Issue 23 2020 - 06 Aug 2020

From the Principal

Upon venturing up to the fourth level of the New Learning Hub on Monday morning for the start of our Year 12 trial examinations, it was wonderful to see a display of 300 inspiring messages posted on the walls. The messages were compiled from an IB Theatre Arts project by Year 12 student Aleisha Lawrence and they provided a simple but powerful reminder of the small things in life that bring joy and gratitude. I must admit to one bringing a tear to my eye, “Playing Beatles records with my Dad”, as I remembered my own 20 year old daughter, Zoe, reigniting my passion for the Beatles as she directed me to purchase a new turntable for the old amplifier and speakers.

It has certainly been a challenging year for our Year 12 students and whilst we obviously value the importance of the trial examinations, we have continued to reinforce the need to keep things in perspective and encourage all students to focus on their wellbeing. Currently for our students, it can seem hard to find the moments to look forward to, with key end-of-year events in question. I greatly appreciate the work of the entire Secondary School Leadership Team in investigating alternatives and involving the students in finding creative solutions.

I thoroughly enjoyed attending our Junior School Athletics Carnival at SOPAC on Wednesday and assisting Mr Guha in the presentation of ribbons and medallions. New Head of Junior School Sport, Mr Dunne had added some extra fun events for the students, including a four-direction tug-o-war and 50m races, along with a 400m event. It was wonderful to see the students fully engaged and enjoying the healthy House competition. Congratulations to Roseby House on winning the overall trophy and to the following students on their individual awards and records set:

Our thoughts are with all our Yr 12 students who have started their trial exams this week. We wish you all the best. The Class of 2020 has demonstrated great leadership and fantastic team work in these unprecedented times to continue the journey of previous cohorts. They have also managed to put together this unique memorable tea towel (see below).

Thank you to the Yr 12 Advisor Mr Eddie Atkins and Assistant Yr 12 Advisor Mrs Rachel Wilson for supporting our students in this final year.

This year students are sitting their trials exams in the New Learning Hub. They have decorated this floor with handmade cards to keep their spirits up.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

The Yr 12 tea towels have arrived and will be distributed in Week 5 of this term via students. There is still a chance to be a part of this initiative and support our Yr 12 students by securing the Class of 2020 handmade tea towel.

Yr 12 HSC and IB Trial Examinations

Last Friday I wrote a letter to all Yr 12 students and families to provide further information about Yr 12 events scheduled for the remainder of the year, and to also provide support and reassurance that the School is here with them and for them during this challenging year. This week our Yr 12 students have been taking their Trial HSC and IB Examinations on the fourth floor of the New Learning Hub, and it has been great to be able to flexibly convert this space into a study and examination centre for our Yr 12 students. When I went up to the fourth floor of the New Learning Hub on Monday morning, I was struck, not by the students milling about in preparation for their first examination, but by the colourful positive and motivational messages posted around the walls of the Learning Hub. These messages were a part of Aleisha Lawrence’s Drama assessment where she surveyed Yr 12 students to share those things in life that spark joy for them or for which they are grateful. A group of Yr 12 students then asked if they could post them around the fourth floor of the New Learning Hub for this fortnight to subtly reinforce these positive messages and reminders to the cohort. It is wonderful to see these physically small but incredibly powerful messages of reassurance and support that we all need during this time coming from the students themselves. I am so proud of our Yr 12 students and the continued leadership and resilience they are showing throughout this year.

Parent Teacher Night Feedback

Over the past two weeks we have held remote Parent Teacher Nights for Yr 7 and 8 students and parents via Zoom. While different than in person meetings, we still believe these meetings have provided valuable academic feedback for students and families. If parents were unable to hold a meeting with teachers for any reason, we would ask them to contact the teacher via email to arrange a time to speak to them. We have also been asking parents to take a few minutes to give feedback on the remote Parent Teacher meetings after their scheduled evening to help us with our planning moving forward. If you have not had an opportunity to provide this feedback, we would ask you to please complete this brief survey here.

Sports Update

This past Saturday, Mr Webber and I greatly enjoyed strolling around the sports fields on a beautiful winter morning at Macquarie University and watching our Football and AFL teams compete in a number of different fixtures. In particular, it was wonderful to see our younger students playing competitive fixtures across the morning and displaying tremendous spirit, effort and teamwork – dispositions that are not only important for them to cultivate on the sporting field but throughout all of their pursuits at school and in life. In particular, I want to congratulate the Junior A Girls Football team for their strong 3-1 victory against Oxley College; the 13A, 14A and 15A Boys Football teams for their hard fought victories against St Pius; and the Junior A Boys AFL team for their victory against St Patrick’s where they pulled away in the fourth quarter to run out convincing winners after a tight struggle for three quarters.

Athletics Carnival

As mentioned last week, we will be running the Secondary School House Athletics Carnival on Friday 14 August at Sydney Olympic Park; however, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Carnival will take on a modified format. As communicated by the Sports Department earlier this week, we will have to limit the number of students participating in the Carnival. Accordingly, we will be taking all Yr 12 students to the Carnival as this will be their final House event during their time at the School, and we want it to be a fun way to celebrate the conclusion of their Trial Examinations; however, the Carnival is optional for students in Yrs 7-11 and we will have a maximum number of students in each Year Group participating in the event. For those students who are not participating in the Athletics Carnival in Yrs 7-11, regular classes will run back on campus. Further information has been communicated by the Sports Department and can be found on the Secondary School Sports page on Redlands Pulse. Please note that no parents will be permitted to attend the Carnival.

Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow we will have our Jeans for Genes Day in the Secondary School. Students may wear mufti and should wear as much denim as they can – the 80’s look will be back! Students who are in mufti are required to make a gold coin donation in their Tutor Groups. All money raised will go towards the vital work being done in the labs at Children’s Medical Research Institute to help the 1 in 20 children living with a genetic disease or birth defect. This week students will be learning more about this work in the Tutor Groups. I would like to thank Ms Shaw, Ms Riley, Ms Abe and the students in the Yr 11 McDouall Green Tutor Group for their efforts in organising this event.

Non-Government Schools Census

The Australian Government provides funding to Australian schools under the Australian Education Act 2013 (AE Act). As a result, Redlands is required to provide the Australian Government with certain information about the school, its staff, and student body to ensure the school’s funding is properly calculated and appropriately managed. This information is collected by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (the department) on behalf of the Australian Government. Further information for parents and carers can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Year 12

Yr 12 Trial Examinations Monday 3 – Thursday 13 July

HSC and IB Timetables can be found on Redlands Pulse.

If your child is unwell, please notify Secondary School Absences, Mr Atkins (YA) and either Mr Randall (HSC) or Mr Taylor (IB) prior to their examination starting. A Doctor’s Certificate will then need to be provided with a completed Illness/Misadventure form located on Redlands Pulse and sent through to the relevant staff member.

Athletics Carnival

The Redlands Athletics Carnival is to scheduled be held on Friday 14 August (Term 3, Week 4) at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre – Warm Up Track. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions the Carnival is limited to a maximum of 400 students. It will be optional for students from Yrs 7-11 and compulsory for Yr 12. The Carnival provides a great opportunity for Yr 12 to come together and lead their Houses and each other in a celebration of sport in what has been an unusual year. It is sure to be a fun time for the cohort and allows them to get outside, dress in House colours and enjoy the spirit of day.

The Carnival will run from 9.30am-2.30pm with students departing school at 8.30am and returning to school by 3.20pm. Yr 12 students are not permitted to drive to and from the venue. There will be no spectators allowed at the event. This will still be an official Carnival counting towards House aggregate points, Age and Division Championship trophies and all records will be valid and ratified. There will be no Canteen at SOPAC available on the day. Students who wish to order a pre-packed lunch for the Carnival are asked to do so through the School Canteen’s Flexischool ordering system (these orders need to be completed by Monday 10 August) or they must arrange their own lunch to bring out. Water bottles are a must too.

If a student has a catch-up exam scheduled for Friday 14 August, then that must take priority.

Year 11

This Week

It has been exciting seeing the smiling faces of our Yr 11 students on Gate Duty in the morning. Well dressed and shining examples of leadership in our community, these students have stepped up to their new responsibilities and I look forward to witnessing their commitment as the year progresses. During our Year Assembly this week, Mr Walker and I reiterated to students the need to adhere to a study regime in preparation for the upcoming Yearly Examinations. Please refer to the resources shared in last week’s Yr 11 Note Day if you are seeking practical tools to support your child in their exam preparation.

Ms Salier kindly gave her time and spoke with students about scholarship opportunities for tertiary study during our Assembly. I encourage students to connect with her if they have interest in these worthwhile opportunities.

We would like to welcome Nicole Dekker and her family to Redlands. Nicole joins us from Singapore and I know that everyone will make the Dekker family feel welcome.

Athletics Carnival

The annual Redlands Athletics Carnival will be held Friday 15 August at the warm up track at Sydney Olympic Park. Due to Covid-19 restrictions this year our carnival will be an option event. Nonetheless we are hoping for wonderful participation from our Yr 11 students.

Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow, Friday 7 August, students are invited to support Jeans for Genes Day by wearing their favourite demin and giving a gold coin donation in support of this charitable day. Students are reminded to refer to page 21 of the School Planner that details appropriate dress for non-school uniform mufti days. I would like to take this opportunity to thank 11MG, Ms Naoko Abe’s Tutor Group for creating a video in support the day. This is a cause close to the hearts of students in 11MG and they have supported Jeans for Genes Day for a number of years.

Athletics Carnival

The Redlands Athletics Carnival is scheduled to be held on Friday 14 August at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the Carnival is limited to a maximum of 400 students. Therefore, this year the Carnival will be optional for Yr 10. Students who are interested in participating in the Carnival need to pre-register for the events prior to the day link here. Preference will be given to those students who have attended training and/or competed as part of the ISA team in 2019. The Carnival will run from 9.30am – 2.30pm with students departing school at 8.30am and returning to school by 3.20pm. There will be no spectators allowed at the event. Registrations will close at 4.00pm Wednesday 12 August.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2020

The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit will be holding a NSW Schools Vaccination clinic on Tuesday 1 September to administer the Meningococcal ACWY single dose vaccine to Yr 10 students. Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents/guardians next week. Consent forms are due on 21 August and are to be handed in to the Secondary School Office. Please include a copy of the vaccination record for any vaccines that your child has received in the last 12 months. This could be a report from your GP, or a letter from you including the name of the vaccine and the date given.

Redlands and the Northern Sydney Public Health Unit have added additional infection control measures within the program to help minimise viral transmission between students, nurses, and school staff.

In preparation of the clinic:

  • Students who are not feeling well must be kept at home. Students who are sick, especially with any acute respiratory symptoms, will not be vaccinated. The nurse will perform a pre-vaccination assessment and determine the student’s suitability to be vaccinated. Catch-up vaccinations for these students can occur at the next clinic.
  • Students will be asked to use hand sanitiser upon entry to the clinic and before returning to their classroom.
  • Students will arrive in smaller groups to prevent close-proximity queuing and physical spacing will be applied.
  • Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.

A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Further information about the Meningococcal AWCY vaccine is available here.

Study Tips

Pru Salter has provided some study tips for students this week:

Making the Most of Your Learning

Learning is not just what you do in the classroom. Study is not just what you do the night before a test. Both of these are ongoing activities that are enhanced by the correct pre and post activities. See which of these 5 Ps you do.

Prepare: This is the stage where you ensure you have all of the materials you need for learning and have completed any pre-tasks such as reading sections of your textbook in advance or any other activities your teacher asks you to complete prior to the class.

Participate:  Engaging in your learning is the best way to start to embed it in your memory and ensure you understand. Having the opportunity to discuss and interact and complete different styles of learning activities really helps your brain to process what you are learning.

Plan: Take the time to look at the assessments for the course and plan when you will start, work on and complete tasks. Anytime you are asked to complete work for class, plan when you will do it and even better write your plan into your diary or online planner.

Practise: One of the best ways to learn is to do practice questions. When you apply what you have learnt to actual questions, you will engage retrieval and cognitive pathways in the brain and reinforce your learning and uncover areas that need extra study.

Pinpoint: After a test or assessment is returned to you, celebrate your successes but also use it to pinpoint areas of weakness. This allows you to then spend time building your strengths in these areas without the pressure of an exam looming.

Sporting Achievements

Congratulations to Cristian Hill and Hugh Sellar who received their first caps in the 1st XV Rugby last weekend, with Cristian running on at Halfback and Hugh Sellar in at Flanker in the forwards. Both boys played above their weight in what, according to their coach, was one of the most physical games he has seen at Redlands. Both played so well that they have been selected to play in the Firsts this coming Saturday against Central Coast Grammar School, with Cristian receiving his first start at Halfback and Hugh coming off the bench.

Pastoral Care and Social Awareness Programs

This week the remainder of the Tutor Groups had a visit by Ms Salier, our Careers Advisor, in which she provided information and resources as to how to write a resume for a job application.

The students have continued learning about the different types of anxiety that some people may experience. They have been working in groups looking at one of the common types of anxiety disorders and producing a presentation to show back to the rest of the group.

In their exploration of the concerns surrounding aged homelessness, the groups have been discovering the lack of affordable housing, including a shortage of public housing.

Parent Reading: Motivating Your Teen

In recent months, many teenagers have found focusing on their studies difficult without the regularity of their normal school schedule. For some young people, the lockdown measures have worsened existing issues they have with school, such as social anxiety or motivation. On top of this, with so much uncertainty, many teenagers are thinking ‘What’s the point?’ when faced with assignments, exams and changing routines. ReachOut offers some sound advice on how in our current local and global landscape, parents can assist in motivating their teen.

Health Reminders for Teens: Is it ok to drink coffee and energy beverages?

Recently, we have noticed an increase in the consumption of coffee and energy drinks in the Yr 8 Group.  This topic will be addressed in our Year Meeting this Friday with other general health reminders for this age. The health risks change after the age of 17. However, at this age, as students are still developing mentally and physically, limiting these items at home and at school is imperative to supporting their focus throughout the day and their growth. Summer Sports Registration

Please click here for the 2020/2021 Summer sport registration.

A lack of completion of this form will mean students will be allocated a sport at the discretion of the Redlands Sports Department. This form will close on Friday 14 August at 12.00pm. Students should first discuss their desired selection with their parents or carers prior to committing to the sport. Information for each representative or non-representative sport can be found on Redlands Pulse. Students must be logged into their school Google account in order to complete the form. Below is the registration process. Students must sign up to at least two track events and two field events in order to attend the Carnival. Registrations will close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 12 August. A confirmed timetable along with details of arrival and departure process will be communicated by Thursday 13 August when all entries and the competitor schedule is confirmed. It is anticipated that due to the reduced numbers, this carnival will run over a shorter period compared to previous years. Any student who is not attending the Carnival will have normal academic classes throughout the day. Junior School Athletics Carnival

Yesterday, in bright sunshine and a brilliant blue sky to match the blue running track at Sydney Olympic Park, the Junior School Athletics Carnival took place and the event that had been marked as TBC at the start of term came to fruition.

Whilst it was disappointing not to have parent spectators or Secondary School House Captains in attendance due to the restrictions in place, we were thrilled that Junior School students were able to take part in this annual event and enjoy the spirit of House participation and competition. We were also delighted to welcome our Principal and Deputy Principal, Mr Webber and Ms McGarry, for much of the day.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated with such energy, House spirit and enjoyment. It is always a joy to see the stands devoid of students during the day as all of the students immerse themselves fully and particular congratulations to Roseby House who won the overall trophy.

Alongside this, I acknowledge the efforts and collaboration of teachers, coaches and medical staff who  enabled the event to run so well and with such high levels of student engagement. On behalf of the students, my sincere thanks are extended to our Sports Department led by Mr Dunne, who led much of the detailed pre-Carnival preparation in this climate and oversaw the day’s events.

Cocurricular Clubs on Tuesdays

With Student-led Conferences in Weeks 4 and 5, the only Clubs that will continue in these weeks will be the ones as listed below, where we have external providers:

  • Young Investigators Science
  • Debating
  • Chess (Fridays)

The conferences also do not impact any Performing Arts after school activities.

Jeans for Genes – Friday 7 August

A reminder that tomorrow sees Redlands supporting the Jeans for Genes charity across all sections of our School. Students are encouraged to wear mufti with some denim and any type of closed shoes including trainers, in return for a gold coin donation.

As with all mufti days, there are expectations of appropriate dress which are outlined in the Student Planner.

Asking for Feedback … from Your Children?

I have been pondering over an interesting article I read this week related to performance reviews which are often part of the routine of our working lives. As staff at Redlands, individual professional growth plans are part of our ongoing commitment to self-reflection and self-improvement and connected to this, we are looking forward capturing our students’ voices later this term as all students in Yrs 5-12 take part in an anonymous feedback survey associated with teaching and learning as they experience and see it.

The article by Scott Edinger then goes on to explore the notion of parents asking their children for feedback at home on how to be a better parent. While being the best parent for my children is something I regularly think about, getting feedback from them on this matter hasn’t been…….yet.

Following similar principles to our workplace, Edinger suggests that upward feedback from our children can be a great way to help us identify ways in which we can improve as a parents; as well as also knowing what to continue to do. He advocates asking your children the following three questions and sharing the questions with them in advance:

  1. What do I do that you like or that you’d like to see more of?
  2. What do I do that you don’t like or has a negative impact on you?
  3. What would make me a better parent?

As I read the questions, I also saw the opportunity to flip the questions for my children to reflect on themselves too! But, the emphasis was on the need to actively engage in the listening part of this process and also without judgment. Then, when it’s your turn to talk, to be calm and open, mindful that your children might be taking a risk in sharing their feelings. Based on the feedback you receive, you would then probably have some ideas about what you can do differently.

In recent months, we have all experienced very adjusted lives, both at work and at home. I hope this might serve as a prompt for you as it has for me and just as feedback helps me in the context of growth at School, I look forward to getting a better sense of how to be a better parent; a far more important role than any I might play at work.

Writing Success – Oscar Pearce

I was delighted to receive notification this morning that Yr 6 student, Oscar Pearce, has been shortlisted for this year’s Mosman Youth Awards in Literature. Oscar submitted a poem and along with two Yr 8 Redlands students, he has received an invitation for the official awards presentation. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s winners will be announced via an Instagram Live event but we congratulate Oscar on this recognition.

Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow we will have our Jeans for Genes Day in the Preparatory School. Students may wear mufti and should wear as much denim as they can – the 80’s look will be back! Students who are in mufti are required to make a gold coin donation. Sometimes it can be overwhelming with the amount of charities needing assistance and at times our lives can become so busy that we forget to empathise with others. Empathy is a very important life skill to teach our young learners, so I encourage you to discuss why we support the Children’s Medical Research. Click here to watch a video that explains genetics simply to young children.

The statistics that every minute 12 children are born with a birth defect or incurable disease are heartbreaking. A simple gold coin is all it takes for our students to feel like they are not only thinking of others but making a tangible difference.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

A reminder that the Premier’s Reading Challenge needs to be finalised by Friday 28 August. Please ensure you have uploaded your child’s reading log to the website. If you have a query or need assistance, please contact the Lucy Hill Library staff.

Clubs

Prep School Clubs are off and running and we had a very successful first week back. All students enjoyed their activities. Thank you to families for being flexible in the new 3.45-4.00pm car line procedure after Clubs. Just a little reminder that if a teacher is unwell on Clubs day, you will be notified by Mrs Hunt to pick your child up in normal car line.

Calendar Update

As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, our Prep School parent/teacher interviews will now be in Weeks 7 and 8. An email will be sent to you shortly outlining the process and Zoom booking schedule. This term we will be using quite a flexible time frame which hopefully will make the interview sessions more accessible to our families.

Community Vodcasts

After listening to our Prep families, we heard the common message that you would like more information about certain skills and learning that occurs in the classroom to assist conversation at home. To this end, from next Thursday we will be posting a weekly Vodcast to our Redlands Pulse pages. The vodcasts will be a short video that will cover a certain skill, message or information that our classroom teachers would like to share. Vodcasts will be posted on Thursdays onto either all Redlands Pulse pages or specific Year Group pages. I will provide you with the link to the Redlands Pulse page each Note day for easy access.

Please remember these vodcasts are only a snippet of information for you, there is no expectation on families to be teaching this skill at home, that’s our job here at school!

AIS Spelling Professional Development

Next week our Junior Campus teaching staff will resume their Primary Spelling Professional Development sessions with Ms Jill Ryman from the AIS. The Primary Spelling has been developed by the Association of Independent Schools as a whole school professional initiative to support K-6 teachers to teach spelling effectively. The content of sessions is underpinned by empirical research about the acquisition of spelling skills. The research clearly articulates not only what the critical components of spelling instruction should include but how to go about providing the instruction in a systematic and explicit way.

Around the Prep This Week

Sadly, as we still can’t have parents on campus, I wanted to share some images from around the Prep Campus with you to hopefully help the connection between you and us!

Our Prep Art Gallery has started to be populated this week. This is a sharing space where classes can displaying their art works in all stages of completion. The idea is to not just show the best pieces but to use this space to share the process of art making and those that have improved their skills. This space will change every few weeks to other Key Learning Areas, so watch this space!

In our Prep Reception area we have a new display board. This area now houses a lovely display titled ‘I’m not dirty, I’m learning’. Full credit goes to Jacqui Lofgren for designing and creating this display space for us.

This week our Yr 2 chickens arrived. There are many excited students (and teachers) watching the fascinating process of chickens emerging from their shells. Such an incredible learning experience and we can’t wait to follow their development over the next few weeks.

Every morning I have enjoyed watching our learners start their day out on the oval for a run and exercise. Research supports the idea of starting the school day with fresh air and exercise provides enormous benefit to the learning that follows. Bright red cheeks and happy smiles is a great start to the day.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Jeans for Genes

Just a reminder Redlands House will be taking part in Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 7 August. If your child attends Preschool on this day, students may wear mufti and should wear as much denim as they can to Preschool and bringing a gold coin to donate to the boxes on the sign in table. Jeans for Genes Day raises money to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute to discover treatments and cures for childhood illnesses.

Click here to watch a video that explains genetics simply to young children.

Sports Day

On Wednesday 12 August, our Seniors and Transition Gold students will participate in a mini sports carnival on the Prep School Oval. After morning tea, the children will walk to the Oval with their teachers and classmates, they will have the opportunity to engage in a range of fun activities and games. Sadly this year, parents will not be able to spectate. We will be sure to fully document this fun event and post some great photos and videos to Storypark.

COVID-19 Sport Protocols

All Redlands Representative and Non-Representative Sport programs have resumed under certain conditions. Each step towards the resumption of sport, as well as the operations of competitions is governed by safety to all involved, including players, coaches, officials and spectators. As the competition progresses, it is recognised that protocols may also change in response to government, competition, venue, school locations and wider health regulations.

The majority of our school sporting competition is within the Independent Sporting Association (ISA). It is acknowledged that each school may have some varying protocols appropriate for their specific communities and sporting venues, including our own.

Redlands Sport Venue Protocols

The following protocols apply to the following venues: Dunnet Hall, Lang Gym, Junior School Oval, Redlands House Courts, Macquarie University Playing fields, Cammeray Tennis Centre, Wheatleigh Street Tennis Courts and Primrose Park Ovals.

  • There will no canteen, BBQ facilities or post match functions at venues.
  • A limit of one spectator per player is permitted to attend all Redlands venues.
  • A COVID-safe coordinator will be provided at home venues and will direct visitors to allocated drop off zones or parking areas where applicable.
  • All students, officials and coaches will be registered upon entry via a SMS system. Please SMS, RED, {SPORT SPECTATING}, FIRST NAME via SMS to this number 0488 825 971. Eg. RED FOOTBALL, JOHN. Details of this will be provided at the entry of the venue.
  • All teams must have hand sanitiser with them to use before and after all games.
  • There will be no shaking hands and huddles.
  • There will only be limited access to change room and toilet facilities.
  • Allocated spectator zones will be marked out, when and where applicable.

Athletics Carnival

We are excited to announce that the Redlands Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 14 August (Term 3, Week 4) at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre – Warm Up Track. The Carnival will take on a different form in 2020. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the Carnival is limited to a maximum of 400 students. This Carnival will be optional for students from Yrs 7-11 and compulsory for Yr 12. Any student interested in attending will need to pre-register for the events prior to the day link here. Preference will be given to those students who have attended training and/or competed as part of the ISA team in 2019.

The Carnival will run from 9.30am-2.30pm with students departing school at 8.30am and returning to school by 3.20pm.

There will be no spectators allowed at the event. The Carnival will still be an official Carnival counting towards House aggregate points, age and division champion trophies and all records will be valid and ratified.

There will be no canteen available on the day. Students who wish to order a pre-packed lunch for the Carnival are asked to do so through the School Canteen’s Flexischool ordering system (these orders need to be completed by Monday 10 August). Students must bring their own water bottles. Staff will be provided lunch packs on the day.

Come and visit the Sports office at recess or lunch time if you have any questions regarding events or the registration process.

A confirmed timetable along with details of arrival and departure process will be communicated by Wednesday 12 August when all entries and the competitor schedule is confirmed. However, a draft carnival program can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Any student who is not attending the Carnival will have normal academic classes throughout the day.

Thank you for your assistance while we work through the steps in preparing for the Carnival in the current COVID-19 environment.

Summer Sport Registration

Please note registrations for summer sport will become live from Monday 3 August. Students will be sent a Google link to register. Every student from Yrs 7-11 must complete this link no matter if they intend on registering for a rep sport, non rep sport, dance or an exemption.

Students should discuss their preferred choice with their parents or guardians, however, please note that only students can register for the sport through their school Google account.

AFL

Boys

Match Report – Boys A Team vs St Patrick’s A: Mr Ben Carlyon

A fantastic team effort from our A team saw Redlands edge past St Patrick’s in the final quarter. In a seesawing contest, we had to show a great deal of effort, focus and teamwork to get over the line against a committed and enthusiastic opposition. Isaac Brooks was in everything and controlled the back half of the ground. Henry Charles showed his leadership and poise in the middle of the ground, whilst a newcomer to AFL, Raff Heard, was everywhere in just his second game of AFL. It was terrific to get our first win for the season and we look forward to another strong showing this weekend against the Shore School.

Girls

Match Report – Redlands vs Canada Bay Cannons: Mr Ben Carlyon

Our girls team faced a tough opponent on Sunday. The score line wasn’t a true reflection on the effort showed by the majority of the team. Eva was our stand out performer, giving her all in a variety of positions. Angela ran hard all day and moved the ball out of the middle, whilst it was great to see two first timers in Jules and Chloe work into the game and try hard with their energy and effort. Despite the score line, it was great to see Redlands keep persevering and kick some late goals in the final quarter. We’ll keep focusing on our skills during our training sessions as well as working hard to ensure we all defend when the opposition has the ball. Looking forward to our next challenge on Sunday.

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday 6.25-7.45am with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Students are required to sign up via iLearn and the Secondary Sports page.

The Fitness Centre is the perfect place for our High Performance athletes and students who are looking to trial for A or 1sts to prepare themselves physically for the season to come. I would recommend that all students looking to build their strength and speed for the Summer Sport seasons attend these sessions. Please speak to Mr Gooding directly or email on jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Football

Boys

The boys had some mixed results over the weekend. In what was the first home game, the majority of the teams took on St Pius X College, the 1st XI unfortunately went down 0-3 in what was a tightly contested match. The 2nd XI boys had a strong 3-1 victory against Oakhill College. These boys were extremely spirited throughout the match which was great to see. The 16A boys had a strong win against St Andrews, coming off last weeks bye taking the match 6-0. The 15As match was a cracking game to see, both Pius and Redlands have had a strong competitive history, and this game was no different with Redlands scoring an early goal in the first half and held on strong to take the match 1-0. The 15Bs have been very spirited this season, after a close match last week they were no match for the Pius B team. The 14As had a great win on Saturday, scoring five goals. The 13s are looking to build on their strong start to the year, with another two solid performances, with the As scoring a goal to take the match 2-1, and the Bs had a strong win 5-0. All teams will be looking again to build on strong performances this weekend with all teams at Macquarie University.

This week at Macquarie University we will again be allowing one spectator per player at the fields and ask that those spectators observe and adhere to the COVID-19 protocols and policies that will be in place.

Girls

It was great to see the girls playing at home in Round 2. The 1sts unfortunately did not get to play in Round 2, as Chevalier forfeited the game. The 2nds had a great game against the Oxley 1sts. With both teams having some impressive passages of play, it was an exciting contest with the score at 3-3 in the final minutes. A last-minute penalty to Oxley finished the game as a 4-3 win to Oxley but it was a great effort from the Redlands 2nds. The Inter A game was another fantastic match up against Chevalier, both teams played some great football. With a 1-1 result, it was a great battle for both teams. The Junior As had a double header, the first game against Oxley and the second game against Chevalier. A great team effort in the first game against Oxley resulted in a 3-1 win. The girls had to back up in another game, with another great effort finishing with a 2-2 draw against Chevalier. Overall it was a great day for Redlands Girls Football with some promising signs for the future.

Hockey

The 1sts were up against Chevalier who have been known as a force in Division 1 Hockey for a number of years. The game finished with a 3-2 loss, however, the girls should be very proud of their effort and the improvement they have shown against such a strong team. The 2nds were up against the SACS 2nds. It was a very close game, both teams playing some great hockey, with SACS having the upper hand at the final whistle and the score line at 0-1. The Juniors played against BMGS and continue to go from strength to strength. Finishing with a 7-1 win, they are proving to be one of the stronger teams in their division.

Netball

ISA

Another great round of ISA Netball last weekend with some closely fought matches. Congratulations to our Inter B team who had another strong win at Chevalier College. Our Senior 2nds also secured an excellent win against Chevalier. Our 1st VII, Inter A and Inter C teams played closely contested matches, and although they didn’t come away with the win, the grit and determination they showed on court was fantastic and they pushed the opposition right to the final whistle.

This weekend sees Redlands first home round of the season with all eight ISA teams playing across the morning. Please note, all Redlands home games this year will be played across Dunnet Hall and Lang Gym. There will be no games played at NBISC this year. Please check Redlands Pulse for the venue and game time for each team and ensure all players arrive at the venue 30 minutes before the game time.

Redlands are permitting one spectator per player at both Dunnet Hall and Lang Gym this weekend. Please refer to Redlands Pulse for the Covid-19 spectator protocols which includes details for spectator registration on the morning.

A reminder all players must have their own water bottle with them and no food is to be shared before, during or after a game. We ask that all players arrive at the venue dressed in their Netball uniform and ready to take the court to reduce the use of change room facilities. All players are asked to remove all jewellery prior to entering their venue on a Saturday.

NSNA

Last Saturday saw another great round for our NSNA teams with some closely fought matches across all Year Groups. Congratulations to our 8B and 7Cs who had fantastic wins over Loreto and Wenona. Once again, a big thank you to the players and parents for following the many guidelines set out by NSNA to ensure the competition can go ahead, it is greatly appreciated

This Saturday sees Round 4 of the competition taking place. All teams will play at the same time as last week, but please check the fixture on Redlands Pulse to confirm the court number.

Please ensure all teams, both NSNA and ISA, regularly check their emails from Ms Howard as well as Redlands Pulse for the most up to date information regarding the Netball season. Any player absences (both training and games) need to be sent to Ms Howard prior to the game or training so that coach and supervising staff members can be informed.

Rugby

Redlands Under 13s – Match Report

The Redlands Under 13s started their season off in perfect form recording a resounding win against rivals Oxley. From the opening kick-off, the Redlands boys looked to outwork their opposition with some wonderful early carries by captain Jesse Forrest combining with the all-round efforts in defence and attack of Max Perry and Dextor Parton. The greatest strength of this team was their ability to maintain possession, tiring down the opposition and then releasing the speed in our backline.

Oxley came out firing in the second half, their forwards looking to build the momentum needed to forge a comeback. For the next ten minutes Redlands were in an arm wrestle, both teams fighting to get back on top. Redlands needed a spark and they got it when, off an attacking scrum, Rory McMillian danced down the side line leaving defenders clutching at thin air. He was eventually tackled inches from the try line and with a quick pick and go, Max Perry scored his second try of the match. After that effort Redlands were able to run out a convincing victory 27-7, gaining the bonus point along the way.

The efforts of the whole team, the players who started the match and the players coming off the bench, was fantastic and the support from the side lines was great to watch. This will be a wonderful squad to watch as they come up against tougher competition each week. Player of the Match – Max Perry.

For the matches this weekend we have our first Home fixtures with Central Coast Grammar. CCGS are traditionally very strong across all grades and will offer tough competition across the whole day. Game times are as follows:

08.00am – Redlands Under 13s vs CCGS
09.00am – Redlands Under 14s vs CCGS
10.00am – Redlands Under 15s vs CCGS
11.00am – Redlands 1stXV vs CCGS

Please be aware that for this weekend there is a strict one spectator / one student policy.

Tennis

On Saturday, five of our ISA Tennis teams travelled to Gosford to play against Central Coast Grammar School. The First’s started a bit slow but found their groove pretty quickly and came home with a 6-2 win. Our Seconds played St Spyridon at their home venue in a close match with Redlands just missing out on the win (3-5). Teams 3, 6, 9 all had exciting matches with the result ending in a 4-4 draw but all teams fell short of taking home the win by just a few games. Teams 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 all had dominant wins playing consistent tennis and hitting plenty of winning shots. The Central Coast convener made a special mention of Piper and Samantha in Team 9 who paired extremely well in their first ever ISA doubles match of the season together, both demonstrating excellent teamwork and communication on the court and working hard for every point. It is great to see all our social league and development squad students enjoying their matches and skill development sessions. For wet weather updates please follow @RedlandsSport.

Waterpolo

The Juniors had some great games on Friday night at Waterpolo, with a number of kids still learning the ropes. The boys had two strong games with a tough loss against SACS, but bounced back to a close loss to St Lukes. The girls had a much better turn out, coming up against Brigidine for the second time in two weeks. The girls looked good progressing well but unfortunately they went down 3-7. This was a huge improvement on last week’s results.

“Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill”. Muhammad Ali

Athletics Carnival

Our annual Junior School Athletics Carnival took place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in beautiful conditions on Wednesday. In the second of our big three carnivals, there was much excitement leading up to the day from all students. Credit to the students for maintaining their social distance in the stands, the checkerboard seating was a new thing for our carnival but that didn’t stop some great House spirit being demonstrated throughout the day. The House that stood out in this area was Cowper who, led by Lola Brasler and Digby Scott, danced and cheered their way to some bonus House spirit points.

With the entrant number system used in conjunction with the timing gates and photo finish, students were able to see their times and overall rankings on the giant screen as they finished their race. The inclusion of some new events, specifically the 50m sprint on the back straight, allowed for greater participation. In pre-marshalling we had our four way tug of war competition with Dumolo winning quite a few of the Age Group competitions.

New Records

  • Senior Girls Relay team (Cowper) set a new record 1:03.07 for the 4x100m (Lexi Rowe, Annalyse Rowe, Liliana Halfen and Lola Brasler)
  • 11 Yrs Boys Long Jump – Joel Daily recorded a 4.20m leap beating the previous record by 1cm from 2007
  • 12 Yrs Boys Discus – Joshua Colpani recorded a distance of 30.34m beating the previous record of 26.29m from 2012

Congratulations to these new record holders, they will receive a certificate of commendation at our Sports prize giving day next term.

A big thank you to the students with their Sports Uniform on point. Students had the opportunity to dress it up with head bands, hair ribbons and capes. These were complemented by multiple cans of hair spray, face paint and pom-poms. The Yr 6 students were able to wear the new House race bibs but more will be ordered next year for all students. The ability to identify their peers representing their House from the grandstand really added to the Carnival atmosphere.

With Cowper winning the Carnival for the previous five years, there was a huge reaction when the winning House was announced. Congratulations to Roseby on their win led by Sophie McDonald and Roy Rivera.

Winning House

1st Place           Roseby 1072

2nd Place          Dumolo 909

3rd Place           Cowper 908

4th Place            McDouall 896

A breakdown of points and heats will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse but it is worth noting that this total included all participation points from the field events trials held over the last two weeks and all the finals today in our new events along with Turbo Javelin and Discus. Ribbons for field events were distributed on Thursday at school.

Video Highlights

With parents unable to attend the Carnival due to COVID restrictions, a video can be found here. Special mention to Mr Sawa who was able to get some footage at speed on his electric skateboard whilst balancing and holding a phone!

Team Movement

At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on three main criteria:

Ability              in direct comparison to other students on the team

Attendance  any student who misses two games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

Attitude         this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and students have been reminded to check these online team lists each Thursday night to see if there are any changes from training the day before.

These enriching experiences took place over a Zoom link with New York during class time and will become part of our students devising approaches for future performance development.

Redlander News

Both Angus Konsti (2016) and Lochie Kent (2015) feature in work from NIDA this week.

Lochie Kent (Drama Captain 2015) features in NIDA’s Ghost Lights Project. As all performance venues across the world went dark during the COVID-19 crisis, the old tradition of the ghost light was revived – leaving on a single naked bulb on a stand to ensure that an empty theatre is never left in total darkness. Some of theatre’s great characters perform iconic monologues. Untethered from their plays and plots, they have broken out. They roam the empty theatres, trying to connect once again. But being lost, they are also free… and appear in guises that might surprise as they speak their new-found truths. Lachie’s performance as Puck can be seen here, with dates and times for the full performances at 7.30pm on 6, 8 and 9 August and 11.00am on 8 and 9 August.

Angus Konsti (Redlander 2016) features in NIDA’s Roundabout an interactive farce for the digital age this week.

6 characters. 3 bodies. 1 meddlesome audience. So many things could go wrong. Science fiction meets comedy as three young school leavers in an awkward love triangle meet on the video platform Twitch. In the chat channel are three skylarking digital humans who yearn to be made flesh for the first time in 13,000 years. With the help of the audience they possess the actors.

The characters play musical chairs, hopping from body to body while interacting with the audience in real time. Will the audience keep up with the speed of change? Will the actors be consumed by the personalities of the digital characters?

Roundabout is written and directed by Primetime Emmy Award-winning storyteller and science fiction writer Sean Stewart. Begin your journey into Roundabout on the show’s TwitchFacebook and Twitter pages.

8.00pm on 4, 5 and 8 August and 11.00am on 7, 8 and 9 August. Tickets from $0–$25. (Content warning – M15+ adult themes, flashing lights).

Student Expectations in the Rehearsal Room

During rehearsals, all students are expected to adhere to the recommendations pertaining to social distancing expectations.

In consideration of these guidelines, it is required that all students:

  • Bring their own instrument (if applicable) to school for use in instrumental rehearsals
  • Are organised with their own scores and repertoire as issued by Music Administration.

The Music Department has organised all rehearsals and organised resources to ensure that all students rehearse independently and with their own stand. Under no circumstance are students to be sharing a music stand with another student.

Hygiene in the Music Setting and Student Expectations

As part of our return to group settings, this continues to be a well-considered aspect of our overall planning and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and rehearsal spaces to adhere to distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Choral Program – Week 3

Throughout this week, it has been wonderful to welcome our singers back to the Choral Rehearsal room. At the moment, choirs will be alternating through small sectional rehearsals and combined groups, facilitated in Redlands Hall to allow for distancing measures between singers.

The planning of our modified format for rehearsals has considered, first and foremost, the safety of our choristers who are currently enrolled in the Choral program and the staff who are responsible for leading our choirs each week. For the time being, due to arrangements based around current numbers, we have decided not to process new choral enrolments at this stage.

Term 3 Music Program Overview

More detailed information outlining the specifics of weekly rehearsal arrangements and expectations surrounding student safety will continue to be communicated by Music Administrators each fortnight. For any additional enquiries or questions please contact the respective offices.

For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece will not be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist. Please note: Entries are only accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.
