Athletics Carnival

Our annual Junior School Athletics Carnival took place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in beautiful conditions on Wednesday. In the second of our big three carnivals, there was much excitement leading up to the day from all students. Credit to the students for maintaining their social distance in the stands, the checkerboard seating was a new thing for our carnival but that didn’t stop some great House spirit being demonstrated throughout the day. The House that stood out in this area was Cowper who, led by Lola Brasler and Digby Scott, danced and cheered their way to some bonus House spirit points.

With the entrant number system used in conjunction with the timing gates and photo finish, students were able to see their times and overall rankings on the giant screen as they finished their race. The inclusion of some new events, specifically the 50m sprint on the back straight, allowed for greater participation. In pre-marshalling we had our four way tug of war competition with Dumolo winning quite a few of the Age Group competitions.

New Records

  • Senior Girls Relay team (Cowper) set a new record 1:03.07 for the 4x100m (Lexi Rowe, Annalyse Rowe, Liliana Halfen and Lola Brasler)
  • 11 Yrs Boys Long Jump – Joel Daily recorded a 4.20m leap beating the previous record by 1cm from 2007
  • 12 Yrs Boys Discus – Joshua Colpani recorded a distance of 30.34m beating the previous record of 26.29m from 2012

Congratulations to these new record holders, they will receive a certificate of commendation at our Sports prize giving day next term.

A big thank you to the students with their Sports Uniform on point. Students had the opportunity to dress it up with head bands, hair ribbons and capes. These were complemented by multiple cans of hair spray, face paint and pom-poms. The Yr 6 students were able to wear the new House race bibs but more will be ordered next year for all students. The ability to identify their peers representing their House from the grandstand really added to the Carnival atmosphere.

With Cowper winning the Carnival for the previous five years, there was a huge reaction when the winning House was announced. Congratulations to Roseby on their win led by Sophie McDonald and Roy Rivera.

Video Highlights

With parents unable to attend the Carnival due to COVID restrictions, a video can be found here. Special mention to Mr Sawa who was able to get some footage at speed on his electric skateboard whilst balancing and holding a phone!

Team Movement

At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on three main criteria:

Ability              in direct comparison to other students on the team

Attendance  any student who misses two games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

Attitude         this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and students have been reminded to check these online team lists each Thursday night to see if there are any changes from training the day before.
