Sport Behaviours

As we enter our last round of Summer Sport for the majority of our teams this Saturday (Girls Basketball have their final round next week), we can remind ourselves how lucky we are to have access to the variety of sports that we do. Sport is as old as humanity itself. The core values that sport instils, the neurological benefits, the psychological benefits are all great but it is the improved social skills that sport provides which is of greater significance in this day and age. I am asking all students, whether they are involved in Representative Sport on Saturday or just the Wednesday sport, to say thank you to the coaches, the teaching staff, the contractors for their efforts over this last term. Two of the simplest words can mean so much to the bus driver who transports us to our sport on a Wednesday, to the coach who oversees the team and even to mum and dad for their commitment to ensuring you are fed, watered and dressed.

And while talent is normally associated with sport, I thought it is worth a mention that no matter what field it is, there are ten behaviours that require zero talent yet have a huge impact on our success.

  1. Being on Time – takes zero talent and shows discipline. It gives a good first impression.
  2. Work Ethic – doing your training with honesty and dedication will take you to new heights. Take pride in the quality of the work you’re doing.
  3. Effort – give your everything when you do something. You shouldn’t regret afterwards that you didn’t make enough effort to make things happen. Always do your best.
  4. Body Language – your body language speaks volumes about you. Be aware of your body language and make sure it is saying the message you want to communicate, show support in your teammates.
  5. Energy (Motivation) – stay focused. Focus on your goals.
  6. Attitude – a positive attitude can go a long way in a team.
  7. Passion – the enthusiasm you show when you are passionate about something is easily noticeable and can rub off on others.
  8. Being Coachable – always be open to learning. You can never know everything. To increase your chances of success, you need to be a continuous learner.
  9. Doing Extra – doing something extra will not cost you much but it will definitely add a lot to your character and make you stand above the crowd.
  10. Being Prepared – “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Always be prepared, formulate a plan before you do something. Being prepared reduces a significant amount of possibilities of failure.

“Success is the sum of small efforts – repeated day in and day out.” Robert Collier

Round 11

For Round 11 we had a few extra notable mentions. In Tennis, I received word that Lyndon Westbrook, despite being injured, arrived to support the team. He played his doubles match and Luca played up into 3rd rank for an extra singles match.

Our Touch Football team continues to excel, beating Riverview 14-2. Our Redlands A coach, James Learoyd, made special mention of Ethan James who not only controlled the game but he kept everyone in position and set up about 8 tries. His drawing of defenders and moving the ball out to the wings was exceptional. Touch Football as a sport is looking very strong for future years.

In our Yrs 3 and 4 C Basketball team, despite losing to Shore 12-10 in a tight game, it was reported that Ivy Flatman was immense on the defensive end, also top-scoring for the team, and played her heart out to almost come back and win.
