Issue 11 2019 - 11 Apr 2019

From the Principal

To celebrate the very important School milestone of 120 years of Redlands Sport, we were delighted to host a Sports Luncheon for the Redlands community last Friday. Five Redlanders entertained the audience of parents and friends with their personal stories of competing on the international stage in Rowing (Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987), Rugby (Lachlan McKay, Class of 2000), Sailing (Karyn Gojnich, nee Davis, Class of 1978), Snowboarding (Holly Crawford, Class of 2001) and Swimming (Gergaynia Shelley, nee Beckett, Class of 1957) over the past 60 years.

Beginning with the initial sports of Tennis, Cricket, Cyclos (like Badminton) and Croquet played at Redlands after the School moved to its current Military Road site in 1899, Sport education has long played an important role in our curriculum, enabling students to develop the skills and behaviours our Redlander athletes espoused during the luncheon. These skills such as teamwork, resilience, mental toughness, challenge and learning from mistakes are often far more important learning outcomes than the scoreboard results.

Thank you to the Redlands Foundation team for organising such a wonderful function, to our Sailing partners at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for hosting this special anniversary luncheon and to Ski Japan, People + Culture Strategies, Launch Travel and all our other sponsors for making the event possible.

Yesterday the Junior Campus was awash with colourful costumes as our Preschool to Year 6 students celebrated our cultural diversity and international awareness on International Day. Curriculum lessons had an international focus and a number of parents came to school to share their own international backgrounds and experiences with students, while Prep School students also enjoyed participating in an International Dance incursion.

A big thank you to the members of the RPFA, led by Jo Lloyd and Maria Kinsela, who organised the second hand uniform sale last Sunday. The sale raised $5,458 which the RPFA have very generously donated to the Redlands Scholarship Fund.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members of the Redlands community a restful break over the school vacation period and a very happy Easter, and look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 30 April wearing winter school uniform.

RPFA Second Hand Uniform Sale

A big thank you to the RPFA and parent volunteers who were involved in the Second Hand Uniform Sale last weekend. This effort was not only useful for families but also generated $5,458 towards the means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund.

“Not only does this addition to the Fund touch the lives of children who would otherwise not get the opportunity to attend Redlands, but it also presents a win for the environment. Our team of volunteers (existing and new parents) did an amazing job and during the process parents new to the school had the opportunity to meet other parents of children in the same year, get information and make connections.” Jo Lloyd, RPFA

Spotlight on the Artist

Cameron is a well regarded contemporary artist based in Melbourne. His installations reflect a deep interest in the elements, and the resulting work seeks to make tangible the underlying structures and rhythms of natural forces. Cameron has worked extensively in Australia, most recently at MONA, creating a site responsive artwork that is currently on permanent exhibition. Having worked with many schools, Cameron is very interested in education and children having access to first hand experiences of working with an artist. He will work with Redlands students and staff in creating a site responsive artwork, connecting with the natural conditions and the built landscape, including the current redevelopment on the Senior Campus.

This program would not be possible without a generous support of our partners and sponsors. We would like to thank our main partner, Konica Minolta, for their very generous ongoing support. In addition, we would also like to acknowledge our Gold and Silver sponsors and other supporters for their support.

Sports Luncheon

I enjoyed seeing a number of parents at our inaugural Sports Luncheon on Friday afternoon at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. It was a wonderful event and the clear highlight for many of us in attendance was hearing from four Redlanders who have competed for Australia at the highest levels: Karyn Gojnich who represented Australia in Sailing at the 1988, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games; Janusz Hooker who won a bronze medal in Rowing for Australia at the 1996 Olympic Games; Lachlan Mackay who played Rugby professionally in Australia and overseas, as well as representing the Wallabies; and Holly Crawford who was a 4 time Olympic snowboarder in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.

What struck me most from their talks was how much their messages and insights aligned with the messages we, as a School, have been espousing as central tenets underlying our Vision, Mission and Values here at Redlands. They spoke of the importance of stepping out of their comfort zones and pushing themselves in new directions; of the power of failure, of learning from mistakes and growing from them; of the importance resilience in the face of adversity; of the benefit of having positive role models; and of the importance of teamwork and learning with and from others. Clearly these messages extend beyond a sporting context to all areas of learning here at Redlands.

Cocurricular Assembly

Today we celebrated the Cocurricular achievement from Term 1 in our Cocurricular Assembly. We recognised summer Sports teams, introduced 1sts teams for the upcoming season winter season and acknowledged various performing arts and public speaking accomplishments. We were fortunate to have a Redlander from the Class of 2014, Bryce Collins, return to the School to speak the students in a Q & A session with our Sports Captains. Bryce is a three time NSW State Athletics Champion in the 400m hurdles and recently finished 3rd in this event in the Australian Open National Championships. He has recently completed an engineering degree at UNSW and is working for a global engineering design firm while training for and competing in athletics at the highest level.

Battle of the Bands

On Friday night our Contemporary Music scene burst into life with the Battle of the Bands. Students from Yrs 5-12 performed a variety of numbers, displaying their talent and passion on the stage. The 70’s theme on the night saw lots of old favourites played by the bands and some vintage outfits up on stage, as well. Congratulations to Intermediate Rock Band Winner, Flaming Revolution, comprised of Yr 7 students Will Algar, Will Andrew, Thomas Jackson and Hugo Little for their rendition of Stayin’ Alive; Advanced Rock Bands Winner, The Serpentines, comprised of Yr 10 students Josh Colleran, Beau Davies, Scarlett Keay, Jameson Prescott, Tylor Wessels and June Zhang for their rendition of Mr Blue Sky; and to Unplugged and Overall Winner, Grace Bracks (Yr 11), who wowed the audience and the judges with her rendition of Jolene. Thank you to Mr Kuilenberg and the Music Department, as the well as the AV and Facilities teams for their efforts in making the night such a success.

Cross Country Carnival

Last Thursday we held our House Cross Country Carnival at Macquarie University. It was a great day of competition and House spirit with some outstanding results (individual winners for the various age groups can be found in the Secondary School Sports section of Note Day). Unfortunately, the heavens opened during the final race of the day, the Fun Run, so there were some soggy runners (students and shoes) loading back onto the buses. However, the rain did not dampen the spirits on the day. Congratulations to Dumolo for winning the House Cross Country trophy.

Term 2 Staffing Updates

History teacher and Co-SCO of HSIE (History) Mr Chris Allen will be on Long Service Leave for Term 2 and we wish him well during his leave. During his time away, Mr Rob Skinner will be the acting Co-SCO of HSIE (History). We also welcome Mr Luke Cantrill to the HSIE Department for Term 2. Mr Cantrill joins Redlands from Trinity Grammar School.

Reports

Term 1 Approaches to Learning Reports will be available at the end of the term for all students in Yrs 7-12. The aim of these reports is to bring parents in to conversations which have already been happening for the past few years between students, teachers and Tutors in tracking students’ effort. Parents will see both student self-reflections and teacher feedback on areas of Engagement, Diligence and Behaviour. There will be no marks, teacher feedback on outcomes, teacher comments or Tutor comments on these reports as these will constitute reports later in the year. More information can be found on the cover pages of this upcoming report. We hope these reports are useful feedback for students and parents at this stage of the year.

Textbook Feedback

This year we have moved to a new digital platform for Secondary School textbooks (Box of Books). This platform has allowed us to access more digital versions of textbooks and incorporate a more robust online platform that has enhanced the teaching opportunities for teachers, as well as the learning experience for students. We are excited with some of these possibilities we are already seeing in and out of the classroom. For many subjects, students have still been required to purchase hard copy textbooks and we realise there have been some issues with these purchases through the provider (LJ Harper). Some of the issues have been out of their control as there have been delays from the publishers in the release of some new versions of textbooks. However, we are reviewing our textbook providers for next year to ensure the best service is provided to our community and would appreciate your feedback. (If you have not already done so, please email any comments through to Susan Jones at sjones@redlands.nsw.edu.au). Thank you for your patience this term and your feedback.

ANZAC Day

Redlands will be participating in the Mosman RSL ANZAC Dawn Service at Georges Heights commencing at 5.30am on Thursday 25 April. Two of our senior Prefects will be laying a wreath on behalf of the School during the ceremony in commemoration of this solemn day. Parking is available at Georges Heights, entering from Middle Head Road up Suakin Drive or Best Avenue. Redlands will also be represented at the North Sydney RSL ANZAC Dawn Service at 6.00am being held at the Ridge Street War Memorial in North Sydney. Two other Prefects will be laying a wreath on behalf of the School at this Service. All members of the community are invited to join us at these Dawn Services.

Chaplain

This week has been a wonderful time in Chapel with the talented Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Ensemble performing the Easter Song. The students performed beautifully and gave their time generously. Thank you to those students and the Music staff.

The music reflected the joy of the unexpected discovery of the empty tomb. For Mary and the other women this changed everything: their mourning and pain was transformed to joy and hope.

The disciples who were hiding in fear for their life heard the news of the resurrected Jesus and it changed everything. Now they had courage to proclaim that Jesus alone is Lord. For Christians throughout the ages, the resurrection changed everything. It demonstrated that all of Jesus words were true, that his claim to be the Messiah, God in the flesh and the only way to the Father, were supported by his victory over death. His death was shown to be a perfect and effective sacrifice for our sins.

The resurrection of Jesus, like his other miracles, was a supernatural event. This is the very point. It was easy for Jesus to claim to be God but how would he have demonstrated it? Only if he could do the extraordinary, the supernatural, could he show that he was more than a good man, noble teacher or holy prophet. His resurrection changes his notable life with an unjust death to God’s intervention into human history to demonstrate his great love for us and his desire to welcome all into his family.

This Easter as we enjoy our rest and beautiful weather, I encourage you to take time to reflect, or even read for yourself, the accounts of the resurrection. Perhaps this Easter you may like to engage with God by visiting a church and celebrating the day that changed everything.

Blessings

Cambodia Fundraising

After another very successful Battle of the Bands night with so many amazing performances, the Cambodia 2019 team have successfully raised a total of $2377.87, a great start to their ultimate target.

Students have a personal fundraising target of $750 and through out the year they will undertake individual and team projects to raise the funds. At the end of the year, students will undertake a Service and cultural exchange trip to Cambodia. They will spend some time living with a rural community and contribute to constructing communal facilities using some of the funds they have raised. Additionally they will visit M’Lop Tapang, a not for profit founded by Redlander Johnny McGinley over 15 years ago. We have been returning to visit them every year as they exemplify positive and substantial contributions that can be made by a community based organisation. Our 2018 Cambodia team were able to make a contribution of over $26,000 to the education and health programs that M’Lop Tapang provide in Sihanoukville.

Wayside Chapel Visit

On Monday 15 April, during the school holidays, a small group of interested and engaged students will be attending a morning session at the Wayside Chapel in Potts Point to learn about the work the Wayside does to provide those of our community who are sleeping rough with a safe space and amenities such as showers and emergency clothing, as well as information and referral services within the inner city. While most of the service they offer the community require adult volunteers, this will provide our students with a deeper understanding of the role they play and how individuals can make a meaningful contribution in support.

Year 12

HSC Half-Yearly Assessments & IB Half-Yearly Examinations

Yr 12 Half Yearly Assessments and IB Examinations will once again be held off-site this year at the North Sydney Leagues Club (Norths), 12 Abbott Street, Cammeray. This is the same venue that was used for the Yr 11 examinations last year.

Drama and Music HSC Assessments will still take place at Redlands, as will all assessments and examinations for both HSC and IB students accessing Disability Provisions. These students will be provided with a separate Assessment timetable and rooming advice.

Students will be required to wear full school uniform and conduct themselves in the way which is expected at school. The general expectation is that students will make their own way to and from the venue in Cammeray. However, for those students who require transportation from school to the venue, Redlands will be providing a bus which will depart from the Adams Centre to the venue at 8.20am promptly each morning. For those students who wish to take advantage of this service, please sign-up in advance and provide your mobile number to Vivienne Hoile in the Secondary School Office by 12.00pm on Friday 12 April (last day of Term 1 2019).

Pastoral Care

During Pastoral Care Time this week, students were provided time to familiarise themselves with the Yr 12 Half Yearly Examination requirements and expectations. Tutors also led discussions on how to utilise the upcoming holidays efficiently to prepare for the exams. Generally speaking, students are expected to increase their weekly personal study hours as more time through the day becomes available. Of course, these are suggested guidelines and the quality of study strategies and the work-life balance far out-weighs the time spent on them.

End of Term 1

Congratulations to all Yr 12 students for getting through the first term with grace and determination. We would also like to thank all parents for your consistent support of students through their final year of school. We wish you all a productive and restful break before we hit the ground running with examinations at the start Term 2.

Year 11

Term 1 Holidays

Term 1 has been a steep learning curve for all of us and I would like to thank all parents for their continued support. It is a long term at 11 weeks and I know that the students are looking forward to the break. They certainly deserve to be happy with their efforts this term and I think it is important for students to return in Term 2 refreshed and ready to continue that focused and positive attitude towards their studies and broader schooling experience.

It is also important to have that balance between home learning and unwinding over the holidays. I wish everyone a happy and safe break.

Achieving a Balance in Your Life – Dr Prue Salter

A student with a balanced approach to school and life will:

    • Make time to spend with their family.
    • Make time to spend with their friends.
    • Have hobbies or activities that they do on a regular basis.
    • Play a sport or do some exercise regularly.
    • Have time each week where they totally relax and let their body ‘chill out’.

And despite all this still have time to do the right amount of work for school too.

Battle of the Bands

Congratulations to Grace Bracks for being the Unplugged and the overall Battle of the Bands winner. Her cover of Dolly Parton’s Jolene was simply amazing. Well done, Grace.

Japanese Food and Culture

The Yr 10 Japanese class and Abe Sensei and Okawa Sensei went to Yr 3L class to talk about Japanese food and culture as part of the Junior School’s International Day. Yr 10 prepared worksheets, presentations and Kahoot and interacted with the Yr 3 students. We were able to build a community approach in sharing the Japanese language and culture between Senior and Junior Campus. Well done to the Yr 10 Japanese class.

News
  • Thank you to all Tutors and Mr Warrell for their support throughout Term 1.
  • It is important that students clear and clean their lockers before the end of term.
  • Winter uniform is to be worn from the start of Term 2. Details are contained in the Student Planner.
  • All students have received their School Photo packs. If you are wanting to order more photos, students can collect their personal order information from the Year Advisors Office in A Block (Secondary School Office).
  • Thank you to all students and staff who were brave enough to take a ‘safe’ risk and engage in a lip sync battle ending term on a light-hearted note. Pictured are students in rehearsal this week.

Camp

Thank you sincerely for your assistance with granting permission and returning any additional forms so promptly. Permissions and additional forms are due by this Friday 12 April. Any additional OEG forms should be scanned and emailed to David Gregory (dgregory@redlands.nsw.edu.au). This week, students received an initial briefing on the Camp program (students will receive a thorough briefing in Week 1, Term 2).

Learning Management Alerts

Learning Management Alerts is a Yr 7-8 program designed to assist tracking student academic task management. To date, the program has been successful in assisting students, parents and teachers in monitoring and supporting student learning. Have No Fear…LMAs Are Here!

LMAs are issued by teachers whenever they feel a student may be at risk of falling behind. Individualised reports will be exported and emailed to students, parents and Tutors every Friday. It will briefly outline an action the student can take in order to catch up over the weekend. Our intention is to stimulate informed and supportive discussions during Tutor Time and at home to assist students to catch up and continue to productively manage their workload. We are aiming to start every Monday with a clean slate. If you do not receive an academic flag email each Friday, it simply indicates that one has not been issued for your child in that particular week.

Disclaimers:

  • LMAs are not a punishment. They are a form of support for everybody associated with the academic progress of students.
  • LMAs aim to assist student motivation.
  • LMAs are by no means a supplement for student planning systems, nor a comprehensive overview of upcoming assessment tasks. They simply highlight areas that require immediate attention in order to meet the requirements of a particular course at any point.
  • It is vital that students take responsibility for their studies by contacting their teachers themselves if they feel the information in the database is inaccurate.
  • If a student is feeling overwhelmed, they are encouraged to contact their Tutor or Year Advisors.

Year 7

Students were recognised and congratulated this week for a job well done inside and outside of the classroom.  We started this year together with our Yr 7 Marathon theme with a focus on being “in training” for Term 1. Students have experienced their first round of assessments, home learning, locker and personal organisation and connecting with many different teachers and students in the Secondary School. We are now ready to find our stride in Term 2 by going through everything a second time with more tools in our possession to improve upon our performance and effort in Term 1. Thank you to our wonderful students for the resilience and positivity we have seen throughout this transition and thank you, parents, for your support and communication.

Prue Salter’s Study Tips for This Week

The following is extracted from Regulation of Motivation: Evaluating an Underemphasized Aspect of Self-Regulated Learning by C. Wolters. (Educational Psychologist, 2003, 38(4), pp.189-205).

  1. Environmental Structuring: This is also referred to as resource management and is all about removing temptations and creating an environment that is more conducive to studying. It may even mean studying in a different location such as a local or school library in order to stay focused on the tasks to be completed.
  2. Proximal Goal Setting: Breaking larger tasks into smaller more manageable chunks will help students to feel more motivated about what needs to be done. Setting specific and achievable short-term goals with an allocated time frame can help increase students’ sense of efficacy.
  3. Defensive Pessimism: “I think about how unprepared I am in order to get myself to work harder”. There is mixed research about this approach and the negativity involved. However every student is different and for some students making themselves a bit anxious about what they haven’t done may be necessary to get them to start doing their work.
  4. Emotional Control: Thoughts produce feelings, feelings lead to actions. If we can make our thoughts and feelings more positive, this can lead to more positive actions. When students are feeling unmotivated, strategies such as taking a short amount of time to close their eyes and engage in deep slow breathing, or counting slowly backwards from 10 while thinking positive reassuring thoughts about their abilities to do what has to be done has been found to be beneficial.

This Week in Tutor
  • We were extremely thankful to have four incredible presenters deliver the Yr 7 Burn Bright Program Recipe for Success on Monday this week. Students participated in an all-day session in Redlands Hall with various breakout activities focusing on expanding and strengthening our friendships circles, discussing qualities of being and having good friends, being open-minded and willing to build trust in others and controlling our judgments of others. Presenters shared inspirational stories and engaged students through discussions, activities and reflections.
  • Many awards were given out on Tuesday at our Yr 7 Meeting. Congratulations to all of our athletes, accomplished musicians, avid readers and our many students who have been “caught doing good deeds” throughout the term. A special congratulations to Roseby White for earning the most Credit Points throughout the term as they will be celebrate together with a pizza party in Week 1 Term 2.
Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • Yr 7 Naplan Literacy and Numeracy tests will occur on 13, 14 and 15 May. Students will discuss further details regarding the content of these tests in their respective classes.
  • Yr 7 students will be creating a term planner (students have access in iLearn Pastoral Yr 7 Page) in Term 2 Week 1 to outline assessment due dates and study plans. Assessments begin Week 2 next term so we have discussed planning ahead now to be prepared.
  • In preparation for English Term 2, students should read David Almond’s novel, Skellig, during the upcoming holidays so they can benefit from re-reading sections of it in class when teachers begin the formal close study of it next term.
  • To help reduce the weight of backpacks, students are encouraged to go to their lockers after Period 2, 4 and 6. They are encouraged to determine what needs to go home at those times to avoid the mad rush at the end of the day and then resort to taking more items than necessary home with them. Students will most likely be using the electronic version of textbooks at home and keeping their hard copy at school to use in classes.
  • Learning Management Alerts on Fridays: these emails are sent to parents and students to identify any outstanding work that may be completed over the weekend to help students stay on top of their learning. These alerts are issued after a discussion and reminder from the classroom teacher has already been attempted. These are initiated by the classroom teachers yet sent through the Year Advisor. Please contact the issuing teacher for any subjects specific clarification.
  • Other upcoming dates
    • 6 June – Winter Sport Photos
    • 12 June – Yr 10 Vaccinations, catch ups for Yr 7
    • 12 Sept – Athletics and Waterpolo photos

Time to Pause

In our final assembly of this first term, I spent some time with students and staff reflecting on a message from our very first assembly on the first day of term. It was here that I asked students to focus on just one word that I hoped would define their growth in 2019. Similar to last year, instead of having a longer-worded goal, the focus on just one word helps students and teachers to remember and refer back to this word through the year. As I had shared previously with students, my #oneword2019 was ‘pause’, with the notion that I would be more deliberate in pausing, reflecting and appreciating many things about my life that can sometimes be lost in the everyday busyness. I also shared that unfortunately, I have not been as good as I would have hoped to be with this goal but as one student pointed out, “You have three more terms to go, Mr Guha!”

I also congratulated our many new students and staff on such a successful transition and start to their time at Redlands where many have already added significantly to our community already.

A hallmark of any good school is its busyness and no one could ever say that Redlands does not meet this measure. Therefore, it is even more important for students and teachers to rest in the breaks and I do encourage families to pause and step away from school and find things to do together that brings you happiness.

I wish everyone a restful break and safe travels, where taken, and we look forward to welcoming the students back on Tuesday 30 April. Please note that students should be in Winter uniform for Terms 2 and 3, which includes blazers every day, except Wednesday when we have Sport.

Sports Luncheon

It was a pleasure for me to join many Redlands families at last Friday’s inaugural Redlands Sports Luncheon, an event celebrating 120 years of Redlands Sport. We were delighted and proud to welcome a star-studded group of Redlanders as our special guests: three time Olympic sailor, Karyn Gojnich (Class of 1978), bronze medal winning Olympic rower, Janusz Hooker (Class of 1987), Australian Rugby Wallaby number 803, Lachlan Mackay (Class of 2000) and four time Winter Olympic snowboarder, Holly Crawford (Class of 2001). The four guests were also later joined on a panel Q & A session by Redlands first Olympian, Gergaynia Beckett, who had competed as a swimmer at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne whilst still only 15 years of age and at school!

Our special guests entertained the audience with memories of their school days, stories of their respective journeys to become elite athletes at the highest level, and the many life skills and lessons that Sport had taught them, which they had then applied in other aspects of their successful lives. There were a number of key and recurring messages and one that resonated with me was the notion of resilience after failure and how each of them had used disappointments as a point of learning and a catalyst to move forward. This growth mindset approach to learning is a familiar story that we talk to our students about in many different contexts so it was reassuring to hear Redlands students from yesteryear share this same philosophy.

International Day

Our School’s diversity was again on display this week as the School celebrated our annual International Day amidst a sea of colour as students dressed up in either national costume or national colours. We were again grateful to many parents who were able to come in to classes and share their own international backgrounds, cultures and experiences, which added significantly to the richness of the day.

Staffing News

As we end the term, we say farewell to Music teacher, Mr Michael Warby. We thank Michael for his collegiality and passionate teaching over the last three years and wish him well as he continues his journey as a Music educator closer to home. In his place, we are delighted to welcome Ms Danielle Vita to our Music department and look forward to her energy and passion for the subject which has seen her train and teach in New York before also teaching in Hong Kong and now Sydney.

Second Hand AFL Kit

Next week, our Yr 10 students are heading off to Arnhem Land on a Service trip and the students are hoping to take any AFL gear that families may have that they could pass on to the Aboriginal community who they will spend time with. Any contributions would be gratefully received by the group and can be dropped off at Junior School reception on the last day of term for the Yr 10 students to collect.

Are you Travelling in the Coming School Holidays?

During your travels, we would be grateful if you could collect hotel or airline toiletries as we will be having collection points in the Junior and Secondary School offices for donations in the first few weeks of Term 2. These items will be donated to Every Little Bit Helps who provide toiletries to men and womens’ shelters, people experiencing domestic violence as well as refugee centres.

Vale Helen Carden

It is with sadness that I share with our community the passing of Helen Carden who served for 30 years as the Principal’s Executive Assistant. Helen began her tenure at Redlands in 1980, retiring in 2009 having assisted many staff, students and parents in her role. Helen’s daughter, Rachel Gordon, teaches Kindergarten Red and we send her and the family our most sincere condolences on the passing of her mother. Until recently due to declining health, Helen had continued to show great loyalty and enthusiasm to the School attending Foundation Day assemblies, Musicals and Gala Arts performances. I thank Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms Fiona McKenzie who has been supporting the family and will be leading the funeral this week.

International Day

Wednesday was a special day in our school calendar as we recognised and celebrated the rich diversity of cultures, backgrounds and nationalities that is the fabric of the Redlands community. This difference of culture provides a mixed experience, with varying worldviews that enrich each other and strengthen our community. In Assembly, we discussed this concept and I asked students to stand if they were either born in another country, could speak a language other than English or had a parent or grandparent who were born in another country. More than 90% of the Prep cohort were standing and I asked the students to make sure that they embrace the differences in each other, celebrating everybody’s uniqueness and to make a real effort to include their peers in all school endeavours. The students enjoyed their international dance incursion learning a variety of dances from different countries throughout the day.

Strings Performance

Monday afternoon provided a wonderful performance opportunity for the Yr 2 cohort as they played for their families and teachers. In only one term, it is remarkable to see the progress the students have made under the tutelage of the Music staff. I would like to thank the students for putting in so much effort, specialist Music tutors, class teachers and the parents for their support. A special mention must go out to the Advanced String Ensemble who led the finale and to Mrs Luck who so ably led the performance and the organisation of the afternoon.

Easter Parade and Walk Throughs

On Friday 12 April at 11.30am, Prep classrooms will be open for viewing for parents and caregivers to see some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place already this year. Your children can show you their journals, discuss the displays on classroom walls and guide you through the different learning spaces in the rooms. After this, at approximately 12.00pm, Prep will be holding their annual Easter Hat Parade and parents are very welcome to come and watch the classes. If you wish to participate, we ask that parents create Easter hats with their child at home, prior to this event. The hats can be brought to school on the day and stored in the classroom.

If parents wish to take their child home at the conclusion of the Parade, please inform your class teacher via the Student Planner or Prep Reception in writing. If you are leaving school after the Parade, please collect your child from their classroom and make sure you see the teacher first.

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, hand-made cards would be welcomed.

Junior Campus Easter Service from the Junior Campus Chaplain

“We love because He first loved us” 1 John 4:19

Redlands will be holding the annual Junior Campus Easter Service on Friday 12 April. Parents and family are warmly invited to attend our K-6 Service, beginning at 9.45am. This is a special opportunity for us to come together as a community to give thanks for the term and to celebrate Easter. In the Service, we will reflect as a community on God’s great love for people. One way we can reflect on this love is to find ways within our day to day to share love with others. Thank you so much to those families who have donated eggs to share with people experiencing homelessness in Sydney this Easter. It is not too late to be involved if you wish with the last day for egg donations on Wednesday 10 April. On Easter Sunday, the children’s gift bags will be delivered to Edward Eager lodge a homeless hostel in the city. Our weekly Preparatory Assembly charity funds will go towards purchasing toiletries as a more practical gift for the men and women of the Lodge.

Staff News

It is with regret that I share with you news of Mr Michael Warby’s resignation from Redlands. Mr Warby has been an inspirational leader within the Music faculty, a wonderful Master in Charge of Strings and we wish him all the very best with his new endeavours. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michael for the care he has provided to the students during his three years of dedicated service at Redlands. We are delighted to welcome Ms Danielle Vita to our Music department and look forward to her energy and passion for the subject which has seen her train and teach in New York before also teaching in Hong Kong and now Sydney.

Julia Booth will replace Sue Anderson who will be taking Long Service Leave next term. Julia is familiar to Redlands, having taught vocal and piano tuition in the Secondary School.

After many years of casual teaching for the Preparatory School, we farewell Marilyn Ramage from Redlands this term. Marilyn will be spending more time with her grandchildren and we wish her all the best in the coming years.

Happy Holidays

It has been an industrious and happy first term for the students of Prep. It has been delightful to watch the deep learning and growth in abilities of the students in only 11 weeks of school. Kindergarten especially, have shown a mature and steady approach to their first term in a formal school setting. I have valued parent feedback and ongoing support, and further encourage you to continue the open communication between staff and school, as we work in partnership for the positive outcomes of the students. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a lovely break, take time for yourselves, rest and re-energise for another dynamic term. For those travelling abroad, take care and stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 30 April for Term 2.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

International Day

What a wonderful celebration of diversity, nationality and culture last Wednesday when Redlands House participated in International Day. It was lovely to see so many children and educators celebrating their family origins. Days such as these assist children to acknowledge, embrace, and respect difference. It further allows us to understand our personal, cultural, and ethnic identity while simultaneously encouraging and providing settings for students to come to terms with their own culture and ethnicity.

Safety Message

Many of the Redlands House families wait for older siblings in the Prep School after collecting children from Transition Gold or Preschool. For their safety, we do not allow children to play in the Prep School playground and on the climbing equipment. Recently, several children who were out of sight and hearing distance from their responsible adult, have had accidents in the playground. Please take notice of the signs in the playground and ensure your child does not play in the out of bounds areas. Thank you for your understanding and action of this very important safety message.

Winter Uniform

A reminder to families as we enter Term 2 for all students to be wearing their winter uniform. For Transition Gold, students have a choice of wearing their uniform or PE uniform. This means a white long sleeve shirt, tunic/pants and tights/socks for the girls. The boys wear their grey shorts or long pants with a long sleeve shirt. The PE uniform remains the same with optional tracksuit pants, fleecy vest or fleecy jumper.

For Redlands House children, this means a long sleeve yellow shirt with tracksuit pants, fleecy vest or fleecy jumper. For girls opting to wear tights under their skort, please make sure they are navy blue.

Please also remember that the children will still require a hat each day.

Are you Travelling in the Coming School Holidays?

During your travels, we would be grateful if you could collect hotel or airline toiletries as we will be having collection points in the Junior and Secondary School offices for donations in the first few weeks of Term 2. Thank You From Mrs Huon

A big thank you to all of our wonderful families at Redlands House for a fabulous first term for 2019! The staff highly value and greatly appreciate your ongoing support and contributions to our Preschool program. I encourage you to continue to provide us with your feedback regarding day-to-day Preschool life, events or activities. It is this feedback that contributes to our Quality Improvement Plan and helps us to navigate through change when necessary. My email contact is chuon@redlands.nsw.edu.au or please feel free to pop in for a chat at any time.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a lovely break, take time for yourselves, rest and re-energise for another dynamic term. For those travelling abroad, take care and stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 30 April for Term 2.

Head of Secondary Sport

The upcoming April holidays will represent the second consecutive year Redlands will attend Berry Sport and Recreation Centre for a winter pre-season Camp. A similar opportunity was conducted for summer sports in the October holidays last year. Students who have been selected in our 1sts and the extended squads from winter sports of Cross Country, Rugby and both girls and boys Football will have the opportunity to train each day, aiming to up-skill and build as a squad across each session.

These Camps have been such a success, not only for the benefit to each sporting program but also for what they offer all of the students in their developmental growth. Taking our students away from the bubble of Sydney, having them work together, study and train each day teaches them positive life lessons of teamwork, planning and goal setting. With team building exercises planned across each day, the students will have a chance to reflect on not only what they offer within their team environment, but also what their own individual strengths and weaknesses are.

This will be the first opportunity for Redlands Cross Country to join the camp and will give these athletes a wonderful chance to push themselves across multiple sessions accompanied by their coaches. Berry and the surrounding area offer amazing terrain for long distance running with tough hills, beach runs and trails combined with picturesque farms and landmarks for the students to glimpse at as they are tearing through their runs.

For girls and boys Football we have a number of students returning for their second Camp, these students will know what to expect from the sessions and being able to share that experience with the new students will allow for an added dynamic into the Camp. Both of our 1st XI squads will be at the Camp along with additional students selected from other teams.

For the Rugby program this Camp provided the opportunity for a comprehensive pre-season and team building opportunity. Focused sessions each day allowed the squad to develop specific responsibilities and assignments of groups and individuals. A number of senior players will return to the Camp this year for the second time to take on leadership roles with other students.

Overall, this Camp is designed as a chance for our students to get away from it all, to work together as groups within their chosen winter sports whilst also interacting with girls and boys from in and around the other sports. For the Yr 12s this Camp is a great chance for them to unwind from a busy Term 1 period, prioritise their time with the set study sessions whilst also being able to run out a bit of energy across each of their training sessions.

Unfortunately this year Netball, Hockey and Tennis will not be attending the Camp due to availability of relevant staff, venues or training opportunities. Consideration will be given to these sports for future attendance at similar Camps.

These training Camps are something we hope our younger students aspire to gain selection to in the future.

Students enjoy the sunrise on Camp after a small moment of remembrance on ANZAC day during the 2018 Winter Sport Camp.

Sports Luncheon

Last week we had the pleasure of celebrating 120 years of Sport at Redlands. Thank you to all of the parents, staff and alumni who assisted in making this such a fantastic event. We were very privileged to hear from a range of Redlanders who have participated in sport at the highest level and can comprehend the lessons and the values they have taken from their journeys in both school and elite sport. One of the most memorable messages that I heard was the importance of role modelling for young people in today’s society. Mr Janusz Hooker who made reference to the fact that for young people to succeed, it is important they have role models around them and something to aspire to, “To be it, they need to see it”. I think in today’s society, and the changes we are seeing in sport, and particularly women’s sport, this is an invaluable message for our students and community to take away from this Luncheon. It is important the actions and behaviours we take directly reflect the values we hold close to our school identity.

It was very humbling to reflect on the development that Sport at Redlands has had over the years. All of the Sports staff and I look forward to seeing the Sports program at Redlands continuing to develop and flourish in the years ahead.

Cross Country

It was great to see so many competitors compete across the age groups last week at the Carnival, there were a number of impressive results on new and challenging track. In what was a tightly contested championship, I can reveal that in 4th place was Cowper, 3rd place was Roseby, 2nd place was McDouall which means that the 2019 Redlands Cross Country Championship winners were Dumolo.

Indoor Hockey

In what was a gruelling match on Friday night, our Indoor Hockey team have won the SIHA 18C Competition. Coming up against Ascham, the girls were looking to capitalise on their strong season. With not everything going their way, the girls battled hard during the first half that had the score at 3-3 going into the break. Coming out from half time, Ascham jumped out to a lead, scoring two quick goals before Redlands could fight back. With about two minutes to go, Redlands were down 4-6 but the girls fought really hard and the game finished at 6-6! With extra time pending and a golden goal situation upon us, the girls came out firing scoring the first goal and winning the match! A huge thank you to the girls for all of their efforts throughout the season, and thank you to both our coaches Nick Johnston and Nick Carrington for their support throughout the season.

NSNA Netball began on Saturday with Redlands entering a number of new teams this year (total of 12 in NSNA), and it was interesting to see how everyone faired against a few tough oppositions. With mixed results across the day it was great to see all the girls giving 100% and listening with intent to the coaching staff. A big thank you to the members of the 1sts Netball team who were there to support and umpire all teams during the day. With Round 2 coming this weekend, we are looking to improve on some of last week’s results with some combinations having a little more experience and training.

Rugby

Over the weekend our Opens and 16s squads travelled to Bowral to compete in the Chevalier College Gala Day playing shorter trial matches against the hosts, along with Trinity Catholic College and Daramalan from Canberra.

These games are a great opportunity to run through the structures and game plans set up through the first few weeks of pre-season and also present a chance to have that first run of contact against three physical sides. Our 16s started the day with a wonderful win against Trinity, James Wells running in a beautiful team try in the second half, the ball moving through the hands of all the backs finishing with James diving over the line. Across all three games our 16s showed some great signs of the team cohesion they had last year, there were some great combinations in the forwards with Benjamin Bootes and Aidan Tyrell leading their group around the park. Elsewhere in the backs, Flynn Garner and Nick Goerner were strong, getting the ball over the advantage line time and time again. Danny Thomas was a welcome addition to this squad, missing from the team last year. His efforts in defence were amazing, taking down opposition players with some great chop tackles across all matches.

For our Opens this was a chance to further develop some key combinations through our Backs and Forwards whilst also resting a few players who pulled up injured from our trial game earlier in the week. With our Captain of Rugby, Cameron Pascoe, one of the players to be rested, it would be crucial to see other players step in and organise our game plan. Thomas Vekas and Max Countryman were two players who did just this, their work rates across both of our matches being incredibly high, allowing less experienced players to be able to pick and choose their involvements rather than carry the workload. James Reid and Hamish Grant continued their wonderful start to the pre-season with some wonderful defensive efforts in both games James being instrumental in our line-outs as a key lifting option and Hamish being everywhere in attack with multiple carries in each game.

These trials were the most physical matches our players will face this season, so to have this opportunity to test ourselves against these squads was such a positive. Across all matches the Redlands boys relished the chance to make the contact, to take it to the opposition an attitude that will be throughout our whole season in all age groups.

I look forward to seeing our Opens and select 16s further develop at the Winter Berry Camp in the second week of the holidays, a Camp that will shape and build our 1st XV in preparation of this 2019 ISA season.

Battle of the Bands Yrs 5-12

Cambodia Fundraiser

The Music Department would like to congratulate all students who performed in the Battle of the Bands last Friday night. Battle of the Bands is a fundraising event that showcases the contemporary elements of the Redlands Music program and provides emerging young artists with the opportunity to perform in a live context. As a fundraising opportunity, this concert connects the wider school community and supports the Redlands Service program where students have the opportunity to experience the culture of Cambodia trip first-hand. Our outstanding hosts for the evening were Dan Feng Zhao (Captain of Strings) and Ilann Labouze (Captain of Small Ensembles). This year’s competition was adjudicated by James Nash and Iseult Sheehy.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the contributions of Ms Arienne Brodie (MIC Performance) and Rock Band specialists Mr Peter Atkins, Mr Diego Idarrago, Mr Nathaniel Smith and Mr David Wooltorton, for mentoring and supporting finalists in this competition. From a technical perspective, thanks to Mr Janis Auzins (Audio Visual Manager), Benjamin Peate and students Kate Keller, Mitchell Turner, Tom Wightwick and Andrew Verschoor in delivering spectacular sound and lighting. We are grateful for the wonderful administrative support provided by Ms Pip Tame and our Facilities teams led by Mrs Liz Loveridge and Mr Rod Loveridge. As an important part of this popular school community event, we would like to acknowledge the Cambodia staff team led by Janis Auzins, Bronwyn Lihou, David Linehan, Lisa Ole, Archondia Thanos and Yr 11 student volunteers who managed ticket sales, event promotion and the overseeing of fundraising stalls. Altogether, the 2019 Cambodia team raised over $2000 with the funds set aside to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged children and their families in Cambodia.

Music Community Working Bee

Thank you to Emma McLaren (President), The Friends of Music Committee and various mothers who assisted the department to prepare scores for relocation into the new Music library storage units on Saturday. The focus of this community morning was to assist with the sorting, organising, cataloguing and shelving of all Music Ensemble scores and ongoing data entry in updating our Music library spreadsheets. There is still some data entry that needs to be completed and if you are available to help by completing work on a weekday in the Music Department, please send Emma McLaren an email g_e_mclaren@hotmail.com.

Music Staffing

This week we farewell a number of Music staff from our department, some who will be taking school leave and others will be embarking on new and exciting Music adventures. Mrs Susan-Gai Anderson will be on Long Service Leave throughout Term 2 and her Early Childhood and Preparatory School Music classes will be managed by Ms Julia Booth, a current Music Specialist within our Extra Subjects Music program. Mrs Emily Garth will be taking Maternity Leave with the arrival of her first child and will return to her position later in the year. The students within this private Vocal Studio have been reallocated to the department’s other leading Voice Technicians, Mrs Kylie Carter, Ms Emma Cooperthwaite and Ms Julia Booth. Double Bass and Cello specialist Mrs Mary Rapp will be joining the teaching faculty at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, an exciting journey in tertiary education, while Academic Music teacher (K-6) Mr Michael Warby will be exploring other Music teaching opportunities. We would like to thank Ms Rapp and Mr Warby for their excellent contributions to the Redlands String program, in mentoring our young musicians, especially Mr Warby for his overseeing and management of this program as MIC of Strings. His commitment to growing the String Ensembles over the past three years has been evident in the number of students pursuing instrumental studies here at Redlands. The School is currently recruiting new Music Specialists to cover these roles and announcements of new staff will be made at the commencement of Term 2.

In teaching on the Junior Campus next term, the Music Department welcomes Danielle Vita, an experienced Music Educator, Choral Conductor and Strings Specialist. Her teaching practice incorporates exceptional skills in Off-Schulwerk and Dalcroze methodologies and she is experienced in developing Music curriculum for Primary School children. Danielle has taught at Public School 97 in New York City, the International Montessori School and the Tsung Tsin Primary School in Hong Kong. We welcome Danielle to our team of Music Specialists at Redlands.

Senior Campus

Senior Music Festival

Back to the 80’s

Auditions are now open to Yr 11 and 12 students who participate in both Academic Music Classes and the Cocurricular Music Ensembles program. The 2019 Senior Music Festival will be presenting a diverse range of repertoire that spans across the decade. While students will have the opportunity to present repertoire from their Higher School Certificate or International Baccalaureate Performance Portfolio, there may also be the opportunity to be considered for various solo opportunities that feature within larger ensemble works. Audition forms and Information Packs will be available from Senior Music Reception from lunchtime on Friday 12 April (Week 11).

Redlands Composition Competition

The Music Department is pleased to announce the 2019 Music Composition Competition. This creative opportunity is designed for any aspiring young composer in Yrs 7-12 who is currently enrolled in the either the Academic Music program, Cocurricular Music Ensembles program or Extra Subjects program. Students are encouraged to continue developing original works for submission at the end of Term 2. Application forms will be available from Music Reception in Week 1, Term 2.

Senior Campus Ensemble Attendance

Students are reminded about the importance of regular attendance to all Music Ensemble rehearsals and in meeting goals set at the start of the year to reach a high standard of performance excellence. Morning rehearsals commence at 7.15am and students should be moving to rehearsal rooms by 7.10am. Absence due to camp and/or illness will be the only accepted reason for non-attendance. It is essential that you contact seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you are unable to attend any rehearsals.

Junior Campus

Yr 2 Strings Presentation

On Monday, all Yr 2 students presented a Strings performance to parents in showcasing their instrumental learning this term. Parents, grandparents and friends certainly enjoyed students displaying their singing skills, pizzicato playing on the Violin and Violoncello and their understanding of the pitch by playing on the A and D strings. Thanks is extended to our Music teachers and specialists for their guidance and mentoring of students throughout this term.

Attendance at Ensembles

A reminder that punctual attendance at all ensembles is an expectation of all students enrolled in Cocurricular ensembles. Prep Ensembles commence at 7.45am, with supervision from 7.35am, and Junior School Ensembles commence at 7.15am with supervision from 7.05am. The exception to these times are Junior Voices, Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Band which all commence promptly at 7.30am. Attendance is integral as all ensembles have begun rehearsing for upcoming events.
