Boys
Fort Dunnet continues to hold strong after our first home games for the season. Our 5/6 E,F and G teams all posted strong wins over Barker and Cranbrook and showed some really slick teamwork across the grades. Our H team had a chance to break a nailbiting deadlock in the dying seconds after a really tight tussle but had a volley of shots rim and bounce out.
Our A – D teams took on Cranbrook at Cranbrook and, whilst the results were mixed, taking both A and C games, our Bs tallied a massive 40 points in a narrow loss. Needless to say their scoring is a highlight and there’ll be some training effort committed to defense this week!
Yrs 3 and 4 teams looked super impressive last week and our B team in particular showed Scots opponents that speed and teamwork trumps most anything else.
All matches this week are as per the original schedule on Redlands Pulse.
All players will need a numbered Basketball singlet available for purchase or hire from the Uniform Shop before matches begin. Students should also wear their Basketball singlets to practice on Wednesdays. Singlets are reversible and can be used by coaches to help determine teams for practice drills and scrimmage matches.
Times for our Yr 3 and 4 Basketball matches look confusing this week, but are correct as per the schedule and Lang Gym is our home court venue on Redlands Senior Campus.
Girls
Our girls had a great first hitout last week in particular our 6 Blue team who had a great win over Abbotsleigh. Girls Basketball is a short season and our teams really need to hit the ground running. Our Yr 5 Gold team were excellent also and unlucky to go down narrowly after leading for the majority of the match. Our Yr 3/4 basketballers scored ten points which is a great start from a whole team of novice basketballers. The learning curve is steep at this early stage of their careers and they looked to have a blast doing it.
Before school Basketball training is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 7.15am in Dunnet Hall. Players from any grade and mixed or Girls Basketball are welcome to attend.
Cricket
Our cricketers learned a lesson in accurate bowling last week. Ironing out the cobwebs, our boys bowled too wide and, despite taking plenty of wickets, couldn’t restrict the Barker scoring to less than a hundred. Chasing a big tally, our boys threw their bats around, but Barker were tight. The boys take on Newington Lindfield this Saturday at 7.30am at Koola Park.
Tennis
Tennis rankings for this week have been finalised and our players ranked 1-8 will be playing against Scots this week at Cammeray at 8.00am (7.30am for warm up). Players holding rankings 9-16 have no match this week but will play intra squad matches at Cammeray Tennis Club the following Saturday from 8.00-10.00am. All info regarding rankings and matches will be emailed to players and their parents.
Surf Education
Beginning Monday 28 October, all students in Yrs 3 – 6 (Monday Yr 5, Tuesday Yr 4, Thursday Yr 3, Friday Yr 6) will be participating in our annual Surf Education program. We will be again using the services of the Surf Life Saving School Australia and their qualified team of SLSA instructors. These instructors will teach the students for their two week program at Freshwater Beach. The program is fully endorsed by the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia and has the support of the local councils and the NSW Education Standards Authority.
The program will focus on fitness, beach games, surfboard skills, surf safety, ocean conditions, rips, tides, currents and the overall education on the dangers of swimming and surfing in the ocean. The older students will also be instructed in basic board, first aid and swimming rescues.
This week all students enjoyed a one hour theory presentation by the branch leaders of SLSA. We look forward to putting into practice next week all the things discussed and learnt during their very informative presentation. Any questions please email srobinson@redlands.nsw.edu.au.
