Good Bye and Good Luck!

I had the pleasure of attending a range of end of season Sport functions over the previous weeks and it is always a great opportunity to reflect on the season gone and review our programs moving forward. One notable difference with the end of the Winter Sport season is that it signifies the final time Yr 12 students are recognised by their peers for their contribution to school sport, what they have completed and what they have gained from their involvement in Sport at Redlands. As we say farewell to Yr 12s this week, I would like to encourage them all to continue to be involved in sport in a competitive manner after their time at school. Whilst any form of physical activity is beneficial for the mind and the body, competitive sport offers different and far greater benefits than basic physical fitness activities. Competitive sport in all its forms is one of our greatest teachers in life. It is self-directed, intrinsically motivated, team based and most of all fun. Yet, sport within Australia faces some significant challenges both now and the future. The influence of technology, diminishing volunteer bases, reduced public funding and rising competition from fitness and leisure pursuits are just a few. Last year Aus Play (ASC, 2017) participation data revealed that involvement in competitive sport has diminished by 27% since 2001 with only 1 in 5 people over the age of 14 participating in competitive sport.

Soccer and Rowing (both Redlands Sports) are interestingly two of the only top 27 sports that has showed a significant increase of participants, 46% and 64% respectively. It is the more common and growing leisure pursuits of walking, swimming, cycling and yoga that have shifted the participation numbers. Whilst women’s sport has seen recent increases in funding and pay for professional women athletes, these statistics are relevant to both genders. It is in this regard that we must acknowledge that we still have a long way to go in the promotion of women in sport in Australian society.

I encourage all of our departing Year 12 students to continue to engage with sport after school and not just by spectating but also playing and competing. Whether it is a university team, local club or representative pathway, I guarantee that taking part in competitive sport will return huge benefits to the lives you lead. I would hope that the same way students have built friendships and learnt lifelong lessons in school sport, they continue to receive this and more beyond our school gates.

I leave you with the parting words of Michael Jordan in an interview when he retired from professional Basketball “Just play. Have Fun. Enjoy the Game!”.

Athletics

We will be having the ISA and NSWCIS Athletics photos on Friday 21 September after lunch. Students are reminded that they need to bring to school their full Redlands Sports tracksuit, Redlands athletic singlet or Redlands sports polo.

Football

Thank you to all players and parents who attended the Football dinner. Congratulations to our award winners from the season.
