Issue 20 2018 - 28 Jun 2018

From the Principal

Sandra and I enjoyed another wonderful Senior Music Festival last Friday evening at The Concourse, Chatswood. The program was extremely diverse and the standard of the individual performances was consistently high. It was a truly elevating ending to the week.

The first three pieces were very skillfully programmed, starting with J S Bach’s well-known Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. This was followed by a pulsating performance of Japanese drumming. The third piece was terrifically exciting and moving: Baba Yetu, a Swahili translation of The Lord’s Prayer, composed by Christopher Tin, was sung by the Combined Choirs with selected soloists and accompanied by the double strings quartet and percussion ensembles of the first two items. The Intermediate Jazz ensemble carried the audience into the intermission with a fun-filled performance which included an opportunity for all the musicians to step forward in pairs to play short improvisations, as though they were performing a Latin American dance. The overall program included opportunities for Year 12 Music students to perform pieces which they will play as part of their coming examination performances. The second half of the program was unified by wonderful arrangements of The Beatles music, which took me back to my student days as a fan of their music. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band provided a fantastic finale, with the Year 12 students singing, dancing and playing instruments on the stage and supported by the rest of the Music students singing in the gallery.

We must congratulate Coordinator of Music, Mr Darren Kuilenburg, his Music teachers, tutors and accompanists, and all the support staff and friends who contributed to this year’s Senior Music Festival.

The final week of term has included another visit from Mr Mark Church who continues to work with our academic staff as they continue to learn more about the Harvard-based Cultures of Thinking and Learning model. This time it was a number of Junior Campus teachers who had an opportunity to undertake learning walks into the classrooms of their Senior Campus colleagues and to observe and then discuss what they have witnessed of the model in practice in the Secondary School. Mark continued his work with a group of middle academic leaders after lunch in reporting on progress in the Action Research activities, which are being carried out across this year. Finally, Mark met with all the Junior Campus teachers to explore and understand that the goal is not to simply use Thinking Routines in teaching but to use what they learn from making students’ thinking visible to help them plan for what thinking by their students do they wish to make routine.

The Secondary School annual House Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday in sunshine that smiled on the event amid the dark clouds which book-ended that day. The day was a well-balanced mix of high level competition and strong participation and House spirit. Congratulations to Dumolo upon their win on the day and thank you to staff and students who helped manage the day.

Tomorrow evening the Year 12 Formal will be a great finale for the term, before they lead into preparations for their Trial Examinations early in Term 3. I do wish them all the best for these important examinations and also urge them to make sure that they plan their break to allow themselves time to relax as well, especially by maintaining physical wellbeing through exercise and a healthy diet and not spending too much time chained to their devices. This last advice I also offer to all students during the mid-year break. It is a great time to recharge batteries following a busy first semester.

Foundation

Thank You

A very big thank you to all our families who have made a donation to the Redlands Foundation in this financial year. Donations play a vital role in the School’s further development and allow the School to invest in areas that are important for our students and staff. The tax receipts will be posted via mail to postal addresses. In case you have changed your postal address, can you please get in touch with the Foundation Office.

Culture of Giving

Many of our current facilities are used by our students and staff thanks to the support of our previous generations. We are very fortunate at Redlands that we have a long history of community that recognises the importance of supporting the School by making a donation, volunteering their time or leveraging their corporate tights.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

The purpose of the Yr 12 Legacy Gift is to make a long lasting legacy to our School, for many years to come after they have finished Yr 12. The Class of 2018 Legacy Gift initiative is a wonderful way for the Yr 12 cohort to refer to and reflect upon in the future when they return to Redlands as Alumni for reunions and community events.

Thank you to Elizabeth Lee (Yr 12), Mr Castelli, Mr Atkins and the Legacy Gift Committee for organising and running a very successful Pizza Stall last Thursday. The stall made over $500 which will be dedicated towards this gift.

The Redlands Spring Fair

Saturday 15 September, 9am–3pm, Junior School Campus

The Redlands Spring Fair is an exciting event which welcomes over 2,000 visitors to our School to enjoy action packed rides, key performances from our talented students, delicious food representing our International families and home-made jams and cakes made by our Old Girls.

Financial proceeds generated by the Spring Fair will be dedicated to the outdoor equipment across both campuses. The Foundation Office is seeking corporate sponsors to support selected stalls and prizes for the raffle. If you can help in any form, please contact Jenni De Jager (9908 6484) or visit the Spring Fair website.

Pink Sock Round

Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer for our Redlands@Home, Pink Sock Charity Round. The response was heartwarming and we were all disappointed that the wet week meant the grounds were closed and the day was cancelled. Not all was lost however, as a BBQ was held on both the JS and SS campuses on Monday which raised $600 for BCNA and the eggs and bacon are in storage, ready for the Yr 10 sleepout breakfast this Friday morning. Everyone should be proud of how the Sports Department, Service Coordinator and Dean of Activities worked together to both reschedule so many games and make this all happen with such short notice.

Book Club

The Book Club has finished meeting for this term. Our first meeting for next term is on Wednesday 1 August when we will be discussing The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. Our second book for Term 3 is Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. Contact Samantha at sli12@bigpond.net.au

Decluttering over the July holidays?  We can help! We will be accepting donations for Spring Fair on Saturday 1 September. If you have excellent quality and clean Action and Toddler toys, Board Games, puzzles, pre-loved clothes and gently used books, we’d love you to donate them on the day. Look out for more details for Donation Day in Term 3.

Over 600 Jars of Jam Ready for Spring Fair!

Parents, teachers, children, family and friends all happily participated in our two jam making sessions held in Term 2 led by a qualified Jam Maker!  It was lots of fun with a great result creating around 600 jars of jams to be sold at the Spring Fair (including marmalade, lemon curd and lemon and passionfruit curd). Thank you everyone for donating your time and for being so industrious! Look out for our final Jam Making Session in Term 3!

A Big Thank You to Our Volunteers!

The Spring Fair Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you all the parents/carers who have assisted and supported the Fair so far, in particular those who are part of their Year Level Stall Coordination teams. It is only with enthusiastic and committed parents/carers like yourself that the Spring Fair will be a success!

House Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday 26 June, all of the Secondary School were at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre for our House Athletics Carnival. There were some excellent individual results on the track and in the field with school records broken by Emma Mahon (Yr 9) and Alexandra York (Yr 10). I would also like to recognise the following Division Champions:

  • Junior Girls: Emilie Bessell
  • Junior Boys: Joshua Hicks & Sebastien Griffith (shared)
  • Intermediate Girls: Alexandra York
  • Intermediate Boys: Jonah Kloppers
  • Senior Girls: Anna Jackson
  • Senior Boys: Cameron Pascoe

There was also great House Spirit on display throughout the day (exemplified by some of the Yr 12 outfits) and congratulations to Dumolo for taking out the House Shield. Most impressively, students were able to have the proper balance of competitive spirit and fun throughout the day.

Staffing

To maintain proper communication, I wanted to inform you of some staffing updates for Term 3. Sadly, Ms Holly Peck will be leaving us at the end of this term to return to the UK. In her year at Redlands, she has had a significant positive impact on students and has been a valued member of the Science Department. We welcome Ms Lorna Wooley to the Science Department who will be picking up Ms Peck’s classes for the remainder of the year and has most recently been teaching at St Augustine’s College. Mrs Elizabeth Scott will be going on Long Service Leave in Term 3 and Ms Sarah Simpson, who has most recently been teaching at Pymble Ladies’ College, will be taking her classes for this term. Ms Emma Bergin will also be going on Long Service Leave in Term 3. Mr David Newling, who has most recently been teaching at Cranbrook, will be joining the HSIE Department in Term 3. In addition, for this upcoming term Mr Eddy Atkins will step into the role of Acting Yr 10 Year Advisor and Ms Kristen Privett will be Acting Yr 10 Assistant Year Advisor. Finally, with Mr Nick Walker taking on the role of Yr 9 Assistant Year Advisor earlier this term, Ms Amy Richardson has stepped into the role of Acting House Mentor of Cowper House, leading the Cowper team at Tuesday’s House Athletics Carnival.

Reports

By the end of Term 2, all parents across Yrs 7-12 will have received Semester 1 Reports on their child’s progress over the first half of the year. In line with our focus on growth mindsets, we hope they provide timely, quality and useful feedback on student progress and performance to date, whilst also giving strategies for future growth and improvement. We have tried to align Reports with Parent Teacher nights where possible so that parents can discuss specific aspects of the Reports during these meetings. Where this is not possible, parents should contact class teachers or Tutors with any other specific questions. We hope that parents have an opportunity to read through these Reports with their child over the holidays to assist them in the development of goals and areas of focus for the second half of the year. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on the feedback from their Reports with their Tutors on the first day back at school in Term 3 on Tuesday 24 July.

Vinnies Sleep Out

Tonight, approximately 130 Yr 10 students will be joined by a number of staff members braving the cold in the Vinnies School Sleep Out in support of the St Vincent De Paul Society. This Pastoral Care initiative aims to further develop student awareness and empathy for the issues surrounding homelessness. The students will also be raising funds for Taldumande, a local Youth Crisis Centre, and also Orange Sky Laundry, who provide support to the homeless on the streets of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. While one evening out in the cold in no way can replicate the daily struggles our homeless community faces, I hope it will allow our students to gain a little more appreciation for what we have and maybe develop a little more empathy for those who have far less.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Yr 9 students, Theo Mirrlees-Black and Tylor Wessels, who have achieved outstanding results in the UNSW Programming Competition. This event was a demanding two hour online computer programming competition, and they placed 17th out of 202 schools Australia-wide for all divisions. In the Intermediate division (Yrs 9 and 10) they placed 3rd out of 75 schools – an outstanding result!

Also, congratulations to George Murphy (Yr 9) who has been awarded with an Emerging Talent Scholarship from Ski and Snowboard Australia in Freestyle, Mogul Skiing. The program is designed to recognise and support talented and emerging athletes such as George towards a high performance pathway and we wish him all the best in his upcoming competitions.

Term 2 Review

It has been a very busy term for students and teachers in the Secondary School with a vast array of academic, pastoral and cocurricular activities taking place. It has been a pleasure and an honour to see so many members of our community shine in so many different ways this term. It has also been a very challenging term for our community and I would like to once again express my gratitude for the continued support from the wider Redlands community. I will send a communication home towards the end of the holidays updating the Secondary School community on upcoming events and initiatives for Term 3. I hope students and parents can spend some quality time relaxing with family and friends during this mid-year break.

Careers

Class of 2017 Returns to Speak to Yr 12

Adam McNeil, Tom MacDonald, Natasha Perrett, Katie Treasure, Greta Argyropolous and Chloe Li shared their experiences with the Yr 12 cohort during the Monday Tutor period. They were chosen as they could provide perspectives on studying at different universities, private colleges, interstate, living at college, how elite athlete/scholarship programs have benefited them so far and what happens if you don’t enjoy your course and decide to take a Gap Year. There was a great deal of sound advice and reflections on the reality of tertiary study but overall the feeling was that this was a really enjoyable time of their lives and they were happy with their chosen paths.

Design Portfolio Workshops

Raffles College at Parramatta are offering interested Yrs 10-12 students an opportunity to work on a portfolio for a range of design and photography areas. Cost is $20 and will be held during the holidays on 9-11 July. Register: here and use the code YR12PROMO to get the $20 offer.

Service

Redlands Sleepout

Yr 10 Redlands Sleepout is happening tonight. Students have been encouraged to seek sponsorship for participating in the event. We are supporting a local Youth Crisis centre, Taldumande, and also Orange Sky Laundry who provide support to the homeless on the streets of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Students have been encouraged to dress warmly and BYO some cardboard boxes for protection.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations

We are seeking donations for the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and support services to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. These services can include nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical assistance. Redlands teachers and students from Yr 11 attend the Hostel every Monday morning to assist with breakfast service. At this time of the year we collect donations to help through the winter months. We are looking for new items of underwear such and socks and thermals along with toiletries like shampoo, hand sanitiser, deodorant and moisturiser. Each Tutor Group has been issued with a collections box and challenged to fill it to the brim. Students can bring in donations any time before the holidays and also in the first few weeks of Term 3.

Pastoral Care

This week our guest speakers were students from the Class of 2017. They offered valuable and realistic insight into life after school. Each Redlander had a different experience and perspective to offer. From gap years and cadetships to combined degrees and full time work, their message was clear – you are so close to something fantastic! Thank you to Greta Argyropoulos, Chloe Li, Tom MacDonald, Adam McNeil, Natasha Perrett and Katie Treasure for offering their time and honest reflections in order to assist our Year Group.

Legacy Gift

Each Tutor Group has been asked to raise $150 in aid of our Legacy Gift which will be a rooftop sustainable garden and composting unit placed on top of the new Science Centre. The pizza sale last week was a success so the fundraising effort of the Year Group is in full swing.

Athletics Carnival

We were proud to see Yr 12 take a day away from the books to compete at their final Redlands Athletics Carnival. There was much laughter and participation with some unexpected results in track and field events. Natascha Barac suddenly discovered her javelin prowess after all these years while Stella Everett shocked even herself with her overall result as Age Runner Up. Congratulations to all students, with particular thanks to our House Captains for their leadership and creative themes this year. For full and individual results, please see the Sports section.

Thank You

We wish to thank all parents for their stoic support and care throughout this term. Term 2 has tested the resilience and bonds of every student, parent, tutor and teacher of Yr 12. It is truly humbling and also a relief to be part of the tight knit community that has been created by the families that form the Class of 2018. We wish you all the best over the break and encourage the students to consolidate their notes, to work consistently, to independently reflect on their direction and most importantly – to look after themselves. If they can take the time to form a clear picture of how they would like their final term to pan out, they can begin setting it up during the three week break.

Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival is always a very enjoyable event to see the enthusiasm and energy from our boys and girls. Their excellent participation and positive spirit has been widely commented on by various staff and parents.

Leadership Process

Just a reminder that the student self-nomination forms for leadership positions are due 4.00pm on Friday 29 June.

Yr 11 Camp

The preparation for Yr 11 Camp will commence at the start of Term 3. For this Camp, students will have the choice of activities. All parents are reminded to update their child’s medical information on Redlands Pulse during the holidays. This would facilitate the organisation of the paperwork required for this Camp.

Academic Flags

If your child receives an academic flag, please note:

  • This is not a punishment if a student receives a Flag. This is a form of support for everybody associated with the academic progress of Yr 11 students.
  • Our intention is to stimulate informed and supportive discussions during Tutor Time and at home to assist students to catch-up in their subject areas.
  • This is by no means a supplement for the Student Planner, nor a comprehensive overview of upcoming assessment tasks. It is merely an outline of areas that require immediate attention in order to meet the requirements of a particular course at any point.
  • It is vital that students take responsibility for their own learning by contacting their teachers themselves if they feel the information in the database is inaccurate.
  • If they are feeling overwhelmed, they are encouraged to contact their Tutors, Ms Shorter and myself immediately.
  • If you request further information, please contact the subject teacher of your child directly.
Holidays

We wish all students and families a happy and safe holiday. We are looking forward to welcoming back all students on Tuesday 24 July.

The Young Men’s Health Forum

Last Friday Mr Atkins and 15 of our Yr 10 boys spent the day at the Young Men’s Health Forum in Chatswood. The boys were joined by students from 15 other schools from the Northern Sydney area discussing current issues and topics affecting young men in today’s society. Conviction Group provided many great speakers throughout the day. Our students were regularly grouped together with students from other schools to talk about topics such as mental health, drugs and alcohol.

Return to School Term 3

Mr Corcoran will be sending a letter to all parents in the upcoming holidays outlining the school’s uniform guidelines. Could we ask that all families familiarise themselves with the school’s uniform policy and return to school with the correct uniform, including haircuts for boys and appropriate skirt length for girls, with nail polish and jewellery removed.

Year 9

Mr Walker and I would like to extend our best wishes to Yr 9 students and their families for a well-deserved end of Semester break. It is, without doubt, that students are ready for some much needed R&R after such a busy term. We hope the three week break will allow students time to re-energise and spend time with family and friends.

Yr 9 Commerce Market Day

Congratulations to all of our Yr 9 students who worked together to raise $2,041.80 at the Yr 9 Commerce Market Day. $1374.85 will be donated to Assistance Dogs Australia, the charitable cause selected by our students. $666.95 in expenses and company tax which was collected will go to the School’s Scholarship Fund. It is fantastic to see significant funds going to both these meaningful causes. A special thank you to Mr Michael Warrell for his organisation of Market Day.

Student Achievements

Theo Mirrlees-Black and Tylor Wessels (both Yr 9) have achieved outstanding results in the UNSW Programming Competition. This was a demanding two hour online computer programming activity. They came 17th out of 202 schools Australia wide for all divisions. In the Intermediate division (Yrs 9 and 10) they came 3rd out of 75 schools. Most teams also had three members but in this case Theo and Tylor represented Redlands as a formidable duo. We warmly congratulate Theo and Tylor for this significant achievement.

George Murphy (Yr 9) has been awarded the ETS (Emerging Talent Scholarship) from Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA). The Ski and Snowboard Australia ETS program has been designed to recognise and support talented, emerging athletes. As a high potential athlete, George has been recognised amongst a special group of Australian snowsport athletes. Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) Emerging Talent Scholarships are difficult to obtain and offered only to athletes identified as having the capability of contributing to Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE) targets in the future. It is our pleasure to congratulate George on this significant acknowledgement.

Year 8

Congratulations to everyone for their participation and success at this year’s Redlands Athletics Carnival. It was a fantastic day with some outstanding results across all events. Dumolo won the House Cup, however, there was not a huge difference in points, especially when looking at participation. Thank you to all of the staff who helped make it such a fantastic day, and most importantly, the Sports Department whose tireless work ’behind the scenes’ never goes unnoticed. Congratulations on your fine efforts Yr 8.

Kyle Banfield (and Sebastian Tang Yr 7) have both been working on a series being produced by Beyond Productions called Wow, That’s Amazing (a children’s Science TV series) which has been shooting in various suburbs all around Sydney over the past year. Kyle and Seb have been filmed acting out a number of Science experiments with other children, then preparing voice-overs in a sound studio afterwards. The series will be first aired in Germany later this year, it’s not due to be released in Australia until mid 2019 on the ABC. Kyle has had so much fun with this project and has learnt a lot!

Announcements

This week we bid farewell to Ella Palmet, Charlotte Eade and Quentin Renaud, as they move back to be with family in the USA, UK and France (respectively). Ella, Charlotte and Quentin will be missed by Yr 8 and we wish them and their families a safe return, and the best of luck in their new homes and schools.

Wednesday 8 August (Term 3, Week 3) – Yr 8 Parent Teacher Night. Booking information will be emailed to parents before the event.

As this is the last Note Day for Term 2, Ms Mountain and I wish everyone a happy and restful holiday break. We would like to thank all of our Yr 8 families for their support this term and in particular, our Parent Coordinators. We have been very proud of the achievements of our Yr 8 students this term and look forward to hearing about all the holiday adventures on return in Term 3.

Year 7

Term 2 Reflections

I can’t believe we are at the end of Term 2 and half way through the year already! It has been another eventful term. This term, our Pastoral Care program assisted students with developing good personal habits which will hopefully establish strong foundations for their choices through high school and beyond. At this point students should be able to:

  1. Recognise how they can take responsibility for their choices
  2. Define their personal goals
  3. Prioritise, and do the most important things first.

Our students have also been busy little bees involved in many activities. Key events in Term 2 included NAPLAN, Gala Arts, Cross Country (ISA and CIS), Senior Music Festival, Senior Athletics Carnival… the list goes on! We wish you all a happy and safe holiday and look forward to welcoming students back in Term 3.

Reports

Semester 1 Reports will be sent to families these holidays. Please contact your child’s teachers regarding any subject specific queries. Parent Teacher Interviews (see Key Dates below) will also provide a good opportunity to discuss progress. Tutors are happy to assist with any general inquiries or administrative issues.

The holiday break is well deserved and will provide a good opportunity for students to reflect on their progress and Semester 1 Report. Students will start next semester meeting with their Tutor to reflect on their progress, evaluate Term 2 goals and plan for Term 3.

As Reports are received, we’re encouraging students to consider the relationship between results and their Approach to Learning. Another way in which parents can get regular updates on student progress is to read the teacher feedback when assessments are handed back. This provides a fantastic opportunity to consider areas of strengths and areas needing more attention.

Credit Point Prize Draw

On Friday we will recognise the efforts of Yr 7 in our Credit Point Prize Draw. Students receive one entry into the draw for each Credit Point they have earned throughout the term. Students also receive an entry for each event they competed in at the Athletics Carnival. We have an extraordinary amount of entries this term and we are super proud of the efforts of Yr 7 in demonstrating wonderful examples of the Redlands Values in class and the wider community.

Kanga Cup

Best wishes to Sebastien Griffith, Joe Irvine, Ethan McFarlane and Finn Woodward all of whom are competing in Kanga Cup 2018. As mentioned in Week 8 Note Day, the Kanga Cup is the largest International Youth Football Tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. Held annually each July in Canberra, the week-long event proudly champions the mission of Uniting the Youth of the World through Football. All boys, along with Madison Barwise, were recognised in our Year Meeting in Week 8.

SRC

Thank you to Sebastien Griffith, Jessica Marshall, Oliver Noakes and Koko Sawa who served as Yr 7 members of the Student Representative Council in Semester 1. They led Yr 7 with grace and provided insight into the needs and wishes of the student body. We wish Nicholas Jackson, Charlotte Scamps, Alyssa Tinetti and Harley van der Pluijm the best of luck as they step into the role for Semester 2.

Athletics Carnival

Well done to all who competed in Tuesday’s Athletics Carnival. It was a fantastic day filled with much House spirit. Well done to Dumolo for winning the House Shield. Notable mention goes to our age champions:

  • U12 Girls Runner-Up (shared): Maya Healey and Sophie McGrath
  • U12 Girls Champion and Junior Girls Champion: Emilie Bessell
  • U12 Boys Runner-Up: Oliver Noakes
  • U12 Boys Champion and Junior Boys Champion (shared): Joshua Hicks
  • U13 Girls Runner-Up: Catarina Croll
  • U13 Boys Runner-Up: Keian Murphy
  • U13 Boys Champion Junior Boys Champion (shared): Sebastien Griffith
Achievements

Please notify me of any student achievements (academic/sporting/performing arts etc) so that we are able to recognise them appropriately either in Note Day or our Year Assembly. Photos are welcome.

NSW Sporting Representatives

Following on from the three Junior School students selected to represent NSW Schools last year, we are very proud to have two more students selected so far this year.

Yr 6 student, Hannah Morton, competes again for NSW in the pool at the Australian Swimming Championships in Hobart over this mid-year break. Hannah was selected for this team last year and will be seeking to also defend some of her National swimming titles in this upcoming competition.

We were also thrilled to hear of Jasmine Black’s (Yr 6) selection to the NSW Schools Girls’ Football team as their goalkeeper for the Australian Schools Championships in September. Jasmine was a standout player for the Combined Independent Schools team at the recent State Championships which led to this State selection.

For both girls, I know that their dedication and commitment to training and practice has led to ongoing improvements and achievements and we congratulate them on this State level of representation.

This week saw Gallery Walks in Yrs 5 and 6 which aim to provide wonderful opportunities for students to showcase their learning to peers and parents. It was wonderful to see every classroom full of parents who were able to join us and the students were visibly enthralled to be able to share their thinking and learning experiences with both peers and adults. My thanks are extended to teachers and students for their planning and time to organise these special events. Next semester, we will hold similar events for Yrs 3 and 4.

Staffing News

I am delighted to confirm that Mrs Shelly Acland will join our Junior School Counselling team next term. Mrs Acland will work three days a week alongside Mrs Kourakis three days as Junior School Counsellor so that we have a student counsellor available every day. Mrs Acland has been working in the Prep School for the last year in a similar role and is known to some Junior School students and families already. I know that between them, Mrs Acland and Mrs Kourakis will bring a strong level of support for students, staff and families in the important area of wellbeing next semester.

At the end of the week, we say thank you and farewell to Mrs Emily Darcy and Mrs Fiona Rugg who have done a sterling job as Long Service Leave replacements for Mr Baugh and Mrs Ling in our Numeracy Learning Plus department. Mrs Darcy will continue her connection with Redlands in the Prep School and will also be part of our casual teaching team and we hope to see Mrs Rugg in this capacity too.

Redlands Snowsports

Over the break, many Redlands students and families will head down to the snow and I extend my best wishes to all of our Junior School students involved in a variety of events and competitions at the snow over the upcoming break. I look forward to getting updates from Mr Carter and hearing of your efforts and successes next term.

Junior Music Festival

Our annual Junior Music Festival takes place in Week 2 of next term at 4.30pm on Thursday 2 August. This is always one of my highlights of our school year with the involvement of each and every Junior School student. Our cocurricular ensembles and curriculum classes have been eagerly rehearsing and will perform a variety of repertoire that will explore a STEAM theme, celebrating our cross-curriculum learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

The event takes place on site in Robert Dunnet Hall with tickets now available via Trybooking. Please note that all cocurricular rehearsals will be cancelled in the week of the Festival (Week 2) in order to facilitate preparation for the concert.

Semester 1 Reports

We are expecting Junior School student reports to be available to parents via the online parent portal Redlands Pulse in the early part of next week. An SMS message will be sent to notify you when they have been uploaded for you to access. Back copies of your son or daughter’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse. To access the reports parents will need their Redlands Pulse username and password. Parents requiring assistance re user name or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Do take some time over the break to read through it with your child and acknowledge and celebrate areas of growth and progress. As students return for Term 3, their class teachers will also spend time looking at aspects of goal-setting for the second semester, which they will share at the Three Way Conferences in Weeks 3 and 4.

Happy Holidays

As we approach the mid-year break, I encourage families to take time for rest and relaxation. As is also the case for our staff, these times away from Redlands are very important for all of us as they then allow us to be at our very best when we are here. Rest, in whatever sense, is different for all of us and I hope that the mid-year break allows you to relax and recharge.

To those of you travelling near or far, I wish you safe travels and we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 24 July.  Please note that the Junior School Office will reopen on Monday 23 July.

Kindergarten Bush School

As Bush School finishes for another year, the Prep staff would like to extend their thanks to the dedicated team of parents who assisted each week to watch over our Kindergarten children while they played and learned. Thank you to Jennie Cadman, Bree Stevens, Jon Carey, Elizabeth Cameron, Holly Buhman, Tiffany Noakes, Natasha Williams, Joe Russo, Tracey Menegazzo, Denby Casey, Jean Martin, Anna Pope and Keith Miller who supported the staff and children. Parent volunteers are essential to the smooth and safe running of this exciting program.

Strings Concert

Congratulations to each and every student involved in the Yr 2 Strings Concert last Monday afternoon. I would like to acknowledge the teachers and students, it is a significant achievement performing to an audience after learning an instrument for only six months. Thank you to Mr Warby and all the Strings teachers for the wonderful effort that has gone into making the Strings program such a success.

Author Visit

Last Thursday, Prep were fortunate to host a special guest at Redlands. Author/illustrator, Sally Rippin, spoke to Yr 1 and Yr 2 students about her journey to become a writer. She emphasised that she started young, about the age they are, making little books for her family and friends. Sally told them about her constant use of a notebook and showed them her current one. Sally then talked about the evolution of her books Billie B. Brown and Hey Jack. We anticipate her latest series Polly and Buster will become a new favourite with the students. I must congratulate the students who showed respectful listening behaviours and their insightful questioning was testament to the high level of engagement during the presentation. A special thanks to the Prep Teacher/Librarian, Mrs Roberts, who organised this event for the students.

“I like your books because they are really funny and when there’s a problem you solve the problem and you describe the characters. I like that if something is wrong in the draft, you keep trying and trying and then you get it right”. Oliver

“Thanks for the amazing tips on writing. Some of us have already started keeping our ideas in a special book. I enjoyed it when you came. Redlands is a very special school to have you come and visit”. Mia

Clubs

Clubs will recommence in Term 3 on Wednesday 1 August. All students and families were given this information at the beginning of the year. Teachers will remind students of their new Club in the first week of Term 3.

Staffing News

Next term, we are delighted to welcome back Mrs Wise who returns to Redlands from her extended maternity leave. A very special thanks must go to Mrs Acland for leading the Early Childhood staff as Prep Counsellor for the past 18 months, offering her wealth of knowledge and expertise to the community. We are so pleased that she will remain at Redlands, assisting the Junior School next semester.

Next term we welcome back Ms Finlayson from Long Service Leave and thank Mrs Barrett for teaching One Silver this term. I would also like to extend my appreciation to Mrs Chipper for taking on the role of Yr 1 Coordinator in Ms Finlayson’s absence.

Thank You

After an industrious Semester, I extend my sincere thanks to all in our community who have contributed to the growth and development of the Preparatory School. I thank the teachers who have placed an enormous amount of effort into the individual needs of the children. It has been wonderful reading through every student’s report to see the gains they have made and this is due to the collaborative efforts of both families and staff. Please do take the time to reflect upon the encouragement teachers have provided students in the General Report comment to reach individual goals for Semester 2. The first iteration of the Canteen Menu has been positive and I thank parents for their supportive feedback. The Finance team and IT department will be diligently working through the holiday period to have the online ordering system ready for Term 3.

It is exciting to see the number of Prep students who will take part in the annual Redlands Cup snowsports event over the last week of the holidays. This year I am looking forward to spending time down in Thredbo and watching the students thrive in another environment. Thank you to those families who give so much of their time to assist the School with this event that has grown significantly in recent years.

For those travelling over the school holiday break, I wish you safe travels. Take time to rest and rejuvenate before Term 3 resumes.

Music

Senior Music Festival

Bach to the Beatles

Last Friday night, Redlands celebrated the artistic and creative achievements of Music students from Yrs 7-12 as they performed in the annual Senior Music Festival at The Concourse, Chatswood. Featuring ensembles from the Senior Campus, the audience was entertained with a diverse range of performances and repertoire from ensembles in the Choral, Concert Band, Strings and Small Ensemble programs.

With over 200 students and staff involved in this event, the Festival captured many exciting musical moments, from Chamber Music through to Jazz Improvisation. All musicians involved delivered an outstanding concert program that explored a wide range of repertoire and demonstrated a high level of technical and performance skills across all years, culminating in the Yr 12 Graduating Musicians Finale with a medley of Beatles hits!

The energy backstage was incredible, bundled with examples of peer-support and encouragement, positivity, excitement and pure enjoyment. This is one of the wonderful elements of Redlands Music, highlighting camaraderie and collaboration across Yrs 7-12 as they performed alongside one another.

As a department, we are very proud of the students’ collective achievements across all areas of ensemble work, solos and featured performances, as they explored a wide range of musical styles and performance contexts. The Music Department would like to acknowledge the contributions of all members of the Music team for their hard work, patience, flexibility in thinking and care of students as part of the Senior Music Festival. In consideration of the large number of students involved, and the overall logistics in staging solo performances right through to full-scale massed ensembles, the event ran incredibly smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Some photos can be found on Redlands Pulse.

We would like to acknowledge the winners of the Senior Music Festival ticket selling competition:

  • Prize 1 – The He Family
  • Prize 2 – The Houchell Family
  • Prize 3 – The Bessell Family
  • Prize 4 – The Pretellis Family

Head of Sport

The Football World Cup always provides an exciting battle between nations great and small –  watching teams filled with professional Football superstars earning millions being defeated by teams of amateurs who have worked two jobs and paid for their own flights to get the opportunity just to take the field. The beauty of this type of competition is that it tears away the preconceptions people have of more talent and more money will equal more success.

I liken this to the argument we often hear in school. That the bigger the school and bigger the funding, the more success. School sport can not be as simple as that though, or else there would be a linear relationship with enrolment size and trophy quantities.

It is not a magic formula, where bigger is better. A critical challenge is one of quality control. It is more difficult to ensure that a large number of students have a positive experience than a small number. Beyond the critical mass needed to maintain a high performance program, larger student populations make demands on resources that can stretch the capacity of an organisation to deliver quality.

Much more important than size is the culture within the school. A strong sporting culture has always been able to thrive in relatively small schools. This is often an inconspicuous quality that can take a long time to build.

Sport has never been important to all children. But the proportion who are inspired by physical challenge, and who want to engage and strive to improve, varies enormously between schools, nor does this correlate closely with school type. Big, small, boarding, day, urban, rural, academic and otherwise: all can have a strong culture where it is popular to be fit and active, and sports teams are important and valued. A weak sporting culture is one where pupils pursue a more selfish agenda and don’t develop perseverance towards difficult long term goals. These schools often blame external factors for the decline of sports and envy schools with their larger pupil numbers, believing this would solve all problems.

The most important thing a school can have in sport is a strong culture of participation. Aspiration, commitment, selflessness and teamwork all emerge from this. Culture is far more difficult to build and far more significant than resources such as facilities. There are no shortcuts, and no magic formulas. Sport must and should be a positive experience. Motivated students drive each other on, and develop each day in an environment where effort is important and the process then becomes to be understood as being more important than the outcome. These are the foundations of school sport success, and attempts to categorise competitive standards entirely on enrolment size is false. Culture is always king!

Athletics

We had a fantastic day out at the Secondary School Athletics Carnival, congratulations to Dumolo for winning the House Shield. It was great to see all of the House Captains encouraging all members of their Houses to participate.

Congratulations to Emma Mahon (Yr 9) who broke two records yesterday, the 1500m record with a blistering time of 5:04.64, which took just over 13 seconds from the previous record set back in 2000. Emma also broke the 800m record with a scintillating time of 2:27.82, breaking a record which has stood since 1998 of 2:29.31. Congratulations also to Alexandra York (Yr 10) who broke the Intermediate Girls Long Jump record with a jump of 5.36m. The following are the Age Champions and Runners Up:

Football

Round 7 was set to be a huge round for Redlands Football. Unfortunately, with the ground closure of Macquarie University Fields we could no longer host any home games. We had a number of teams meet in Lang Gym and play a mini World Cup. It was a lot of fun for the students in attendance, and there were some extremely competitive, exciting Futsal games.

Oakhill were willing to host our 1st XI Boys Football team so the game could still go ahead. Giving up an early lead of 0-2 to Oakhill, it was going to be tough for our team to fight back and get the win. A goal from Captain, Michael Moore saw the score at 1-2, however another goal to Oakhill had Redlands going into half time down 1-3. Our Redlands team came out strong in the second half, and with another goal, the score line at 3-2. Having two more shots on goal, we were in with a chance to tie the game but unfortunately couldn’t capitalise on the opportunities. Credit to our 1st XI Boys, they played a great game and have shown great improvement across the season.

We look forward to seeing all of our teams back in action in Term 3.

Netball

A huge thank you to those who came down to NBISC on Saturday in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia fundraising. It was great to see so much pink around the Netball courts. We had some great results with our 1st VII, Inter A and Junior B teams having strong wins against St Paul’s Grammar School. Our Senior 2nds and Senior 4th unfortunately went down to Chevalier College, and our Senior 3rds who are showing some great form towards the back end of the season, also went down to Oakhill College.

A reminder that the NSNA Competition still runs this weekend (Saturday 30 June).

We are still seeking interest for the Giants vs Fever Netball clash on Saturday 4 August at the ICC, Darling Harbour with the game starting at 7pm. We are opening this opportunity up to all players and parents and the cost will be charged to your School account. Tickets are approximately $30 per person. If you would like to attend this excursion, please register by contacting the Director of Netball Coaching, Annie Stalley, by Monday 3 July.

Redlands Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Fitness Centre will be open throughout the Winter holiday period. The opening hours will be from 8-10am and if you wish to access the Gym through these hours, you will need to email Mr Gooding directly so that he can place you on the roster.

Rugby

Our 1st XV had a slow start to play for the first ten minutes due to a very muddy pitch as each team fought to build possession and put pressure on the oppositions defence. Restricted by numerous penalties, the game began to build as Redlands were caught in their half with CCGS putting on two quick unconverted tries and Redlands being guilty of forcing the pass and not maintaining possession. After the second CCGS try, we woke up a bit in attack and began to put together some phases in attack, led brilliantly by some wonderful runs. All this build up allowed for a few breaks in the CCGS defensive line with Redlands scoring a brilliant try which was quickly converted. Halftime 10-7 CCGS.

The second half was brutal, with both teams putting some huge shots on in defence. With little possession and still plagued by penalties, Redlands were still able to make some head roads into the CCGS half and with an amazing interval of 20 plus phases were able to score a well worked team try. We started to break them more and more through their defensive line and our own defensive efforts were immense. CCGS camped on our line in attack, our defence was tested time and time again eventually on the bell being beaten on the wing. A wonderful win for Redlands 21-17.

Tennis

Last week Redlands played Oakhill College. Our 1sts team won in impressive fashion with a 6-2 victory. The 2nds had a very hard day and ran out of time to secure the win, going down 3-4. The 3rds went down 3-5. The 4ths produced another good performance and were able to secure another great victory 6-2. I wish everyone happy holidays and we will be back at training on Tuesday 24 July (first day back of Term 3).

Touch Football

Congratulations to Alexandra York who was selected in the Combined Independent Schools U15 Touch Football Team (CIS).

Waterpolo

We had some mixed results at the Waterpolo Grand Finals on Friday night. Our Open A Boys took on the Pittwater 10/11 team. Some strong attaching raids helped Redlands jump out to a 2-0 lead, Pittwater fought back to square it up at 2-2 at half time. The second half saw a change in momentum with Pittwater scoring 2 early goals to take a 2-4 lead. Redlands tried to fight back but seemed to be out of puff by the final quarter. Pittwater held onto their advantage and controlled possession and ended up taking the victory 4-5. The boys should be extremely proud of their efforts with a number of players improving greatly over season!

Our Open A Girls came into this fixture on the back of a strong regular season, however with a number of players taking part in the Senior Music Festival, the girls knew playing with only 7 would be tough. The girls looked to dominate early and then control the ball which is what they did. Wenona looked to move the ball around and tire out the girls, which kept them into the contest, until early in the 4th quarter where Redlands dominated early again jumping out to a 3 goal lead. It was great to see the girls work well together with a number of them being new to Waterpolo this year. They were led by some of the senior girls to maintain possession and hold Wenona off to take the match 10-7.

IPSHA Sports

There are no IPSHA fixtures this weekend. Matches recommence in Week 1 of Term 3.

NSNA Netball

Final round of matches for the term is this Friday. It’s also Redlands turn to do the duty at Willoughby Leisure Centre. Thanks to all those parents who have offered to assist. Ms Michael will be at Willoughby to coordinate all our volunteers, so please just track her down if you need guidance this Friday.

NSWPSSA Girls Football Representative

Sports Captain Jasmine Black always represents Redlands with a smile. Last week she went further afield, representing NSWCIS with a smile at the NSWPSSA Championships in Kiama. Despite finishing sixth in the NSW Champs, Jasmine had even more reason to smile – her selection in the NSW Schools team as Goalkeeper! Jasmine is a wonderful footballer and a humble athlete who excels at whatever she tries. She will undoubtedly represent Redlands and CIS well too, with an even bigger smile as she wears the sky blue for NSW at the School Sports Australia Championships in September.

Hockey

Our Junior School Hockey girls finished with a wonderful season record and should be immensely proud of their improvement over the term. Despite experiencing their first loss of the term in their final match for the season against Pymble, they showed great fighting spirit. Threatening to equalise with great pressure and they passed right up until the final whistle. The pics below show some of the great action from a wonderful Hockey season.

AFL

Despite going down to Knox last weekend, the fight amongst our boys was well worth a mention. Knox have been the benchmark this season and our boys took it right to them after a tough first quarter showing great courage, they put their heads over the ball and showed some great strength of character to battle their way back. Isaac Brooks’ hard running and grittiness around the contest was exciting. Lachlan Carmichael was fearless and led the way with his courage and Mitchell Travers-Wolf was exceptional in the backline, racking up tackle after tackle.

Rugby Sevens

Our Yr 3 and 4 Rugby boys finished off the term with two great wins last weekend. Playing three matches back to back is a tough ask, but our young charges managed it with aplomb, bouncing back from an early loss to post two great wins. The team is really coming along and showing some great cohesion and a real willingness to work together and for each other when the tough moments arrive!

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from Sports fixtures on Saturdays. If anyone has any pics or takes any, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Please send me the pics, or a link or even pop them in on a USB (it will be returned) to the Sports Office.
