Junior Music Festival

Following an outstanding Junior Music Festival last Thursday night, we would like to congratulate the students of the Junior School for yet another superb Festival. The excitement from the students as they performed, matched with infectious smiles, brought every performance on stage to life. Encompassing a wide range of roles from singing to playing, conducting to accompanying, staging to ushering, students and staff all contributed to the success of the 2018 Junior Music Festival, exploring the theme of the concert, STEAM

Thank you to Mr Benjamin Castelli who has worked diligently in directing the Junior Music Festival at Redlands and in leading our dedicated Junior School Music teachers, Mrs Andrea Kent, Ms Stephanie McInnes and Mr Michael Warby. Your collaborative work as a team is commendable and collectively you created memorable curriculum performances linked to the students’ interdisciplinary exploration of STEAM subjects. Thanks also to the superb administrative support by Mrs Jacqueline McGlade in overseeing the various logistics of this event.

We also extend our thanks to other Music staff and tutors in their roles as conductors, musicians, stage managers and assistants. These staff members include Mr Pete Atkins, Ms Alexandra Auchere, Mrs Anne-Marie Braid, Mr Cameron Harker, Ms Annette Houghton, Mr Zi-Hao Li, Mr Nathan Milliner, Ms Mary Rapp, Mrs Amy Richardson, Mr Nathaniel Smith, Mrs Mar’yana Sywak, Ms Tomomi Takahashi, Mr David Wooltorton, Mr Jason Xu, all supported by Stage Manager Ms Katie Paul and the Redlands Production team. We also would like to acknowledge the support of our AV team led by Mr Janis Auzins in overseeing sound, lighting and the innovative addition of visuals that captured the performances live on stage. Thanks to Mr Rod Loveridge and his Facilities team, for construction of the stage and organisation of equipment.

Thanks also to Head of Junior School Mr Ari Guha and the team of dedicated Junior School staff for their important roles in preparing the students on and off stage, and Ms Leonie Atkins for her overseeing, in communicating rehearsal and logistical arrangements with staff.

Annual Music Awards Dinner

The Music Department and the Friends of Music Committee presents the Annual Music Awards Dinner at the Manly Golf Club on Friday 24 August. This event recognises the outstanding musical achievements of students, while also reflecting on the dedication of Redlands Music staff who play a significant role in building enriching quality learning experiences for our learners. This celebration dinner includes a wide variety of entertainment and performances, culminating with achievement awards that are presented to students who have demonstrated leadership skills, musical excellence, service and overall dedication to the Music program. All students in Yr 7 are presented with a Participation Certificate at the dinner while Yr 12 musicians are presented with a Music Graduation Gift.

As part of the Term 3 Small Ensembles program, students presented repertoire for selection in a variety of Semester 2 events. Notification of Ensembles who will be performing at the Music Awards Dinner will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse and emailed this Friday 10 August. Tickets are adults – $70, students – $45. Bookings for Music Awards Dinner are now available here.

Music Centre Opening

Week of Celebrations

In celebrating the official opening of the new Music Centre, the department will be presenting a series of performances from Monday 27 August through to Monday 3 September. This will consist of various concerts before school, during lunchtimes and after school, in providing the wider school community with the opportunity to listen to a broad selection of repertoire in the new Music Performance venue. Senior Campus

HICES Music Festival

HICES Music Camp will be held from Sunday 19 August to Wednesday 22 August at Stanwell Tops Conference Centre. Bus departure will be from the Adams Centre on Sunday 19 August at 4.00pm with rolls marked from 3.45pm. The 2018 HICES Music Festival participants will present a concert at the Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday 22 August. Ticket sales are now open. Please note that cash sales are only available at the door on the night of the concert.

Music Ensemble Rehearsals

Over the next month, students will be rehearsing in small ensembles for consideration and selection of performers at the annual Music Awards Dinner on Friday 24 August (Week 5). During these rehearsals students will receive the opportunity to work with Music specialists in extending chamber music skills. 

Auditions for Extension Ensembles (Week 4)

At the conclusion of the Senior Music Festival last term and the start of new repertoire for various events this Semester, enrolments are now open for students interested in joining a Guitar Ensemble, Choir, Concert Band or Orchestra. Auditions for students who are interested in moving to the Advanced level of Ensembles and other auditioned groups will be held throughout Week 4. Please sign up at Music Reception. 

Spring Fair

Yrs 7-12 Rock Band Performance

With the Spring Fair fast approaching on Saturday 15 September, the Redlands Rock program (Yrs 5-12) will be provided with the opportunity to perform for their family and friends as showcased musicians at this event. Please mark this date in your diary.

Instrumental Competition Auditions (Week 8)

The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece WILL NOT be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist. Copies of piano accompaniment scores must be submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.

Ensemble Rehearsals

Cocurricular rehearsals have now commenced. Semester 2 is the perfect time for students to enrol and experience the broad range of musical experiences that our department has to offer. Please visit the Junior Music Office or email us for more information.

Musicianship Classes

Students who are currently learning an instrument and who would like to further extend their knowledge of Music Theory are encouraged to join the Musicianship class on Tuesday mornings (7.30-8.15am).
