Music Awards Dinner

Last Friday evening, the Music Department and the Friends of Music, hosted the annual Redlands Music Awards Dinner attended by over 200 students, staff and parents.

This event is designed as a celebration of student achievement within the Cocurricular Ensemble program, presenting students with a variety of awards across all Year Groups. In Yrs 8-11, these awards are presented to individuals, as voted by Music staff, for contribution in the areas of Service, Dedication and Leadership and an award to a student who demonstrated outstanding Excellence in Music. Yr 7 students received Certificates of Participation and Yr 12 students received a Graduates Portfolio acknowledging their contribution to the Music program over many years of involvement.

In providing a new learning opportunity for students in developing a rich performance program for this event, this term the Department divided the Core Music Ensemble program into smaller groups to explore Chamber Music repertoire. In scaffolding these groups across all Year Groups, it was enriching to observe Yrs 11 and 12 students lead these groups during weekly rehearsals in readiness for performance. The integration of Yr 7 students performing alongside Yr 12 students is such an important dimension of the Redlands Music Ensemble environment and the students certainly demonstrated high level skills of commitment, excellence and leadership in their achievements this term.

In supporting this program offering, we would like to acknowledge the overseeing roles of Mrs Hilary Luck (MIC Bands), Mr Mathew Owen (MIC Small Ensembles), Mrs Mar’yana Sywak (Acting MIC Strings) and Ms Arienne Brodie (MIC Performance). It is wonderful to observe rich and varied performance contexts emerging from these areas within the Redlands Music Ensemble program.

Our special guest on the evening was Principal, Dr Peter Lennox, who was delighted to present students with their 2019 awards and, as part of his closing remarks, acknowledged the exceptional achievements of all our Redlands musicians for their wonderful contributions to the life of the school. Congratulations to the following students in Yrs 8-11 as recipients of the 2019 Music Awards.

Yr 8: Mitchell Turner (Service), Jamison Houchell (Leadership), Jack Lazzarotto (Dedication), Kokoro Sawa (Excellence)

Yr 9: Charlotte Harman (Service), Callum Wardman-Browne (Leadership), Izaac Nisbet (Dedication), Sophia Maxwell (Excellence)

Yr 10: Bethany Richardson (Service), Katharine Keller (Leadership), Lucy McLaren (Dedication) Alex Kim (Excellence)

Instrumental Competition Auditions (Week 10)

Please note: Entries are only accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.

The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece will not be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist.
