Issue 10 2023 Term 1 Week 10 - 06 Apr 2023

From the Principal

At my Opening Assembly Speeches back in January, I told the students that a hope of mine this year, after three years of challenges and disruptions due to COVID-19, was to truly reconnect our community through the return of many of the events that we have not been able to run normally in recent years.

And what an action-packed term it has been.

From a successful summer sports season which culminated in numerous finals and podium finishes; to House Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals; to Service Learning initiatives both on and off campus; to Outdoor Education Camps; to a wonderful whole school Autumn Fair; to the amazing Musical – we have certainly reconnected in so many different ways.

And through it all, the students have continued to challenge and extend themselves academically and work towards achieving their own personal bests in the classroom.

This week has been a fitting culmination to the term, with a raucous Battle of the Bands on Monday night where our contemporary musicians burst into life; followed by a vibrant International Day celebration on Tuesday with colourful costumes, cultural activities and even yours truly joining the Prep School with some Bollywood dancing; to a wonderful celebratory Rowing Dinner on Tuesday evening where we acknowledged some of our dedicated senior athletes; to engaging Easter Services for Preparatory and Junior School students where our Chaplain was ably assisted by the green “Grunch”.

Experiencing this full spectrum of activities this week truly makes me proud to be the Principal of Redlands, and I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all of our amazing staff for their effort, commitment and dedication in providing these and all other opportunities this year for our students.

I wish you and your families a joyous Easter season, and I look forward to seeing students return to school after the break on Wednesday 26 April rejuvenated for Term 2, in winter uniform.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Photo Caption: International Day was a great opportunity for students to highlight their cultural backgrounds by wearing traditional dress or colours. A big thank you to all the parents who came in and shared their cultures with us.

Community Update

We are delighted to announce that our Uniform Shop now accepts the Premier’s Back to School NSW Vouchers. Purchases may be made in store or via telephone by quoting your voucher number. Vouchers expire on 30 June 2023, so remember to use them when purchasing Winter Uniform items. Information about who can apply, how to apply, how to use the Premier’s Back to School NSW Vouchers, and what to do if you have a problem with using the vouchers can be found herePlease note that vouchers cannot be used with orders via FlexiSchools.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, and to the Redlands Uniform Shop and the ever active and passionate Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) for their collective effort in fulfilling the recent Second Hand Uniform Sale.  This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.

With the end of another term upon us, the RPFA, Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) continue to actively bring our various groups together both socially and operationally. A number of end of term and term break events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

A reminder to save the date for the Redlands Gala Ball being held on Saturday 12 August at the Fullerton Hotel in the city. We look forward to welcoming parents and carers, staff, alumni and friends to this highly anticipated event that includes a three-course dinner with fine wine, live entertainment, online and live auctions and raffles, along with a live band. I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Liggins Restoration Appeal

A sincere thank you to all members of our community who generously supported the Liggins Restoration Appeal. The Liggins Building is the only remaining element of our school grounds linking almost 100 years of Redlanders.

A significant schedule of works has been undertake during the holiday break which included the refresh and upgrade of classrooms, the home for Languages. The second stage is currently in place to further refurbish the top floor which will also be a communal area with an incredible Heritage wall acknowledging our 140-year history. There is still an opportunity to contribute and make a donation towards a Family Plaque. For more information about our Heritage or how you support us, please visit HERE.

Liggins Story – Angela Ball RL 1973

I remember my first year high school roll-call class was in the top floor of the Liggins House.  It was in the first room on the eastern side of the building (above the Art room).

My surname being Ball I remember that I was seated alphabetically among Arnold, Ashton, Ball, Barton, Basil-Jones, Bennett, Bonner etc.  Mel Barton caught my school bus and we became strong friends from the beginning.

I remember the Art room downstairs below the cloak room where I experienced using clay and various art mediums such as oil paint, crayon and charcoal.  I was pretty proud of myself when one of my works was exhibited and sold in Grace Brothers Chatswood Art Exhibition.

Also on the lower floor of the Liggins House was where we sometimes had PE classes.  Dressed in our box pleated pale blue sports uniform with bloomers and a cord for the waist with tassels in the colour of our House.  Mine was yellow as I was in Cowper.

I remember Mrs French who taught me Maths in another classroom block.  She wore her academic gown over her clothes protecting them from the chalk dust.  She was a fabulous teacher and when controlling the class she’d use long words.  I can still remember hearing her saying we were being ‘obstinate’.  Had to look that one up! – Stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or chosen course of action despite attempts to persuade one to do so.  I get it now ????.

I can still picture our Headmistress Mrs Humphrey walking through the school in her academic gown with her little chihuahua dog following closely along with her. Her office was located not far from the Liggins House.

Of course we were all in the Hall watching the footage on television of Man landing on the Moon in 1969.  I remember the canteen under the Hall and buying a meat pie with sauce for lunch for about 10 cents.

I loved my years at SCEGGS and am always proud to say that’s where I went to school.  Wish I was there with you all for the luncheon.  50 Years!

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Walks will continue over the term break. Next week’s walk on Wed 12 Apr will be from Little Manly to North Head. Meet at Little Manly beach at 8.40am – no dogs on this walk. The following week’s walk on Wed 19 Apr will be from Balmoral to Clifton Gardens. Meet outside The Boatshed Balmoral. The first week back from holidays, on Wed 26 Apr, we will be walking around Narrabeen Lake. Meet outside ProKayaks on the lake at 11 Narrabeen St.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie Kimber or call 0406 691 533.

Book Club

Come along and enjoy the lively conversation of other Redlands parents from all around the world with a common love of reading. The Book Club meets twice each School term, rotating among members’ homes. There is also an annual visit to Sunday Writer’s festival (May) and sometimes to movies that are tied in with a book discussion.

Books and timing for next two meetings

To accommodate the availability of our next book champion, we will have a shorter period between our next two meetings (a 4-5 week gap).  Given this, you may want to get an early jump on the second book as well.  The following are the details of the next two books and expected timing.

  1. Next book and meeting:
  • Book – Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.
  • Meeting – Week of 15 May.  Date TBC, in the evening.
  1. Second book of Term 2:
  • Book – The Familiars by Stacey Halls.
  • Meeting – Week of either 12 June or 19 June. Date TBC, in the morning/daytime.

Hosts needed!

It would be great if we could get a couple volunteers to host our next two meetings.  If you would be happy to host a meeting, or if you might be interested but have concerns about what’s involved, please contact Monica Gessner or Sabiha Naqvi to have a chat.

Also, if you would be happy to host a meeting in the future, but are just not available to do so in May/June, please let us know as well! We still have 4 more meetings in the second half of the year to organise!

Books planned for Term 3 are: The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and BABEL by R.F. Kuang.

Rowing Dinner

Yr 7 had a great turnout for drinks night at Mosman Rowers

The Year 3 Class Parents hosted an Easter Scavenger Hunt on a soggy Sunday afternoon. The kids had an egg-cellent time finding the answers to their scavenger hunt questions at Clifton Gardens. As a reward for each right question, they received a mini egg and on completion of all questions, they received a bag of eggs. Over the course of the afternoon, the kids learnt a lot about Clifton Gardens. All left over eggs were donated to the NICU ward at RNSH and to the homeless and displaced through the AOK Community Outreach project.

What a Term!

Tuesday’s International Day was a School wide success and we were so lucky with the weather! The total amount raised from food stalls was $1639.40. Despite the busyness of the final week of term, it was great to be able to engage with International Day on the Senior Campus and contribute to the many activities taking place across the School.

Tuesday evening was the first round in the newly virtual Mock Trial Competition. Ms De Leo reports that despite some technical issues, the team was extremely resilient and professional… leading to our first win! We were up against Regents Park Christian School, prosecuting their defendant for obstructing a railway line with a tree in the name of climate activism. The magistrate was a Supreme Court Registrar who shared some very encouraging affirmative feedback to the team – he was especially impressed with our two Barristers’ first ever attempt at cross examination.

 The team includes:

  • Josie Bannon – Barrister 1
  • Marcus Cooper-Hor – Barrister 2
  • Pippi Skidmore – Solicitor
  • Jack Keogh – Magistrates Clerk
  • Sophia Rolon – Witness 1
  • Annie Zhang – Witness 2

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Balmoral Swim Schools Relay Challenge on Sunday 2 April. Despite the less-than-ideal swimming conditions due to the rain, our junior, intermediate, and senior teams demonstrated incredible dedication by completing the ocean swim relay. The Schools Relay Challenge is a community-based initiative that aims to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, raise awareness of this important cause, and most importantly, have fun participating in an open water swim relay. A special shoutout to Ms Comino, who braved the rain and came down to support the swimmers from her Tutor group. Once again, congratulations to all our participants for their outstanding efforts and for embodying the Redlands spirit.

On Monday evening we were delighted with the talent and performative brilliance of students in Battle of the Bands. The overall winners were Year 12 students Elke Mueller and Jack Lazzarotto. Division One Band winners were Alex Bush, Lucas Law, Konrad Blankenstein, Isabella Solgaard and Lila Soste in their band called Rise of the Masses. Division One Unplugged winner was Grace Walker-Barker who performed an original song about climate change. Division Two winners were Aneke Golowenko, Emma Morris, Max Byron, Jasper Houchell, Daniel Koppers and Millie Winton in their band called Spirit of Conrad. The Division Two Unplugged winners were Oliver Cooke and Daniel Koppers. Division Three winners were William Andrew, Kabir Yohannan, Harry Fenton, Chris Szeto and Patrick Taylor in their band Ant Colony. Division Three Unplugged winners were Elke Mueller and Jack Lazzarotto. Elke performed an original song and Jack supported on keyboard. The students were once again well supported by our incredible Music Department and gained some useful and affirming feedback from the adjudicator.

The final day of Term 1 was a time of celebration, relief and reflection. It has been a long term and the students have demonstrated resilience and commitment in their studies, sporting pursuits and cocurricular activities. Highlights for me have been the thoughtful and mature insights offered by students from across all Year Groups, and their constant care and kindness for each other. The students attended the final Term Assembly today where we explored the value of Easter and the importance of kindness and humility, especially when faced with hostility or conflict. A range of students from across the School participated in the assemblies. They sang, prayed, reflected and offered thanks. They celebrated themselves and each other and should all be proud of their personal and academic growth this term.

Chaplain

He first loved us; in other words, even before we could spell the word “LOVE” and know how to love, God first loved us – 1 John 4:19

During this Easter season, as a community we have reflected on the significance of the Easter events and of the example of humility and love given by Jesus.

Across the School we have celebrated the key themes of the Christian message in a variety of ways. In the Prep and Junior Schools we enjoyed a lively puppet show from the green ‘Grunch’ and in the Secondary School we enjoyed a Palm Sunday themed Chapel and an Assembly reflection on the humility and servant leadership of Jesus.

It is our prayer that during the Easter break, there is opportunity for reflection on the demonstration of God’s love for us in the death and resurrection of His Son and the transforming power of this message.

We wish you and your families a very reflective and blessed time this Easter. May you be filled with peace and hope and find opportunities to experience compassion and the grace of God.

Easter Blessings to all.

Year 12

Parent Resource: Surviving Final Year

With the upcoming Yr 12 HSC and IB Assessments in Weeks 1 and 2 of next term, the below article gives parents some strategies to manage student wellbeing during this period when heightened assessment and exam stress can be more noticeable for students.

“Students in their final year are considered a high-risk group for depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation, diet and social media are some of the biggest issues faced by this group of teens.” – Dr Michael Carr-Gregg.

Overview

Every year, the media exposes us to the hype and pressure relating to the final year of Secondary School. However, putting things into perspective for students and parents alike can help prevent everyone from getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it will not be the most important year of your child’s life. It is crucial for parents to reinforce the mantra of ‘you are more than your ATAR’.

A student’s performance in the final year is only a point in time measured by their ability to sit an exam. If the desired ATAR or NCEA score is not achieved at the end of the day, there are other options available to your child. It will not define their happiness. There will be many other pathways available to them to help them reach their goals.

Resources

The following link is from School.TV, contains video resources to do with the following topics:

  • What does the research tell us about students in their final year?
  • What important messages should parents give their child on their final year at school?
  • Why is sleep so important as part of a Year 12 student’s final year.
  • Can diet impact a student’s performance in Year 12?
  • What advice do you give to students who are stressed?

Happy Easter and Term 1 Wrap-Up

It has been a massive term and there has been a significant rise in expectations, workload, commitments and engagement from students. While many students are feeling excited at times, overwhelmed at times and a bit anxious about what the HSC or IB programs are all about, these are natural feelings and they are at an age where they can and will be successful with their choices and their studies. I have asked Yr 11 to lean in to the supports that are around them and to fully embrace the opportunities presented to them, whether they are meeting with Mr Taylor or Mrs Benjamin about their programs and study timetable, reflecting on their growth with their Tutors or Year Advisors or whether they are speaking with a teacher about a class concern or opportunity for learning. Their teachers are a wealth of knowledge and support and this is the time they are learning to be independent, to utilise those supports around them and to make appropriate decisions throughout each day that helps and supports their own goals.

Yr 11 have done a fantastic job figuring out what works well for them this term and I look forward to continuing this conversation into Term 2.  Thank you to our incredible Yr 11 Tutor team for their ongoing conversations and guidance for their respective students: Rosanna Peterson, Igor Srbinovski, Kim Novokmet, Michael Andreatta, Wendy Duckworth, Elizabeth Cleghorn, Charlotte Berkeley, Genevieve Comino and Rachel Everingham. Thank you to Mrs Katharine Boase who is consistently supporting and motivating this cohort to reach their full potential.

Additionally, thank you, our parents, for your communication, understanding and support as students have settled into this new year. While we aim to keep students in charge of their own learning and in the driver’s seat – quite literally these days – they do have many people around them to assist throughout the process.

Have a restful and rejuvenating April break and a Happy Easter!

Parent Teacher Night

Thank you to all parents and students for their involvement and engagement in the parent-teacher interviews last night. This is an important opportunity for students to be involved in these interviews and to be the focus of the conversation. These meetings are about them and for them to reflect on their strengths, their accomplishments and further areas for growth as they move throughout these next two years.

Students need to be in these meetings as they are the ones who manage their decisions and actions each day to continue growing and improving. Thank you for your support in reinforcing this expectation and also thanking your children for embracing the process and support.

Student Sport Acknowledgements

The Beach Touch Football Competition took place Friday 31 March. For those unfamiliar with the sport, Beach Touch Football (a lot like Beach Volleyball) is a modified, fun, sand version of Touch Football, played on a smaller field. Beach Touch is fast and furious. The matches are played with 4 attackers against 3 defenders with fast subbing occurring at the 4th Touch as possession is turned over. This makes the game about all-out attack, but with unlimited substitutions to keep the legs fresh and the game flowing. Well done to those Yr 11 students who participated in this event: Indi Hindmarsh, Clara Wall, Thomas Reeves, Maximilian Stepniak, Alfie Leach, Jessica Van Extel, Daniel Lev, Tristan Wong, Chloe Moore, Hannah Garde, Chloe Jennings, Emma Noes, Sarah McLaren and Ruby Voyce.

Congratulations to all students who were invited to the CIS Cup for Football on 28 March; this is a huge accomplishment. Well done to Liam McFarlane and Anderson Boris!

Congratulations to Daisy Thomas who is currently competing overseas in skiing. She recently won the World Rookie Tour Free Ski Finals at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. We look forward to hearing further updates as she completes her three weeks abroad.

A group of Yr 11 students participate in Volleyball outside of school and have made it to the Manly Warringah Division 2 Volleyball Finals. They finished the top of their league and earned a Silver Medal. Congratulations to Will Andrew, Freddie Yates, Thomas Sigaloff, Flynn Kieren, River Stefanovic and  Redlander Oliver Sigaloff!

A Message from Yr 11 – As some of you may know Forbes is a small town in NSW, neighbouring Lismore, which went through dire levels of flooding last year. They have slowly been recovering from flood levels reaching a 70 year record!! The environment is devastated and the community is still in desperate need of some assistance from those who can help.

We are setting up a drive for the last week of school and continuing into next term, so please bring in anything you can manage and it will go a long way!!

Items to include could be:

  • seedlings
  • canned goods
  • non-perishable foods
  • notebooks and school supplies
  • cutlery, utensils, frypans, cutting boards, bowls
  • financial aid
  • first aid kits
  • clothing
  • sewing items
  • tools (old hammers)

Redlands recently took part in the Balmoral Swim Schools Relay Challenge, which aimed to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute and spread awareness about this important cause. The event, held on 2 April from 8am to 9am, involved an open water swim relay where each team comprised of four swimmers. Each participant swam a 200m leg of the relay and could compete in their own school year category or an older category. Despite adverse weather conditions, the Year 10 students showed great determination and teamwork, and we applaud them for their efforts. This community-based initiative is a fantastic opportunity for schools to come together, have fun, and make a meaningful contribution towards fighting childhood cancer.

‘Last Sunday, 8 students from Yr 10 participated in the highly anticipated Balmoral Swim for Cancer at Balmoral Beach. Two teams of 4 participated in the Relay challenge, where they had to swim a total of 800m in 200m increments finishing with a 75m beach run. Despite the torrential rain and high winds, our Year 10 teams were in high spirits, prior to their race, and braved the conditions to go to the water’s edge to support our Year 7 team, who were swimming for the first time. The swim itself was challenging, as a result of the weather conditions and uncharacteristically rough waves at Balmoral Beach, however, the unwavering support and encouragement from our teammates and fellow students from other years and participating schools undoubtedly made the experience more enjoyable and rewarding. This swim was an unforgettable and exciting experience for a worthwhile cause and we all appreciated that we have the opportunity and ability to support cancer research, in such a fun and memorable way.’

Easter Egg Hunt

Thank you so much for your generous donations for the Year 10 Easter egg hunt. The excitement in Redlands Hall was extraordinary as students frantically searched for eggs.

As we approach the Easter break, we encourage you to take the time to rest, relax, and enjoy quality time with your loved ones. Whether it’s a family vacation or a quiet staycation, I hope this Easter break brings you the opportunity to recharge your batteries and come back refreshed and ready for the rest of the school year.

We would also like to share some thoughts on preparing for the new term ahead. As such, I encourage you to use this Easter break as a time to start preparing for the new term.

Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Review progress: Take some time to review your child’s academic progress from the past term. Celebrate their achievements and identify areas that need improvement. Work with your child to come up with strategies for addressing any challenges they might face.
  • Set goals: Sit down with your child and discuss their academic goals for the next term. Encourage them to set specific and realistic targets and help them come up with a plan to achieve them.
  • Plan for extracurricular activities: Discuss with your child any extracurricular activities they might want to pursue in the next term. Plan ahead and make arrangements for any necessary equipment or transportation.
  • Set a schedule: In the second half of the break, encourage your child to start waking up and going to bed at regular times to help them readjust to school routines.

We want to ensure that your child starts the new term on the right foot. As always, we are committed to providing the best possible learning experience for your child. We look forward to working together to make the upcoming term a success.

Happy Easter break!

Arnhem Land Pre-Learning Sessions

In Week 9 and 10, Yr 9 students engaged in two Arnhem Land Pre-Learning sessions. The first was a student led forum – students from Yr 10 who journeyed to Arnhem Land in October 2022 shared the powerful impact this camp had on them as individuals. They answered questions about the nature of the camp; the activities, approaching cultural sensitivities and connecting with the land.

On Wednesday of Week 10, Yr 9 students had their first Arnhem Land Pre-Learning sessions led by Troy, the Operations Manager of Culture College. These sessions were a more formal conversation about the purpose of ‘Acknowledging Country’, the structure of the activities in Arnhem Land and how to approach the sensitivities of an Indigenous cultural immersion.

The feedback from Yr 9 has been wonderful – they are clearly ready to experiences the challenges of this powerful and immersive trip to Arnhem Land in May.

Medical Form and Medications Year 9 Arnhem Land

If you have not done so already, please complete the Health and Wellbeing Form in preparation for Arnhem Land – click HERE

If your child/ren requires medication (Prescribed or OTC) on camp, you will need to complete and return to Mr Atkins, a Medical Authority Form located on Pulse HERE.

This form will need to be returned to Mr Atkins by Friday 19 May. Students should not be arriving to camp without a completed MAF if they require medication.

Outstanding Student Achievement

This week, Yr 9 student Dante Minassian is representing Redlands and Australia at the Youth American Grand Prix finals! YAGP is the biggest international ballet competition, and Dante is one of 53 boys in the junior male category. Dante is an exceptional dancer – to compete at the YAGP is an amazing opportunity and so well deserved. For the competition, Dante performed a contemporary piece and classical solo. His classical solo is James’ variation from La Sylphide.

Dante has also been awarded the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy ‘Student of the Month’ award for April in the Year 9-10 category. Well done Dante on these phenomenal achievements!

End of Term Thoughts

As we approach the Easter break, we encourage you to take the time to rest, relax, and enjoy quality time with your loved ones. Whether it’s a family vacation or a quiet staycation, I hope this Easter break brings you the opportunity to recharge your batteries and come back refreshed and ready for the rest of the school year.

As the term draws to an end, I would like to share some thoughts on preparing for the new term ahead. Please use the Easter holiday break as a time to disconnect from technology as a family, and to reconnect with friends and family face-to-face.

Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Review progress: Take some time to review your child’s academic progress from the past term. Celebrate their achievements and identify areas that need improvement. Work with your child to come up with strategies for addressing any challenges they might face. Ask them what they are finding challenging, and what is exciting them about the term ahead.
  • Set goals: Sit down with your child and discuss their academic and social goals for the next term. Encourage them to set specific and realistic targets and help them come up with a plan to achieve them.
  • Plan for extracurricular activities: Discuss with your child any extracurricular activities they might want to pursue in the next term. Plan ahead and make arrangements for any necessary equipment or transportation. Consider why it is important for them to take part in a new co-curricular activity, and what this might offer them as a well-rounded young person.
  • Set a schedule: In the second half of the break, encourage your child to start waking up and going to bed at regular times to help them readjust to school routines.

As a Year 9 team, Mr Millham and I want to ensure that your child starts the new term with positivity and excitement. There is so much to look forward to in the term ahead. As always, we are committed to providing the best possible learning experience for your child. We look forward to working in tandem with parents and guardians to make Term 2 a success.

End of Term Reflection and Assembly

As we finish what has been an action-packed term, students attended an assembly today and were given time to reflect on all that had happened and how they had contributed positively to the School.

All speakers highlighted the plethora of sporting activities and school-based carnivals, many of which have been in Note Days throughout the term.

There was a large focus on accomplishments in the Arts – the Addams Family Musical and Monday nights’ Battle of the Bands (affectionately referred to as ‘BOB’) were wonderful displays of the dedication and commitment of Year 8 students at Redlands.

There were also strong messages from both our School Chaplain, Ms Kirsten Philips who reflected on everyday leadership that is humble and kind.  And from our Principal, Sean Corcoran on the importance of character in how you act when others (particularly authority figures) are not watching.

Battle of the Bands

Congratulations to all of the students in Yr 8 who performed in the Battle of the Bands on Monday night. It was a wonderful display of student confidence and talent as applied to classic Australian rock tracks.

Student performances included:

  • Harrison Cairns, Maria-Elena Hartleb, Zoe Potter and Maddie Dunnet performing Dance Monkey by Tones and I
  • Zoe McKeown, Isabella Solgaard, Ava Atkinson and Mia Cruttenden performing Thunderstruck by ACDC
  • Lukas Veryinis, Charlie Coppin, Fred Hart, James Morris and Maria-Elena Hartleb performing Chandelier by Sia
  • Alex Bush, Lucas Law, Isabella Solgaard, Konrad Blankenstein and Lila Soste performing Joker and the Thief by Wolfmother
  • Isabella Solgaard and Lucas Law performing Titanium by Sia
  • Max Taylor, Amelie Swann, Shriya Tandon, Will Raymond and Zach Griffith preforming Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil

Year 7

Week 10 – Hopping into a Happy Easter!

It has been a fast, busy and energetic first term in the Secondary School for our Yr 7 cohort and, with Easter just around the corner, everyone is excited for a well-earned holiday break!

We have learned a lot about how to operate in the Secondary School this term, and the upcoming holidays will provide a great opportunity for students to recharge and to reflect on their successes and shortfalls this term, ready to come back and ‘let their light shine’ in Term 2!

Last week, in our Year assembly and in our Peer Support session, we began this process of reflecting on what we have done this term to establish good habits and routines, and how we might harness this and maintain our success into Term 2 and across the year ahead.

Our Peer Support session last Friday saw our wonderful Year 11 leaders engaging Year 7 in thoughtful consideration of how they might best use their holiday time to gain important rest and also space to enjoy time with friends and family. While a top response amongst students for what that they were most looking forward to was ‘sleep’ during the holidays (welcome to the busy world of Redlands!), many also identified ‘hanging out with mates’, ‘going shopping’, ‘TV’ and simply ‘chilling’ as important plans for their upcoming break. I’m sure whatever they do, we will see Year 7 energised and ready to tackle Term 2 when they return!

Last week, I asked for students to volunteer to write reflections on their first term at Redlands, and quite a number took me up on the challenge of submitting a brief reflection. It was wonderful to read their perspectives on the great moments they have shared. I have copied a few choice extracts below, and you can read all of their individual reflections on Redlands Pulse via the link below the Reflections.

Extracts from Year 7 Term 1 Reflections

I really enjoyed being part of the School Musical, The Addams Family; I made so many friends when I was doing the show. The show was crazy and fun at the same time. Gomez’s line resonated with me when we were doing the show: “It’s family first and family last.” The Addams Family cast has been my family away from my actual family.

Leo Campbell

The sun appeared and the thin air brushed my face. I sat above grass beds, home to wilderness. Rocks caped in moss, reflections beamed off lakes and mountains towered over us. My steps added to the echoes, as triumphantly ventured our way to the top. There it was. Mountains and mountains, pinching myself in the moment.

Seren Guha

Looking back on the first day of school I can’t believe how far we have come. Ten whole weeks have passed so quickly. With the raging waves of Term 1 behind us, the rest of the year looks like smooth sailing.

Lachlan Carter

My favourite memory was when we were at camp. It was late at night, and I was looking up into the stars when a shooting star went past. It was cold and it was completely quiet. It reminded me how lucky I was to be able to do that, something you wouldn’t be able to do back in Sydney.

-Lily Musgrave-Kresa

My favourite part of this term must be Camp. It has given me a chance to get to know friends that I am certain will be my friends for a lifetime.

Clem Leroux

Two months and seven days later and the anxiety and nervous feelings have all disappeared. So many new connections and memories have been formed.

Ruby Entwistle

At the Swimming Carnival, it was Issy and Laura who encouraged me to participate in events. I wasn’t confident in swimming, but here I am, trying things I would never dare to do before. At the Swimming Carnival, I also met Laura’s friend Clemy. Now I’m also friends with her. Making friends wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

-Charlie Lee

When I walked into PDHPE on Friday, there was only one seat left and it was next to a tall girl with black hair. Little did I know she was going to be one of my best friends for the rest of the term. Once I met her, I met her other friends Issy and Charlie at the Swimming Carnival, and now I hang out with them every single lunch time.

Clem Roumanoff

I was looking around to see who looked like a good friend, then I saw a short, black-haired girl sitting in the table across from me, and I remembered that I talked to her once on Orientation Day. Suddenly I was eager to make friends with her. When it ended, I went up to her and said hello. The best decision of my life. After that the rest of the day was amazing.

Isabelle Mansfield

I feel like the two biggest essentials are friends and focus to help you through Year 7. Friends because they, as well as teachers, are your biggest supporters. All my friends have supported me and helped me grow a lot. The teachers have also helped me a lot this term, with questions, queries and managing emotions.

Find more student reflection in Pulse.

This week, we spent time in Tutor discussing locker storage spaces with students how they should be packing their lockers. Many have found it challenging to organise these spaces appropriately – some becoming quite a mess! – so we talked through ways they might create a better space here, and one which fits their school resources AND their school bag. Thank you to those students who let me take photos of their lockers to offer as examples!! Let’s make sure we are keeping our spaces clean, neat and organised for Term 2.

On Wednesday, we also faced the dreaded spectre of needles and vaccinations – and it was a great success! The School, combined with NSW Health, provides an excellent opportunity for students to be vaccinated at school, so they can be protected from various health conditions. Yesterday, students were vaccinated against HPV, protecting them from nine types of cancer that can occur as they mature. Students were extremely well-behaved and respectful as they moved through the vaccination process.

Yes, there were some tears and moments of panic and stress, but it was wonderful seeing friends helping to calm down their mates and guide them past their fears of needles. And at the end, everyone was pleased to have made it through and received their vaccination.

Thank you to all the immunisation nurses who attended to make this happen, and Mrs Kells who organised all the schedules.

For those who were unable to be vaccinated on the day, there will be an opportunity for make-up vaccinations in Term 2 on Thursday, 25 May.

Meanwhile, around the school we have continued to have many things happening in the cocurricular space. A HUGE congratulations goes out to Phoebe Sun who last week was awarded the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy ‘Student of the Month’ award for April in the Year 7-8 category. Recently, Phoebe made her Redlands performance debut in The Addams Family Musical. Phoebe attended every rehearsal with a smile on her face, and remembered all her choreography. She was definitely an important member of the Dance ensemble, which is impressive considering she was the only Year 7 student selected for this group. Well done, and we can’t wait to see what Phoebe does in her future with Redlands!

Some of our Year 7s have recently got really involved in the school newspaper club, The Irregular. As with all co-curricular clubs, The Irregular provides students with an opportunity to engage in something they are passionate about, in this case, writing! In this club, students can write about school issues, review school productions, or even compose puzzles and buzzfeed-esque quizzes. These then get published through The Irregular’s page on Pulse. It is a great place for students to be creative and critical, and a nice place to meet like-minded peers who share the same interests.

And now let’s jump back in time! In Week 8, students were engaged in Science Explorations, learning about the lab and how to use key Science equipment appropriately. This term has been a great introduction to students for understanding appropriate lab processes and procedures, and they are all looking far more confident in the lab (and very professional in their lab aprons!). 7P got right into this in Week 8, building their skills and confidence in the Science lab space.

Finally, after a fun and exciting (and busy!) term, Mrs Adams and I want to wish everyone a restful and enjoyable break. We hope you find time to connect with friends and family, have some fun (responsibly!), and are recharged and ready to start it all over again in Term 2.

We wish you a restful, relaxing and happy Easter!!

Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Term 2 Commences: Wednesday 26 April

Head of Junior School

It has been wonderful to have enjoyed the regular rhythm of a disruption-free Term 1 again, such an important starting point for our students in a new school year. I know from talking to staff and some parents that we have seen challenge in learning, growth and progress amongst students in a range of different areas across school life. Time for reflection over the break is also important and I encourage you to talk to your child about what it is they have felt most proud of this term or maybe what has challenged them.

A hallmark of any good school is its busyness, and no one could ever say that Redlands does not meet this measure. Therefore, it is even more important for students and teachers to rest in the breaks, and I encourage staff and families to step away from school and find things to do together that bring you happiness.

As we end the term today, I also acknowledge and thank our Redlands staff, students and families for the various roles played in supporting our school community. I wish everyone a restful break and safe travels, where taken, and we look forward to welcoming the students back for Term 2 on Wednesday 26 April.

Please note that students should be in Winter Uniform for Terms 2 and 3, which includes blazers, except on Wednesdays when we have Sport and on their class’ PE day.

International Day

On Tuesday, our Junior Campus was awash with energy and vibrant colour as we celebrated our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day event. It was particularly joyful to have so many parents give up their time to share their cultural backgrounds and experiences, which is always a highlight and added significantly to the richness of the day. Thank you to the many parents involved in celebrating and acknowledging our rich community diversity.

Mrs Benneyworth

As some parents may have noted, at very late notice, Mrs Benneyworth did not return at the start of Term 1.

With her approval, I am able to now share that during the summer break, Mrs Benneyworth was diagnosed with multiple myeloma which is a blood cancer. She has started treatment which she reports is going well and we have remained in contact with her, offering support where we can.

I have deliberately not spoken to the students about Mrs Benneyworth as I know these types of matters can trigger different emotions for different students and can be hard for young students to process. However, if your child has been taught by Mrs Benneyworth and/or if you feel that you would like to share this with your child, the holiday period may be a good opportunity to do so.

I know you will join me in keeping Jo in your thoughts and prayers and we will keep our community updated, as appropriate.

Easter Service

In Ms McKenzie’s recent absence, I am grateful to our Secondary School Chaplain, Mrs Philips and to Ms Michaels for leading our engaging Easter Service this week. I also acknowledge their support of our weekly Chapel services and thank them.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Ms Ciara Harding, who was married last weekend. We wish her and her husband, Sean, a lifetime of happiness together.

Reminder: Medications on Year 6 Camp

Preparations are at the final stages for our Yr 6 Camp and if your child requires medication (prescribed or OTC) on camp, you will need to complete and return a Medical Authority Form (MAF) located on Pulse HERE to Mr Atkins (Head of Outdoor Education) via email at eatkins@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

This form will need to be returned to Mr Atkins by Friday 24 April. Students should not be arriving to camp without a completed MAF if they require medication. Please contact Mr Atkins for any other questions.

Term Dates 2023 and 2024

Notwithstanding the occasional important family circumstances that necessitate leave of absence during term, please can I ask families to carefully review our term dates for the rest of 2023 and 2024 ahead of booking future holidays. I share the concern of some teachers as we have seen a gradual increase in students miss important learning time due to term time holidays.

Please be reminded that the start of Term 2 is Wednesday 26 April and for your reference and planning of future holidays, please find the term dates for the rest of 2022 and 2023.

Happy Easter

I wish all our Redlands House and Prep families a happy Easter and a restful break. I am so grateful for this term and all it has produced and provided us as a community of educators and learners. From the first day of school smiles to the joy that International Day brought us this week, the centre has always been the child. I am so proud of our community as we work together in and through any situation to ensure that our students are our number one priority. At times this can be a tricky road to navigate, especially when there have been friendship issues or when perspective is at times hard to find, but every conversation or action taken is always about what is best for the children in our care. Thank you to all our families and carers who are on this journey with us.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parent volunteers who have come into classrooms this term to help with various activities. It has been incredibly helpful, and the staff are so grateful for your time and enthusiasm. Thank you.

If you would like to volunteer to spend time in the classroom, please email your teacher directly.

Term 2 commences on Wednesday 26 April. Students are to return to school wearing their winter uniform. Please refer to the Student Diary for the winter uniform requirements. Can I please stress that every piece of clothing and property is labelled for a quick return.

I encourage all families to please take a moment to look at the Pulse calendar to familiarise yourselves with key dates for Term 2. We have some interesting talks and workshops next term, and it would be a shame to miss out.

International Day

The spotlight shone brightly on Redlands Prep on Tuesday as we celebrated and explored the cultural diversity that exists at Redlands. International Day began with a Bollywood concert where Mr Corcoran and Ms Partington showcased their dance skills along with staff. This set a positive tone for our students as they moved into rotating art and craft activities from the USA, Latin America, India, European and Asia. Our students were so lucky to learn and experience so many different things on Tuesday. Learning about other countries and participating in different cultural activities was an incredible opportunity for them to appreciate the diversity of cultures and respect all our differences.

The fun didn’t stop there. At lunchtime we were treated to a huge choice of delicious food made by our families. I was so thrilled to watch our students having a go and trying new things and enjoying the taste of new foods.

We were thrilled by the excitement of the Brazilian dance group and the graceful beauty of the Chinese dancers to finish our day.

Thank you does not seem enough to say to all our families who helped plan and contribute to the success of the day. By having so many of you involved provided the opportunity for a truly authentic experience for our children. How grateful we all are that we can come together and celebrate diversity in a respectful way. To thank you all, we would like to invite all the helpers to a Prep Thank You Assembly on Tuesday 2 May at 2pm. More information will follow but please save the date!

Yr 2  Strings Concert

A message from Ms Moses, Head of Junior Campus Music

Year 2 Strings students impressed their parents and guests in our open lessons on Monday. Showing off tunes like The DAD Song, Rock on A and Jig, beginner students were able to share their new skills on violin and cello, whilst the Rainbow Strings performed a number of pieces as a small Chamber Group. A big shout out to all our Strings tutors who have harnessed the wonderful energy and enthusiasm of our learners, and we look forward to seeing our students grow as musicians.

Junior School Coaching Staff

We would like the Redlands community to join us in wishing one of our coaches the best of luck as she prepares to commence her 2023 AFL Season shortly. Our students know Montana as one of their coaches, she coached our Year 5/6 Basketball C and D teams in Term 1, our Girls AFL side this season as well as our Year 3 and 4 Netball teams in their upcoming season. For those of you who do not know Montana Ham, was the number one draft pick in the 2022 draft and nominated New South Wales in the state-based draft. Montana started playing football when she was just four years old and has played in four NAB League campaigns, being named best on ground in Vic Metro’s championship this season. She was also judged MVP for the National AFLW Academy side in their game against the U23 All-Stars. Coach Scott Gowans said: “Montana is an elite talent. She is a 180cm midfielder who can play forward as well. She loves contested footy, has clean hands and a strong work ethic. We will play Montana in various roles to suit the team’s needs. Fans can also expect to see her spend some time across the half-back line.

For those of you whose child is coached by Montana you may wish to show them this ‘day in the life of’ clip. There will be an opportunity for Redlands students to watch her play at North Sydney Oval this season.

Saturday Sport Fixtures

IPSHA (Round 1) for Winter Representative Sports will begin on Saturday 29 April. The fixtures (draw) for Term 2 can be found in the quick links section on Pulse and through the Redlands App under your child’s activities. Please note students are required to meet their coach for warm up 30 mins prior to the listed time. There may be occasions where host schools change a time or location midweek and when this occurs the draw will be updated and you will receive an automatic notification from the Redlands App, same process will take place for Wet Weather.

For Rugby families whose child is playing 7s Rugby, your fixtures are released by IPSHA (Sporting Association that we belong too) on Thursday each week so your times and opposition will remain blank until then.

Fencing

One of our resident fencers experienced more success on the weekend competing in the Sydney Olympic Cup up in the Under 14s age group. Claire Liang (Yr 5) won Bronze at this competition. The previous week Claire won two Silver medals for Redlands in the Roberta Nutt Shield competition on Saturday (in the U11 & U13 age groups), as well as a Bronze medal in the Sydney Olympic Cup (U12 age group) on Sunday. Well done Claire and we wish her luck for her remaining competitions.

Class Watching – Junior Ballet Performers

What a wonderful term we have had at the Academy, finishing off with two weeks of Class Watching where students had the opportunity to show off all the hard work and dedication that has gone into their training. Thank you to all our parents and extended family and friends, for taking time out of your days to support your children, their teachers and the Academy. It was particularly special to see the senior students spreading their wings in Redlands Hall on Saturday 1 April when they presented snapshots of all genres from Character to Hip Hop, Tap, Jazz and Ballet through-out the day.

In conversation with our Dance faculty, we have all agreed that on the whole attendance is up, students are focused, and are beginning to see the benefits of being well-groomed and prepared for classes.

Term 2 Hair Etiquette for Dance

We have been very impressed and delighted to see so many of our younger dancers coming to class with their hair in a bun, ready for dance.

With this in mind, from Term 2 it would be greatly appreciated if all students could arrive at school with their hair already in buns. Staff will of course be on hand to tidy up any wispy bits before class.

All students also need to bring their own hair kits to class each week, as the Academy will no longer be providing hair accessories.

From Year 4 students will be encouraged to do their own hair.

Please stock up on pins and nets over the holidays and try to spend some time practicing how to perfect your buns. Teachers will be rewarding students for neat hair.

Dance Competitions

Chookas to Imogen Jeffery-Bilich who is competing at the Alana Haines Australasian Awards in Wellington, New Zealand this week. We are all looking forward to hearing all about it!

These student performances were full of energy, finesse and show stopping songs that had the audience singing along. We even had a last minute entry from the staff showing off their skills as well. Congratulations and thanks to all participants for sharing your wonderful talents with us!  We look forward to sharing the photos with our community next term.

We look forward to supporting all our senior students towards maximising their HSC/IB outcomes later this year, and ultimately towards life and industry readiness as music-makers.

Spotlight on… Junior Training Band!

We are excited to announce the next intake period for the Redlands Training Band! This program is designed for Junior School students (Yrs 3-6) who are interested in taking their musical skills to the next level, and are keen to develop their skills on their instruments.

Junior Training Band rehearsals take place on Tuesday mornings 7:15-8:15am, providing students with the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive and collaborative environment. In this program, students will receive small group support and guidance in learning the Junior Concert Band repertoire ahead of their enrolment. This will give them a head start and boost their confidence when they progress to the Concert Band.

Register now for the start of Term 2 by completing the Cocurricular Enrolment Form on Pulse. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity for your child to take their musical journey to the next level!

Yr 8 Curriculum Music Excursion

On Thursday evening we had the pleasure of taking forty Yr 8 Students to the Opera House to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform with the Philharmonia Choirs and soloists. In supporting our understanding of the Western Music History timeline (which we will explore further in Term 2), students were treated to sublime Baroque and Contemporary works by JS Bach and Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds respectively.  Several students reported that they were deeply moved by what they experienced and they led the crowd in a standing ovation! It was an especial treat to see our Redlands tutor, Chloe Lankshear radiant and mellifluous as featured soprano soloist.
