HICES Music Festival

Over the past few days, students from Yrs 5-8 represented Redlands at the 2019 HICES Music Festival. After completing a thorough audition process last term, these students were selected by an external panel of conductors, to participate in this three day intensive Music Camp held at Stanwell Tops. Alongside other musicians from Independent Coeducational Schools from around NSW, they prepared a wide range of repertoire to present at the Festival Concert held at the Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday evening.

In concluding the concert, the massed finale of the Festival was a commissioned work, A Hope for The Future, with words and music composed by leading Australian choral composer Mr Dan Walker. The performance of this piece was spine-tingling as children’s voices, accompanied by an orchestra, echoed the sentiments of a changing world that is currently facing so many environmental issues and challenges, with the words succinctly speaking of our responsibility as citizens to ‘give our Earth a voice’. Conducted by Festival Director, Mr Owen Nelson, the massed choir and orchestra was accompanied by Redlands Music teacher, Mr Mathew Owen.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the following students who achieved musical excellence as Redlands representatives at this year’s Festival, with thanks extended to Mrs Hilary Luck and Mr Mathew Owen for supporting the students over these past few days.

The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present ONE work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece WILL NOT be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist.
