The Lux Project

There’s a biblical proverb that says ‘a merry heart doth good like medicine’ and there’s decades of modern research that links music making with well-being. Pictured this week is our Combined Concert Band who meet and rehearse on Wednesday afternoons. Look at those merry faces!? We’re convinced that our lockdown lives are being enhanced by our continued commitment to our music making.

Our Senior Campus Combined Band, String and Choral ensembles embarked on a large scale collaborative project this week. We are excited to have commenced a new massed Choral and Orchestral piece, Lux Æterna – dubbed The Lux Project.  We will continue to develop this in the months ahead with the hope to share this with our community later in the year. These three ensemble streams will be Zooming in their regular rehearsal times for the remainder of the term.

Learning Music from Home

All extracurricular and cocurricular Music lessons, classes and ensembles continue in their now established home-learning patterns. Conductors communicate directly with P-12 ensembles when they wish for a Zoom session be scheduled in support of the weekly resource uploads to stage-specific learning platforms (See Saw, Google Classroom & iLearn).

Redlands Composition Competition

This year, the submission panel were overwhelmed by the sheer number and outstanding quality of composition entries for this year’s Redlands EP/Composition Competition (a.k.a. ‘Comp Comp’ or ‘Comp2‘ as it’s been affectionately dubbed by students). It thrills us to know that our young Redlanders are finding their sound and focussing what they want to say as musicians, and exploring songwriting and composition as a vehicle to communicate and express these ideas. The future is very bright in this regard.

The selected Composition Competition finalists will have their compositions developed, recorded and studio produced for ‘drop’ next year as part of the 2021/2022 Redlands EP.

Sadly we were restricted by being able to offer just 7 places in this year’s competition, with these places far outweighed by the number of meritorious submissions. Variety of offerings and styles played a key factor in the final selection process. All entrants are encouraged to keep honing their compositional craft and to submit again next year. Congratulations to all who submitted.

2021 Winners

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Redlands EP will feature works by:

Etta Buggy-Axton (7)
Phoebe Barnett (10)
Jamison Houchell (10)
Eden Borrie (11)
Hailey Kim (11)
Omar Rihani (11)
Callum Wardman-Browne (11)

Feedback on all submissions will be released to the iLearn Music Auditions page by Friday 3rd September.

Other Date Changes

Please keep your eye on the Music Events dates on Pulse in case of adjustments in the weeks and months ahead, in light of our rapidly changing context. As previously noted, the Senior Instrumental Competition that was scheduled for 13 September is looking to be rescheduled as restrictions allow. We will advise as able.

AMEB & St Cecilia Examinations

The Music Department continues to advocate for our students with regard to their forthcoming Examination enrolments. Though some students have chosen to withdraw their candidacy for the 2021 year in light of the current climate, many students are busily preparing for their adapted examination forum or creating home videos of their repertoire for online upload! Please reach out to Mrs Jacqueline McGlade who is liaising with these professional bodies on our behalf.
