Lessons from Lockdown: Shadowing a Student for a Day

by Matthew Bentley, Head of Teaching and Learning (P-12)

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb in his skin and walk around in it.”  Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird

One of the most powerful ideas conveyed in Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird is the huge impact that empathy can have on our ability to understand and appreciate the experiences of others. While her story was published within the context of the 1960s US Civil Rights movement, her message still resonates today on a global level with hundreds of millions of people during our global pandemic. In fact, her message was a catalyst for me to spend a day with Yr 9 student, Lawrence Jones and his classmates. I wanted to empathise by learning more about what the world of Remote Learning is like from the perspective of our students. It was also another way of amplifying our focus on student voice at Redlands.

Day Commences: Thursday 19 August 2021.  At 8:20am I found myself, along with Lawrence and his peers, in a Visual Arts lesson with Mr Yuncken.  After a few minutes on lesson directions, we were promptly moved into Zoom breakout rooms and started to learn how to manipulate images of the Learning Hub in Photoshop, with the aim to create our own surrealist artworks. At the lesson’s end it was time for a quick stretch break.

9:15am – Next up was Geography with Ms Stewart. In this lesson we learnt about geographical social inequalities across Sydney and the ‘avocado’ and ‘Red Rooster’ lines that socio-economically divide our city. Quizzes were taken, student thinking recorded in the chat pane, documentaries viewed; all in our Zoom classroom.

10:30am – After recess, it was time for Tutor Group assembly. On entering the Zoom room we were greeted with the sounds of K’naan’s upbeat tune “Wavin’ Flag”. Ms Yanson, Year 9 Year Advisor asked all of us to reflect on the positive message of the lyrics and how we might be able to make a personal connection. Then we joined our breakout rooms for small group discussion. Inside the room students chatted, mixed ingredients under the direction of Ms Anson and created homemade lava lamps in glass jars. Creative yes, social yes, high-tech lamps – maybe not! (lucky I had food colouring and vegetable oil on hand.)

11:05am – Period 3 was English. More scene-setting music upon entry. This time it was the haunting voice of Billie Holiday’s ‘Strange Fruit’. Facilitated by Ms Rothwell students were quick to explore connections with the lyrics and ideas by discussing Langston Hughes’ poem ‘Let America Be America Again’ as part of the study of protest poetry. Now, inside a Zoom breakout room with Lawrence and his peers, we discussed our ideas and questions, then as a group developed a Google share document, summarising our research on the poet’s context, use of language and overarching ideas.

12:00pm – last period before lunch. Maths was next with Mr Ockenden. Today was an online assessment. Using Zoom and our LMS iLearn, assessment papers were released, questions answered and tests completed. Phones were used to capture images, then to upload papers electronically, ready for marking. While I love technology, I felt like a clunky “digital immigrant” among a class of “digital natives”.

12:45pm. I ate my lunch and thought about the afternoon.  It is quiet at home – not like the usual cacophony of sounds and student voices at Redlands campus – I reminisce.

1:35pm – Post lunch, and for our final lesson for the day, PDHPE. I could tell that Lawrence, who I know is a bit of basketball aficionado, was looking forward to it. Today was a practical lesson with Ms Howard. We focussed on the concept of wellbeing and recharging both the mind and the body. Something we all need more of during lockdown! We received a learning matrix and were given the choice of designing our own program. Yoga, meditation, Pilates, stretching, home workouts, running, walking and backyard sport were all on offer and eagerly taken up by members of the class, myself included.

After I’d returned from my brisk wellbeing walk, I had one more Zoom meeting to make before the end of the day. This one was with Lawrence. I asked him lots of questions about his feelings about Remote Learning. What more can we do to improve? How is he finding the workload and amount of home learning? How is he travelling in terms of motivation and wellbeing? What does he like most about Remote Learning?  What can we do to further support our students?

Many of the types of questions I asked Lawrence were akin to the ones that we’d asked in the Junior and Secondary School surveys in recent weeks. What was different, was that by shadowing, or to paraphrase Atticus Finch ‘stepping into someone else’s shoes’ I’d developed a much deeper and authentic experience of remote learning for our students. I was reminded that a student day is tiring. That not seeing friends in person is challenging, especially for teenagers. That Zoom fatigue is real. I was reminded of the importance to make time on a regular basis for physical exercise. Extended time inside is a side-effect of lockdown that no one loves. And finally, that too much home learning is not helpful when you’ve been in front of a screen all day.

I was reminded that productive pedagogy and the passion of our teachers needs to drive student learning, not just during Remote Learning, but always.  I was reminded that focusing on deeper learning, complex ideas and collaborative practices in our classrooms is so much more important than just getting through ‘lots of content’.  Finally, I was reminded that the grit, resilience, and motivation demonstrated by Lawrence, his peers and our teachers can overcome the challenges of COVID. Together we are able to develop a positive growth mindset and continue developing 21st Century competencies in our students.

Thank you to Lawrence, his peers and his classroom teachers for sharing your day with me. I very much enjoyed seeing your learning world from the other side of the screen.

Update on Reunions

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, reunions planned for this term have been postponed and will be rescheduled for late 2021 or 2022. We are in contact with reunion groups to discuss alternative plans.

Georgia Edwards, 2000 School Captain, has been planning their 20 Year reunion with us since last year. Georgia’s parents, Kim and Jennifer Edwards, were long serving members in our community, including their active involvement in the RPFA and Kim being a member of the Redlands Board for many years. The Edwards Auditorium in the Music Centre was named after them to acknowledge their long-term service and contribution to Redlands.

Postcard from Georgia Edwards (Class of 2000)

After leaving school I spent 7 years at uni, first doing a Science degree and then moved on to Medical school. I became a medical intern in 2008 and worked for a couple of years before deciding to travel the world with my partner for 13 months. Returned to Australia in 2011 and re-entered the medical workforce, and also got married that year. Fast forward through many years, many exams and many maternity leaves; I am now a consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician in both public and private settings based in Newcastle, still with my patient and long-suffering engineer husband, and a mother to 3 wonderful girls (7, 4 and 1.5). Like everyone, life is hectic, a juggle and sometimes a struggle currently, but very full and I am very conscious of how lucky I am.

Read, listen, talk, observe and be thankful

The extra time afforded us during the lockdown has meant more dedicated time to read, listen, talk and observe. In many ways, this forced slowing down of our lives has provided space for thought, wonderment, contemplation and reflection. With my students and colleagues, I have been reading books, listening to podcasts, observing nature (physical and human) and then welcoming any opportunity I am offered, to talk about this with others.

Yr 7 are currently in the final throes of their Term 3 English assessments, producing a monologue, performed as a fairytale character, who has something to say. Last night, I watched a few snippets of the creations of students in my Yr 7 class and was overjoyed to see them so unselfconsciously inhabit a character, in full costume, in their backyard. Their efforts have brought me a lot of joy and I have delighted in their capacity to engage with this task. They are a creative and thoughtful group of students who have grown so much this year.

This week I have also been thankful for the opportunity to talk with colleagues. Each morning, just before 8.00am, the Secondary School Leadership Team meet via Zoom to discuss the day, reflect on the previous one and catch up. Seeing the bright faces of my colleagues each morning certainly puts me in a positive frame of mind for the day ahead and lessens the impact of disconnection at this time.

I also value those personal moments of being alone. Taking a walk, having the house to myself (rarely) or making a lightning run to Woolworths, provides opportunity to listen to podcasts and step out of my own reality. Recently I listened to a Conversations episode which featured Steve Biddulph. It was an enlightening conversation and I highly recommend it, for the various topics he covers about himself and others. One aspect which interested me was his metaphor for the mind as a four-storey mansion. Biddulph uses this metaphor as way to represent the architecture of the mind.

Broadly speaking, the first floor represents the body; our need to eat and sleep and the physical impacts on wellbeing. He calls it ‘our super-sensing machine’. It’s raw and real. It’s where our gut instinct is located. The second level represents our emotions. It’s colourful and alive. Emotions are the power source for living. But, he reminds us, people can get stuck and lost in these emotions and on this floor. So, we’ve evolved a third floor and this is where our thoughts are. Our capacity to reason and think, and find clarity is enabled on this third floor. He reminds us that If you have a friend who is super-emotive you know how tiresome this can be. You want them to be able to move to the third floor and consider their emotions more rationally – to find solutions to their feelings. However, there are issues with being stuck too much on the third floor too. He confidently asserts that a lot of men get stuck on this floor – this floor of thinking. Biddulph tells Fidler that when stuck on this floor, we really need to stop talking and stop thinking and go downstairs and identify what is really driving us – the emotion, that is.

And then there is the fourth floor. He describes this as a roof terrace open to the stars and identifies that this is where our spiritual world is located – where we get outside of our bodies and focus on others. This might be the garden, the surf, stars, another world, nature, cosmos, or other people. He describes this floor as being a place where we move from being focused on our own world to being focused on another’s. This is a freeing realisation, according to Biddulph, because we can only function when we have the lights on all four floors. Being able to access all four floors provides a wonderful mobility and spaciousness within our own mind. We can travel up and down at will and as we do that we are a unified system. Our mind will unify, what we believe in, what we feel, what we think and what our gut is telling us, will begin to point the same way, and our life will never be the same.

For Biddulph, this spiritual moment came when he memorialised a group of women and children who drowned seeking asylum in Australia. This memorial took four years to build and involved 300 hundred pieces of art work, which now stands on the Canberra lakeshore, as a memorial to each individual who drowned – big poles for adults and little poles for the children, with their names on – and Biddulph says, “that was the most spiritual thing I have ever done in my life”.

It seems like we are all conscious of identifying the special and the unique at the moment, and finding ways to acknowledge and celebrate this. What’s been interesting about the extra ‘space’ afforded to us in the pandemic, and this lockdown in particular, is the chance to reflect on these matters and then be able to explore them with others. This is indeed, a privilege.

Week 9

Wellbeing Day on Wednesday September 9 is a day dedicated to strengthening psychological health

Redlands Secondary School Wellbeing Day

Wellbeing days are a good opportunity to bring awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing for young people. To enrich our pastoral programs and to recognise the incredible engagement and diligence of our students during Remote Learning, Wednesday 8 September will be a dedicated Zoom-Free Lesson Day with a focus on student wellbeing.

Activities on this day will provide simple and effective ways to support a healthy mind and healthy body by linking to the 5 Ways to Wellbeing:

  1. Social connection
  2. Being active
  3. Continued learning
  4. Being aware
  5. Helping others

‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ introduces five simple and effective ways to improve psychological and emotional health, based on extensive international research.

During the Redlands Secondary School Wellbeing Day, students will work in teams of their choosing to navigate a packed schedule involving a series of self-directed challenges and activities. Each student will have access to a Wellbeing Day booklet which outlines their daily schedule and activities.

We know that a healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body for our overall wellbeing. Like physical fitness, our young people can strengthen their psychological health in lots of small day-to-day ways. This will help them live a happier and more fulfilled lives as well as help them cope with stress, particularly during this period of lockdown.

The Week 9 Timetable can be found here.

Friday Night Live

The Arts Captains are organising a “Friday Night Live” event on Friday 10 September at 5pm, with ‘LIVE’ performances. Streamed via Zoom, we hope to showcase several students from each Year performing a 2-3 minute act.

Students wishing to be involved should submit a video of their act to the Friday Night Live assignment page in the iLearn Student Leaders course. It can be Vocal, Theatre, Instrumental, Dance, Comedy, Rap, Poetry reading – anything to showcase your talent and creativity.

Performers will then be chosen to take part on the night. Unfortunately, we can only have several acts per year group but we will try to build a diverse, entertaining and amazing repertoire of performances so get as creative as possible! Submissions will remain open until next Monday.

Thanks to our Arts Captains, Maddie and Felix, for bringing the community together!

Mullets for Mental Health

From 1 September, a number of Secondary School students, along with Mr Jack Gooding our Director of Coaching: Rugby and Athletic Development, will be shaving in mullets in support of the Black Dog Institute and Mullets for Mental Health. https://www.teamblackdog.org.au/fundraisers/jackgooding/mulletsformentalhealth

Mr Gooding will be documenting the whole process, including the cutting of his the hair and the progress towards a true flowing mullet across the whole month. Along with a blog detailing the process, there will also be a number of ‘invitational barbers’ who will give their thoughts around mental well-being as well as offering their assistance in manicuring the mullet.

This is a wonderful opportunity to support a charity and have some fun during this lockdown period.

Library Letters

a message from our Secondary School Librarian Ms Bronwyn Curtis

Reading for pleasure is excellent for both education and wellbeing. We are glad to be able to lend “real” books via our COVID-safe method. Students visit the catalogue and reserve a book they wish to borrow. Then they email seniorlib@redlands.nsw.edu.au to secure the loan.

We then bring the book/s to the Gerard Street Gate. Just ring 9968 9839 or 9969 9838 to tell us when you are able to engage in a contactless-pick up.

You may be a parent who has students across both campuses. If you are picking up books from the Arnold Library in the Junior School, we are happy to (if given notice) to drop our books over there so you only have one pick up.

Students wishing to borrow from the library have two alternatives: eBooks via SORA or print books.  If they wish to borrow “real” books, they can browse our new fiction here.

Got your holiday reading sorted yet?

“Old Worlds” or historical novels are particularly good at providing perspective. There have been many times in history when groups or individuals have faced challenges with courage and resilience.  Obviously, we learn a great deal of factual and contextual information from historical fiction.

“But if we want to meet the dead looking alive we turn to art.” (Hilary Mantel)

Historical fiction breathes life into the people of the past. Hilary Mantel’s novels about Thomas Cromwell beginning with Wolf Hall are a great read and an insight into the turbulent times of Henry VIII.  Another wonderful novel is Suite Française by Irene Nemirovsky. This novel lay untouched in a suitcase for fifty years. When sorting out her mother’s papers, the author’s older daughter, Denise, decided to read what she thought was her mother’s journal and discovered an unpublished, unfinished manuscript.  This novel is at the living, breathing intersection of history and is highly recommended.

Some of our favourite historical novels (from the physical books) cover all eras from

Death Comes as the End (Agatha Christie) a murder mystery set in 2000 BC Ancient Egypt to All our Shimmering Skies (Trent Dalton) set in Darwin during World War II.

Want to use SORA?

  • Download the Sora app
  • Locate Redlands Library
  • Enter ID (Student number
  • Enter password (sora)

We are building this collection and very much miss the chats with students that help us to choose books. If your child want us to purchase an item (either as a physical or an eBook) they have only to send us an email to seniorlib@redlands.nsw.edu.  The Overdrive platform that hosts the Sora app has many books. For example, I have just finished We are Wolves winner from The CBCA Younger Readers Shortlist. This novel by Katrina Nannestad, is available both as a physical book and on Sora.  This plot follows a family of Germans fleeing from the Russian soldiers in the closing days of World War 2. Liesel, Otto and their baby sister Mia display courage and resilience as they struggle to survive and find their parents.

“This powerful and compelling novel is the perfect balance of light and dark: challenges are met with courage, desperation with resourcefulness, cruelty with kindness and the result is both moving and inspiring.” (Frances Watts Author of The Peony Lantern)

Here are some old favourites to recommend to your children available via Sora.

Laurie Hale Anderson   Chains
Karen Cushman,   Catherine Called Birdy
Annie Goetzinger Girl in Dior
Sonya Hartnett  The Midnight Zoo
Suzy Zail   The Wrong Boy
Markus Zusak The Book Thief.
Jerry Spinelli  Milkweed

So, read to escape – or read to remember how resilient and resourceful human beings are.

Pause to Pray…

If you ever want to be encouraged just listen to the prayers of children. They are invariably honest, heartfelt and open. Compassionate and kind and all that is beautiful in the world. Simultaneously they can also at times be wildly amusing, totally inappropriate and awkward. I suspect either way God is delighted to hear them.

You may be reading this as a person who prays often, never prays or somewhere in between. This week we invite you to dip your toe into the ocean of prayer or dive deep and refresh your commitment to pray often or to keep our ocean analogy going – perhaps this time you would prefer to watch from the shore. Whatever your connection to prayer is, it is important to note that the call to connect with God is always there and the welcome is assured.

A Year 4 student in response to the Parable of the Prodigal Son recently thought that the image that best suited the story was a door. The door is the entrance to God’s love with a sign that reminds people that this door is always open.

This is a good image to picture as we begin to pray. The door is always open.

Romans 12:12 reminds us to  “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” These verses are nestled in the context of a Chapter of the Bible where we are called to love in action and remind us of the joy that can come from knowing God. Prayer is one way we can care for others. Spending time talking to God about others invariably connects us not only to God but to each other.

While obviously Jesus is the master teacher where prayer is concerned. This week let’s also consider how children pray to give us a few tips too.

Children pray like this:

  1. Relationally – it is to someone who hears them not just random positive statements or wishes. Dear God, opening up a conversation.
  2. Relevant – They always talk to God about what matters to them and others right then and there.
  3. Rich – With gratitude and appreciation

So no matter if you pray at church, home, a nature walk or even in the midst of helping your child log onto their learning this week – pray.

We will pray too – that you would know the peace and comfort and joy in your individual circumstance.

As always please let us know if we can pray for you and your family or assist you in any way.

Welcome Back

This week we welcome back our IB cohort on Wednesday and HSC candidates on Thursday. Alongside the opportunity for students to reconnect with their peers and teachers, we hope that Yr 12 2021 take the outcomes of Trial Examinations in their stride. As results and feedback for specific subjects arrive, please help your young adult make use of the experience in all of its outcomes. Where there is joy and relief, investigate what worked. Where there is disappointment, there is potential. The purpose of the Trial Examinations is to provide students the practical opportunity to consolidate and refine their study habits and examination technique, along with concrete data on which aspects of content and or approach might be adjusted. A good starting point to evaluate and understand both success and areas for development is the marking criteria for each of the subjects.

Dr Prue Salter

Next Tuesday, 7th September from 10-30am to 11:30am Dr Prue Salter will meet with our Yr 12 students via Zoom to discuss next steps after the recent Trial Examinations. Dr Salter will offer students strategies for maintaining motivation as well as techniques to refine their approach to revision, as we move into the next weeks and prepare for final examinations.

Wellbeing Wednesday – Week 9

On Wednesday 8 September, Redlands Secondary students will spend the day with their Year Groups  engaging in a series of wellbeing activities. While Yr 12 will not be participating in this day in the same way as Yr 7-11, we encourage them to engage in some form of self-care throughout Wednesday. In addition, there will be no formal classes for Yr 12 on this day. Instead, students can use the time to reach out to their teachers for their 1:1 feedback conversations regarding the Trial results and best paths forward.

Friday Night Live – Week 9

Our Arts Captains, Maddison Hunt and Felix Abraham, are organising a “Friday Night Live” on 10 September at 5pm. Performances will be streamed via Zoom and Redlands is hoping to showcase several students from each Year performing a 2-3 minute act.

Students wishing to be involved should submit a video of their act to the Friday Night Live assignment page in the iLearn Student Leaders course. The performance can be vocal, theatre, instrumental, dance, comedy, rap,  poetry reading – anything to showcase your talent and creativity.

Performers will then be chosen to take part on the night. We are hoping to build a diverse, entertaining and amazing repertoire of performances, so get as creative as possible! Submissions will remain open until Monday 6 September.

Thank you to Maddie and Felix for coming up with this initiative to bring the community together.

Yr 11 Examinations

Students were informed this week that due to the NSW Premier’s recent announcement regarding return to school for Yr 11 on 1 November, the Yr 11 end of year examinations will now take place online through iLearn. There is a webinar scheduled for Wednesday 15 September at 6pm to provide further details, and parents should have received an email to invite them and their children to this event. The webinar will be recorded for those unable to attend on the evening. We are confident that these examinations will work well, in particular due to the recent successful experience of the Yr 12 Trial Examinations.

Camp

Yr 11 were also informed this week of the exciting news that Camp will now take place early Term 1 2022, from 7-11 February, based out of our High Country Campus in Jindabyne. Many of the activities will be similar to those already offered to students and this camp was a great success when it was run this year at a similar time for the current Yr 12, who immensely enjoyed themselves.

Wear it Purple Day

Yr 10 embraced Wear it Purple Day last Friday which is a day on which schools, workplaces and organisations across the country wear purple to raise awareness for a variety of LGBTQ+ issues such as discrimination and bullying, and to celebrate diversity. Yr 10 students throughout the day updated their zoom with a ‘Wear it Purple’ zoom background to acknowledge the significance of this day. Ms Dalton’s 10 Roseby Red completed a Kahoot on the History and right of the LGBTQ+ community in Australia and Internationally.

Minus 18 who initiated the ‘Wear it Purple Day’ is an organisation based in Victoria, which provides support to young queer people across Australia, by hosting events to create a sense of community, inclusion and acceptance. They furthermore provide education and training to workplaces and schools (including Redlands!) and have a great website with lots of information for both young people and adults.

Welcome Fedora!

Fedora Hamori joined the Yr 10 cohort this week. She is joining Redlands, along with her sister Sara (Yr 8) all the way from Austria. A big thank you to all the students in McDouall Blue who did an amazing job welcoming  Fedora to the Redlands Community with the assistance of Mr Fabian Byrne.

Mullets for Mental Health

Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health has encouraged some of our Yr 10 students to shape and grow a mullet for the month of September to raise much-needed funds for mental health research. Fundraising for this wonderful cause allows better research into the early detection, prevention and treatment of common mental health disorders.

I have set the target of $2000 for Year 10 however we would love to fundraise more.

If you would like to contribute to one of the students who has ‘styled-up’ a mullet, please access the team through: https://www.teamblackdog.org.au/fundraiser/RedlandsYear1020215428

Friday Night Live!

The Arts Captains Maddie Hunt and Felix Abrahams are organising a “Friday Night Live” event on Friday 10 September at 5pm, with ‘LIVE’ performances. Streamed via Zoom, the event hopes to showcase several students from each Year performing a 2-3 minute act.

Unfortunately, there can only be several acts per year group the acts chosen will be diverse, entertaining, and have an amazing repertoire of performances.  It would be great to see Yr 10 be as creative as possible and submit their audition videos!

Submissions will remain open until next Monday.

Redlands Secondary School Wellbeing Day

Wellbeing days are a good opportunity to bring awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing for young people. To enrich our pastoral programs and to recognise the incredible engagement and diligence of our students during remote learning,  Wednesday 8 September will be a dedicated Zoom Free Lesson Day with a focus on student Wellbeing.

Activities on this day will provide simple and effective ways to support a healthy mind and healthy body by linking to the 5 Ways to Wellbeing:

  1. Social connection
  2. Be active
  3. Keep learning
  4. Being aware
  5. Helping others

5 Ways to Wellbeing introduces five simple and effective ways to improve psychological and emotional health that are based on extensive international research.

Thursday 9 September – R U OK? Day

R U OK? Day (Thursday 9 September 2021) is the biggest, best and brightest day of the year. Why? Because it’s an opportunity for our community to connect, start a conversation and make a promise to be there for each other more often. Students will engage in R U OK? Day activities during Tutor Time.

This year the message is: are they really OK? Ask them today.

 How can students get involved?

  1. Wear yellow on Thursday 9 September
  2. Rock a wig or a freshly shaven mullet next week and donate to Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health fundraising drive.  Donation links and further information is in the Yr 9 Pastoral iLearn Page.
  3. Participate in activities throughout the day set by teachers to encourage connection.
  4. Ask a friend are you really ok?

Wear It Purple Day

This week, Redlands supported the Wear it Purple Day, with the 2021 theme focused on the important and necessary conversations we have in our daily life; that centre around sexual orientation and gender identity. It aims to remind people that the issues we reflect on Wear it Purple Day should not only be considered on that particular day, but every day. The importance of pronouns and gender affirmation, as well as the use of inclusive language, is incredibly important.

Cyberbullying and Teenagers

When harassment and intimidation take place online, it’s called cyberbullying. This kind of bullying can be especially hard to deal with, since it can be difficult to control and visible to a large number of people. Chances are your child spends a lot of time online, so it’s important to make sure you know what to do if online behaviour gets nasty. Learn what cyberbullying is, how it impacts young people, and get some tips on how you and your child can deal with it. Click here or here or here for more information.

Spring into Positive Action

This week, it has been wonderful to feel the warmer temperatures as Spring sprang into action and whilst still only remotely, I have felt a positive shift again in energy levels from students and staff aligned with this change of season.

In my assembly this week, I highlighted and celebrated where I had been made aware of students making a difference to the lives of others in our school, within their family or in the wider community and presented all of the students with the challenge of making someone smile each day. Many shared how they might achieve this and we know from evidence that helping others can also benefit our own wellbeing through the physiological changes in the brain associated with happiness. Perhaps this might be something that you can consider as a family too?

Similarly with staff, each month I share the Action for Happiness’ monthly calendar packed with daily actions to promote a happier and more caring society. Self-care September’s focus on remembering to ‘fill our own cups’ is particularly timely and it was a good reminder for our staff. Again, I share this with our families in the hope that it might also strike a chord with you and previous monthly calendars can be found here if you are interested.

Student Leadership

On Wednesday, student agency was in action as some of our Yr 6 students ran sessions during the Prep School’s Wellness Wednesday. It was wonderful to hear from Mrs Breckenridge (Head of Prep School) and other staff about how engaging our Yr 6 students were as we continue to find new ways to utilise Zoom to build connections across the student community and inspire our younger learners.

Our School captains, Alex Heller and Caroline Brown, set the tone for a fun-filled day with an engaging and well-planned virtual Scavenger Hunt. Students scurried on and off screen to find items for categories such as “what makes you happy” and “show us your furry friend, real or not.”

Later in the day, three of our Technology Leaders: Chloe Howard, Jessica Jackson and Eva Simpson, ran a 30-minute ,“Design your own magnet session”. In this time, the girls ably and confidently led Yr 2 students in “demonstrate, make and chat” breakout rooms and the resulting magnet creations and student conversations brought much joy to all.

Borrowing Books from the Arnold Library

We have had a lovely steady stream of students borrowing books from the Arnold Library again under our COVID-safe protocols, which has brought joy to students and our library team has them have lovingly packaged up books. A reminder of the process is outlined below:

  1. Parents should email the Junior School library directly here with book requests/genre.
  2. Our part-time library staff will process requests and package books up to be collected from the table outside the Junior School reception building.
  3. The library staff will confirm via return email the time and date only one parent/child should come to collect their named book package.
  4. At collection, you must wear a mask and sanitise hands at the entry gate.
  5. Returning books will be via the book return drop box only which will be outside the school (again, please wear a mask and sanitise your hands at the gate). Any students currently with library books that they wish to return can do so in this way.

Please note that all book collection times will be outside of arrival and departure times for students of essential workers.

Wellbeing Wednesday

A big thank you to Mrs Clinton, Miss McKenzie, the Music Department, the PE Department, Mr Squires and Madam Merlot for making Prep Wellbeing Wednesday a huge success this week. The idea was to provide our students with some well-deserved self-care and fun activities.

The Redlands Zoom Airwaves were alight as Wellness Wednesday got off to a flying start with our school captains, Alex Heller and Caroline Brown, leading the Prep students on a Scavenger Hunt. This fun and engaging activity had students scrambling on and off screen to find “anything with wheels”, “what makes you happy” and “show us your furry friend, real or not!”  Keeping with the theme of building connections across the school community, three of the Year 6 Technology leaders, Chloe Howard, Jessica Jackson and Eva Simpson, ably coordinated and led a design your own magnet session. Yr 2 students worked in chat and create breakout sessions with one of the Technology Leaders to create and share their designs. Our specialists ran a variety of workshops with our specialist teachers from baking cupcakes, to juggling, practicing yoga, taking the survivor challenge, exploring music and movement, finding their inner superhero and creating French impressionist inspired artworks.

Thank you to Mrs Clinton who coordinated the planning and running of the day, our specialist teachers, the Yr 6 student leaders and our wonderful parent community for supporting your children to enjoy this day of celebrating community and learning.

Cultivating character strengths – Finding our Inner Superhero

A message from our Counsellor, Mr Alessandro Digiacomo

I hosted a workshop yesterday during Prep Wellbeing Wednesday which focused on helping students to find their character strengths (aka inner superpowers!). By character strengths, we mean the inner strengths that hold moral value, such as courage, kindness, bravery, fairness, curiosity, honesty, etc. It was lovely to see so many of the students engaging in conversation and I especially enjoyed seeing the superhero outfits!

As a follow up to the session, I have posted a task on Seesaw that includes a sheet with all 24 character strengths for you to have a look to help you familiarise yourself with the language that we used. As a parent, focusing on your child’s character strengths can help them to see their positive qualities and future potential, which can lead to greater wellbeing. How can we do this? Here are some tips!

  1. Spot the strengths of your own child. What activities do they do just because they love doing them? It’s more than likely they are using a character strength such as creativity.
  2. Get your child to think about the character strengths of characters in books and films, for example, if they like Bluey, you could watch an episode and ask, “Was Bluey brave?”; “How did Bluey show love and kindness?”.
  3. You can use their superheroes too, for example, “How did you show bravery like your superhero?”; “How will you show kindness like your superhero does?”.
  4. Learn about your own character strengths. There’s a survey through the VIA Institute you can complete as an adult on this link here: https://www.viacharacter.org/survey/account/register

Seniors Mini Sports Carnival

The Seniors who have returned to On-Campus learning have enjoyed a mini sports carnival on the basketball courts this week in the glorious sunshine. We worked on our ball skills, jumped and leaped over hurdles, shot goals with bean bags and used scoops to throw and catch balls. It was wonderful to see the children so excited to participate and making new friends. They certainly demonstrated some exceptional skills and had a great deal of fun.

Transition Gold – Seesaw

The move from Storypark to Seesaw has been a successful one for the Transition Class over the last few weeks. The children seem to be really enjoying the content and experiences. Over the coming weeks the Transition Class teachers will be increasing the number of Zoom sessions and timetabling more activities. We hope this is helpful to families and provides the Transition Class children with more structure in their day.

Secondary Sport

Basketball

The 2021/2022 Summer Basketball season has begun! This season we are excited to be using the ‘Sportly’ App to deliver the online basketball content. All students who registered for basketball should have received and email outlining the process to download and create profile for the app. Each week there will be different workouts and challenges to complete via the app, as with all current programs please ensure you are following the NSW COVID Health Guidelines.

Redlands Sport Podcast

Episode 9 of the Redlands Sport Podcast can be found here or via the Secondary School Sport iLearn page (student access only). This past week, Mr Ellis sat down with Redlands staff member Mr Brad Hemopo, speaking about his upbringing in New Zealand and not only where rugby has taken him, but also the amazing life experiences that Brad has had. It is an amazing insight into the man known around the school as Mr H, who embodies every sense of the phrase “you can do anything you want, be the best you”. Mr H is a truly amazing role model.

  • Have a gym towel
  • Please wear appropriate fitness attire (in line with mufti day attire ie: no singlets, appropriate length shorts)

As the saying goes “Champions are made when no one is watching.” These world-class athletes did not become champions when they held up the first trophy. They became champions during the hours spent relentlessly training, working and struggling to be in a position to hoist the trophy high.

Junior Sport

During the week all Junior School families would have received an Engage email notification  relating to a new focus when we return to school. We are striving to enhance team spirit and culture within Redlands and especially through sport. The best way to do this is through a “war cry” for students to do before a game. Our Senior School Rugby teams has been leading a War Cry for many years and it creates great enthusiasm and Redlands pride. We have created an introduction video to our Redlands War Cry. Please view the video here: Redlands War Cry video

THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP! We would like families (including pets) to recreate this War Cry from the video and send us their best Redlands War Cry video. A short 30 sec video submission of our Redlands War Cry as shown in the video above, can either be emailed to us at kosullivan@redlands.nsw.edu.au OR shared with us through Google Drive (if the video is too large for it to be sent via email).

The best family Redlands War Cry video will win a prize pack. This will be based off creativity, enthusiasm and spirit. Videos need to be submitted by 4.00pm Monday 6th September.

If you have any questions and issues please let us know. We thank you all in advance for participating in our War Cry Challenge and may the best video win!

Continuing along the theme of the Olympics with the Paralympics available to view this week students have also been contacted via their Google classroom. There are lots of activities for students to complete, some examples are shown below.

Activity 1: Learn what is the Paralympics?

Learn about the history of the Paralympics and what it truly means. What is the Paralympics?

Activity 2: Watch some Superhumans in action.

Drama and Theatre Classes Creative Characters

Each week our Drama and Theatre students meet to explore their creative side in ever increasing imaginative ways. This week some of our Yr 5 Acting students had fun creating characters with sock puppets and our Year 1 Acting used their favourite soft toy to bring a character to life. The smiles on their faces are priceless. Congratulations to all the Drama and Theatre teachers who continue to adapt new ways of bringing happiness to our students in the remote classroom.

Friday Night Live!

Our wonderful Arts Captains Maddie and Felix have a great new Arts initiative, a showcase of Redlands Arts talent with contributions from all Secondary Year Groups. This event is aimed at all student audiences NOT limited students involved with the Arts community! A chance to get together and celebrate even though we are apart.

WHAT IS IT: This is an event that will take place on 10 September at 5pm, with ‘LIVE’ performances. It will occur via Zoom and include several students from each Year performing a 2-3 minute act. We use this term ‘performing’ as it does not limit the submissions to the typical categories usually used in events such as Gala Arts or other various competitions throughout the school. Both of us know how many creative and inspiring students there are in this school so we thought to make the options limitless on what students want to present

HOW WILL IT BE DONE: Students wishing to be involved should submit a video of their ‘act’ to the Friday Night Live assignment page in the Student Leaders course, which will be then looked at by Felix, Maddie and Ms Daley. Acts will then be chosen to perform on Friday 10 September. Unfortunately, we can only have several acts per year group but we will try to build a diverse, entertaining and amazing repertoire of performances so get as creative as possible!

POSSIBLE CATEGORIES (NOT LIMITED TO THE ONES LISTED): Vocal/ Theatre/ Instrumental/ Dance/ Stand Up Comedy/ Rap/ Poetry Reading/ Personal Composition

We really want to see your individuality shine through!

WHEN IS IT:  Audition Submissions are due next Monday, 6th of September and the actual event takes place on 10 September at 5pm.

If you have any questions please get in contact with Felix or Maddie, who really want to give you everyone a fun night celebrating the amazing students in this school and boost a sense of positivity within our community during this tough time!

Music

The Lux Project

There’s a biblical proverb that says ‘a merry heart doth good like medicine’ and there’s decades of modern research that links music making with well-being. Pictured this week is our Combined Concert Band who meet and rehearse on Wednesday afternoons. Look at those merry faces!? We’re convinced that our lockdown lives are being enhanced by our continued commitment to our music making.

Our Senior Campus Combined Band, String and Choral ensembles embarked on a large scale collaborative project this week. We are excited to have commenced a new massed Choral and Orchestral piece, Lux Æterna – dubbed The Lux Project.  We will continue to develop this in the months ahead with the hope to share this with our community later in the year. These three ensemble streams will be Zooming in their regular rehearsal times for the remainder of the term.

Learning Music from Home

All extracurricular and cocurricular Music lessons, classes and ensembles continue in their now established home-learning patterns. Conductors communicate directly with P-12 ensembles when they wish for a Zoom session be scheduled in support of the weekly resource uploads to stage-specific learning platforms (See Saw, Google Classroom & iLearn).

Redlands Composition Competition

This year, the submission panel were overwhelmed by the sheer number and outstanding quality of composition entries for this year’s Redlands EP/Composition Competition (a.k.a. ‘Comp Comp’ or ‘Comp2‘ as it’s been affectionately dubbed by students). It thrills us to know that our young Redlanders are finding their sound and focussing what they want to say as musicians, and exploring songwriting and composition as a vehicle to communicate and express these ideas. The future is very bright in this regard.

The selected Composition Competition finalists will have their compositions developed, recorded and studio produced for ‘drop’ next year as part of the 2021/2022 Redlands EP.

Sadly we were restricted by being able to offer just 7 places in this year’s competition, with these places far outweighed by the number of meritorious submissions. Variety of offerings and styles played a key factor in the final selection process. All entrants are encouraged to keep honing their compositional craft and to submit again next year. Congratulations to all who submitted.

2021 Winners

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Redlands EP will feature works by:

Etta Buggy-Axton (7)
Phoebe Barnett (10)
Jamison Houchell (10)
Eden Borrie (11)
Hailey Kim (11)
Omar Rihani (11)
Callum Wardman-Browne (11)

Feedback on all submissions will be released to the iLearn Music Auditions page by Friday 3rd September.

Other Date Changes

Please keep your eye on the Music Events dates on Pulse in case of adjustments in the weeks and months ahead, in light of our rapidly changing context. As previously noted, the Senior Instrumental Competition that was scheduled for 13 September is looking to be rescheduled as restrictions allow. We will advise as able.

AMEB & St Cecilia Examinations

The Music Department continues to advocate for our students with regard to their forthcoming Examination enrolments. Though some students have chosen to withdraw their candidacy for the 2021 year in light of the current climate, many students are busily preparing for their adapted examination forum or creating home videos of their repertoire for online upload! Please reach out to Mrs Jacqueline McGlade who is liaising with these professional bodies on our behalf.
