Issue 31 2024 Term 4 Week 1 - 17 Oct 2024

From the Principal

As part of our celebrations of 140 Years of our School this year, I hope you will join me at the Festival of Redlands this Saturday 19 October from 1pm – 5pm on the Junior Campus. As I have often stated over the past few years, a focus of mine as Principal has been on further connecting and bringing together our varied and vibrant community, and this event is a wonderful opportunity for students, staff, alumni and parents and carers to celebrate this special milestone for Redlands.

This community-focused event will be the capstone of this significant year for Redlands and will be a time for our entire community to gather to reflect on our past, appreciate our present and look to our future. I would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation to all of the parents and carers, staff, students and alumni whose efforts have made this event possible. Specifically, I would like to thank RPFA President, Brittne-Aspen Whitelaw, all of the RPFA Executive and members, and our Events Manager, Julie Wood, who have brought this event to fruition. I look forward to seeing you at the Festival on Saturday!

Please register your family’s attendance here to earn House Points for the Festival of Redlands House Trophy.

On Monday I spoke to the Secondary School students at their assemblies about the importance of honest and critical self-reflection as they commence the term to ensure they get the most out of these last few months of school.

Specifically, I shared with them the words from the opening of the Serenity Prayer as a useful guide to their self-reflection.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.”

While sometimes I know it can be difficult to have this serenity, courage and wisdom when we hold the mirror up to ourselves and engage in self-reflection, I am confident that if students are able to do so, they will have an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding final term ahead.

Community Update

Welcome to Term 4. We trust that you had the opportunity to enjoy some family time over the holiday period to rest and renew as another busy term of community events and activities awaits.

Our highly anticipated Festival of Redlands will take place this Saturday from 1 to 5pm on our Junior Campus where we will shine a light on 140 years of our School highlighting our rich and diverse culture, growth, talent and community. The Festival will showcase Performing Arts, Sports, Academics, Visual Arts, Innovative Design and Outdoor Education and feature an international food extravaganza, student art auction and alumni café (with barista made coffee). The Redlands spirit will spring to life through a House Challenge where participation in activities and friendly competition will generate points towards the awarding of the Festival of Redlands Cup. Be sure to pick up your House wristband and do not miss the House tug-of-war that wraps up the Festival.  Thank you to the many parents, staff, students and friends of Redlands for bringing this unique event together. More information, along with ticketing details, can be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

Parents and carers who are interested in shaping the future of the School are invited and encouraged to nominate for the various RPFA Committee positions that will become available at the 2024 RPFA Annual General Meeting (AGM), to be held at the School on Thursday 24 October. The meeting notification can be found here. The AGM provides the opportunity for our community to hear how the RPFA serves the School and includes an update from our Principal. The meeting concludes with the election of the committee and there is no obligation to nominate if attending the AGM.  For more information on how you can become involved as a volunteer at Redlands please visit the RPFA section.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books. If you would like to join Book Club, and learn where we are meeting this month or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 30 October at 7pm, when we will be discussing Safe Haven by Shankari Chandran.

Seen a book you’re dying to read and discuss? Recommend it for our next read!

Unplugged AI

This Term 4, two of our wonderful Class Parents, Daniella Aburto and Anita Fonseca, will be facilitating an “Unplugged AI” lunch club for Prep School students! Over six fun-filled sessions, students from K-2 will explore the basics of Artificial Intelligence through engaging games and hands-on activities – no devices needed! They’ll develop key skills like critical thinking while having fun with friends. They’d love for your kids to join them on Fridays at lunchtime as they dive into AI in a playful, screen-free way!

Head of Secondary School

It’s been a wonderful start to Term 4 even though we have missed Year 11, who are on Camp, and Year 12, who have either commenced their final examinations or are studying and commence them next week.

Our 2024 HSC cohort responded well to the English Examinations that took place this week. As one of their English teachers I was very keen to hear their perspectives and experiences. Paper 1 was fair and students responded positively. The Advanced Paper 2 offered an interesting question for Module C, requiring students to write about the benefits to leading a life less convenient in a discursive medium. For most students this was a little unsettling as they were not required to write a reflection which has been the norm for many years. It meant that students had to shift and adapt – and while they may have felt this was challenging (undoubtedly, it would have been), the staff are confident that they would have tackled this question thoughtfully and articulately. It was lovely to hear their, yelps, groans, mini-screams and incessant chatter after the English papers. Lots of teachers came out to chat and to be honest, it was hard to move them on. A fun picture of ‘the boys’ post-exam for your enjoyment.

Next Tuesday we formally induct our 2025 Year 12 Student Leaders. We are very much looking forward to this event as it enables the whole Secondary School community to bear witness to their transition to the final year of school and their enhanced role as the student leaders. Year 11 have shared a variety of experiences on camp this week and ready to step up in the coming weeks and months.

This week we met with Stage 4 and 5 students in separate assemblies.  Dean of Students (Acting) Ms Matthews spoke to students about being their best selves, through intentional anchoring to the School Values, especially when utilising digital devices.

I then spoke to students about the School’s intentional focus on ensuring a smartphone free environment to enhance social, wellbeing and academic performance. We know that in 2023 the NSW Government consulted with students, parents and teachers and determined that school students should not have smartphone devices at school. Although this has been the our School’s expectation for some time, many students still carry their smartphone. This term, staff will actively enforce this directive for all students from Year 7 to 12.

Given that teens are on screens around 16 hours per day (112 hours per week), we are mindful of our obligation to support them to be more fully present in what is going on around them.

While at school, or engaged in school-related activities, we want to support students to improve their real life connections with each other, to take risks by having to speak to and approach one another, which can be a bit uncomfortable at times, and to enhance their use of language. Given that language is the way we make meaning, build connection, heal, learn and develop our self-awareness, we embrace all opportunities for students to develop their competencies in this non-digital space.

Whilst a few students have had their phones confiscated and found themselves in a detention this week, we believe in our young people’s capacity to engage, embrace and trust in the School’s supportive mechanisms. Assistant Dean of Students (Acting) Ms Lucienne Willis ran the lunchtime smart-device infringement detention with a focus on reflection. She was so proud and impressed with the thoughtful and articulate responses she received from our students.

“I think the time I spend on my phone does negatively impact my wellbeing. Comparison culture is inevitable and seeing posts from others only makes me more self-conscious.”

“I think Snapchat as a whole deteriorates relationships as there is a major lack of genuine connection. Instead, we send photos of our bedroom walls, the sky or anything else that avoids connection.”

“There are times, for example standing at the bus stop, on public transport or in social circles where everyone is looking at their phone and I do feel pressure to even pretend to use mine as it’s seen as cool and normal.”

“I, like many young people my age, commonly feel quite stressed or anxious due to ideologies and stereotypes portrayed on social media.”

“One time I started to see gym related content on Instagram portrayed by huge muscular men who I now realise are drugged and the extreme, but after seeing this content I felt really anxious about how I don’t look like them and doubted my body image.”

“Social media intensifies feelings of FOMO as it’s constantly available for you to know where and what your friends are doing.”

“Your phone makes you dependent and to rely on it since your phone often seems like it can offer instant gratification or solutions.”

Term 4 Wellbeing Webinar

Parents are warmly invited to attend our Term 4 Wellbeing Webinar

Tuesday 29 October 6.00pm-7.00pm

Navigating the Social Media Landscape: New Laws, Online Communication, and Digital Literacy

As discussions around social media restrictions and bans gain momentum, it’s essential for parents to stay informed about the possible changes and their impact on teens. This presentation will explore the current legislative landscape, share key research findings, and help parents prepare for potential backlash from teenagers related to new social media regulations. We will also discuss how messaging and texting platforms are central to teens’ social interactions, highlighting both risks and benefits, and provide practical strategies for fostering social media literacy and critical thinking. By teaching teenagers to critically assess information, make safe online choices, and engage responsibly, families will be empowered to navigate the digital world with greater confidence.

All parents are encouraged to attend our School counsellor-led webinar which can be accessed here, in the comfort of your own home.

Crafting with Nature: Beekeeping Club’s Lip Balm Workshop

During Tuesday lunchtime at the Beekeeping Club, students from Years 7-10 recently had the opportunity to make their own lip balm using natural ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, almond oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E oil. They also had the chance to personalise their lip balm with a variety of essential oils, making the experience both creative and hands-on. Partnering with Rooftop Bees, the club continues to offer enriching and sustainable activities, with sessions held every lunchtime on the rooftop in Week A. This experience gave students a unique insight into the versatile uses of beeswax while encouraging them to explore sustainable practices.

UN Youth Voice Competition

On Tuesday 15 October, Year 7 and 8 students from Redlands participated in the United Nations Youth Voice Competition. This public speaking competition encourages critical thinking and problem-solving to address issues affecting our community, country and the world.

Students explored topics ranging from the negative impacts of tourism to languages at risk of extinction. They not only showcased their speaking skills but also pitched innovative and creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

The following students participated in the preliminary round held at James Ruse Agricultural High School.

  • Aryana Mishra Mall
  • Sophie Wong
  • Hugo Steadman
  • Oscar McHattan
  • Aaron Oh
  • Connor Price
  • Lachlan Carter
  • Clementine Roumanoff
  • Natalie Bain

“Affordable housing must be a priority. We need to build affordable homes closer to city centres and develop mixed-use areas where residential, commercial, and public spaces coexist. This reduces travel times and fosters community. The UN can facilitate collaboration between governments, NGOs, and the private sector to tackle housing affordability. By creating international partnerships to share ideas and technology, the UN can help provide affordable housing solutions across different regions. Collaboration between countries facing similar challenges accelerates the development of effective housing strategies on a global scale.” – Clementine Roumanoff (Y8)

“Tourism has a cultural cost. It leads to wear and tear on famous landmarks. I’m sure everyone has seen walls in gorgeous locations marked with names and dates. Take a look at Uluru. Despite pleas from the Indigenous people, tourists used to climb Uluru, which is considered deeply disrespectful because it’s a sacred site. This has been banned since 2017, but the damage and disrespect over many decades still linger. Tourism offers incredible experiences and economic growth, but it also brings significant challenges to nature, humanity, and culture. With stricter regulations and more conscious travel choices, we can diminish these effects. The key is balance, responsibility, and respect for both people and the planet.” – Aryana Mishra Mall (Y7)

“The installation of renewable energy is essential for a city’s liveability. Renewable energy, such as wind and solar, can be reused without depletion. It has positive environmental impacts and is significantly more effective than fossil fuels like coal, gas, and oil. Yet, renewable energy powers only 9.8% of New South Wales, with fossil fuels accounting for the remaining 90.2%. Since renewable energy produces no greenhouse gas emissions and helps mitigate climate change, a shift to renewables is crucial for Australia, particularly for New South Wales.” – Oscar McHattan (Y8)

If students wish to get involved in competitions like the UN Voice Competition, Model UN runs every Thursday lunchtime in LH4.9 and LH 4.10 and Public Speaking Club occurs every Monday afternoon in LH 4.3, 4.4 and 4.6.

The Great Book Swap for Indigenous Literacy Foundation: Friday 1 November

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation invests in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities to provide the tools and resources they request to shape the direction of their children’s future. They run three core programs including: Book Buzz that aims to develop pre-literacy skills and familiarity with books for babies and toddlers, Book Supply that gifts books that aim to interest and engage the Community in reading and sharing books together and Community Publishing that supports adults and children to write and illustrate their own stories in their own language.

On Friday 1 November, the Secondary School is holding a Great Book Swap to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This will involve students bringing in a gold coin donation and a book for the swap:

  • in Week 2 if they are in Year 7/10
  • in Week 3 if they are in Year 8/9/11.

Then, on Friday Week 3 (1 November), those who have brought in a book will get to enter the swap on the Fahl Garden at lunch and find themselves a new book to read! Other fun activities will happen on the day – watch this space!

The Christmas Drive: Tuesday 26 November

This year at Christmas, Redlands is supporting Share the Dignity’s appeal: It’s in the Bag. News from Last Term

National Youth Championships (CIS)

Sam Wightwick attended the National Youth Champions for Touch Football in the last week of Term 3. The team delivered an impressive performance, reaching the semi-finals where they faced CHS. Despite a hard-fought match, the team narrowly missed out on advancing, with a final score of 6-3 in favour of CHS. What made this achievement even more remarkable was that the CIS team played with only 10 players by the end of the match, while CHS had a full squad of 14. This result is a testament to the determination, resilience, and skill displayed by Sam and her team throughout the competition. Sam was a standout player from the tournament, who as a result, was awarded the CIS Coaches Award for her outstanding contribution. Her coach reached out to the school to commend her, highlighting how brilliantly she played her role within the team and praising her overall performance throughout the competition.

Congratulations Sam on a wonderful achievement.

NSW CIS Athletics Championships

On 24 September, Redlands had 23 athletes compete at the NSW CIS Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

Geography Yr 11 HSC

In Geography, Yr 11 HSC students have been exploring life in High Latitudes. In the last week of Term 3, our wonderful Geography Teacher and resident Antarctic expert Mr Thomas brought in clothing and equipment used in his previous expeditions to this incredible continent. Students had the opportunity to see the value of layering clothes, how to engage in scientific research and what recreational opportunities exist for our Antarctic researchers. This engaging and hands-on lesson shows us the importance of understanding the world around us.

Year 10

Welcome Back

I am delighted to welcome everyone back for the start of Term 4! It’s wonderful to hear that students enjoyed a well-deserved break, whether they spent time with family and friends locally or travelled further afield. For those who stayed in Sydney, it was a great opportunity to make the most of the lovely weather.

I would also like to take this opportunity to formally re-introduce myself. Originally from Scotland, I spent seven years in Hong Kong before moving to Australia, where I’ve lived for the past nine years, settling in Sydney after time in Melbourne and Darwin. I have been the Assistant Year Advisor to the cohort since the beginning of Year 9, and in my five-plus years at Redlands, I’ve taught Geography, Theory of Knowledge, and Legal Studies at various points as well as being a Tutor and the Assistant Year Advisor for the Class of 2022. My partner and I recently welcomed the birth of our first child, Jade to our family. Our cat Nugget is not yet as delighted as we are, but seems to be the only other member of the household to be obtaining the desired amount of sleep!

Term 4 Key Events

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, things are already off to a busy start. The term began with the Burn Bright program on Tuesday, where students explored how to tackle the challenges ahead and how they can support one another as they embark on their HSC and IB studies.

Next Tuesday (Week B), we will hold a whole-school assembly to introduce the new student leadership team. It’s exciting to think that our current Year 10 students will be stepping into these roles next year! They are encouraged to seize the leadership opportunities available and bring forward ideas on how to shape the school environment and culture they want to be part of.

In Week 3(A), students will have a session with the Careers team, offering valuable guidance and information as they think about their futures. Meanwhile, it’s time to start preparing for the Year 10 Camp at Myall Lakes in Week  – a highlight that many students are looking forward to but one that is not without its challenges. Often the most valuable experiences are those which do not come easy. To make the most of this, the students will be supported on camp by their tutors and Redlands staff led with assistance from the experienced OEG guides.

Another important date to mark on the calendar is Week 7(A), when the Australian Business Week takes place. This week will be followed by the much-anticipated Harbour Cruise on the 28th of November – a well-deserved treat for all the hard work this term.

Finally, the school year will wrap up with festive Christmas celebrations in Week 8, culminating in Speech Night on Wednesday, the 4th of December.

Smart Devices

As mentioned by Ms Van de Peer, this term there will be an intentional focus on ensuring a smart-device free environment in the Secondary School to enhance students’ social, wellbeing and academic performance by minimising distractions to promote a more focused learning environment.

  • Smartphones are not permitted in any setting while students are at school or engaged in school related activities during Term 4.
  • Smartphones are to remain in student lockers and students will not be permitted to have their smartphone on their person at any time during the school day. This includes lessons, tutor, recess, lunch, sport training, sport games, the Dance Academy, school-associated travel and all cocurricular activities, including those occurring after school.
  • There will be no exceptions or exemptions (excluding those students who need to log medical details on a smartphone).
  • Parents who need to urgently contact their child during the school day should phone the Secondary School Office on 02 9908 6407 and refrain from texting, calling or emailing their child while they are at school.

Upcoming Service Opportunities

Mary’s House Walk

Mary’s House Services was founded in 2015-16 by a dedicated group of residents from Sydney’s northern suburbs. The Mary’s House refuge was established to address the significant gap in government funded services and to save lives in the region by providing support for women and children to feel safe, hopeful, and empowered to begin rebuilding their lives.

The Walk

Sign up here to join the Redlands Team.

  • It’s free for students: register and come along to walk for awareness.
  • Do that little bit extra and raise some money for Mary’s House/ask people to sponsor you to walk.
  • Get your family/other adults to come along: $85 registration

I hope the student are excited for all that Term 4 has in store, there is something for everyone to be a part of. It will be great seeing the students thrive as they embrace the many opportunities ahead!

Year 9

Welcome Back

It was lovely to welcome all our Year 9 students back on Monday. Many of them looked rested and ready to take on the challenges of the term.

Examinations Next Week

The examinations next week will be a good opportunity for students to test out the knowledge and skills they have learned in their courses of study. Further information about examinations, including the Week 2 examination timetable, can be found on Pulse.

Smart Devices at Redlands

Smartphones act as experience blockers. Once introduced into a child’s life, they diminish other forms of non-smartphone-based experiences, which are crucial for their developing brains.

‘The Anxious Generation’, Jonathan Haidt 2024

This week, students were introduced to the School’s new policy on smart devices, particularly smart phones, AirPods and smart watches. The school is seeking to foster student personal interactions, develop student engagement in the school day and help curb reliance on/addiction to devices.

Ms Van de Peer spoke directly to students on Monday explaining that smart devices, particularly smartphones, are no longer permitted in any setting while students are at school or engaged in school-related activities during Term 4. Smartphones are to remain in student lockers and students will not be permitted to have their smartphone on their person at any time during the school day.

There are a few important implications flowing from this.

  • Students need to ensure that they have a working lock on their school locker to keep their phones safe.
  • Students purchasing food from the canteen should bring in a debit card or use their FlexiSchools account to pre-order food.
  • Students with smart-watches may still wear them but only to tell the time (and not to check for messages, notifications, etc…).

While this may be a challenging change for some, we are confident that Year 9 will embrace these new requirements and benefit greatly from the increased interactions they will have, in person, with each other. Further details can be found in Ms Van de Peer’s Term 4 welcome letter on Pulse.

2024 QLD All Schools Touch Football Championship

During the October break a group of Year 9 and Year 11 students went to Queensland to participate in the prestigious Gold Coast Titans All Schools (GCTAS) Touch Football Championship.

Congratulations to Amelie Dewar, Belle Monty, Elodie Melvin and Maya Turton for their selection as part of this team and for their performances as part of the competition.

Japan Trip 2024

During the break I had the privilege of accompanying several Year 9, 10 and 11 students to Japan on a language’s immersion tour.

During this 12-day trip we visited significant places such as Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Nara, as well as a day trip out to our sister school, Jutoku High School.

The sense of adventure and maturity with which all students engaged with the program contributed to a wonderful trip with lasting memories and bonds made between our travel party.

Year 8

Week 1 – Welcome to the Home Stretch

Welcome back to Term 4 at Redlands! It has been lovely to see everyone back on campus this week, looking relaxed, revitalised and ready for the short and fast term ahead. Certainly, as we have moved through this first week, all I could think of was ‘where has this year gone’!? Before we know it, the year will have concluded, and we will all be preparing for the summer holidays and festive season. However, there are some significant events to navigate before then and, as a cohort, we need to be ready to face them so we can be the best we can be!

It is important to note that our cohort’s Service focus will continue in Term 4; however, this time, rather than working on Service initiatives in our Tutor groups, students are being challenged to complete individual Service projects. Today, in Tutor, students were given details of their individual service projects, which are designed to extend their service beyond the school, focusing on small-scale actions they can take in their immediate surroundings, such as at home or in their local community. This approach aims to make Service Learning both enjoyable and impactful, allowing students to create positive change for those around them, while laying the foundation for future Service initiatives in their senior years.

Students will have two strands of Service to choose from: life skills at home and volunteering in their local community. We will be encouraging students to choose one of these to focus on, although they may attempt both, depending on their interests and what their schedule allows. Through the life skills at home strand, we will be encouraging students to focus on helping out more with family tasks, building good habits and strengthening relationships with family and friends. This will aim to develop empathy, self-discipline and responsibility, plus, it will help them to prepare for dorm life at Moonbah next year. Through the volunteering in the local community strand, we will be encouraging students to get involved in local activities that fit their interests and schedule. This will be a great way to show initiative, learn new skills and gain confidence by helping others.

Ms Wang and I look forward to students continuing to think beyond themselves, developing their understanding of the importance of service and gratitude.

Upcoming School Service Opportunities

In addition to our own individual service project, there are also a couple of school-wide service projects students are encouraged to engage in this term.

The Mary’s House Walk gives students and families an opportunity to get out and support this organisation.

Sign up here to join the Redlands Team.

  • It’s free for students: register and come along to walk for awareness.
  • Do that little bit extra and raise some money for Mary’s House / ask people to sponsor you to walk.
  • Get your family / other adults to come along: $85 registration

Indigenous Literacy Foundation

In remote Communities across Australia there is often no infrastructure such as libraries or bookstores. Access to reading material is extremely limited and this impacts the achievements of Indigenous children.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s three programs, Book Supply, Book Buzz and Community Publishing, focus on ensuring access to quality resources, including books in First Languages, publishing community stories and supporting communities and families to lead the entire process to ensure leadership, ownership, and authenticity is held with community elders and residents.

What can we do? Bring in a book and a gold coin donation in Week 3 to help support the cause. Then on Friday 1 November, you will get to enter the Great Book Swap and pick up a new book to read and enjoy.

Examinations in Week 4

This week, in Tutor time, we reminded students of their upcoming Yearly Examinations in Week 4. These examinations will be a good opportunity for students to test out the knowledge and skills they have learned in their courses of study. Further information about examinations, including the Week 4 examination timetable, can be found on Pulse.

Welcome to our New Students!

This term, we welcomed some lovely new faces into our Yr 8 cohort at Redlands: Ella, Eva, Giulia and Oscar. While it has definitely been a busy start for them all, sometimes with an overwhelming amount of new information to absorb, all four students have embraced their new school opportunity positively, guided by welcoming peers and supportive teachers.

Leadership Induction Assembly

Next Tuesday, 22 October, we will officially induct our new student leadership team in an important formal assembly. It is a significant occasion in the school calendar, where we hear from our new student leadership team as they outline their plans for the year ahead. It is also an opportunity for us to congratulate our new leadership team and to show gratitude for the time our leaders will spend supporting Redlands over the next year.

Students are reminded that, as it is a formal assembly, they are expected to wear their school blazers.

UN Youth Voice Competition

On Tuesday, a collection of Yr 7 and Yr 8 students from Redlands participated in the United Nations Youth Voice Competition. This public speaking competition encourages critical thinking and problem-solving to address issues affecting our community, country and the world. Students explored topics ranging from the negative impacts of tourism, to languages at risk of extinction. They not only showcased their speaking skills but also pitched innovative and creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Congratulations to our Yr 8 students who participated in the preliminary round held at James Ruse Agricultural High School: Natalie Bain, Lachlan Carter, Oscar McHattan, Aaron Oh, Connor Price, Clementine Roumanoff and Hugo Steadman.

Some of our students’ thoughtful comments are copied below:

‘Affordable housing must be a priority. Collaboration between countries facing similar challenges accelerates the development of effective housing strategies on a global scale.’ – Clementine Roumanoff

‘The installation of renewable energy is essential for a city’s liveability. Since renewable energy produces no greenhouse gas emissions and helps mitigate climate change, a shift to renewables is crucial for Australia, particularly for New South Wales.’ – Oscar McHattan

The key is balance, responsibility, and respect for both people and the planet.” – Aryana Mishra Mall (Yr 7)

Welcome Back

Welcome back to what promises to be an exciting and eventful final term of the academic year. It’s hard to believe how quickly the year has flown by, and now we are in the last stretch – a time of reflection, growth, and celebration of the many accomplishments our students have achieved so far.

Focus for the Term: Positive Choices and Finishing Strong

As we enter Term 4, our focus will be on students making positive choices and encouraging them to finish the year on a high note. In our assemblies and classroom activities, we will be discussing how our actions and decisions, big and small, can help us make the most of the final weeks of the academic year. We will encourage students to reflect on their goals, celebrate their progress, and identify areas where they can continue to improve. It’s a good time to think about how they can give their best efforts in their learning, friendships, and contributions to our school community.

Think U Know

from Redlands Dean of Students P-6, Katie-Louise Clinton

On Tuesday, our Year 5 and Year 6 students participated in an informative Think U Know presentation led by Constable Amy Quye, our School Youth Liaison Officer for North Shore Police Command. This engaging session provided valuable insights into online safety and responsible behaviour within our school community.

During the presentation, students learned practical strategies to enhance their online safety, including:

  • Identifying Trusted Adults: Understanding who they can turn to for help and support.
  • Distinguishing Friends: Recognising the differences between online friends and those they interact with in person.
  • Respecting Privacy: Being mindful of sharing personal information and the importance of keeping it private.

At Redlands, we remain committed to raising awareness about personal boundaries and the importance of safety in both the physical and digital worlds. We encourage parents to continue these important conversations at home to reinforce the skills and knowledge our students gained during the session. We appreciate your ongoing support in helping our students navigate their online experiences and safely.

Junior Startup Bootcamp

From Redlands Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist, Liz Green

After the success of the Secondary School Startup Bootcamp and keen interest from our Junior School counterparts, we are delighted to launch a new cocurricular offering – Junior Startup Bootcamp: Handmake a Difference. Powered by Macquarie University Incubator and Young Wisdom, this seven week after school program will guide students through the process of finding a product they’d like to bring to life, customer profiling, prototyping, budgeting, branding, sales and finally the ultimate test – selling their product at a market stall. The program is open to students in Years 5 and 6 and will run on Thursday afternoons in the Peter Cornish building between 3:30-5:30pm. Please see the attached flyer for more information and to secure your child’s place in this exciting program.

Head of Preparatory School

A big welcome back to all our families and students, I do hope that the everyone has had a restful break from routine. We welcome Gavin Niu (1B) and his family who join our Year 1 cohort this term.

The last term of our school year in Prep is crucial for both academic and social development of our students. It serves as a culmination of what students have learned, allowing them to reinforce their skills and knowledge through review and application. This period fosters a sense of achievement, boosting their confidence as they prepare for the next grade. Additionally, it is going to include fun activities and transitions that help build strong relationships among peers and teachers, laying a solid foundation for future learning and emotional resilience. With this said, it is important that attendance is consistent this term for students, assessments will be occurring throughout the next few weeks and end of year celebrations and traditions are so very important in creating memories and connections with friends.

If you wish to discuss taking leave with your child early or would like to talk to me about anything pertaining to 2025, please come and see me or book in a time with Ms Pontes this term.

Term 4 key events have been previously published in Note Day and can also be found on the School Calendar on Pulse. I encourage everyone to keep an eye in the calendar throughout Term 4.

Festival of Redlands

Two more sleeps until the big day! The Festival of Redlands is going to be quite the event with a feast of things to do and experience for the whole family. Our Redlands House and Prep School students are particularly proud of the class artworks that they have created.

We were incredibly privileged to have artists Chilu Krile and Simone Bourgeois design, guide and oversee these incredible art works. On behalf of all of us in Prep, thank you Chilu, Simone and all the parents who helped for your time, patience and enthusiasm in creating these masterpieces!

All class artworks are on display in the prep reception for the remainder of the week and I strongly encourage all families to have a look in person or jump on the link below now as the auction is now live!

Term 4 Wellbeing Clubs

Thanks to Ms Anderson, the Term 4 Wellbeing Lunchtime Clubs are up and running and we have new and exciting clubs on offer. This term we’re excited to facilitate an Unplugged AI lunch club for Prep School. Over 6 fun-filled sessions, students from K-2 will explore the basics of Artificial Intelligence through engaging games and hands-on activities – no devices needed! They’ll develop key skills like critical thinking while having fun with friends.

The purpose of these clubs is to provide opportunity for students to try something different at lunchtime with friends or to connect with new friends in a safe and quiet environment where a staff member is on hand to provide direction and support.

Please have a conversation with your child as to which club they might like to visit this term. A reminder that no signing up is necessary.

Rowing

During the recent school holidays our seniors returned to Berry for the annual October Sculling Camp where it is the first opportunity for the whole senior squad to come together to complete a technical block of training where they can refine their single sculling but also set themselves clear goals for the season ahead.

As part of this camp the race in our internal Head of the Broughton Creek, a 12km single scull time trial the length of the waterway where we train which can take in excess of 60min to complete. This is a significant challenge for the new senior rowers while the more experienced rowers relish the opportunity to test themselves each year, with the boys racing downstream and the girls upstream.

Head of the Broughton

BOYS

  • 1st – Angus McInnes (52:02.1)
  • 2nd – Jack Meek (53:12.3)
  • 3rd – Zach Borness (53:56.9)

GIRLS

  • 1st – Alanah Winder (57:26.6)
  • 2nd – Annabelle Hwang (58:47.4)
  • 3rd – Jemima Hugman (59:09.7)

Meanwhile, the junior rowers who took advantage of the optional holiday training are already improving in leaps and bounds with many of them starting to be able to row in the single sculls competently. The benefit of this training is already evident in some of the land testing completed this week, with some impressive ergo scores and PB’s from all year groups.

Looking ahead, our students will be preparing for their first regatta of the season on Saturday 2 November in Berry Park (Newcastle).

Touch Football

Over the holidays:

Our Girls Touch Football High Performance Squad recently participated in the Qld All Schools Touch tournament in the Under 18s division over the holidays. Our girls (from Years 9-11) demonstrated impressive development throughout the tournament, competing against mostly Year 12 teams. Their performance showcased their skill and was an exciting way to lead into the season!

Back on Redlands turf, we had multiple students attend our optional sessions who developed their game skills and awareness. Looking forward to games beginning to see how we progress.

Reminders:

As representatives of our Touch Football program, it’s important to remember the commitments required from each player:

  • Training Sessions: Players must attend 2 training sessions per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, available in the morning or afternoon).
  • Saturday Sport Commitment: Attendance at Saturday matches is mandatory.

Important Note: Even during exam blocks, all players are expected to attend training and matches as scheduled.

If you need to report an absence, please ensure that a parent or carer logs it through the ABSENCE button in Pulse.

Unexplained absences from training sessions or matches may result in school disciplinary action.

Games will kick off next weekend, 26 October.

Seasonal fixtures are now available in the files tab on the Touch Football Pulse page.

Weekly games will have timings confirmed on calendar for each team.

Before Round 1, please ensure you have:

– Redlands sport shorts and an athletics singlet (or Redlands sports polo) to play in.

– A Redlands hat for sun protection during training and games is encouraged.

Additional Opportunities

If you’re interested in further developing your skills, representative pathways outside of school are starting their seasons. Please email us to connect with your nearest club.

Get ready for an exciting season ahead!

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)

Junior Sport

Welcome to Term 4, we hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays. A detailed package outlining the term ahead has been shared with all families last week. Please take the time to review this.

Rep Sport Summer Sport Term 4

Good luck to all our sporting teams who recommence their summer sport season this week. A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

  • Ability: in direct comparison to other students across the sport
  • Attendance: any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved
  • Attitude: this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absentees etc.

Non-Rep Sport recommencing Term 4

Students were reminded about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 4. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

Calling Future Viola and Double Bass Players!

Are you looking to stand out in the orchestra and take on an exciting musical challenge? Our ensembles are in need of talented students to learn the viola and double bass! Both of these instruments play essential roles in creating the rich, full sound of an ensemble. Whether you’re interested in deep, resonant basslines or the warm, unique voice of the viola, now is the perfect time to start learning. Get in touch with Ms Moses if you are interested.

Ensemble Attendance and Expectations

A reminder that weekly attendance at ensemble is essential for all students enrolled in cocurricular ensembles. Regular participation is essential for students’ musical growth and the success of our ensembles at important upcoming end-of-year events. We greatly appreciate the  support of our community to help our students all rehearsals until the end of term.

We also ask that all students ensure that they bring all required equipment, and are regularly practising their parts at home in the lead up to end of year events.

Upcoming Junior Curriculum Instrumental Performances

Term 4 is always an exciting time for our curriculum instrumentalists, as we aim towards our biggest performances of the year. Yr 2 and Yr 3 Strings are looking forward to performing in the Strings Concert, and Yr 4 and 5 students are busy preparing for the MIP Concert. In our lessons we have spoken about those pesky nerves that sometimes get in the way, and how we can help to overcome them by being well prepared and ready to perform. We encourage students to continue regular practice at home, and our tutors are always available to help with any tricky passages. Please save the date for the following performances which will be open to parent and carer  visitors:
