Issue 23 2018 - 09 Aug 2018

From the Deputy Principal

During the past week I have been delighted to witness the exceptional participation of our Junior School students on stage at their annual Junior Music Festival and on the track and in the field at yesterday’s very successful Athletics Carnival.

Under the theme of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), students showcased both their developing and proficient Music skills in front of a full audience of parents and friends in Dunnet Hall at the Junior Music Festival. How great it was to see the students’ focus, excitement and enjoyment as they performed musical items by artists as diverse as Gustav Holst, Elton John and Imagine Dragons, all connected thematically and linked to their learning in other key learning areas – a terrific demonstration of integrated learning. Each year we see the students’ skills and confidence grow, resulting in a very enjoyable performance. A sincere thank you to all our Music teachers and tutors and administrative staff for their work in preparing for, and staging, such a wonderful performance, and for the Junior School staff support for this major event. I have to admit that I was tempted to join in for the finale, Europe’s rock anthem The Final Countdown, but fortunately for the students and staff on stage, I managed to exercise some restraint. The energy and enthusiasm was palpable – thank you all.

Yesterday our Junior School students, along with a number of Year 2 student athletes, had the opportunity to fledge their athletic prowess at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Participation was certainly the name of the day, with the stands mostly empty as students competed valiantly or cheered loudly for their House, and for a 5th consecutive year, Cowper was awarded the trophy for House Champion. It was extremely heartening to see the number of students trying their best, giving 100% effort to each event in which they participated – not necessarily with the aim of winning, but for the experience of trying something new, stretching and challenging themselves physically and mentally, and for the satisfaction that comes from putting in one’s best effort. Many of you may have read Angela Duckworth’s work on GRIT – her TED talk on the power of passion and perseverance speaks about exactly this topic. I congratulate all students for their excellent efforts, and all of the Junior School Sports staff and teachers for their superb organisational efforts to ensure the success of the event. It was also tremendous to see Year 7 and 11 helpers and Secondary School House Mentors and staff helping out.

During the past week I have met with the RPFA and dedicated parent coordinators who are enthusiastically organising and supporting the Redlands Spring Fair to be held on Saturday 15 September. I encourage all families to ensure this date is in their diaries. It is shaping up to be a fantastic day of carnival fun and enjoyment for the whole Redlands community – staff, students, families and alumni. We hope to see you all there!

Gratitude

At the final assembly of last term, I spoke to the students about the importance of the simple act of gratitude – both for themselves and for others. We have so much and so many people for which to be thankful in our lives. However, we often do not take the time to express our heartfelt gratitude to others. I hope the words from my speech below might have encouraged some students to take the time to say thank you to you and other family members over the recent school holidays. (I know a number of teachers were moved by the kind thank you notes they received from some of their students at the end of term.)

“When you were young, I am sure all of you heard your parents reminding you to use your manners and say “please” and “thank you”. But in our fast-paced world, sometimes we do not stop to take the time to show our gratitude towards others, to acknowledge their efforts and simply say thank you.

My father was legendary for the hand-written thank you card to colleagues, friends and family. Growing up, I got to see the joy that these simple expressions of gratitude brought others on a daily or weekly basis. I am sure many of you know the warm feeling when someone has taken the time to thank you for your efforts.

However, the simple act of gratitude also has an extremely positive effect on the person that takes the time to say thank you or who can reflect on the things for which they are grateful. Gratitude is a central tenet of positive psychology and studies have shown that practising gratitude makes us happier, increases our psychological wellbeing and increases our self-esteem. In his book, The Good Life, social researcher Hugh McKay poses the question, what makes a life worth living? What he found is that a “good life” is not the sum of our security, wealth, status or career success. Instead, what he found is the good life is one defined by how well we treat others, the quality of our relationships, our willingness to connect with others in a useful way and our capacity for selflessness.

Recently, I have been proud to see and hear of Redlands students who have illustrated this selflessness, whether it was the over 100 Yr 10 students who braved the cold as part of the Vinnie’s Sleep Out to raise awareness and empathy for the plight of homelessness, or the students who have given up their seat on the bus to a member of the public (who has then contacted us to acknowledge their actions).

So, I challenge all of you, either this afternoon, over these holidays or when you return to school in Term 3, to take the time to stop and say or write a heartfelt thank you to someone who has made a difference in your life. Maybe it’s a sibling, grandparent or parent. Maybe it’s the bus driver, a shop assistant or a friend. Or maybe it’s a teacher, coach or tutor.

Stop to express your gratitude for all they have done for you. Not only will you make them feel better, but you will also feel better, too.”

Science

Experience it! Engineering Challenge Day for Girls

During the holidays, a few Yr 8-10 girls attended a Student Workshop day offered by Sydney University. It involved a welcome from the Chair of the Women in Engineering Society, Varuna Fernando, and Greg Ewing, General Manager, Institute of Engineers Australia. Each spoke of the importance of getting more women involved in the industry, what engineering is and isn’t and the statistics of perhaps why so few women apply. Susana Jimenez outlined her journey from high school to Civil Engineer working on the West Connex upgrade. Student workshops included finding solutions to problems, using laser cut robots to complete actions such as picking up boxes and balls, critical thinking in designing a straw bridge to hold a 1kg mass, designing and building a floating house to a budget based on limited resources and to make a pulse tracker to monitor a heart. The day finished up with a panel of industry experts and student engineers facilitating student questions.

Ella Delaney: “I initially wasn’t sure about going because I didn’t know much about Engineering. I enjoy Maths and Science and am a creative person, so can see myself combining all of these skills in one of the Engineering fields. My personality is drawn to helping people and I am fascinated by the way Engineers find solutions to everyday problems. I see it as a powerful way to make a difference and change communities.“

Emily Webb: “I really enjoyed Experience It! and thought it was very worthwhile. The activities were quite easy but I had attended other engineering and science events before. If another girl was thinking of doing it, I would say just go for it and try it out.”

If anyone is interested in Engineering then check out the various talks and scholarships offered by Sydney University.

Trial Examinations

As Yr 12 work their way through their Trial Examinations offsite, their return home each night may be a roller coaster. It is important that the whole Trial Examination experience is framed as just that – a trial. If and when students come home disappointed, they are encouraged to list the things that took them by surprise, draw a line under it, and immediately focus on their preparation for the next one. This list combined with feedback from teachers will be the two most valuable resources students will have this year.

Pastoral Care

In the next three weeks, students will able to choose to participate in Mindfulness activities during Tutor Time. It is hoped that students can have some “down time” from their increased learning load and be able to handle any issues they may encounter in a positive and manageable way.

While we all believe that our boys and girls have resilience to navigate through stress and pressure, it is a delicate balance for teenagers between maintaining independence and seeking for help. Hence, we strongly encourage Yr 11s to speak up and ask for help from their teachers, parents and friends. If at any time, a student does have any difficulties that they may be presented with, we ask them individually from the outset to talk to those that can offer assistance.

The Meningococcal Vaccination for Yr 11 students will be scheduled on Tuesday 11 September. More details and consent form will be distributed closer to the date.

Uniform

It is important that the Yr 11 students wear their uniform with pride. I ask that parents and students be mindful of the correct uniform especially in regard to non-school jumpers, male hair length and female skirt length. While this may seem like a minor issue to some, it is important to maintain good standards of appearance at all times.

Year 10

Pastoral Care

The teenage years are when students begin mastering skills that enable them to be independent. The whole school community is responsible for encouraging this independence, while also ensuring that students are supported and remain safe. While some teenagers crave freedom and independence, others need a little push to become confident and self-motivated. Regardless of which best describes your teenager, you can assist them to develop this independence while also finding the balance between freedom and safety.

Tombola Jars

Yr 10 students are running a Jam Jar Tombola stall this year at the Redlands Spring Fair. Students are encouraged to collect jars and fill them with lollies, toys, craft items, vouchers etc. Once the jars are full students can bring them into school and give to their Tutor.

Summer Sport Selections

All students were emailed a link to complete their Summer Sports selections on Monday 30 July. Selections will be closing on Sunday 12 August.

Achievements

One of the most engaging and entertaining evenings at Redlands is A Night to Delight, and what a night it was. The impressive display of linguistic skills, costumes, music and delicious culinary treats. The Japanese Soran Fisherman’s Dance was fantastic, and such a wonderful display of costume, language and dance. The School Hymn sung in Latin was excellent, and I know Dr Lennox was very impressed. The Can-Can was outstanding with such colour and enthusiasm. The beautiful Story of the Moon Festival was lovely, and the explanation so wonderfully explained. And lastly, the La Gozadera Spanish performance was outstanding. Congratulations to all of Yr 8 for such a wonderful evening and thank you sincerely to Mr John Holden and his team in the Languages Department for the incredible amounts of time and effort which went into making it such a successful evening.

Congratulations to Remy Wilson, Jacob Gold, Kyle Banfield and Charlie Baskerville who attended the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition at the Art Gallery of NSW this week. What a fantastic experience and achievement for the boys. Further details will be in the Science section of next week’s Note Day.

As of this week, every Tutor group in Yr 8 is to plan and lead the fortnightly Year Assembly. This week Cowper Blue is to be congratulated on an exceptional presentation. From the fantastic dance piece, to the Heads and Tails quiz; these students, with their Tutor, Ms Patton, are to be commended on their efforts. Well done Cowper Blue.

Head of Junior School

A Junior School event involving each and every one of our students takes some organising. Two within a week is remarkable and under the expert planning and organisation of our Music and Sports staff, our parents, teachers and most of all, our students, have enjoyed two spectacular Junior School events that evoked such obvious joy. Both Mr Castelli (Music) and Mr Carter (Sport) will rightly acknowledge the support of so many other staff to deliver the Junior Music Festival and the House Athletics Carnival, but from my perspective and that of colleagues, it is important to recognise their leadership in their respective events.

Junior Music Festival

In my opinion, and one shared by others, last Thursday’s Junior Music Festival was the best one that I have seen in my tenure at Redlands, and having seen all eleven of them, I do feel I can genuinely offer an opinion of this nature. From my seat, it was impossible not to feel the palpable energy of the students and their genuine happiness and sense of enjoyment as they entertained the audience with a wonderfully eclectic array of music items which took many of us back in time! As I commented in my final remarks at the conclusion of the show, nights like these do make me incredibly proud to be part of a School that allows every student to be involved of a concert of this magnitude and then do it so well. My sincere thanks again to the many, many staff involved on so many levels who all worked collaboratively to allow us in the audience to thoroughly enjoy a spectacular musical event to kick off Term 3.

House Athletics Carnival

After the rain of last year, the sun returned to shine on our students as the highly-anticipated House Athletics Carnival proved to be another thrilling student-focused day with every child involved in a range of track and field events. Like the Junior Music Festival, this enormous team effort from teachers under the guidance of Mr Carter and our Sports staff, enables an event of this magnitude to take place so smoothly for 450 students.

From my vantage point on duty in the stands, it also occurred to me that this event was one of the very rare ones in our School’s calendar that involved students from all three sections of our School with eligible Yr 2 Prep students invited to compete as well as a wonderful team of Yr 7 student helpers and Yr 11 House mentors, many of whom enjoyed reminiscing about Junior School Carnivals that they had been involved in.

As always, it was also a joy to watch and hear the genuine sense of enjoyment, participation and House spirit amongst all of the students on a day that I hope will leave them with many happy memories and a sense of achievement; arguably the most important outcomes of the day.

Redlands Spring Fair

I am sure that the Redlands Spring Fair date is already in your diaries and there is already an early Spring Fair ‘buzz’ as things start to take shape ahead of this special biennial event in the Redlands calendar. As we head towards the date, please keep a look out for additional information and opportunities for students and families to support and prepare for this major event.

Mosman Youth Awards for Literature 2018

During our assembly this week, I was delighted to announce and congratulate Yr 4 students, Julia Cooper-Hor and Maria Smith, who have been named among the shortlisted students in this year’s Mosman Youth Awards for Literature 2018. The girls and their families have been invited to attend this presentation at the end of this month and we look forward to hearing how this special evening goes for them too.

Jeans for Genes

Last Friday, our School community of students and teachers enjoyed the opportunity to don the denim and support Jeans for Genes again. Along with the gold coin donation, we were very proud of Yr 6 girls Ava Taylor, Josie Bannon, Anabelle Cullen, Lara Farrell and Zara Naismith, who organised a wonderful bake sale and raffle to help raise further funds. Their obvious efforts, generously supported by classmates and friends, raised an additional $1980 and Ava then went on to raise a further $380 selling Jeans for Genes merchandise at Willoughby Netball courts on Friday night, something she had also done last year! A number of our students regularly make a difference to the lives of others and alongside the aspect of fundraising, their approach to planning, problem solving and delivering aspects of the day allow further skills and dispositions to be developed, as was clearly the case here. Well done to all who supported this cause and particularly the Yr 6 girls mentioned.

Assembly Guest

We were excited to welcome our long-standing Scientist-in-residence, Dr Alana Wylie, to our assembly this week as she started the build-up to this year’s National Science Week with this year’s theme, Game Changers and Change Makers. Connected to this, Dr Wylie talked about scientists and innovators of the past who were pioneers in making great changes to the way we live today.

As some of you may be aware but perhaps many not, Dr Wylie has been visiting Redlands since 2012 as part of her own interest in volunteering in sharing her passion in Science and we have been fortunate to have been her partner school throughout this time. These increasingly-frequent visits actually gave her much food for thought in what she was doing and why and it is exciting for her and us to share that she has set up her own Science education company to help to inspire and motivate the next-generation of critical thinkers from primary and secondary students, to educators alike. Ultimately, Dr Wylie is passionate about igniting young minds to think critically, equip them with a problem-solving mindset, and foster an inquiry-based learning culture where asking “why” is encouraged. This has already been evident this week as she has spent time in Prep classrooms and we look forward to partnering with Dr Wylie in providing all of our students with a range of scientific discovery opportunities, not just in Science Week, but as part of our scientific thinking throughout the year.

Matthew Talbot Hostel Support

On behalf of our Junior School Chaplain, Ms McKenzie, I extend appreciation for Junior School families who were able to provide toiletries for the homeless shelter. Redlands staff and Yr 11 students serve breakfast at the hostel every Monday, every single week of the year which Ms McKenzie coordinates and this Service opportunity is one that is an important one for our School.

Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day

As you will have noted in last week’s edition and below, we are looking forward to welcoming the children’s grandparents or special friends next Friday 17 August on this annual special community day for our Junior Campus.

Unless guests are here for the early part of the morning during the Prep part of this day, please can I ask that guests are asked to arrive as close to the scheduled 11am start as possible. This timing is planned to allow our Prep guests to depart at around 10.30am which should then free up parking spaces around the Campus for Junior School guests.

No Tuesday Cocurricular Clubs Week 4

Please note that there will be no Clubs next Tuesday with teachers and students involved in three-way conferences. As per Mrs Sharp’s communication at the start of the term, please be reminded that there will be no Debating sessions on Tuesday as well.

Little Scientists

As a lead up to Science Week, we were privileged to have Dr Alana Wylie visiting Kindergarten, Yr 1 and 2 classes. Redlands is fortunate to have had an enduring relationship with Dr Wylie through the CSIRO’s Scientist and Mathematicians in School Program. She holds a Science PhD in Immunology and Parasitology and has enjoyed applying her scientific skills across many different fields, including scientific research, science commercialisation and communicating science to students. This passion for science and desire to engage more learners in its study led to Dr Wylie volunteering to share her knowledge with school students. The students participated in activities and experiments giving provocation for their thinking about scientists as problem solvers. Thank you to our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Nigel Coutts, for the organisation of this event.

Athletics Carnival

Last Wednesday a group of very excited Yr 2 students attended the Junior School Athletics Carnival at the Sydney International Athletics Stadium at Homebush, to compete in the 8yr age division. Congratulations to Giorgio Gazzilli, Luca Gazzilli, Gaby Grant, Cameron Livingstone, Anay Mishra Mall, Jasmine Smith Jenna Condous, Mima Forster, Otis Gait, Zac Holgate, Emily Smith, Hugo Steadman, Mackenzie Willis, Ethan Condous and Joshua Svensson. A very special mention to Hugo and Zac who were overall age champions on the day. Thank you to Mr Adrian Carter, the Junior School and HPE staff who supported the Yr 2s and helped deliver an exceptional Carnival.

It was wonderful to see everyone in their jeans and denim last Friday helping Redlands support Jeans for Genes Day. Students were asked to make a gold coin donation and the Preparatory School managed to raise a very impressive $370. Thank you for your generosity.

A Life Cycle

On Monday Yr 2 students were very excited to find incubators containing eggs in their classrooms. Over the coming weeks, students will be able to observe the growth and development of the chicks as they move through the different stages of the early part of their life cycle. This wonderful opportunity for an interactive approach to learning, helps students consolidate the Fur and Feathers Unit of Inquiry for Science.

“We have learned that the chick breaks out of the egg shell with its egg tooth, and we got to watch it happen!” James and Juliet

“After the chicks spend 24 hours in the incubator, they can be moved to the brooding box. They have a heat lamp, food and water in the brooding box, to help them survive.” Ina and Henry

Jump Rope for Heart Workshops

On Tuesday, the Yr 1 and 2 students participated in Jump Rope for Heart workshops with their buddy class in the Junior School. The students enthusiastically practiced skipping with their buddy and learnt new skipping tricks. A highlight for most students was using the long skipping ropes with their Junior School buddy to see how many skips they could attain. Kindergarten and Preschool students will take part in their Jump Rope for Heart workshops on Friday.

Thank you to all the parents who have signed up for Jump Rope for Heart and have begun fundraising. If you have yet to do so, please scan the QR code below. An extra big thank you to the parents who have participated in our One Minute Skip Off challenge. If you think you are up to the challenge, Mrs Chipper will be timing parents before school each day! The Prep students are so enthusiastic and have truly embraced any opportunity to skip throughout the day.

Security Reminder

If you are on the School premises between 8.20am and 2.45pm and have received permission from the School, could you please enter through the Prep Reception only and collect a Visitor’s Badge. Throughout the day, if you would like to drop off any school items to your child, please do so at the Prep Reception, where staff will make sure it is delivered. This also applies if you are collecting your child for an external appointment or if they are unwell. Arriving to school after 8.20am and taking your child into class or to the Library is not permitted, and is a disruption to students and staff who have already begun morning preparations. If you arrive after 8.20am, Mrs Hunt or Mrs Rosling will gladly sign students into school and if needed, escort them to their class. Your cooperation is sincerely appreciated in this matter.

Grandparents / Special Friends Day

We are delighted to invite Special Friends and Grandparents to Redlands on Friday 17 August.

This year’s topic is Find Your Treasure and students are invited to dress up with a pirate theme or any other treasure idea they have in mind. A reminder that students need to be able to use the play equipment and participate in Sports lessons and therefore sandshoes and appropriate clothing is a requirement.

The Redlands Spring Fair will be taking place on 15 September and is a great day full of fun for everyone, most importantly the children. Seniors Sports Day

Our annual Sports Day will be held on Wednesday 15 August from 11.15am on the Prep School oval. This is an exciting time for the children to share their sporting achievements with parents and friends. All parents are very welcome to come along to cheer on your child’s class and see the dedicated PE Department in action, very enthusiastically assisted by our Yr 6 children. The event is due to finish at approximately 12.30pm. If you would like to take your child home after this exciting morning, please advise your class teacher before you leave. The Junior School Canteen will be open for parents to enjoy snacks and coffee.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

If this is not your child’s regular Preschool day, they are more than welcome to come in and take part in the Concert. As a reminder, all students are to wear their school uniform.

Transition Gold Visit Wild Life Sydney Zoo

Our Transition Gold students enjoyed a visit to Wild Life Sydney on Wednesday. They had a fantastic day investigating native Australian animals, as well as snakes, spiders and mini beasts. One of the highlights was definitely watching Rocky the 4m long saltwater crocodile. Rocky spends most of his time dozing in his large pool. It was wonderful to be able to view him from under the water. A big thank you to all the teachers for their hard work in organising the day, and a special thank you to two of our class parents, Gabi Ratcliffe and Maria MacJohn, for joining us and making this excursion possible.

Football

Boys Football

Our Boys Football teams played against St Spyridon in the last round of Football at home for the 2018 season. Of the seven teams that played against St Spyridon, we came away with three wins, one draw and three losses. Our improvement shows that we belong back in Division 1 in our Boys Football program. Despite being down 2-0 at half time, our 1sts Boys managed to regroup and end the game with a score line of 2-2. A special mention to both the 13A and 14A Boys teams who came away with 3-0 and 2-0 wins respectively. Our 13C Boys also had a stellar game, travelling to St Pius and leaving with a huge 6-0 win.

Girls Football

With all of our girls teams heading to the Central Coast, we had a great result with three of the four teams coming home with a win. Our 1sts Girls had a close match, sneaking away with a 3-2 win, our 2nds Girls continued their great run this season with a 3-1 win. Our Junior As once again dominated possession the entire game to come away with a 6-2 win. The Junior B Girls played well but unfortunately had a tough 3-0 loss to a very strong Central Coast B team.

End of Season Football Presentation

Please see the details below for the End of Season Presentation Evening:
Date: Friday 14 September
Time: 6.30pm for a 7pm start

Hockey

Last weekend saw our Girls 1sts head to Chev where despite the girls dominating play, they were held to a 0-0 draw but retain 2nd place on the ladder. The Girls 2nds and 3rds teams played against SACS where the 2nds took out a strong 4-1 win while the 3rds had a strong 1-1 draw in what was an exciting game.

This weekend’s game details can be found in Redlands Rhino.

Netball

We have a number of our teams across the ISA Competitions in a battle for finals, with this weekend being the last round of the ISA competition (two weeks of finals to follow). We have some teams looking to secure finals births. Our 1sts take on Chevalier College at 9.00am at NBISC, with a victory guaranteeing them 3rd spot. Our 2nds walked away with a solid victory last weekend. They head into the BYE this weekend knowing they have secured 3rd spot also. Our 3rds have had an indifferent season this year, with a number of close losses meaning they will just miss out on the Finals. They take on a St Spyridon team this weekend, with a victory meaning they jump Spyridon on the table. Our 4ths are travelling to the Blue Mountains this weekend, sitting comfortably in 4th spot, a victory over BMGS means they will finish equal on points and jump to 3rd. Our Senior 5ths have a big game this weekend against Barker College at the Brickpit. A victory means they will jump Barker into 4th spot and just sneak into the Finals. Our Inter A team have a guaranteed Finals birth which is great to see. They have worked extremely hard this year, and are looking to finish the season strongly against Chevalier this weekend. Our Inter B teams had a strong win last week against CCGS, and with a BYE this weekend they find themselves in the Finals also! Our Inter C teams have a tough assignment this weekend, travelling to Barker to take on the top of the table Barker team. A victory will guarantee them a finals spot, otherwise they will need to rely on some results to go their way. Our Junior A team has only dropped one game all year and are looking for a strong finish against Chevalier this weekend to secure top spot in the Junior A division. Our Junior B team have not lost a game all year, they will also be looking to finish strong in the lead up to Finals. Good luck to all teams this weekend!

Our NSNA competition still has a few more weeks to go, with two regular season rounds, and then a three week Finals series. Redlands is in a strong position across a number of our teams. We will have a full recap of the NSNA teams in next week’s Note Day.

We had some exciting guests at our trainings this week. Tayla Davies and Jamie Lee Price from the GWS Giants came along to run some Netfit HIIT sessions! The girls seemed like they really enjoyed the change up in training with the Senior 1sts, Inter A and Junior A running a session last week, our NSNA Yr 7 Girls on Tuesday afternoon and the NSNA Yr 8 Girls on Thursday afternoon.

Save the Date

The 2018 Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 13 September at the Norths Leagues Club to celebrate the 2018 Netball Season for both the ISA and NSNA competitions. The trybooking link will be emailed shortly with more information.

Code of Conduct

As we roll into the last rounds and finals for both the ISA competition and the NSNA competition I thought it might be timely to remind everyone about the ISA and Redlands Code of Conduct. Any communication with the umpires and opposition players must be respectful. Please make sure that as players and parents you are aware of the Code of Conduct.

Rowing

All preliminary information for the upcoming season can be found on the Rowing page of Redlands Pulse. This will cover both the current Yr 7 and 8 students (Junior Rowing) and current Yr 9, 10 and 11 students (Senior Rowing). Information includes training days/times/locations along with camp and regatta details.

If students or families have any questions, please contact James Petering 0413764446.

Rugby

The Redlands 1stXV left a sobering loss last week behind responding with a comprehensive 78-0 win against BMGS. The game started slowly, with the Redlands forwards not winning clean balls in our rucks and allowing the BMGS players to spoil any of our attacking opportunities. Against the run of possession Redlands were able to score an incredible try off a high ball kick from Cameron Pascoe; this seemed to kick start our attack as we immediately followed up with two more quick tries.

The second half started with Blue Mountains trying to grind back into the game but controlled Rugby from our forwards. This allowed us to again get on top of our opposition early. Our defence was brutal with all Redlands players putting their shoulders into the contacts.

Ultimately it was close to the perfect game for Redlands. Harrison Blackall must be mentioned running in four tries for the match but Alec ‘Chicka’ Vigneault also was a highlight, his defensive efforts were amazing and also scored the perfect team try to finish the match.

We now look ahead to Week 1 of the Finals against old rivals Oxley. Well done boys.

Skipping

Congratulations to Maia Healey (Yr 7) who spent the last few weeks in China at the World Skipping Championships. Maia and her team placed 4th overall in the Double Dutch Pair events which is a fantastic achievement.

Summer Sport Choices

Students have been emailed the link for their Summer Sport choices. All students have until Sunday 12 August to complete their 2018/19 Summer Sport registrations.

Tennis

Congratulations to all Redlands players on the weekend. It was an absolute nail biter in Division 1 and Division 6. Team 1 showed some true grit and determination to defeat St Pius by a single game (4-4 / 36-35). Team 2 continued their winning run into the last few matches of the season beating St Pius 7-1. Team 3 fought hard for the victory and managed to overcome St Pius (4-4 / 39-34). Team 4 continued to dominate their division with a 6-2 win over St Pius.

Weightlifting

Congratulations to Sean Russell (Yr 12), who came away with a silver medal at the National Powerlifting Championships in the 74kg weight class. In what was a mammoth effort, at one point it looked like Sean could walk away with Gold, unfortunately this was not to be. Congratulations Sean!

Waterpolo

Our Yr 7 Girls Waterpolo had a bye last week, but are still looking for a few extra players. If you are a interested in playing in the Yr 7 Girls team on Friday nights, please see Mr Ellis in the Sports Department.

Our Boys are continuing to improve and with each team playing two games on Friday night, the boys were out to impress. After some tough starts against the St Augustine’s they were able to bounce back with the Blue team taking a strong 12-0 win over Pittwater. The Gold team unfortunately went down 3-4 to St Luke’s.

Head of Secondary School Sport

Junior Sport

IPSHA Sports

Redlands teams in IPSHA competitions play their final matches this weekend.

There are a few minor changes to the original schedule:
Yr 4 Red Football now play on Field D at Shore playing fields, Northbridge at 8.45am
Yr 4 Blue Football now play on Field D at Shore playing fields, Northbridge at 8.00am
Yr 3 Red Football now play Knox at Ireland Field, Knox Prep Campus at 9.30am
Yr 3 Blue Football now play at Koola Park, East Killara at 8.15am

NSNA Netball

Redlands 14 dropped a tight game last week but are showing some serious improvement. Battling to within two points, the girls are really coming into their own.

Football

Our footballers wrap up their season this weekend at away venues. It was very pleasing to watch our Yr 3 and 4 footballers playing at Macquarie University last weekend. Our Yr 3 teams play with such tremendous heart, it’s hard to take your eyes off. The Red team won comfortably, despite being wasteful in front of goal. Yr 4 teams took on Trinity and both had great wins, playing attacking Football with some real flair.

Rugby

Two weeks in a row on long bus trips for our Rugby boys has seen the two best matches of the season! Tudor House got the shock of their lives when our boys burst out of the blocks in a windy and freezing Moss Vale. Despite going down by just two tries, the lads enter their last match against Trinity in high spirits, showing huge improvement in their two matches so far this term. Our Sevens team split their matches with a win and a loss and if they can tighten up their tackling, they will go a long way to winning both in this week’s final round.

Athletics Carnival

Cowper took out the Junior School Athletics Carnival for their fifth consecutive year! In contrast to last year’s deluge, this year’s Carnival played out in amazing Sydney Winter weather which had all of our students jumping onto the track to compete in record numbers. Cowper again managed the participation best, dominating and winning by almost 200 points. Congratulations to our Age Champions and Runners Up and to all athletes selected for the Redlands team. The Redlands team members are posted on the noticeboard and will go on to represent Redlands at the HICES Carnival on 28 August.

They will travel to Los Angeles for high level meetings and workshops as part of Screen Australia’s third Talent USA contingent in September 2018 in partnership with the Australian Writers’ Guild. Since leaving Redlands, the sisters started their careers in radio and have gone on to become factual, comedy and musical creators. Their debut series Growing Up Gracefully aired on the ABC in 2017 with a tongue-in-cheek look at life as an Australian woman.
