Issue 34 2022 Term 4 Week 5 - 10 Nov 2022

From The Principal

A highlight of this week has been the various orientation days on Junior and Senior Campus for our 2023 students, along with the opportunity to welcome parents to the School. The energy in the room was palpable at the Yr 7 Orientation Day and I appreciated hearing the valuable advice shared by our current Yr 7 students along with our School Captains. The strong message throughout was to embrace our school motto of ‘Let Your Light Shine’ and to be confident to be yourself and to embrace all of the opportunities available to you at Redlands.

Another highlight was the K-6 Strings Concert, which enabled the students to perform in front of their parents, proudly demonstrating their musical progress throughout the year. Having all of the Yr 2 students perform together was a special moment and I am always amazed at how our Music staff manage to coordinate the students to perform together at such a young age.

This week also marked the completion of examination period for our Yr 12 2022 students, with the last IB examination being held on Wednesday. My sincere thanks to our dedicated team of Yr 12 teachers for all of their incredible support of the students, along with a special mention to our Deans of HSC and IB, Lucy Benjamin and Darren Taylor, for their constant commitment to and encouragement to each individual student. We wish the students an enjoyable period of relaxation and look forward to celebrating their achievements later in December and early in January when the HSC and IB results are respectively released.

It has been a busy period for our Yr 10 students with the Harbour Cruise on Friday evening and the Myall Lakes camp this week. We look forward to welcoming them back to campus next week and trust that they will be looking ahead to their senior years with anticipation.

Further to the nominations for HSC Showcases in Dance, Drama and Textiles and Design, I congratulate Jake McLeod on his nomination for ARTEXPRESS, the HSC Showcase for exceptional works in Visual Arts.

Redlands is hosting the ISA end of year meetings and dinner this year and as part of the experience, we have organised for the ISA Heads of Sport and Principals to be offered the opportunity to enjoy a sailing afternoon at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Our partnership with the RSYS in running our sailing program is of great benefit to our students and we appreciate the additional opportunities provided to our community through this strong connection.

On Saturday, we are holding the Redlands Sailing Cup at RSYS. This event will see over 80 sailors from six Sydney schools competing on the waters of Sydney Harbour. All the very best to our sailors in their first interschools event of the year.

Community Update

With final IB assessments wrapped up and HSC exams completed last week, the Class of 2022 represents our 136th cohort of Year 12 students to sit their final exams at Redlands. The School’s first ever Year 12 student was Sophia Liggins, niece of one of our co-founders, Miss Elizabeth Liggins, and one of the first five students to attend on the School’s opening day of 14 July, 1884. Sophia was the only candidate at the School to take the HSC equivalent (then called the Senior University examination) in 1887, passing all her five subjects with flying colours. She went on to become a teacher and published writer.

Just over a century later, Stacy Hume followed in her footsteps when she became the first (and again solo) Redlands student to sit and be awarded the International Baccalaureate, having also completed the HSC in the previous year. Since leaving school, Stacy completed a Masters in Communication Management and has worked in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States across many sectors that include media and communications, government, politics and marketing.

It was a pleasure to welcome our Year 7 2023 cohort, parents and carers onto the Senior Campus earlier this week for an informative and fun day of getting to know both our School and their new teachers. There was plenty of excitement amongst our newest students as new connections and friendships were made. We look forward to welcoming them back as the Class of 2028 next year.

If you are looking to connect with our community groups then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our Class and Year Group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families and to enjoy a spotlight on an award winning Redlander, check out the Foundation section in today’s Note Day.

Each year, the North Sydney Community Awards provide the perfect opportunity to acknowledge local people who make a difference in our community and the North Sydney LGA. We are delighted to advise that nominations are now open and encourage our community to consider nominating a person or group who you believe deserve an accolade, for work often done behind the scenes. Award categories include Community Builder, Next generation, Eco Warrior, Trailblazer and Living Legend.

Nominations close on 10 December and further information on these awards can be found on the North Sydney Council website here.

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition that seeks to give students the opportunity to understand the Christian faith in a relevant and accessible way. The Redlands Parents’ Prayer Group provides our current parent community with the opportunity to come together in prayer. The Redlands Parent Prayer Group (convened by Sally Swan) is holding an End of Term Prayer Gathering on Wednesday 23 November from 6.30 to 7.30pm in the Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne. All parents are warmly invited to attend for a time of prayer and thanksgiving. The evening will provide the opportunity to join the new Secondary School Chaplain, Kirsten Philips, and our Principal, Stephen Webber we express gratitude for his faithful service at Redlands.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

This week, the Yr 7 Orientation took place on the Senior Campus and we welcomed just over 300 students and parents on campus. During the day, I reflected on how the campus has evolved enormously in the last two years. Now we have the Redlands Learning Hub and Fahl Garden for hosting these events and students can enjoy the transformational learning spaces which the Redlands Learning Hub provides.

It was wonderful to see how well students interacted and how well the spaces served this sort of gathering, encouraging communication and collaboration.

RPFA

Secondhand Book Sale

This year’s Secondary School used textbook sale will occur on Monday 5 December. Through this sale, the RPFA aims to reduce paper wastage for environmental benefit, keep the costs of textbooks down for families and donate disused texts to charitable organisations who distribute them to communities that will continue to benefit from them. Thank you for supporting these objectives by participating!

On Monday 5 Secondary School students are encouraged to bring in their used textbooks for donation and drop them off to volunteers at the Gerard St entrance. They can also submit an order form to buy second hand current edition textbooks for 2023 and collect their 2nd Hand 2023 Books from the Gerard St Entrance that same afternoon.

Students currently in Yr 6 can also purchase second hand textbooks for Year 7 2023 by handing in their order form at the Junior School Office the morning of Monday 5 December and collect their books that afternoon from the Junior School Office.

Current edition textbooks will be sold within the Redlands community. Previous editions no longer used at Redlands will be donated to other communities who will welcome and use them. To simplify the process, all used text books will be donated, similar to the second hand uniform sale process. The price for second hand textbooks that you purchase will be 50% of the Box of Books new price. The amount of your total purchases will be added to your school account next year.

Head of Secondary School

This week our 2022 Yr 12 students completed their final examinations. Expressions of relief were common and students have been taking the time to get used to not putting on their uniform each day, and having extended leisure time. Yr 10 have been away at Camp at Myall lakes, and our 2023 Yr 12 students have been settling into their leadership roles by guiding and role modelling for the student community.

Orientation Day

A warm welcome was provided to Yr 7 2023 students on Tuesday by the Secondary School. Students enjoyed the opportunity to explore life on the Senior Campus.

This was our first in-person Orientation Day since 2019 and it took a collaborative team effort to make the day a success.

  • 2023 Yr 7 Tutors and staff graciously stepped in to perform the role of Tutor
  • Key Pastoral Staff including Year Advisors Jimmy Tod-Hill and Jess Adams, Chaplain Kirsten Philips and the Heads of House
  • The Enrolments Team and who offered a warm welcome to parents and students
  • Our stellar administration staff, Susan Jones, Erika Yamamoto and Leanne Kells, who were instrumental in the organisation of the event
  • The Support and Operations teams including Ben Peate in AV, Joel and the Canteen team, Julie and Facilities
  • Stephen Webber, Marita Jansons and Anna Marie Rolon for their welcome to students and parents
  • The excellent demonstration lessons offered by teachers (sherbet making in Science was a student highlight!)
  • Our 40+ Yr 11 Peer Support Leaders, Peer Support Captains, Secondary School Captains, House Captains and Yr 7 2022 student representatives
  • Learning Plus, Yr 6 Teachers, our counselling teams and JS Dean of Students, Katie-Louise Clinton, for their Redlands transition guidance

Ms Jansons reports that nerves were put at ease through the warm welcome offered by the whole community. We look forward to our new Yr 7 students being back on campus and wearing their uniform with pride, in late January.

Yr 9 Service Learning Program

Throughout Term 3, Yr 9 students have actively engaged with researching and organising charity drives for local charities and service learning opportunities. Student efforts culminated in an offsite 1-day service learning program supporting their chosen charity. Travelling from Manly to Paddington, students engaged in environmental clean-ups, connected with the elderly, cooked meals for the homeless and connected with younger students.

The day concluded with Yr 9 writing Christmas letters to the residents of Bougainvillea, creating toiletries packs for the homeless, packing suitcases for foster children, folding clothes and packing food hampers. Witnessing Yr 9’s compassion and passion for this project was inspiring. Key charities supported include Dress for Success, Share the Dignity, Hope in a Suitcase and St Vincent de Paul. Yr 9 students were supported in their activities by Year Advisor Ms Lisa Vale and Assistant Year Advisor Ms Abigail Walker. Both staff members have contributed considerable time to ensuring the program engaged Yr 9 students and provided ample opportunities for leadership development in the service space.

Yr 11 Shine at the Yr 7 Orientation Day

Well done to all the Yr 11 students who assisted at the 2023 Yr 7 students with their Secondary School orientation on Tuesday. It was riveting to see the genuine interactions and connections between the Yr 11 and Yr 6 students throughout the day. No doubt, all of the cohort will be supportive mentors for next year’s Yr 7 cohort.

In the photos below, Summer Manning-Lees, Lachlan Binnekamp, Jack Forrest, Charlotte Scamps, Dan Close, Isabella Havryk and Sebastien Griffith did an exceptional job, leading the Technology Wearable Technology Activity where Yr 6 students had to brainstorm, sketch and generate ideas which lead to a prototype of an innovative wearable technology made from paper and plasticine.

Student Achievement

Well done to Ellie Trueman who competed at the NSW Hockey Championships last weekend, scoring four goals for her Northern Sydney and Beaches team.

Yr 12 Lunch Time Privileges

Ms Gemma Van de Peer spoke with all of Yr 11 on Wednesday regarding the Lunch Time Privileges which have been planned to be given to Yr 12 in Week 6. She emphasised the importance of stepping up as a senior student and being role models for Redlands when stepping out into the Cremorne neighbourhood. She also mentioned the importance of working together as a cohort to ensure the very positive aspects of  Redlands are maintained outside of school time.

Every Yr 11 student must bring in their priviledges permission form, which needs to be signed by a parent or guardian by today. If a student doesn’t bring in their permission note by today’s deadline, this will push the privileges back until Term 1, 2023.

Lismore Christmas Appeal

This term, we are calling on the generosity of our Redlands community to support the residents of Lismore. We are asking each student to donate a small Christmas gift to the Northern Rivers Children’s Services. We hope these donated gifts will bring joy to a number of families struggling this Christmas season. Yr11 are to bring in their donations by Monday 21 November.

Holidays

With the holidays not too far away, it is worth considering how the change in routine can affect our teens. Parents and carers will possibly be juggling work and caring commitments which often leaves teens with more than usual downtime. Some children are not good at reaching out to peers for social connection and can find themselves online watching a plethora of content. This loss in routine, can affect student wellbeing. Regular exercise, regular healthy meals and a consistent bedtime can be positive strategies to ensure that wellbeing is preserved. Helping children to plan connection time with friends can ensure that they have social opportunities to look forward to. Relaxation, meditation and breathing techniques are positive techniques that can reduce anxious tendencies and enhance wellbeing. A small amount of planning prior to the long holiday break can pay great dividends to ensure that children remain happy and connected.

Holidays

With the holidays not too far away, it is worth considering how the change in routine can affect our teens. Parents and carers will possibly be juggling work and caring commitments, which often leaves teens with more than usual downtime.

Week 6

There are a number of exciting, experiential learning activities occurring for our Yr 7 students next week. On Monday and Tuesday our eLearning Coordinator, Ms Wendy Duckworth is running a STEAM incursion. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Music. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and develop their skills in these disciplines. Students will relish the opportunity to work collaboratively with like minds to strategise and problem solve.

On Tuesday we have a Yr 7-9 Assembly, where our Secondary School Captains will be launching their 2023 vision and motto. This assembly is key to establishing cultural aims for our student leaders and Yr 7 will undoubtedly enjoy the fun atmosphere and opportunity to connect as a cross-grade group.

On Thursday, the Christian Studies faculty together with our School Chaplain, Ms Kirsten Philips, will be running a teacher-led workshop “Loving thy Neighbour”. During Term 4 in Christian Studies, students have looked at the ‘Great Commandment’ and focused on Care for Others.  As part of this program students examine different areas in society that need care. To immerse students in this topic and help them empathise with those in need, students will take part in the incursion which will focus on poverty.

In addition, some of our Yr 7 students will be taking part in rehearsals and performance for the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy End of Year Performance at The Concourse, Chatswood.

Visual Arts

As part of the Visual Arts program, Yr 7 students are learning about what it means to be an art critic. They have been fortunate to have access to artworks from our Redlands Art Prize Collection as key learning opportunities this term. Students are making videos about key collection artworks where they have assumed the role of art critics, producers, directors and editors.

Junior School Speech Day 2022

We are delighted to announce this event will take place at 11am on Wednesday 7 December at the Big Top, Luna Park. All students are expected to attend this final formal occasion of the school year with every student performing at least one item on stage. Further details of arrival times for the event will be communicated to families soon. The event lasts for approximately 2 hours and culminates the school year at Redlands.

In each Junior School class, six prizes are awarded as outlined below:

  • Two prizes for academic excellence
  • Two prizes for outstanding progress
  • Two prizes for citizenship

Each year, class teachers award these prizes based on their observations over the whole year and in conjunction feedback from specialist teachers who teach them too. In addition, there are some major prizes awarded in Yr 6 only. All of these prizes will be presented at Speech Day which will also be the occasion for the announcement of our 2023 student leaders.

Please note that every student will be required to have their school blazer for this formal event.

2023 Student Orientation – Tuesday 8 November

On Tuesday, we were excited to welcome over fifty new students who will join the Junior School in 2023 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. Our current students welcomed their soon-to-be peers with warmth and friendship, as many of the new students commented on to me in the final session I spent with them. All of them left having made a new friend or two, an aim of both theirs and ours for the morning.

As part of the day, Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 also moved up a year to the Year Hroups that they will be in next year. This allowed them some time with different teachers, new students, and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. Students rotated around each classroom doing a series of engaging activities and from speaking to many students and observing them, I know that this time was hugely beneficial for many of them.

On the same day, our current Yr 6 students spent an important day on the Senior Campus as part of their transition to Secondary School next year. Joined by their parents for the first part of the day, I spoke with many of the group the next day who shared excitement about the opportunity to forge some new friendships with new students joining in Yr 7, spending time in a range of exciting specialist classes and also simply wandering around the Senior Campus and starting to familiarise themselves with soon-to-be new surroundings.

2023 Student Leadership Nominations

In the coming weeks, our Yr 6, 2023 student leadership self-nominations will commence for our current Yr 5 cohort ahead of their transition into Yr 6 and the Junior School student leadership role that come with this move.

  • Junior School Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • Arts Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • Sports Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • Environment Captains (one girl and one boy)
  • House Captains (one girl and one boy per House – 8 in total)

Students will also be able to nominate themselves for Wellbeing, Technology or Library student leadership roles for next year in this process and these positions are finalised in Term 1 of Yr 6.

As part of the process, students will hear from some staff leaders and also from some of the present Junior School student leaders who will share their experiences as well as students in Yr 6 who have shown great leadership this year without necessarily having a badge; an important message for all students to hear too. Yr 5 will also have a chance to ask questions in this process.

The Yr 5 teachers and I then provide the students with more specific information about the requirements of each role and the School’s expectations of its leaders. Knowing the year group well, I know that we will have no shortage of potential school leaders who I know would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2023.

Students, as well as teachers who know them, will have the opportunity to vote and then these captains will be formally announced for the first time at Speech Day on the last day of this term by our Principal, Mr Webber, and me.

Student Wellbeing Survey

One of the key drivers of the Redlands Strategic Plan is the further development of a positive and supportive culture of wellbeing. Connected to this, and as a new initiative this year to help us achieve this aim, you may recall that in Semester One, students in Yr 3-12 took part in the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Social-Emotional Wellbeing Survey.

This survey is a confidential, strength-based survey which assesses and measures the overall wellbeing of students, allowing us to measure the effectiveness of our pastoral care programs, identify social and emotional needs of specific student groups and compare data with other schools conducting the survey.

The aim is to administer this survey regularly so that we can track the development of our students’ wellbeing over time. Next Tuesday, Redlands students in Yrs 3-12 will complete the survey in their classes and as before, if any student is uncomfortable taking this survey, please let your child’s class teacher know in advance.

Junior School Wellbeing Day of Activities – Friday 18 November

Next Friday, our Junior School students will be enjoying a day of wellbeing activities and fundraising that focus on the wellbeing of our students, teachers and our wider community.

To support this, we have partnered with Bear Cottage, a children’s hospital in Manly with whom Redlands has had a long connection with. Connected to this, we were delighted to welcome some of their team to our assembly this week including Beau the therapy dog who was a big hit with our students. Two of our Yr 4 students, Poppy Pope and Amelie Cadman, came and saw me last term about fundraising for Bear Cottage, and will be part of the organising team.

On Friday, as well as a number of fun activities that the students will be involved in, we will also be raising money through a variety of fun stalls and games at lunch time. We will also host an optional sausage sizzle for students.

Bear Cottage merchandise will also be available for sale as per the flyer if your child would like to purchase any of the merchandise.

What do students need to know or bring on the day?

  • Plenty of gold coins for lunchtime stalls and activities
  • Lunchtime stalls will include ice-cream cones, fruit kebabs, chalk art drawing and Bear Cottage merchandise for sale
  • $2 for an optional sausage sizzle which will be run by some of our class parents
  • Zooper Doopers will also be available for those students who are dairy or gluten free.
  • All students should wear PE uniform on the day
  • In the event of rain, we will still be going ahead with a wet weather plan as required
  • Please note that if your child has allergies or is gluten free, they will be able to use their coins on non-food related activities.

We look forward to a fun Wellbeing Day!

Ruby the Redlands Rubbish Turtle

In our assembly this week, the students, staff and I were inspired to hear from Yr 4 girls Clare Burke, Isha Gupta, Aisha Hu, Coco Noakes, Emily Robertson and Amelia Svensson.

The girls had come to see me recently to raise concerns about the increase in rubbish they had noticed in the playground with students not putting rubbish in the correct bins (or even any bins) which are clearly labelled and in many places around the campus, which the SRC worked to help have installed.

The girls’ message in assembly was a strong one, creating awareness of the problem and also provided the rest of the students with guidance on how to reduce the plastic we bring to school and not just on waste-free Wednesday.

The girls also shared how plastic impacts our oceans and sea creatures in particular, which led them to create a visual prop made out of chicken wire and stuffed with plastic that the girls had found and collected around the Junior School.

And so, Ruby the Redlands Rubbish Turtle was created and will be displayed as a reminder to our community about doing the right thing.

Thank you to the girls for their leadership and actions to support the school and this wider issue.

Strings Concerts

On Monday, we were treated to a wonderful K-6 Strings Concert with many Junior School students involved in some wonderful performances. As was the case for the MIP concert last week, we were thrilled to have parents and guests amongst our audience for this special event and I extend my appreciation to the Music teachers and tutors for their guidance of the students and of course, to the students themselves for giving us a special concert.

Yesterday, a group of Prep and Junior School musicians performed at Bougainvillea Retirement Village after school treating the residents to a memorable performance. This group were scheduled to perform at the postponed Spring Fair so it was lovely for them to perform for an appreciative audience and for us to be able to connect with our local neighbours in this way again after the challenged of the last two years.

Anglicare’s Toy’s ‘n’ Tucker Campaign

We are delighted to once again support Anglicare’s Toy’s ‘n’ Tucker Campaign, knowing the positive impact donated gifts will make to so many in need. On the Junior Campus, gifts can be donated at either Junior or Prep receptions until Friday 2 December.

Due to COVID, we have not been able to have gifts collected in person and as always, we thank you for considering supporting joining Redlands in this special Christmas cause.

Bear Cottage and Beau Came to Visit

This week we welcomed visitors from Bear Cottage who talked to our Prep School and introduced Beau the Therapy dog to us. Our students were thrilled to hear that the money they raised at the Prep Wellbeing Day went towards training Beau to become a good friend to sick kids at Bear Cottage.

This was an important moment for our children to see and understand what taking action looks like. A child is never too young to have a voice and take action with something they are passionate about.

K-6 Strings Concert

What an absolute joy to watch our Yr 2 strings players perform live this week at the Junior Campus Strings Concert. I sat very proudly in the front row and couldn’t wipe the smile from my face as the whole of Yr 2 played their collaborative pieces. I reflected on their growth throughout the year, what a huge achievement indeed. We thank Ms Moses and all the Music Department for their passion and guidance. Listening and watching the older students was a treat for our young Prep students as they could see what lies ahead!

It was also exciting to have four of kindergarten strings players on stage as well. We are very proud of their courage.

Yr 2 Disco

Yr 2 are counting down the days until they get to show their moves and have some fun at the inaugural Yr 2 Disco. All Yr 2 students are invited to come along dressed up to glow in the dark on Friday November 17 at 4.30pm-6.30pm.

Please drop your child off at the Dunnet Hall entrance from 4.15pm. Pick up will be inside Dunnet Hall at 6.30pm. Please wait until the children are lined up in the classes to make the process easier. Mr Trevor Dunne will be our DJ and there will be games throughout the session to keep the fun going.

There may be opportunity to request extra tickets closer to the event, but we respectfully request that you do not book more than 2 tickets on Trybooking. Any remaining seats that are available when Trybooking has closed will be distributed on a first come, first in basis.

Musgrove Opera Incursion

Today we welcomed Musgrove Opera to Redlands for a K-2 Incursion. The students thoroughly enjoyed watching the opera Max & Moritz by Aija Draguns, which told the story of two naughty children and seven daring pranks! The students enjoyed learning about opera and the mischief the characters got up to.

The children had a wonderful time engaging in a wide range of activities and mother nature was certainly kind to us, such a beautiful day. ISA Code of Conduct

As we move into round 2 of the Summer ISA Sporting Season, we would like to draw your attention to the ISA Code of Conduct for both Players and Spectators. The full document is available on the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse and we encourage all parents and players to familiarise themselves with the expectations when participating in participating in ISA Sporting competitions.

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS

2.1       Once committed to a sport for the season, players must honour that commitment wholeheartedly. This same commitment applies to ISA representation. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

2.2       Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.  (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.3       Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either school. Players should not celebrate the opposition’s mistakes. (Level of breach: 1)

2.4       Players should be positive in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the rules/laws and spirit of the game.  The referee or umpire’s decision is final, and the Captain of the team is the only one who may ask for clarification of a decision at the appropriate time. (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.5       The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.6       Players shall never resort to violent or abusive language or behaviour or engage in unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage.  Racial vilification will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.7        Players should be punctual and adhere to their school’s dress code.  The home team – and in particular the Captain should welcome the visiting team and its Captain.  At the conclusion of the game acknowledgment and thanks should be given to referees, umpires, officials such as scorers/touch judges and the opposition. (Level of breach: 1)

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS

3.1       Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.

3.2       Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators. (Level of breach: 1, 2 and 3)

3.3       Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff.  If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.4       Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.5       Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents.  For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.  (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.6       Sledging and negative comments are totally unacceptable. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause. (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.7       It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age. The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.8       Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence, rough or illegal play.  (Level of breach 2 or 3)

3.9       Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the host school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators.  At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.  (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.10      Alcohol is not to be consumed at ISA fixtures. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

Basketball

We are now heading into Round 4 of the ISA Basketball competition. Our students and coaches have been working hard and the results are starting to show, with many of our teams finishing with a win on Saturday. If you would like to see where your team is sitting on the ladder you can check the ISA website. With the majority of our teams playing at NBISC, it is going to be a massive day for Redlands Basketball, we encourage students to arrive early or stay after their games to support their Redlands peers.

The fixtures for Saturday are available on the Redlands Pulse – Fixtures page, please check your game time carefully. A reminder that training session details and fixture details are available on your student calendar.

Students should be arriving 30 minutes prior to the start time for their game. Students are required to wear their basketball uniform (new basketball jersey and new shorts). In the event of cooler weather students are permitted to wear their Redlands fleece or Redlands Sport tracksuit – non-Redlands attire is not permitted to be worn to Saturday fixtures.

Best of luck to all of our teams competing in Round 4 this weekend!

Touch Football

Around the grounds:

Our Senior 3 boys remain undefeated, and our Jnr A boys put in their best performance of the season so far.

In place of our Bye round, our girls’ teams participated in internal games. The Senior 1st and 2nds girls played off, the Inter B and Jnr B, and the Inter A and Jnr A.

The girls’ games were closed out with the opportunity to partake in a full length of the field race with the opportunity to be titled the Champion of Champions.

A special mention to Sarah Zeppel from the Inter B who won our Champions dash, Sam Wightwick finishing in close second and Amelie Dewar claiming third. A great morning for our female side of the Touch Football program, with a lot of laughs and enjoyment!

During this ISA season, our Redlands coaches will recognise our Team of the Week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in trainings, and outstanding performance in games.

Team Lists

* Please note, most teams are travelling this week. Communications around busses will be sent in team specific emails to parents/carers and students.

Outside of School

Congratulations to the players who have been selected in Norths Bears Touch football Junior State Cup train on squads! Goodluck with final team selection!

Reminders

  • WET WEATHER – an email notification will be sent to players and parents IF wet weather changes training plans.
  • Attendance is compulsory at 2x weekly training sessions and Saturday fixtures.

Goodluck for Round 4 games this weekend!

Rowing

During the past two weeks all year levels have completed crew selections for the upcoming CGGS/ Marist Regatta in Canberra (12/11), ISRA Regatta at Penrith (19/11) or the Melbourne Head Regatta on the Yarra River (19/11).

This selection process has seen students complete a battery of testing including scull trials (Seniors) and ergo testing (Seniors, Yr 8 & Yr 7) with many students achieving personal best times, this is especially pleasing at such an early stage of the season.

After the regattas held on the 19/11, crews will be reselected again for the Reindeer Regatta held at Penrith on 3/12. The reselection will give students that have made significant improvements an opportunity to break into higher ranked crews.

Tennis

There was great weather over the weekend and the students were able to have some excellent matches against their opponents. We are glad to see new players are taking the time to understand match format and scoring and impressed at how fast they are able to pick everything up! We want to continue to see both new and old players improving their skills over the course of the season. Please remember to check the new roster and draw each week for this round’s competition details! Good luck this weekend!

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

Sailing

Redlands Sailing last week finally saw the return of sunny days on Sydney harbour with sparkling conditions for almost every session. This week, our sailors will be competing in their first interschool event of the year, the Redlands Sailing Cup. Racing kicks off at 10:30am this Saturday (12 November) at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Over 80 sailors will be competing in the event, with entries from Wenona, Monte, Riverview, Ascham, St Aloysius and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. We invite you all to come join us to support our teams!

Fitness Centre

Please be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. As of last week, students will not be able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:55am with students able to join throughout the morning.

In addition, the Wednesday Morning Session (16 November) will now be a High-Performance Session targeted towards both a Girls and Boys Basketball 1st. These sessions will be focused on speed and flexibility as well as rehab and injury prevention.

We have had brilliant numbers through the Fitness Centre over the past week with students from all Age-Groups utilizing the space across all morning sessions. The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep. Sports at Redlands.

The Fitness Centre is an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and, with sessions across all mornings, Monday to Friday, this is a space that can be used by all Age-Groups across the week.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following:

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

Winter Rep. Rugby Program

Please be aware that there will be a meeting for all students, Year 11s and Year 12 wishing to trial for the Redlands Rugby 1st XV next season.

The meeting will be held on Level 2 of the Learning Hub during lunchtime on Monday 14 November. This meeting will cover our Preseason Planning, expectations and also information about positional selections and details.

I look forward to catching up with all of you.

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Sport Absences

Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture

Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures

Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

A Culture of Thanks

“Silent thanks isn’t much use to anyone”

I spoke to the Junior School students at assembly on Tuesday about the importance of saying thank you as we approach the end of our season. If your child is involved in Saturday sport thanks to their coaches, thanks to the teacher who supervise our Non Rep sports on a Wednesday, thanks to the opposition and referees on match day. Design a card, write a note, shake their hand.  And I hope they take the opportunity to thank you for driving them, feeding them and supporting them in their sporting fields.

Redlands Pulse

The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. As you would be aware we have switched over to our new look Pulse later last term which allows more functionality and more positive user interaction. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

2023 CIS Nomination – Current Yr 4 or 5 Students Only

There are some sports that Redlands do not have a pathway through in our competition (IPSHA) but allow us to participate in at a higher level. For these sports we are still invited to nominate students to attend if they are proficient in this sport. Please be aware that NSW CIS is one level below NSW Selection and as such is a very high skill level for those student athletes who attend.

CIS Nominations are only available for those students in Year 5 and 6 in 2023

The nomination for this process is via a ‘paper trial’ in lieu of a physical trial in the particular sport.

Term 1 2023

CIS Girls Cricket Trials  Trial Date 10/2/23       Nominations due by Term 4 2022

CIS Boys Cricket Trials Trial Date 13/2/23       Nominations due by Term 4 2022

CIS Boys AFL Trials       Trial Date 3/4/23         Nominations due by Term 4 2022

Term 2 2023

CIS Boys Hockey

CIS Boys Rugby League

CIS Boys Softball

PLEASE NOTE: Where there is an over subscription of responses for a particular sport (some sports cap the number of students per school permitted to attend the trial) they will be lodged based on the order of receipt.

If you are interested, please complete the link which can be found here in the CIS Pathway tab.

Music

For the love of Music!

The great music keeps coming! After last week’s magnificent Yr 4 & 5 MIP concert, Monday’s K-6 String celebration was everything it promised to be. From our Yr 2 students performing with such pride and poise, to our Prep and Junior School String and Chamber ensembles, the rich value of the Redlands String learning journey was on glorious display. We could not be prouder of all our performers and once again thank all our staff who work tirelessly to afford our students these opportunities.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Andy Kent who has served our school community and Strings Program in various capacities for the past 12 years. This week’s String Concert sadly marks her last with us at Redlands. Her warmth and collegiality and work with the Cellists in both MIP & Yr 2 Strings as well as in private tuition has been so greatly appreciated. We wish her all the best with her pending sea change for 2023.

Please read on to hear about all the exciting happenings in our Curricular, Cocurricular and Extracurricular spaces across both campuses this week!

MIP Concert

Rave reviews have been flowing in for our MIP students who performed in our annual concert last week. Performing in both small and large (80+!) ensembles, students demonstrated their impressive skills learnt from the MIP program. With momentum strong, now is a great time to enrol in private lessons should you wish to boost your child’s instrumental learning.

Yr 2 Strings

Yr 2 Strings were very excited to be performing in the K-6 Strings on Monday. Featuring songs such as Josh’s Jig and Sea Shells, students performed beautifully and demonstrated their learning with confidence. For photos, please scroll down to the Strings Section!

Yr 12 Excursion

Yr 12 HSC Music 2 and IB Music students were treated to a rare performance of one of their set works of study at the Opera House on Friday night. Experiencing the new Opera House in all its acoustic glory, the collaborative work Compassion by Lior & Nigel Westlake (in addition to a range of other popular and spiritual songs arranged for both contemporary band and symphony orchestra) provided wonderful inspiration and stimulus ideas for these students as they launch into their HSC and IB Compositional projects for the year ahead. Of particular interest was the frequent intersection of styles and cultures and the unique approach to instrumentation. An enriching evening for all in attendance.

Project Based Learning Yrs 8-10

With formal assessments now all wrapped up for our elective music students, each year has taken the reins of their learning by embarking on student-led projects. Yr 8 are going to ‘mash’ Music with any other subject of their choosing (starting with Maths & Music – exploring the link between Chance and Aleatory); Yr 9 are creating and underscoring their own short Australian Films and Yr 10 will be launching their own Passion Projects when they return from camp next week.

Yr 7 World Trip! (Kind of).

Brilliant sounds have been emanating from our Yr 7 Music classrooms as we have been looking at Music from around the world. There have been compositions for the Japanese Koto, Djembe Drum Circles with many other countries on the musical itinerary for exploration in the weeks ahead.

Strings Concert Success

Our strings students across K-6 featured in our annual Strings Concert this week and performed to a sell-out crowd! Congratulations Prep Strings, Junior Strings, Year 2 Strings and the Junior Chamber Ensembles who all demonstrated poise and professionalism in their performances, dazzling the audience with a variety of repertoire. We look forward to seeing these students continue to grow as musicians and if you would like your child to enrol in a String ensemble for 2023 now is a great time to get the ball rolling by exploring options on Pulse.

Performance and Enrichment

Musgrove Opera Incursion K – 5

Today we welcomed Musgrove Opera to Redlands for Yrs K – 5 Incursion. The students thoroughly enjoyed watching the new Australian opera Max & Moritz by Aija Draguns which told the story of two children and seven daring pranks! The students enjoyed learning about opera and all the mischief the characters got up to!
