Issue 29 2018 - 20 Sep 2018

From the Principal

What a wonderful community celebration last weekend with the Redlands Spring Fair! I was delighted to join around 3000 students, parents, staff and neighbours to enjoy the carnival fun and entertainment on a beautiful spring day. I sincerely thank all of the parent, staff and alumni volunteers for their exceptional contribution and efforts in making the Fair such a successful and enjoyable day for the whole community, and pay special tribute to Trudy Waterfield and Jean Martin, the Fair’s co-convenors, and their organising team members, who have worked tirelessly over the past months on this event. I thank our Spring Fair major sponsors Croll Real Estate, Ski Japan and GM Photographics and stall sponsors Chemist Warehouse Neutral Bay, Orangetheory Fitness Mosman and Nespresso for their very much appreciated support. I also acknowledge our internal teams for their work before, during and after the Fair: Foundation, Alumni, Facilities, Canteen, AV, Archives, Marketing and Finance; and the following teams for organising the splendid entertainment: Dance, Music, Drama and Innovative Design. Finally, I recognise the exceptional efforts of Director of Development Dana Casimaty, Deputy Principal Sarah McGarry, Head of Junior School Ari Guha and Head of Early Childhood Audrey Fellowes, who worked in conjunction with the Spring Fair organising team to ensure the success of the day. Due to everyone’s hard work and support, over $60,000 was raised from the Spring Fair and will be put towards outdoor equipment on both the Junior and Senior Campuses.

Last night our 2018 Captains attended the September Board meeting and reflected upon the year, the achievements of all those who have led in many roles and areas during the past year, and expressed their thoughts on what they consider is very special about Redlands. The thoughtful and articulate manner in which they spoke and their honest and respectful answers to questions from Directors greatly impressed us all. They spoke from the heart about the preparation for adult life which Redlands offers through a coeducational environment, the interconnected culture which spreads across the Year Groups, a well-balanced curriculum with many options, both academic and cocurricular, through which they could explore and discover their passions and talents, and the pastoral care which offered them a variety of staff members to whom they could turn for support and help.

With next week being the final week of Term 3, there will be much happening as we celebrate the final days of school for our graduating Year 12 students. Their last day of school will be on Wednesday and will conclude with their Prize Giving and Valedictory Dinner. Our new School Leaders for 2019 will be announced at the final assembly on Friday week.

This will be my final Note Day for the term, as I shall be visiting High Country Campus on Thursday and Friday to attend the Official Opening of Building 4, which has been restored to operational use as a recreation space for students, and following that the annual end of Winter School dinner. The building has been in use this winter season and has provided a fine addition to the facilities there, thanks to the very generous support of Mark and Tracey van Weelde who are great supporters of Redlands and of the HCC program. The building will be named for them in recognition of their support.

I wish all families a restful break over the school holiday period and look forward to welcoming students back to school at the start of next term.

Dr Peter Lennox

BIG Thank You to the Redlands Community and our Sponsors

What a great celebration of Redlands community! It was wonderful to see so many students, parents, staff, alumni and members of our local community enjoying this event on Saturday which has been held every two years since 1899. The Fair welcomed about 3,000 visitors and made in excess of $60,000. These proceeds will be dedicated towards the outdoor equipment across both campuses.

Trudy Waterfield (RPFA Vice President) and Jean Martin, the Fair’s co-convenors, did a sterling job in coordinating the whole event. They were supported by the terrifically dedicated and hardworking team of Felicity Gates, Maria Kinsela, Kristina Green, Laura Briggs and Fiona Mears, as well as all the parents who assisted with coordinating various aspects of the Fair.

The new initiatives such as the Redlands Alumni Café organised by our Redlands Alumni parents, Natalie Davies, Justine Scali and Annie Flynn, contributed greatly to the fantastic community spirit.

“The variety of stalls, international food and entertainment for children, parents and the broader community were very impressive”. Redlands parents

Redlands Spring Fair

Over 3,000 people from the School community and local area came out to enjoy the festivities and sunshine at our Redlands Spring Fair last Saturday 15 September.

The Redlands Spring Fair was in full bloom and the positive energy and goodwill was felt by all throughout the day.  The carnival fun was evident when looking at the happy smiling faces of our children as they raced with their friends from one ride to the next.

The Fair is a major social opportunity for Redlands families during the year and it was a wonderful spring day to catch up and chat with friends.

A Big Thank You!

A full school event like the Spring Fair doesn’t happen without a generosity of spirit and a significant contribution of those in our School community that freely give of their time and energy.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who cheerfully and enthusiastically participated not only on the day but leading up to and in preparation of this event. It was lovely to see parents, students, alumni and staff all pulling together and contributing to the success of the day. Events like Spring Fair wouldn’t be the same without our wonderful volunteers.

The feedback has been truly amazing by all in the community and I will treasure the beautiful memories.

The fair is expecting to raise $60,000 in surplus revenues which will go directly towards outdoor equipment on both the Junior and Senior Campuses.

Spirit Week

This week is Spirit Week where our Yr 12 student leaders organise a variety of activities to celebrate our School Spirit in the Arts, Sports and through the Houses. Yesterday, Spirit Week kicked off with a celebration of School Spirit through the Arts with Yr 12 bands Rockin the Quad at lunchtime and many other Yr 12 students painting a mural on the hoarding outside of the cafeteria. Today we celebrate our School Spirit through sports with a Rowing Erg challenge and a staff v students Basketball game. On Friday, we celebrate our School Spirit through the Houses with our final Prefect Assembly with this group of Yr 12 leaders and a House dance battle in the Quad. Friday is also a mufti day where students can where their House colours on the day.

School Spirit is a valued and important aspect of any school community and I am pleased to see it celebrated in so many different facets at Redlands. School Spirit is also not something which can be “forced” or “mandated”. It is a sense of pride, affiliation and connectedness that all people in the school community feel through the many relationships, experiences and activities which occur at school and it is wonderful to see it flourishing at Redlands.

Blackmores Run

On Sunday morning, Mr Castelli, Mr Gray and I joined 85 students in participating in the Sydney Running Festival 10km run. This Yr 12 initiative was a way for them to raise awareness for mental health and money for headspace, an organisation dedicated to helping young people who struggle with mental illness. It was wonderful and moving to see so many Yr 12 students (as well as some Yr 11 students) wearing lots of pink and coming together as a community. While there were a few sore legs on Monday, I am certain that all of us involved in this event will remember it as a truly special day. I would like to especially thank Emma Woodward who has led this initiative over the past few months and all of the parents who donated money to support this worthy cause.

Year 12s

The banner for the Yr 12s is up in the Liggins courtyard counting down their final days at School. (While the IB students will return for a week at the beginning of next term as their final examinations are later than the HSC Examinations, we will officially celebrate the commencement of Yr 12 with their Prize Giving and Valedictory evening next Wednesday.) It is an exciting and emotional time for our senior students as one stage of their life’s journey comes to a close and another one is about to begin. Personally, I have greatly enjoyed seeing this group of Yr 12 students mature and flourish over my first two years at Redlands as they have been exemplary leaders for our school community this year. I hope all of them are able to balance their continued preparation for their final examinations with a sense of joy and appreciation of the many events planned for them over the next week to wish them a fond farewell.

Year 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition

Last night was the official opening of the Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition in Redlands Hall. The exhibition showcases not only the talents, but also the effort, dedication and discipline of our Yr 12 IB Visual Arts students who have produced works of such a high quality. Personally, I was most impressed with the deep thoughtfulness behind each piece of work and appreciated the “guided tour” that some of the students were able to give me of their works. A special thank you to the staff and parents who have supported these Visual Arts students on this journey and who must have been so proud to see their finished products on display last night.

Spring Fair

It was wonderful to see so many staff, students and parents from the Secondary School community out enjoying the warm weather and the many activities at the Spring Fair on Saturday. The day illustrated to me once again the strength of our Redlands community. The day would not have been possible without the efforts of so many parents and staff who volunteered their time and effort to make the day such a success. While there are too many staff and parents to thank, I would like to extend a special acknowledgement to the Spring Fair co-convenors, Trudy Waterfield and Jean Martin, who have been organising this event for months and expertly led the huge team of volunteers on the day.

Canteen: Tap and Go

This week the Secondary School Canteen has installed two “Tap and Go” machines which will allow students to use cards and not cash in purchasing items from the Canteen. While cash will still be accepted in the Canteen, we hope this provision will make purchasing easier for some families.

Special Provisions Volunteers

The Learning Plus department is looking for new members to add to our friendly team of volunteers who assist Redlands students in Yrs 7-12 with special provisions for exams and assessments throughout the year. We welcome Prep, Junior and Secondary School parents, grandparents, friends and Redlanders. Our volunteers respect confidentiality, are reliable, punctual, patient and friendly. Legible handwriting is a bonus. If this describes you, please come and join our team. You can choose the exams and assessments for the subjects and years in which you are interested to suit your schedule.

No subject specific knowledge is required; you are simply there to read and/or write what the student dictates, and to regulate the time. Bad spelling? No problem – spelling is ignored when there’s a writer. Illegible handwriting? You could be a reader (no writing required) or supervise time for a student or a small group. With your help a student can achieve his or her potential, and you will gain an additional perspective of Redlands. Our students are very appreciative of the support they are given.

Our next information session and morning tea will be held early in Term 4. If you would be interested in finding out more about helping with exams, please email Saralie Pincini or phone 9968 9854.

RPFA AGM and Volunteer Thank You

Volunteering at Redlands is greatly appreciated and it is a vital component of the Culture of Giving at Redlands. We believe that every member of our community can contribute to the School, its development and growth by volunteering their time, supporting us through their gifts or making a financial donation. Please see the RPFA page in this Note Day for further details.

Service

Last weekend so many Redlands students were actively involved in supporting community activities both at school and in the wider community.

The Redlands Spring Fair was a wonderful success and there were several teams of Yr 11 students who independently ran stalls in addition to the many parent led stalls and activities. It was wonderful to see so many students engaging in the life of the school.

On Sunday, Yr 12 students led the school in undertaking the Blackmores 10km Bridge run to raise funds for Headspace. This was a student initiated and led activity started by Emma Woodward, that was emotionally important to the Yr 12 cohort. It was wonderful to see them come together and make a significant contribution.

Year 12

Mental Health Run

Thank you to Emma Woodward for organising and managing our Redlands team of over 50 students who took part in the Blackmore’s Bridge Run. There was a great sense of camaraderie as we adorned our bright pink team colours and ran across Sydney Harbour Bridge together. Thank you also to Mr Gray and Mr Corcoran for joining us and clocking very impressive times. It was a proud moment when the commentator on a loud speaker asked the students which school they were from and which Year Group they were in. When they said ‘Year 12’ he looked shocked and asked ‘but don’t you have your exams coming up?’ One student replied ‘Yes, but this is important to us.’ The commentator then said ‘well I bet your Head of School isn’t here’ to which they all pointed to Mr Corcoran limbering up for the 10km run. A great Redlands moment.

Yr 10 Talk

Thank you Tim Goerner, Elizabeth Smith and Liam Woolsey for giving up their time to talk with Yr 10 about respect and support. Their personal stories and ability to gain traction with Yr 10 students who are discovering their own identities and sense of efficacy was very much appreciated.

Class of 2018

To see our Year Group finish their final days of school with the same level of class they’ve shown throughout their time here has been an absolute privilege. Right up to the end, they have continued to volunteer, assist and support our community. It has been wonderful to see them take time each day to film a funny moment, have a laugh and pull together for one last charity drive. They truly are the ‘class’ of 2018.

Winter School

This week, our Assistant Year Advisor Mr Nick Walker is visiting our Yr 9 students at Winter School. Here is a photograph of our Yr 9 students at work.

ISA Athletics

On Tuesday 11 September, Redlands attended the ISA Athletics at Sydney Olympic Park. Redlands had a most successful day, with our best track and field athletes keenly competing. The Division 1 team was led by the Athletics Captains, Anna Jackson and John Economides, along with a great team of coaches from Mosman Athletics Club, who worked closely with the team on the day of the Carnival. The entire team brought an incredible amount of team spirit to the Carnival with every athlete cheering track side and competing in their respective events to the best of their ability.

Intermediate Middle Distance runner, Emma Mahon (Yr 9), fresh from her run at the Australian Junior XC Championships, had strong wins in the Intermediate Girls 3000m, Intermediate Girls 1500m and the U15 Girls 800m. Emma dominated her field in all three races, proving her strength and endurance. The Intermediate girls relay of Alex York (Yr 10), Phoebe Rathbone (Yr 10), LuLu Simpson (Yr 10), Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) had perfect changes, to have an exciting finish in 1st place. Sophia Justice (Yr 9) placed 2nd in the Girls 14 years High Jump. Liberty Jacob (Yr 9) placed 2nd in the 15 years Discus and Javelin. A special congratulations to Samuel Harrap, Junior Boy Athlete of the Year, and Jonah Koppers Intermediate Boy Athlete of the Year.

Youth Leading the World (YLTW)

Students in Yr 9 are invited to participate in the Youth Leading the World,  OzGREEN’s inspiring annual youth sustainability congress on 26 and 27 November. This year the North Sydney congress will be part of a global YLTW focus week and connect with other congresses in Asia and the Americas.

Now in its sixth year at North Sydney, non-profit organisation  OzGREEN runs the congress in cooperation with North Sydney Council. The congress aims to inform and inspire high school students to actively work on making their families, schools and communities more sustainable. Students will engage in all 4Cs – Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication. YLTW provides an opportunity for students to step up and show leadership on issues they are passionate about.

  • 2 day Congress: 26 and 27 November, 9.00am – 3.30pm;
and Community Forum (one week later): 3 December, 6.00-8.00pm
  • Location: The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability, Waverton
  • Some congress hours and ongoing work on resulting project can count towards volunteering requirements for Duke of Ed.

Students seeking more information on this event should email Ms Shorter and express their interest in participating.

Achievements

The Redlands Track and Field team has had their most successful ISA results ever. On Tuesday 11 September, Redlands athletes competed at the ISA Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. The Division 1 team was led by the Athletics Captains, Anna Jackson and John Economides, along with a great team of coaches from Mosman Athletics Club, who worked closely with the team on the day of the Carnival. The entire team bought an incredible amount of team spirit to the Carnival with every athlete cheering track side and competing in their events to the best of their ability.

Some of the most memorable track and field moments achieved by the Yr 8 team on the day in both Track and Field events include:

Junior Middle Distance runner, Olivia Vigneault, transferred her energetic, and positive energy onto the track with dominating wins in the U14 Girls 3000m, Intermediate Girls 1500m and the U15 Girls 800m. She won all three races with a smile on her face.

Junior lightning sprinter, Emmi Mcdonald, won the U13 Girls 100m (Div 1 A) and the U13 Girls 200m (Div 1 A), and also came away with a silver in the 13 years Long Jump.

Junior sprint sensation, Lauren Smith, proved her speed on the track with wins in the U13 Girls 100m (Div 1 B), 200m (Div 1 B) and the U13 Girls 400m.

In the relays, our Junior Girls relay (Emmi Mcdonald, Lauren Smith, Liv Stonley and Ruby Kelly) had a brilliant run, storming home in 1st place.

Rex Brook placed 2nd in the Junior Boys 1500m.

Charles Henderson qualified for CIS in the Boys 13 years Shotput and Lockie Taylor in the Boys 14 1500m.

For the team’s points score, Redlands had some nail biting results finishing as Runners Up in the Junior Girls teams, Intermediate Girls, Senior Girls and Senior Boys, placing 2nd overall, (22 points behind the winners Kinross), which was an amazing result.

Pastoral Care Focus

Study Skills and Developing Personal Study Habits – It has been an exceptionally busy time for Yr 8 with a very full assessment schedule. As feedback is given, it is important for students to take the time to read feedback closely, refocus, set new academic goals, and prepare ahead for the Yearly Examinations in Term 4 (Week 3).

Our Pastoral focus during Week 10 (Term 3), and Weeks 1 and 2 (Term 4) will continue to be on ‘academic success’. The focus areas will include, organisation and filing, time management skills, dealing with distractions, life balance, managing stress, and the importance of sleep. If looking for strategies which you can use at home, you will find additional information in the Study Skills Handbook (username: Redlands / password: 68results).

News and Achievements
  • Hugo McKay has been selected in the U13 Swans Academy Squad for the NSW/ACT AFL Championships to be held in Albury over the October school holidays. Well done, Hugo!
  • This week the Prefects are hosting Spirit Week. From Wednesday to Friday, Prefects have been running events which celebrate Redlands culture of Art, Sport and House.
  • Secondary School Athletics photos are scheduled for Friday 21 September.
  • It has been wonderful to watch Yr 7 and Yr 12 students playing handball together in Liggins Quad this week.

Examinations

Examinations will be held in Week 3, Term 4. Students should receive study guides and a timetable shortly (either before the end of term or the start of Term 4). Please refer to the Yr 7 Assessment Handbook available on Redlands Pulse or contact your son/daughter’s teacher for individual inquiries.

Detention

It is school policy that if a student does not turn up to their allocated lunch time detention then it rolls over to an automatic Friday afternoon detention. Up until this point I have been giving students the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to sit another lunchtime detention, however, as of Term 4, Yr 7 students will be expected to attend their detention on the first instance.

Devices and Gaming

Should a student be found to be using their laptop incorrectly in the classroom, their device will be removed and stored in the Secondary School Office for the day. Students will need to complete work in a class notebook. Should a student be found in breach of the school’s BYOD policy on a second occasion, sanctions will be increased. A reminder that mobile phones are to be stored in student lockers. If a student is found to have their mobile on them, this will be removed and stored in the Secondary School Office.

Redlands Spring Fair

What an event! Blessed in glorious summer sunshine, last Saturday’s biennial Spring Fair was a truly memorable community occasion for Redlands and it was such a joy to see so many of our students, parents, staff, alumni and members of our local community here enjoying all the fun of the fair.

Held every two years since 1899, the fair was once again organised by a dedicated group of parent volunteers, ably assisted by an army of other parents, staff, alumni and friends of Redlands, all of whom played important roles in ensuring that the Spring Fair was a resounding success.

The Spring Fair’s conveners, Trudy Waterfield and Jean Martin, did a phenomenal job in coordinating the whole event, which has been months in the planning. In turn, they were most ably supported by a dedicated Spring Fair committee team of Laura Briggs, Felicity Gates, Kristina Green, Maria Kinsela and Fiona Mears, as in turn, this committee were supported by many parents who assisted with coordinating various aspects of the Fair.

From the School’s perspective, our Deputy Principal, Ms McGarry, was an integral part of the overall planning of the fair and I also pay particular recognition to the tireless work and efforts of our Facilities team; before, during and after the fair.

In total, we are thrilled to announce that the fair raised over $60,000 which will be dedicated towards improving the outdoor facilities on both the Junior and Senior campuses for the benefit of all of our students.

The Kids Cancer Project

Last Friday, our Junior Campus students joined forces and enjoyed a non-uniform day with ‘a touch of gold’ as we again supported the research work of The Kids’ Cancer Project, a charity that holds particular significance for our Redlands community. Together with sales of wristbands, handballs, badges and raffle tickets to win one of the two bears, our Campus raised a wonderful $1,951 for the organisation. As with so many of our initiatives to help others and particularly other children, this fundraiser was planned and organised by students and I thank Yr 4 students Stella Cunningham, Charlie Hoskin, Zoe Hicks and Chloe Hitchens for their compassion and leadership and for making a difference to the lives of others.

Digital Citizenship

This week, we welcomed Brett Lee from Internet Safe Education to speak to Yrs 5 and 6 about both the importance of and how to stay safe on the Internet and be a responsible user of technology.

With 22 years’ experience in the Australian police, 16 of those as a detective, Brett’s real-life experience in this field, as well as time he spent in the US working with the FBI on aspects of internet security, safety and crime, certainly captured the students’ attention. I would encourage parents of Yrs 5 and 6 to have a conversation with your child to gauge the messages that they took away from the session, which we will continue to remind and reinforce here at school too, as necessary. Many of the messages about responsibility were also not just about technology and he reminded students that they had to take ownership of the choices they made online and I share some of his key takeaway points below for parents’ reference as well.

  • The Internet is public and permanent; once you post something, you cannot take it back
  • Think before you post. If someone can see what you post, they can also share it with others
  • Protect your personal information and make sure you use privacy settings correctly
  • People you meet on the Internet are strangers
  • If we feel upset online, get off the Internet and tell a trusted adult about it
  • Rules and responsibilities online are real and we have federal cyber bullying laws

The Arnold Library has purchased five copies of Mr Lee’s parent reference book, Screen Resolution, should parents wish to borrow a copy from our parent reference section.

Spanish News

In our assembly this week, Señora Colagiuri announced the wonderful results for Redlands Junior School in the Language Perfect NSW Championships.

Redlands Junior School came 3rd overall in this Statewide competition and 1st for Spanish. This is another incredible achievement and we are very proud of the efforts and accomplishments of our students to collectively achieve this result.

Class 6R was the highest scoring class, winning a pizza party and the highest scoring students in each year (Yr 3 – Rowan Petersen; Yr 4 – Gabriela Diaz Caldwell; Yr 5 – Krishna Gupta; Yr 6 – Brandon Diaz Caldwell), each received a $30 iTunes voucher. We acknowledged all of our leading points scorers in our assembly and I thank Señora Colagiuri and the students for their enthusiastic approach to learning Spanish in the Junior School.

Jump Rope for Heart

Thank you to everybody who has helped to fundraise for Jump Rope for Heart over this term. We have raised $40,000 which will help to raise awareness for the Heart Foundation. For every death from cancer in Australia, there are three deaths from Heart Disease and the rate is rising. Part of our hope is that our students also note the message to stay active, eat well and maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood. So many students from the Junior School have taken this message on board and throughout the term have been participating in a timed one minute skip off. Congratulations to our top four skippers: Sofia Thorne (237), Tobias Edmonds-Wilson (178), James Ashby (167) and Isaac Brooks (167). It has been wonderful to also see the parents of Redlands getting involved with the One Minute Skipping Challenge with parents turning up to school in trainers to have a go!

Next Wednesday is our ‘Jump Off Day’ where all students will be participating in various skipping rotation activities to celebrate the new skills they have learnt throughout the term.

Fruit Alert

With the recent news of fruit contamination in some parts of Australia, particularly for strawberries, I make note for parents to be mindful of fruit that children bring in and where possible, cut up fruit beforehand.

Cocurricular Clubs

Please note that the Tuesday after school clubs that class teachers organise ends this week as we do not run these in the first or last week of terms. Our Wednesday Maths, English and Debating Clubs will resume in Week 2 of Term 4.

Lost Property

Our School Captains presented a great video in assembly about the students’ responsibility to take some ownership of the ‘beast’ that is student lost property. Classes and SRC leaders will also discuss ways in which they feel that this can be part of the students’ focus and not left for staff or parents to constantly pick up after them. Mrs Fairfax has again spent considerable time repatriating named lost property but I am perplexed that we still also have a lot of unnamed items of clothing, in particular. Over the holiday break, we will clear all of the unnamed belongings again so I have encouraged students, and also ask parents to help us, to claim their lost property before the end of term.

Please be reminded to book if you would like to use our Vacation Care in the upcoming holiday break. This can be done by visiting the Carebookings website and enter the booking code WF9JG.

Carnival Fun

The conditions were perfect for the much-anticipated Redlands Spring Fair last Saturday, seeing several thousand people through our gates. The day itself will always hold a special place in my heart because if was exactly two years ago on Spring Fair day, that I commenced at Redlands. This time around was a whole different experience having had a small window into the enormous organisational efforts of the Spring Fair Committee and of course knowing the School community so much more. The rides, toy stalls, crazy hair and farm animals were highlights for the Prep students, whilst the talented student performances on the stage, the Redlands Bazaar and delicious treats in the Alumni tent were favourites for the parents. Regardless of your favourite part, the event, held biannually, is really about celebrating the School community with its rich history and cultural diversity. A most heartfelt thank you to Jean Martin and Trudy Waterfield, who seamlessly coordinated the event with assistance from Felicity Gates, Maria Kinsela, Kristina Green, Laura Briggs and Fiona Mears, as well as all the parents who assisted with organising various aspects of the Fair. In addition to the multitude of parent helpers, the School’s Facilities team, Marketing, Alumni and Foundation, Archives, AV, Canteen, Finance and Junior Campus Administration worked with enthusiasm and energy alongside the Spring Fair Committee. Finally, a thank you to all the families who bought raffle tickets, wristbands for the rides, plants, coupons, cakes, toys and food on the day. Your generosity is appreciated and funds raised will go toward outdoor facilities on both the Junior and Senior Campuses.

Jump Rope for Heart

Thank you to the Redlands community who have helped to raise funds for Jump Rope for Heart. We have already raised $40,000, which is a significant sum and an amount we should be very proud of. The goal for this project was two-fold; to reach $70,000 in donations and to raise student awareness about the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. The students were delighted to see their teachers jump rope on Monday in Prep Assembly as they reached their goal of $40,000. It was certainly a lot of fun and very rewarding for the students who have diligently worked to fundraise. The next target is $50,000 where teachers and students can wear crazy hats to school!

Raising awareness for the Heart Foundation is an important initiative, reminding students to take note of the message to stay active, eat well and maintain a healthy lifestyle through into adulthood. Many students from the Preparatory School have taken this message on board and throughout the term have been participating in a timed, one minute skip off. Congratulations to the top four skippers Joshua Svensson (164), James Emmett (164), Hugo Steadman (159) and Ethan Condous (152). It has been wonderful to see the parents of Redlands getting involved in the One Minute Skipping Challenge with parents turning up to school in trainers to participate.

Next Wednesday is our ‘Jump Off Day’ where all students will be participating in various skipping rotations to celebrate the new skills they have gained throughout the term.  Please sign up at this Jump Rope for Heart link.

Make A Difference Day – 25 September

In Chapel and Christian Studies this coming week, students will be looking at the difference that Jesus made to others and unpack the compassionate way he lived his life. Consideration will be given to the difference his death and resurrection has made and the offer of friendship and peace with God. In response to this message, the Preparatory School will be given an opportunity to consider how they might make a difference. Make a Difference Day usually raises funds and awareness for issues impacting children overseas. This year we will be having a change of focus, making a difference by participating in activities that are not driven by cost but are often considered priceless by the recipient and giver alike. Students, staff and families will be encouraged to use next Tuesday 25 September as a time to use their creativity, thoughtfulness, energy and kindness to make a difference in the lives of others. A particular focus of next Tuesday will be a note writing station in the playground where children, parents, staff, carers can write a card, create a picture or make a paper gift for someone. The note writing stall will be available before school, recess, lunch and after school so please encourage your children to take part. We will be encouraging students this year to write uplifting notes to older people who are in nursing homes and rarely receive visitors or mail. We are teaming up with pastoral care personnel at nursing homes, who will deliver our notes of well wishes and care. Notes of encouragement and positivity to peers and family members, as well as considering the little things – the smile, the welcome, the kindness, the gift of our talents, will also be a focus. Thank you to the Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms McKenzie, for organising this initiative and sharing this important message, highlighting the values of our school in the process.

  • Date: Thursday 27 September (Week 10) from 8.30-10.30am
  • Dress: Greek God or Goddess costumes over their PE uniform OR they are to bring their PE uniform in a separate bag. Please note that students are not allowed to wear thongs with their costume but sandals are permitted.
The Kids Cancer Project

It was wonderful to see students wearing ‘a touch of gold’ on the Junior Campus last week. Students donated gold coins to wear mufti for the day, to support the research work of The Kids’ Cancer Project. Thank you to Junior School students who brought the idea to Mr Guha and to the Redlands community for helping to raise $1951.00 on the Junior Campus.

Prep Games Day

We invite all families to join us for the annual Preparatory Games Day being held on Friday 28 September. All students from Kindergarten to Yr 2 will be involved in running and field events on the Junior Campus oval. Students are all expected to wear their Sports uniform; sunscreen and a hat are essential as we are expecting warm weather. Parents may take their child home at the end of the Games Day. We do ask however, that you sign your child out at Prep Reception before leaving the School. Staff will be supervising any students remaining after Prep Games Day until the end of the day. After School Care will be operating as normal.

Head of Secondary Sport

Good Bye and Good Luck!

I had the pleasure of attending a range of end of season Sport functions over the previous weeks and it is always a great opportunity to reflect on the season gone and review our programs moving forward. One notable difference with the end of the Winter Sport season is that it signifies the final time Yr 12 students are recognised by their peers for their contribution to school sport, what they have completed and what they have gained from their involvement in Sport at Redlands. As we say farewell to Yr 12s this week, I would like to encourage them all to continue to be involved in sport in a competitive manner after their time at school. Whilst any form of physical activity is beneficial for the mind and the body, competitive sport offers different and far greater benefits than basic physical fitness activities. Competitive sport in all its forms is one of our greatest teachers in life. It is self-directed, intrinsically motivated, team based and most of all fun. Yet, sport within Australia faces some significant challenges both now and the future. The influence of technology, diminishing volunteer bases, reduced public funding and rising competition from fitness and leisure pursuits are just a few. Last year Aus Play (ASC, 2017) participation data revealed that involvement in competitive sport has diminished by 27% since 2001 with only 1 in 5 people over the age of 14 participating in competitive sport.

Soccer and Rowing (both Redlands Sports) are interestingly two of the only top 27 sports that has showed a significant increase of participants, 46% and 64% respectively. It is the more common and growing leisure pursuits of walking, swimming, cycling and yoga that have shifted the participation numbers. Whilst women’s sport has seen recent increases in funding and pay for professional women athletes, these statistics are relevant to both genders. It is in this regard that we must acknowledge that we still have a long way to go in the promotion of women in sport in Australian society.

I encourage all of our departing Year 12 students to continue to engage with sport after school and not just by spectating but also playing and competing. Whether it is a university team, local club or representative pathway, I guarantee that taking part in competitive sport will return huge benefits to the lives you lead. I would hope that the same way students have built friendships and learnt lifelong lessons in school sport, they continue to receive this and more beyond our school gates.

I leave you with the parting words of Michael Jordan in an interview when he retired from professional Basketball “Just play. Have Fun. Enjoy the Game!”.

Athletics

We will be having the ISA and NSWCIS Athletics photos on Friday 21 September after lunch. Students are reminded that they need to bring to school their full Redlands Sports tracksuit, Redlands athletic singlet or Redlands sports polo.

Football

Thank you to all players and parents who attended the Football dinner. Congratulations to our award winners from the season.

Summer Sport

Wednesday Summer Sports have begun and, with beautiful warm spring weather, our teams got off to a great start. Our surfers have had some great conditions and the new sailing and SUP venues have been a big hit with our water recreation kids.

Basketball trials are well underway and our coaches have been testing agility, skills and fitness across all of our basketballers in an effort to nail down our team selections. Before school training has begun and skills and drills sessions will be running in Dunnet Hall each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before school. 7.15-8.00am. It’s great to start the school day with a workout and sessions are available for players in the development, mixed and girls programs. It’s bound to help too, more practice and time with ball in hand will always help to build skills. Our coaches are there and ready.

HICES Athletics Reps

Redlands athletes hit the track at CIS last week with some great performances, with many of our 20 strong HICES representatives making finals or performing personal bests. Our Junior Boys relay team won through to the Final in a hot time of 1 minute flat. Our Senior boys relay team, after qualifying 9th fastest for the Final, improved two spots to finish 7th in a dazzling 55.5 seconds.

Lucius Midas and Mitchell Travers-Wolf rounded out their days both making 200m Finals in their respective age groups after anchoring their relay teams.

Isaac Brooks ran one of the bravest 800m races I’ve ever seen, going hard early and then relying on grit and competitive spirit to hold off all comers until the final 80 metres. He finished in 5th as the field reeled him in, the heat of the competition knocking five seconds off his already impressive personal best, his new mark 2.27.82.

Charlotte Hugman won through to represent CIS at the NSWPSSA championships after finishing with a silver medal in the Girls 100m. Good luck to Charlotte in that upcoming meet.

Holiday Basketball Clinics

Basketballers can attend school holiday skills clinics which are slated for 8, 9 and 10 October. Check in with juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au for details.

Spring Fair – Rock Programs

It is certainly clear that the Rock Band program at Redlands is thriving and going from strength to strength. From students in Yrs 5-11, the various performances presented on the main stage of the Entertainment Quarter at the Spring Fair showcased a wide variety of musical talents and students exploring various Rock styles. Thanks to our team of dedicated Rock specialists, Mr Pete Atkins, Mr Diego Idarraga, Mr Nathaniel Smith and Mrs David Wooltorton, for their exceptional mentoring of the students this year and providing enriching learning experiences. Thanks is also extended to Mrs Hilary Luck for managing the event on the day and AV support provided by Janis Auzins and his crew, inclusive of students Thomas Wightwick and Andrew Verschoor.

In continuing to provide performance experiences for our aspiring contemporary musicians, students enrolled in the Redlands Rock Band program will be presenting two lunchtime concerts in continuing to hone their skills in readiness for Battle of the Bands 2019.

  • Junior Campus Rock in the Quad (Yrs 5-6 Bands) – Tuesday 30 October (1.00pm)
