The Year That Was

The Music Department would like to take this opportunity to thank the parent community for all their support throughout the year and in providing their child with the wonderful opportunity to learn a musical instrument and explore their singing voices. In reflecting on the year passed, we would like to take the time to acknowledge students enrolled in the Academic Music program, individuals who take weekly Music tuition lessons and all Redlands musicians who work collaboratively as part of the Music Ensembles program. In recognising these successes, we look forward to celebrating many musical achievements in the various end of year performances over the coming week. We would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of our Specialist Music staff who work tirelessly to create exciting and inspiring musical learning experiences. The role of leading professional musicians in delivering weekly rehearsals is integral to the ongoing successes of the Music program at Redlands.

Staff News

It is with much sadness that we farewell Anne Marie Braid (Violin), Danielle Vita (Academic Music P-6), Alexandra and Paul Jones (Flute) at the end of this year. All these members of our team have been key teachers in their areas of specialisation and have exuded immense passion for teaching and learning, while supporting students of all levels throughout their Music studies.

As valued members of our team, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Anne Marie, Alexandra, Danielle and Paul for the many years of collective service and dedication to the musical learning of students here at Redlands. All these teachers have been inspirational educators within our team, demonstrating incredible expertise and professionalism, and we would like to wish them all the very best with their new and exciting endeavours.

Joining the Music Department in January 2020 will be accomplished educator and Strings specialist, Mrs Katherine Moses, who will take up the role of P-6 Music teacher and MIC of Strings. Katherine has recently been teaching at Methodist Ladies College (MLC School) in Burwood, is an experienced Kodály Music teacher and accomplished cellist and we look forward to welcoming her to our team next year. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Ms Mar’yana Sywak for her support of the Strings program this year in the capacity of Acting MIC of Strings. The Music community is advised that the department is currently interviewing for replacement Music tutors to support the specialisation of Violin, French Horn and Flute. More information regarding the staffing of these various studios will be provided before the end of the year.

Jazz In The Basement

Saturday 14 March at 6.00pm

We are pleased to announce that the Music Department launch event has been renamed Jazz in The Basement, and will be held next year on Saturday 14 March at 6.00pm. In working in association with the Friends of Music, the department will host performances in the garden and forecourt outside the John Roberts Centre, presented in the style of an outdoor picnic (BYO picnic rug, seating, food and non-alcoholic beverages). As an event that brings together musicians from both the Junior and Senior Campuses, we ask that you all place the Music Department launch event into your diaries. We are certainly looking forward to an exciting outdoor music experience.

Ensemble Participation, Attendance and Punctuality at Rehearsals

Many ensembles are currently rehearsing and preparing repertoire for end of year events. A reminder that regular, punctual attendance at all Music Ensemble rehearsals is imperative as students are underway in preparing for end of year events. In the event of absence, please email juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for Junior Campus Ensembles and seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for Senior Campus Ensembles.

Speech Day and Carols – Additional Rehearsals

Throughout Weeks 7 and 8, Co-Curricular Music Ensembles students will be concentrating on additional combined rehearsals for both the Carols Service and the Annual Speech Day/Night. In piecing together challenging repertoire, various ensembles will be combining throughout the school week in readiness for these events. For detailed rehearsal schedule please refer to the Secondary Carols and Speech Night Music Rehearsals Letter on the portal.

As students will be involved in school-time rehearsal sessions, please note that all regular morning, lunchtime and afternoon Secondary Co-Curricular Music Ensembles are cancelled for Week 8. Rehearsal arrangements for The Big Top Luna Park on Wednesday 4 December will be communicated as separate Student Information Letter at the conclusion of Week 7.

Senior Campus

Rock Bands

Rock in the Garden was held on Thursday 28 November in the garden of the John Roberts Centre.

We would like to congratulate the Secondary School Rock Bands who performed at recess and lunch and thank Mathew Owen (MIC Small Ensembles) and Rock Band Specialists David Wooltorton, Nathaniel Smith and Peter Atkins for their excellent overseeing of this program throughout 2019. In advance of the 2020 Battle of the Bands, students are advised that the theme for this event will be Music of the 80’s.

Junior and Secondary Carols Services

The Junior and Secondary School Carols Services are being held in Robert Dunnet Hall this week, as coordinated by the School Chaplains in conjunction with the Music Department. This end of year gathering for the school community is an important time in reflecting and celebrating our heritage as a school in approach of the festive season. We would like to acknowledge the Junior and Secondary School musicians who have invested time rehearsing and refining repertoire for these events. It is such a wonderful opportunity for our musicians to perform in front of their peers and the wider school community. Thanks to our MIC’s of Ensembles, conductors and accompanists for their role in preparing the students for these performances.

Junior Campus

Instrument Return

All Yr 5 MIP students have now returned their hire instruments to the Music Department. Please return any outstanding instruments to the Junior Music Office. Students who hire an instrument from Redlands and are involved in a cocurricular ensemble or private tuition, do not need to return their instrument at this time.

Junior Music Ensembles 2020 – Auditions

Students wishing to be considered for Junior Voices and the Junior Chamber program will be able to audition at the start of Term 1. Information and audition application forms are available from the Junior Music Office or located on Redlands Pulse.

2020 Musicianship Classes

Enrolments are now open to students who are currently learning an instrument and who would like to further extend their knowledge of Music Theory. They are encouraged to join one of the Musicianship Classes.
