A Special Birthday Celebration

On Monday, Redlands hosted a birthday morning tea to celebrate Mr John Roberts, one of the three Redlands Founding Trustees, 100th birthday. Guests included Penny Roberts, John’s daughter from the Class of 1974, fellow Trustees Mr John Lang OAM and Mr Bruce Adams, Mr and Mrs Robert Dunnet, Ms Glenda McLoughlin, Redlands Chair, and Board members, Principal Dr Peter Lennox, Deputy Principal Ms Sarah McGarry, School Executives, Secondary and Junior School Captains and Yr 12 singers, who sang Mr Roberts a very special Happy Birthday! To mark the occasion, Mr Roberts brought along his congratulatory message from HRH Queen Elizabeth.

Mr John Roberts has had a very positive impact on Redlands. During his time as a Redlands RPFA Chairman, coeducation was introduced, Early Childhood education was re-established, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme commenced, the former Cremorne Girls’ High School, now the Junior Campus, was purchased and the High Country Campus was developed as a base for Outdoor Education and Winter School.

Participation

At today’s Term 3 Cocurricular Assembly we had the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the many and varied cocurricular contributions our students have made at the School over the past two terms. From service to sports, public speaking to performing arts, our Redlands students involve themselves in so many different activities and shine in so many different ways. And while today we specifically recognised some of the outstanding individual, team and group performances in these areas, I would like to especially praise those who might not win an award but who still participate with pride for their school and passion for their activity. In particular, I want to acknowledge the Yr 12 students who have continued participating in their cocurricular activities all the way through this last term of their schooling. Their leadership and commitment sets an example for all other students at the School to follow.

In recent conversations with Yr 12 students, a number of them have mentioned that one of the highlights of their schooling experience is the relationships they develop with students across the different Year Groups. I have witnessed many of these interactions in recent weeks, whether it is when a small group of Yr 7 students, who participated in the musical, run up to our Yr 12 Arts Captains in the playground as if they had just seen a long-lost friend, or the beaming smile one of our junior athletes has on their face after one of our Yr 12 competitors stops to congratulate them on their performance at the ISA Athletics Carnival. I am certain that these interactions are not just highlights for our Yr 12 students, but they are also highlights for these junior students, as well.

ISA Athletics

On Tuesday, I had the great pleasure of attending the ISA Athletics Carnival at Homebush. These athletes who ran, jumped and threw on the day chose to take on this “extra” sports commitment between seasons and compete for the School. Redlands not only had its largest team in recent memory but also achieved some of its best results ever placing 2nd overall in the Division 1 Junior Girls, 2nd overall in the Division 1 Intermediate Girls, 2nd overall in the Division 1 Senior Girls and 2nd overall in the Division 1 Senior Boys. Congratulations to the Junior Girls, Intermediate Girls and Senior Boys who all won their respective 4×100 relays and the following students who won individual events on the day: Leopold Colin (Yr 10), Zachary Johnson (Yr 12), Emma Mahon (Yr 9), Emmi McDonald (Yr 8), Gus Miller (Yr 9), Gabriel O’Sullivan (Yr 12), Cameron Pascoe (Yr 11), Phoebe Rathbone (Yr 10), Lulu Simpson (Yr 10), Lauren Smith (Yr 8), Ellis Teudt (Yr 11), Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) and Alexandra York (Yr 10). A special mention must be made to Alex York who broke five (yes, five) ISA records on the day. What an amazing achievement! And lastly a big thank you to Mr Walker, Mr Ellis and all of the Sports Department and coaches who assisted with Athletics this season.

Snowsports

Last week we also had a large number of students competing at the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Perisher. These students have progressed through States to represent the School on the national stage. Once again, Redlands ruled the slopes with our students competing across age groups and disciplines. We had a large number of students finish in the top three in various events and a special congratulations must be made to the following students who placed first in either an individual or team event during the Championships: Tim Goerner (Yr 12), Braydon Wessels (Yr 11), George Murphy (Yr 9), Nick Goerner (Yr 9), Zeke Weir (Yr 9), Billy Thomas (Yr 8), Harrison Fung (Yr 8) and Ethan McFarlane (Yr 7). A special thank you to Mr Campbell and all of the teachers who have assisted with Snowsports throughout the season.

Spring Fair

The Redlands Spring Fair is now just a couple of days away and I know many parents are busily preparing for what is a special day on the school calendar. A huge thank you in advance to all of you who have volunteered your time to assist on the day. Parent involvement and support is one of the main reasons why the Redlands community is so special. The weather forecast looks good (spring has definitely sprung) and I know the excitement across the school is building. I look forward to seeing many of you on the day. Sorry, no dogs are permitted at the Fair.

Important Student Health and Safety Notice: Spring Fair

Parents are advised that there will be First Aid provided at the Spring Fair this coming Saturday, but our First Aid provider will not have access to medication or medical equipment held by the School for student use.

Prep Games Day

We invite all families to join us for the annual Preparatory Games Day being held on Friday 28 September. All students from Kindergarten to Yr 2 will be involved in running and field events on the Junior Campus oval. Students are all expected to wear their sports uniform; sunscreen and a hat are essential, as we are expecting warm weather. Parents may take their child home at the end of the Games Day. We do ask however, that you sign your child out at Prep Reception before leaving the School. Staff will be supervising any students remaining after Prep Games Day until the end of the day. After School Care will be operating as normal.

Swimming Program Yr 2

The Yr 2 students have had the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons at the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre this week. Utilising the skills of highly accredited swim specialists from the Aqua Bliss Association, students were taught a variety of stroke techniques and given assistance at their level of swimming ability. This four day program is not intended to replace any existing lessons that students regularly attend, rather enhance some skills and provide organisational practice as students learn to change, pack and follow instructions. Additionally, these skills will assist the students as they prepare for the Yr 2 Camp at the end of Term 3. When I visited the pool this week, I was most impressed with the level of coaching afforded to the students and the gains students made in only four intensive lessons.

Yr 2 Camp Reminders

As we make our final preparations for the Yr 2 Camp next week, please take note of the following:

  • All information you will need (equipment, what to pack in which bag etc) is in the detailed Camp Information letter, which is available on Redlands Pulse
  • All medication is to be brought to school on the morning we depart for camp, in a labelled zip lock bag. Instructions for administering the medication are to be inside the bag on the Short Term Medication Authority Form, which you can also download from Redlands Pulse
  • If you wish to have a conversation about the medical needs of your child, or the administration of medication whilst at Camp, this needs to take place with Mrs Simes prior to departure. Please make an appointment via earlychildhood@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Sending a spare set of clothes for your child would be appreciated, for when students need to change out of wet or dirty clothing.

From the Principal

Last Monday we were delighted to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mr John Roberts with a special morning tea, and a rousing “Happy Birthday” where he was serenaded by a group of Year 12 students. John was most appreciative and spoke of his involvement with the School, commencing in 1958 when the first of his three daughters enrolled at Redlands. John’s special birthday milestone was celebrated by morning tea guests including the Chair of Redlands Board, Ms Glenda McLoughlin, other Board Directors, founding trustees Mr John Lang and Mr Bruce Adams, the School Executive, Secondary and Junior School Captains and Foundation team. All those in attendance were very impressed to learn that during the time John was involved with the School, he attended 50 consecutive Speech Days. Happy Birthday John!

I wish to congratulate the four Year 12 Drama students Olivia Allen, Francesca Brown, Stella Everett and Lachlan Stewart who have been nominated for OnSTAGE, the HSC Drama Showcase, for their HSC individual performances. These nominations are a credit to the skills and hard work of the students, supported by their Drama teachers. The OnSTAGE performances will be held at the Seymour Centre from 9-15 February 2019.

There has been much success on the slopes and the athletics track over the past week. Our Snowsports team of 48 skiers and snowboarders achieved some exceptional results at the National Snowsports Interschools at the end of last week. Six Redlands students and teams were crowned National Champions, achieving 6 Gold, 2 Silver and 8 Bronze medals, along with 16 other top 10 places and our Snowsports team finished 2nd overall in the Coed Secondary category. I make special mention of the six National Champions:

Daisy Thomas (Yr 6) – Div 4 Girls Moguls
Billy Thomas (Yr 8) – Div 3 Boys Moguls
George Murphy (Yr 9) – Div 2 Boys Moguls
Div 4 Girls Moguls
Div 3 Boys Moguls
Div 1 Boys Snowboard

Congratulations to our Secondary School Athletics team on their significant success competing at the ISA Athletics Carnival on Tuesday. Our Junior, Intermediate and Senior Girls and Senior Boys finished 2nd in their respective divisions and our Girls team finished 2nd Overall in Division 1. I make special note of Year 10 athlete Alexandra York who won Gold in five events – 100m, 200m, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump – breaking the ISA record in every one of these events. I also recognise Emma Mahon (Yr 9) and Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) who each won three Gold medals in their middle distance events, Lauren Smith (Yr 8) for winning Gold in three sprint events, and Emmi McDonald (Yr 8) who won 2 Gold and 1 Silver in her track and field events. Our Relay teams also enjoyed great success with wins by our Junior Girls, Intermediate Girls and Senior Boys. Further details can be found in the Secondary School Sport section of Note Day. Our Secondary Athletics team’s achievements come hot on the heels of the Junior School’s 2nd placing in the Division 1 HICES Carnival a couple of weeks ago and today, 19 Junior School athletes are representing HICES at the CIS Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. I look forward to reporting on their results in next week’s Note Day.

Well done to our Snowsports and Athletics teams and a sincere thank you to our Heads of Sport, Mr Tom Kindred and Mr Adrian Carter, Snowsports Administrator Mr Bruce Campbell, Athletics Coach Mr Nick Walker, Sports Administrator Mr Cameron Ellis and all the other Sports staff and coaches for their hard work and support of the teams.

I am very much looking forward to the Redlands Spring Fair this Saturday and encourage all families to attend what will undoubtedly be a wonderful day of carnival fun. In order to reduce the environmental impact of the fair, families are encouraged to bring their own coffee mugs, water bottles and tote bags. Redlands KeepCups and water bottles are on sale now at the Uniform Shop and will be available for purchase at the Redlands Café and Canteen on Saturday.

Humanitarian Trip

On Wednesday 19 September, Jacqui Holth (Aymon’s mum) is flying to Nepal and will be heading to a remote and incredibly poor community in the isolated Western area of the country, to work on a community school project. If anyone has any old reading glasses that are longer in use, please would you ask your child to bring them to Mr Atkins or Aymon Holth on Monday 17 or Tuesday 18 September. Jacqui will also be returning to Nepal in April 2019 and will be looking to take over old and unused laptops (clean), chargers and more glasses too. Jacqui can be contacted directly at jacquiholth@icloud.com

Well done, to our Yr 9 students Amelie Archer, Samuel Harrap, Beau Davies, Riley Fitzgerald, Rachel Kinghorn and James Barwise for their participation and representation of Redlands on the day. Achievements

Nationals for Snowsports: As representatives of Yr 8, we had a number of students who competed in the Interschools National Snowsports Championships held in Perisher last week. Mia Kloiser-Jones and Callie Forest (with Sienna Wessels – Yr 7) as a team, placed 3rd in the Snowboard Cross event, and narrowly missed the podium in the Alpine Snowboard event, coming 4th. Billy Thomas and Ben Harrington (with Nicholas Fitzhenry) came 12th Alpine, with Billy (Thomas), Harrison Fung and Ben (Harrington) placing 6th in Skier-X. One of the most extraordinary results of the week was Billy Thomas who is the National Champion in Moguls and placed second in Slopestyle overall. Similarly, Callie Forest placed 5th overall in Slopestyle. The Redlands results were exceptional, and we are very proud of all Yr 8 students who competed. Hard work and team spirit were ever evident amongst the team.

Congratulations to Brianna Irvine who took her Grade 6 AMEB Alto Saxophone examination last week. Brianna achieved exceptional results and should be incredibly proud of all the hard work she has assigned to her music. The pieces she played for the examination included Sagittarius – Barry Cockcroft, Solo De Concert – J.B. Singlee, Valse Vanite – Rudy Wiedoeft, Hoe Down – Lachlan Davidson, Aquarius – Barry Cockcroft and Capricorn – Barry Cockcoft.

Pastoral Care Focus

Study Skills and Developing Personal Study Habits – It has been an exceptionally busy time for Yr 8 with a very full assessment schedule. As feedback is given, it is important for students to take the time to read feedback closely, refocus, set new academic goals and prepare ahead for the Yearly Examinations in Term 4 (Week 3). Our Pastoral focus during Weeks 9 and 10 (Term 3), and Weeks 1 and 2 (Term 4) will be on ‘academic success’. The focus areas will include, organisation and filing, time management skills, dealing with distractions, life balance, managing stress, and the importance of sleep. If looking for strategies which you can use at home, you will find additional information in the Study Skills Handbook (username: Redlands / password: 68results).

Uniform

It is important that students remain vigilant about appearance and uniform. For girls, could we please be aware that the hem of skirts are to fall to the top of the knees and the grey tights are free from holes or ladders. There have been significant growth spurts amongst our boys and therefore, hems of trousers may need to be taken down. On a side note to this, regulation grey socks are to be worn.

Lockers

Can we please encourage students to ensure that they store away all items in their lockers at school and keep it locked. There are numerous students who either do not have locks on their lockers or choose to leave their personal belongings outside of their assigned locker.

National Snowsports Success

Last week, we were extremely proud to have 12 Junior School skiers compete at the 2018 Interschools National Championships in Perisher, which in itself is a remarkable achievement for them. We extend hearty congratulations to all of them and were ecstatic to hear of the following podium finishes and remarkable national recognition for the following students:

Gold Medals
Daisy Thomas – Individual Australian Champion, Division 4, Girls Moguls
Division 4 Girls Moguls – Daisy Thomas, Felicity Schlederer and Mia McFarlane

Silver Medals
Julius Keller – Individual Silver Medallist, Division 4 Boys Moguls

Bronze Medals
Division 4 Boys Moguls – Julius Keller, Sebastian Speziali and Liam McFarlane

Junior School Nationals Competitors
Isabelle Bannon, Josie Bannon, Julianna Harrington, Ava Keller, Julius Keller, Liam McFarlane, Mia McFarlane, Gianmarco Pradel, Felicity Schlederer, Sebastian Speziali, Daisy Thomas, and Penny Vincent-McGovern

To compete at this level requires a significant amount of dedication and practice and I also thank their parents for their support of both time and undertaking varying roles to support the team down at the snow over the season.

Leaving a Legacy

On Monday, along with our Junior School Captains, Celine Moore-Patel and Conor Petersen, I was privileged to attend a morning tea celebrating the 100th birthday of Mr John Roberts, a former parent and Redlands Board Director, Secretary and Treasurer from 1976 to 1997, after whom our new Senior Campus Music Centre has recently been named as well. Over morning tea, Mr Roberts talked about his connection with Redlands over a remarkable 60 years, during which time he has contributed so much to Redlands.

During his time on the Board, Mr Roberts was part of a group of people who introduced numerous innovations as part of their legacy for others to have benefited from since, including the introduction of co-education, the opening of the Margaret Roberts Preparatory School (named after John’s late wife), the introduction of the International Baccalaureate and the purchase of the former Cremorne Girls’ High School site which is now our wonderful Junior Campus. It is safe to say that Mr Roberts’ legacy at Redlands will continue to impact the lives of thousands of students in the future, just as it already has done in the past although he also spoke proudly of a record that may never be broken, that of attending an astonishing 50 consecutive Speech Days! Many happy returns and thank you, Mr Roberts.

Debating

A number of our students have represented Redlands on Fridays this term in the Schools Debating Network Competition and I thank and congratulate them, along with Mrs Sharp and their coaches.

All of the students have made positive contributions and our Primary A team, which is made up of Yr 6 students, have made it through to the Semi Finals this Friday, where they will debate against St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School. We wish them all the best and congratulate all of the students involved this term:

Primary A (Yr 6): Arya Gapaillard, Ahnu Guan, Alfie Leach, Jack Petering, Sophia Rolon, Madison Stanley, Anneka Steele and Charli Waterland

Primary B (Yr 5): Bettina Butcher, Oliver Cooke, Kiana Gapaillard, James Gray, Ruby Holgate and Carolina Pedro-Inacio

Netball Finals

Last Friday, two of our Junior School Netball teams competed in the Northern Suburbs Netball Association Grand Finals. Sadly, the storm that shook Sydney also impacted these finals and our Yr 4 team’s final was postponed at half time due to the immediate threat of lightning and this half time result stood as the overall result, which meant the girls finished as runners-up. Our Yr 5 team, who were due to play the game after, did not even get on the court and by the process of their league positions, were awarded as Runners Up against their opposition who had finished higher. Congratulations to all of the girls involved and to the many students and teachers who braved the weather and traffic to get there to support the teams.

The Kids Cancer Project

Tomorrow sees our Junior Campus fundraiser to support The Kids Cancer Project and students are asked to donate at least a gold coin to wear mufti clothes with ‘a touch of gold’ as we again support the research work of this charity which holds particular significance for our Redlands community.

We will have the following merchandise for sale for Junior School students who have also been advised, should they wish to purchase anything additional items to support this fundraiser.

Bouncy balls $2
Badge $1
Wristband 50c
Raffle ticket for bear prize:     50c

Living our School Values

I regularly speak to our students about the significance of living our School Values, particularly when no one is watching. Our School Values of Compassion, Fairness, Honesty, Moral Courage, Respect and Responsibility underpin so much of what we do and are values which we hope become part of who our students are. As teachers, we often look for intrinsic examples of these values in our students and I was delighted to hear from a teacher who had observed Yr 6 student, Charli Waterland, demonstrating respect and responsibility earlier this week.

Charli was waiting for her mother in the park area near the school and was observed picking up bits of litter that were on the ground and placing them in the bin. In approaching her to commend her, the teacher found out that this is something that Charli regularly does while she waits to be collected, simply because it is ‘the right thing to do’. Thank you for being such a positive role model to others and a wonderful representative of the School.

Redlands Spring Fair

The time has come! The sun is predicted to shine! I am looking forward to joining many, many others in our school and local community this week at our biennial Spring Fair. There has been a bubbling level of excitement and anticipation amongst the students. I also acknowledge the significant contributions of so many of our parents and staff in the months of voluntary planning and preparation time which will ensure Saturday will be an event to remember. Sorry, no dogs are permitted at the Spring Fair.

Team First!

Team first is a mentality and approach to culture that is commonly used in a range of sports teams around the world. It is a saying that embodies the selfless act of an individual placing the greater needs of the team ahead of their own, something which is critical to the success of any sporting group. Having this approach creates a dual goal for students within sport and life:

  1. Any meaningful accomplishment in life is only achieved through giving to a greater good
  2. Collaboration and team work will always triumph over individual ambition

The mentality of ‘team first’ was proudly demonstrated in our Athletics team at the ISA Athletics Carnival held on Tuesday. Redlands was one of the only schools across the day that was seen supporting other members of their team all the way until the last event, the victorious 4x100m Senior Boys Relay (pictured below, final leg run by Cameron Pascoe past the Redlands crowd).

Throughout the day we had countless students competing in a range of events and disciplines regardless of their specialty or training background. This showed that they were willing to give their greatest effort to the needs of the team, potentially sacrificing their best result in an individual event.

Congratulations to the following students who embodied this ‘team first’ mentality across the day by competing in five or more events for the team:

  • Alexandra York (7 events)
  • Cameron Pascoe (6 events)
  • Jemma Donoghue (5 events)
  • Olivia Donoghue (5 events)
  • Rebecca Faurby (5 events)
  • Lulu Simpson (5 events)

Go Redlands!

Athletics

On Tuesday, Redlands best track and field athletes competed at the ISA Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. The Division 1 team was led by the Athletics Captains, Anna Jackson and John Economides, along with a great team of coaches from Mosman Athletics Club who worked closely with the team on the day of the Carnival. The entire team bought an incredible amount of team spirit to the carnival with every athlete cheering track side and competing in their events to the best of their ability.

All-round talented track and field athlete Alexandra York (Yr 10) dominated the Girls 15s 100m, 200m, Long Jump, Intermediate Girls Triple Jump and High Jump, winning all five events along with breaking the ISA record in all five events. Congratulations to Alex!

Intermediate Middle Distance runner Emma Mahon (Yr 9) had strong wins in the Intermediate Girls 3000m, Intermediate Girls 1500m and the U15 Girls 800m.

Our Captains, Anna Jackson and an injured John Economides have been excellent role models for the entire team and we thank them for all the work they have done with the team.

I wish all the Redlands athletes the best of luck at the CIS Athletics Championships coming up on 20 September.

Netball

Last weekend saw the Netball season draw to an end with five teams playing in the Grand Finals at NSNA. Every team that qualified for the final series made it to the big league and fought hard across three rounds of finals.

We had all three of our Yr 7 teams playing which is outstanding and an exciting indication of the future of Netball at Redlands. The 7 Navy team played in a hotly contested final against SGHS and unfortunately went down in the last quarter 13-21. The 7 Gold team had an up and down game and fought hard to bring the score line back in their favour in the 3rd quarter but were runners up to Monte with a score of 20-14. Our 7 Blue team have shown huge improvements in their teamwork and were determined to give a dominant Loreto team a tough game. While the girls played exceptionally well they lost to Loreto 37-11.

Our Yr 8 Blue team were always going to have a tough Grand Final against NSGHS having faced them in two very close games during the rounds. Redlands went goal for goal for most of the game in a high pressure match but ended up going down to NSGHS by four with a final score of 15-19.

The biggest upset of the season came from our 15 Navy team, who scraped into the Semi Finals in 4th, and faced an almost undefeated MCC team, who finished top of their competition. In the last round game, MCC defeated Redlands by a significant 11 points. Redlands 15 Navy took to the court and showed no mercy from the first whistle. By keeping calm under pressure and playing our own game, Redlands 15 Navy dominated the game from the first quarter. They were crowned the 15D division Grand Final Champions with a final score of 33-23 to Redlands.

Congratulations to all of our grand finalists for 2018 and a special congratulations to our 15 Navy team for a brilliant win.

Summer Sport

Wednesday summer sports have begun and with beautiful warm sunshine spring weather, our teams got off to a great start.

Basketball has begun and skills and drills sessions will be running in Dunnet Hall each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before school 7.15- 8.00am. It’s great to start the school day with a workout and sessions are available for players in both the mixed and girls programs. It’s bound to help too, more practice and time with ball in hand will always help to build skills. Our coaches are there and ready.

NSNA Netball

Lightning played havoc with our Grand Final Netball teams last Friday. In one of the only rained out cancellations, both of our teams unfortunately were deemed runners up for the competition after a severe electrical storm circled the courts before, on and then just after game time. It was a sad way to end an  exciting week and fabulous season, but I was very proud and amazed to see such great sportsmanship from our girls, who accepted that tough decision on the chin and were all smiles as the presentations went ahead.

These two Netball teams were a true reminder of why we play school sport; fun and friendship, and to learn some skills and fitness. I know they are very proud of their achievements this season and without doubt, so am I. It was great to see so many Redlands faces down at Willoughby in the wild weather to support the girls. Class teachers, students, friends and siblings were out in force.

HICES Athletics Reps

Redlands athletes hit the track at CIS this week. Results and photos coming next week in Note Day.

The Term 4 draw for IPSHA Sports is in final draft and will be available next week. Our Cricket, Basketball and Tennis teams all begin fixtures on 20 October and play six matches through to the end of November. Details are coming.

Sinfonia Flamenca

Juan Carmona Septet and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Last week, Yr 10 Music Elective students attended a concert at the Sydney Opera House in listening to a collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Juan Carmona Septet. In the Sinfonia Flamenca project, originator Juan Carmona took up the formidable challenge of associating a Flamenco ensemble with a Symphony Orchestra. The challenge was inherent in the profound differences between the forms and musical language of both Flamenco and Classical music. Director of the septet, Juan, is a self-taught musician who has been pushing the boundaries of Flamenco music for 20 years. Beyond traditional forms, this ensemble explored the authentic expressions of Flamenco, infused with rhythmic vocal techniques that considers Indian and Arabic inflections. This, together with symphonic fabric layers, created a performance where the magnificence of colour and harmony of the orchestral tradition enriched the Andalusian style of the Juan Carmon Septet.

Yr 11 HSC and IB Music Showcase
