Secondary Sport

I trust that you have all had a safe, enjoyable, and restful holiday period. We are very much looking forward to welcoming all students back next week to what is going to be a fantastic year for Redlands Sport. As we look to 2024 our vision is to create an integrated and transformative sports program that will serve as a powerful tool for student growth and development. We envision our program to serve as a holistic platform for character development in teaching students not only how to succeed in competition but also how to thrive as responsible and compassionate individuals. We aim to unify our community and create lasting impacts on the personal growth and development of each participant.

Assistant Head of Sport (Coach & Student Development) – Graham Nes

I am pleased to announce Graham as the new Assistant Head of Sport (Coach & Student Development). Hockey

Congratulations to our 3 Redlands students who recently competed for NSW at the U18 Indoor Hockey National Championships, with significant  success. The tournament was held in Canberra from January 12-16.

Eloise Trueman (Hockey Captain 2023)  played with the NSW State team, who won the gold medal and are National Champions.

Jess Van Extel (Hockey Captain 2024) and Megan Kirkpatrick (Year 11) competed with the NSW Blues team, who came fourth.

Underwater Hockey

Congratulations to Buddy Miller’s achievements in Underwater Hockey last year!

Last December, Buddy was selected to represent NSW in the NSW Under 15s Underwater Hockey team for the National championship in Cairns in April 2024.

In May 2023 Buddy was selected for inclusion in the larger NSW Under 15s Underwater Hockey development squad. As a part of the state development squad, Buddy attended a tri-state development camp at Geelong Grammar School in Geelong, Victoria in August, along with representative players from Victoria and South Australia. Buddy also represented Sydney at the NSW State Titles in Newcastle on November 4 2023 in the junior division, winning a bronze medal.

A letter from the president of NSW Underwater Hockey was addressed to Mr Corcoran, our Principal, highlighting Buddy’s great contribution to the sport.

Rowing

During the recent summer holidays a significant number of students within the Rowing program took up the option to continue their training both on water and land leading into the recent Rowing camps. Our senior rowers attended a 6 day camp in Berry while the Juniors had a Sydney based 4 day camp. Students initially completed crew selections for the upcoming regattas. Students then trained very hard within their crews working on their skills and technique, alongside gaining more boat speed.

This weekend will see a number of our Senior and Year 9 girls crews compete at the Kings/PLC regatta while the rest of the students will have training based at Mosman Rowing Club.

All training information including detailed schedules is available on Pulse and has been emailed to families.

Absences and Running Late to Morning Training

As always, students and families are requested to send any absences or running late notices for morning water sessions to me via email or text message.

Tennis

A warm welcome to new and returning Redlands Tennis players! We hope you all had a restful break and are ready to start training and competition! A huge congratulations goes out to TNB 1 (Kabir Yohannan, Isaac Swann and Apoorv Pilani) who took out first place in the Premier League 1 competition over the holidays – we look forward to seeing their performance this term as well!

We are also excited to announce that the new Mosman Lawn Tennis Club facilities are near completion, and we will be moving to train with these courts full-time in the coming weeks. Please note while the courts are being finished for Week 1 and 2 there will be no Tuesday morning training.

We will be facilitating retrials/challenges during Thursday training in the lead up to the start of competition so please make sure you reach out to myself or Stuart (Grand Slam Tennis) if you are interested in this. We will be finalising teams and releasing the playing roster and squad sessions mid-Week 2.

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2023 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather.
  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

A reminder that all key information for the season has been uploaded onto the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse, if you have any additional questions, please reach out to the appropriate Sports Administrator listed at the bottom of this page.
