Nyumbar Aboriginal Education
Nyumbar is the Minjungbul word from the Bundjalung Nation which means, Teach , Show and Guide. We were fortunate to have Nyumbar, visit the preschool to share First Nations culture with us. Nyumbar is a family owned and run Aboriginal Cultural Education business based in Sydney. Deslyn and Isaac shared artifacts and tools that Aboriginal people used in previous times such as boomerangs, coolamon, kangaroo and possum skins. The children were taught about talking sticks and the symbols used to make meaning. We painted our own talking sticks and used the picture symbols to tell our own story. It is important to be able to share in authentic Aboriginal culture that is age appropriate for our children. These experiences help us to build an understanding of this rich culture and share in a future of cultural mutual respect and celebration.
International Day
Tuesday 4 April
International Day is one of the most important days here at Redlands. We are a school of many nationalities and cultures so let’s celebrate that this year without any restrictions.
This year we would like to ask you, our international community to help us organise a wonderful day full of activities, food, talks, music, and any other fun activities that you would like to share.
If you are a parent who identifies with another culture, we would love you to join us on 4 April, between 9am and 10am to share aspects of your culture with us. Please email me directly or catch me in the hallway to let me know if you are interested in coming along.
