Music

The Music Department’s final week for Term 1 saw exciting events and concerts happening across all three sections of the School. From the Yr 2 Strings Open Lesson, Easter Service, Assemblies, Battle of the Bands, Opera House Excursions, Variety Shows – there is always someone making and sharing their music in our great School!

We’re looking forward to having our Yr 12 cohort at their HSC and IB workshops during the holidays (see below), and we wish our entire community a safe and refreshing Easter.

Yr 2 Strings Open Lesson

Year 2 strings students wowed their parents and guests in our open lessons on Monday. Showing off tunes like The DAD Song, Rock on A and Jig, beginner students were able to share their new skills on violin and cello, whilst the Rainbow Strings performed a number of pieces as a small Chamber Group. A big shout out to all of our Strings tutors who have harnessed the wonderful energy and enthusiasm of our learners, and we look forward to seeing our students grow as musicians.

Battle of the Bands 2023

On Monday night, a packed house witnessed an epic Battle of the Bands across three age divisions.  Our guest judge and industry specialist Daniel Walsh was impressed by the talent and dedication that shone from the Junior Guest acts through to the oldest division. Yr 12 students Elke Mueller and Jack Lazzarotto took out the Overall Winner’s trophy, and we congratulate all the winners listed below for their successes. It was great to be able to feature Elke & Jack and the winners of Division One as performers in the Final Assemblies today. Thanks once again to Mr Montz and our Music Tutors for their great work with the Redlands Rock Band program.

Red Factor

What a fantastic way to end the term with our annual Redlands highlight variety show – Red Factor! These student performances were full of energy, finesse and show stopping songs that had the audience singing along. We even had a last minute entry from the staff showing off their skills as well. Congratulations and thanks to all participants for sharing your wonderful talents with us!  We look forward to sharing the photos with our community next term.

Senior Vocal Competition Auditions

The Music Auditions iLearn Page is now open and accepting auditions for the Senior Vocal Competition that is scheduled to take place next term on Friday 9 June.  Auditions close next term on Friday 5 May. All information is available on the iLearn page.

Yr 12 HSC & IB Holiday Workshop

On Monday 17 April 2023, students in both the Yr 12 HSC and IB Music courses will have the opportunity to participate in the COGNITIVE SKILLS FOR PERFORMANCE ANXIETY WORKSHOP with Sarah Marshall. An experienced performer, teacher, examiner, counsellor and lecturer in Counselling at University of Canberra, Sarah assists others to manage performance anxiety and attain peak performance.

In addition to the workshop, students who are hoping for some additional feedback on compositions, performances, sight-singing, aural skills or musicology work are able to book sessions with Music staff who will be on hand for the whole morning.

We look forward to supporting all our senior students towards maximising their HSC/IB outcomes later this year, and ultimately towards life and industry readiness as music-makers.

HICES Music Festival

Thank you to those students who applied for coveted places at the HICES Music Festival for 2023. Early in Term 2, we will reach out to applicants to facilitate the filming of your auditions (during Choir or Band rehearsals as relevant).

Spotlight on… Junior Training Band!

We are excited to announce the next intake period for the Redlands Training Band! This program is designed for Junior School students (Yrs 3-6) who are interested in taking their musical skills to the next level, and are keen to develop their skills on their instruments.

Junior Training Band rehearsals take place on Tuesday mornings 7:15-8:15am, providing students with the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive and collaborative environment. In this program, students will receive small group support and guidance in learning the Junior Concert Band repertoire ahead of their enrolment. This will give them a head start and boost their confidence when they progress to the Concert Band.

Register now for the start of Term 2 by completing the Cocurricular Enrolment Form on Pulse. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity for your child to take their musical journey to the next level!

Yr 8 Curriculum Music Excursion

On Thursday evening we had the pleasure of taking forty Yr 8 Students to the Opera House to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform with the Philharmonia Choirs and soloists. In supporting our understanding of the Western Music History timeline (which we will explore further in Term 2), students were treated to sublime Baroque and Contemporary works by JS Bach and Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds respectively.  Several students reported that they were deeply moved by what they experienced and they led the crowd in a standing ovation! It was an especial treat to see our Redlands tutor, Chloe Lankshear radiant and mellifluous as featured soprano soloist.

AMEB Examinations

The Australian Music Examination Board Instrumental examinations will be held in September this year, with Enrolment forms due on Monday 8 May.  Please discuss the details with your child’s tutor and we will be happy to enrol on your behalf.
