Issue 1 2024 Term 1 Week 1 - 01 Feb 2024

From the Principal

After weeks of being on campus preparing for the school year ahead, it was wonderful to welcome back the students this week and feel the positive energy they bring to our campuses. Even though I have had many years of teaching and working in schools, I still get that giddy, nervous excitement on the first day of school and am sure many of the staff and students felt the same.

This year is a special one in the history of our School as we will be celebrating our 140th anniversary. I look forward to the many events this year in celebration of this milestone, starting with the Twilight in the Garden parent welcome on Friday 16 February.

On Tuesday I loved getting around to all three sections of the School and having the opportunity to speak to students at five different opening assemblies: Prep; Junior; Years 7 and 8; Years 9 and 10; and Years 11 and 12.

At the Prep School Assembly, I reminded the students of my message from the end of last year that not only is it OK to make mistakes, but it is also important to embrace these as we often learn the most from our failures.

At the Junior School Assembly, I was impressed that some of the students remembered my three words I asked them to think about over the holidays in preparation for the school year ahead: Wonder, Curiosity and Teamwork. I also had the opportunity to formally welcome our new Acting Head of Junior School, Mr Ian Holden, at the assembly.

For the Secondary School assemblies, I focused on the theme of trust and how a focus of mine this year is further fostering a culture of trust across Redlands as it is the glue that successfully binds a school together. I believe we have an incredibly trusting and supportive community, but as I often say, it is “too good not to be better”.

Trust is also embedded in our Redlands values of:

  • Honesty – being open and truthful with each other;
  • Responsibility – being accountable for our actions;
  • Compassion – showing care and empathy for one another;
  • Fairness – treating others justly and impartially;
  • Moral Courage – being able to stand up for what we know is right, even if it is hard; and
  • Respect – both in ourselves and others.

Therefore, I am proud to be a part of a trusting community that does not stereotype or discriminate others based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity or sexuality, but instead celebrates everyone’s individual differences.

I am proud to be part of a trusting community that encourages students step beyond their comfort zones without fear of failure or ridicule.

And I am proud to be a part of a trusting community that is full of gratitude not spite; selflessness not selfishness; and hope not cynicism.

I am truly excited about the year ahead and look forward to seeing many of you at various events in the weeks and months ahead.

Student Achievement

We were thrilled to hear the news last weekend that Daisy Thomas (Yr 12) won the silver medal in the Big Air Freestyle Skiing event, representing Australia at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. This podium finish, which was Australia’s first ever medal in Big Air Freestyle Skiing, follows her 5th place in the Ski Slopestyle final the previous week. Congratulations Daisy on such exceptional achievements.

Community Update

A very warm welcome to the school year to our new families and welcome back to our current families as we celebrate Redlands 140th year in 2024 #Redlands140. This significant milestone will be marked through and with our community of current and former students, staff and wider community as the year unfolds. We trust that you were able to enjoy a happy, healthy and peaceful time with your family and friends over the holiday period.

It’s been exciting to see our new school uniform in and around the School this week as our two year transition period commences. The feedback from new and existing families has been overwhelmingly positive. As we transition to our new uniform, we are delighted to advise that a sustainable recycling program for your unwanted ‘old’ uniforms has been developed with the details to be communicated in the coming weeks. This timeline provides our community with the opportunity to consider their uniform requirements following the commencement of the Term 1.

We are delighted to be able to come together as a community early in 2024 through a number of key and much loved Redlands events including Twilight in the Garden on Friday 16 February and our Year 7 Meet and Greet on Monday 26 February. Our Twilight in the Garden event provides a wonderful opportunity for our new families to connect with our School community on the Fahl Garden on our Senior Campus. We are expecting this to be another sold out event so please purchase your tickets early here.

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community. All of these important groups highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands. These community groups provide a wonderful opportunity for us all to stay connected, included and informed.

The best place to stay up to date on what’s happening at Redlands is through Pulse. Pulse can be accessed through the Redlands App that is available for download in the App Store for Apple users and Google Play for those using Android. The App, like Pulse,  provides a quick and easy connection with the School for all of the important information our community seeks – contact information, term dates, events, sport fixtures, school and absentee notices and other key links.  It also allows parents to subscribe to specific groups of interest without having to see information that is not of interest to you. After downloading the App, you simply enter your Redlands login to access and personalise your settings.

It should be noted that the WhatsApp groups used by some parents and carers are not formal channels of School communication. All communication from the School is shared via email, Pulse and Note Day. While WhatsApp groups may be considered an easy and quick reference point, this platform should not always be considered as a trusted source of information. Where information is sought or clarification is required, we encourage parents to contact the relevant section of the School directly or through feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au, as early as possible to avoid confusion and inconvenience.

During my time at Redlands, I have often heard said that our strength is our community, and I have personally witnessed and experienced that warm, welcoming and supportive Redlands community over the past three years, as both a staff member and current Redlands parent.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

All the best for 2024.

Expanding the High Country Campus

Originally developed by the School in partnership with the Redlands Parents and Friends Association, High Country Campus was opened in 1996 with two accommodation buildings. Our flagship Winter School is a nine-week residential program currently for Year 10 students based at our High Country Campus outside Jindabyne. This unique hybrid on snow and on campus program provides exceptional experiential learning for students to develop their confidence, independence and resilience, working towards social, academic and personal goals in a residential environment that is both supportive and challenging.

The Experiential Learning Program for our Year 9 students will commence in 2025. Students will have the opportunity to spend either Term 1 or Term 2 at our High Country Campus, with specifically tailored academic, pastoral, leadership, service, First Nations and outdoor education programs. To accommodate the whole of Year 9 split over two terms, we will be expanding our facilities to house approximately 20 more students and 12 more staff. This expansion of High Country Campus facilities will also provide the opportunity for more students to experience our Winter School program.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA:
Meet your RPFA Committee

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) is a group of committed parents who support the broad activities of the Redlands School’s diverse community. The RPFA is your first point of contact for Redlands community events or support. Check back here each week to meet 2024 committee members or to find to how to get involved.

RPFA FIVE
with President Brittne Whitelaw

Name: Brittne Whitelaw
Role: RPFA President
Kiddos: Y5: Ollie Y7: Bear

If you could choose a RPFA theme song (or super hero) what would be the title name?

I’d combine the two and say the Song “Heroes”  would best fit! I think every one of our Parents and Friends (and kids) are their own sort of superhero. Even though the smallest of things (like getting out of the door on time in the morning!) can take a heroic effort, but the best thing is we can be there to support each other through our amazing community.

Why did you decide to join RPFA?

The desire to meet other families, help bring our community together and support our school to be the best it can be. I think you get back what you put in, and that it’s important to invest ourselves in our community and set an example for our children to do so as well.

Why would you encourage other parents to volunteer to join RPFA?

Every parent and friend of the school is already a member of the RPFA the minute they join the School! Taking the next step and volunteering your time in either a more regular position such as a class or year parent, or simply popping in to help with our 2nd Hand Uniform Sales, book reading or scribing, or even event planning from time to time will help you to get to know the community and school better and enjoy the Redlands experience to the fullest.

If you could trade places with your children for a day what would you most want to experience?

The innocence and wonderment of learning something new and big for the first time. When my children come home and tell me about things they learn in school with sheer joy and excitement that may seem mundane to us adults, it reminds me that the simplest of things are actually pretty awe inspiring and we shouldn’t take them for granted.

Parent Power Needed: Join the Team in 2024!

Teachers and Class Parent Coordinators are doing a Shout Out for Class Parents and Year Coordinators.  A great opportunity to meet other parents and get involved in your school community. All you will need is a sense of fun, enjoy people wrangling, a working with children check, and have a spare couple of hours a week. Please fill in this form to indicate your interest.

The Week in Pictures

Last week Book Club members were already out and about attending the launch of the book-based film The Dry: Force of Nature staring Eric Bana

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Wishing everyone a safe and smooth start to the school year. Looking forward to a fab year…thanks to all the FRPFA Committee members ready to roll in 2024 and Redlands 140th year!

Head of Secondary School

Welcome

The Redlands Secondary School students returned this week with great enthusiasm and excitement for the year ahead. We welcomed Year 7 and a number of new students from Years 8 to 11 on Monday and they settled in well on Tuesday when the rest of the School commenced Term 1.

In our Assemblies on Tuesday I spoke about the opportunities that a fresh start affords at the commencement of a new academic year. I reflected on last year’s Secondary School Goal and shared the 2024 goal of establishing and maintaining consistently high expectations for personal growth. The students have a range of supportive structures and mechanisms in the School which means the staff can challenge them to be their very best.

Commitment to ensuring the highest expectations for students, across all aspects of their learning journey means supporting them with their relationship navigation with friends, teachers, coaches, self-management of time, emotions, punctuality, collaborative efforts in Sport, Music and other teams they may be a part of, and of course their academic pursuits.

I then moved to a focus on success and what this may look and feel like for each student, with examples from last year’s Year 12 cohort who were common in their articulation of what contributed to their success:

  • Strong relationships with key teachers
  • Challenging yourself
  • Knowing yourself as a learner – what works and how to be self-directed

School Captains Jasmine Black and Isaac Brooks shared details of their summer holiday experiences  with the students before encouraging them to set ambitious goals for the 2024 school year. Their 2024 motto Step Beyond is about taking that extra step, challenging yourself and encouraging others to challenge themselves. They implored students to try new things and to sit with the range of emotions which surface when placed in a situation of discomfort. They reminded students that it’s easy to go up to someone new and say hello, and challenged them to go beyond this superficial gesture to something even more meaningful – helping someone with school work, providing advice, in order to guide and support another. Making a personal action concrete and memorable can assist both the individual and the person receiving the support.

Excitedly, Jasmine and Isaac shared their motto’s image, which adorns the front cover of the 2024 Student Planner.

Literally, the cover shows a bubble exploding but the symbolism enables the real meaning to emerge. On the left side, is a student who is static, not pushing themselves, and in their comfort zone. On the other side, is a student bursting with colour, with life, with opportunity – a student who dared to dream big, who challenged themselves, who stepped beyond. Jasmine and Isaac look forward to their arrival of their Step Beyond badges and celebrating student success at their assemblies each Tuesday.

Next Tuesday we hold the Secondary School Swimming Carnival. Students need to be at school very early on Tuesday morning – before 7.15am. Students will be transported to Homebush and their departure locations are as follows:

  • Cowper – Junior School Oval
  • Dumolo – Dunnet Hall
  • McDouall – Parkes Hall Tennis Courts
  • Roseby – Senior Campus Top Terraces

Students who want race the 200m Individual Medley need to register with the Sports Department, and gather at school at 6:45am on the Senior Campus Top Terraces, in order to catch the early bus to Homebush.

Parents are welcome to attend. Student will be dismissed at the end of the day and may leave with parents who attend the Carnival, but not before the official Swimming Carnival has concluded.

A Lot Happened During the Holidays!

A large cohort of students from Years 8-10 were invited to participate in the UNSW GERRIC Gifted Students Program (10-12 January). To qualify for the program, students needed to show evidence of exceptional academic ability, achievement and critical thinking skills. Our students enjoyed delving into university-style seminars and advanced content pitched at two years above grade level with like-minded peers from schools across NSW. Dr Phoebe Poon (High Potential Learning Coordinator 7-12) caught up with students as they engaged in projects centred around cosmology, theories of relativity, myths about the lost city of Atlantis, neuroscience and the practice of logic and rational thinking. Thank you to Dr Poon and Ms Vyvian Kang who provided support to all students throughout the program. It’s fantastic to see so many of our students being recognised for their exceptional abilities and collaborating with each other.

Congratulations to Daisy Thomas who (Year 12) won Australia’s first ever Winter Youth Olympic Medal in Big Air Freestyle Skiing, claiming silver at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea.

Congratulations also go to Jasmine Black (Year 12) who was selected to play for Sydney FC over the holidays. Many other students worked hard throughout the holiday break across a range of pursuits and passions and we look forward to sharing these with you in coming weeks.

Class of 2023

Our diverse body of students goes onto to further study in a wide range of fields at universities around Australia and the world.

In New South Wales the most popular universities for our students are University of Sydney, UTS, Macquarie University and University of New South Wales. Popular interstate destinations include University of Melbourne and the Australian National University. In 2023 we had 24 students also apply to universities outside Australia including USA, UK, the Netherlands, Canada and Singapore.

We are pleased to share that 87% of our Class of 2023 students who received an offer via UAC (NSW university application system), received an offer for their first or second preference.

Engineering Summer School Reflection

Will Andrew, Conor Petersen, Frederick Yates and Aaron Beder attended Engineering Summer School over the break.

Reflection from Connor Petersen: The Engineering Summer School residential was held on the first week of the holidays. It was run by Engineers Australia and we stayed at the Sancta Sophia College at Sydney Uni for four nights. It was a great opportunity to understand what engineering is all about and the different streams of engineering. I met some great people, made long-lasting friendships, visited unis, experienced what it is like to be an engineer in the workplace, and was able to ask current uni students for advice. We visited five unis: USYD, UNSW, UTS, MQU and UoW and five workplaces: Rhode Island Navy Station, Bluescope Steel, Transurban/Westconnex, ANSTO nuclear facility and Cochlear. It was great fun and I would highly recommend the program to anyone who is thinking that engineering might be a career option. ‘

Reflection from Will Andrew: The summer school was really awesome; it was amazing to see all the engineering facilities both in universities and places of work. The week really helped me open my eyes to the things I could achieve with engineering and I can’t wait to learn more in the future.

Welcome Back to Yr 12 Graduating Class of 2024!

Happy New Year and welcome back to all students, parents and carers to a new and exciting last year of Secondary School for the 2024 cohort. I hope everyone had a restful break, time to rejuvenate with friends and family and time to prepare for the year ahead.

We welcome Mr Tony Callaghan to our Yr 12 Pastoral Team. He is joining the Cowper Blue team and will lead his Tutor Group through this year. Mr Callaghan is an HSC and IB Mathematics teacher and can often be found riding his bike to school in the mornings. We farewelled Mr Igor Srbinovski at the end of last year as he celebrated his wedding and moved back to Victoria.

This year, students will need to keep reality in check and watch out for one another. There are many exciting times ahead that are all balanced with many moments of anxiousness. With two days of Yr 12 underway, students have described the return as everything from “abrupt” and a “shock to the system” to “productive.” Countless students have already taken advantage of the Study Centre on Level 2, receiving support from teachers or finding a quiet space to study.

A huge congratulations to Daisy Thomas (Yr 12) who won Australia’s first ever Winter Youth Olympic medal in Big Air Freestyle Skiing, claiming silver at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. Daisy cleanly executed two of her three jumps to claim the silver medal with a combined score of 172.75, just 7.25 points behind the gold medallist from Italy. This exceptional achievement follows her success in the Ski Slopestyle final, where she placed 5th.

“I came here with the goal of getting on the podium, I’ve had the Youth Olympic medal on my phone’s home screen for over a year now, and to now have the medal in my hands feels so surreal!” Daisy said.

Please see the full article released here.

Will Andrew, Conor Petersen, Frederick Yates and Aaron Beder were also busy over the summer and attended Engineering Summer school following the end of Term 4.

Uniform Reminders

It has been a challenging week for some students ensuring their uniforms are in line with Redlands uniform guidelines, as outlined in the Student Planner, and in preparation for being a Yr 12 role model. A few ongoing uniform issues are listed below. While this is in the hands of our young adults, thank you in advance for checking in with your child to ensure they are wearing their uniform with pride.

  • Students are required to wear polished, black, laced, black-soled school shoes (not leather trainers)
  • Hems for dresses and skirts are to fall to top of knee
  • Hair is to be styled and tied up neatly, so that it is away from the eyes, ears and collar. Long hair is to be tied back with navy or hair coloured accessories.
  • Students wearing the dress or skirt are meant to wear ankle socks (not sport socks)

University and Careers Updates

All information regarding university applications and career options is advertised through the University and Careers Pulse Page. All Yr 12 are encouraged to ensure they have met with the Careers Advisors at least once by this point to discuss their Yr 12 Career Plan and life after Yr 12. Welcome to the start of the 2024 school year, with a special emphasis on our students beginning Yr 11. We’re excited about the journey ahead and committed to working alongside you to support your child’s learning and well-being as they step into this important phase of their education.

We’re here to discuss your child’s progress and help address any concerns that may arise. We also encourage you to share any achievements or successes your child experiences outside of school, as we believe in celebrating their milestones together.

We understand the importance of effective communication between parents and staff. While we aim to respond to emails and calls within 48 hours, please understand that our teachers juggle various responsibilities. Rest assured, your messages are important to us and will be addressed as promptly as possible.

Year 10

A Warm Welcome to 2024!

Welcome to Year 10 at Redlands, a significant step in your educational journey and a pivotal moment in setting the foundation for your senior studies. I trust that everyone had a wonderful break, took the opportunity to recharge and are now ready to dive into the new year with enthusiasm.

As we commence this journey together, we kindly ask for your help in keeping us updated on any changes in your contact details, address, or family circumstances, as well as any updates to your child’s medical history. Redlands Pulse, our Parent Portal, is the easiest way to provide this information, ensuring we have the most accurate details to support your child effectively.

A warm welcome is extended to the six new students joining our Year 10 cohort:

  • Kai Bellini
  • Sophia Koeroessy
  • Hamish Brumley
  • Ava Done
  • Sebastian Boross
  • Jessica Smith (returning student)

This term, we’ve planned a range of activities and events as part of our Pastoral Program, with a focus on assisting students as they transition into Year 10. These activities include Coaching Conversations (Week 3), Relationship Building, Careers Profiling and Leadership Development.

As we embrace the challenges and growth that come with Year 10, our dedicated team of teachers and Tutors are committed to holding consistently high expectations for personal development. Throughout the year, Mr Richard Millham (Assistant Year Advisor), your child’s Tutor and I will be available to assist you. We’re here to discuss your child’s progress and help address any concerns that may arise. We also encourage you to share any achievements or successes your child experiences outside of school, as we believe in celebrating their milestones together.

At our recent year assembly, I highlighted the importance of individual and cohort growth in Year 10. Students, both as individuals and collectively, have the opportunity to step beyond their comfort zones and challenge themselves to reach their full potential this year through a number of paths:

  1. RADS (Record of Academic Discussion): This acronym represents our commitment to holding students accountable and challenging them to meet high expectations for personal growth in the classroom. Students should see RADS as a positive part of their learning journey.

  2. Leadership: Year 10 presents a unique opportunity for students to lead by example, especially when it comes to influencing younger students. It’s not just about ticking off leadership activities; it’s about students stepping beyond their comfort zone and making a lasting impact.

  3. Service: We encourage students to move outside of their comfort zone to serve not only our school community but also the wider community. By doing so, students will gain valuable insights into empathy and teamwork.

  4. Purpose: I asked Year 10 students to consider their purpose. The Year 10 journey requires tenacity and a growth mindset. As course selection begins in Term 2, it’s crucial for students to engage with purpose and focus.

Additionally, students are encouraged to make connections with both new and old friends, and build relationships with their teachers. Helping your student to take ownership of their learning will form a key part of their success of a senior student. Please openly talk to your young person about actively engaging, asking questions, and embracing the opportunities for growth that Year 10 offers.

I am excited to witness the achievements and personal development that will unfold throughout this term and year ahead. Should you have any questions or require guidance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Wishing you a successful and fulfilling Year 10!

Year 9

Welcome Back

It was wonderful to welcome back our Year 9 students in full on Tuesday morning. There was a very positive atmosphere as students walked into Redlands Hall to hear Mr Corcoran, Ms Van De Peer and Ms Jansons reflect on the break and challenge students to bring their best selves, ready to learn each day for this academic year.

New Faces

This year we welcome one new Tutor to our team, Mr Ben Roets, who will be sharing leadership of McDouall Blue (9MB) with Ms Naoko Abe. We also welcome a new Assistant Year Advisor, Miss Meagan Barr, who is very excited to be working with us this year in our pastoral program. Miss Barr will also be teaching a Year 9 English class this year.

On Monday morning, Miss Barr and I also welcomed eight new students and their families to our cohort as well.

Key Expectations for the Year

As part of our Year Group Assembly on Tuesday morning I outlined a number of focal areas that we will be working with the year group on throughout the coming year. There were also several similar messages following on from the presenters in Redlands Hall. I emphasised high expectations and getting the ‘little things’ right to get the most out of our daily business of teaching and learning.

Student planners and documents on Pulse, such as the Student Code of Conduct comprehensively set out what is expected of students, and it is worth refreshing your knowledge of these. There are a few things that I specifically highlighted on Tuesday, as these are the building blocks for good habits.

These included:

  • Punctuality to class
  • Have all the required materials for each lesson
  • Bringing your best self to class (even on days when this can be difficult)
  • Courtesy and respect in interactions with Redlands staff and the wider community
  • Treating every RAD or formal conversation as feedback to grow from
  • Redlands has a ‘hands-off’ policy for everyone’s safety
  • Continuing the Look Up and Look Out mantra from last year students should be watching out for others when walking around in the community – we live in an area with lots of young families, parents with prams as well as retirement village next-door
  • Wearing the school uniform with pride

Upcoming Events

We have a number of events in the first part of the term which include:

  • Week 2 – Tuesday 6 February – Secondary School Swimming Carnival
  • Week 2 – Wednesday 7 February – Celebration of 2023 Academic Achievement & Growth Assembly
  • Week 2 – Thursday 8 February – Activities and Winter Sports Fair
  • Week 3 – Coaching Conversations
  • Week 3 – Thursday 15 February – ySafe Presentations and Parent Webinar
  • Week 8 – Musical Week

Year 8

Welcome Back to Redlands: Another Year Older, Another Year Wiser

Welcome back to Redlands for 2024! It has been an energetic week as students reconnected with peers and teachers, discovered who was in their new core classes and started engaging with their newly chosen electives. There was certainly a buzz of excitement around the campus.

As Yr 8 students now, the cohort have officially graduated from being the smallest fish in the pond and they have been encouraged to look out for the new Yr 7s and support them with any guidance or advice, as these students now navigate their first year in the Secondary School. Certainly, the Yr 8 cohort have been moving around this week with an assurance and confidence above and beyond what we saw this time last year.

In our opening Year Assembly on Tuesday, I challenged the cohort to reflect on their progress through 2023, considering their strengths and shortfalls and then looking towards what sort of journey they planned to undertake in 2024. A new year is a time to set new goals for their personal growth and Tutors will be unpacking aspirations with their tutees when our Coaching Conversations commence in Week 3. I also encouraged students to commit to looking outwards this year. As the Yr 7 cohort of 2023, much of their time was spent focused on their own selves, considering how they could fit into the School, what their passions would be and how they might personally succeed. As the Yr 8 cohort of 2024, we still want students to strive to achieve their best but we also want them to seek to bring others along with them on this journey. We will be promoting outward thinking this year, challenging students to think about their peers, teachers and others in the community, always looking to engage with them with respect, gratitude and compassion. I am really excited to see the continued growth our students will experience in 2024 and the heights to which they will soar!

New Staff and New Students to Year 8

I want to take this moment to welcome several new staff to our Yr 8 Pastoral team. Ms Veneta Bailey has joined Ms Christen Xue as a Tutor supporting Dumolo Red and Mr John Holden has taken over the role of Tutor for Roseby White. We know that both staff will be wonderful sources of support to our students. Additionally, Ms Vanessa Wang has moved into the role of Assistant Year Advisor for Yr 8 and she will be a wonderful source of support for the students and me as we travel through this year together.

I also want to warmly welcome six new students to the Yr 8 cohort:

  • Stella Aranchikov
  • Paige Barnett
  • Matteo Bellini
  • Zoe Clark
  • Jack Haggman
  • Deaana Tulsiani

We know that these students will thrive at Redlands and it is wonderful to see the cohort already embracing them and making them feel part of the school.

Getting the Little Things Right

Mrs Van de Peer loves to tell us how important it is ‘to get the little things right’ – and this is so important! The little things pave the way for the bigger and better; they are the foundation for our success. Three priority focuses we will be addressing consistently with our cohort this term are encouraging organisation through consistent and successful student planner use; building personal and community pride through maintaining neat and precise uniform standards; and fostering security, responsibility and management through effective locker use.

To this end, we are seeking the support of parents and carers in working with our Yr 8 Pastoral team to help students be the best they can be in getting the little things right. Please help us by:

  • signing student planners each Friday, to help keep students accountable to using these resources for organising their home learning and assessment planning. Tutors will be guiding students through best practice here and also checking student planners every fortnight on Wednesday, Week A.
  • being aware of the guidelines for the old and new uniforms, so that students can be assisted in maintaining strong standards. Uniform guidelines can be found in student planners and information on the new uniform can be accessed through Pulse. It is also important to note that students should now only be changing into PE uniform at the start of PE lessons or right before training. No students should be in classes in PE uniform, unless they are PE lessons. The exception to this is on Thursday Sport days.
  • encouraging your child/ren to keep locks on their lockers, so their possessions can be kept tidy, safe and secure. Tutors will also be assisting with students keeping lockers neat and organised. Some great student locker examples are pictured below!

As always, throughout the year, your child’s Tutor, Ms Wang, as Assistant Year Advisor and I, as Year Advisor, are available should you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress or are unsure of school procedures. Please reach out to us early so we can assist you and support your child. We also encourage you to share any achievements or successes your child experiences outside of school, as we really value celebrating such milestones together.

Good Luck on New Zealand Exchange!

Next week, three of our students – Anay, Emilia and Matilda – will be travelling to New Zealand to Kristin School in Auckland for three weeks of exchange. They will engage in schooling there and live with their exchange families for the duration. Later in March, they will then reciprocate, hosting their New Zealand students, taking them to their classes here and even bringing them on camp. We wish them all the best for a wonderful experience and amazing opportunity!

Student Success: Lauren Rolfe

I am pleased to report that during the last week of the recent school holidays, Lauren Rolfe represented NSW at Softball Australia’s U14 National Championships held in Canberra. On paper, the girls were not expected to come close to winning – they were definitely the underdogs. However, across five days of competition, they supported each other and played extremely well together as a team; so well, in fact, that they won the National Championships, in a nail-biting 7-6 victory! Congratulations to Lauren and her teammates!

On an important note too, Lauren’s success is a great example of the resilience, courage and tenacity we are seeking to instil in all our students. Lauren worked very hard to recover from several injuries prior to the tournament and ensure she could perform at her peak. Her efforts meant she was able to achieve the tournament goals she set for herself with her coaches and leave the tournament extremely satisfied with her involvement.

Year 7

We would like to welcome our Year 7 students to the exciting world of Secondary School. This marks the beginning of a journey filled with discovery, growth and countless opportunities. Rest assured that our dedicated team of teachers and staff are here to support your child every step of the way.

Secondary School is not only about academic development but also about students forming lasting friendships and exploring their unique potential. Your ongoing support and involvement are instrumental in making this transition a positive and enriching experience for your child.

Throughout the year, Mr Nick Walker (Assistant Year Advisor), your child’s Tutor and I will be available to assist you. We are here to discuss your child’s progress and help address any concerns that may arise.

Here’s to a fantastic start to this new chapter!

This Week’s Events

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful start our Year 7 students had during their initial transition days at Redlands. Monday was filled with activities aimed at fostering connections as students engaged in breaking the ice sessions in their core classes. Students received their timetables, planners and lockers, and had the chance to bond over some fun and energetic games with their Tutor groups.

On the second day, the focus shifted to digital organisation, classroom rules and expectations. Additionally, a Stage Assembly with our peers in Year 8 provided a valuable opportunity for our Year 7 students to familiarise themselves with the broader school community.

Shout Outs

In our Year 7 community, gratitude plays a significant role, and we want to express a heartfelt thank you to all the dedicated staff at Redlands who contributed to making the start of the year incredibly successful.

A huge shout out also goes to our Year 11 Peer Support Leaders who played a pivotal role in ensuring that our Year 7 students began their journey at Redlands in the best possible way.

Well done to Millicent Kroon and Owen Beck who contributed to our first ever Stage Assembly by reading our Acknowledgement to Country and Prayer. A fantastic start to the year!

Head of Junior School

It’s been really good to see Redlands Junior School students return this week with great enthusiasm and excitement for the year ahead. A special mention to students who are new to the School who have taken on the change to their school environment in their stride. In our Assembly this week I spoke about our obligation as a school community to welcome new students, staff and families. We spoke about three ways of doing this at school: by greeting a new student with a warm hello and by showing genuine interest in them, through an invitation into friendship groups and playground games, and by helping in class or around the School when new students are uncertain or unsure. As expected, our students have been superb in responding to these prompts.

On Thursday 8 February there will be an opportunity for parents to meet their children’s class teachers at the Meet the Teacher sessions. These will take place in you child’s classroom with Year 3-4 starting at 5:00pm–5:45pm and Year 5-6 at 6:00pm–6:45pm. The purpose of the meeting is for class teachers to familiarise you with their teaching approach, routines and expectations so that you can work together to best support your child’s learning.

Some of you might have noticed that in the 2024 books/resources pack that is charged to parents, we have removed many of the stationery items from the pack. The decision was made to reduce both the cost to parents as well as unnecessary waste as many of the items were automatically repeated from one year to the next. As such, this year the School has provided many of those stationery items. However, we request that from Week 3, students bring in a basic pencil case with core items. The teachers will elaborate further during the Meet the Teacher session.

Thank you for your support of the Redlands school uniform requirements. All students, whether they are wearing the new uniform or old summer uniform, have started the year looking smart and well presented. A quick reminder that we are transitioning to the new SunSmart hat to replace the old cap and this will be compulsory from 4 March.

Finally, thank you for the warm welcome you have extended to me over the last few days. I have enjoyed meeting many of you in person at the school gates and look forward to seeing you at the Twilight in the Garden parent welcome evening on Friday 16 February.

Uniform Shop

Term 1 Opening Hours

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8am – 4pm, Thursdays 8am – 6pm.

New Uniform Fittings

All students must be fitted into the new uniform as sizing is different and there are various options available to purchase. Parents may bring their children to the shop during our opening hours to have a uniform fitting.  Appointments are not required during term time.

The new uniform will not available to purchase through Flexischools until mid-2024.

A few reminders for transitioning into the new Redlands uniform:

  • There will be a two year transition period.  All students should be in the new uniform from Term 1, 2026.
  • During this transition period, students can to choose wear either the new uniform or the old uniform.  They cannot mix elements of old and new uniforms.
  • The only exception to this is the blazer.  Junior and Secondary School students are permitted to wear the new blazer with their old uniform or their old blazer with the new uniform.

Redlands SunSmart Hat

The new SunSmart hat is available to purchase online through Flexischools under Accessories in various sizes.

Head of Preparatory School

It’s Great to be Back!

A very warm welcome back to the Preparatory School community. To our returning staff and students, great to see you again and to our new friends, I hope that the first few days have been calm and full of fun. Hearing children playing, laughing, and exploring their new classrooms has brought us all a lot of joy this week.  As Dr Seuss suggests, we are all very excited to get going and jump into 2024.

Can I encourage everyone to read the Preparatory School 2024 Welcome Letter. All information regarding new staff, key staff contacts, term dates and key Term 1 events are included. It would be helpful to also familiarise yourself with the Preparatory School Pulse home page as direct links to all cocurricular pages and the school calendar can be found here as well key school policies.

Our Facilities department have been working hard over the holidays to keep our school looking great. The Peter Cornish upgrades continue and are still on track for a mid-term completion. During the holidays, local Council cut down two trees outside Prep Reception, can I please ask families to be aware of the tree stumps that have been left behind when walking in and out of Reception.

I know that starting a new school for children and their parents can at time can overwhelming and the novelty of the ‘new’ can wear off quite quickly as first week tiredness and information overload kicks in. If this sounds familiar, please reach out to me, Ms Pontes at Prep Reception, or your classroom teacher.

Meet the Teacher

Keep in mind that Prep Meet the Teacher Evening (Wed 7 Feb, 5pm-6pm) will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and to hear about what exciting experiences and opportunities are planned for your child this year. Your child’s Meet the Teacher evening will be held in your year group classes. Please note that this is a parent only event, there is no supervision of children during the evening.

As we start the year, I have included some key answers to questions that often come up in the first few days of a new school year in the Preparatory School. I hope you find this helpful.

Playground

  • Yes, parents can stay and chat with other parents at drop off, but we do ask that your conversations are taken off campus when the 8.20am bell rings.
  • We love to capture key moments at school, but we do ask that no photos or videos are taken in the playground or classrooms of other children please.
  • To help build resilience and for staff to establish classroom routines early, please say goodbye in the playground after dropping off. There are many staff around who can lend a hand if needed. Pop a note in the Student Diary if you need to get a message to your teacher.
  • A SunSmart bucket hat MUST be worn every day. This year we have no spares, so a child without a hat will be asked to sit and play in the shade until a new hat is bought or the old one found.

Toilets

  • Parents are asked not to use or enter student toilets on the Junior Campus under any circumstances. Your child can use the bathrooms by themselves if needed in the mornings. If an adult does need to use the bathroom, please use the ‘all access‘ toilet found on the left as you enter the Prep playground.

Parent Helpers

  • Yes, we will be putting the call out for parent helpers later this term for a Term 2 start. However, if you would like to help Mrs Roberts in the Library, please contact her directly.
  • Parent class representatives are so very important to us. If you would like to volunteer for this, please talk to Jenny Krallis or Jenny Harris as soon as possible!

Uniform, Bags and Lunches

  • Any jewellery or hair accessories that are not part of the Redlands uniform will be removed and sent home in your child’s bag for safe keeping.
  • Please choose ONE ITEM that your child can use to identify their bag. For example, a keyring, ribbon etc. Too many keyrings can cause little people to topple over.
  • Please be mindful of lunchbox sizes, big lunchboxes are often too heavy and our learners find it hard to put them away!
  • For those parents who access Flexischools, please update your child’s class details as soon as possible please.

General

  • Please enjoy the journey of early years learning. Every child shines at different times and at Redlands we celebrate the process along the way.
  • Our little learners will get tired! Please consider this when scheduling after school activities. Have a chat with your classroom teacher if you are unsure.

How we Celebrate Birthdays in the Prep School

A big thank you to Sonia Haque for making our new birthday capes for the Prep students. We have already celebrated a few birthdays and to see the colourful new capes is so exciting!

We celebrate birthdays in Prep by wearing a birthday cape, choosing a birthday pencil and sticker, it is always a very exciting day and our little friends are very spoilt by everyone. With that said, can I please remind families that cakes, lollies and birthday party invitations are not to be brought into school please. Thank you for your understanding and supporting the Prep staff with this.

From the Lucy Hill Library

A message from Mrs Roberts

Once again, the Lucy Hill Library is open for parent borrowing. Please come and borrow books to supplement your bedtime reading routines. It is always good to have something new to read. You may borrow ten books and one toy at a time. The library will be open for parents three days a week in the mornings and afternoons.

  • Monday 8-8.30am and 3-3.30pm.
  • Tuesday 8-8.30am and 2.30-3.30pm.  (This longer afternoon allows Preschool parents to come to the library after pickup.)
  • Thursday 8-8.30am and 3-3.30pm

Please note that the Library will not be open or staffed for parents on Wednesday.

Please keep an eye out for our term newsletter that will have further details around events and the 2024 NSW Premiers Reading Challenge information.

Redlands House and PreKindergarten

Welcome!

What a fabulous first few days we have had in Redlands House and PreKindergarten to start the year! We warmly welcome all new and returning families to our environment, and look forward to embarking on a wonderful year of fun and learning together.

Parent Information Session:

An information session will take place for new Redlands House families in Week 2. As this session is for parents to listen and participate in the presentation from the Redlands House teachers. It will allow you to get to know the staff and your class teachers a little better.

Redlands House            Tuesday  6 February   5pm – 5.30pm  – in Classrooms

PreKindergarten            Wednesday 7 February  5pm – 5.30pm  – in Pre-K Classroom

Chinese New Year Celebrations

We would love families to join us for a celebration for Chinese New Year on Wednesday 14 February, from 9.30am to 10.30am.  Families are invited to join us for this wonderful cultural event, which will have a variety of activities and experiences in the in Redlands House playground. If you have an activity or experience you would like to share, please reach out and let Mrs Huon know

Parking

Parking around the school can be problematic, especially around pick up time. To ease congestion and ensure the safety of our students, the Prep School use a carline that enable parents to collect their children from the underground carpark from 2.45pm each day. We therefore ask Redlands House families to refrain from parking in the 5 minutes parking zone outside the preschool from 2.30pm onwards. Families are still able to park for 5 minutes out the front of Redlands House until 2.30pm.

Birthdays

The Preschool staff love to celebrate the children’s birthdays each year. The children love to celebrate their birthday too – it’s a great conversation topic all year round!  We have many children in the preschool with food allergies, so we are not permitting cakes or any type of food in the preschool for birthday celebrations. Please be assured we will celebrate their special day in a variety of ways.

Hockey

Congratulations to our 3 Redlands students who recently competed for NSW at the U18 Indoor Hockey National Championships, with significant  success. The tournament was held in Canberra from January 12-16.

Eloise Trueman (Hockey Captain 2023)  played with the NSW State team, who won the gold medal and are National Champions.

Jess Van Extel (Hockey Captain 2024) and Megan Kirkpatrick (Year 11) competed with the NSW Blues team, who came fourth.

Underwater Hockey

Congratulations to Buddy Miller’s achievements in Underwater Hockey last year!

Last December, Buddy was selected to represent NSW in the NSW Under 15s Underwater Hockey team for the National championship in Cairns in April 2024.

In May 2023 Buddy was selected for inclusion in the larger NSW Under 15s Underwater Hockey development squad. As a part of the state development squad, Buddy attended a tri-state development camp at Geelong Grammar School in Geelong, Victoria in August, along with representative players from Victoria and South Australia. Buddy also represented Sydney at the NSW State Titles in Newcastle on November 4 2023 in the junior division, winning a bronze medal.

A letter from the president of NSW Underwater Hockey was addressed to Mr Corcoran, our Principal, highlighting Buddy’s great contribution to the sport.

Rowing

During the recent summer holidays a significant number of students within the Rowing program took up the option to continue their training both on water and land leading into the recent Rowing camps. Our senior rowers attended a 6 day camp in Berry while the Juniors had a Sydney based 4 day camp. Students initially completed crew selections for the upcoming regattas. Students then trained very hard within their crews working on their skills and technique, alongside gaining more boat speed.

This weekend will see a number of our Senior and Year 9 girls crews compete at the Kings/PLC regatta while the rest of the students will have training based at Mosman Rowing Club.

All training information including detailed schedules is available on Pulse and has been emailed to families.

Absences and Running Late to Morning Training

As always, students and families are requested to send any absences or running late notices for morning water sessions to me via email or text message.

We will be facilitating retrials/challenges during Thursday training in the lead up to the start of competition so please make sure you reach out to myself or Stuart (Grand Slam Tennis) if you are interested in this. We will be finalising teams and releasing the playing roster and squad sessions mid-Week 2.

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2023 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather.
  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Junior Sport

We extend our warmest welcome to all families and students as we embark on what promises to be an exhilarating year for sports in the Junior School. A special greeting goes out to those families who are joining the Redlands community in 2024. We trust that you and your families had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year break.

Last week, every Junior School family would have received a comprehensive communication outlining the upcoming term’s plans for both Representative and Non-Representative Sports. We kindly request that you make this communication your primary point of reference for any inquiries over the next 11 weeks, as it contains valuable information and links to facilitate your understanding and participation. Additionally, within this communication, you would have found a secondary document that serves as a reminder of our established guidelines, which are in place to ensure the smooth management of all visitors to our campus during sporting events. Your diligent review of this document, coupled with your adherence and support of these guidelines, is greatly appreciated.

It is indeed a privilege and a source of pride for us to be able to host our community, as well as visiting school communities, on our Junior Campus for a significant number of our home sporting fixtures. As we approach the commencement of our Summer Sports fixtures next week we kindly remind all stakeholders of the importance of adhering to the established guidelines that govern the management of all visitors to our campus on Saturdays, both before, during, and after matches.

We look forward to an exciting and successful year of sporting endeavours and appreciate your cooperation in upholding the standards of our community.

These guidelines are as follows:

  • Entry and exit to the school oval for Football matches is via the oval gate on Murdoch St. There is no access to the school via any entrance from Allister St.
  • Parking in surrounding streets should not impact our neighbours’ properties. Please do not park across driveways and keep noise to a minimum if you are arriving for one of the first matches.
  • There are no dogs/pets permitted onsite on any school grounds.
  • Playground equipment and climbing frames are not to be used on Saturday mornings per the signage.
  • When you arrive onsite, please move to the Piazza which is designated for spectators. Rest room facilities are also located on this side of the campus.
  • The playing surface is reserved for the players, coaching staff, medical staff and referees only.
  • During Football season the area adjacent to the basketball hoops is reserved for the two arriving teams to warm up. Your respect and support of these guidelines are appreciated. Looking ahead to Summer Sport when we commence Basketball and will host home matches in Dunnet Hall or on Redlands House Courts, please note the guidelines below that are in place on match days.
  • Entry to Dunnet Hall and or Redlands House Courts for Basketball is via Allister St only.
  • Please consider our neighbours when entering and exiting Dunnet Hall by not bouncing basketballs outside on the path and not parking across private property, double parking, etc.
  • There are no spectators permitted inside Redlands House courts due to the run-off areas and court boundary lines being in close proximity to each other. Spectators may view the matches from the boundary fence on Allister St.
  • Spectators inside Dunnet Hall may sit on the ‘spectator side’ of the court, which is on the side of the court closest to the foyer. The opposite side of the hall is reserved only for players, coaching staff and scorers.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our parent portal, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse

The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport inability to train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

New Dance Teachers

We would like to introduce you to our amazing new team members for 2024.

Sophie Holloway

Redlands Dance Academy are thrilled to welcome Sophie Holloway to our dance faculty. Sophie will be teaching Senior Jazz classes and Performance Groups on Thursday afternoons. This is an extraordinary chance for our students to work with the most highly sought after Jazz dancer/ teacher in Australia.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Sophie Holloway began dancing at the early age of 3 years old. She trained with industry legend Bernadette Langshaw-Clark and attended Newtown High School of the Performing Arts where she completed her Higher School Certificate majoring in Dance and Drama. Sophie hit the Australian scene at just age 16 as a commercial dancer and model, featuring in TVC’s and television programs, before landing a coveted role in the ensemble of performers in Baz Lurhmann’s film The Great Gatsby.

After gaining treasured life experience travelling overseas and working as a featured dancer for Carnival Cruise Lines, Sophie chased her ultimate dream, making her way to New York City in 2014. Here, she endured the annual “cattle call” audition for the internationally renowned precision dance company The Radio City Rockettes and successfully secured a contract on her first attempt. Her 8 years with the company have included over 800 performances at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall, as well as countless appearances on the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Today Show NBC, Michael Buble’s Christmas In New York special, the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and more!

In 2017 Sophie ticked off a bucket list opportunity where she was selected to dance with The Rockettes at the 71st Annual Tony Awards.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

We have secured 40 tickets for the Australian Ballet’s dress rehearsal of Christopher Wheeldon’s extravagant Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at the capitol theatre on Monday 19 February at 7pm. Masterfully translated from Lewis Carroll’s beloved book, Wheeldon brings the humour and eccentricities of the original story to the ballet stage in a fantastical tale. Watch as The Queen of Hearts rampages around her court, the White Rabbit shimmies his tail and the Caterpillar sparkles in 16 crystal-covered pointe shoes.

Young Belvoir Theatre Club

Halcyon Hunt, our 2024 Redlands Arts Captain has recently applied for and been accepted into the Young Belvoir Theatre Club, one of Australia’s most distinguished and beloved theatre companies. The club is an opportunity to meet like-minded peers and learn more about how theatre is made. The experience includes: attending performances, enriched by the conversations created around our work; either with other club members, family and friends and even with some Belvoir professional performance artists themselves in pre-show talks.

Members also attend Belvoir productions as an audience member with club peers and are also invited to participate in workshops and activities throughout the year.

Halcyon has been involved in theatre making and productions her whole life, inside Redlands and externally, as well as going to a number of workshops with Belvoir and other Theatre companies such as NIDA. She has also just finished her professional training in AMTA: professional musical theatre training course which she has been participating in every Sunday for the last two terms.

Last year Redlands was thrilled to have two students who also were accepted into the membership of Young Belvoir’s Theatre Club, Charlotte Waterland and Marcus Cooper-Hor. Charlotte speaks very highly (and I might add articulately) of the theatre she viewed, and the incredible experiences she participated in. She is using many of the concepts and ideas to form the basis of her approach to many of her IB Theatre task, whilst Marcus has extended this into his skills in production.

LeCoq Workshops Hone Skills and Build Links to Exciting Theatrical Engagement

On 1 Feb, the Yr 11 & 12 HSC Drama and Yr 11 & 12 IB Theatre cohorts got to attend a range of workshops showcasing the theories and work practice of Jaques LeCoq. These workshops were led by Kate Walder. Kate is a wonderful physical theatre director, performer, movement director and writer. Since graduating from Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris, she has worked across a range of theatrical contexts but focussed primarily on the creation of new works across Australia and internationally. Students eagerly participated using a range of techniques and explored the concepts that are at the heart of all movement and theatre making. These included: Rhythm, Fixed point, Tension, Tempo, Architecture of space with consideration of scale, axes, composition and layering. Students are now excited to apply and experiment with these new performance experiences in their Collaborative Projects and devising.
