Students from our Year 8 Latin Class Recently Reflected on their Learning Experience

In class, we translated a story about two Roman slaves and a thief which we adapted in small groups into a play. Recently, we’ve been learning about the Roman baths and how people would keep their personal items in a changing room (known as the apodyterio) which resulted in stealing becoming common. Our play was inspired by the story and we, as a class, all watched everyone’s performances and reacted like a Roman crowd

Studying Latin has not only enhanced my understanding of the language itself, but has caused me to improve in other academic areas and has bred and nurtured valuable habits. The Latin classroom is a very cooperative atmosphere, with realistic expectations set for each student to fully immerse themselves and be an active member of the classroom. In our Latin class we often perform Fabulae (plays), such as this one called ‘in apodyterio’, which is set in a Roman bath house and is about a thief who steals a toga belonging to a rich merchant. Two slaves try and catch him. Performing the fabulae improves our pronunciation of Latin, offers a better understanding of the culture, and is just fun. My favourite thing about studying Latin is the nurturing environment and the memories and bonds made in it.
