the best learning experience possible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful work that all of our Sports staff at Redlands do to get our programs underway and ready for the students: Ms Kate Seebohm, Mr Jack Gooding, Mr Cameron Ellis, Mr James Petering, Ms Eliza Peirce, Mr Gerry Gomez and Ms Annie Stalley. We are very lucky to have dedicated and passionate staff who are backed up by excellent coaches within all sports.
I look forward to seeing our students compete on the weekend and I wish them all the best for the season ahead.
Notice of Macquarie University Sports Field Parking Changes
In October last year, Macquarie University moved to a digital parking platform across the campus and at the same time, introduced paid parking for all Sport and Aquatic Centre users. As part of this change, paid parking will also be applied to the Sport Fields as the last stage in this strategy.
As of 1 May, all parking at the sport fields will attract a fee of $1.50 per hour.
Athletics
This Friday we start our sprints training down at Balmoral Oval with Mosman Athletics Club. All those interested should speak with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department. It will run from 3.30pm (bus departing Redlands) until 5.30pm (bus returning to Redlands).
Cross Country
Cross Country training starts this Friday, with information found on Redlands Pulse – Cross Country. We are looking forward to a great upcoming season. The bus will depart the Adams Centre at 3.30pm and return approximately 5.30pm (training will finish around 5.00pm).
Fitness Centre
Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Please note that from next week the Fitness Centre will be open from 6.15am with the session starting immediately at 6.30am.
I would recommend that all students looking ahead to their Winter Representative Sport use these sessions as a way to prepare physically for their 2019 seasons. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.
There will also be more information sent out regarding High Performance Program for some of our athletes across the Representative Sports at Redlands as we begin to prepare for the Winter Sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is a more individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development. Please speak to Mr Gooding directly or email regarding individualised programs and or the High Performance Program.
Football
Over the Term 1 school holidays we had 22 of our boys and girls Football players travel to Berry for the annual Berry Winter Sports Camp. Once again, the Camp was a great success. The players spent four days fine tuning their Football skills and working on strategy in preparation for the upcoming season. It was a great experience for our players to develop team chemistry both on and off the field and we hope to see the hard work pay off in the first round of the season this weekend. A big thank you to all players who took time out of their holidays to attend the Camp, we hope you enjoyed the experience and will see many of you back again next year.
Best of luck to all teams this Saturday 4 May in Round 1. Players are reminded to arrive 45 minutes prior to the start time for their game in order to allow for sufficient time to warm up. Please check the Redlands Rhino (available on Redlands Pulse) for any changes to the weekly fixture.
Netball
NSNA is looking ahead to Round 3 this weekend, with a number of teams looking to bounce back after some tough loses last term.
ISA Netball starts this weekend with Redlands Rhino having all fixtures, best of luck to all netballers this weekend!
Rowing
During the holidays, both Maddi Howard (Yr 11) and Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9) were selected to represent NSW in the Pathways Rowing program. Maddi was part of the NSW City/Country crew while Elizabeth was part of the NSW Under 17 team who raced against eights from Victoria, Qld, Tasmania, ACT, South Australia and Western Australia, all competing as part of the underage Australian Selection Trials held at Penrith.
This was a great opportunity for both of the girls who were able to train and race with some of the best school rowers from NSW who they would normally be competing against. The experience will have great benefit for their school season when they re-join the Redlands crew in Term 3.
Rugby
Over the Easter Holidays our Opens Rugby program, along with two selected Under 16s players, traveled to Berry Sport and Recreation for the 2nd Winter Preseason Camp. Staying together as a group, having focused multiple two hour block sessions across each day allowed us to upskill as a group, working on the fundamental structures that are Redlands Rugby. Our players took to these sessions, working extremely hard across all four days with some sessions being incredibly tough and taking their toll through the Camp.
Now into Term 2 and we can now look ahead our opening Round 1 clash against St Andrews Cathedral School, a team we will face twice this season. Seeing our Juniors and Inters training so hard on Tuesday looks to make this weekend incredibly promising, with all of groups looking cohesive and with a nice level of aggression in all contact areas.
I am pleased to announce one of our strongest 1st XVs of all time. This team will run out against SACS this weekend looking to go one more step further than 2018.

Sailing
During the school holidays two teams from the Redlands Sailing program competed at the NSW Schools Teams Racing Championship 2019 at Georges River Sailing Club on Botany Bay. Competing against 19 other teams, the Redlands sailors demonstrated their skill and speed on the water beating several of the top teams. Redlands Blue, led by Zac Braden, had a stellar first regatta placing 10th overall and narrowly missed out on quarter finals due to a countback after tying with both Cranbrook and Riverview. Redlands Gold, led by Ben Harrington, also had a good regatta placing 19th overall with seven wins. As the first Teams Racing event that these sailors have competed at, the results emphasise how much they have all improved over the last season.
Congratulations to Ella Delaney who competed in NSW Secondary Schools Sailing Championships over the holidays. Ella and her partner came away from the competition with the very converted NSW Secondary Schools CHS Championship Sportsmanship award. An outstanding achievement for Ella at such a high level competition.
Snowsports
Congratulations to George Murphy (Yr 10) for being selected to participate in the Australian Mogul Skiing Academy – Whistler Spring Camp in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, officially sanctioned training camp by Ski and Snowboard Australia.
Please note the Friends of Snowsports Ice Breaker is taking place this Friday at 6pm at Cammeray Golf Club. All Snowsports parents are welcome
The Redlands Snowsports second hand clothing and equipment sale will also be held in Liggins Quad this Sunday 5 May. A great chance to pick up some great deals on equipment for the upcoming snow season.
