Science

Science Week (Week 4: 12-16 August)

The school theme of 2019 National Science Week is Destination Moon: more missions, more science. It focuses on:

  • how the combination of scientists, engineers, chemists, designers, mathematicians, flight directors, software experts, aerospace technicians and the technologies they used made the NASA Apollo 11 mission a success 50 years ago;
  • the space technologies and designs that have made more missions into space possible;
  • the space industry capabilities being envisioned and prototyped today, that inevitably will fulfil ambitions of returning to the Moon and other destinations in our solar system.

Since then, more sophisticated space satellites, probes, orbiters, landers and rovers have been designed, programmed and launched into space to track, detect and make observations, collect data and expand our knowledge and understanding of space.

These epic phases of space science, space technology and innovation have in the 21st century, enabled a dynamic era of space science, space technology, and innovation to evolve, one in which a new generation of space instruments and satellite capabilities have been informed by quantum technologies, big data, optical research and data science.

A number of activities will be happening to inspire curiosity and learning in students including:

Tutor Group Trivia Quiz

How much does each Tutor Group know about the landing on the moon and exploration of space? Prizes on offer.

Breakfast with a Scientist

Wednesday 14 August 7.45-10.10am (light breakfast provided)

We have eight parent scientists (Weather Derivatives, Health Economist, Mathematician, Environmental Scientist, Pharmacist, Patent Attorney, Chiropractor and General Practitioner) come to talk to you about their career, what it involves, the interesting bits, the challenges and how they got there.  You will then have the opportunity to talk to the scientists and ask them questions. All you have to do is sign up using your Redlands Google account, follow this link. You MUST sign up to be put onto the event and the sign-up closes on Monday 12 August at 10.00am.

Guest Speaker Yr 10

Thursday 15 August in Science lessons

DNA, genes and genetic disorders:  What is genomic sequencing and how is it used for rare disorders; How are Scientists using exciting new genetic technologies like CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing?; Can we and should we manipulate the human genome?.

Planetarium Yr 7

Thursday 15 August

Classes will be visiting the Skydome to discover more about the solar system and the universe we live in all while still in Redlands Hall!

Science Fun in the Quad

Experience the wonder and magic of Science with fun hands-on experiments and amazing demonstrations; from egg drops and spinning cups full of water to optical illusions and giant elephant toothpaste. Join in Science Fun in the Quad at lunchtime on Tuesday 14 August during National Science Week.

Paper Plane Competition

Friday 13 August at lunchtime in Redlands Hall

Do you have what it takes to soar with the best? Can you throw a paper plane 20 metres or keep it aloft for 6 seconds? Planes must be made of one sheet of standard A4 paper with no cuts or additions. There are prizes for the best in each class so get practising (but not in class!).
