Issue 37 2019 - 28 Nov 2019

From the Principal

After 12 years at this wonderful school, this is my final Note Day. I have loved my time at Redlands, due in no small measure to the unique culture of the School – the vibrancy, the warm and welcoming atmosphere, the very natural relationships between the girls and boys, the respect between students and teachers, the strong academic culture, the fact that there is no typical Redlands student, the variety of accents in the classrooms and students displaying their passions and talents on the stage and on the sporting fields.

The learning journey which our teachers provide to the students across all the Year Groups is really helping to develop good thinkers who strive for deep understanding. The Redlands approach to teaching and learning is keeping alight the spirit of inquiry that parents will have recognised in the children when they were very young and began to explore the world about them. Every year I am overjoyed to see the maturity and life-readiness of our Senior students when they finish their schooling and prepare to go on an amazing variety of different pathways as they move on to make a difference in the world of the future.

The culture of Redlands continues to grow and strengthen thanks to the pastoral work of our staff, the leadership among the student themselves and the support that is provided to one another which results in students who are prepared to do their personal best in whatever they put their hearts, minds and energy into.

The facilities on both campuses have been steadily improving, to provide students and teachers with physical spaces that support the learning and teaching and to provide attractive and pleasant outdoor areas that are used both for learning and for relaxing and socialising.

I had hoped that the first stage of the Master Plan for the Senior Campus would have been completed by the end of this year. Sadly, this was not to be, but I am heartened by the excellent progress that our lead contractors, Buildcorp, are making with the construction of the New Learning Hub. That building and its surrounds across to Gerard Street is going to be a remarkable place both indoors and in the landscaped area. The teachers and students are going to find these new facilities transformational.

I wish all members of the Redlands community a happy and holy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Sandra and I shall miss being a part of the community, but I feel very privileged to have been offered the opportunity to lead and guide the School over the past twelve years. Long may the Redlands Light continue to shine.

Dr Peter Lennox

Speech Night

Wednesday 4 December is a pupil free day at the Secondary School; however, Speech Night is compulsory for all Secondary School students that evening as we celebrate prize winners, enjoy the talents of our performers and bade farewell to Dr Lennox on his retirement. All students are to arrive to the Big Top at Luna Park by 5.15pm and doors open for parents and guests at 5.40pm. Further details of specific student arrival times for rehearsals will be sent separately. I look forward to seeing you there.

Boys Uniform Term 1 2020

I am delighted to advise that we will be introducing shorts as a summer uniform option for boys commencing in Term 1 next year, in response to requests from parents and students through the uniform surveys we have undertaken. So for Term 1, Secondary School boys have the option of wearing trousers or shorts. The shorts are currently in production and are scheduled to be delivered to the Uniform Shop at the end of January. We will advise parents when they are available for purchase. The shorts are to be worn with knee length grey socks which will also be available through the Uniform Shop. Yr 6 boys transitioning to Yr 7 next year have the option of continuing to wear their current Redlands shorts, or wearing trousers or the new Secondary School shorts during Term 1.

Australian Business Week

It has been wonderful to see our Yr 10 students engaged in their Australian Business Week activities this week. Students have been working in groups developing their projects and proposals for presentations tomorrow, and during this time they have been mentored by our parent volunteers. Parents and speakers have also presented to students over the course of the week to further develop their knowledge and skills. We have been so fortunate to have this expertise, support and guidance for our students and truly appreciate the efforts of our parent mentors. I would like to also extend a special thank you to Ms Laurenzi and Ms Coleman for leading and organising this excellent learning opportunity for our students.

Mock Trial Finals

Today our Mock Trial team consisting of Yr 12 students, Aleisha Lawrence, Renata Ferreira, Madeleine Howard, Emily Colvin, Stephanie Larcos and Leilani Heath, competed in the finals of the NSW Mock Trial Competition against Loreto Kirribilli at the Mooting Court of Sydney University. Even though they finished as runner-up, it was a tremendous result to get to the final two teams of over 200 schools who competed in the NSW Mock Trial Competition. I would like to especially acknowledge Ms Rebecca Mountain for all of her efforts in coaching the team this year.

Young Persons’ Plan for the Planet

Over the course of this year, a group of Yr 10 and 11 students, led by the Coordinator of Service, Ms Kria Coleman, have been meeting weekly to work on the Young Persons’ Plan for the Planet Program. This project is run out of the Australian National University and engages school students from around Australia to research the progress that local, state and federal governments are making in addressing the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Redlands team was chosen to be the lead team researching the data for NSW and last term was engaged in a workshop led by Professor Ian Chambers from the Australian National University to collate and evaluate their data. The Redlands team have prepared a report of their findings and a small group of students and teachers have been asked to present this report at the international Young Persons’ Plan for the Planet conference in Singapore in early December. This is quite a recognition and honour for these students and we wish them all the best representing Redlands and NSW at this conference next week.

Tutor Meetings 2020

We will once again commence the new school year with Tutor meetings in 2020. Please note that the first day of school for returning students is Tuesday 28 January and all students are expected to come to school to have a meeting with their Tutor on that day. We would like parents to attend this meeting, as well, so that they can collaboratively reflect on the previous year, as well as develop goals and strategies for the year ahead. (However, if parents are unable to attend this meeting because of other commitments, we would still like the students to attend these meetings on their own.) These Tutor meetings are the only requirement for students on this day and students can return home at the conclusion of this meeting. More information about these Tutor meetings and sign up information for the day has been sent home in a separate correspondence.

Cashless Canteen and Uniform Shop in 2020

From 13 January 2020, the Uniform Shop is going cashless. You will be able to pay for your uniform purchases via debit cards and all major credit cards including American Express. You can also order online by visiting www.flexischools.com.au and following the prompts where you will see a full list of uniform items to order.

Uniform Shop/Blazers

The Uniform Shop will open on Friday 6 and Monday 9 December from 9.00am – 3.00pm before returning on Monday 13 January 2020. For details on making an appointment, please see Redlands Pulse.

The Uniform Shop will be open on Thursday 5 December from 9.00am to 3.00pm to take blazers for embroidery for pockets and half colours. Please ensure that all pockets are emptied, all badges removed and clearly labelled with student name. All blazers dropped in will require the relevant certificate of the award. Students will require blazers for Speech Night on Wednesday 4 December. Blazers can be collected from the Uniform Shop from Monday 20 January 2020.

Important Notice Regarding Medications, Diabetic Kits, Anaphylaxis Kits and Asthma Kits

On Tuesday 3 December, Secondary School students with Diabetes, Asthma or at risk of Anaphylaxis will have their individual kits returned to them for the upcoming summer holiday period. Parents of students with medications in the Health Centre are requested to make arrangements to collect these by 3.20pm. All scheduled medications are to be collected by a nominated parent or carer. Please note that scheduled medications will not be signed out to students.

Attention Parents of Students at Risk of Anaphylaxis

Redlands is committed to supporting our students at risk of Anaphylaxis. Our ability to do so, however, requires all respective parents to ensure that Redlands is provided with the necessary and specific information required for carrying out your child’s individual emergency procedures in the event of an occurrence. This information is specified in each student’s individual Anaphylaxis Action Plan.

As stated previously, on Tuesday 3 December, Secondary School students at risk of Anaphylaxis will have their individual kits returned to them for the upcoming summer holiday period. In order to help us to assist you in the management of your child’s health for the academic year 2020, we ask that you ensure your child returns their emergency kit to the Health Centre Nurse, in a clearly labelled container, with a valid EpiPen, current Anaphylaxis Action Plan containing a recent colour photograph, as well as any other required medication, on the first day of Term 1 2020. All students, returning or new to the school, at risk of Anaphylaxis, are requested to comply with this request. In addition, students at risk of Anaphylaxis should carry their second EpiPen to and from school either on their person, of in their school/sports bags.

Student Representative Council

Leadership is challenging so Redlands offers a variety of ways to nurture and grow the leadership skills of our students. One of these opportunities is the Student Representative Council (SRC) where students develop pubic speaking, advocacy, communication skills and an understanding of the systems of the school. Students are elected by their cohort to represent them.

The final activity this year was a day of training, challenge and reflection. The students (and teachers) were physically and mentally challenged by a high ropes course at Taronga Zoo. With a spectacular backdrop, clear weather and the encouragement of each other, the students faced obstacles and challenges. Each task required strategy, strength and a dose of courage. All the students experienced challenge and success. This provided a rich source of life and leadership lessons which were explored later in the morning.

The morning continued with some team work learning activities focusing on problem solving, communication and listening.

The essential part of any experience is the ability to reflect and critique, so one can make the most of any experience. Students spent time reflecting and critiquing their experience in SRC. Their thoughts about how they have grown were encouraging. Here is a sample of their thoughts: How to build on each other ideas; compromise and persuading others; social skills and the ability to listen; conveying my ideas to an audience; understanding the steps required for a change.

The outgoing SRC affirmed the importance of this group in representing the students and commends the future SRC to make the effort to both hear the students and report back.

Students in Yrs 7-10 are encouraged to think about running for the SRC next year as it is an important voice in the school, a valuable service to the community and a rich learning opportunity for the individual.

Note from the Chaplain

Christmas descends on us again with carols, sales, festivities, parties and end of year celebrations. It is difficult to discern the essence of Christmas in the clutter. One of my greatest joys is to focus with the school for an afternoon on the essence of Christmas. The birth of Jesus was announced by the Angels as ‘Good news of Great joy for all people’ (Luke 2:10). The promise is of a deep seated delight that is more than happiness that sustains us despite our immediate circumstances. A birth of any baby is a source of joy especially if they are precious to us. However this baby is for all people, for shepherds and kings, for men and women, for rich and poor, for you and me. This baby is the love of God breaking into history. Jesus, who was there at creation, through all eternity becomes human so all humans can see the reality of God. The creator becoming the creature so that the creature may know the creator.

The joy bubbles through the Christmas story. Mary and Joseph, like any new parent, delight in their new born. The Angels joyously sing songs announcing the birth of a saviour. The shepherds see and gossip about this baby, rejoicing as they go. The kings bringing gifts, were overjoyed when they find the babe whom they worshipped. Joy is the heartbeat of the story. Each seek this child and as they encounter him they see the face of God and the kindness of God. Not only has Jesus revealed the nature of God but he has set out on the mission of his life to die for others and provide the door for each of us to enter the presence and love of God. This reconciliation is the start of a relationship that lasts forever and showers you with joy, love and hope. It transforms our mundane to significant and brings joy in all situations.

As you celebrate family, holidays and festivities take a moment this Christ-mas to ponder the Christ-child. As you encounter Jesus, may he bring the greatest joy to you and to your family.

Service and Social Engagement

As the year draws to a close, I would like to take some time to reflect on the valuable contributions made by so many students and families over the course of 2019, where we have been active in the outdoors participating in Clean Up Australia Day, the Mother’s Day Classic and the Pink Sports round in support of Breast Cancer Research.

Students in Ys 7 to 9 have generously given their time for a wide range of activities including weekly visits to the residents at Bougainvillea. Led by teachers Kate Moore and Alissa Ynson, these visits are a wonderful way for Redlands students to connect with our neighbours and develop an appreciation of the varied lives these members of the wider community have had. To wrap up the year, Toby Page, Chloe Laverty, Emily Colvin, Vivienne Spicer, Anna Saunders and Claudia Weiss organised and hosted a special sing along Christmas Carols with the residents to mark the start of the festive season. The students baked Christmas tree brownies, gingerbread and cookies for the residents, which created a lovely, welcoming Christmas spirit. This occasion was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by many of the residents, who warmly joined in singing many known carols with the students.

Other community contributions included the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal ably undertaken by Yr 11, as well as our weekly commitment to breakfast service at the Matthew Talbot Men’s Hostel.

Within the school, students have supported Junior School Reading and Maths Clubs. This has been greatly appreciated by the Junior School staff. Hopefully these rewarding experiences have given our students an opportunity to reflect on their good fortune and give back to others in a meaningful way.

The Secondary School have also taken time to engage with issues like gender equality through International Women’s Day, and our Environment student team have raised environmental and climate issues in assembly which included a visit from the Meet the Oceans team through our involvement with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

We have made a very valued contribution through donation drives for Matthew Talbot (Socks, Jocks and Toiletries), Anglicare (Toys ‘n’ Tucker) and Easter Eggs for Edward Edgar Lodge. Not forgetting the many bake sales and sausage sizzles as fundraisers for NSW communities impacted by bushfires and drought, the Peru service project, the Cambodian service non-profit M’Lop Tapang trip and a range of other smaller initiatives.

Significantly, students have had many opportunities through their Pastoral Program, participating in a wide range of learning, thinking and reflection activities linked to social engagement and service. These have examined the meaning and value of service in Yr 7, culminating this term with a visit from Assistance Dogs Australia and the positive and negative impact we have on our Environment in Yr 8. Students visited the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) to make connections between their learning in Geography, Science and Service. We have examined the challenges of social inequality in Yrs 9 and 10 where we have built a deeper understanding of disadvantage and the issues of homelessness with a wonderful Sleepout attended by over 150 students and a hardy bunch of teachers. Finally in Yrs 11 and 12, students have worked passionately and independently on a wide range of Service initiatives of their own choosing which will hopefully stay with them as they come to the end of their schooling.

Lastly, we have sent some very fine groups of students on wonderful, exciting and thought provoking trips with service as a key element. This year students have travelled to Fiji, Arnhem Land and Peru and learnt about the places and the people as well as making a contribution to the communities they have visited. At the end of this term we wish our next group of students travelling to Cambodia all the best for a safe and meaningful journey.

For the first time we have had a team of passionate and engaged students working throughout the year to examine the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals and measure how NSW is performing against these. We will have a team of five students attending an inter-school It’s our future Earth 3.0 Conference in Singapore next week to share their findings and collaborate with students from many other places and countries.

Thank you very much to all of the teachers that have made these activities possible. It is very rewarding to reflect on the very many ways Redlands teachers, students and their families contribute to our own community and also on a much wider basis.

Achieving Balance in your life – Dr Prue Salter

A student with a balanced approach to school and life will:

  • Make time to spend with their family
  • Make time to spend with their friends
  • Have hobbies and/or activities that they do on a regular basis
  • Play sport or do some exercise regularly
  • Have time each week where they totally relax and let their body “chill out”.

Despite all this, they will still have some time to do the right amount of work for school too.

Early Departure

All leave requests need to be approved through the Head of Secondary School, Mr Corcoran.

Safe Travels

Good luck and safe travels to all students travelling to Cambodia, Melbourne and Singapore for various service, sport and youth conferences. I hope that all students have a fantastic time and return in good spirits for their well-deserved holidays.

Thank You

Thank you so much to the entire class of 2020 and parents for making this year such a wonderful one. Working with each of you through the initial challenges of HSC/IB, watching you on the stage and the sports fields, seeing you come together as a cohort at camp and step up into your positions as school leaders has been a joy and honour. Parents, your continued support and confidence in the School are always appreciated. It has been an exciting year for our cohort and they have done so well. It is important we all remember that this a journey and with all journeys, there are always highs, lows and everything in between. How we handle those highs and how we bounce back from those lows help to shape who we are as individuals. We wish each and every one of you a blessed and Merry Christmas with time to stop and recharge the batteries before a great year ahead in 2020.

Speech Night

Next Wednesday 4 December, we will join together to recognise students’ achievements at the Redlands Secondary School Speech Night at the Big Top, Luna Park. This is a compulsory school event. Please can I ask for your support and request that you reiterate our expectations for behaviour at this important formal event. Students will be reminded next week at our Form Assembly of the importance of this occasion and the School’s expectations for dress on the evening. Students are advised to be attentive, to refrain from chatting and of course, not to use mobile telephones during the event. Thank you for your support to ensure that students behave appropriately so that we can properly celebrate the achievements of our exceptional Yr 10 cohort.

Student Farewells

It is with heavy hearts that we farewell Abbie Dillon, Annalise Joyce, Jamie Lapping and Yoojay Weir. We wish these students well, as they continue their education in new settings. We hope that they will look back fondly on their time at Redlands and that they will keep in touch.

ABW

Much excitement has occurred this week as students have worked collaboratively on their simulated businesses. Students have been engaged and I must say, have been enthusiastically competitive as they strategised with the aim of making profit. A special thanks must go to our parent volunteers who have given of their time and expertise. Without their commitment to this week, we could not have offered student such a rich and valuable experience.

Science Symposium

Congratulations to the overall winner of the Science Symposium, Theo Mirrlees-Black, for his investigation You’re Not Safe Under the Sea. Best communication and presentation went to Ela Yohannan for her investigation A Private “Dye” Investigation and most innovative or original investigation was awarded to Tylor Wessels for his work How Salty is the Sea?.

Young Person’s Plan for the Planet Conference

From the 3-8 December, Max Currie and Olivia Reid, together with three students from other Year Groups, will be heading to Singapore for the Young Person’s Plan for the Planet Conference. Max and Olivia are to be commended for their commitment during the past six months, as together with a team of 15 Redlands students, they have been working towards designing a plan for NSW orientated around the Sustainable Development Goals issued by the UN in 2015. Our students have been the recipients of a government grant and are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase their work on a global stage. They are wished every success for the conference and it is hoped that they will forge connections and create innovative plans with students from numerous nations across the globe.

Holidays

As the year draws to a close, I would like to wish our Yr 10 students and families a very happy and relaxing Summer holiday. Our Yr 10 students have had a marvelous year of many and varied achievements. It has been a pleasure to read students’ academic reports and gauge their progress across many disciplines. It is hard to believe that very soon, in the new year, we will be welcoming students back as the new Redlands Yr 11 cohort. I hope you all find time for well-deserved rest, rejuvenation and fun with family and friends.

Year 9

It is hard to believe that Yr 9 is coming to an end! The students have had such a busy year and been involved in so many wonderful events.

School returns for students next year on Wednesday 29 January 2020. However, on Tuesday 28 January, Secondary School students attend Tutor meetings with parent/carer.

Celebration

The Redlands Secondary School Speech Night will be held at The Big Top in Luna Park (1 Olympic Drive, Milsons Point) on Wednesday 4 December. The event will begin at 6.00 pm with doors opening to guests at 5.40 pm. Students are required to arrive in full school uniform, including blazer and need to be seated in their Tutor Groups by 5.15 pm.

Room to Read

Last week Yr 9 held a fundraiser for the charity Room to Read, through a sausage sizzle and a bookstall at lunch. In conjunction with some of the profits from the Yr 9 Market Day in Term 1, Yr 9 were able to raise $1656 for the organisation who will use the money to improve child literacy rates in LEDC’s, with a focus on girls education. Thank you to all of the Yr 9 students who helped through the donation of books for the bookstall and for helping out on the day. A special thank you also to Louse Colin and Iris Buisman who worked tirelessly over the last couple of terms bring this fundraising event together.

I hope you have a fantastic summer break, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We warmly thank Mr Michael Warrell for all of his support and guidance in his role of Acting Assistant Year Advisor in 2019. We also congratulate him on his new appointment of IB CAS Coordinator. Next year we formally welcome back Ms Abby Walker, as Assistant Year Advisor.

Lockers

Students will need to empty and clean their lockers by the end of term. To avoid a heavy bag next Tuesday, students have been advised to do so gradually over the next few days! Students will be allocated new lockers in 2020.

Parent Holiday Reading
  • eSafety Parent Guide: The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has conducted research into parent attitudes, behaviour and needs in terms of online education of children and young people. As a result, a range of findings will inform their resources and support available to schools and families. More information can be found on the eSafetyParents page.
  • Instagram Parent Guide: Instagram and headspace have created a partnership to produce a useful parent guide for Instagram. This guide aims to promote parent understanding and conversations with young people over the age of 13.
Summer Recommendations from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills Website

Summer provides the perfect time for students to revisit their filing system and determine where they might keep their assessments or notes from this year that they might need again for subjects next year. It might also be the time to clean out and determine a better way to organise for Yr 9 after some reflection on how this year went. How can you help at home? Additional tips can be found here. A Final Note

Thank you for a fantastic year. The Yr 7 Pastoral team wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday!

Holidays are wonderful times for students to relax and enjoy their families and friends – after all, they are sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren etc. well before they are students. For all students, holidays are also an excellent opportunity to read, exercise more and pursue their hobbies away from electronic devices. Students are encouraged to get active outside and enjoy Sydney in summer, and a well-deserved break! We look forward to welcoming you back in the new year and hearing about your holiday adventures.

End of Year Reminders

While summer is just around the corner, students are reminded that classes are still in full effect and curriculum continues to be covered. Some students have needed further reminding of classroom expectations and requirements as they enter these last few weeks. Students are completing the last of four fundraisers this week in support of Assistance Dogs Australia. Their enthusiasm and creativity in this initiative has been overwhelming and we encourage them to keep this motivation and love for service into Yr 8 and beyond.

Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker

Contributions are being collected now through the end of term. The key message is sharing the Christmas joy by making a small contribution. https://toysntucker.org.au/TNT_2017_Video.mp4

Head of Junior School

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Junior School Speech Day

Please find below a reminder of the schedule for our annual Junior School Speech Day, the final event in the Junior School calendar on Wednesday 4 December. Attendance for all students is compulsory and it is exciting that every student will perform at least one item on stage.

In particular, please note the uniform requirements of full Summer school uniform including blazers, neat hair and polished shoes.

Yr 6 Fundraiser – Monday 2 December

With the recent planned car wash fundraiser cancelled due to water restrictions and the bushfires, there will now be a Zooper Dooper ice pole sale next Monday, which the Yr 6 students are organising. More details on the Upcoming Events page.

Time to Save Student Work!

As the year draws to a close, we would like to remind families about assisting their children with managing content and files on their iPads. During the holiday break, Redlands ICT will recall all iOS Apps that are either deployed or managed by the School. While every effort is made to keep data from Apple Apps such as Pages, Keynote, iMovie etc, from time to time this may be deleted and not retrievable. Our strong recommendation to ensure any work completed on the iPads over the holidays are backed up.

To assist you with this, we have created a series of steps on how to back up your child’s iPad work on Redlands Pulse here for parents to follow.

iPad Program 2020

Please note that from 2020, all Yrs 3 and 4 students will be provided with an iPad for learning use at school, when required, and do not need to bring one in from home. The Bring Your Own iPad continues for Yrs 5 and 6.

Boys Uniform Year 7 2020

We are delighted to advise that we will be introducing shorts as a summer uniform option for Secondary School boys commencing in Term 1 next year, in response to requests from parents and students through the uniform surveys we have undertaken. So for Term 1, Yr 6 boys transitioning to Yr 7 have the option of continuing to wear their current Redlands shorts, or wearing trousers or the new Secondary School shorts. The shorts are currently in production and are scheduled to be delivered to the Uniform Shop at the end of January. We will advise parents when they are available for purchase. The shorts are to be worn with knee length grey socks as per the current Junior School summer uniform.

Uniform Shop

The shop will open on Friday 6 and Monday 9 December from 9.00am – 3.00pm before returning on Monday 13 January 2020. For details on making an appointment, please see Redlands Pulse.

From 13 January 2020, the Uniform Shop is going cashless. You will be able to pay for your uniform purchases via debit cards and all major credit cards including American Express.

You can also order online by visiting www.flexischools.com.au and following the prompts where you will see a full list of uniform items to order.

Thank You Dr Lennox

In this final Note Day of 2019, it is with appreciation and admiration that I acknowledge the significant contributions of our Principal, Dr Lennox, as he retires at the end of this term.

Dr Lennox appointed me to the Head of Junior School role at the start of 2009 and over the eleven years I have had the privilege of working and learning alongside him in our Executive leadership team, I have seen the enormous impact that he has had on the School in general and directly with colleagues, students and families. He has served as a mentor, sounding board and anchor of support to me over this time.

Dr Lennox’s relentless energy, commitment and influential leadership has seen the School continually grow over the last decade into one of the leading schools in Sydney and beyond as the School’s reputation radiates further and further afield across the globe.

Over his tenure at Redlands, he has enjoyed many visits to Junior School classrooms to spend time with students and teachers and only last week, he enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Year 6 Gallery Walk and connect again with students and their learning, which he shared with Executive colleagues during our meeting earlier this week.

A side of Dr Lennox that perhaps not all in our community may see is his great sense of humour and fun and we shall miss this too.

On behalf of the Junior School community of students, staff and families, I thank Dr Lennox for his dedication to Redlands and indeed to education in Australia over his stellar career and wish him and his wife, Sandra, many happy future times together with their family.

Staffing News

Looking ahead to 2020, please note the staffing changes below as we say goodbye to some staff and welcome others to Redlands.

Dean of Teaching and Learning P-6

Our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Coutts, will step down from his role next year and will be taking a year’s leave of absence after 18 years of dedicated service to Redlands. Mr Coutts has a number of plans during this time including further study, research and possible travel and we wish him all the best on his adventure and look forward to seeing him again in 2021.

From January, we are delighted to confirm the appointment of Mrs Stacey Smith as our new Dean of Teaching and Learning P-6. Mrs Smith is a highly experienced educator and leader of learning with nearly 20 years’ experience in a number of leading schools including Pymble Ladies College and Newington College and joins us from Wenona School.

Head of Junior School Sport

After a number of years in the role of Head of Junior School Sport, Mr Adrian Carter will return to a full time PDHPE teacher role at Redlands from 2020. Mr Carter has decided to spend more time with his own sons’ sporting commitments from 2020 and in supporting this, we are delighted to retain his expertise on staff as a full time PDHPE teacher on our campus. I acknowledge the significant contribution that Mr Carter has made to the growth of Junior School Sport and his passion and dedication to the students’ enjoyment and participation is noteworthy.

As his replacement, Mr Trevor Dunne will commence as Redlands new Head of Junior School Sport in 2020. Mr Dunne has spent the last 17 years as Sports Master and PDHPE teacher at St. Aloysius College Junior School and brings a wealth of leadership in sport to this role. He has already spent time with Mr Carter and the Sports team as part of the handover and will also bring fresh ideas to this role.

As we finish this term, we express gratitude to the following departing staff:

  • Yr 6 Teacher and Assistant Coordinator, Ms Amber Bidwell, is moving to MLC Burwood, where she has been appointed to the leadership role of Stage Coordinator.
  • Yr 5 Coordinator, Ms Julie Francis is relocating to Perth where she is excited to move back into a boarding school environment as Deputy Head of Boarding at MLC, Perth.
  • Mr Brad Hemopo leaves our PDHPE team to sign up for the New England Freejacks Rugby Union team in the US and is looking forward to starting a professional Rugby career.
  • Mrs Danielle Vitaconcludes concludes her Music teaching contract with us after three terms.
  • Ms Eliza Peirce comes to the end of her part time contract in our PDHPE team.
  • Miss Lily Wickham leaves us as our Gap Year student and begins a Primary Teaching degree at the University of Sydney next year.
  • Mrs Stacey Clarkson will be on maternity leave in 2020 and we look forward to hearing of the safe arrival of her second child early next year.

We wish these teachers continued happiness and fulfilment in their new roles and thank them sincerely for the contributions that they have made to the Redlands community in their time with us.

As 2020 begins, we welcome the following teachers to the Junior School:

  • Mrs Leila Snooks resumes her class teacher role after maternity leave. Mrs Snooks has been back this term but has not taken on a class for just one term so is looking forward to having her own class again.
  • Ms Romy Tobiansky joins us from St. Michael’s Grammar School, Melbourne (also a P-12 co-ed, independent school), where she has been for the last five years. Prior to this, Ms Tobiansky worked at Ravenswood School for a number of years so this move is a return back to Sydney for her.
  • Mr Matthew Price joins us from the Australian International School, Hong Kong, where he has taught for the last few years. He has been living and teaching in Hong Kong for the last decade and is returning to Australia next year to take up this role.
  • Ms Katherine Moses joins our Music team from MLC Burwood, where she is currently teaching Music. Ms Moses will teach Music across the Campus and take a leadership role in the School Strings program.

In addition to these new staff, I am also pleased to confirm that Mr Hugh Brakell and Ms Lyn Wynne have been appointed as Yr 5 Coordinator and Yr 5 Assistant Coordinator respectively from the start of next year. Both Mr Brakell and Ms Wynne have worked successfully together in our Yr 6 team this year and have held leadership roles in their previous schools, prior to joining Redlands. I also thank Ms Francis and Mrs Benneyworth for their leadership as they have served in these roles in acting capacities.

TEDx Video Winners

In our assembly on Monday, we were excited to hear the announcements of the winners of the unique and exciting opportunity presented to our Junior School students last term.

Ahead of TEDxBlighStreet in February 2020, which has the theme of Interconnection, over 30 Junior School students submitted a one minute video connected to the theme.

The opportunity sparked a lot of excitement and two videos were selected to be showcased at this event, which is very exciting for both the School and more importantly, the students.

Congratulations to Yr 4 student, Harrison Tucker and the Yr 3 group of Ari Abe-Apostolou, Liam Randall and William Chee, who created the two winning videos selected by the TEDx team. In addition, we were delighted to also hear that Yr 4 student, Evie Krallis, had her video highly commended and this will join the other two on the TEDxBlighStreet website.

The Junior School students enjoyed watching these brilliant videos in assembly where the wining students were also presented with certificates by Junior School parent, Kat Collins, who is curating the event and to whom I am most grateful to for providing our students with this creative experience and opportunity.

Poetry Writing Success

I was thrilled to hear that Yr 4 student, Rowan Petersen, was awarded a certificate for Excellence in Writing for a poem he submitted in the Write 4 Fun competition. Rowan’s poem was placed in the top 5% of all entries and will be published with other poems next year. Rowan’s poem is shared below and we congratulate him on this recognition.

Hello to the World

“Hello”
It was soft and slow,
It was the first word
I heard

Was it my mummy?
Because I just came out of her tummy.
Or was it my daddy
Or even a baddy

I saw some men in white coats
And they looked like they were on sailing boats
Or maybe I could be dizzy
Because they were very busy

The lights were bright
Which was no delight
It was very loud
So it brought a crowd

They were poking and prodding
Trying to get me nodding,
They were snipping and clipping
Trying to get me licking

Their spirits were soaring
While I was roaring
I was hungry and tired
That’s why I cried

I wanted to snuggle back
Into my mummy’s sack
Where it was quiet and happy
With no need for a nappy

All on the day I was born

Anglicare’s Toys and Tucker Campaign

It has been heart-warming to see the growing array of gifts again underneath the Christmas tree in Junior School reception as we turn our eyes to families in need in Sydney. Redlands has a longstanding connection with Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign and the gifts donated in every Reception at Redlands will make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate in this festive period. Thank you for your generous support.

Junior Black Belt Jujitsu

Congratulations to Yr 6 student, Michael Havryk, who achieved his Junior Black Belt in Jujitsu last weekend. Michael has been training since he was four years of age and is one of the youngest to achieve this level of award.

And finally……

I am grateful to all in our community: staff, students and families, for your support of Redlands in 2019, a year that has continued to see growth in so many ways as we end the decade.

As is sometimes the case, we say goodbye to some in our community and I wish those leaving Redlands much happiness in their next chapter. To our returning families, I will send communication in mid-January ahead of the start of Term 1 2020, which will be on Wednesday 29 January, and we look forward to welcoming students back then.

I wish you all the happiest of festive breaks and memorable time with loved ones at Christmas. The opportunity to disconnect from our daily lives and ‘live in the moment’ with family and friends is something that I rediscovered on my long service leave and would strongly encourage others to consider in the upcoming break.

With very best wishes for 2020.

Head of Preparatory School

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for Prep are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Preparatory School page will consist of general information from the Head of Preparatory School.

End of the School Year

As I write the last Note Day for 2019, it is the close of another busy and rewarding year in the Preparatory School. I would like to thank the Preparatory School community; the wonderful parent body, for their endless support, without which the staff couldn’t have accomplished so many successes with your children. I wish you all a very joyous and blessed Christmas and a lovely summer break affording you the time to rest and reflect on another wonderful year. To assist with your planning for the 2020 holidays, please find below the term dates for next year. Could I please ask that all Preparatory families plan their vacations within the holiday periods, as this ensures a consistent and undisturbed education for your child(ren). I hope that by providing this information before the 2020 school year it allows sufficient time to plan your holidays, fully informed of term dates.

Term 1 – Wednesday 29 January – Friday 9 April
Term 2 – Tuesday 28 April – Friday 26 June
Term 3 – Tuesday 21 July – Thursday 24 September
Term 4 – Monday 12 October – Tuesday 1 December

Prep Picnic Day

Tomorrow we will be holding our annual Prep Picnic Day at North Harbour Reserve. This day is a wonderful tradition for the Preparatory School, where staff and students come together to celebrate and reflect on their year of learning together. All students should be in PE uniform, with a hat and sunscreen applied before school. More details can be found on the Upcoming Events page.

Preparatory School Reports

Preparatory School reports for Semester 2 2019 are now being processed. It has been a pleasure to read about the progress each student has made throughout the Semester. Reading over your child’s report with them is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate achievements in learning and also look toward areas that may need further development. At this stage, it is expected that all Prep School reports will be available to parents in the week following the end of the school year. An SMS will be sent to parents once the reports have been successfully loaded onto Redlands Pulse. To access the reports, parents will need their Redlands Pulse username and password. Parents requiring assistance regarding username or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Prep Presentation Day

Please refer to the recent email detailing uniform requirements for next Tuesday. If you have any questions regarding this, please talk to your class teacher who will be happy to assist.

School commences at the regular time of 8.20am on Tuesday 3 December and parents are asked to return to Dunnet Hall at approximately 9.45am for a 10.00am start. Please make a note of your seat number to ensure you are seated in the correct place and a reminder that no stilettos or beverages are permitted in the Hall. At the conclusion of the concert, at approximately 12.00pm, all children will return to their classroom and be dismissed from their usual dismissal area. Term 4 concludes directly after the concert and all children are to be collected at this time. As previously communicated, OOSH will not be operating for Prep School on this day.

Prep Presentation Day will be filmed this year and a closed link will be available on Redlands Pulse for download in the New Year.

Prep Picnic Day

We will be holding our annual Prep Picnic Day at North Harbour Reserve on Friday 29 November. This day is a tradition for the Preparatory School, where the staff and students celebrate and reflect on their year of learning together. Children are required to come to school at the normal time wearing sports uniform and runners. Please ensure all children have a sun hat and sunscreen. We will be leaving school at 9.00am and travelling to North Harbour Reserve by bus and then returning to school at 12.45pm. Each child is required to bring lunch and a water bottle in a small back pack. Popcorn and a popper will be provided for morning tea, and an ice treat upon returning to school. If you haven’t already done so, please give permission on Redlands Pulse for your child/children to attend before Friday 22 November.

Weekly Results

Basketball

Round 5 was one of the best rounds of Redlands Basketball to date. With 18 wins out of 25 games, we have seen some huge improvements across many of our teams as we hit the half way mark of the season. Our 2nds, 3rds and 4ths Boys all finished the day with a win, while the 1sts Boys had their first loss of the season in a nail-biting three point loss to Redfield in the final seconds of the game. Our 17A, 17B and 17C teams all managed a win, with the 17C Boys having a huge 44-7 victory. The 17D boys showed improvement, however, ended the match with a loss against St Pius. Another clean sweep in the 15 Boys, with all teams winning by margins over 24 points. The 14A Boys were very impressive in Round 5, having only five players for the game due to an injury during warm-up, all five players took the floor with a never give-up attitude. They managed to finish the game with a 33-21 win in what was a great team effort from all players on the floor. The 14B Boys again showed improvement in their game, with a narrow nine point loss against St Pat’s. The 13A, C, D and E Boys all came away from Round 5 with a win, while the 13B didn’t give up in their loss against St Pat’s. The Yr 7 Boys showing this is another very strong age group for Redlands Basketball.

Our 1sts Girls remain undefeated after playing Oakhill on Saturday and hope to build in the coming week before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Schools Championships. Despite losing to the BMGS 1sts team, the 2nds Girls are continuing to show that they can be competitive in a division in which they play many schools top teams. The Inter A Girls also continue their undefeated streak with a huge win over BMGS.  The Inter B Girls had a loss to the Chevalier A team, but similarly to the 2nds, are competing and holding their own against many schools’ Inter A sides. The Junior Bs continue to outplay the competition, with a 66-8 win and the Junior Cs had a very close 17-20 loss against BMGS.

Best of luck to our 1sts Boys and Girls squads who will be travelling to Melbourne from 1-6 December to compete in the 2019 Australian Schools Championships. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be exposed to some of the top Junior Basketball players in the country.

There will be no Basketball training for any teams in Week 8, the final week of school.

Team Photos

We take a number of team photos during the Representative seasons. Advanced Life have these on their website for purchase. Please head to www.advancedlife.com.au (9 digit online code NWL 4NR ETY).

Tennis

Last Saturday saw ten teams play the Finals for the Term 4 NSTA competition. All teams played well, however Teams 7 (Luke and Ben Barwise), 9 (Shaun Patrick, Tamis Hunter, Tom Bradley, Andrew Bruce) and 11 (Xavier Field, Arrav Kumar, Austin Stapleton) proved too good on the day to win their Grand Final matches. Team 7 defeated our own Redlands Team 8 in a hard-fought match. Team 9 out played their opposition, only dropping a couple of games. Team 11 survived a tie breaker to take home the win. Congratulations on a great start to Summer Tennis.

This week, the Redlands 1sts Tennis team have been playing against the top 12 school teams nationally in the Australian Schools Tennis Challenge in Albury. It has been a fantastic week with amazing tennis, sportsmanship and teamwork. The team has been playing two matches a day. In our pool, we have had two very close matches, narrowly being edged out of the match win. We have also played two strong teams, Kelvin Grove State College (QLD) and Marryatville (SA) who showed confidence with shot choice and selection. Following the round matches, all teams enter into playoff matches. Best of luck to the team in their playoffs.

The Grand Slam Tennis coaching team are offering a Tennis Camp (Young Guns High Performance camp) aimed at high performing children in Yrs 5 to 8 in the December/January Summer holidays. Grand Slam Tennis would like to offer the Tennis Camp to the children of Redlands as part of their Tennis development.

Click here for online enrolment or contact Mr Stuart Thompson, Grand Slam Tennis Head Coach.

Touch Football

We had some mixed results with our senior teams, with our 1sts unfortunately going down to Barker College. Our 2nds went down to BMGS, but will be looking for a strong showing in the return fixture next term. Our 3rds and 4ths had some great victories over their respective Barker College opponents. Our 3rds were trailing 1-3 at half time but dug deep in the second half and took the match 4-3. Our 4ths applied some great pressure in defence, forcing errors from Barker and managing to capitalise on these errors, winning 4-1.

Our Junior teams have been showing great improvement each week, with a number of the teams looking to build next term in the run to the finals. Our Junior A, C and D teams travelled to BMGS, in what have proved to be tough games in previous seasons. Our Juniors had a strong 6-2 win which was a great bounce back from the previous week against Oxley College. Our Cs had a great win 4-1 bouncing back from a few draws in previous weeks. Unfortunately, our Junior D team went down 2-7 but showed great spirits throughout their game.

This week will see our 1st, 3rd and 4th Junior A and Junior B teams having a bye. Our 2nds, Junior Cs and Junior Ds will be taking on St Andrew’s at Macquarie University. All game times and fields can be found on the Redland Rhino.

Junior Sport

In a wonderful finale for our sporting year, last weekend our teams were in action all over Sydney and surrounds. Thanks to all players, supporters, spectators and coaches for their contribution to a wonderful year of sport.

With sport changing shape in the Junior School next year and my own role incorporating teaching rather than running the sports program, I take this opportunity to thank all parents and students for their effort in making our sports program a success. I’m a true believer that sport, as well as having clear physical benefits to growing children, is massively impactful in social and emotional development. In the Junior School years, we treat this with real importance and have endeavoured to create an environment where Redlands sport leaves a positive mark on everyone.

IPSHA Girls Basketball

Girls basketballers finish off their short season this weekend at a host of venues across the city. All matches are as the original draw.

IPSHA Mixed Basketball

Our Yrs 3 and 4 basketballers took on Aloysius and Kings, whilst our team went down at Aloysius, excitement ran really high with two tightly contested matches and narrow victories for our A and B teams against Kings in Lang Gym. The increasing depth in the Basketball program shone through as our A-H teams took 7 from 8 matches against Newington, losing only a single match and that one by a point in a tremendously exciting E game.

Cricket

Redlands cricketers again enjoyed conditions on the Redlands Junior Campus Oval and despite going down to a very strong Riverview team, showed plenty of potential and even more fight, pluck and courage facing some fierce bowling.

Tennis

Redlands Tennis finished last weekend with more great play against Trinity at Trinity. Callum Zhu and Leonardo Vaccarrezza were rewarded with coaches awards and led the way with both singles and doubles wins. Meanwhile 14 students from our next ranked positions played a morning of matches and had a ball, playing up to six matches in the morning and developing match play skills, preparing already for an assault on the top rankings in 2020.

2020 Sports Dates

A 2020 sports calendar with all trainings, trial matches and events has been uploaded to Redlands Pulse. It’s a working document with some additions made as they come to hand, but should be able to give everyone an idea of the 2020 sporting landscape.

Student Achievements

Our lovely Pre-Primary and Primary Transition Ballet students had their ‘in class’ presentation on Tuesday. All students were absolutely beautiful.

EOYC

We wish our Ballet and Dance students all the very best for the upcoming End of Year Concert on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November at the Concourse. They have worked so hard throughout the year and it is sure to be a wonderful experience for all. If anyone is still in need of a ticket please contact the Ballet and Dance office. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Make Up Requirements

As in previous years, all make up for the Preparatory and Junior school students is provided and applied by Redlands staff and parent volunteers on the day of the Concert. However, we do have a number of students with allergies and therefore we do offer the option of students bringing their own make up on the day.

All students need to bring their own black mascara. Any black mascara will do, however we do recommend Maybelline Sensational Lash, as its tends to be smudge proof and longer wearing.

For those students who wish to bring their own make up, we are applying a pink lipstick for Cinderella (Ballet – Act 1) and red for Jazz, Contemporary and Tap (Act 2). The red lipstick is a typical fire engine red and can be found across any brand of lipstick. The pink lipstick is a softer rose inspired pink. Suggestions are Rose Records (Rimmel), Softsilver Rose (Revlon) and Raspberry Ripple (Sports Girl).

Both the Rimmel and Revlon lipsticks can be found at any Priceline or Chemist Warehouse.

The eye shadow we will apply to all students is a subtle pink-light brown smoky eye. Again this is a common eye shadow palette found across all make up brands. A few suggestions that can be purchased from Priceline, Chemist Warehouse or even your local supermarket are Revlon 505 Decadent and Maybelline City Mini Palette.

If you have any questions regarding make up please don’t hesitate to contact me: virginiaclayton@mac.com.

Concert Volunteers

Thank you to everyone for signing up for the Concert. The SignUp Genius link has been sent to volunteers to pick their chosen volunteer time slots on Concert Days. We also require post Concert support in the week starting 2, 3, 4 and 5 December. This will include sorting and washing for the Concert. You can sign up for this too in the SignUp Genius link.

The Year That Was

The Music Department would like to take this opportunity to thank the parent community for all their support throughout the year and in providing their child with the wonderful opportunity to learn a musical instrument and explore their singing voices. In reflecting on the year passed, we would like to take the time to acknowledge students enrolled in the Academic Music program, individuals who take weekly Music tuition lessons and all Redlands musicians who work collaboratively as part of the Music Ensembles program. In recognising these successes, we look forward to celebrating many musical achievements in the various end of year performances over the coming week. We would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of our Specialist Music staff who work tirelessly to create exciting and inspiring musical learning experiences. The role of leading professional musicians in delivering weekly rehearsals is integral to the ongoing successes of the Music program at Redlands.

Staff News

It is with much sadness that we farewell Anne Marie Braid (Violin), Danielle Vita (Academic Music P-6), Alexandra and Paul Jones (Flute) at the end of this year. All these members of our team have been key teachers in their areas of specialisation and have exuded immense passion for teaching and learning, while supporting students of all levels throughout their Music studies.

As valued members of our team, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Anne Marie, Alexandra, Danielle and Paul for the many years of collective service and dedication to the musical learning of students here at Redlands. All these teachers have been inspirational educators within our team, demonstrating incredible expertise and professionalism, and we would like to wish them all the very best with their new and exciting endeavours.

Joining the Music Department in January 2020 will be accomplished educator and Strings specialist, Mrs Katherine Moses, who will take up the role of P-6 Music teacher and MIC of Strings. Katherine has recently been teaching at Methodist Ladies College (MLC School) in Burwood, is an experienced Kodály Music teacher and accomplished cellist and we look forward to welcoming her to our team next year. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Ms Mar’yana Sywak for her support of the Strings program this year in the capacity of Acting MIC of Strings. The Music community is advised that the department is currently interviewing for replacement Music tutors to support the specialisation of Violin, French Horn and Flute. More information regarding the staffing of these various studios will be provided before the end of the year.

Ensemble Participation, Attendance and Punctuality at Rehearsals

Many ensembles are currently rehearsing and preparing repertoire for end of year events. A reminder that regular, punctual attendance at all Music Ensemble rehearsals is imperative as students are underway in preparing for end of year events. Speech Day and Carols – Additional Rehearsals

Throughout Weeks 7 and 8, Co-Curricular Music Ensembles students will be concentrating on additional combined rehearsals for both the Carols Service and the Annual Speech Day/Night. In piecing together challenging repertoire, various ensembles will be combining throughout the school week in readiness for these events. For detailed rehearsal schedule please refer to the Secondary Carols and Speech Night Music Rehearsals Letter on the portal.

As students will be involved in school-time rehearsal sessions, please note that all regular morning, lunchtime and afternoon Secondary Co-Curricular Music Ensembles are cancelled for Week 8. Rehearsal arrangements for The Big Top Luna Park on Wednesday 4 December will be communicated as separate Student Information Letter at the conclusion of Week 7.

We would like to congratulate the Secondary School Rock Bands who performed at recess and lunch and thank Mathew Owen (MIC Small Ensembles) and Rock Band Specialists David Wooltorton, Nathaniel Smith and Peter Atkins for their excellent overseeing of this program throughout 2019. In advance of the 2020 Battle of the Bands, students are advised that the theme for this event will be Music of the 80’s.

Junior and Secondary Carols Services

The Junior and Secondary School Carols Services are being held in Robert Dunnet Hall this week, as coordinated by the School Chaplains in conjunction with the Music Department. This end of year gathering for the school community is an important time in reflecting and celebrating our heritage as a school in approach of the festive season. We would like to acknowledge the Junior and Secondary School musicians who have invested time rehearsing and refining repertoire for these events. It is such a wonderful opportunity for our musicians to perform in front of their peers and the wider school community. Thanks to our MIC’s of Ensembles, conductors and accompanists for their role in preparing the students for these performances.
