RPFA Second Hand Uniform Sales

Thank you to the RPFA Committee and all parent volunteers who are involved in organising the Second Hand Uniform Sale taking place on Sunday 15 September on the Junior Campus, undercover carpark, Allister Street. Without your support and dedication this event, which is beneficial to many of our families, would not be possible.

“The RPFA very much appreciates any donation of surplus, used or outgrown school uniforms. Organising this Sale supports both sustainability and a good cause as proceeds from this Sale are dedicated to the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.” Michelle Tea, RPFA President 2019.

Football

Three of the girls Football teams featured in the Finals at Blacktown over the weekend. The Inter A Girls were up first against the minor premiers, Barker. Our girls got off to a strong start and despite a great shot on goal, we were unable to convert. Barker then displayed some great passages of play which saw two quick goals for them, finishing the game with a 3-0 win. Our girls should be very proud of their efforts against a very strong Barker side.

The 2nds Girls were up next and only had 12 players ready to take the field due to the clash with the State Snowsports Championships. Off to a great start, Olivia Hatch scored the first goal of the match as Redlands dominated the possession. Unfortunately, the lack of substitutes had players covering a lot of ground in the hot conditions. As the game wore on, Barker started to see more of the ball and mid-way through the second half Barker saw their first goal. With less than ten minutes to go, Barker were able to score a second goal to end the game 2-1. Well done to our girls who, for the majority of the game, appeared to be the stronger team.

The 1sts Girls were the final match of the day in what would be a tough game against a very skilled Barker team. The game was fiercely competitive from the kick-off seeing two evenly matched teams fighting for possession. At the half time whistle, the score was 0-0. Our girls regrouped and started the second half clearly looking like the stronger team, creating many scoring opportunities but being unable to convert. The final whistle sounded with the game tied at 0-0 and we headed into extra time. At the end of the extra time, the score was still 0-0 which led to a penalty shoot-out. After the first three players from each team, Barker was up 3-2. We needed to score or Barker would take out the game. We converted and as it was tied 3-3, Barker’s next player stepped up. A great save from Goalkeeper Jasmine Black saw our next chance to win the game. The ball went straight into the back of the net to give Redlands the 1sts Girls Football Championship trophy. A great end to a very exciting game and an excellent season for 1sts Girls Football.

Congratulations to the entire Girls Football program for winning the overall Girls Football Shield for 2019.

Please book your tickets to the End of Season Football Presentation. The presentation evening will be held at Dee Why RSL on Friday 6 September, 6.30pm arrival for 7.00pm start.

Hockey

Last weekend saw the conclusion to the Hockey season with both the Girls 2nds and 3rds winning their respective ISA Division Grand Finals.

Our 2nds won their Grand Final last Saturday 5-0 against Oxley. The girls played their best game for the season, with a lot of very good hockey on turf. The girls played very well, combining with an all round outstanding team performance.

The mighty 3rds had a nail biting Grand Final against CCGS, all of their training over the season led up to this one game! Every single girl fought hard and played to win, two early goals were scored in the first half. The second half was an intense fight to stay on top, our defence has never looked so strong. The game finished with a sensational win 2-0.

It has been an outstanding season and the girls are extremely deserving of their premiership win!

Following the games, we returned to Campus where we held the Hockey Presentation BBQ Lunch. The season awards for each team are as follows:

Senior Player of the Year – Renata Ferreira (Yr 11)
Junior Player of the Year – Sophie McMillan (Yr 9)

Girls 1sts

Netball

Last weekend brought a premature end to our NSNA Competition, with some close Semi Final losses meaning our teams did not progress through to the Preliminary Finals. Our 9A team unfortunately went down to Monte, but have shown great improvement throughout the year in what has been a very strong 15A competition. The Yr 9C team were also out to progress to the next stage with the majority of this team playing Finals the last few years at NSNA. They were out to dominate early against Monte with the scores being close for the first three quarters. The final quarter saw both teams going score for score which was going to be a tough finish, unfortunately Monte got the better of the girls late in the 4th quarter and took the match. Our 8B team played Maccabi in their Semi Final, a team who they had beaten once previously after they had been re-graded. This was a tightly contested match between both sides and proved to be a real nail biter coming down to the last quarter again, with Maccabi holding a tight lead managing to take the match 18 – 23. Our 7Ds were up against SGHS, splitting the two matches during the regular season with one win and one loss. This Semi Final was going to be a tight contest, the girls were focused from the outset, moving the ball up the court well to keep the game close for the 1st quarter. Unfortunately SGHS stepped up a gear in the 2nd quarter and our girls tried to hold them, trying to claw back, this was not to be with the girls eventually going down by nine.

Our Senior 4th had a tough Grand Final match against an Oakhill team who had been the top of the table all year. Oakhill managed to get a lead of around nine during the 2nd quarter and, after some tough half-time words, the girls came out firing in the 3rd quarter scoring the first five goals to bring the lead back to four which set up for an exciting end. Unfortunately Oakhill then stepped up a level which proved to be the difference.

The Redland Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 12 September at Norths Leagues Club.

From the Principal

It was a wonderful end to the ISA Winter Sports season last Saturday with Finals successes in Girls Football and Hockey to add to the Tennis successes from the previous weekend. Our Girls 1sts Football won the Division 1 Final and our 2nd and 3rd Hockey teams were also crowned ISA Champions.

I attended all three Girls Football Finals and in each game our teams were pitted against Barker College. Our Inter A team, composed of players from Years 7-10 had to contend with a Barker team of all Year 10 girls. Our girls fought hard and made Barker work for their victory. Our 2nd team had a close result with a single goal the difference.

The Girls 1sts game was a thrilling game to watch. Redlands has contested this Final several times previously, but has never won. The cracking pace at which the game began continued to full time and the skills of the players on both sides was of a standard that I have not watched before. Barker had not lost a game this season.

At full time the two sides remained 0-0, so it was to be extra time with five minutes in each direction. Sucking in the oxygen, the game continued with shots on goal from each side. Ten minutes later, still 0-0! It was the closest and best standard of Girls 1sts Finals that I have had the pleasure of watching.

Now it was down to a penalty shoot-out. Nerves on edge both on and off the field. It was great to have a good crowd of supporters, staff, parents and fellow-students from both schools supporting on the sideline.

The evenness continued, with shots hitting the netting, being saved by two excellent goal-keepers and only one each off target. The sixth round arrived. The Barker shot was saved and then ours hit the back of the net. For the first time Redlands had its name on a Shield that has been won by Barker from 2009-2016 (when the Shield’s history began), until Oakhill in the past two years. We were all so proud of our girls for their self-belief, courage and effort.

The overall standard among our A teams this year (Junior As, Inter As and Firsts) has also led to the overall Shield for Girls Football returning to Redlands for the second time, with the previous time being in 2009. That shield has been dominated since then by Central Coast Grammar with only Chevalier winning it twice. With many of the team still at school next year and a Year 7 goalkeeper, we should have a bright future.

Last week our Snowsports team of 83 competed in the NSW Interschools at Perisher. In total the team achieved 28 podium places – 16 team and 12 individual – with 7 Gold, 8 Silver and 13 Bronze medals. Congratulations to all competitors and especially to the NSW Champions:

Team Gold

Div 2 Boys Snowboard
Div 3 Girls Moguls

Individual Gold

George Murphy – Div 2 Boys Moguls
Daisy Thomas – Div 3 Girls Moguls, Div 3 Girls Slopestyle Ski
Sienna Wessels – Div 3 Girls Snowboard
Avie Keller – Div 5 Girls Moguls

I make special mention of Sienna Wessels (Yr 8) who won 7 medals – 4 individual and 3 team – representing the School in the Alpine, Skier Cross, Moguls, Snowboard and Snowboard Cross categories.

As a result of their State achievements, 40 members of the Snowsports team will now go on to represent the School at the National Interschools next week at Mt Buller. We wish them all the best.

I sincerely thank all of the coaches, parents and Sports Administrators, who have supported the students in this Winter season.

This week we have a fine exhibition of Visual Art on display in Redlands Hall which illustrates the creative and technical skills of our Junior and Secondary students in their curriculum and cocurricular Visual Art classes. Also on display are the works by our HSC students whose works will now be stored until marking time comes around. There will also be a display of the Year 12 IB Visual Arts work later this term. Thank you to all our Visual Art teachers who provide a very stimulating program for our students and work hard to set up these two annual exhibitions.

Winter Sports Update

Our Winter Sports season came to a close with some exciting fixtures this past weekend; we congratulate the 2nds and 3rds Girls Hockey teams, as well as Girls 1st XI Football team, for winning their respective Grand Finals on Saturday. There was a great atmosphere at the Girls Football Final out at Blacktown with a number of staff, students and parents in attendance supporting the team in their match against Barker. It was a tense affair with the game tied 0-0 after regulation and overtime. In the ensuing penalty shootout, it took until the 7th penalty kick for Redlands to finally win the match in thrilling fashion. This was the first time Redlands won the Girls Football 1st XI Premiership, and we also won the overall Girls Football Shield as the best performing Girls Football program in the ISA across all age groups. Congratulations to all winter sports participants on an excellent season.

Yrs 3 – 12 HSC Visual Arts Exhibition

Last night I was honoured to open the Yrs 3 – 12 HSC Visual Arts Exhibition. (The Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition will be held in Week 9.) It was wonderful to see the wide array of artistic works from Junior School students all the way through to Yr 12 HSC students’ major works. As I have said numerous times over the past three years (and once again last night), I am very proud to be part of a school that truly celebrates the arts like Redlands does. Last night once again illustrated that students have a safe place to express themselves through the arts at Redlands where they can both share a bit of themselves and also their views of the world around them in moving, inspiring and sometimes challenging ways.

Yr 12 Music Showcase

On Monday evening I attended the Yr 12 HSC and IB Music Showcase where our talented musicians had one final opportunity to perform their Major Works to an external audience. While I was once again impressed by the wide range and outstanding quality of their performances, I was also excited to see that even at this final stage of their respective HSC or IB journeys, the students’ joy of music-making was still shining through for all to see and hear. I look forward to hearing many of these pieces again at some of the final Yr 12 events in the weeks ahead.

Yr 7 Inter-House Debating

Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we held our inaugural Yr 7 Inter-House Debating Competition. It was wonderful to see teams of Yr 7 debaters, coached and assisted by our senior debaters, representing our four Houses in debates through the week. I would like to congratulate Cowper and Dumolo for progressing to the final on Friday with Dumolo taking out the shield in a high quality debate, adjudicated by one of our Redlands Debating alumni, Maddie Lawrence (2016). The Yr 7 Inter-House Debating Competition was another illustration of the strong development of Debating at the School over the past few years with not only a number of excellent results, but more importantly, an increase in student numbers and greater Debating opportunities across the program. I would like to thank Ms Simone Bryant for all of her efforts leading the Debating program at Redlands.

Debating

SDN Competition

Congratulations to the Yr 10, Yr 9, Yr 7, Primary B and Primary A teams who all had wins against Roseville last Friday.

This week is an away debate at Stella Maris. An email will be sent to all with venue details once we receive them from the school. The bus will leave the Adams Centre at 3.30pm with Mr Ockenden accompanying the students.

Yr 7 Inter-House Debates

The Yr 7 Inter-House debates had a nail biting finish when Dumolo debated Cowper that students should vote for Principals in schools. The model that the affirmative produced was very clever in saying that the School Board would shortlist candidates and then provide information to students on how to vote. We are very thankful for Redlander Maddie Lawrence who ably adjudicated the debate. It was so nice to have her give up her time so her alma mater could benefit from her Debating expertise.

Special thanks to Ela Kos and Aleisha Lawrence who took on a major role in running the event and to the coaches from Yr 10 and Yr 11 who spent a lot of time prepping their teams. Aleisha Lawrence, Sirena Scotting, James Watson and Theo Mirlees-Black were able to guide and inspire their teams.

Winter School

It was State race week this past week and there was much activity around Campus. Congratulations to all the students who made the Redlands Nationals team after a busy week at State competition.

Academic classes have continued to go well as many students are now making great use of the optional Friday and Sunday night Prep times for their studies.

Most students have now had the opportunity to do some training in the terrain park with their instructors. To help develop these skills we’ve also had specific ski and snowboard park instructors on the weekends so students are able to improve their skills on rails, jumps and other terrain park obstacles.

Saturday night was great fun as students and staff tuned their singing voices for Karaoke Night.

There was a mixture of classics and some much newer songs, with some great singing from everyone throughout the night.

“Karaoke night was a fun night that most people enjoyed. I had a good time with all the singing.” Tom Hartnell.

“Mr Gregory’s cover of Bat Out of Hell will hopefully be demonstrated at the final dinner. I think a little peer pressure should do the job. In short, Karaoke Night will certainly not be forgotten..” Callum Wardman-Browne.

The evening wrapped up with a huge dance off to the timeless Village People classic, YMCA.

On Sunday, everyone had the option to either have a full day of free skiing or a picnic at the trout hatchery. Students at the hatchery enjoyed playing frisbee and watching the trout splash around in the river.

“It was a lot of fun playing frisbee, eating food and spending time with friends on a Sunday and get to sleep in and rest. It was also interesting to see the fish and get to feed them.” Ella Delaney.

Thank you to Helen who organised a great barbeque lunch and delicious rocky road for those at the picnic. On Sunday afternoon students had free time then enjoyed the final movie of a multi-week Harry Potter marathon.

This coming weekend is the Exeat weekend and we wish our students and their families a fun and safe weekend and look forward to their return on Monday.

Final Weeks

During our Year Meeting earlier this week, all the students were reminded of the importance for them to make the most of the final weeks at school by working closely with their teachers and maximising their learning experiences. As parents, you can continue to encourage your son or daughter to try and maintain a healthy diet, get good sleep and take some regular exercise, as this will aid in their focus. Above all, I hope the students enjoy their last weeks of school and finish on a high note knowing they have tried to do their very best.

News

Congratulations to our musicians for participating in the 2019 Yr 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate Music Showcase held on Monday this week. This concert was the final opportunity for students to present their repertoire, prior to assessment by NSW Education Standards Authority and as part of the recording process for submission to the International Baccalaureate Organisation.

The Yrs 3- 12 Visual Arts Exhibition was open from Tuesday to Thursday this week, with opening night on Wednesday. I popped in to see the work of our art students and it’s incredible!

While I am writing this Note Day, the HSC Drama students are doing their final performance at the Adams Centre and the IB Dance students are filming their Dance component in Parkes Hall. They have been working diligently and passionately on preparing their pieces for performance. I hope and trust it all goes well.

A big thank you to all parents supporting students through this stressful period with your time and emotional investment.

Division 1 ISA Girls Champions

Last Saturday,  Rebecca Fauby, Alice MacDonald, Anika Misir, Anika Ramasamy, Sydney Stuckman and their team won the Division 1 ISA Football Girls Championship. Their fitness, skills, determination and passion to play for our school was incredible to watch. This is a historic moment, not only because it is the first time that the girls triumphed in the finals, but also the first time Redlands won the overall Girls Championship Shield for all age groups in Girls Football.

Study Skills with Dr Prue Salter

On Monday 2 September, all Yr 12 students will attend The Year 12 Countdown with Dr Prue Salter from 9.00-10.15am in Redlands Hall. Interesting Article of the Week

please read

This week, remembering how tiring it is trying to be a parent and work full time, I found this article which made me laugh a little and realise that there are many parents going through the same scenarios every day. I hope you enjoy the read!

Winter School

It was fantastic to see the large number of Yr 9 students at Winter School last week and spend time with them both in the classroom and on the slopes. They all appear to be having an amazing time and developing close friendships with their peers. The staff looking after them are incredibly caring and professional and I am sure that the experience will lead to wonderful life-long memories for the students.

This Week

A huge thank you goes out to the Coordinator of Debating, Mrs Simone Bryant, the Debating Captain, Ela Kos and the Debating coaches, James Watson and Aleisha Lawrence. Getting in the Habit

This week, students are beginning to read the first chapter of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. Students have access to an online flipbook and will be starting an online journal to reflect on various readings throughout the book. In your next conversation with your child, ask them about Paradigms and Principles  and the baby steps they will take this week in preparation for Habit 1.

Other Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • We appreciate your support in reminding students to always lock their personal belongings in their locker with a working lock. Many students are leaving belongings in Liggins Quad and, inadvertently, items are being picked up by other students. It is important we manage and take responsibility for our own items. Thank you for your support.
  • Next Friday, Yr 7 begins their first week organising Service committees.  Students have expressed interest in building awareness for several different organisations and will be fundraising for Toys for Tucker and Guide Dogs Australia over the next few months. We focus on our immediate community in Yr 7 and begin to develop an understanding of and appreciation for giving back and contributing to something bigger than ourselves. Thank you in advance for any additional discussions taking place at home to help support these initiatives.
  • This is a reminder that all Assessment notifications are released to parents and students at least two weeks prior to the due date. Students are alerted of these notifications through iLearn and parents are able to access them in the Parent Portal.

Book Week

Thank you to Junior School students and staff for embracing Book Character Day last Thursday. We raised $415.80 on Book Character Day, which will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Following the wonderful author visit from Jack Heath the previous week for Yrs 5 and 6, the culmination of Book Week saw acclaimed author, Jacqueline Harvey, entertain Yrs 3 and 4 with some wonderful stories. As a former primary school teacher, Jacqueline had no trouble engaging the students and their roars of laughter could be heard down the corridors of the Campus.

My thanks are extended to Mrs Wiebe for organising these guest author visits, which the students (and teachers) loved.

Snowsports Success

Last week, a number of Junior School students were involved in the NSW State Interschools Snowsports Championships. The commitment from the students, their families and staff involved is considerable and much appreciated and acknowledged. Mr Carter will speak of their achievements in our assembly next Monday but I extend my congratulations to the Junior School students involved in this high level of competition: Toby Anderson, Isabelle Bannon, Nicholas Benz, Oliver Benz, Lachlan Bourne, Sam Bourne, Hugo Burton, Julianna Harrington, Avie Keller, Hamish Kennedy, Saffron McVeigh, Ryan O’Connell, Beau Potter, Arkie Riches, Robbie Smith, Alex To and Eloise To.

Monty Pryor Visit

On Monday, our Yr 6 students were guided and entertained by a visit from Monty Pryor whose annual day with Yr 6 is a highlight in the Year Group’s calendar. Some of the students have shared their experience below alongside some of the images of the day.

Aneke Golowenko – “Our painting is really unique. It represents us as we have incorporated our handprints as butterflies. I have learned that even with the diversity of our group we can still work together to create something amazing.”

Sofia Vincent – “It was great learning about how the aboriginal people grew up. We incorporated different skin colours into our painting.”

Charlie Gordon – “It is amazing that the stories can be passed down from so long ago. The story we painted is 30, 000 years old, but we are painting it today.”

Oliver Cooke – “It was interesting to hear aboriginal stores that are so old, but have been passed onto us in 2019.

Yrs 3-12 Visual Arts Exhibition

Last night, I joined families from Junior and Secondary School at the wonderful opening of the Yrs 3-12 Visual Arts Exhibition, which showcased the 2019 Yr 12 HSC Bodies of Work. This is always a wonderful opportunity to see student artwork from Yr 3 upwards and it was lovely to see and enjoy both the range and progressive quality of art on show. My thanks are extended to Junior School Visual Arts teacher, Ms Reinhold, for her passionate teaching and support in exhibiting some wonderful Junior School art at this exhibition.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

This year, we have been embedding the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach across our Junior Campus. PBL supports the creation of safe, respectful and engaged learning environments in which behavioural expectations are clearly outlined for students and hinge on a range of supportive classroom strategies. You may have noticed our Classroom and Playground Behavioural Expectation posters on display. An aspect of this approach includes ensuring effective partnerships with parents. If a student’s behaviour disrupts the teaching and learning experience for themselves, or others, a series of holistic interventions will be implemented by teachers.

However, should these strategies not produce an improvement, the student may be directed to a re-focus space to reflect on their behaviour and re-set with further teacher support. Should your child require time in the re-focus space during their learning, teachers will communicate this to parents in the form of a small note or reflection template attached within your child’s student planner. This gives parents the opportunity to talk with children about their behavioural choices and support positive behavioural development. Mrs Kourakis, our Dean of Students, has presented information sessions over the year and the slides from these presentations can be found on Redlands Pulse. In addition, a summary of our PBL processes will be included in next year’s student planners for parents to reference. If you would like to know more about PBL please contact our Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis.

Spanish News

The Education Perfect Language World Championships commenced on Tuesday 27 August and will run until 4.00pm, Tuesday 3 September. During this time, students from all around the world will learn Spanish and other languages, while earning points towards awards and maybe even prizes.

All students in the Junior School are registered to participate. To compete, all students need to do is answer Spanish language questions on Education Perfect. Points are awarded for all questions except self-marked questions.

As an added incentive for Redlands Junior School students, a pizza or churros party will take place for the ten highest scoring students in each Year Group from Yrs 3 to 6. Education Perfect have also provided iTunes vouchers for the top scoring student in each of these years.

I encourage all students to participate to improve their Spanish skills and have fun in this exciting and motivating competition. ¡Buena Suerte!

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature 2019 Success

We thrilled to hear that two of our Junior School students, Georgia Slack (Yr 4) and Rory Hobbs (Yr 5) were shortlisted in this year’s Mosman Youth Awards in Literature competition, a wonderful achievement in itself. The annual contest, now in its 27th year, has been one where many Redlands students have been shortlisted in previous years and at last night’s awards presentation, Georgia’s written piece was placed 1st in her age group.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for Redlands House/Transition/Prep are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Redlands House/Transition Gold page will consist of general information from the Head of Preparatory School.

Pop-Up Playground

Transition Gold were kindly invited by Kindergarten Red and Yellow to build a pop-up playground in the Piazza. Whilst the idea of a playground being constructed and then taken down was perplexing to some students, they relished in the fun of building their own playground using loose parts: big boxes, pipes, string, tyres, guttering and sticks. When they had finished, each group provided an explanation of their creation. Loose parts play supports invention, divergent thinking, problem solving and offers a sense of wonder to children. The versatility of these materials provides children with virtually endless ways to create. Access to a variety of transient materials during play and exploration aids in the development of creative thinking, engineering and problem solving.

Redlands Uniform

All students attending Redlands, including Redlands House, are expected to wear the appropriate school uniform. The full school uniform also includes suitably styled hair, conservative, off the collar and ears for boys and if below the collar, tied up with a navy ribbon for girls. Adhering to these requirements assists in a hygienic and safe environment for staff and students to learn together. Please talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions pertaining to this.

Vacation Care

Junior Sport

Redlands Athletics Team

I have never been prouder of a bunch of Redlands students for their efforts in a Carnival yesterday. The Redlands Athletics team showed amazing courage and determination in some of the tightest finishes I’ve seen at HICES Athletics over the years. Led by Sports Captains Stella Simpson Morgan and Lachlan Carmichael, our team narrowly missed the championship, finishing second by the narrowest of margins to Central Coast Grammar.

Lachie in particular led from the front and whilst we’re still waiting on official individual results will undoubtedly qualify in numerous events after finishing first, dominating in some events and out-gritting some really tough opponents.

Our boys were particularly strong, Joel Daily again breaking records. Joel’s 4.40m Long Jump set a new mark for all HICES Schools for Junior Boys. He then anchored the 4x100m Junior Boys relay to a new HICES record of 1.00.03. Joel along with Daniel and Jeffrey Benoleil and Ash Corn go into the HICES record books as the fastest Junior Boys team of all time!

Netball

Semi Finals time is always tough and as one would expect, the games are close and emotions run high. Our Redlands 18 team battled hard last Friday night in their elimination Semi Final, but just came up short, losing 9-5. Big improvers this season, the R13 girls, pushed hard all game and the result is a true reflection of their evolution this season. The final result closer than their last match up.

Redlands 13 live to fight another day after narrowly going down last Saturday morning. Up against the first place finisher and a team they haven’t beaten all season. Our girls were right in it, losing by just a point. They have another chance to reach the Grand Final with a knockout Semi Final match this Saturday.

IPSHA Gymnastics

Our After School Gymnastics Club has entered into the IPSHA Gymnastics Carnival in Term 4 and are looking for any club level 3 or above gymnasts who are keen to represent Redlands at this Carnival. The team will train Mondays during lunchtime in the leadup. Any interested gymnasts should contact juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au for information.

Girls’ AFL

The Girls AFL juggernaut continues to roll with all of our three teams playing hotly contested footy. The skills and match play continue to improve week to week and judging by the smiles – our girls are having a blast! Pictured at top.

Snowsports

There were great results from our Junior School Snowsports teams at Perisher last week. More details are available in Mr Campbell’s Snowsports wrap, but rest assured Redlands skiiers owned the mountain.

Photos

We love having photos on display and to help archive our seasons, anyone who has any action shots they’re proud of and willing to share, please forward to acarter@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Music Awards Dinner

Last Friday evening, the Music Department and the Friends of Music, hosted the annual Redlands Music Awards Dinner attended by over 200 students, staff and parents.

This event is designed as a celebration of student achievement within the Cocurricular Ensemble program, presenting students with a variety of awards across all Year Groups. In Yrs 8-11, these awards are presented to individuals, as voted by Music staff, for contribution in the areas of Service, Dedication and Leadership and an award to a student who demonstrated outstanding Excellence in Music. Yr 7 students received Certificates of Participation and Yr 12 students received a Graduates Portfolio acknowledging their contribution to the Music program over many years of involvement.

In providing a new learning opportunity for students in developing a rich performance program for this event, this term the Department divided the Core Music Ensemble program into smaller groups to explore Chamber Music repertoire. In scaffolding these groups across all Year Groups, it was enriching to observe Yrs 11 and 12 students lead these groups during weekly rehearsals in readiness for performance. The integration of Yr 7 students performing alongside Yr 12 students is such an important dimension of the Redlands Music Ensemble environment and the students certainly demonstrated high level skills of commitment, excellence and leadership in their achievements this term.

In supporting this program offering, we would like to acknowledge the overseeing roles of Mrs Hilary Luck (MIC Bands), Mr Mathew Owen (MIC Small Ensembles), Mrs Mar’yana Sywak (Acting MIC Strings) and Ms Arienne Brodie (MIC Performance). It is wonderful to observe rich and varied performance contexts emerging from these areas within the Redlands Music Ensemble program.

Our special guest on the evening was Principal, Dr Peter Lennox, who was delighted to present students with their 2019 awards and, as part of his closing remarks, acknowledged the exceptional achievements of all our Redlands musicians for their wonderful contributions to the life of the school. Congratulations to the following students in Yrs 8-11 as recipients of the 2019 Music Awards.

Yr 8: Mitchell Turner (Service), Jamison Houchell (Leadership), Jack Lazzarotto (Dedication), Kokoro Sawa (Excellence)

Yr 9: Charlotte Harman (Service), Callum Wardman-Browne (Leadership), Izaac Nisbet (Dedication), Sophia Maxwell (Excellence)

Yr 10: Bethany Richardson (Service), Katharine Keller (Leadership), Lucy McLaren (Dedication) Alex Kim (Excellence)

Yr 11: Emily Colvin (Service), Cara Eccleston (Leadership), Abigail Cragun (Dedication), Luke Brown (Dedication), Thomas Wightwick (Excellence)

In bringing together the logistics surrounding this event, we would like to extend our thanks to Music Administration for working collaboratively to bring all the elements together, extending particular thanks to Music Administrator, Ms Pip Tame, Friends of Music President, Mrs Emma McLaren, and the ongoing support of the Friends of Music Committee.

Special mention to Redlands Performing Arts Captains, Asha Boswarva (Arts Captain), Matilda Rose Williams (Choir Captain), Tara Sahagian (Bands Captain), Ilann Labouze (Small Ensembles Captain), and Danver Feng Zhao (Strings Captain) as excellent comperes for the evening.

Instrumental Competition Auditions (Week 10)

Please note: Entries are only accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.

The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece will not be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist.
