Head of Secondary Sport
With the end of the School year nearing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff, coaches and students who contribute to Redlands Sport.
Our Redlands Sports staff, Mr Cameron Ellis, Ms Kate Seebohm, Mr Jack Gooding and Mr James Petering, are a dedicated and talented team who continue to develop our programs and all the students within them. A lot goes on behind the scenes to ensure that all details related to the administration and management of Sport is completed and our students get the best learning experience possible. I thank them for their support and continued effort in educating the students of Redlands.
Redlands is very lucky to have excellent coaching staff across all Sports. Led by our Directors of Coaching, Ms Renae Camino, Ms Annie Stalley and Mr Gerry Gomez, it is our coaches at Redlands where the rubber hits road. They are ultimately the people who deliver our Sport programs and develop the immediate connection and rapport with the teams, squads or crews who they are charged with. Many of our coaches balance their commitment as a Sports coach with university timetables, additional employment opportunities or family commitments. They are dedicated individuals who love sport and are deeply aware of the opportunities it provides to young people. Our coaching staff are the life blood of our programs and I thank all of them for their passion and commitment to Redlands Sport.
But, more important than our staff and our coaches, are our students. We are blessed to be able to work with students and families who are caring, compassionate and grateful people. Every day our students continue to surprise us with their talent and drive to improve. It is the moments where students demonstrate the extra commitment to training, the appreciation for their sport, the joy of competition, the humility in victory or the grace in defeat that continues to inspire all that we do. I thank all of our students who have shown commitment and gratitude for the challenge that Sport provides.
Redlands Sport has seen significant changes and developments throughout 2018, and I look forward to sharing further growth of our programs with the Redlands community in 2019.
I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Girls Basketball
Another great weekend for Girls Basketball. Our Junior A team travelled to the Central Coast and found themselves in a close fought game that was sent into overtime. At the end of the overtime period the score was still tied, with the golden point rule coming into play. With Central Coast starting with the possession, our girls had a strong task ahead of them. Despite Redlands playing some great defence, Central Coast managed to score and end the game, winning by two points. Our Junior B team had a massive 56 point win against a travelling Blue Mountains team, and our Junior C Girls came away from St Spyridon with an 11 point victory. Our Inter A and Inter B Girls both had strong wins against Chevalier and St Spyridon respectively. Our Firsts girls played some fantastic basketball, trading point for point with Central Coast for the full 40 minutes. Some great team play in the 4th quarter saw Redlands with the upper hand, winning the game by three points. Our Open B Girls had another great win when they travelled to Oakhill.
Boys Basketball
It was a great atmosphere at NBISC on Saturday, with many of our Boys teams at home against St Pats. We had some great results in three of the Div 1 Boys’ games. Our 13A Boys showed they are a team to be reckoned with, winning against St Pat’s in overtime and securing 2nd place on the ladder at the mid-point of the season. The 14A Boys played some of their best basketball yet this season, to upset a strong St Pat’s team. Our 15A Boys had their first win of the season, a very well-deserved win against a St Pat’s team that didn’t back down until the final siren. Our 17A Boys and Firsts Boys teams both put up a strong fight, but St Pat’s were just too strong in these divisions. Our B Boys teams had a clean sweep against St Patrick’s C teams with convincing wins in almost every age group. A special mention to the 15B Boys team who displayed some great team work and composure in the final minutes of the game. A tough round for the C Boys against some highly skilled Oakhill teams. Well done to the 17C Boys who managed to pull away with a 14-6 win a the final buzzer.
Best of luck to all teams this Saturday. A reminder that there will be no training during the final week of school.
Touch Football
There were only two games for Redlands teams over the weekend with our Junior As and Senior Cs sides both coming up against undefeated teams from St Andrews Cathedral School.
Our Junior Cs continued to show how far they have come as a team with players combining brilliantly in attack against the more experienced opposition. The Juniors were missing a few of their key players, especially in defence, where SACS began to put our Redlands players under enormous pressure. It was so encouraging to see all of the players in the team lift and play to the last whistle in a tough game that they will learn from and develop into stronger players.
Our Senior C side played an amazing back and forth game against SACS with the final score of 1-1 not illustrating enough how much attacking was on display. The Senior Girls, throughout the match, displayed some wonderful attack with Matilda Rose Williams and Emilia Built leading the team around the park with some wonderfully effective running. The team’s defence was also incredible, managing to hold out SACS attack time and time again. This result continues this teams climb up the ladder in their division and, with continued practice in the new school term, we should see this Senior C playing some wonderful Touch Football at Finals time.
