Head of Secondary Sport

The upcoming April holidays will represent the second consecutive year Redlands will attend Berry Sport and Recreation Centre for a winter pre-season Camp. A similar opportunity was conducted for summer sports in the October holidays last year. Students who have been selected in our 1sts and the extended squads from winter sports of Cross Country, Rugby and both girls and boys Football will have the opportunity to train each day, aiming to up-skill and build as a squad across each session.

These Camps have been such a success, not only for the benefit to each sporting program but also for what they offer all of the students in their developmental growth. Taking our students away from the bubble of Sydney, having them work together, study and train each day teaches them positive life lessons of teamwork, planning and goal setting. With team building exercises planned across each day, the students will have a chance to reflect on not only what they offer within their team environment, but also what their own individual strengths and weaknesses are.

This will be the first opportunity for Redlands Cross Country to join the camp and will give these athletes a wonderful chance to push themselves across multiple sessions accompanied by their coaches. Berry and the surrounding area offer amazing terrain for long distance running with tough hills, beach runs and trails combined with picturesque farms and landmarks for the students to glimpse at as they are tearing through their runs.

For girls and boys Football we have a number of students returning for their second Camp, these students will know what to expect from the sessions and being able to share that experience with the new students will allow for an added dynamic into the Camp. Both of our 1st XI squads will be at the Camp along with additional students selected from other teams.

For the Rugby program this Camp provided the opportunity for a comprehensive pre-season and team building opportunity. Focused sessions each day allowed the squad to develop specific responsibilities and assignments of groups and individuals. A number of senior players will return to the Camp this year for the second time to take on leadership roles with other students.

Overall, this Camp is designed as a chance for our students to get away from it all, to work together as groups within their chosen winter sports whilst also interacting with girls and boys from in and around the other sports. For the Yr 12s this Camp is a great chance for them to unwind from a busy Term 1 period, prioritise their time with the set study sessions whilst also being able to run out a bit of energy across each of their training sessions.

Unfortunately this year Netball, Hockey and Tennis will not be attending the Camp due to availability of relevant staff, venues or training opportunities. Consideration will be given to these sports for future attendance at similar Camps.

These training Camps are something we hope our younger students aspire to gain selection to in the future.

Students enjoy the sunrise on Camp after a small moment of remembrance on ANZAC day during the 2018 Winter Sport Camp.

Sports Luncheon

Last week we had the pleasure of celebrating 120 years of Sport at Redlands. Thank you to all of the parents, staff and alumni who assisted in making this such a fantastic event. We were very privileged to hear from a range of Redlanders who have participated in sport at the highest level and can comprehend the lessons and the values they have taken from their journeys in both school and elite sport. One of the most memorable messages that I heard was the importance of role modelling for young people in today’s society. Mr Janusz Hooker who made reference to the fact that for young people to succeed, it is important they have role models around them and something to aspire to, “To be it, they need to see it”. I think in today’s society, and the changes we are seeing in sport, and particularly women’s sport, this is an invaluable message for our students and community to take away from this Luncheon. It is important the actions and behaviours we take directly reflect the values we hold close to our school identity.

It was very humbling to reflect on the development that Sport at Redlands has had over the years. All of the Sports staff and I look forward to seeing the Sports program at Redlands continuing to develop and flourish in the years ahead.

Cross Country

It was great to see so many competitors compete across the age groups last week at the Carnival, there were a number of impressive results on new and challenging track. In what was a tightly contested championship, I can reveal that in 4th place was Cowper, 3rd place was Roseby, 2nd place was McDouall which means that the 2019 Redlands Cross Country Championship winners were Dumolo.

Indoor Hockey

In what was a gruelling match on Friday night, our Indoor Hockey team have won the SIHA 18C Competition. Coming up against Ascham, the girls were looking to capitalise on their strong season. With not everything going their way, the girls battled hard during the first half that had the score at 3-3 going into the break. Coming out from half time, Ascham jumped out to a lead, scoring two quick goals before Redlands could fight back. With about two minutes to go, Redlands were down 4-6 but the girls fought really hard and the game finished at 6-6! With extra time pending and a golden goal situation upon us, the girls came out firing scoring the first goal and winning the match! A huge thank you to the girls for all of their efforts throughout the season, and thank you to both our coaches Nick Johnston and Nick Carrington for their support throughout the season.

Netball

NSNA Netball began on Saturday with Redlands entering a number of new teams this year (total of 12 in NSNA), and it was interesting to see how everyone faired against a few tough oppositions. With mixed results across the day it was great to see all the girls giving 100% and listening with intent to the coaching staff. A big thank you to the members of the 1sts Netball team who were there to support and umpire all teams during the day. With Round 2 coming this weekend, we are looking to improve on some of last week’s results with some combinations having a little more experience and training.

Rugby

Over the weekend our Opens and 16s squads travelled to Bowral to compete in the Chevalier College Gala Day playing shorter trial matches against the hosts, along with Trinity Catholic College and Daramalan from Canberra.

These games are a great opportunity to run through the structures and game plans set up through the first few weeks of pre-season and also present a chance to have that first run of contact against three physical sides. Our 16s started the day with a wonderful win against Trinity, James Wells running in a beautiful team try in the second half, the ball moving through the hands of all the backs finishing with James diving over the line. Across all three games our 16s showed some great signs of the team cohesion they had last year, there were some great combinations in the forwards with Benjamin Bootes and Aidan Tyrell leading their group around the park. Elsewhere in the backs, Flynn Garner and Nick Goerner were strong, getting the ball over the advantage line time and time again. Danny Thomas was a welcome addition to this squad, missing from the team last year. His efforts in defence were amazing, taking down opposition players with some great chop tackles across all matches.

For our Opens this was a chance to further develop some key combinations through our Backs and Forwards whilst also resting a few players who pulled up injured from our trial game earlier in the week. With our Captain of Rugby, Cameron Pascoe, one of the players to be rested, it would be crucial to see other players step in and organise our game plan. Thomas Vekas and Max Countryman were two players who did just this, their work rates across both of our matches being incredibly high, allowing less experienced players to be able to pick and choose their involvements rather than carry the workload. James Reid and Hamish Grant continued their wonderful start to the pre-season with some wonderful defensive efforts in both games James being instrumental in our line-outs as a key lifting option and Hamish being everywhere in attack with multiple carries in each game.

These trials were the most physical matches our players will face this season, so to have this opportunity to test ourselves against these squads was such a positive. Across all matches the Redlands boys relished the chance to make the contact, to take it to the opposition an attitude that will be throughout our whole season in all age groups.

I look forward to seeing our Opens and select 16s further develop at the Winter Berry Camp in the second week of the holidays, a Camp that will shape and build our 1st XV in preparation of this 2019 ISA season.
