Issue 17 2023 Term 2 Week 7 - 08 Jun 2023

From the Principal

One of our five key Strategic Drivers at Redlands is to ‘Integrate and Advocate Sustainable Best Practices’ and it is wonderful to see so many sustainability initiatives taking place across the School this year.

Earlier this week, Redlands hosted two events as part of the Round Square Network of schools to celebrate World Ocean Day. On Tuesday, over 200 students and staff from Round Square network schools in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Coffs Harbour came together on our campus to hear from guest speakers Zali Steggal OAM (federal member for Warringah), Sarah-Jo Lobwein, Kal Glanznig and Tim Johnston. Later the students had the opportunity to share their views and ideas in breakout sessions led by Redlands students.

On Wednesday, as a follow up to this event, Redlands students led a Zoom ‘Online Postcard’ World Oceans Day event where they connected with over 80 students from around the world, including India, China, Kenya, South Africa and Australia, to further discuss and share sustainability ideas and initiatives.

I believe it was fitting that our first Redlands-run Round Square events, after joining the network earlier this year, were focusing on sustainability, as the feedback from the Round Square panel when reviewing our application for membership was that we are an educational leader in this space – not just nationally but internationally, as well.

Our leadership in sustainability was further highlighted in late May when we hosted the Zero Emissions Network Meeting of local schools and our Year 6 and Year 12 Environment Captains, as well as key staff, were able to share our sustainability journey at Redlands.

Our commitment to sustainability is strengthened by the support and direction of the Sustainability Working Group and the Sustainability Community Advisory Group, comprised of Board Directors, parents, staff and students from across the school.

Already, the School has installed solar panels on the Junior Campus and switched to LED lights and Energy Monitoring Systems across all three campuses as part of our ongoing focus on how we can reduce our carbon footprint. While the development of our Sustainability Strategy will shape how we further reduce our environmental impact moving forward, there are many current student driven sustainability initiatives that have already been implemented this year, such as:

  • Sustainability School Gardens across all the campuses (Prep pollinator beds, the Junior vegetable garden and the Senior Campus rooftop garden)
  • Installation of compost bins and worm bins
  • Enhanced recycling initiatives, including coffee cup and coffee pod recycling, the installation of Return and Earn bins, battery recycling, e-waste recycling and toothbrush/toothpaste recycling
  • Quarterly waste audits across Junior and Senior campuses
  • Further sustainability initiatives in the canteens, including the usage of paper water bottles, compostable packaging, a cutlery library and the move to plastic free canteens

Most pleasingly, it is our students who are shaping our journey towards a more sustainable school, community and future through their passion, initiative and drive.

Expanding the High Country Campus

Originally developed by the School in partnership with the Redlands Parents and Friends Association, High Country Campus was opened in 1996 with two accommodation buildings. Two more buildings have been added since, but to accommodate the whole of Year 9 split over two terms, we need capacity to house approximately 20 more students and 12 more staff. An expansion of our High Country Campus facilities will also provide the opportunity for more students to experience our Winter School program.

Your support of this year’s Foundation Appeal will help prepare this facility for the introduction of our Experiential Learning Program in 2025 and the potential future expansion of our Winter School.

For further information please visit Foundation section.

Community Update

It has been lovely to experience the coming together of staff, students, staff, alumni, our Board and special guests in celebration of Heritage Week. As a community, we value the relationships we have with each other. Our students past and present, families, staff and members of local and global communities are valued and included through a shared connection with Redlands. Foundation Day, to be celebrated tomorrow, provides us with the unique opportunity to share and connect our past with the present and future of the School.

Our Liggins Building, a precious part of Redlands’ heritage, is the only remaining element of our school grounds that links 100 years of Redlanders. Originally known as Liggins House, the building was opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. Throughout its history, our community has generously supported some of its upgrades, including the 2007 Liggins Atrium Project enjoyed by students today. As the Liggins Building celebrates its centenary year, we continue on a significant restoration to help preserve its historic façade and refurbish the interior to provide an exceptional learning environment for our students and staff. For more information on how you can support this treasured building can be found here.

Last Friday, we were delighted to welcome more than 200 of our most recent alumni back on campus.  It was wonderful to see the connection and reconnection of our students with each other and the School. Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally. We continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities and a quarterly newsletter. We greatly value the relationships we have with our Alumni and our aim is to continue to support a lifelong connection and engagement to the School.

Tickets for the highly anticipated Redlands Gala Ball are selling fast.  There are still tickets available and a reminder that all proceeds from this gala fundraising event will benefit the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship Appeal. For more information on tickets and sponsorship of this uniquely Redlands event, along with information on our Annual Giving program, please visit the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Making a Difference Together

A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference focusing on the Advancement area of schools and community involvement. It was only a confirmation that our Redlands community has a strong and generous tradition of service and giving. Together we can make a difference which benefits current students and future generations.

Expanding the High Country Campus

This year’s Annual Giving provides an opportunity to support the expansion of the High Country Campus which was originally developed by the School in partnership with the Redlands Parents and Friends Association. The Campus was opened in 1996 with two accommodation buildings and two more buildings have been added since. This was only possible due to generous contributions of Redlands families.

A few months ago, we announced the launch of a new residential Experiential Program for our Year 9 students in 2025. In order to accommodate the whole of Year 9 split over two terms and the future expansion of our Winter School, we need capacity to house approximately 20 more students and 12 more staff.

Please join us, our Board, Executive and staff by contributing to our Appeal this year. Every gift, large or small, makes a difference! A donation of $2 and more is tax deductible in Australia.

Back to Campus Reunion

Last Friday the energy in Redlands Hall was electric as over 200 Alumni from classes of 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018 gathered back on campus.  We would like to give a special shout-out to our exceptional year group ambassadors: Sophie Marrott (RL 2012), Romy Oesterheld and Chris Blundell (2013), Bernie Croll and Annie Ryan (past School Captains 2017), and Zac Pincini (School Captain 2018). Their dedication and efforts in organizing these reunions were instrumental in making them a resounding success.

Redlands Parents and Friends

This week, as we celebrate 139 years of Redlands, I’d like to thank all the parents and carers who have actively been engaged in supporting the school community, from the day to day activities of class parents, year parents and the various section coordinators, to the weekly seasonal efforts of our friends of sport, dance and music, to the volunteers for ad hoc events such as secondhand uniform and book sales as well as exam assistance, to those parents who helped with big events like Twilight Drinks and Autumn Fair (which also has a long standing history since 1894). A thousand thanks!

Secondhand Uniforms

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support our secondhand uniforms sales. We are looking to hold another sale in the afternoon of Sat 17 Jun.

If you have clean, current uniforms to donate to this cause, please drop them off to the Uniform Shop! We’d love to get more blazers in larger sizes, long sleeved white shirts, fleeces and tracksuits. Please note we are not collecting any items for recycling (eg old sports uniforms) at this time. Please also do not bring in: used socks; dirty, stained or torn items; items purchased from external parties (Marks & Spencer’s, Next) as we cannot sell these items and are running out of storage space.

Gala Ball

Purchase tickets to this fantastic black tie event to be held at the Fullerton Hotel (formerly the Westin) on Sat 12 Aug. You don’t need to organise a table to attend! Just nominate a year group(s) you’d like to sit with and Foundation will work their magic.

Celebrating World Ocean Day at Redlands!

We are thrilled to share the highlights of our World Ocean Day event held on Tuesday, where Redlands had the pleasure of hosting five schools from the Round Square network. Radford College in Canberra, Bishop Druitt College Coffs Harbour, Newcastle Grammar, MLC, and Barker College joined us for a day filled with inspiration and environmental awareness.

The festivities began with lunch on Redlands’ rooftop garden, where our visitors had the opportunity to learn about our gardening club and sustainability initiatives. It was a fantastic way to start the day, connecting with nature and sharing ideas. Our program then moved into a more formal setting, where we were honoured to have Ms. Zali Steggall OAM MP as a special guest speaker. Ms. Steggall emphasised the importance of ensuring our elected government represents the interests and concerns of the people, as well as the current environmental projects being pursued. The event continued with engaging presentations featuring ocean conservation experts Sarah-Jo Lobwein, Kal Glanzing, and Tim Johnston. Their remarkable work to protect our oceans inspired our students to take that crucial first step towards becoming the change they wish to see in the world. To deepen our understanding of marine conservation, we screened the documentary film “Rubber Jellyfish,” shedding light on the devastating impact of balloons on marine life. It was a powerful reminder of our responsibility to safeguard our precious ocean habitats.

In the spirit of collaboration, our Redlands students led breakout groups, enabling students from the various schools to share ideas for future collaborations and initiatives. It was heartening to witness the passion and dedication of these young minds in their commitment to protecting the ocean we all share. But our efforts didn’t stop there. On Wednesday, our Redlands students had the privilege of sharing their learning and experiences with an international audience of Round Square schools through a Zoom “Post Card.” Over 80 participants from India, China, Australia, Kenya, and South Africa joined in to hear about our live event and collaborate across national borders.

World Ocean Day reminded us of the power of collective action and the global impact we can effect when we unite for a common cause. Let us continue to be the stewards of our oceans and work together to preserve these invaluable ecosystems for future generations.

A sincere thank you to Redlands staff Ms Carty Haverhals and Ms Liz Green and to all the schools, guests, and participants who made this event a tremendous success. Together, we can make a difference!

2023 Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival was a fun day of track and field events. There was laughter and colour across all year levels, and it is always pleasing to see Year 12 enjoy themselves in one of their final Redlands events for the year.

Most impressive was the High Jump session I watched with Ms Partington and a lot of very loud young Redlands men who were cheering on Daniel Benoliel (Year 8) and Ashley Corn (Year 9) whose jumping achievements were outstanding. It was a delight to watch the support the students had for these two young men and the collective joy in their success.

While the Redlands Athletics Carnival was taking place, the CIS Cross Country (XC) Championships were also being held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Of particular note:

Isaac Brooks placed 8th in the CIS XC Championships and has now qualified for the NSW All Schools XC

Imogen Howard placed 7th in the 15 years 4 KM and has also made it through to the All Schools XC

Yr 9 Camp Reintegration Evening

The Year 9 Camp to Arnhem Land was an incredible experience. Students will no doubt have shared their experiences; there is a lot for them to process.

To assist with this, we’ll be holding our Reintegration Evening on Tuesday 13 June at 5.30pm in Redlands Hall. All Year 9 students are expected to attend and we also invite parents and carers to attend to find out more about what the students experienced in Arnhem Land. If students are returning from Sport training they may attend this event in sport uniform (otherwise full school uniform). If students wish to remain on campus prior to this event, they are expected to attend Study Centre in the Learning Hub for the duration of the time. If not, they need to depart the campus and return with parents at 5.30pm.

The purpose of the evening is to guide students to purposefully use the knowledge and understanding they have gained, and for them to be able to share their experiences with parents, carers and other members of the school community.

We look forward to all Camp Groups contributing, through a series of reflections or by sharing their ‘giving back’ performances.

We will be joined by Emily, Troy and Randy (Yolngu man) from Culture College who will offer advice to students on how to make sense of what they experienced and give them some ways to implement the learnings to their life back in Sydney. We are excited to share some further opportunities for students to connect with the Yolngu in the future.

We look forward to welcoming parents and carers of Year 9 students to school next Tuesday evening for this important connection event.

Senior Music Festival

Don’t forget to get your tickets for next Friday’s Senior Music Festival at The Concourse in Chatswood. We have over 200 students performing in what promises to be a wonderful celebration of Music. Participants and their families are asked to check the communication from the Music Department for rehearsal and bus timings.

Tickets can be purchased directly from The Concourse Box Office.

Reminders for Parents

Student uniform standards are important. We appreciate you taking the time to support the School and in particular, the Year Advisors, who uphold these standards as part of their mission to develop students’ self-respect, self-care and commitment to being part of a community.

Students must arrive and leave school wearing their School blazer, even if they are stepping out of your car on Waters Road and walking a few steps into school. All students are expected to wear their Blazer in Term 2 and 3.

If students are cold during the day at School, they are permitted to wear one of the two blue woollen jumpers for sale at the uniform shop. Hoodies, fleeces and other sports jackets are not permitted with the Winter uniform. For Sport training, students are required to wear their appropriate sport uniform and for PDHPE classes, students need to wear the appropriate PDHPE uniform. Basketball hoodies and alumni hoodies are not permitted and if worn, students will be required to remove them.

Girls’ skirts should be worn just above the knee – not mid thigh. Girls wearing tights with holes or ladders will be required to replace them from the uniform shop.

Students are permitted to wear one set of earrings – one earring in each lower lobe. This should be a small understated stud or sleeper.

Students are expected to have a hair-cut which enables their face to be visible to the community. Mullet hairstyles are not permitted and students will be sent to the barber for an appropriate haircut. Students with hair longer than shoulder length will need to tie it back in a simple ponytail or bun.

Mobile phones are to be left in student lockers during the school day. All students should have a lock on their locker. If parents need to contact a student during the day, we strongly encourage you to phone the school rather than reach out to your teenager directly via text message or phone call. The reception staff are happy to field your requests and thereby support our young people to experience individuation.

We take our duty of care seriously and request your support to ensure your child is safe at all times. The School day concludes at 3.30pm or when students return from Sport training. If students wish to remain at school after these times, they are expected to attend Study Centre, which is a supervised space, inside the Learning Hub. There is no supervision for students to ‘play’ on the Fahl Garden, basketball courts or in the undercroft after school. Students are requested to go directly home from school and not visit McDonalds, Chargrill Charlie’s or Woolworths. They should make their way home, rest and then engage in homelearning and revision. If they wish to engage in homelearning at School, then they must go straight to the Study Centre. We suggest you encourage them to pack afternoon tea, because students are not permitted to leave school to buy food and then return again later to study. As part of our duty of care students either remain at school to study in the Study Centre, or they travel directly home.

Pride Week Reflection – Dan Close

“Today is the sixth of June – which means Pride month is in full swing. So, a huge happy Pride to those who celebrate. Now, you may be wondering, and rightfully so, why we walk about gay stuff all the time – what with IDAHOBIT, Wear It Purple and now Pride – clearly we spend a lot of time as a school celebrating and supporting the queer community. Well, I think it’s due to a few things. If I said that this country had zero problems with discrimination against queer people I would be lying to you.  And as a school community, as a Redlands community, we are also not perfect – as no school community is.

But what does Pride even mean? I think it’s about not feeling guilt or shame about your identity and being able to be comfortable with who you are given your environment. Unfortunately, it’s often the environment where Pride can be stifled.

So, as a student body, we can encourage and celebrate Pride by standing up against and not participating in casual discrimination like slurs and offensive language. Call out bad behaviour when you see it.

Thankfully we live in a world where queer people are visible and, in Australia, they are able to be Prideful without fear of political or legal repercussions. But we still have a long way to go for true Pride to be universally achieved. This Pride month, let’s make a meaningful change in the school community. Let’s consider how our behaviour impacts our queer friends. And let’s celebrate each other because all of us deserve to be celebrated.”

A Message from Year Advisors

This week, students interested in leadership opportunities for Yr 12 have been busily completing written and/or video applications as these submissions are due Friday at 4pm. All information for students is in the iLearn Pastoral Yr 11 Page. Last Friday, students heard from Mrs Van de Peer with further information about the application process and students were able to ask any questions at that time.

Alongside camp group and activity selections, year group photos, service initiatives, the Athletics Carnival, assessments and weekly study, it has been a busy and exciting time to be a Yr 11 student. Last week, our year assembly focused on what it means to take care of yourself first, set appropriate limits to ensure your own physical and psychological safety, find and focus on the good in those around you while being a good peer yourself and servant leadership. Students were asked to consider how acknowledging and acting on behalf of the needs of the whole group can positively impact an individual.

As the cohort grows closer each year and students realise how meaningful their peer relationships are, if each Yr 11 takes time to care of themselves, strives to look for the good in those around them and acts with positive intentions each day on behalf of the whole, there is no stopping this incredible group of young people.

Thank you, parents and carers, for your ongoing communication and support. It is so appreciated to ensure your children have appropriate measures in place for their personal and academic success.

World Ocean Day

This week, Redlands hosted an event celebrating World Oceans Day. Several Round Square schools were in attendance and further student reflections will be shared in next week’s Note Day.

Senior Theatresports

Redland’s Senior Theatresports Team competed against 8 schools at the Semi-Finals Theatresports Schools Challenge and placed Second! They will now perform at the Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre. The students are incredibly excited and this is an exceptional achievement. The students in the team are: Phoebe Barnett (Yr 12), Claudia Lalich (Yr 12), Hallie Hunt (Yr 11) and Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11). A special thanks to the Theatresports teachers, Sarah Sparkes and Amber Virtue, for doing such an outstanding job in training our students. The Grand Final is on Sunday 18 June, 5:30pm at the Enmore Theatre. Best of luck to this amazing team of students!

World Ocean Day

“This Tuesday, myself and 160 other students from Redlands, Barker College, MLC, Newcastle Grammar, Bishop Druitt in Coffs Harbour and Radford College spent our afternoon attending the World Oceans Day event, excitingly hosted by Redlands. We started by mingling and getting to know each other on the rooftop garden then moved to the hall where we listened to speakers, including Zali Steggal passionately speak on the importance of ocean conservation and sustainability, their insights resonated deeply within me.

Next, we watched the revealing film titled, ‘Rubber Jellyfish’ that was captivating in its truth telling and call to action that I would recommend to everyone. Everyone was reminded of the immense value and fragility of our oceans and felt a renewed sense of responsibility to protect them. It was a powerful reminder that every individual can make a difference through small actions that collectively contribute to the preservation of our marine ecosystems. The talk left me inspired and committed to playing my part in safeguarding our oceans for future generations. Also, we all had a chance to express and voice our opinions and suggest strategies in breakout groups with a mixture of students of different ages from different schools.

It was an excellent event that allowed me to hear about other students’ initiatives and interests in this subject matter and I am inspired and delighted that I was able to be a part of a step towards a sustainable future”.

Arnhem Land Reflections

Last week, Mr Millham and I were privilaged to journey with Yr 9 as they experienced a truly profound and in many ways life-changing camp. Each student engaged in the program in their own unique way – they connected to the Yolngu land and culture through song, dance and powerful stories, immersed themselves in the ceremony of men’s and women’s business and wholly engaged with each other without technology. We trust that they have taken these experiences home, and taken opportunities to reflect with family about the impact of this camp, both now, and in the future. We look forward to the students sharing these experience with you at the Reintegration Evening next Tuesday 13th June at 5.30pm in Redlands Hall.

Student Reflections

Arkie Riches

Arnhem Land was a truly an eye opening and once in a lifetime experience. I really enjoyed one workshop we did with a lady called Tash. The way she spoke about and demonstrated what it’s like for the indigenous was amazing. She asked us to stand in a line and step forward if the sentence applied to us. Most of us ended up being between 5 and 10 steps from the start. Then, she told us to turn around because where we started was what applied to indigenous people. This took my breath away and made me understand how ignorant we are about first nations people in Australia. At the end of the week I was immersed in Yolngu culture after learning dances, taking part in healing and their practices in kinship. I’m so grateful for all that was shared with me throughout the week and will pass my learning on to others.

Holly Smith

When I first arrived in Arnhem Land, I was nervous about the week ahead. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the camp and the activities we would be doing. My nerves quickly vanished as we were greeted by the Yolngu people, who were so welcoming and open despite us being complete strangers. Over the course of the week, I was shown so many new perspectives and beliefs that really broadened my view on Indigenous culture and lifestyle. These insights were extremely valuable and inspired me to do some research on the Cammeraygal people, who are the traditional owners of the land that I live on. Overall, the camp provided us with many unique and memorable experiences that I definitely won’t forget anytime soon.

A Message from Mr Gray, Dean of Activities:

Arnhem Land Reintegration Evening

I’m sure you’ll agree Year 9 Camp to Arnhem Land was an incredible experience. Students will no doubt will have shared a lot about their experiences and there is a lot for them to process.

The purpose of the evening is to guide students to be able to use the knowledge and understanding they have gained, and for them to be able to share their experiences with parents, carers and other members of the school community.

We look forward to all Camp Groups contributing, through a series of reflections or by sharing their ‘giving back’ performances.

We will be joined by Emily, Troy and Randy (Yolngu man) from Culture College who will offer advice to students on how to make sense of what they experienced and give them some ways to implement the learnings in their lives back in Sydney. We are excited to share some further opportunities for students to connect with the Yolngu in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you to school next Tuesday evening for this important connection event.

Week 7 – Celebrating our Heritage

This week Redlands celebrated their history in the aptly named Heritage week. As part of the events, a group of Yr 7 students – Lachlan Carter, Olivia Krstic, Liv Law, Aaron Oh, Kate Rintoul, Eddie Williams and Mackenzie Willis – presented a fantastic, informative and polished presentation during our Monday Yr 7 assembly, taking us through Redlands’ history from its opening in 1884 all the way to the present. The group had spent the last three weeks meeting with me and school archivist, Ms Gillezeau, to prepare their material, and so the cohort were treated to an exciting history of events in the life of Redlands. I’m confident everyone in the room learned something new about their school.

Did you know???

  • Redlands was established in 1884 by two school teachers from London, Miss Liggins and Miss Arnold. The school first opened in a wooden hall in Milson’s Point with only five students – the nieces of Miss Liggins!
  • With enrolments increasing, the school moved to the Military Road site in 1899 – although, back then it was just a large house with four acres of land surrounding it.
  • The first ever athletics carnival was held in 1907 (that’s 116 years of Athletics Carnivals!)
  • In 1911, the leadership of the school was taken over by Miss Amy Roseby and she established representative sport – the first sport being tennis – in the school.
  • The Liggins building officially opened, on 9 May 1923, making it the oldest lasting building the school.
  • In 1947 three of the current four House groups were introduced – Cowper, MacDouall and Roseby – but the final House, Dumolo was not created until 1966.
  • This week, Yr 7 students received their first editions of Lux, the school’s annual publication, as members of the Senior School, making it 69 years of Lux – first released in 1954.
  • 1966 saw the opening of Redlands Hall first, looking very much like it does today.
  • In 1978, the school became coeducational, with boys admitted into the Junior School and the first boys admitted into Yr 7 (there were only four!)
  • School camps were introduced by then Headmaster, Mr Peter Cornish, in 1981, and so was Innovative Design as a subject.
  • With increased sport in the school, Lang Gym was opened in 1988 as a valuable resource.
  • IB began at Redlands in 1989.
  • High Country Campus was opened in 1996 and a tradition of holding Winter School there began (note, one Winter School had been held in 1995 at Snowy Mountains Grammar School).
  • 2020 saw the wonderful Learning Hub finish being built and opened for school use; it has become the effective centre of the school.
  • And, of course, most significantly, some would say, in 2023 our current Yr 7 cohort became our current Yr 7 cohort! Oh, and Mr Corcoran became our new School Principal!

Such wonderful facts and more were shared by our legendary Yr 7 presentation team.

You can find out more fun facts by visiting Our History on Pulse.

The Fire Alarms are Working!

Monday was also exciting with our fire alarm systems once again proving that they work and are in place to protect students and staff. Midway through lunch the dreaded – woop, woop: ‘warning, the emergency evacuation system has been initiated’: woop woop – echoed across the school. It was not a planned drill, and so we all moved out of the buildings and into the evacuation areas quickly and smoothly. Yr 7 are so adept at lining up and reporting to their Tutors safely. It has been pleasing to see their growth in this space!

For those who are concerned, there did not appear to be a fire anywhere and certainly no one was harmed. We just lost a few minutes of lunch.

Yr 7 School Photo

Wednesday morning gifted us with blue sky, sunshine and the happy faces of Yr 7. It was photo day! As first cab off the drank, Yr 7 strode confidently into the Fahl Garden, ready to join together as the powerhouse year group that they are, and get a wonderful group photo.

Well, it took some wrangling and cajoling, but we eventually managed to get all 175 students into a line from shortest to tallest. Anonymous sources may have said lining up all the students was like herding cats, but we got there! Once in a line, students were distributed across the scaffold until we had a wonderful cohort mass ready to say ‘cheese.’

I must commend Yr 7 on how well behaved they were during this process, listening to instructions, acting on guidance and not making silly faces when it came to the photo. Well done! This will be a photo to treasure down the track, so I encourage you to share it carefully. You can see a preview below!

Being a Round Square School

As you may recall, this year, Redlands joined the Round Square global network of schools, which was part of our strategic plan and desire to provide our students and staff with increased opportunities to connect and learn from other like-minded schools across the world. Currently, there are 243 Round Square schools across the globe and we have already started building relationships and meaningful connections with a number of these schools, both locally and internationally.

The Round Square organisation has six overarching IDEALS: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service and all have an immediate connection to life at Redlands and our own strategic direction.

This week, we were delighted to welcome a number of Australian Round Square schools for afar afield as Coffs Harbour, Canberra and Newcastle as Redlands hosted a World Ocean Day event centred around collaborative conservation across our planet. Among our guest presenters, we were delighted to hear from Zali Steggall OAM MP, Sam Fricker, Tim Johnston, Kal Glanznig and Sarah-Jo Lobwein.

Connected to this event, we were thrilled to welcome Junior School students and school leaders from Radford College in Canberra for two days and as well as meeting our staff and students, the students presented to our Yr 6 students on how Radford College embraces the Round Square IDEALS in their everyday school life. Similarly, our students were also able to share some of the student-led and driven initiatives in the area of sustainability un the last 18 months. We have already started to tentatively explore how we might be able to incorporate a reciprocal visit next year when our Yr 6 students head to Canberra for camp.

Happy 139th Birthday, Redlands!

This week, we have acknowledged the School’s 139th birthday during our Heritage Week.

If you have not had done so, I encourage you to take a few moments to read about our history which is a fascinating journey and read. As part of their transition to Secondary School next year, today our Yr 6 cohort enjoyed a heritage tour of the Senior Campus led by our archivist, Ms Gillezeau, including the Liggins Building which is 100 years old this year.

Next year sees a milestone birthday for our School and we look forward to recognising this special occasion in numerous ways.

June 8 World Ocean Day

Year 2 Students Shine at Round Square Event

The concept of a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world’s shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it.

The Prep School has been reading stories, watching vision and learning all about how their actions, both positive and negative can affect our oceans. We have again used our school values of respect and responsibility to demonstrate how we can keep our oceans healthy for years to come.

At Redlands we are so very fortunate to live and go to school so close to one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Let’s work together to teach our children about keeping it healthy for all the wonderful creatures that live in it. If you would like to know more about World Ocean Day and how to be involved in taking action, here is a place to start.

Learn More

Redlands participated in World Ocean Day alongside other Round Square schools. At the start of the week, staff and students from Radford College, Canberra joined us to share their Round Square journey and to highlight the many ways that being a member of this organisation can connect us with other schools to share learnings, perspectives and experiences. In a fast-moving, ever-changing landscape that our students live in, these connections will be incredibly important in the way our students view themselves in the world. We are very excited to start exploring ways we connect with other schools and their communities.

On Tuesday, senior students from Round Square schools around Sydney gathered in Redlands Hall to participate in World Ocean Day workshops. Our very own Vivienne Cooksley and Leland Haines were thrilled to be asked to deliver the Acknowledgment to Country, which they did with conviction. I was incredibly proud of them as they took to the stage with many teenagers and teachers looking on. The power of student voice never ceases to amaze me.

Heritage Week

Happy 100 years Liggins Building!

Redlands Heritage Week provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the rich and diverse history of Redlands and to learn from stories of the past. This week our prep students have been using photos and stories from the past while respecting the traditional values of the school that drive us forward. Year 1 enjoyed a visit to the Senior School to learn about the Liggins Building and to appreciate it’s 100 years. A big thank you to the Redlands archivist, Marguerite Gillezeau who is always willing to talk to our students.

Supporting Your Child’s Emotional Wellbeing: Fun Activities for Regulation and Awareness

A message from the K-6 counsellors

The P-6 counsellors continue to work with students on how to identify, regulate and understand their big feelings and emotions. During The Big Hearts Project, we had a session focused on helping children regulate and understand their emotions. Here are some activities we explored:

  • Balloon Breathing Exercise: Teach your child to breathe in through their nose, imagining their belly expanding like a balloon, and exhale through their mouth, visualising the balloon deflating. This can help calm their mind and body.
  • Refreshing the Zones of Regulation: Categorise emotions into different zones (green, yellow, blue, and red) to help your child recognise and reflect on their feelings.
  • Strategies to Move Across Zones: Encourage activities like breathing exercises, play, physical exercise, spending time in nature, communication, art, and calming music. Help your child identify which strategies work best in each Zone.
  • The Helping Hand Metaphor: Teach your child to recognise the people who can support them in navigating different Zones. This could be you, a teacher, a school counsellor or a trusted adult.

Buddy Picnic

In week 5 we again celebrated Buddy Time across the Junior Campus. It is always heart-warming to watch our classes across the Junior Campus come together and share time and conversation over lunch. There was much laughter, music, chalk drawing and many more fun ways that our students connected.

Buddy time is an incredibly important peer to peer support network that is bult into our wellbeing practice at Redlands. Not only do the older children provide a positive role model example for younger students, but it also provides an opportunity to learn to listen to others, respect and embrace our differences as well as a chance to have fun together.

A bit thanks you to Mrs Clinton for organising this again and empowering our students to be respectful of each other.

School Readiness

As we enter progress further into the year, many families are starting to think about the following year, and considering if their child is “school ready”. This is a hot topic in the media, in playgrounds all over Australia: Should you hold your child back a year and allow them to enter school at an older age than their classmates?

A global trend in education has seen parents lean towards holding their children back, with research showing little academic benefit in starting early and considerable benefits in starting late. Psychologist Dr Amanda Mergler published an article in the Australasian Journal of Early Childhood. She found the proportion of parents holding children back until they turned six almost doubled in the last 5 years. It has been reported that in New South Wales the proportion of parents holding back could be as high as 22 percent.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when making this important decision: How close a child is to the cut-off age, maturity of the child, social and emotional maturity, impacts in the later years, financial pressures and the parent’s own school experience. Your class teacher is a good reference point. They see how your child works in a group learning space, as opposed to being taught individually. Group work demands skills such as concentration and on task behaviour focus.

Some would say you’re not actually holding them back, you’re actually giving them a head start, as when they begin school they will be older, more mature and more ready than they would have been.

Juniors to Seniors

To clarify the process for new families who have children moving from Juniors to Seniors in the coming year. Children stay in their class, with the same group of children for the Senior year. In the Senior year they will attend 3 days a week as follows:

  • Orange Class Seniors  – Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday
  • Yellow Class Seniors  –  Monday/ Tuesday/ Wednesday
  • Blue Class Seniors     –  Monday/ Tuesday/ Wednesday

Professional Support – NDIS

If you have concerns about your child’s development, we can connect you to the right supports. We can help children younger than 7 and their families, access the right support, when they need it. It’s about giving children with developmental delay or disability, and their families, supports so children can have the best possible start in life.

Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis to get help. If you have concerns about your child’s development, talking to a professional who knows your child best is a good place to start. This could be your class teacher, child’s doctor, or child health nurse. Concerns about your child’s development might include how they: play and move around, do things to take care of themselves, socialise with other children, or communicate what they want. Please speak to your class teacher or Mrs Huon if you have any questions.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through a note requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 3 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Secondary Sport

Sport plays a crucial role in the development of adolescents, offering numerous benefits beyond physical fitness. It is a powerful tool that builds resilience and teamwork, instilling essential life skills that contribute to their overall growth and well-being. Engaging in sports helps adolescents develop resilience by exposing them to challenges and setbacks. They learn to face adversity, cope with failures, and bounce back stronger. Whether it’s losing a game or facing a tough opponent, sports teach them the importance of perseverance, determination, and the ability to overcome obstacles. These experiences build resilience, enabling adolescents to handle future difficulties with confidence and resilience. Athletes learn to work together towards a common goal, developing the understanding and significance of effective communication, cooperation, and trust, which are essential not just on the field but also in various aspects of life. By collaborating with teammates, adolescents discover the power of collective effort and the value of supporting and relying on others. As Michael Jordan, the renowned basketball player, once said, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” This quote emphasises the significance of teamwork and highlights how success in sports, as well as in life, relies not solely on individual talent but on the ability to work together harmoniously. Through facing challenges and setbacks, they develop resilience, allowing them to face future obstacles with confidence.

This week in the ‘what sport meant to me’ we hear from one of the newest members of the Redlands Sports Department, Georgina Ford. George, the Redlands Director of Netball has a wealth of knowledge and experience within sport.

What sport meant to me? – Georgina Ford (Director of Netball)

Sport to me has always means being part of something bigger than myself. It has always been a part of my life, something I was exposed to early on and something that was never not there for me. My father lost his left leg to cancer at 26 yrs old, so I have never seen him with 2 legs. He was a successful rugby player and long jumper prior to this.

Somewhere along the way sport in our family became about showing him what we could do that he now couldn’t, it wasn’t a sad thing, it wasn’t a chore, it was more about giving him joy watching my sisters and I play and develop a love of what he could now not do.

When I was younger, I was quite a good swimmer (for a minute!) It was hard the hours were long and the training lonely before and after school.  I missed out on the ‘cool’ things my friends were doing after school and for a while felt resentment towards my training and hours away from the cool kids.

However, I know years later these many hours looking at the black line at the bottom of the pool built in me a commitment and dedication that I have bought to my life today, to my marriage and my parenting.

I also played a lot of yes, you guessed, it NETBALL! This is where I found my love of sport, my love of being with friends, going to long weekend carnivals, stage age championships, sleep overs before carnivals, sleep over after carnivals and yes, I loved the trainings too- this was the FUN stuff. It did help that I had some hand eye coordination and was tall for my age as I progressed through the successful pathways offered.

It is now lovely to be able to give back my knowledge and love of the game to all here at Redlands. Sport can help shape who you are, you don’t have to be great- you just need to enjoy it. I am a far better netball coach than I was a player – but that’s ok with me as this has shaped who I am, given our family an expat life and I know my children have this same love for friendship and comradery in their sport.  Sport has shaped how I parent my 3 children and I know it will resonate with them one day the joy you can have watching your children do something they love and really want to do.

‘Excellence is never an accident. It is the results of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution. It represents the wisest option among many alternatives. Choice, not chance, determines your destiny, dreams and values’

Football

We are now past the half way point of the regular season for ISA Football. If you would like to see where your team is currently placed on the ladder please head to the isa website –  There is one Round remaining this term (Round 7) on Saturday 17th June before we break for the school holidays. All students will have their normal training sessions on Tuesday 13th June following the long weekend.

Congratulations to those students who were named in the team of the week for Round 6!

Hockey

It was a very foggy morning for our Hockey cohort at Barker College on Saturday. The Junior Girls were up first and with a close first half, it was proving to be one of the toughest games the team have had to date this season. However, in the second half our girls came out firing and finished the game with a convincing 5-1 win over Barker, cementing their spot in first place on the ladder. Our goal scorers for the game were Sahara (3), Ava (1) and Jasmine (1). The 1st Girls were up next against Barker 1st in what has become a healthy rivalry between the two schools. After a fantastic first half, the Redlands 1st Girls were up 2-0 at half time. Barker came out with a point to prove after the half time break and soon enough had managed to tie the game, and a final goal from Barker saw the game end with a 3-2 lead in their favour. Despite not getting the win, it was a fantastic game by the Redlands 1st Girls and they have shown that they can compete at the level of the top teams in the competition. A special shoutout to Remie who stepped up as goalkeeper and did a fantastic job with the regular goalkeeper out sick.

We have one final round this term on Saturday 17 June before we break for the school holidays. All students will have their normal training sessions on Tuesday 13 June following the long weekend.

Netball

Inter F’s played a strong game with only 5 to start but Ruby Gasmus from the Junior C’s kindly joined the team and played for them for a half. The team worked really hard and were in the mix against CCGS for a while but, unfortunately there was an injury and  the Inter F’s were back to 5 for the last half. They persevered, never gave up and I was impressed their comradery and resilience. Here they are here, still smiling after the loss.  Well done girls!

The Inter D team had 2 back to back wins at Chev with the majority of the team only just returning from a week of camp- super effort girls.  Sleep ins are overrated!

The Inter A’s & B’s also had a great win at Chev. The Second VII had a close game with just a loss by 2. There were some other great wins by Junior teams too, so pleasing to see ! Our Firsts had a tough game and fought hard but didn’t get the win but showed great focus and strength.

Week by week , each team is just getting better and better and the teamwork and friendships between teams are growing. I spoke about helping others last week if teams were short and the girls have definitely stepped up- when asked to help others, they jump up and say yes- this is so great to see, thank you girls.

It was with pleasure that I received an email about the calm and constructive coaching style by one of our coaches this weekend of the Junior Gs’, Jacquie Gray. A snapshot of the feedback is listed below. Well done Jacquie and thank you to all our dedicated coaches who continue to work hard with the girls week in week out. Their dedication and commitment to their teams is abundantly clear.

“I only felt gratitude for the calm, civilised and respectful way in which the entire Redlands crew handled themselves this morning. I could hear only positive messages to our girls from Jackie. “ What a wonderful netball community we have at Redlands.

Our “Top Trainers” last week were for great attitudes, punctuality, consistent effort and hard work were:

Bronte Backhouse, Eva Simpson, Sophia Liu, Sasha Rowe, Lily Wainberg, Alba Martin- Gomez, Georgia Cavric, Ava Field, Ava Taylor, Audrey Kwok, Sabine Murray, Indi Hindmarsh, Freya Kittle, Remy Morriss, Ruby Wood, Eva Fitzhenry, Aneke Golowenko and Tara Ward.

Here are are your Junior H team who are all mostly new to netball , had a loss but are  always smiling and wanting to do better???? each week.

Georgina Ford
Director of Coaching Netball

Rugby

Weekly recap:

Our game of the week was the 14’s fixture. The Redlands boys put on a clinic, scoring some of the best tries we’ve seen this season. Unlucky to go down on the scoreboard in the last 2 minutes, the boys put up a great fight against the undefeated CCGS side. A highlight of the game, Charlie Reeves kick through and regather to run 50m and score, as well as Hector Maxwells carry off a penalty that saw him charge about 30m down field.

We are proud of the continued fighting spirit demonstrated this season by all teams.

Players of the week as nominated by coaches:

  • 13s: Hamish Hopkins
  • 14s: Charlie Reeves
  • 15s: Zac Griffin
  • 1sts: Josh Hicks

Looking ahead:

  • Friday 16 June – Friends of Rugby Dinner. Please RSVP to your year group parent.
  • Saturday 17 June – BMGS home game against Chev. Last game for the term!
