Yr 6 Legacy Gift and Thank You to the Redlanders Association

Our Yr 6 Legacy Gift Fair Day was held on Friday 13 November, raising funds for the Yr 6 Legacy Gift to the School.

Farewell to our Class of 2020

Congratulations to our Yr 12 students, completing their final exams last week and celebrating with their Formal on Friday night at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Their final Assembly, Prize Giving Ceremony and Valedictory Dinner yesterday showed how diverse and talented our students are. Their journey at Redlands does not finish as they move from Redlands students to Redlanders Alumni and are welcome to stay connected with their school in many different ways:

  • Sport and Performing Arts coaches
  • Guest speakers / Young Alumni panel participation
  • Mentoring and speaking with current students about experiences at university / tertiary studies, early career and life after Redlands
  • International and interstate Chapter Meetings
  • Garner support/advice from older Alumni
  • Performance opportunities at our Community and Fundraising events
  • Or just simply come to our annual happenings – Gala Arts, Musical, Senior Music Festival, Ballet and Dance Concert, Sports events etc.

From the Principal

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate with our Class of 2020 this week, with our Final Farewell Assembly at the School on Wednesday as well as our Valedictory Dinner at Luna Park that evening. I was incredibly moved by the quality of our students’ speeches, the way they shared from the heart with gratitude, their genuine affection for their peers and respect for the staff. Billy Gleeson, 2015 School Captain, was the memorable guest speaker, with a strong message about being open to change and creating new career pathways beyond the school gates. His current role working in marketing and technology did not exist when he was at school – a strong reminder of the importance of our focus on supporting students to think critically, creatively and be responsive and adaptable.

In a thoughtful gesture, due to tight attendance constraints, Chair of the Board Ms Glenda McLoughlin, invited current Year 12 parent and Board Director, Professor Glenn Wightwick, to represent her on the evening and to speak on behalf of the Board and present a gift from the School to the students. The warmth and sincerity of his address set the tone for the event. We were treated to stunning performances by our student musicians and an inspiring address by Year 12 Year Advisor Eddy Atkins, who highlighted the massive challenges faced by his grandparents through the Second World War and the joy they have embraced in their lives following this period. In a strong reflection of the importance of the partnership with our parents and carers, it was moving to hear Jonathan Algar speak on behalf of the Year 12 parents and reflect on his sons’ experience during their 15 years at the School. Yes, sons, as Harry and Jack are twins and they started in Preschool together at Redlands House. My thanks to all involved in making the evening such a special event.

Another very special event being held on campus this week has been the Year 9 Indigenous cultural immersion ‘Midawarr’ camp. Coordinated by Culture College Aboriginal Corporation, our campus has been virtually linked to Arnhem Land for the students to learn from the Yolngu people through a virtual cultural immersion classroom experience. The students have worked virtually with Yolngu mentors and onsite staff from Culture College to gain a deep understanding of Yolngu language and culture and learn about the Yolngu laws and customs. To provide further support, members of Sydney’s Gadigal and Dharug communities have participated in the on-campus cultural immersion with practical workshops including a Smoking Ceremony, dancing, ochre painting and eating bush tucker.

Learning about Indigenous history and contemporary communities are such important lessons for our students. It is a privilege to listen and learn directly from First Nations, not only to deepen our understanding of the values and beliefs of the oldest living culture on the planet but in order to move forward together towards genuine Reconciliation.

We have been excited to pilot this program with Culture College, which has the potential to support Yolngu people in their vision of expanding knowledge and understanding of their strong culture and connection to country.

Second Hand Book Sale

On Monday 30 November (Week 8), Secondary School students will be able to bring in their used textbooks for sale or donation and buy current edition textbooks for 2021. Current edition textbooks will be sold to others within the Redlands community. Previous editions no longer used at Redlands will be donated to other communities who will welcome and use them. Transactions will be non-cash, with the net balance recorded on your school accounts next year. 

Through this Sale, the RPFA aims to reduce paper wastage for environmental benefit, keep the costs of textbooks down for families and donate disused texts to charitable organisations who distribute them to communities that will continue to benefit from them.

Yr 12 Farewell Assembly and Valedictory

Yesterday was a special day for our Yr 12 students and their parents as we were thrilled to finally be able to celebrate the Yr 12 Farewell Assembly at school and then the Yr 12 Annual Prize Giving and Valedictory at the Big Top in Luna Park. We hope that these special milestones for our Class of 2020 students provided a fitting and celebratory conclusion to what has certainly been a challenging year for them. Throughout both events, I was struck once again by the expressions of positivity and gratitude shared by our graduating students. In their final messages to the Secondary School community, our departing School Captains, Izzy and James, encouraged students in Yrs 7-11 to remember to be kind to themselves and others; to take every opportunity provided at school; and to grasp and appreciate the little moments. They, along with the rest of the Class of 2020, have been wonderful leaders for our school this year and have truly lived their 2020 values of positivity, courage and celebration.

In my address to the departing Yr 12 students, I shared with them some lines from Seamus Heaney’s, The Cure at Troy, which is a verse adaptation of Sophocles’ play, Philoctetes. Heaney wrote it in 1990 in response to the unrest and violence in Northern Ireland, as well as to the political situation in South Africa with the oppression of apartheid seemingly cured by the release of Nelson Mandela. (It was one of my father’s favourite poems, fusing together his love and admiration for Nelson Mandela, Seamus Heaney and Ireland. It is also a favourite poem of the new American President-elect, Joe Biden, and he has quoted it in speeches and campaign ads in recent months.)

Below is a little of what I shared with them:

Heaney writes:

Human beings suffer
They get hurt and get hard.
No poem or play or song
Can fully right a wrong
Inflicted and endured.

History says, Don’t hope
On this side of the grave…
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.

So hope for a great sea-change
On the far side of revenge.
Believe that a further shore
Is reachable from here.
Believe in miracles
And cures and healing wells.

Call miracle self-healing:
The utter, self-revealing
Double-take of feeling.
If there’s fire on the mountain
Or lightning and storm
And a god speaks from the sky

That means someone is hearing
The outcry and the birth-cry
Of new life at its term.”

It means in your lifetime that justice will rise up, and hope and history will rhyme.

Class of 2020, I have said on numerous occasions that amidst all of the challenges, uncertainties and disappointment of this past year, you have given me and many of us present with you today, hope.

  • You gave hope during remote learning when you were physically apart and still connected with each other through online messages and videos of support.
  • You gave hope in the way you wanted to lift the spirits of our school community with your colourful display of Hawaiian shirts when you returned to campus.
  • You gave hope in how you turned the negative of not being able to use your privileges to go off campus for lunch into a positive of having your whole cohort share your lunchtimes together in the top garden.
  • You gave hope in living your 2020 values of positivity, courage and celebration.
  • And you gave hope in the simple joy you shared skipping rope and singing John Denver’s Country Road in Liggins Courtyard.

Class of 2020, thank you for inspiring us and sharing your hope with us this year. We know it hasn’t always been easy. There have been doubts and fears and heartache. But you have endured and overcome every obstacle you have faced.

As you leave Redlands, may you go on to inspire tidal waves of justice. May you find your healing wells. And may you create a world where hope and history rhyme. 

We are so, so proud of you and wish you every joy and success in the years to come.

Yr 9 Midawarr Program

It has been a special week on the Senior Campus as our Yr 9 students have been partaking in their indigenous cultural immersion experience facilitated by Culture College. On Tuesday we were privileged to have a Welcome to Country and a Smoking Ceremony for our Yr 9 students and staff. It was a powerful and moving opening to the week. Students have been connecting with both the local Indigenous community, as well as the Yolngu community of Arnhem Land via Zoom, through a range of authentic activities including dancing, ochre painting and eating bush tucker along with gaining a deep understanding of the Yolngu language, Yolngu culture and learning about the Yolngu laws and customs. It has been wonderful to see true two-way learning taking place and we hope it will be a springboard for much deeper and more meaningful connections for our school community with Indigenous communities in Arnhem Land and locally. People who know far more about this space than I have reported back that this type of experience, in which our Yr 9 students are currently participating, is an Australian first and a number of other schools in the area have been visiting us this week to see how they might be able to run similar programs in the future.

Diversity in the Workplace Presentation

On Monday our Yr 10 students were privileged to hear a presentation on the importance of diversity and gender equity in the workplace from co-Founder and Principal of Buildcorp, Josephine Sukkar. As many of you are aware, we have contracted Buildcorp to complete the Learning Hub, and we have enjoyed a strong relationship with them over the past few years. Josephine shared her inspiring personal journey with our students and encouraged them to have an open mind when choosing jobs and career paths for the future.   

Science Symposiums

Today, students in Yrs 8 and 10 presented their final projects as part of their Science Symposiums. Over the past few weeks, they have been researching scientific areas of their choosing and today was a culmination of their efforts. It was great to see their creative and critical thinking skills on display and I would like to thank the Science Department for their efforts in organising these symposiums. In speaking to some of the finalists today, I was struck how some of them have taken the current concerns around COVID-19 and focused their research on contemporary issues such as the safety of masks and the impacts of vaccinations. After hearing from our students and some of their ideas, I believe the world will be in safe hands moving forward.

Innovative Design Exhibition

Over recent weeks we have had our Innovative Design Exhibition. Major Works from Yr 12 Design and Technology, Yrs 11 and 12 Textiles and Design and Yr 10 Textile Technology have been on display throughout the Learning Hub and a video montage of the Major Works can be found here. It is wonderful to see the creativity, design thinking and sheer talent of our students in this space, and I would like to thank the staff from the Innovative Design department for their continued support of our students.

Chaplain

The heart of God is one of compassion and justice. So much of the pages of the bible is about God advocating for the downtrodden and calling of people who are experiencing blessing to be generous to others.

I love the story of Ruth, a young widow returning with her mother-in-law to Israel. She is childless and has no means of support. However, the laws of Israel ensured that farmers only harvested once leaving the leftovers available to the poor of society, a provision that enabled food for any who would go to the field to gather it in.

The pandemic has seen our Government make provision for many groups in our community while we have also seen remarkable community spirit in caring for people. However, there are more and more people in the community across greater Sydney who are having trouble providing for their families. More than ever, those of us who are experiencing blessings can be generous to others.

Anglicare is in the unique position to ensure practical support of food goods get to people in real need and we are fortunate to be able to partner with them to show care to those with little to celebrate this Christmas.

With only a week to go, our support is at an all-time low. I suspect this is due to the unusual busyness of this term. I would like to appeal to you that now is the time to act with that extraordinary Redlands spirit to fill the boxes by Friday 27 November, ready for delivery in the following week.

Please bring in goods like long-life milk/custard; tinned salmon, ham, fruit and vegetables; packaged cakes, puddings and biscuits; pasta and pasta sauces; Milo, tea, coffee and jam. Please remember these need to be non-refrigerated items. Students should deliver the goods to Tutor Groups as soon as possible.

Uniform Shop

New Students 2021

Students commencing at Redlands in 2021 will need to make an appointment for a uniform fitting before Monday 7 December. We highly recommend an appointment is made this term due to our current restrictions limiting the number of customers permitted in the Uniform Shop.

A reminder for Yr 6 boys moving into Secondary School next year that white short sleeve shirts are required to be worn. With boys now having the option of wearing shorts in the Secondary School in Terms 1 and 4, they may continue to wear their grey shorts from Junior School in Term 1 next year.

Year 11

On Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Valedictory Prize Giving and Dinner for the Class of 2020. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate this milestone occasion with these students, parents and teachers, especially given the recent restrictions on such community events. It is hard to believe, that in only a year’s time our cohort, the Class of 2021, will be in their place. 

Yr 12 Camp 2021

Today, I released a Google form asking students to state their preference for their camp activity for our Yr 12 Camp (Mon 1-5 February 2021). I have asked that students speak with me directly around any camp concerns they may have. I feel it is important that at this age students take ownership and negotiate concerns rather than have parents ring or email. Camp 2021 is certain to be a fabulous experience for all that will allow students to move outside of their comfort zones and into their “courage zones”. We intend to mark our students’ Yr 12 journey with an appropriate celebration on the last evening at our High Country Campus.

Year 10

Yr 10 Camp

Last week Yr 10 had a fabulous time on camp at Myall Lakes. The weather was amazing and meant that the students were able to actively participate in a range of activities including hiking, canoeing and mountain biking in the stunning location and bright sunshine. From a personal point of view, it was wonderful to visit many of the students in their groups during the week to see how much they were enjoying themselves and how far they have come as individuals and groups since our Yr 9 Camp in Term 1 of 2019. They are all amazing young people to have navigated the ups and downs of the past year and yet remain positive and motivated during their time on camp. I spent the week feeling very proud to be their Year Advisor and am looking forward to seeing them develop further in the coming two years. I must also mention the wonderful Tutors and additional Redlands staff who led the groups last week, as they played such a positive and supportive role for the students.

Year 9

Connect to Country at The Midawarr Camp Incursion   

Yr 9 have had the privilege and opportunity this week to immerse themselves in the much anticipated Midawarr Camp. On the first day of the camp, Yr 9 were treated to a moving, spiritual Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country, led by Uncle Ray, an elder from the Aurora Nation. Smoking ceremonies are an ancient custom among Indigenous Australians in which native plants are burnt to produce smoke and acknowledge the ancestors and pay respect to the land, waters and sea of the country. The smoke is believed to have healing and cleansing properties. It was a privilege for our Year 9 students to be part of such a significant cultural event that connected the Indigenous community with our Redlands community to country.

On day 1, students connected and had meaningful conversations via Zoom with Yolngu people in north-eastern Arnhem Land to discuss the laws and customs of Yolngu culture with the assistance of their Tutor and Culture College supervisor. Students have also had immersive, practical opportunities to connect with the Yolngu culture by participating in Gawura activities which involved Dance, ochre painting and learning about hunting tools, along with Yolngu Matha – Communication and Sign Language. 

The students had to write their own Acknowledgement of Country which gave them an opportunity to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

On day 2, Yr 9 participated in Djalkirri Rom – learning about Yolngu lore and customs. They also had the opportunity to expand their taste buds through tasting Kangaroo and damper, fresh from a fire pit in the Koomurri bush tucker activities.

“Today we looked into and learned the sign language and simple phrases in the Yolngu language, which was very interesting. We got to speak to our mentors, and learned how to pronounce phrases such as ‘yo nhe yaku’, which means what is your name, and learned how to use sign language to say family titles and the names of different animals. It was a really interesting experience that we were so lucky to partake in.” – Lily Hobbs

Yr 9 have proven their maturity this week through their sensitivity and cultural understanding of Indigenous culture which is a reflection of their commitment to the Midawarr Camp.

Canteen Update – Reminder

As you have been made aware, we have commenced online ordering in the Senior Campus Canteen this year and we are strongly encouraging students to use this system for purchasing food in the Canteen for the remainder of this term. 

From the beginning of Term 1 2021 we will be moving to a more complete pre-order system in the Secondary School. This will mean that if students want to purchase a hot or pre-prepared meal for Recess or Lunch, they will have to use the online purchasing system, Flexischools. While there will still be some snacks available for students to purchase in person at Recess and Lunch, the majority of meals will only be available for students to pre-order via Flexischools.

This arrangement will allow for:

  • a more extensive menu for students to choose from
  • certainty for students that meals will be available for them to pick up in the Canteen
  • less wastage of food in the Canteen

Many parents would be currently using this arrangement in the Junior School which has had positive feedback.

CANTEEN ORDERING – FLEXISCHOOLS

Parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family and link a credit card and student number to the account. Students can submit orders up until 8.30am to ensure they are available for them to pick up at Recess or Lunch. We would encourage all students and parents to create an account and start using Flexischools this term to ensure they are fully prepared for this change next year. Year 8

Yr 8 Luna Park Excursion – Cancelled

This is a friendly reminder that due to COVID restrictions, the Yr 8 Luna Park Day organised through the Maths Department has been cancelled this year. 

Camp

Last week was a very memorable camp for students and staff. While the camp had been delayed due to COVID and followed a difficult and, for many students, stressful, time of the year, the students quickly left school behind and dove into the outdoor classroom, the physical activities, the chance to enjoy time spent with one another, the opportunity to reflect on the year nearing a close and the ability to engage with some different teachers, many were able to meet and get to know in this one week away. 

While Yr 8 students may not always fully share the many details of their camp experience with parents and adults, including just how much fun they truly had, their smiling faces, genuine care for one another and their full participation in the activities told the story itself. The OEG and Redlands staff were extremely impressed with their positive mindset, team attitude and full engagement throughout the week. Well done to all 12 camp groups for fully embracing this experience and hopefully finding a few takeaways to apply back at school.

What Can We Do To Protect Our Coral Reefs?

Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 November

As Redlands continues to offer experiences to students that explore modern approaches to thinking and learning, next week Year 8 will be participating in a two day STEAM project to collaborate in team multi-disciplinary learning environments.

This specific theme, stemming from the 2018 International Year of the Reef, will concentrate on exploring aspects of climate change and global warming that cause coral bleaching, along with the human footprint, another factor that also significantly affects coral reefs.

With Yr 8 Tutors and Specialist teachers involved, students will journey through a project-based learning experience that is focusing on the declining coral reefs of the world and developing solutions to one of three challenges: Over-Fishing, Climate Change or Human Impact.

Students will be able to wear their Redlands Sports uniform and, as the learning experiences will be integrating technology, students will be required to ensure that they have their laptops (fully charged), mobile phones (technology activities), headphones and pencil cases as their essential learning resources.

Exam Block

Congratulations to all Yr 8 students on a fantastic Exam Block. Students came prepared each morning with all of their materials. They took the experience seriously and understood the expectations of the week. 

As examinations are returned to students these next two weeks, we strongly encourage students to use their feedback for further improvement. Students are encouraged to:

  1. Check marks carefully
  2. Celebrate correctly answered questions
  3. Learn the content from incorrectly answered questions
  4. Ask the teacher for further clarification with things that are not understood

Today, students in Yrs 8 presented their final projects as part of their Science Symposiums. Over the past few weeks, they have been researching scientific areas of their choosing and today was a culmination of their efforts. The Yr 8 winners were:

Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker

All Year Groups are participating in sharing the joy for the holidays with Toys ‘n’ Tucker collection hampers. Students are encouraged to bring in as many items from the suggested shopping list, including Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, tinned ham or salmon, tea or coffee, Milo, dried pasta, pasta sauce, long-life milk or custard, tinned fruit or vegetables, jam or biscuits. Gift cards, sporting equipment and toiletry items may also be donated for teenagers.

Year 7

Yr 7 STEAM Incursion

Next Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 November, Yr 7 will be involved in the STEAM program Mindful Worlds – Creating Eco-Friendly Cities on Alternative Worlds. This program stems from global interest in creating eco-friendly environments with sustainable cities, recreation spaces, transport, agriculture, horticulture and industrial spaces. These spaces will be built in Minecraft and concentrate on exploring aspects of energy systems, climate change, global warming and the human footprint that impacts the future of our cities. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students, and we look forward to seeing the results.

Canteen Update – Reminder

As you have been made aware, we have commenced online ordering in the Senior Campus Canteen this year and we are strongly encouraging students to use this system for purchasing food in the Canteen for the remainder of this term. 

From the beginning of Term 1 2021 we will be moving to a more complete pre-order system in the Secondary School. This will mean that if students want to purchase a hot or pre-prepared meal for Recess or Lunch, they will have to use the online purchasing system, Flexischools. While there will still be some snacks available for students to purchase in person at Recess and Lunch, the majority of meals will only be available for students to pre-order via Flexischools.

This arrangement will allow for:

  • a more extensive menu for students to choose from
  • certainty for students that meals will be available for them to pick up in the Canteen
  • less wastage of food in the Canteen

Many parents would be currently using this arrangement in the Junior School which has had positive feedback.

CANTEEN ORDERING – FLEXISCHOOLS

Parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family and link a credit card and student number to the account. Students can submit orders up until 8.30am to ensure they are available for them to pick up at Recess or Lunch. We would encourage all students and parents to create an account and start using Flexischools this term to ensure they are fully prepared for this change next year. National Skin Cancer Action Week

This week is Melanoma Awareness Week (Cancer Council) coinciding with National Skin Cancer Action Week (15-21 November). As a result, Yr 7 were asked to wear their craziest broad-brimmed hat and pair of sunglasses – these were worn during recess and lunch in support of this day.

Preventing skin cancer – Protect your skin

For best protection, when the UV level is 3 or above, we recommend a combination of sun protection measures:

  • Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible
  • Slop on broad-spectrum, water resistant SPF30 sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.
  • Slap on a hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears
  • Seek shade
  • Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian standards.
  • Be extra cautious in the middle of the day when UV levels are most intense.

Speech Day

As you would have seen in the calendar and read in Mr Webber’s recent communication, our Junior School Speech Day takes place at 11.00am on Wednesday 2 December and will again be held at The Big Top, Luna Park. All students are expected to attend this final formal occasion of the year and further details of the event will be sent in a separate letter to all families.

On Friday afternoon, class teachers will notify their students of this year’s class prize winners in their respective classes. In each class, six prizes are awarded as outlined below:

  • 2 x Academic Effort and Achievement 
  • 2 x Outstanding Approach to Learning 
  • 2 x Citizenship 

Each year, class teachers award these prizes based on their observations over the whole year and in conjunction with feedback from specialist teachers who teach them too. In addition, there are some major prizes awarded in Yr 6 only and these will also be announced to the cohort on Friday. All of these prizes will be presented on Speech Day which will also be the occasion for the announcement of our 2021 Student Leaders, as previously communicated.

Class teachers have commenced the meticulous process of class formations for 2021 and finalise the composition and balance of each class factoring in the teaching teams in each Year Group. Past experience has shown that the careful and professional approach we take ensures the optimum learning environment for each student.

Class placements are organised by the teaching staff who see and teach these students each and every day and hence, know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  • the individual learning, social and emotional needs of each child
  • knowledge of the different teaching styles of teachers in the next Year Group
  • friendships of students where this has a positive impact on their learning (students are also involved in this step)
  • ability levels to ensure an even spread of ability levels across each class
  • an aim to balance gender in each class, as best possible

You will understand and appreciate that it is not possible to request a specific teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is neither sustainable nor fair to all families. Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits.

A significant amount of time, professional dialogue and thought goes into this important operational process to aim to match each individual student with the right teacher and peers and our Dean of Students, Counsellors and I also take part in this process with our additional knowledge of students.

Once Year Groups have finalised these, there will be a comprehensive face-to-face handover of knowledge between teaching staff before the start of Term 1, 2021, to ensure that teachers have as much information as possible ahead of next year. These class lists are then prominently displayed on the first day of the new school year but we also have individual student timetables up on the portal before the start of term so that parents have access to see who their child’s class teacher will be before the start of the 2021 academic year.

I hope this summary clarifies the detailed process that will take place later this term in this very important part of our preparation for 2021.

Yr 6 Uniform

A reminder for Yr 6 boys moving into Secondary School next year that white short sleeve shirts are required to be worn. With boys now having the option of wearing shorts in the Secondary School in Terms 1 and 4, they may continue to wear their grey shorts from Junior School in Term 1 next year.  

House Poetry Recital

Monday saw our 13th Annual House Poetry Recital, a joyous oratory occasion that both students and teachers look forward to. This term, every single Junior School student has been immersed in poetry having read, written, appreciated and presented poems. With one representative selected from each Junior School class, the rest of the school enjoyed a truly memorable start to the week with our performers showing poise, charisma and confidence as they delivered their respective poems via Zoom to the audience of students, teachers and their parents.

Following on from the introduction of this aspect last year, students were excited to hear poems read by a number of teachers. My appreciation is extended to Mr Price, Ms Anagnostu, Senora Colagiuri, Mrs Rolon (Head of English) and our Deputy Principal, Ms McGarry, for their marvellous recitals.

Yr 6 Legacy Fair

Well done to our Yr 6 cohort, ably supported by their teachers, in organising and hosting a wonderful Legacy Fair last Friday for Yrs 3-5 students to enjoy and be part of. With the threat of rain, the event moved indoors but this did not impact on the meticulous way in which the event was planned and carried out and the students’ enthusiasm in running the Fair was palpable.

The final total raised was a staggering $3,410 (yes, that’s a lot of gold coins to count!) and alongside this amazing collection, we were grateful to receive a generous donation of $2,500 from the Redlands Parents and Friends Association towards a feature indoor green wall in the atrium and a time capsule to capture the unique nature of 2020, and we look forward to seeing these two items in due course.

Along with the Fair, it was great to host a small rock concert to allow the Junior Rock Band to perform in the Hall with appropriate distancing. My thanks to Ms Moses and Mr Owen for facilitating this and it was great to see the group enjoy the opportunity to perform as a small group and the joy amongst the student audience.

Congratulations, Yr 12 – Class of 2020

It is always such a privilege for me to attend the final assembly for our departing Yr 12 cohort and after the postponement of this milestone event last term, the School warmly welcomed back this special group of students yesterday for one last time. Like many of the Junior School staff, we remember many of the group from their younger days and share in the pride of the young adults that they have become.

At the end of last term, I was deeply moved by a late afternoon visit from one of the group, Maya Auld. Maya had joined Redlands in the Junior School some eight years ago and popped in to pass on a handwritten ‘thank you’ card with photos of her and her younger brother on their first day in the Junior School in January 2013 and then a comparative photo on Maya’s last day. To say I was moved by Maya’s visit and her words would be an understatement but was another affirmation of the privilege we have as educators to see students grow and blossom. Along with Maya, I watched with immense pride as the Class of 2020 listened to the very personal words of peer and school leaders recognising their extraordinary leadership as a group in this extraordinary year. Then, in time-honoured tradition, the Year Group were given a guard of honour by students and staff from Preschool to Yr 6, albeit one with no high-fives but generous applause. Following this assembly, I joined the Yr 12 Valedictory Dinner last night and it was a joy to see both students and parents be able to gather for this momentous occasion and finish this chapter in their lives at Redlands. As has been customary, the School Captain when this group started Yr 7 was the guest speaker and Billy Gleeson spoke with great passion and warmth sharing his phenomenal journey since leaving Redlands, during which time he has achieved much across many different areas.

State Championships Softball

Congratulations to Lauren Rolfe (Yr 4) who competed for Manly Warringah in the NSW Softball State Championships. As an integral member of the team, Lauren demonstrated great leadership and teamwork as her team progressed to the Grand Final and then won to become NSW State Champions for 2020. In talking to Lauren, she talked about the strength of togetherness in her team and that their teamwork made the difference.

Prep Presentation Day

Ms Sarah McGarry sent out a letter to all families last week outlining the upcoming events across the campuses. I can confirm that the Preparatory Presentation Day will be commencing at 10.00am and will be live-streamed. An emailed invitation will be sent out to all families next week with the Zoom link and also an electronic program for you to follow. Our staff and students have been working extremely hard to ensure the Presentation Day includes as many students as we can. Please be aware that we will endeavour to have all our students visible at some stage during the event. We will respect the wishes of those families who have requested their child not to appear on the live stream.

The students will remain at school after the Presentation this year and normal car line times and processes will remain in place.

Melanoma Awareness Day

Today our Prep students and staff wore crazy hats to support Melanoma Awareness Day. A very important and timely message as we enter our summer months. Our students were encouraged to remember the message of slip slop slap! As always, we ensure our Prep students are wearing their play hats in the playground and encourage them to sit in the shade when they are eating their recess and lunch.

Thank you to all our families who sent a gold coin in with their children or bought merchandise to support this important message.

Yr 2

This term, Yr 2 have been learning about materials and their properties. We have engaged in the design and make process to create structures for a particular purpose. Some students designed a structure to protect an egg when doing the Egg Drop Challenge. Other students elected to design a boat that floats. Students have been testing, reviewing and refining their designs this week. We had so much fun testing each design, as evident in the squeals of delight! I think we have some young engineers amongst us.

The last day of the year for Redlands House students is Tuesday 1 December. Redlands House will close after the Prep School Concert at 12.00pm. Please note there is no Late Room on this day. The last day for Late Room is 30 November.

The children have been very excited this week to film their Christmas songs and end of year celebration. With special white tshirts and a little bit of Christmas sparkle, we have very much enjoyed learning, practising and performing their songs for you. Transition Gold 2021 Information Session

An information session for children enrolled for the Transition Gold class in 2021 will be held on Wednesday 25 November at 3.30pm. A Zoom invite for this session will be sent to families on Monday 23 November. This session will cover all aspects of the Transition Gold program and provide parents with an opportunity to ask questions.

Boys

Round 4 saw some heated games against Oakhill. Our As had some very tough match-ups against some of the top teams in the competition with Oakhill edging past Redlands in all games on this line. Our Bs had close games across the board, securing two wins for the 2nds and 17Bs respectively. The Cs played against strong Oakhill teams, with the 17Cs getting the only win in this line. There was one win in the Ds line, with the Open Golds defeating the Oakhill Yellow side very convincingly.

Girls

There were four teams who played on Saturday with four wins. The 1sts had another strong win over the Oakhill 1sts to continue their undefeated streak. The 2nds and Redlands 3 also played some great basketball, winning against the Oakhill 2 and Oakhill 3 teams respectively. Redlands 3 is also undefeated this season. The Junior Cs played against the Junior C Barker team and played some great team basketball resulting in a win, as they improve each week. The Term 4 finals will be held on Saturday 28 November. Further information regarding the finals will be made available at the beginning of Week 7.

Rowing 

After three false starts relating to COVID and thunderstorms, the Rowing program finally attended its first regatta of the season at the Independent School Championships held at Penrith. Typically, by this stage of the season, our rowers would have already had a number of races worth of experience under their belt however this year many of our crews were pulling up to the start line for their first ever official race.

Each of our students have the opportunity to race in multiple events and Year Groups, with most students racing in their own Year Group but also in the Year Group above. This tactic gives our students at least four races each across what is a huge day for both the individual and program as a whole.

In total, on 99 separate occasions, there was a Redlands crew or sculler that approached the start line to race in either their heat or final. The times from each heat then determined which final individual crews progressed through to. From these races, there were 19 occasions that a Redlands crew finished with either a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal:

Swimming

In Term 1 2021, Redlands will once again be offering a Swimming Squad program through the Manly Andrew Boy Charlton Aquatic Centre Swim School for all interested Secondary School students. The program will run for six weeks on Friday afternoons commencing on 29 January from 4.00-5.00pm. Ideally, students will attend all six sessions and they will be held at the Manly Andrew Boy Charlton Aquatic Centre, Kenneth Rd, North Manly.

The program is for all students who would like to improve their swimming and build more confidence when it comes to competing at the Redlands Swimming Carnival.

Students will be transported by bus to and from the venue. The bus will leave the Senior Campus, Military Rd (school side) at 3.30pm and will return at approximately 5.30pm. Students may be collected from the pool at 5.00pm. Students must be collected by the time the bus departs at 5.10pm or they will be required to catch the bus back to school.

Tennis

On Saturday, our teams all played in the last round match of the Term 4 NSTA competition. Once again, there were mixed results with a number of really good wins alongside matches that challenged teams. This week will be the finals and playoffs. All teams will play for a final position 1 – 6 in their division, 1 v 2 (final), 3 v 4 or 5 v 6. Final placings may lead to a promotion or relegation of a division in the Term 1, 2021 competition.

As we near the end of the year, students are encouraged to continue their tennis over the holidays either socially or competitively. Grand Slam Tennis will be running a holiday camp in December and January, more information to follow. For students looking to enter tournaments, there are plenty of UTR Tennis Tournaments running over the summer.

Just a friendly reminder, please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to ensure there is sufficient time for a warm up and matches can start on time, 8.00am and 10.00am. If students are sick or injured and cannot attend training please email Eliza Peirce. If students are sick and rostered to play on Saturday, please email Eliza Peirce before 12.00pm on the Friday to ensure a replacement can be found and all sets can be completed.

Touch Football 

We had a number of internal matches this past weekend, with our Junior A and Junior B teams facing off, and our Junior C team taking on our Junior E team. In what are always tough matches with mates against mates, it was great to see at the end of the game all teams congratulating each other. The coaches have been very impressed with the skill development that is shining through. Our Senior 4ths took on Barker 5 which was an entertaining game to watch, some enterprising end to end play led to a close 2-2 draw at half time. Unfortunately, Barker came home strong and took the match 4-2. Our Senior 2nd and 3rd teams took on Baker 3 and 2 respectively, with some mixed results. Our 2nds looked to execute a number of skills they have picked up and got out to an early lead, taking down Barker 3 9-0. Our 3rds had a different game against a much improved Barker 2 team, unfortunately going down 0-7. Our 1sts took on Oakhill 1 really looking to move on after last weeks loss to Barker 1. The girls showed great skill driving up the field with ease. Some last pass execution let a few of our plays down, however the girls stayed positive knowing their hard work was paying off, taking the match 5-4. 

We had a number of students trial for the Norths Touch Football State Cup teams over the past few weeks. Congratulations to the following students on their selections: Tristian Wong (Yr 8), Tom Reeves (Yr 8), Daniel Lev (Yr 8), Alfie Leach (Yr 8) and William De Saxe (Yr 8) who have been selected in the 16 Boys team. Maddie D’aLmeida (Yr 9) was selected in the Girls 16 team. Katie Wightwick (Yr 10), Gabi Drage (Yr 11), Jazz Gregan (Yr 11) and Olivia Donoghue (Yr 11) have been selected in the 18 Girls side. We also had a number of girls selected into the 16/18 Development team: Indi Hindmarsh (Yr 8), Lily Attard (Yr 9), Bronte Backhouse (Yr 9), Maddi Barwise (Yr 9), Layla Carpenter (Yr 9), Lucy Roberts (Yr 11) and Megan Price (Yr 11).

TERM 4 SUMMER SPORTS DRAW

Important

Families who have hired a Basketball singlet over the last three years will have received an email to return all jerseys (washed or unwashed) to the Sports office on Monday 23 November so they can be cleaned, sorted and itemised for the 2021 season. Touch Football teams are also asked to return their singlet which was loaned to them for our Term 4 season. Please label these clearly with your child’s name and dropped to the Sports office or reception so all jerseys are accounted for.

Please note that, as per the Term 4 Sports Calendar, this week was the last week for our morning training sessions for Basketball and Touch Football.

Sport Behaviours

As we enter our last round of Summer Sport for the majority of our teams this Saturday (Girls Basketball have their final round next week), we can remind ourselves how lucky we are to have access to the variety of sports that we do. Sport is as old as humanity itself. The core values that sport instils, the neurological benefits, the psychological benefits are all great but it is the improved social skills that sport provides which is of greater significance in this day and age. I am asking all students, whether they are involved in Representative Sport on Saturday or just the Wednesday sport, to say thank you to the coaches, the teaching staff, the contractors for their efforts over this last term. Two of the simplest words can mean so much to the bus driver who transports us to our sport on a Wednesday, to the coach who oversees the team and even to mum and dad for their commitment to ensuring you are fed, watered and dressed.

And while talent is normally associated with sport, I thought it is worth a mention that no matter what field it is, there are ten behaviours that require zero talent yet have a huge impact on our success.

  1. Being on Time – takes zero talent and shows discipline. It gives a good first impression.
  2. Work Ethic – doing your training with honesty and dedication will take you to new heights. Take pride in the quality of the work you’re doing.
  3. Effort – give your everything when you do something. You shouldn’t regret afterwards that you didn’t make enough effort to make things happen. Always do your best.
  4. Body Language – your body language speaks volumes about you. Be aware of your body language and make sure it is saying the message you want to communicate, show support in your teammates.
  5. Energy (Motivation) – stay focused. Focus on your goals.
  6. Attitude – a positive attitude can go a long way in a team.
  7. Passion – the enthusiasm you show when you are passionate about something is easily noticeable and can rub off on others.
  8. Being Coachable – always be open to learning. You can never know everything. To increase your chances of success, you need to be a continuous learner.
  9. Doing Extra – doing something extra will not cost you much but it will definitely add a lot to your character and make you stand above the crowd.
  10. Being Prepared – “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Always be prepared, formulate a plan before you do something. Being prepared reduces a significant amount of possibilities of failure.

Round 11

For Round 11 we had a few extra notable mentions. In Tennis, I received word that Lyndon Westbrook, despite being injured, arrived to support the team. He played his doubles match and Luca played up into 3rd rank for an extra singles match.

Our Touch Football team continues to excel, beating Riverview 14-2. Our Redlands A coach, James Learoyd, made special mention of Ethan James who not only controlled the game but he kept everyone in position and set up about 8 tries. His drawing of defenders and moving the ball out to the wings was exceptional. Touch Football as a sport is looking very strong for future years.

In our Yrs 3 and 4 C Basketball team, despite losing to Shore 12-10 in a tight game, it was reported that Ivy Flatman was immense on the defensive end, also top-scoring for the team, and played her heart out to almost come back and win.

Ballet and Dance

Asian Grand Prix International Competition

Congratulations to students Dante Minassian (Yr 6) and Angus McLachlan (Yr 9) for their outstanding results in the recent Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition, Australian Regional Competition. Dante was awarded a Gold Medal, while Angus received a Silver Medal. Outstanding results for both students.

Both dancers will now progress to the International finals in December.

End of Year Concert

We currently have a vast amount of items in the Lost Property cupboard situated in the hallway of Parkes Hall. Could all students kindly check the Lost Property before the end of term. Please note that unclaimed items will be removed and taken to the Junior Campus Lost Property at the end of Term 4.

International Summer School (ISS)

ISS will return to The McDonald College from 11-15 January 2021. Suitable for ages 7-20, ISS is a dance program designed for all skill levels ranging from recreational to the pre-professional dancer. For more details please click here.

Drama and Theatre

Onstage Selection

Congratulations to Yr 12 Drama student Tom Wightwick who has been selected for Onstage 2020 for his lighting design for the play Black Diggers (2014) by Tom Wright. Black Diggers by Tom Wright addresses the perception and reality of racism in Australia through the untold story of Indigenous soldiers, throughout World War 1. The play’s constant shifts in time and place over a 69 year period, from 1887 to 1965 highlights the two-faced nature of Australia’s racist culture, which is still faced by Indigenous Australians today. This unrealistic façade is realised in his design through contrasting colours. 

He addressed the episodic and Brechtian nature of the play through the transformative set, lighting colour and projection, communicating both location and time. He chose not to reflect the changing dates and time through the lighting as a metaphor for the presence of systemic racism throughout Australia’s history. 

Onstage 2020 will be released virtually in February 2021. 

Gala Arts 2020

This week our judges met via Zoom from Denmark, London, Melbourne and Sydney to decide on the winners of Gala Arts 2020. Winners in each category and the overall winners will be announced shortly. The video will be available for viewing shortly. 

Musical 2021

Callbacks for the Musical were held last Sunday. The full cast will be announced here on Friday 27 November.

Young Wharfies

A free intensive program for Yr 11 Drama students at Sydney Theatre Company

Young Wharfies is an engaging and free learning program for Yr 11 Drama students (in 2021) who are inspired by the power and creativity of theatre. 

The group of students selected to be 2021 Young Wharfies will spend a year attending productions, participating in workshops and meeting artists and creatives at STC.

In 2021, the Young Wharfies will:

  • Attend 7 productions throughout the year 
  • Explore aspects of each play in pre-show workshops
  • Deconstruct each show in discussion groups with other Young Wharfie participants 
  • Participate in five masterclasses led by artists/creatives about theatrical styles, playwriting, directing, programming and writing for theatre

To apply, complete the online application form below and create a short video. Your video should be short, simple and straight-to-the-point: tell us who you are and why you would like to be a Young Wharfie!

Advanced and Extension Ensembles Auditions 2021

Auditions for students wishing to move into the Advanced and/or Extension Music Ensemble Program, will be able to audition on Monday 23 November, Wednesday 25 November and Friday 27 November (Week 7). A reminder that regular, punctual attendance at all Music Ensemble rehearsals is imperative as students are underway in preparing for end of year events. Yrs 5-6 Virtual Incursion

Mara! Band performed for Yrs K-5 as featured artists within the Musica Viva concert series last week, taking place within our regular Choral and Music Instrumental lesson times across Week 6. The concert was themed Music in My Suitcase’and explored instruments and songs from all around the world. We sang and danced together, learnt words and songs in new languages and were amazed at the quality of the interactive program that was able to be afforded us even via the Zoom platform. We also loved discussing and celebrating the diversity that is within our own classrooms at Redlands. How fortunate we are to be in such an international context. Now to get that catchy song out of our heads “One Candle, Two Candles…”!
