Head of Sport
The Football World Cup always provides an exciting battle between nations great and small – watching teams filled with professional Football superstars earning millions being defeated by teams of amateurs who have worked two jobs and paid for their own flights to get the opportunity just to take the field. The beauty of this type of competition is that it tears away the preconceptions people have of more talent and more money will equal more success.
I liken this to the argument we often hear in school. That the bigger the school and bigger the funding, the more success. School sport can not be as simple as that though, or else there would be a linear relationship with enrolment size and trophy quantities.
It is not a magic formula, where bigger is better. A critical challenge is one of quality control. It is more difficult to ensure that a large number of students have a positive experience than a small number. Beyond the critical mass needed to maintain a high performance program, larger student populations make demands on resources that can stretch the capacity of an organisation to deliver quality.
Much more important than size is the culture within the school. A strong sporting culture has always been able to thrive in relatively small schools. This is often an inconspicuous quality that can take a long time to build.
Sport has never been important to all children. But the proportion who are inspired by physical challenge, and who want to engage and strive to improve, varies enormously between schools, nor does this correlate closely with school type. Big, small, boarding, day, urban, rural, academic and otherwise: all can have a strong culture where it is popular to be fit and active, and sports teams are important and valued. A weak sporting culture is one where pupils pursue a more selfish agenda and don’t develop perseverance towards difficult long term goals. These schools often blame external factors for the decline of sports and envy schools with their larger pupil numbers, believing this would solve all problems.
The most important thing a school can have in sport is a strong culture of participation. Aspiration, commitment, selflessness and teamwork all emerge from this. Culture is far more difficult to build and far more significant than resources such as facilities. There are no shortcuts, and no magic formulas. Sport must and should be a positive experience. Motivated students drive each other on, and develop each day in an environment where effort is important and the process then becomes to be understood as being more important than the outcome. These are the foundations of school sport success, and attempts to categorise competitive standards entirely on enrolment size is false. Culture is always king!
Athletics
We had a fantastic day out at the Secondary School Athletics Carnival, congratulations to Dumolo for winning the House Shield. It was great to see all of the House Captains encouraging all members of their Houses to participate.
Congratulations to Emma Mahon (Yr 9) who broke two records yesterday, the 1500m record with a blistering time of 5:04.64, which took just over 13 seconds from the previous record set back in 2000. Emma also broke the 800m record with a scintillating time of 2:27.82, breaking a record which has stood since 1998 of 2:29.31. Congratulations also to Alexandra York (Yr 10) who broke the Intermediate Girls Long Jump record with a jump of 5.36m. The following are the Age Champions and Runners Up:

Football
Round 7 was set to be a huge round for Redlands Football. Unfortunately, with the ground closure of Macquarie University Fields we could no longer host any home games. We had a number of teams meet in Lang Gym and play a mini World Cup. It was a lot of fun for the students in attendance, and there were some extremely competitive, exciting Futsal games.
Oakhill were willing to host our 1st XI Boys Football team so the game could still go ahead. Giving up an early lead of 0-2 to Oakhill, it was going to be tough for our team to fight back and get the win. A goal from Captain, Michael Moore saw the score at 1-2, however another goal to Oakhill had Redlands going into half time down 1-3. Our Redlands team came out strong in the second half, and with another goal, the score line at 3-2. Having two more shots on goal, we were in with a chance to tie the game but unfortunately couldn’t capitalise on the opportunities. Credit to our 1st XI Boys, they played a great game and have shown great improvement across the season.
We look forward to seeing all of our teams back in action in Term 3.
Netball
A huge thank you to those who came down to NBISC on Saturday in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia fundraising. It was great to see so much pink around the Netball courts. We had some great results with our 1st VII, Inter A and Junior B teams having strong wins against St Paul’s Grammar School. Our Senior 2nds and Senior 4th unfortunately went down to Chevalier College, and our Senior 3rds who are showing some great form towards the back end of the season, also went down to Oakhill College.
A reminder that the NSNA Competition still runs this weekend (Saturday 30 June).
We are still seeking interest for the Giants vs Fever Netball clash on Saturday 4 August at the ICC, Darling Harbour with the game starting at 7pm. We are opening this opportunity up to all players and parents and the cost will be charged to your School account. Tickets are approximately $30 per person. If you would like to attend this excursion, please register by contacting the Director of Netball Coaching, Annie Stalley, by Monday 3 July.
Redlands Fitness Centre
Please be aware that the Fitness Centre will be open throughout the Winter holiday period. The opening hours will be from 8-10am and if you wish to access the Gym through these hours, you will need to email Mr Gooding directly so that he can place you on the roster.
Rugby
Our 1st XV had a slow start to play for the first ten minutes due to a very muddy pitch as each team fought to build possession and put pressure on the oppositions defence. Restricted by numerous penalties, the game began to build as Redlands were caught in their half with CCGS putting on two quick unconverted tries and Redlands being guilty of forcing the pass and not maintaining possession. After the second CCGS try, we woke up a bit in attack and began to put together some phases in attack, led brilliantly by some wonderful runs. All this build up allowed for a few breaks in the CCGS defensive line with Redlands scoring a brilliant try which was quickly converted. Halftime 10-7 CCGS.
The second half was brutal, with both teams putting some huge shots on in defence. With little possession and still plagued by penalties, Redlands were still able to make some head roads into the CCGS half and with an amazing interval of 20 plus phases were able to score a well worked team try. We started to break them more and more through their defensive line and our own defensive efforts were immense. CCGS camped on our line in attack, our defence was tested time and time again eventually on the bell being beaten on the wing. A wonderful win for Redlands 21-17.
Tennis
Last week Redlands played Oakhill College. Our 1sts team won in impressive fashion with a 6-2 victory. The 2nds had a very hard day and ran out of time to secure the win, going down 3-4. The 3rds went down 3-5. The 4ths produced another good performance and were able to secure another great victory 6-2. I wish everyone happy holidays and we will be back at training on Tuesday 24 July (first day back of Term 3).
Touch Football
Congratulations to Alexandra York who was selected in the Combined Independent Schools U15 Touch Football Team (CIS).
Waterpolo
We had some mixed results at the Waterpolo Grand Finals on Friday night. Our Open A Boys took on the Pittwater 10/11 team. Some strong attaching raids helped Redlands jump out to a 2-0 lead, Pittwater fought back to square it up at 2-2 at half time. The second half saw a change in momentum with Pittwater scoring 2 early goals to take a 2-4 lead. Redlands tried to fight back but seemed to be out of puff by the final quarter. Pittwater held onto their advantage and controlled possession and ended up taking the victory 4-5. The boys should be extremely proud of their efforts with a number of players improving greatly over season!
Our Open A Girls came into this fixture on the back of a strong regular season, however with a number of players taking part in the Senior Music Festival, the girls knew playing with only 7 would be tough. The girls looked to dominate early and then control the ball which is what they did. Wenona looked to move the ball around and tire out the girls, which kept them into the contest, until early in the 4th quarter where Redlands dominated early again jumping out to a 3 goal lead. It was great to see the girls work well together with a number of them being new to Waterpolo this year. They were led by some of the senior girls to maintain possession and hold Wenona off to take the match 10-7.
