Redlands Art Prize and Cocktails – Thank You

To conclude the successful year of the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize, a private viewing for Redlands parents was held last week at NAS. We welcomed guest speakers Justin Callanan, Director of Piermarq Art Advisory, Judith Blackall, Curator of the NAS Gallery, and Mark Harpley, Head of Visual Arts at Redlands, who delivered great insights into the collection. For the photo gallery please visit here.

Annual Giving to Redlands School

Donations of any size, small or large, are highly appreciated as tuition fees cover the running costs of the School only and capital works are financed by bank loans, reserves and donations.

We are seeking support for the final stage of the development of New Learning Hub, which is due to open mid-2019. In particular, your support towards the final fit outs and equipment for Design & Technology and Visual Arts, including 3D printers and laser cutters which will be located at the ground level of the New Learning Hub are greatly appreciated. Donations are tax deductible.

To make a donation or secure or upgrade your family plaque, please visit here.

Family Plaques at the Entrance to the New Learning Hub

The Legacy Board with $10,000, $5,000 and $1,000 Family Plaques will be placed in the foyer to the New Learning Hub. This is a unique opportunity to reserve one for your child and join the 264 Redlands families who have already made this investment.

From the Principal

I write to let all parents know of the very sad news that one of our Year 12 students died suddenly on Wednesday morning and was found deceased at her home. Jodie Ah Chong and her family have been members of the Redlands community since she commenced in our Junior School in Year 5, in 2011.  Since that time she developed into an engaged and much loved member of the student body. Jodie represented Australia in synchronized swimming and also the School in swimming carnivals. Her other great cocurricular interest has been music.

We will do everything we can to support the Ah Chong family in their time of intense grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with their immediate and extended family, friends of Jodie and the family and the entire Redlands Community, particularly our Year 12 students. Naturally it is too early to be able to provide more information at this early stage and we must respect the wishes of Jodie’s family. We shall provide more information as appropriate to students and parents when that is available.

Pastoral support is being provided to students who are particularly affected by this news. Redlands Hall is being used as a base for Year 12 and other students, supported by our School Counsellors and Chaplains.

We are also focused on helping to mitigate grief and resume normal routines, which are themselves an important part of the process when a tragic event occurs.

Grief is a perfectly natural response to the loss of a life when it is someone well-known within a family or community. The way in which individuals will show grief, the length for which it endures, and how others will offer support to those who grieve is also very varied. Please click here for more information.

Our broader goal is to keep things as settled as possible for our School community during this terribly sad time. The warmth, compassion, strength and support already evident in the Redlands community will go a long way to helping this.

Head of Secondary School

Secondary School Update

As you would have been made aware today through previous communications, yesterday we received the very sad news about the sudden death of our Year 12 student, Jodie Ah Chong.

As Dr Lennox says in his article this week, this tragedy has had a profound impact upon our School community – but even more profoundly on those who were close to her, or who are themselves experiencing mental health struggles. We have provided pastoral support throughout the day today from our Redlands pastoral support team, and also from additional outside counsellors, for those students who have been distressed or greatly affected by this news.

Tomorrow we will continue to provide this support for our students and they have been informed in Year Group meetings earlier today that they can speak to various members of our pastoral support team if they wish to in Redlands Hall throughout the day. We are also appreciative of the external support and guidance we have received from Headspace today and over the coming days.

Today and over the coming weeks, if you are concerned about your son’s or daughter’s reaction or expression of feelings about this news, we encourage you to speak to them and to listen to their concerns at any time they wish to share them. Advice and tips for parents when speaking to children about a death such as this can be found here. If you have any other concerns about your child’s mental health or well-being, we encourage you to speak to members of our pastoral support team at school. If at home this evening or over the weekend, this news is distressing for yourself or your children, please call kidshelpline on 1800 55 1800 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

We are also aware that this weekend the second season of 13 Reasons Why will be commencing on Netflix. This show deals with the aftermath of a suicide and we realise that this content might be distressing for some of our students. Headspace have developed resources for students and parents who view the show which can be found here.

While we know this news will impact many members of our school community, we are returning the School to usual routines as soon as possible, recognising that students can be affected by such an event for weeks and months to come.

I have said repeatedly over my time at Redlands that I have been struck by the strength of the Redlands community. We are so fortunate to have such a strong community in a time of need such as this and I know we will all pull together through this difficult time.

Breakfast with a Scientist

Last year was the inaugural year for Breakfast with a Scientist and was a great success:

The variety of the scientists who came was amazing. The idea of having breakfast with the people who have excelled in their respective careers is fantastic.” Year 10 student.

I enjoyed that we got to learn about science, architecture, cells and cardiology.  And we got to have time at the end to ask the scientists questions.” Year 7 student

As a part of Science Week 2018, we are looking to invite parents who work in science related fields to speak to our budding scientists at Redlands. Our aim is to demonstrate the importance of Science and Engineering in the wider community and to inspire the next generation of scientists.

Breakfast with a Scientist will take place on the morning of Thursday 16 August. The event will commence at 7.45 am and finish at 10.10 am. A light breakfast will be provided.

The session will involve:

  • A short presentation about your work (5 minutes per speaker): What is your current role? What are the most exciting aspects of your role? What you like best about your job? What you find most challenging?
  • Question and answer session with students (30 minutes)

If you are interested in being involved please email Sarah Harrisson. Please also provide details of your field of study.

Mother’s Day Classic

Last Sunday Redlands was represented by over 80 runners and walkers at the Mother’s Day Classic. Despite the showers there was a great Pink spirit in all of the events and our Pink Redlands Community Support tshirts looked great. We came 3rd in the Schools category for registrations.

Redlands Pink Sports Round – Saturday, 23 June

This year we will again be hosting a Redlands Home round of Sports at Macquarie. Most teams will be having home games and most sports are at Macquarie on this date. This is a wonderful day of school spirit and we encourage all students to come and cheer on their friends even if not competing on the day. This is also a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Network Australia. Students will be able to buy pink socks ($15) for their games and it would be great if all teams were on the field sporting the pink legs. It is also another opportunity to bring out your Redlands Community Support Tshirts ($20) and the Redlands Pink Caps ($15), available from the Uniform Shop. Proceeds from the sale of these will go to the Breast Cancer Network.

On the day there will be a huge bake sale and sausage sizzle. We are also looking for students and parents with musical talent to sign up to participate in Busking for Breast Cancer on the day.

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal

The Red Shield Appeal happens across the weekend of 26 – 27 May. Redlands students in Yr 11 will again be helping the Salvation Army with their annual door knock in our local community on Sunday 27 May. If you live near school, look out for our student on Sunday 27 and give generously. We need approximately 100 Yr 11 students to sign up for this activity. Students will gather at school at 8am on the morning of the door knock and then after knocking all of the residences in their allocated area, they will return to school by 11am to lodge the donations and have a well earned BBQ sausage sizzle.

Spring Fair

Planning for Spring Fair is underway. There are opportunities for students to assist the Redlands Parents and Friends (RPFA) team. Students are encouraged to sign up to either work as a team to run a stall or be an ambassador on the day and help out where needed. You will need to bring your planning skills and willingness to collaborate. Students can sign up here. It’s a great opportunity for meaningful Duke of Edinburgh and Yr 11 Service Learning and IB CAS reflections while supporting and strengthening your school community.

Yrs 11 and 12 Performance Night

Friday 25 May 6.00-7.30pm, Redlands Hall

Yr 12 student Erin Pacholke has organised a performance night for students in Yrs 11 and 12 to have stage and audience practice of their major theatre and music pieces. She has dedicated all funds raised on the night to Taldumande Youth Services. This is a wonderful opportunity to see some of our talented students at their best.

Careers and Universities

Thank you to Ms Salier for arranging so many opportunities for Yr 12 students to meet and discuss a variety of tertiary options. On Monday we had Macquarie University visit followed by the UTS Co-op Scholarship talk delivered by Oscar Wilson, Class of 2017, on Tuesday.  On Wednesday we greeted the Claremont McKenna, Pomona & Swarthmore Colleges USA. This was their first visit to Sydney which was exciting given they are ranked highly in the USA. On Thursday we had a workshop on how to write the best UK personal statement/US essay. These experiences assist students to view school as a stepping stone and shift their focus towards their future direction.

Approach to Feedback

Students and parents are reminded to approach the next few weeks as pragmatically as possible. At this stage it’s in everyone’s best interest to receive full and frank feedback that outlines areas of strength and areas for further development. Listing these focus areas will help keep Term 2 in perspective and adopt a growth mindset. Focussing on marks and attempting to calculate an estimated ATAR is neither helpful nor possible. Meeting with Ms Salier is a positive course of action to discuss future options in light of recent feedback.

Community

Thank you to Anna Jackson, Julia Newman, Cara Skirrow and Thea Sullivan who gave up their personal time to assist some younger students with their Language assessments. Their help was very much appreciated and was during their own two week examination period. Thank you also to Kat Stuart and Marcos Brisson for successfully initiating and managing the introduction of paper recycling bins on the entire Senior Campus. This was a mammoth task that displayed their exceptional teamwork and leadership.

Meningococcal ACWY Vaccinations for Yr 11s

On the 19 June we will be visited by the Northern Sydney Public Health Unit to administer vaccinations for Meningococcal ACWY to all Yr 11 students. The vaccines are offered free of charge and will be given by specialist nurses. Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program. A parent information kit will be distributed to students in the coming weeks. Students are encouraged to have this vaccination as it prevents a debilitating disease.

Paul Dillon Visit

On Tuesday 29 May Redlands is pleased to welcome back Mr Paul Dillon to present to Yrs 10, 11 and 12. Paul has been working in the area of drug and alcohol education for the past 25 years and has great research and evidence to share.

He will also be presenting to parents on the evening of Thursday 14 June on Adolescents and ‘Risk Taking’: Why do teens do the things they do and what can you do about it?’ Please note this is a different presentation to the one that he will give to students. We strongly recommend that you attend this event.

Maya Auld also received the Harry Taubman Memorial Shield.

Yr 10 Industry Day

On Friday 25 May, Yr 10 will have a unique opportunity to visit corporate workplaces as part of our Industry Day. Students have been allocated a workplace and will receive an individualised letter from Ms Salier outlining the specific requirements for the day such as venue and times, etc. While we have endeavoured to give students their first preference, this is not feasible in all cases. All workplaces will offer a worthwhile experience and an informative day learning about contemporary work cultures.

Yr 9 Curriculum Camp

Last week saw our Yr 9 students travel to Wee Jasper (60km from Yass) in rural NSW, for our annual Curriculum Camp. We were blessed with beautiful weather for the majority of the week and students were able to experience the rugged beauty of the Wee Jasper area at its best. We were ably supported during the camp by staff from OEG (Outdoor Education Group) as well as a fabulous group of Redlands teachers. Students hiked, canoed, caved and camped under canvas for the duration. OEG group leaders commented upon the strength of character of our Yr 9 students,  and were thoroughly impressed with their manners, demeanour, and the positive attitude displayed by our students. I would like to thank parents for assisting and preparing the students with the appropriate gear as this was essential in ensuring all students had a positive experience.

Arnhem Land Immersion Opportunity

In the April School Holidays next year, students from our Year Group have the opportunity to live with and learn from the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. This is an incredible experience that allows students to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of our land, Aboriginal culture and self.  All parents and students are invited to find out more at the Information Evening on Thursday 24 May at 6pm in Redlands Hall. Any questions should be directed to Simon Colyer.

Yr 9 Commerce Market Day

The Yr 9 Commerce Market Day will be held next week (Week 4) Thursday 24 May. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills from their current Commerce topic, Running a Business. Students will each make an equity investment in their business and will charge some nominal operating costs (these are donated to the Redlands Scholarship Fund). With good planning, they will ultimately regain their initial investments and then all profits will be distributed to a charity chosen by students.

Cross Country – Knox Invitational Carnival

On Saturday 12 May, Redlands competed at the CAS/GPS XC Carnival for the first time. The Carnival was hosted by Knox Grammar School at St Ives Showground and attracted many independent schools from across NSW. The meet was great preparation towards the ISA Cross Country Carnival which is coming up on 30 May. James Barrelle competed in the Junior 4k and was the first ISA runner across the line. We warmly congratulate James on this great achievement especially as the Carnival was on the Saturday morning after Yr 9 Camp.

ISA Netball

Olivia Donoghue competed in the ISA Netball trials on Friday 11 May and was selected for the Under 15s ISA team. This is a wonderful achievement and we look forward to hearing of Olivia’s progress as the season begins.

Manly Daily Junior Sports Star Award

George Murphy was nominated for the Manly Daily Junior Sports Star, Individual Award for 2018. The article appeared in the Manly Daily on Saturday 12 May. We congratulate George for his nomination and are proud of his continued commitment to Snowsports. George has demonstrated his ability to balance both his sporting and academic commitments and this is testament to his discipline and approach in both areas. Well done George.

Year 8

General

I congratulate the Yr 8 cohort on starting the term well, and also welcoming our new students warmly.

In Tutor Time, Tutors have been following up with uniform infringements and Approach To Learning conversations with students. Tutor Groups have also been spending time on academic care, with assessments in the following subjects falling this term: Languages, Dance, Drama, English, Mathematics, Music, Science and Visual Arts. If any students are feeling overwhelmed with their academic load, please encourage them to speak with their Tutor, who can begin to organise assistance.

Science/Service Excursion

On Monday 28 May (Week 5) Yr 8 students will be going on a Science/Service excursion to the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. Students are asked to bring lunch, water and snacks as there are no shops nearby. Students should wear PE uniform, and are encouraged to wear tracksuit pants and bring a raincoat, as the excursion is mostly outdoors.

NAPLAN

Students in Yrs 7 have been busy doing their NAPLAN tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. I would like to commend the students for the seriousness with which they have taken these tests and their conduct during them. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. It is important that students approach these tests seriously and apply themselves to the various tasks to the very best of their ability and I am pleased to say that they seem to have done this from my observations. Students who have missed an examination due to illness will catch-up on their examination/s on Friday.

Achievements

Congratulations to Fraya Gait who, after two days of trials, was selected as a team member of the North Sydney and Beaches representative U13 Hockey team.

Lost Property

There is a substantial amount of items in lost property presently including text books, drink bottles, bags, shoes and many items of uniform including blazers and sports gear. If your child is missing any item, please encourage them to visit Lost Property on the verandah outside of the Health Centre.

Thursday Sport

Just a reminder of Thursday afternoon Sport arrangements. If students have attended school but are recovering from illness or injury, they are required to travel on the bus and attend Sports training with their team. They will be exempt from participation, yet will still be able to learn game plans and support their team with planning for weekend competition. Parents should send an email to the Sports Department to confirm these circumstances.

Guidelines for Goal Setting

As you are aware students have been meeting with Tutors and setting goals. It’s important that student goals are SMART goals, or SMARTIES:

  • SPECIFIC: Goals should be detailed and specific as possible. Students should avoid broad wishy-washy goals like ‘I want to do better in Maths’ and make them very detailed and specific. Exactly what do they want to achieve?
  • MEASUREABLE: Students want to be able to know when they have achieved their goal so they should make sure there is some way to measure success.
  • ACTION-ORIENTED:Short-term goals should really be the action steps students need to take to achieve the medium and longer-term goals.
  • RELEVANT & REALISTIC: Goals change, so if a goal is no longer relevant, students need to change it too. Although goals should stretch them beyond their comfort zone, they need to be in some sense realistic. Students should create challenging goals by all means, but not totally unrealistic ones.
  • TIME-BASED: Goals need to have a ‘to complete by’ date to give students something to aim for.
  • INTERESTING: Goals should about things that students find interesting and worthwhile.
  • EMOTIONAL: Powerful language should be used to express the emotion behind the goals.
  • SUCCESS ORIENTED: Goals should be expressed in a positive and success focused way.

You can learn more about how to achieve your academic goals at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au by logging in with the details below and working through some of the units. (Username: Redlands | Password: 68results).

Mother’s Day Breakfast

On Monday morning, we were thrilled to host our Junior Campus mums for a special Mother’s Day celebration and I hope that those present enjoyed this wonderful start to their week. In particular, I must thank our Catering team who started at 6am to prepare and set up for this important event in our calendar, the genuine warmth of which could be felt above Monday’s cooler weather.

Yr 4 Camp Visit

Yesterday, I enjoyed a wonderful day with Yr 4 who are currently enjoying the stunning weather and scenery in the Shoalhaven region whilst on Curriculum Camp. For new families, as part of my role, I have the privilege of enjoying time at every Junior School Camp, where I get to spend time with the students in an environment outside of our School grounds. These purposeful visits are always amongst the highlights of my year, and it was wonderful to observe the way in which the students were making new friendships and seeing where they could challenge themselves. It was also very visible to me how the students were taking care of one another; a value that is always so important to us. As always, I thank the teachers who have looked after and cared for the needs of each and every student and I look forward to joining Yr 4 families in welcoming the group back to Redlands at 2.30pm this Friday on the Murdoch Street side of the Campus.

NAPLAN – Yrs 3 and 5

This week saw students across Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is more commonly known. Our students can take pride in the way in which they approached these formal assessments and our starting point in Yrs 3 and 5 is always to ensure that the students do not feel any undue pressure, that they are appropriately prepared for the format of the tests, and that they were provided the conditions to do their very best, all that we can ever ask of them. My thanks are extended to Ms Atkins (Junior Campus Dean of Administration) for her considerable work behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran smoothly and to class and Learning Plus teachers for looking after the academic and pastoral needs of their students, both before and during these tests. We look forward to receiving the results in August, at which point parents will also receive a detailed breakdown of their child’s assessments.

State Tennis Champion

We were thrilled to hear that Yr 5 student, Stella Simpson-Morgan, was part of the successful Combined Independent Schools of NSW team that emerged victorious at last week’s State Championships in Albury. Competing alongside and against players a year older than her, Stella played some great tennis all week winning nearly all of her singles and doubles matches. We are all very proud of her success but I also acknowledge her humility, a quality that belies her young age. Well done, Stella.

Debating

Our Debating program has been one of our largest extra-curricular opportunities for Junior School students this year and alongside the weekly sessions for interested students in Yrs 4, 5 and 6, we have also had two teams competing in an Interschool Friday evening Debating competition. Our Yr 6 team has been successful in three out of seven debates whilst our Yr 5 team have gone one better, reaching the Semi Finals this Friday by winning five of their seven debates. We wish them all the very best and look forward to sharing news of this Semi Final next week.

House Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to all of our students who took part in last Friday’s annual House Cross Country Carnival. In beautiful weather, it was inspiring to see students challenge themselves and earn House points in competitive races, fun runs, class relays and House relays or a combination of these different events. There were some wonderful personal bests for many students but of equal note, I was delighted to see the students having fun and showing great sportsmanship.

My thanks are extended to our Sports Department, this Carnival led by Ms Dongas, and our team of teachers and parent helpers who helped to ensure that the day was a success. Well done to Cowper House who emulated their success in the pool last term with another overall success and we also congratulate the runners selected for the Redlands Cross Country team who will compete in the HICES Carnival in Orange later this month.

Art Prize Parent Evening

It was delightful to enjoy the company of parents and colleagues at last Thursday evening’s Redlands Art Prize Parent Evening at the National Art School. For many I spoke with, this was their first experience of the event but I know it will not be their last. Photos can be viewed here.

Mother’s Day Classic

Congratulations and thank you to the many students, staff and families involved in last Sunday’s Mother’s Day Classic run, an event that brings together all sections of our school. This has always been an important date in our community’s calendar and this year was certainly no different and I have enjoyed hearing how the event went from all three groups, despite the weather.

Year 7 2019 Transition Session

On Monday, our Yr 6 students and parents enjoyed another opportunity to spend time on the Senior Campus as another step in their transition to secondary schooling. The students and parents were able to hear from Senior leaders, Ms McGarry, Deputy Principal, Mr Corcoran, Head of Secondary School, and Miss Shaw, Dean of Students, on a range of matters that will be increasingly relevant in the coming months. The presentation is now on the Yr 6 page of Redlands Pulse for your reference and please don’t hesitate to contact me if there are things that need clarification.

A Special Morning

For Mother’s Day this year the front of my special card said “It’s not what we have in our life, but who we have in our life that counts”. This was clearly evident at the Mother’s Day morning celebration in Dunnet Hall and activities that followed in the classrooms. The teachers gave the children ownership of the activities they wanted to complete with their mother, grandmother or special friend. As expected, they came up with wonderful choices. Wandering from room to room, I saw some of these unique ideas including self-portrait drawings, abstract art work, still-life drawings, origami flowers, poetry writing and most interestingly, a massage and pampering station. Thank you for joining us on this special day and I hope you took away some lovely memories. Additional thanks must go to the Junior Canteen staff and Facilities team for their assistance with the organisation of this event.

Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize

Last Thursday evening I attended the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Parents’ Evening at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, which was well attended by the Early Childhood section of the School. Thank you for your support of the 22nd anniversary of this esteemed prize, featuring very special art works from well-respected members of the art community and up and coming artists. Amongst the judges this year were Visual Arts Coordinator, Mark Harpley, and Visual Arts teacher, Fabian Byrne. They remarked that this year’s Prize offered a very strong field of artwork in both the established and emerging artist categories, making it particularly difficult to select an outright winner. Gail Hastings’ artwork was awarded the winning prize in the established artist category for her work Colour Circle: four colour scheme for a room, which was noted by judges to be playful and inventive. Mr Harpley added that this work will be an important addition to the Redlands Collection providing students a provocative teaching and learning tool referencing the colour wheel.

We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong tradition of generously giving back to the School and we are most appreciative of the families who attend events such as this and give of their time and generosity with sponsorships, community building events, volunteering and donations. The building of the New Learning Hub, which Prep students will have the use of when they reach the Senior Campus, is a chance for families to donate to the Building Fund. A unique opportunity to have a family plaque on a Legacy Board at the entrance to the Learning Hub is available to reserve. If you would like further details on this very special initiative, please email Dana Casimaty, Director of Development.

Launch of the Spring Fair

This week I had the pleasure of attending the Early Childhood Parent Group where the launch of this year’s Spring Fair was shared. Thanks must go to Mrs Trudi Waterhouse and Mrs Jean Martin for their vision and enthusiastic approach to this year’s Fair. I have fond memories of my very first day at Redlands which fell on the 2016 Spring Fair day. The School is most appreciative of the time that has already gone into the preparation and planning for this very special event and I look forward to it with anticipation.

Waste Free Wednesday

The students in the Prep School have been very enthusiastic about Waste Free Wednesday and are committed to reducing the amount of rubbish found in our playground. Last week, 101 students in the Prep School participated in Waste Free Wednesday and this week we had an astonishing 130 students participate. Some students are so eager to reduce waste that their lunchbox is free of waste over the course of an entire week. It is wonderful to see how motivated students are in taking care of our school environment and more importantly, developing an understanding of how rubbish can affect and impact our lives.

Yr 2 Camp Information Session

On Wednesday 30 May, the Prep School will be holding a Yr 2 Camp Information Session for interested families. The session will be held in the Arnold Library on the Junior Campus, beginning promptly at 3.30pm, finishing at 4.30pm. David Gregory, Head of Outdoor Education, Nicola Sharp, Yr 2 Coordinator and Shelly Acland, Prep School Counsellor, will be in attendance and sharing pertinent information about the Yr 2 Camp program.

Part of this discussion will centre around the School’s Outdoor Education philosophy for students of this age and our understanding of the range of student emotions, abilities and child-development rates. As such, we respectfully ask that children not be in attendance for this particular session. For any Yr 2 parents who have children across the Prep School, we would like to offer additional care for students, if required, in Two Crimson and Two Aqua classrooms after school. If you would like to use this service, you must register by  emailing earlychildhood@redlands.nsw.edu.au BEFORE 23 May. If you are unable to attend this session, all information, including all questions and answers will be uploaded onto the Yr 2 section of Redlands Pulse.

You Can Sit With Me

On Friday 1 June, the Junior Campus will be joining together with their buddies at lunch time to observe You Can Sit With Me day. This initiative began to strengthen communities with children of all ages, fostering friendships across schools. You Can Sit With Me reminds everyone in our school that we welcome anyone to sit with us regardless of interests, ability and age. On the day, we are encouraging all students to wear a touch of yellow. If you are interested in buying a pencil or bag tag, please visit their website. All proceeds from the sale of items go to the Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

Girls’ Uniform Trial

As part of ongoing consultation with students and parents regarding the School uniform, we are trialling girls’ trousers this Winter, Terms 2 and 3. The School has recently sourced smaller sizes for Prep students. If you are interested in trousers for the Winter for your daughter, please visit the Uniform Shop. There are black socks available to purchase to wear with the navy trousers.

Staffing at Redlands House

We will be very pleased to welcome Miss Nicholls and Miss Calacoci back to Redlands House on Monday. We hope their university placements went well and we are looking forward to hearing all about their time in other settings. Miss Webber will depart for her adventure to Canada on Monday. We wish her happy and safe travels. Miss DeAngelis, Mrs Hutchings and Mrs Mahabadian will continue to work with Blue Class with Miss Nicholls until Miss Webber returns. The children are familiar with these staff members, who have been working at Redlands on a casual and part time basis for some time.

Illness

As the cooler weather of Winter approaches and we come into cold and flu season, we encourage you to please keep your child(ren) at home if they are unwell. This prevents the spread of infection amongst the children and staff. If your child is absent, could you please send an email to Mrs Donna Tait to be placed in your child’s file. Thank you.

Mother’s Day Celebration

We trust that all of our families had a lovely Mother’s Day last Sunday. It was so nice to see so many of you on Monday for our celebration. The children enjoyed introducing you to their friends and sharing some of the experiences and activities with you. Thank you for joining us.

Basketball

Congratulations to Kate Stanbridge who competed for the ISA Basketball team in the NSWCIS Championships last week. The team had some great games and finished 3rd overall. Well done Kate.

Cross Country

On Saturday, Redlands competed at the CAS/GPS Cross Country Carnival for the first time. The Carnival was hosted by Knox Grammar School at St Ives Showground and attracted many independent schools from across NSW. The meet was great preparation towards the ISA Cross Country Carnival which is coming up on the 30 May.

James Barelle (Yr 9) competed in the Junior 4k and was the first ISA runner across the line, and Ben Kittle (Yr 11) competed in the Intermediate 6k, and was also first ISA runner across the line. Both students braved the cold and wet conditions. Congratulations to both of these athletes for their excellent runs. A big thank you to co-coach Eliza Peirce for her assistance with coaching on the day. Next week’s Carnival will be at North Ryde Common hosted by The Scots College.

Training will continue this Friday morning at 6.45am at Primrose Oval with time trials for Yrs, 7, 8 and 9 and training for Yrs 10, 11 and 12.

Football

On Saturday the Redlands Boys First XI held their first Division 1 competitive ISA game at home against St Patricks College. When the game started it was clear to see that it would be a tough challenge as both teams were providing attacking and defensive excellence however as the first half ended 0-0, we could see that we had played excellent Football at times and that there were areas where we could exploit St Patrick’s in order to possibly come out with the win. When the second half resumed we came out in full force coming close to scoring on several different occasions however halfway through the second half St Pats scored a header from a corner which put them 1-0 up. The boys put in hard effort towards the end of the final half however it wasn’t enough as the game ended 1-0, but it was played with good spirit, good intentions and there’s a lot of positives to be taken out of the game looking forward.  Michael Moore (Yr 12)

Congratulations Kate Stanbridge (Yr 10) and Sydney Stuckman (Yr 11) who were selected in the ISA Open Girls Football team, and Hannah Johns (Yr 12) was selected as a shadow player for the team. Daniel Knight (Yr 10) was selected in the ISA U16 Boys Football team and Joh Sawa (Yr 11) was selected in the ISA Open Boys Football team.

Our Girls 1st XI had a great win against Blue Mountains Grammar School. In what was a very cold morning up in the mountains, the girls came away with an impressive 5-3 victory. They now face last year’s Division 1 Champions Barker College in what will be a tight contest at Barker College on Saturday morning.

ISA Nominations

Please note we are accepting nominations for Open Boys Touch Football, Open Girls Touch Football, U15 Girls Touch Football ISA Sports. If you are interested in being nominated, please send an expression of interest to sports@redlands.nsw.edu.au with a brief playing history and preferred positions.

Netball

Congratulations to Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) who was selected in the ISA U15 Netball team and also Jemma Donoghue (Yr 12) who was selected in the ISA Opens Netball team. Anna Jackson (Yr 12) and Sienna Kerr (Yr 11) were also selected as shadow players for the ISA Opens team.

We are pleased to announce an open session on Thursday mornings to further develop everyone’s Netball skills. This is open to all Secondary School netballers and will take place in Dunnet Hall from 7.00-8.00am. They will be based around shooting and defensive work.

There was a wash out in the NSNA fixtures last weekend so please ensure you read the Redlands Rhino carefully this week in order to understand the split round this weekend.

Rugby

Congratulations to James Renwick and Michael Salter who both made it through to the next round of ISA Rugby selections. They will both play a trial match on 3 June in the Blue Mountains.

Our youngest group, the mighty 13s had their first win on the weekend in a hard-fought battle against a much larger BMGS side. To see our youngest group of boys play such a tough and controlled game was one of the highlights from a weekend which saw us win all of our games. There were some wonderful highlights from the 13s game including some massive hits from Jonah Sarich-Prince (Mini Bops) and some fantastic ball running from Riley Parton. Samuel Chubb again had another blinder at half back for the second week in a row, putting on a clinic right in front of all of the coaches and the senior boys. It was a complete team effort and an incredibly well-deserved win for the boys.

Tennis

Another fantastic Saturday of Redlands Tennis. Our Firsts played some great Tennis and were able to overcome their CCGS opposition (6-2) at Cammeray. The 2nds had a very convincing performance and were able to comfortably beat their CCGS opposition (7-1). The 3rds travelled to Barker College for the morning and came away with another impressive victory (6-2). The 4ths didn’t quite make it onto the courts due to poor weather down in Bowral and I want to thank all parents involved for being so understanding. Well done to all players. Please make sure you check the coming weekend’s fixtures.

Junior Sport

Football

All matches are as advertised on the original draw available on Redlands Pulse.

Yr 5 Football this weekend is at the Treacy Complex, 1A Dreadnought Road, Oxford Falls. Please note that Wakehurst Parkway will be closed this weekend between Narrabeen and Seaforth which is going to cause significant traffic issues on the northern beaches and will make it hard for families to reach Oxford Falls. Please allow a little extra time, or consider an alternative route.

Our Yr 6 footballers outplayed their opponents last Saturday in trying wet and windy conditions, but couldn’t get the result. Both 6A and B teams had the better of Sydney Grammar, creating more chances but just unable to find the net.

Yr 4 Blue Football scored five goals against Sydney Grammar to help them to an emphatic win. With the aid of some of the boys on the team, Stella Cunningham, Scarlett Cortes and Lucy Maher shocked the Grammar boys by netting goals. The score for Redlands Girls on the blue team 4, Sydney Grammar 0.

Rugby

Our Rugby Sevens boys continue to perform well, winning two from three games last weekend, losing their final game only narrowly to Scots after dominating Kings and Trinity in earlier matches. The Rugby XV are finding their groove and despite going down to a well drilled Tudor House team, showed great spirit and tenacity to pile on together the last try of the game. They take on Trinity Prep this week at Macquarie at 10am.

Hockey

Our Hockey girls scored twice in a dominant opening half despite being a couple of players down in their clash against Arden last week. Their 2-0 victory was a great result. With Hockey being played mainly on synthetic turf, there are rarely rain cancellations, however the system in place for checking is very good. Check blinkm.co/IPSHA and follow the prompt for your venue to get the latest updates and info on your venue.

Cross Country

Congratulations to the following students who, based on their results from last week’s Cross Country  Carnival, will go on to defend Redlands HICES Division 1 title in Orange on 29 May.

Tennis

Stella Simpson Morgan has been a leading light in Redlands Tennis now for a few years. Playing in the top ranked spot in our Summer Saturday team, Stella has faced off against some tough opponents. Stella has continued her fantastic run of wins against even tougher opposition last week in Albury at the NSWPSSA Tennis Championships. As the second ranked player in the CIS team, Stella dropped only one match in over twenty she played throughout the week. Helping her team to the State Championship medal. A brilliant outcome for a hard working and unassuming athlete. Stella will have the chance to double up next year as she is still a Yr 5 student.

Hockey

Jess Van Extel, Iona Gait and Lauren Hill trialled for NSWCIS Girls Hockey this week and showed all at the trials that our Hockey Girls are not to be trifled with! Whilst none of the girls managed to make the final 13 selected, they each performed really strongly and displayed a great level skill set and fitness.

AFL

Good luck to Isaac Brooks and Gianmarco Pradel who take on NSW best schoolboy AFL footballers in the NSWPSSA Championships in Batemans Bay next week. The boys have been training hard and have had the pleasure of a guest training session with the GWS Giants at their training facility in a solid build up for the big tournament.

Exams

RAD exams entries will be going in soon. Students participating in RAD Ballet exams must be attending at least two Ballet classes per week to be considered for the grade being examined. If any students do not want to be put forward for an exam, please make sure to let your teacher know.

Good luck to all the students doing their exams in June.

Edumate

Most of our Curriculum and Dance Academy classes are now online. This means that we can mark attendance online as well as show a student’s full daily commitment to the School. Some students work in the Ballet studio as late as 7.30pm many nights of the week to perfect their craft. Being part of the rest of the timetable means that teachers can see those commitments online.

Lost Property

Thank you to all those parents and students who collected their lost property. We have now disposed of the clothing that is not part of the Redlands uniform and remained uncollected.

Can’t Come to Class?

Please do not forget to let us know if sickness, injury or change of circumstance has occurred.

Meet the Music Series 2

The Bernstein Songbook

Last Thursday, Yr 11 and 12 classes attended a performance at the Sydney Opera House to listen to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Choirs present a concert titled The Bernstein Songbook. Leonard Bernstein was one of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century: conductor, pianist, inspiring TV presenter and a composer whose creations ranged from symphonies for the concert hall to one of the greatest musicals of all time, West Side Story. In celebrating the centenary of his birth, this concert represented an inspiring account of his music for stage and screen. New York, New York from On the Town set the scene and then followed on exhilarating program with guest soloist Australian soprano Lorina Gore and two stars of Broadway, Kim Criswell and Julian Ovenden. All the favourites, including Glitter and be Gay (Candide), Maria (West Side Story), as well as some beautiful and surprising rarities were experienced as part of this concert.

Cocurricular Photos and Senior Music Festival Celebration – Monday 25 June

Due to unexpected wet weather last term, Cocurricular photos for the following Music Ensembles will take place on Monday 25 June in conjunction with the Senior Music Festival Celebration Afternoon Tea. After the presentation of prizes to the winners of the Senior Music Festival Ticket Selling Competition, photos will be held for Advanced Choir, Redlands Combined Choir, Redlands Orchestra and Redlands Combined Concert Band.
