Music

For the love of Music!

The great music keeps coming! After last week’s magnificent Yr 4 & 5 MIP concert, Monday’s K-6 String celebration was everything it promised to be. From our Yr 2 students performing with such pride and poise, to our Prep and Junior School String and Chamber ensembles, the rich value of the Redlands String learning journey was on glorious display. We could not be prouder of all our performers and once again thank all our staff who work tirelessly to afford our students these opportunities.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Andy Kent who has served our school community and Strings Program in various capacities for the past 12 years. This week’s String Concert sadly marks her last with us at Redlands. Her warmth and collegiality and work with the Cellists in both MIP & Yr 2 Strings as well as in private tuition has been so greatly appreciated. We wish her all the best with her pending sea change for 2023.

Please read on to hear about all the exciting happenings in our Curricular, Cocurricular and Extracurricular spaces across both campuses this week!

MIP Concert

Rave reviews have been flowing in for our MIP students who performed in our annual concert last week. Performing in both small and large (80+!) ensembles, students demonstrated their impressive skills learnt from the MIP program. With momentum strong, now is a great time to enrol in private lessons should you wish to boost your child’s instrumental learning.

Yr 2 Strings

Yr 2 Strings were very excited to be performing in the K-6 Strings on Monday. Featuring songs such as Josh’s Jig and Sea Shells, students performed beautifully and demonstrated their learning with confidence. For photos, please scroll down to the Strings Section!

Yr 12 Excursion

Yr 12 HSC Music 2 and IB Music students were treated to a rare performance of one of their set works of study at the Opera House on Friday night. Experiencing the new Opera House in all its acoustic glory, the collaborative work Compassion by Lior & Nigel Westlake (in addition to a range of other popular and spiritual songs arranged for both contemporary band and symphony orchestra) provided wonderful inspiration and stimulus ideas for these students as they launch into their HSC and IB Compositional projects for the year ahead. Of particular interest was the frequent intersection of styles and cultures and the unique approach to instrumentation. An enriching evening for all in attendance.

Project Based Learning Yrs 8-10

With formal assessments now all wrapped up for our elective music students, each year has taken the reins of their learning by embarking on student-led projects. Yr 8 are going to ‘mash’ Music with any other subject of their choosing (starting with Maths & Music – exploring the link between Chance and Aleatory); Yr 9 are creating and underscoring their own short Australian Films and Yr 10 will be launching their own Passion Projects when they return from camp next week.

Yr 7 World Trip! (Kind of).

Brilliant sounds have been emanating from our Yr 7 Music classrooms as we have been looking at Music from around the world. There have been compositions for the Japanese Koto, Djembe Drum Circles with many other countries on the musical itinerary for exploration in the weeks ahead.

Ensemble Performances in Term 4

We congratulate our Band and Ensemble students for their dedicated efforts in preparing for their upcoming Term 4 performances. Strings Concert Success

Our strings students across K-6 featured in our annual Strings Concert this week and performed to a sell-out crowd! Congratulations Prep Strings, Junior Strings, Year 2 Strings and the Junior Chamber Ensembles who all demonstrated poise and professionalism in their performances, dazzling the audience with a variety of repertoire. We look forward to seeing these students continue to grow as musicians and if you would like your child to enrol in a String ensemble for 2023 now is a great time to get the ball rolling by exploring options on Pulse.

Performance and Enrichment

Musgrove Opera Incursion K – 5

Today we welcomed Musgrove Opera to Redlands for Yrs K – 5 Incursion. The students thoroughly enjoyed watching the new Australian opera Max & Moritz by Aija Draguns which told the story of two children and seven daring pranks! The students enjoyed learning about opera and all the mischief the characters got up to!
