Meet the Music Series 2
The Bernstein Songbook
Last Thursday, Yr 11 and 12 classes attended a performance at the Sydney Opera House to listen to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Choirs present a concert titled The Bernstein Songbook. Leonard Bernstein was one of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century: conductor, pianist, inspiring TV presenter and a composer whose creations ranged from symphonies for the concert hall to one of the greatest musicals of all time, West Side Story. In celebrating the centenary of his birth, this concert represented an inspiring account of his music for stage and screen. New York, New York from On the Town set the scene and then followed on exhilarating program with guest soloist Australian soprano Lorina Gore and two stars of Broadway, Kim Criswell and Julian Ovenden. All the favourites, including Glitter and be Gay (Candide), Maria (West Side Story), as well as some beautiful and surprising rarities were experienced as part of this concert.
