Sinfonia Flamenca

Juan Carmona Septet and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Last week, Yr 10 Music Elective students attended a concert at the Sydney Opera House in listening to a collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Juan Carmona Septet. In the Sinfonia Flamenca project, originator Juan Carmona took up the formidable challenge of associating a Flamenco ensemble with a Symphony Orchestra. The challenge was inherent in the profound differences between the forms and musical language of both Flamenco and Classical music. Director of the septet, Juan, is a self-taught musician who has been pushing the boundaries of Flamenco music for 20 years. Beyond traditional forms, this ensemble explored the authentic expressions of Flamenco, infused with rhythmic vocal techniques that considers Indian and Arabic inflections. This, together with symphonic fabric layers, created a performance where the magnificence of colour and harmony of the orchestral tradition enriched the Andalusian style of the Juan Carmon Septet.
