NSW Titration Competition
Last Friday, three Yr 12 Chemistry students, Hugh Smylie, Heidi Fang and Elizabeth Lee participated in the NSW Titration competition organised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). This prestigious chemistry competition attracts over 1000 students from across NSW and was held at the University of Sydney where they competed against 49 other teams. Our team were up against very strong competition and did admirably well. They were also treated afterwards to a Nyholm Youth Lecture on “Real or counterfeit medicines, you decide”.
Elizabeth Lee – “I found the Titration competition so much fun to be able to participate in and prepare for. Going to the competition and having a mini day out was great as I had the opportunity to look around USYD to consider it as a university to apply for next year, as well as meet people from other schools and finally put all my Titration practice to good use during the actual competition. I absolutely believe that this experience is one worth repeating. Even though I won’t be able to next year, I’d highly recommend it for any Yr 11 and 12 students as I can guarantee them that it will help develop both their chemical skills and personal relationships.”
I would like to thank Ms Ruth Apple for all her preparation and work with the students for this competition.
Breakfast with a Scientist
Last year the inaugural year for Breakfast with a Scientist was a great success:
“The variety of the scientists who had come was amazing. The idea of having breakfast with the people who have excelled in their respective careers is amazing.” Yr 10 student.
“I enjoyed that we got to learn about science, architecture, cells and cardiology. And we got to have time at the end to ask the scientists questions.” Yr 7 student
As a part of Science Week 2018, we are looking to invite parents who work in science related fields to speak to our budding scientists at Redlands. Our aim is to demonstrate the importance of Science and Engineering in the wider community and to inspire the next generation of scientists.
Breakfast with a Scientist will take place on the morning of Thursday 16 August. The event will commence at 7.45am and finish at 10.10am. A light breakfast will be provided.
The session will involve:
- A short presentation about your work (5 minutes per speaker): What is your current role? What are the most exciting aspects of your role? What you like best about your job? What you find most challenging?
- Question and answer session with students (30 minutes).
If you are interested in being involved please email Sarah Harrisson. Please also provide details of your field of study.
