Secondary Sport
Sport plays a crucial role in the development of adolescents, offering numerous benefits beyond physical fitness. It is a powerful tool that builds resilience and teamwork, instilling essential life skills that contribute to their overall growth and well-being. Engaging in sports helps adolescents develop resilience by exposing them to challenges and setbacks. They learn to face adversity, cope with failures, and bounce back stronger. Whether it’s losing a game or facing a tough opponent, sports teach them the importance of perseverance, determination, and the ability to overcome obstacles. These experiences build resilience, enabling adolescents to handle future difficulties with confidence and resilience. Athletes learn to work together towards a common goal, developing the understanding and significance of effective communication, cooperation, and trust, which are essential not just on the field but also in various aspects of life. By collaborating with teammates, adolescents discover the power of collective effort and the value of supporting and relying on others. As Michael Jordan, the renowned basketball player, once said, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” This quote emphasises the significance of teamwork and highlights how success in sports, as well as in life, relies not solely on individual talent but on the ability to work together harmoniously. Through facing challenges and setbacks, they develop resilience, allowing them to face future obstacles with confidence.
This week in the ‘what sport meant to me’ we hear from one of the newest members of the Redlands Sports Department, Georgina Ford. George, the Redlands Director of Netball has a wealth of knowledge and experience within sport.
What sport meant to me? – Georgina Ford (Director of Netball)
Sport to me has always means being part of something bigger than myself. It has always been a part of my life, something I was exposed to early on and something that was never not there for me. My father lost his left leg to cancer at 26 yrs old, so I have never seen him with 2 legs. He was a successful rugby player and long jumper prior to this.
Somewhere along the way sport in our family became about showing him what we could do that he now couldn’t, it wasn’t a sad thing, it wasn’t a chore, it was more about giving him joy watching my sisters and I play and develop a love of what he could now not do.
When I was younger, I was quite a good swimmer (for a minute!) It was hard the hours were long and the training lonely before and after school. I missed out on the ‘cool’ things my friends were doing after school and for a while felt resentment towards my training and hours away from the cool kids.
However, I know years later these many hours looking at the black line at the bottom of the pool built in me a commitment and dedication that I have bought to my life today, to my marriage and my parenting.
I also played a lot of yes, you guessed, it NETBALL! This is where I found my love of sport, my love of being with friends, going to long weekend carnivals, stage age championships, sleep overs before carnivals, sleep over after carnivals and yes, I loved the trainings too- this was the FUN stuff. It did help that I had some hand eye coordination and was tall for my age as I progressed through the successful pathways offered.
It is now lovely to be able to give back my knowledge and love of the game to all here at Redlands. Sport can help shape who you are, you don’t have to be great- you just need to enjoy it. I am a far better netball coach than I was a player – but that’s ok with me as this has shaped who I am, given our family an expat life and I know my children have this same love for friendship and comradery in their sport. Sport has shaped how I parent my 3 children and I know it will resonate with them one day the joy you can have watching your children do something they love and really want to do.
‘Excellence is never an accident. It is the results of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution. It represents the wisest option among many alternatives. Choice, not chance, determines your destiny, dreams and values’

All students will have their normal training sessions on Tuesday 13th June following the long weekend.
Congratulations to those students who were named in the team of the week for Round 6!

Hockey
It was a very foggy morning for our Hockey cohort at Barker College on Saturday. The Junior Girls were up first and with a close first half, it was proving to be one of the toughest games the team have had to date this season. However, in the second half our girls came out firing and finished the game with a convincing 5-1 win over Barker, cementing their spot in first place on the ladder. Our goal scorers for the game were Sahara (3), Ava (1) and Jasmine (1). The 1st Girls were up next against Barker 1st in what has become a healthy rivalry between the two schools. After a fantastic first half, the Redlands 1st Girls were up 2-0 at half time. Barker came out with a point to prove after the half time break and soon enough had managed to tie the game, and a final goal from Barker saw the game end with a 3-2 lead in their favour. Despite not getting the win, it was a fantastic game by the Redlands 1st Girls and they have shown that they can compete at the level of the top teams in the competition. A special shoutout to Remie who stepped up as goalkeeper and did a fantastic job with the regular goalkeeper out sick.
We have one final round this term on Saturday 17 June before we break for the school holidays. All students will have their normal training sessions on Tuesday 13 June following the long weekend.
Netball
Inter F’s played a strong game with only 5 to start but Ruby Gasmus from the Junior C’s kindly joined the team and played for them for a half. The team worked really hard and were in the mix against CCGS for a while but, unfortunately there was an injury and the Inter F’s were back to 5 for the last half. They persevered, never gave up and I was impressed their comradery and resilience. Here they are here, still smiling after the loss. Well done girls!

The Inter D team had 2 back to back wins at Chev with the majority of the team only just returning from a week of camp- super effort girls. Sleep ins are overrated!

The Inter A’s & B’s also had a great win at Chev. The Second VII had a close game with just a loss by 2. There were some other great wins by Junior teams too, so pleasing to see ! Our Firsts had a tough game and fought hard but didn’t get the win but showed great focus and strength.
Week by week , each team is just getting better and better and the teamwork and friendships between teams are growing. I spoke about helping others last week if teams were short and the girls have definitely stepped up- when asked to help others, they jump up and say yes- this is so great to see, thank you girls.
It was with pleasure that I received an email about the calm and constructive coaching style by one of our coaches this weekend of the Junior Gs’, Jacquie Gray. A snapshot of the feedback is listed below. Well done Jacquie and thank you to all our dedicated coaches who continue to work hard with the girls week in week out. Their dedication and commitment to their teams is abundantly clear.
“I only felt gratitude for the calm, civilised and respectful way in which the entire Redlands crew handled themselves this morning. I could hear only positive messages to our girls from Jackie. “ What a wonderful netball community we have at Redlands.
Our “Top Trainers” last week were for great attitudes, punctuality, consistent effort and hard work were:
Bronte Backhouse, Eva Simpson, Sophia Liu, Sasha Rowe, Lily Wainberg, Alba Martin- Gomez, Georgia Cavric, Ava Field, Ava Taylor, Audrey Kwok, Sabine Murray, Indi Hindmarsh, Freya Kittle, Remy Morriss, Ruby Wood, Eva Fitzhenry, Aneke Golowenko and Tara Ward.

Here are are your Junior H team who are all mostly new to netball , had a loss but are always smiling and wanting to do better???? each week.

Rugby
Weekly recap:
Our game of the week was the 14’s fixture. The Redlands boys put on a clinic, scoring some of the best tries we’ve seen this season. Unlucky to go down on the scoreboard in the last 2 minutes, the boys put up a great fight against the undefeated CCGS side. A highlight of the game, Charlie Reeves kick through and regather to run 50m and score, as well as Hector Maxwells carry off a penalty that saw him charge about 30m down field.
We are proud of the continued fighting spirit demonstrated this season by all teams.
