Gala Ball

More than 570 parents and friends of Redlands attended the Gala Ball at the Westin Hotel last Saturday evening. There has been much very positive feedback that a most enjoyable evening was had by all. I wish to thank Mrs Dana Casimaty, our Foundation Director, her team and the many other staff and volunteers, who put in such great efforts to make the event a memorable one. Thank you so much to those Redlands parents who donated prizes for the silent and live auctions and those who so competitively bidded for the auction items. Four young alumni, three of whom held Scholarships at Redlands, did an excellent job in entertaining the crowd. Abe Mitchell (2005) valiantly performed his role as MC, and three of our recent Performing Arts stars, who are continuing careers in this area – Embla Bishop (2013), Luke Haberecht (2014) and Greta Argyropoulos (2017) – entertained us all during the evening with some fine music.

Donations towards a third means-tested Scholarship are still welcome, especially from those who could not join us on the night. For more information and for photos, please visit the Foundation section in this week’s Note Day

Communications Audit

Thank you to the parents who contributed to our Communications Audit last term through the completion of our survey. We do welcome our community’s feedback, and major surveys like this are an important way of gathering parent input across the School. We will be receiving the full results of this audit in the coming week and once our team has had the opportunity to reflect upon the report, we will be providing you with an update about future improvements you can expect.

ISA Finals

Following many hard fought battles last Saturday, six Football, Hockey and Netball teams have progressed to the Finals this coming Saturday. I wish them all the very best and encourage Secondary School students to come along and support their friends and the teams. I remind all student supporters that they must come in correct School uniform.

I also wish to congratulate the four Tennis teams that were victorious in the ISA Finals last weekend – the 1sts, 3rds, 4ths and 6ths, with the 1sts winning the ISA Division 1 shield for the first time since 2012. More details about their wonderful success can be found in the Sports Section of this week’s Note Day.

Foundation

An Amazing Gold Night!

Thank you so much for joining us on Saturday at the Redlands Gala Ball. We hope you enjoyed the ambience, our talented Alumni entertainment and the opportunity to connect with fellow guests from the Redlands community.

We are very grateful to our past students who joined us on the night, Greta Argyropoulos (Class of 2017), Embla Bishop (Class of 2013), Luke Haberecht (Class of 2014) and MC, Abe Mitchell (Arts Captain, Class of 2005), and the talented live band, Squid Munchies, ensured the dance floor was pumping. The media wall and photo booth also proved very popular with plenty of selfies taken!

The Raffle winners were announced on the night: 1st Prize: Peter Ireland, 2nd Prize: Kate Moore, 3rd Prize: Anna Kettle, 4th Prize: Nick Larcos, 5th Prize: Anna Sherrington. Congratulations to all the winners.

A huge thank you to our Event Partners: Ski Japan, Jon Snead The Agency and Surreal Jewellery for their very generous support, as well as our Gold Sponsors and Prize Donors. A special thank you to the Gala Ball Committee, Alumni Event Volunteers, and the RPFA for all their efforts to make this event a such a huge success.

Due to the generosity of our community, we raised just over $133,000! This brings us one step closer to achieving our goal of raising enough funds for the endowment means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund to help a talented and deserving student who would otherwise not have the opportunity to receive a Redlands education.

If you wish to see the Peter Lennox Scholarship video shown on the night, please watch here.

Technology Addiction and Sleep Presentation

Last Wednesday 14 August, over 120 parents and staff attended a presentation from child psychiatrist Dr Philip Tam and sleep expert Lisa Maltman discussing how we can assist students to create good sleep habits and avoid the pitfalls of too much technology. They discussed how sleep is vital to mental and physical health; however, unfortunately, many adolescents and adults are still not getting enough sleep. (It was recommended that adolescents get between 8-10 hours of sleep each night.) With busy schedules and many different commitments and distractions, getting this amount of “good” sleep can be challenging for young people. Some of the “Smart Sleep” tips that Lisa Maltman shared were:

  • Ensure there is no “technology” (including phones) in the bedroom (most important)
  • Use an alarm clock instead of a phone if needed for waking up in the morning
  • Have a break between screen time and bedtime (ideally one hour)
  • Create a regular sleep/wake routine
  • Implement wind down and stress reduction strategies before going to sleep
  • Expose yourself to bright, natural light in the morning and dim light in the evening
  • Exercise daily (but not too close to bedtime)
  • Improve time management skills to ensure adequate sleep

We look forward to continuing to work with the Secondary School Parent Representatives in identifying other popular topics for future parent presentations.

Winter Sports Update

Last weekend many of our Winter Sports teams competed in the ISA Semi Finals or last regular season round of the NSNA Netball competition. There were many excellent results with the following teams winning and progressing to the ISA Grand Final: Girls’ Football 1sts, 2nds and Intermediate A teams; Girls’ 2nds and 3rds Hockey teams; the 4ths Netball team; and the 9A, 9C, 8B and 7D Netball teams making it to the NSNA Netball Semi Finals. We wish all of these teams good luck this weekend.

I would like to extend a special congratulations to our Tennis teams who were competing in the ISA Finals of their competition. This year we had all six of our Tennis teams playing in the Finals – a great achievement. It was wonderful to see the positive spirit and supportive atmosphere amongst our tennis players throughout the day. Boys and girls across Yrs 7-12 played in mixed teams and cheered on each other when they were not competing. It was an illustration of Redlands at its best! I would like to congratulate the 3rds, 4ths and 6ths Tennis teams for winning their Grand Finals, and the 1sts team for winning the ISA Tennis Premiership in a thrilling match against rival, Oakhill. The four 1sts players competing on the day, Philip Hilble, Sebastian Dobson, Aymon Holth and James Robinson, split their doubles and singles matches four sets all with Oakhill so they had to go to a count back of games and Redlands won by just two games. I would like to congratulate all players and coaches in the Tennis program and recognise our Captain of Tennis, Freddie McKewen, for the excellent leadership he displayed not just on Saturday, but throughout the season.

Greenlands Week: 2040 Screening

In Week 7, the Secondary School will be celebrating Greenlands Week, where we will be focusing on the many and varied issues facing our environment and some of the strategies we can enact to make a difference. There will be a number of activities here at school led by our Environment Captains, Alice MacDonald and Ben Piro, and their “Green Team” of students. This year, we are also hosting a special screening of the film, 2040. The film explores what the world could look like by the year 2040 if we embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet. Students and families across both campuses of the school are invited to this special community screening on Thursday 5 September at 6.00pm at the Orpheum Theatre. You can book your tickets here and all proceeds will go towards environmental initiatives at Redlands.

Gala Ball

It was great to see many of you at the Redlands Gala Ball on Saturday evening. I would like to thank Dana Casimaty and the Foundations team for all of their efforts in organising this event, as well as to the many of you have contributed to our Scholarship Fund – a worthy cause which will provide opportunities for students to attend Redlands in the future who otherwise might not be able to do so.

Campus Security

Please note that after school hours, we do not provide organised supervision for students on Campus outside the Library (unless there is an after school cocurricular or curricular activity taking place). Furthermore, the school gates are locked from 8.00pm (unless there is a function occurring) and students and parents are not permitted to enter the school grounds after this time for security reasons.

Chaplain

Redlands students are urged to “let their light shine” for the benefit of others. These words spoken by Jesus were to encourage the disciples to live out their faith in a way that brought honour to God. Our students are taking up this mantle and using their musical ability to serve the community in Chapel.

Chapels on Monday and Friday on the Senior Campus have enjoyed cello, trumpets, clarinets, drums and violins in producing great music to accompany the students singing. I have also appreciated the students who have bravely sung at the front, leading the less stronger singers among us. This has added a great  dimension to our singing and increased the community identity as we gather for Chapel.

Similarly, on the Junior Campus, students have been participating in Chapel in a variety of ways. Individual classes in Kindergarten to Yr 2 have begun to lead Chapel for their peers. The class teachers have done an amazing job supporting their students in this process. They take the allocated Bible story and plan how the story will be told. They might act out the story, make a movie, complete some art works or even host a quiz show as a means of helping students to gain an understanding of what the Bible teaches in a particular story and how it might relate to us today. The students lead prayers and choose which songs will be sung during the Service. A special feature of this process is that the students are able to invite their families to attend the Chapel Service which they lead.

It has been our pleasure each Monday to welcome, parents, grandparents, siblings and family friends to our Chapel Services.

Blessings

Debating

SDN Competition

Congratulations to the Senior, Yr 10, Junior and Primary A teams who all had wins against Riverview last Friday.

This week is a Home debate against Roseville College. Students are requested to set up rooms at 3.30pm as Roseville College will be here early.

Yr 7 Inter-House Debates

The inaugural Yr 7 Inter-House Debate competition kicked off with a bang on Wednesday with Roseby debating Dumolo “that teachers should wear a teachers’ uniform at school”. The students who debated in front of the entire Year Group were both eloquent and courageous. Both sides had very good arguments but at the end of the day Dumolo won the debate arguing for the negative.

In the second robust Yr 7 debate, Cowper debated McDouall on whether we should welcome aliens in the event of an invasion. The teams were passionate and entertaining, the very close decision boiled down to one single point. The debate was awarded to Cowper who will face Dumolo in tomorrow’s final.

The finals of the Year 7 Inter-House Debate competition will be on Tutor Time this Friday and we look forward to both teams providing us with a high calibre debate once again.

Winter School

It is Week 4 of Winter School and students are continuing to enjoy all the opportunities it brings. Students are enjoying living together in community and being able to make friends from other Year Groups:

“Step out of your comfort zone and don’t be scared to make new friends in all different age groups” Zara Clement.

Students have been taking on increased independence and responsibility for their academic learning with the introduction of optional Prep time on Friday and Sunday nights. There is also the opportunity to use some Prep time to practice guitar.

“The guitar lesson during Prep time is very fun” Daniel Phipps.

This week students continued to enjoy their skiing and snowboarding lessons, with some venturing into the park area for their first time. Students speak highly of their ski instructors.

“The instructors are the best I’ve ever had”  Oliver Stephens.
“The instructors are dope and always so much fun to snowboard with” Callie Forest.

On Saturday, students enjoyed their lessons with their instructors and their free ski time. In the evening students split into their duty groups and debated the hot topic of ‘skiing is better than snowboarding’. It was a very entertaining and a close debate where the affirmative team won.

On Sunday, students had the option to free ski all day or go to the Thredbo Leisure Centre. Those students at the Leisure Centre enjoyed the slide and inflatable obstacle course. All students enjoyed a Harry Potter marathon together on Sunday afternoon and evening.

When asked about their experiences of Winter School so far students have had nothing but positive reviews:

“Winter School so far has been quite the adventure. The skiing has been phenomenal, and not only fun but beautiful on the slopes. School has likewise been a unique experience with more independent classes and study time. If I were to sum up Winter School in one word, it would be Extraordinary.” Beau Davies.

“Winter School is a must do, coolest experience Redlands can offer.” Sienna Wessels.

With next week marking the halfway point of Winter School, students and staff alike cannot believe how fast the term is racing by. Looking forward to more fun, continued friendship building, continued growth and hopefully another good dump of snow!

Post Trial Examinations

Congratulations to all Yr 12 students on completing their Trial examinations. All the exam supervisors were very impressed with their punctuality, adherence to the rules and positive attitude. Mr Taylor also commended this exam period as one of the most smooth-running experiences during his time at Redlands so far. This week, our boys and girls were welcomed back to Campus and appeared to be more relaxed after many late nights and study sessions in the past few weeks. I hope they will continue to keep a good balance and look after both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Now that we are half way through this term, various events will take over their study at times. They are advised to stay organised and get prepared–noting down all important dates and allocating time for those important milestones. Maximise learning time where possible, analyse strengths and weaknesses reflected from the trial exams, consult with teachers for improvement strategies and outline an action plan.

In preparation for final examinations, a number of workshops have been organised for students, including The Year 12 Countdown with Dr Prue Salter, a stress management workshop with School Counsellors and an HSC English Trial Paper analysis workshop. We hope they will help students to move towards achieving their personal best in a stress-free way through their last few weeks of school.

Redlands Concussion Management Policy

Recently, more medical research has been made available in relation to concussion management. In order to align with best practice in this area, Redlands now has our own policy in relation to concussion management. Last Thursday, during our fortnightly Year Assembly, I discussed the Concussion Management Policy with our students and explained their responsibilities in relation to this new policy. The success of implementing the new concussion management guidelines rely upon the understanding that there has been a cultural shift around head injury. We now understand that a head knock can be very detrimental (particularly to adolescent brains) and if not properly managed could lead to brain injury. This approach is vastly different to the “pick yourself up and dust yourself off” philosophy that I recall when playing competitive sport as a teenager.

Should your child suffer a knock to the head, face or neck or an impact somewhere else on the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth, it is prudent to seek medical advice and request a concussion assessment. Symptoms may not be initially apparent and may evolve over the hours or days following the injury. It is important that correspondence with school occurs promptly, so that we can support your child and work with you through the stages in the concussion management flow chart. Please do email me directly.

The Redlands Concussion Management Policy is available on Redlands Pulse for parents and the Yr 10 Pastoral page on iLearn for students, if you would like to download it and familiarise yourself with it. Successful concussion management relies on good communication with school and home, and this includes the reporting of concussions that have occurred during formal School Sport, Snowsports and also within the family context (such as on holiday). Please be advised that the policy is not so much time based, but rather stage based, meaning that students can only progress from one stage to the next when they are symptom free. A reduced cognitive load is also necessary to ensure the brain heals and this is assisted by a partial return to school for the student so that they have a reduced cognitive load. Please do not hesitate to be in touch should you require further information.

Interesting Article of the Week

please read

This week I have been fortunate enough to visit Winter School in Jindabyne and spend time with the students both on the slopes and in the classroom. It has been great seeing so many of the Yr 9s who are at Winter School and to notice how much they seem to be enjoying the experience. As a result of my visit, I thought you may be interested in reading about the benefits of skiing, with both physical and mental health.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students have been considering how they can be safe at parties, in particular looking at realistic scenarios of situations they could find themselves in. They have been brainstorming as a Tutor Group as to the best actions to ensure safety of themselves and each other.

Social Awareness Program

Students have continued watching a documentary which follows the lives of families who have been impacted by the war in Syria.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

eSafety Parents and Carers

eSafety Parents and Carers provides tips and advice on helping your child have a safe and enjoyable experience online. Some key areas the website tackles:

  • The Big Issues: help your child deal with the big issues in online safety, such as cyberbillying, online pornography, sending nudes and sexting, time online, gaming and unwanted contact.
  • Skills & Advice: what parents and carers need to know, including online safety basics, good habits start young, the hard-to-have conversations and privacy and your child.

The website also provides a valuable downloadable guide which offers practical skills and advice about how to tackle the big issues.

Pastoral Care – Optimism and Positivity

This week in Pastoral Care, Tutor Groups are building on their emotional awareness and self-regulation by exploring optimism and positivity. Often, we are predisposed to see the worst in a given situation. Students might assume that they’ll fail the next assessment, embarrass themselves in the presentation, or come last in the race. While this can often come from a place of self-preservation and wanting to avoid disappointment, it can also result in missing out on great opportunities for challenge and growth, while impacting self esteem through negative self-talk. Reminding ourselves to monitor our thinking, assess each situation on its merits, rather than the emotions we are feeling, and being open to the power of ‘yes’, may just help us to find talents and strengths that we otherwise would never have known were there.

Other Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • We appreciate your support in reminding students to always lock their personal belongings in their locker with a working lock. Many students are leaving belongings in Liggins Quad and, inadvertently, items are being picked up by other students. It is important we manage and take responsibility for our own items. Thank you for your support.
  • Next Friday, Yr 7 begins their first week of organising Service committees.  Students have expressed interest in building awareness for several different organisations and will be fundraising for Toys for Tucker and Guide Dogs Australia over the next few months. We focus on our immediate community in Yr 7 and begin to develop an understanding of and appreciation for giving back and contributing to something bigger than ourselves. Thank you in advance for any additional discussions taking place at home to help support these initiatives.
  • This is a reminder that all Assessment notifications are released to parents and students at least two weeks prior to the due date. Students are alerted of these notifications through iLearn and parents are able to access them in the Student Details section of Redlands Pulse.

HICES Music Festival

Last night, along with Coordinator of Music, Mr Kuilenburg, I thoroughly enjoyed the culmination of the Head of Independent Coeducation Schools (HICES) Music Camp, the HICES Concert in the wonderfully fitting setting of Sydney Town Hall.

Over the past few days, 26 students from Yrs 5-8 represented Redlands at this year’s HICES Music Camp and Festival. After completing a thorough audition process last term, students were selected by an external panel of conductors to participate in this three day intensive Music Camp held at Stanwell Tops. Alongside with 330 musicians from similar schools from around NSW, 26 Redlands students prepared a wide range of repertoire which was joyously and expertly present at the Festival concert last night.

In concluding the concert, the massed finale of the Festival, accompanied by Redlands Music teacher, Mr Mathew Owen, was commissioned work, A Hope for The Future, with words and music composed by leading Australian choral composer, Mr Dan Walker.

Congratulations to our Junior School students involved: Finlay Meijer (Trumpet), John Natilli (Trumpet), Leonardo Vaccarezza (Male Vocal Ensemble), Joel Daily (Cello), Marlon Giacco (Cello), Lily Wainberg (Violin), Sophia Natilli (Trumpet), Aneke Golowenko (Vocal Ensemble) and Charlee Kwintner (Vocal Ensemble). I was exceptionally proud of their efforts and accomplishments amongst such a high calibre of student peformers.

I also extend my gratitude to Assistant Coordinator of Music, Mrs Luck and Music teacher, Mr Owen, for sharing their passion and expertise for Music with all 360 students involved from 34 different schools. Their care of our students whilst away for the last three days was also appreciated.

Gala Ball

Last Saturday’s biennial Redlands Gala Ball was a stunning success and It was a delight to join more than 600 Redlands community members in enjoying a splendid evening of entertainment and friendship. As well as being a wonderful community event, the proceeds of the evening will go towards the means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund and the evening raised a staggering $133,000 towards this goal. Photos of the wonderful evening can be found here and my thanks are extended to our wonderful Foundation team and Organising Committee and all who contributed in so many different ways.

Lower North Shore Science Competition

Once again, the Junior School will be hosting this year’s Lower North Shore Science Competition which takes place on Thursday 12 September.

Primary school aged students from schools in the area have been invited to enter and present a Science experiment they have completed (see Entry Guidelines for more details). At the event our young scientists will be provided with a small desk to present their entry and attendees will be able to engage with our entrants and view their submissions (Ideas and Examples). At the closure of the event, prizes will be awarded and all participants will be acknowledged for their submissions.

  • Who: entries are open to Primary School aged students
  • Cost: entry to attend and participation in the event is free.
  • Prizes: There will be a number of prizes up for grabs at the event – stay tuned for more information closer to the event!

Budding scientists who are keen to participate or attend and haven’t registered yet should do so here and we will be promoting this again amongst our students, many of whom thoroughly enjoyed being part of the event last year. Photos of last year’s events can also be seen on the Eye Heart Science website here.

Operation Christmas Child

In our assembly this week, Yr 4 student, Alexis Mar, spoke to the students about her hope in supporting Operation Christmas Child, a project run each year where gift-filled shoe boxes are sent to children in poverty around the world. Alexis has done this for a number of years and has asked other students to consider helping this year too. The shoe box the child receives is likely to be the only gift in their lifetime. Within each shoebox is:

  • Something to wear;
  • Something for school;
  • Something to play with;
  • Something for hygiene, and
  • Something to love.

Alexis will be holding a bake sale later this term to support this and additional information will be circulated to classes next week and Alexis has provided shoe boxes for students to fill.

Student Health Notice

Parents are reminded to keep children at home if they are unwell. There has been a spike in student sickness, particularly flu-like symptoms, and apart from the obvious spreading of germs when they are here, students are also not in a good state of mind conducive to learning. Thanks, in advance, for your support of this matter which NSW Public Health have also advised us to communicate.

Book Week

The Prep School made a special effort to promote the joy of books this week as they enjoyed activities related to Book Week. It was wonderful to see students and staff embracing this year’s theme of Reading is My Secret Power as they focused on the powerful ability books have to transport us to another place in the real and make-believe world. The delight on the children’s faces was palpable when the teachers paraded out in their coloured crayons from the book The Day the Crayons Quit. We are looking forward to author Frances Watts visiting the students on Monday 2 September who will share her stories. Thank you to Mrs Roberts who reminded everyone about the importance of sharing a book a day, modelling how to read and how to be an enthusiastic problem-solving, book-searching reader who is open to all the possibilities reading brings.

Gala Ball

Plenty of glamour, laughter and dancing was the order of the night last Saturday at the Redlands Gala Ball. The event was well represented by Preparatory and Redlands House families and I thank everyone most sincerely for their support of the School. Dana Casimaty and the Foundation team, the RPFA and parent volunteers gave so much of their time to make the evening so memorable. Redlands Alumni Greta Argyropoulos (Class of 2017), Embla Bishop (Class of 2013) and Luke Haberecht (Class of 2014) entertained the crowd and Abe Mitchell (Arts Captain, Class of 2005) was an outstanding Master of Ceremonies. Greta Argyropoulos shared her journey of being a scholarship recipient and how this enabled her to complete Yr 12 and pursue a career in Music. The enormous generosity of the Redlands community helped raise a substantial amount for the endowment means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund to help a talented and deserving student who would otherwise not have the opportunity to receive a Redlands education.

Junior Campus Open Morning

On Tuesday Redlands hosted an Open Day for prospective families. Yr 2 students Emma Shoosmith and Arlo Wainberg, together with Yr 6 students Betti Butcher and Angus McInnes, ably assisted families with their questions. A challenge for anyone to answer impromptu questions, Emma and Arlo confidently and enthusiastically addressed the large audience on a number of different topics, including their experiences with our Positive Behaviour for Learning framework and the extra curricular activities they enjoy the most. Yr 11 students, Armen Shiraz-Dilanchian and Anna Saunders, spoke fondly of their time on the Junior Campus and particularly made mention of the teachers who inspired them and the friendships they made. Thank you to the following Yr 2 students who were wonderful ambassadors for their School, leading tours for families through the Prep and Junior Schools.

2A – William Whitelaw, Luca Cowlishaw, Eliza Withana, Tara Clark
2C – Isabelle Garde, Emma Shoosmith, Charlie Hutchings, Aidan Schlederer
2E – Zara Lo, Arlo Wainberg, Cara Sheeran, Kyler Simpson
2P – Molly Crompton, Enrico Viese Vivaldi, Austin Robinson, Sophie Coolen

Yr 1 Vaucluse House

Yr 1 students attended Vaucluse House as part of their Inquiry Unit on The History of Toys. The children learnt about the Wentworth family which included Mr and Mrs Wentworth, their 10 children and 40 servants. They had fun pretending to be servants in the kitchen polishing silverware, sweeping the floor, folding tea towels, churning butter and grinding the spices. The students also participated in outdoor games enjoying learning about croquet, bowling, tug-of-war, hoops and cup and ball. They then had to wander through the garden trying to identify some fruits and vegetables that they knew. The comparison between the life of the Wentworth family and the life of a Redlands students drew many interesting comments such as “I’m glad my mum doesn’t make me share a room with my all of my brothers and sisters” (Charlie Halliday) and “the toys the Wentworth children play with are like some of the ones I have at home” (Leo Popovic).

Sustainability

Linked to the School’s Strategic action of Sustainability, the Preparatory School will be collecting bottle tops for Envision. Bottle tops are one of the top polluters found in our oceans our environment. Bottle tops are recyclable but are sadly often not recycled or fall through machinery, ending up in landfill or our oceans, turning into microplastic that is then introduced to our food chain. Envision are working towards creating a better future by collecting bottle tops to help children in need. Once collected, these bottle tops will be transformed into 3D filament, where they will be turned into prosthetic hands or bespoke items, such as ramps. The Prep School are supporting this endeavour and will be collecting bottle tops to create a brighter future for children in need. Please drop off your cleaned bottle tops at either Prep Reception or Redlands House. Thank you to Kimberlee Chipper, Yr 1 teacher, who brought this wonderful initiative to our attention.

Kindergarten Woodwork

Kindergarten are undertaking woodwork this term as part of the Kindergarten Science Unit Let’s Build, derived from the Australian Curriculum Early Stage One section, What’s it Made of?. Woodwork provides the students with a hands-on, shared experience discovering the properties of materials. The woodwork unit also builds all important learning dispositions, Responsible Risk Taking, Persistence and Creating, Imagining and Innovating. Thank you to the parents who are volunteering with this experience and donating materials, without whom valuable activities such as these wouldn’t be possible.

Transition to School

For children and their families, the transition to school is a significant milestone in a child’s education. When students have a positive experience with starting school, they can meet future changes throughout their education with trust and confidence. To assist in this transition, the Senior classes visited the Prep School on Wednesday to familiarise themselves with the playground, classrooms, bathrooms and Prep Reception area. Students were invited into classrooms to sit with Kindergarten classes. Next term, the children will have the opportunity to spend a day in Kindergarten and information pertaining to this will be sent to you in due course.

Sacrifice and Humility – The Key to Finals Success

Its Finals season, not just at Redlands but in many professional sporting codes as well. Playing in a final for a sport is a fantastic opportunity and a rewarding experience, one in which people who have played sport for many years may never get the opportunity to experience. The intensity of games is higher, the noise from the crowd is louder, the pressure is more powerful, the gratification is more fulfilling and the risk and reward has more burden. They are unique experiences which provide the deepest learning opportunities for our students. Sacrifice and humility are two learning outcomes that come to mind.

In order to be successful in a sports final you need to sacrifice your individual ambitions for the greater good. Your team and your team mates need to come first in order to achieve the goal. Your personal statistics, skills and often your physical boundaries all need to give way to the agreed measure of success by the team. This in essence is one of the most powerful lessons in teamwork. The ability for our students to learn self-sacrifice and benevolence will hold them in good stead as valued citizens in society later in life.

Humility is also critical to success. We often speak of the need for resilience as a skill for life, however, I would argue that a precursor to resilience is humility. Our students must first accept a failure or a mistake is part of learning. Students must be self-aware, shed of any self-doubt or sense of vanity and appreciate that there can be better ways of approaching a task, goal, skill or game. Learning to do this so that it becomes intuitive as an individual and as team throughout the length of a game and a season will ultimately deliver success.

I wish all our teams competing in a Final this weekend the best of luck. Play with heart, compete with passion and most of all demonstrate sacrifice and humility in its highest forms.

Exams and Sport attendance

All Sport trainings for all teams in the Secondary School continue as scheduled during exam periods. Yrs 11 and 12 students are encouraged but NOT required to attend their sport trainings during their respective HSC or IB exam periods.

Athletics

Athletics training will continue this Friday afternoon at Balmoral Oval. Students are reminded to be at the bus (departing from the Adams Centre) promptly for a 3.30pm departure. There are changeroom facilities at Balmoral Oval. The bus will return to Redlands at the completion of training (usually around 5.30pm).

There are a number of Invitational Athletics Carnivals that Redlands has entered, with details below (it is strongly encouraged that all members of the Athletics squad attend):

  • Saturday 24 August (Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre) – ISA Grand Finals take priority on this day
  • Saturday 31 August (ES Marks, Kensington) – we are on High Jump and Long Jump duty and looking for volunteers to assist
  • Saturday 7 September (Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre).
Basketball

Basketball will commence in Week 6. Please refer to Redlands Pulse for all of the latest basketball information for the upcoming season. If you wish to trial for the 1sts Basketball team (the top team in the school, not the top team for each age group) please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au to register for trials.

Cross Country

Best of luck to Emma Mahon (Yr 10) who will be competing at the Australian Schools Cross Country Championships this weekend.

Football

We had six Football teams feature in Semi Finals on Saturday. There were two boys teams competing, the 1st Boys and the 14A Boys. The 1st Boys knew they would have a tough game against top of the table St Pius. Unfortunately, St Pius were just too strong on the day, saving their best Football for the finals. Our 14A Boys played against the 2nd seed, Oakhill. Our boys were playing some great football and the score was 2-2 as the end of the game approached. An Oakhill penalty kick late in the game saw the final score as a 3-2 win to Oakhill. A great effort and competitive spirit was displayed by both boys teams in a very tough Division 1 Boys Football competition.

With all four of our girls teams in the Semi Finals, it was a very exciting day. Both the Junior A and 2nd Girls travelled to play St Spyridon. Being the lower seeded team in both of these games, the games would prove to be very tough. The Junior A Girls were up first and got off to a strong start but couldn’t hold off a well drilled St Spyridon side, losing the game 2-1.

Having lost to St Spyridon in the last contest, the 2nd Girls knew they would need to be ready from the kick-off. With St Spyridon scoring the first goal it was going to be tough to get in front. A goal made the score 1-1, before another Redlands goal ended the game a 2-1 win to the Redlands 2nds.

The 1st Girls were up against Central Coast and despite beating CCGS twice during the regular season, in finals Football anything can happen. A great cross was sent into the back of the net by a fantastic header. Some great team football from then onwards saw two more goals by Kate Stanbridge to end the game with a 3-0 win to Redlands.

The Inter A Girls played Chevalier and with an early own goal from Chevalier, our girls gained a lot of momentum. Showing great control throughout the game, the Inter A Girls finished with a very convincing 4-0 win.

Best of luck to the three teams that have progressed through to the Grand Final this Saturday 24 August. We encourage the Football community to come along to Blacktown Sportspark and support these teams in what should be an exciting day for Redlands.

Please book your tickets to the End of Season Football Presentation. The presentation evening will be held at Dee Why RSL on Friday 6 September.

Hockey

Last weekend saw both of our Girls 2nds and 3rds progressed through to this weekend’s ISA Grand Finals.

After a mad scramble to the start of their game through no fault of their own, the Girls 3rds settled into the game against Oxley. Wrestling with the opposition throughout the first half, our girls scored right on the half time break. With another two goals in the second half, our girls won with a strong 3-0 score line.

The Girls 2nds were well settled with their game, showing some strong teamwork and organisation, sharing the play and the attack on the ball. BMGS put up some solid defence however were not able to withstand the pressure with our girls winning 4-0.

Both teams have a great opportunity for this weekend’s Grand Finals and we wish them the best of luck. Straight after the games will be the Hockey Presentation BBQ lunch to be held in Liggins Quad from 12.30pm.

Netball

Last weekend saw the ISA Semi Finals take place with four Redlands teams being represented. Our 1st VII took on Oakhill 1 and were looking to score an upset early. It was an extremely close game throughout the first quarter with both teams trading goal for goal. Oakhill were able to capitalise on some opportunities throughout the 2nd quarter and Redlands worked hard to claw back. In the end Oakhill were just too strong taking the match to keep their four year unbeaten streak in tack.

Our 3rds battled hard against St Andrew’s with the game evenly poised throughout the first three quarters. Redlands came out firing in the final quarter looking to get a few goals back but SACS proved to be too strong taking the match 27 – 35.

Our 4ths played Central Coast Grammar School, jumping out to a strong six goal lead early in the first quarter. The final quarter was a back-and-forth match with CCGS turning the ball over a few times, however the Redlands girls held strongly and took the game 31 – 25.

Our Inter A team took on the top placed Barker 11 team. Their fast start put Barker on the back foot early in the match with the lead swinging between each team throughout the first two quarters. Barker were too strong taking the game 34 – 43.

Our NSNA teams played their final rounds on Saturday with some teams needing wins to progress to the finals. Our 9A team were taking on Loreto who were sitting one point behind them, with the team that won this match taking the 4th spot in the finals. Loreto opened up a nine goal lead at half time. Redlands slowly chipped away at the deficit taking the lead with less than two minutes to play and never looked back, controlling possession and taking the match 38 – 37.

The Redland Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 12 September at Norths Leagues Club.

Rowing

A reminder that tonight is the Rowing Information Session to be held in Redlands Hall from 6.00-7.00pm. All families and students are welcome, especially families and students who are new to the Rowing program.

Rugby

The 2019 Redlands Rugby season came to a dramatic close over the weekend.

The day started out with a blockbuster rematch between the Redlands Under 13s and a dominant Chevalier side. Our boys threw themselves into the contacts and driving the much larger opposition back. Ultimately the game ended in a Chevalier win but it was the attitude and determination from the Redlands boys that was the greatest reward from the match.

Our 14s played Oakhill College who had only allowed seven points against them for the entire season. The team played inspiring defence with many try saving tackles and multiple phases of defending their line against the much larger CCGS forwards. Many of these players have continued to grow and develop this year and we look forward to their presence in next year’s program.

To finish the day off our 1st XV came up against Redfield College. Having already played them twice through the season, the Semi Final clash looked to end all bragging rights and establish the top team. The 1st XV started the game with an explosion of attack, scoring the opening try of the match. Redfield immediately fired back with two tries coming off the back of so much possession. In the second half Redfield used consecutive penalties to march up the field, rewarded by an early try to further push away. Redlands answered back drawing the score closer, the nail-biting finish was set up. The last ten minutes were brutal with the two teams taking turns to drive each other back in bitter contacts. The balance was tilted, Redfield had so much possession and with a few minutes to go, with a Redlands drive coming so close to a try, the oppositions closed out the match. The total exhaustion from the players was there to see.

The 2019 Rugby season ended one week shy of a Grand Final but the best reward from this season will be the way in which all of our teams developed and how much stronger our program has become.

On 14 September we will celebrate the season with our annual Rugby Presentation to be held at Cammeray Golf Club. This is always a highlight of the season and to see so many new faces to the program this year will make our 2019 Presentation even more special.

Tennis

With all six ISA teams making the final, it was set to be a big day. The Redlands 6 team (Kabir, Isaac S, Jack, Mischa, Charlotte, Isaac B) played St Pius. Having finished the competition as minor premiers they were confident going into the final. Their enthusiasm and skill on the day outclassed St Pius and they took the win 8-0.

Redlands teams 1-5 fought for the right to be crowned champions of their division. Redlands 5 had a slow start but found some form when playing their singles, narrowly going down to a skilful St Patrick’s College team. Redlands 4 started strongly winning the opening doubles match. They were also playing St Patrick’s College and in the end clinched victory. Redlands 3 took charge of the match from the start demonstrating why they too finished as minor premiers in their division. A big win for Redlands 3, 8-0. Redlands 2 played the consistently strong St Patrick’s College. They were a little slow to get going but started to gain some momentum. St Patrick’s fought hard to hold on to just enough sets to walk away with the win.

The Firsts played Oakhill, their Achilles heel of tennis teams. Redlands have not won the ISA Division 1 shield since 2012 so it was a big day for the team. Phil and Seb hit the ground running working confidently together to outclass the opposition to win the first set. Aymon and James played a fantastic doubles match going down in a nail biter of a tie-breaker. Phil and James held their nerve playing confident shots to win their singles. With Redlands up four sets to three and six games going in to the final set, we only needed one game to win. Three games into the set, Redlands Firsts won.

Congratulations to all Redlands ISA Tennis students for their commitment, attitude at training, perseverance in matches and respect for coaches and each other, you are what make the Redlands Tennis community the amazing group of people it is. Thank you to parents for your continual support of the program and presence at matches throughout the season.

Term 4 Summer Sport Choices

Term 4  Summer Sport choices have now closed and anyone who hasn’t made a selection should email juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au to select their sport as soon as possible.

Athletics

The Redlands Athletics team will take on the best athletes in HICES next Wednesday in an effort to regain the HICES Championship title. After the past two years as runner up, our athletes are raring to go. I look forward to bringing good news of some tremendous performances next week.

AFL

The Girls AFL teams faced a sterner test last week with a number of girls schools having entered the competition. The skills of our girls and the opposition are improving rapidly and the quality of football has really lifted in such a short space of time. Most importantly, the girls are loving playing and the opportunity to try something new.

The Yr 3/4 team will be involved in the AFL Spring Challenge, a series of Friday night matches with eight games over four weeks starting on 6 September. Yrs 3 and 4 boys interested in playing in Friday games should come and let Mr Carter in the Sports Office know.

Football

Yr 6 footballers will have an opportunity to represent Redlands Junior School one last time, with a boys and girls team entered into the St Spyridon Invitational Cup in the last week of term. Students who wish to be considered for selection for this one-off tournament should let Head Coach Gerry and his band of coaches know at Wednesday afternoon training.

Netball

Redlands 13 and 18 have both qualified to contest Semi Finals. Best of luck to the girls and congratulations on a great season thus far. Here’s hoping we have some more Netball to report on in weeks to come.

Snowsports

The winter continues this week for a band of dedicated alpine athletes from Junior and Prep School, who are this week contesting the NSW Interschools Championships in Perisher. Rain and poor visibility have made fast times difficult across most disciplines through the early part of the week.

Winter Before School Training

The Term 3 sporting calendar, showing all training, matches and events is available on Redlands Pulse.

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.

HICES Music Festival

Over the past few days, students from Yrs 5-8 represented Redlands at the 2019 HICES Music Festival. After completing a thorough audition process last term, these students were selected by an external panel of conductors, to participate in this three day intensive Music Camp held at Stanwell Tops. Alongside other musicians from Independent Coeducational Schools from around NSW, they prepared a wide range of repertoire to present at the Festival Concert held at the Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday evening.

In concluding the concert, the massed finale of the Festival was a commissioned work, A Hope for The Future, with words and music composed by leading Australian choral composer Mr Dan Walker. The performance of this piece was spine-tingling as children’s voices, accompanied by an orchestra, echoed the sentiments of a changing world that is currently facing so many environmental issues and challenges, with the words succinctly speaking of our responsibility as citizens to ‘give our Earth a voice’. Conducted by Festival Director, Mr Owen Nelson, the massed choir and orchestra was accompanied by Redlands Music teacher, Mr Mathew Owen.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the following students who achieved musical excellence as Redlands representatives at this year’s Festival, with thanks extended to Mrs Hilary Luck and Mr Mathew Owen for supporting the students over these past few days.
