Rowing

During the recent school holidays our seniors returned to Berry for the annual October Sculling Camp where it is the first opportunity for the whole senior squad to come together to complete a technical block of training where they can refine their single sculling but also set themselves clear goals for the season ahead.

As part of this camp the race in our internal Head of the Broughton Creek, a 12km single scull time trial the length of the waterway where we train which can take in excess of 60min to complete. This is a significant challenge for the new senior rowers while the more experienced rowers relish the opportunity to test themselves each year, with the boys racing downstream and the girls upstream.

Head of the Broughton

BOYS

  • 1st – Angus McInnes (52:02.1)
  • 2nd – Jack Meek (53:12.3)
  • 3rd – Zach Borness (53:56.9)

GIRLS

  • 1st – Alanah Winder (57:26.6)
  • 2nd – Annabelle Hwang (58:47.4)
  • 3rd – Jemima Hugman (59:09.7)

Meanwhile, the junior rowers who took advantage of the optional holiday training are already improving in leaps and bounds with many of them starting to be able to row in the single sculls competently. The benefit of this training is already evident in some of the land testing completed this week, with some impressive ergo scores and PB’s from all year groups.

Looking ahead, our students will be preparing for their first regatta of the season on Saturday 2 November in Berry Park (Newcastle).

Sailing

As we welcome a new term, this is a friendly reminder to ensure all students have the gear required.

Students are required to have a Redlands blue sports hat, white long sleeve sun shirt and navy shorts. All items are available from the uniform shop.

RSYS will provide all sailors with a PFD. However, we encourage sailors to purchase and use their own if they intend to sail outside the program.

In addition to the equipment below, we recommend that sailors also consider buying sailing gloves, a sailing start watch and a wetsuit for dinghy sailing.

Required Uniform

– To and from RSYS: Redlands sports uniform.
– On-water: Redlands white sports hat, white long-sleeve sun shirt, Redlands sports shorts, enclosed shoes (old runners,) spray jacket, sunscreen, start watch, towel and a jumper for after.

Touch Football

Over the holidays:

Our Girls Touch Football High Performance Squad recently participated in the Qld All Schools Touch tournament in the Under 18s division over the holidays. Our girls (from Years 9-11) demonstrated impressive development throughout the tournament, competing against mostly Year 12 teams. Their performance showcased their skill and was an exciting way to lead into the season!

Back on Redlands turf, we had multiple students attend our optional sessions who developed their game skills and awareness. Looking forward to games beginning to see how we progress.

Reminders:

As representatives of our Touch Football program, it’s important to remember the commitments required from each player:

  • Training Sessions: Players must attend 2 training sessions per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, available in the morning or afternoon).
  • Saturday Sport Commitment: Attendance at Saturday matches is mandatory.

Important Note: Even during exam blocks, all players are expected to attend training and matches as scheduled.

If you need to report an absence, please ensure that a parent or carer logs it through the ABSENCE button in Pulse.

Unexplained absences from training sessions or matches may result in school disciplinary action.

Games will kick off next weekend, 26 October.

Seasonal fixtures are now available in the files tab on the Touch Football Pulse page.

Weekly games will have timings confirmed on calendar for each team.

Before Round 1, please ensure you have:

– Redlands sport shorts and an athletics singlet (or Redlands sports polo) to play in.

– A Redlands hat for sun protection during training and games is encouraged.

Additional Opportunities

If you’re interested in further developing your skills, representative pathways outside of school are starting their seasons. Please email us to connect with your nearest club.

Get ready for an exciting season ahead!

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)
