Issue 32 2019 - 24 Oct 2019

From the Principal

On Monday evening, the Edwards Auditorium in the John Roberts Centre reverberated with wonderful music performances from our Secondary School students during the final of the 2019 Instrumental Competition. This year’s competition was won by Yr 8 student Kokoro Sawa who performed exceptionally on the Marimba. We congratulate Kokoro, who was also the Yrs 7-8 winner, and bass guitarist Izaac Nisbet who won the Yrs 9-10 category, and all finalists on their very fine performances.

Congratulations also to 2019 Arts Captain Asha Boswarva who has been nominated for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Best New Female Talent award for her role in Lambs of God. To receive this nomination is such a wonderful achievement, especially for a school student.

Finally, I wish to congratulate Mathematics teacher, Dr Amanda Michels, who has been awarded the prestigious UNSW Teacher Fellowship in Mathematics for 2020. Next year Dr Michels will be tutoring First Year UNSW Mathematics students and will provide insights to UNSW on teaching issues. Upon returning to Redlands in 2021, she will be able to impart her knowledge about UNSW Mathematics teaching practices, enabling us to better prepare students for their tertiary education. Dr Michaels, whose doctorate was granted by Oxford University for work in the field of Particle Physics, is eminently qualified in both Mathematics and Physics.  After beginning a career in Finance, she decided that her chosen career should be secondary teaching, much to our delight.

School Security

We take our responsibility to provide a safe school environment seriously. The School requires parents, guardians and carers to observe the School’s security procedures, particularly for the protection of students from direct contact with those outside the School during school hours.

This means that parent or carer visitors to Redlands must sign in (upon arrival) and out (upon departure) of the relevant Reception office on each campus and wear visitor identification whilst on the grounds. Thank you for your cooperation with this important campus safety process and condition of enrolment.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for Redlands House/Transition Gold are now on the Prep/RH Upcoming Events Note Day page.

This Redlands House/Transition Gold page will consist of general information from the Head of Preparatory School.

Native Bees

The Preschool has a native beehive that hangs on the fence of the playground. Elke Haege, a landscape architect and native bee specialist, visited the Preschool today to clean and maintain this habitat. These lovely small, stingless native bees allow the children see them in action and how they work to pollinate our native plants. The children were very curious and enjoyed watching Elke as she worked. Native bees only produce a small amount of honey, but the children were eager to have a taste.

Kindergarten and Transition Gold Orientation Day

On Wednesday 13 November, students moving to Kindergarten or Transition Gold in 2020 at Redlands, will be attending their Orientation Day. The day will commence as normal with a regular drop off at the Preschool, where Redlands House staff will collect students and accompany them to the Prep area for the day. The teachers will tailor the day for the students, whereby they will be able to play in the playground, eat morning tea and lunch, and explore the classrooms. This will enable staff to familiarise themselves with all children as they participate in the stimulating Kindergarten and Transition environments. Students can be collected at the end of their day at the Preschool. Students who are leaving Redlands at the conclusion of 2019 will remain at Redlands House on this day and participate in a variety of experiences and activities.

2020 Kindergarten Information Session and Morning Tea

On Wednesday 13 November at 9.15-10.00am, there will be an Information Session and Morning Tea for all 2020 Kindergarten parents in the Arnold Library on the Junior Campus.

Redlands House Seniors and Transition Gold End of Year Concert

To celebrate the end of the year, our Senior and Transition students perform a concert for parents, families and friends. A dress rehearsal will be held on Wednesday 20 November, with the concert being held on Wednesday 27 November. More details can be found on Upcoming Events.

Diwali Celebration

On Wednesday 30 October the Preschool will be celebrating Diwali. Diwali, known as the “festival of lights”, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair. Redlands House will have activities and experiences for the children to participate in on this day. Please let your child’s teacher know if you would like to help with this celebration, or if you any suggestions.

Nutrition Seminar

On Friday 1 November, we are delighted to have Kate Flynn from Orbit for You give a seminar on the importance of nutrition for children. Kate is passionate about educating people about their bodies and she regularly writes and lectures for major institutions on Health and Well Being. We all know the important role nutrition plays in a child’s physical and mental development. Kate will assist us to understand how to provide the best start for our children and develop healthy eating habits. The seminar will take place in the Lucy Hill Library in the Preparatory School at 9.00am. We hope you can join us for this wonderful opportunity.

Self-Reflection

At our Term 4 Welcome Assembly I spoke to the Yrs 7-10 students in attendance about the importance of self-reflection and have shared some of this talk below.

“Critical and honest self-reflection can be hard and is something that we might instead choose to avoid. But it is exactly this type of self-examination which can be so personally beneficial and can lead to positive and meaningful growth and change.

However, sometimes when we are asked to self-reflect, we are not honest with ourselves. Maybe we are too hard on ourselves and do not celebrate and embrace our strengths. Or we gloss over our weaknesses or the challenges we are facing and pretend everything is fine. Or we do not accept responsibility for our actions and blame others – parents, teachers, peers – for when things don’t work out how we had hoped.

Personally, I have always tried to live by the words from the opening of the Serenity Prayer, as a guide to self-reflection, which reads:

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.”

But sometimes this serenity, courage and wisdom can be hard to obtain. Sometimes, when we critically self-reflect, it can be quite confusing and we can even find that our strengths or our virtues can also be our weaknesses.

I want you to pause and think about this. What are some of your strengths, your virtues, your positive characteristics? Can some of your strengths also be weaknesses?

For example, on the positive you might be independent but on the negative you might then refuse to accept the help of others. Or, on the positive you might have high expectations of your self and be highly conscientious, but on the negative you might be a perfectionist who is overly critical of your self or others. Or, on the positive, you might be highly organised and disciplined, but on the negative you might lack flexibility and can’t adapt to change.

Upon my own self-reflection, I know that a possible strength of mine can be my passion and enthusiasm; however, I also am aware I need to be cautious not to let my emotions cloud my judgement.

What we can aim to do is strive for balance. Aristotle said that our virtues should lie between the excessive extreme on one side and the deficient extreme on the other. So, we should strive for that middle ground, where we are building on our positive characteristics, while being aware to limit the possible negative side of that same characteristic.

So, I hope you use some time in Tutor Groups this morning, as well as the other opportunities that arise this term, to engage in proper self-reflection. Don’t be afraid to be honest with yourself. Have the courage to change the things you can. And strive for balance where will you allow your strengths to flourish, without becoming weaknesses.”

Yr 11 Camp

Last week our Yr 11 (moving into Yr 12) students had their annual camp in the Snowy Mountains where students engaged in a week of outdoor education and leadership training activities in separate groups before all students and teachers returned to our High Country Campus on Thursday evening for a dinner and celebration. This final dinner was meant to not only culminate their experiences in the bush, but also to signify the completion of Yr 11 and their transition into Yr 12. It was a wonderful evening to suitably conclude a special week which signifies an important rite of passage for these students as they have taken on the mantle of student leadership returning to the School this week as Yr 12 leaders.

Yrs 7-10 Yearly Examinations

Over the next few weeks our Yrs 7-10 students will be sitting their Yearly Examinations. We hope that students keep these assessments of their learning in the proper perspective. While on the one hand we want students to put forth their best effort and utlise the opportunity to effectively illustrate their learning in these assessments, on the other hand we do not want this single measure of their learning to be built up so much that it causes them undue concern or worry. There are different arrangements for each Year Group during their examination weeks and separate communications, along with exam timetables, have been communicated to each Year Group. We wish our Yrs 7-10 students all the best on these upcoming Yearly Examinations.

2019 Redlands Instrumental Competition

On Monday evening, the annual Redlands Instrumental Competition was held in the Edwards Auditorium, showcasing sophisticated levels of musical expression by all finalists as they explored a wide variety of styles and performance contexts. I would like to commend all students participating and their instrumental teachers for their ongoing tuition and support as the overall standard was outstanding. A special congratulations to Division 1 (Yrs 7 and 8) winner Kokoro Sawa and runner-up Yumi Konetzny and Division 2 winner Izaac Nisbet and runner-up Annabelle Swan. A special congratulations to Kokoro Sawa for being named the overall winner of the competition.

House Theatresports Competition

Yesterday evening was the House Theatresports Competition where students from Yrs 7-11 competed for their Houses in a variety of Theatresports games. It was great to see so many students competing, many of whom had never competed in Theatresports before. I would like to especially acknowledge the new House Captains who showed tremendous House spirit on the evening; the event was yet another example of our growing House spirit in the Secondary School. I would like to congratulate McDouall for winning on the evening in a very close contest.

Volunteer Thank You

Last Thursday was the Volunteer Thank You Evening. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend in person as I was attending Yr 11 Camp. However, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation and thanks to all of the parents who support the Secondary School in so many different ways. Whether it be through the RPFA, cocurricular Friends of Groups, assisting in Learning Plus or as a Year Group volunteer, our wonderful parent community plays such an important role in so many different areas. I have said many times that our strength is our community at Redlands and the positive partnership between School and home continues to foster this strength.

Yr 12 Parent Thank You

On behalf of all of the Secondary School staff, I would like to thank the Yr 12 parents for their generous parting gift of a new coffee machine for the staff common room. I can assure them that it has been appreciated (and heavily used) by the staff this term.

Yr 12 HSC and IB Examinations

Last Thursday our current HSC students commenced their final HSC examinations while our IB cohort finish their classes this week and begin their final IB Examinations on Monday 4 November. We wish all of our graduating Yr 12 students all the best on these final examinations.

Opal Cards

2020 school travel applications are now open. Students progressing to Yrs 3 and 7 no longer need to re-apply if they are:

  • are continuing at the same school
  • are residing at the same address
  • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply. Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails. Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019.

Service and Social Engagement

Bandanna Day Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is Bandanna Day and students are encouraged to purchase a new bandanna to support CanTeen and help make sure that no young person goes through their cancer journey alone. CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Through CanTeen they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer and connect with other young people in the same boat. If they’ve been diagnosed themselves, CanTeen also provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams.

Students can buy a new 2019 Bandanna for $5 and wear it, particularly tomorrow. We will be encouraging students to buy one for everyone in the family.

Service and Environment Student Leadership Team Planning

Our incoming student leaders will be meeting in the coming days to prepare a comprehensive program of Service and Social Engagement activities for the year ahead. They will be working closely with the rest of the senior student leadership team to bring awareness to the range social programs we actively support.

Young People’s Plan for the Planet

This cocurricular team of students have spent many lunch times during Terms 2 and 3 researching how NSW is performing against the UN Sustainable Development Goals and preparing an innovative plan for how we can improve as a state to significantly address these goals for the future.

We are nearing the finish line and are thrilled to have received Federal Government funding to represent NSW at the YPPP: It’s our Future Earth 3.0 Conference in Singapore in December. Redlands will be sending a team of five students to workshop their ideas and collaborate with teams from schools in Singapore, India, Mauritius and Kenya. This is going to be a wonderful collaborative learning experience and we will come back with lots of ideas to incorporate into next year’s project.

Reminders

Assistance Dogs Australia will be visiting Yr 7 students on 13 November and they will be undertaking some fundraising to support the training of puppies who provide valuable service and support members of the community with a wide range of disabilities.

It costs about $40,000 to train a puppy and Yr 7 will be doing some fundraising to support this training. We have also created an Everyday Hero fundraising page for digital donations.

Anglicare Toys and Tucker

This term we will also be kicking off our annual Anglicare collection for the Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign. Anglicare aim to share the joy of Christmas with people in need. Throughout November we will be seeking donations in Tutor Groups for a range of items on the shopping list (see below).

It’s only through people’s generosity that Anglicare is able to provide Christmas food and gifts to thousands of families who would otherwise go without. Please take some time to look at the shopping list and pick up something to contribute when you are next at the supermarket. There is no need to wrap contributions as they are made up into tailored hampers by Anglicare.

Year 11

Yr 11 Camp

Well done to all students on camp. We battled all types of weather throughout the week and Ms Wilson and I were so impressed with all their efforts. The final dinner was simply magical and the hard work put into organising it made even more special. It is never easy venturing outside your comfort zone and I know a lot of students on camp were certainly pushed to their limits, but it was so pleasing to see that they were able to come out the other side with a smile on their face.

Student Achievements

Aanicka Grant recently competed at the NSW/ACT State Show Jumping Championships. In gale force winds she qualified for the Junior Final, jumping 1.30 metres – only her second time jumping at this height. Unfortunately, she had a few unlucky rails on a very difficult course and didn’t place, but rode beautifully and finished with a huge smile.

Kodi Tupper recently competed at the Australian Dressage Championships in the international CDI-Y classes for riders aged 16-21 years riding at Prix St George level. They came 8th in the CDI-Y Championship and 7th in the CDI-Y Freestyle in a field of Australia’s top young riders. Kodi and her new horse, Duke, only started competing at this level in August so it was a great experience for them.

Service Trip

Jacqui Holth (Aymon’s mother) is heading to Nepal again and is asking for donations of old (clean) laptops and binoculars. The binoculars are for upcoming nature guides and conservationists. It’s an essential tool for them and very expensive for them to access. If you would like to donate, please bring them to the SSO or contact Jacqui directly on jacquiholth@icloud.com.

Year 9

Yearly Examinations

Parents will have received a letter and the Yr 9 examination timetable from the school last week. Please take the time to read the letter as the procedures have changed for the Year Group compared to last year. Due to the increasing level of maturity developing in Yr 9, students are now given the opportunity to leave Redlands and return home at either recess or lunch, if they do not have a further examination later that day. The only exception to this is on Thursday where it is required for them to remain at school and then attend their usual sporting commitments. Students are expected to use their time wisely to study for subsequent exams if they do leave school before the end of the day. They also have the option of signing into the school library to study, if they wish to do so. Please take the time to look at your child’s timetable and have a discussion with them as to what their plans are for the days where they finish either at recess or lunch.

The examination timetable is also available on Redlands Pulse.

Pastoral Care Program

Students have downloaded the second weekly study planner. The examination timetable has been released and they should have saved a copy to their desktop and understand the processes involved for the examination period in Week 4.

Social Awareness Program

The students continue to work towards a fundraising event in Week 6 to support the organisation Room to Read, who focus on reducing inequality of girls’ education in developing nations around the world. Students will be raising awareness about the organisation with other Year Groups in the school, as well as helping with the planning and running of the event in Week 6.

Interesting Article of the Week

PLEASE listen

This week I have attached a podcast about John Wood, the Founder of Room to Read, the organisation who Yr 9s are raising awareness and money for during Term 4. John believes that world change starts with educated children, and in this podcast he tells his story. Through its work, Room to Read has brought the lifelong gift of education to 16.6 million children in 16 countries. At age 35, John left his position as Director of Business Development for Microsoft’s Greater China region to found Room to Read. Seventeen years later, with over 30,000 schools and communities served, millions have been impacted by John’s decision to help a Headmaster in Nepal fill his school’s library. John used the business acumen gained during his career in technology to develop one of the fastest growing non-profit organisations in history.

I hope you have a great week!

Instrumental Competition

On Monday evening, the annual Redlands Instrumental Competition was held in the Edwards Auditorium, showcasing sophisticated levels of musical expression by all finalists as they explored a wide variety of styles and performance contexts. The repertoire presented in this competition clearly demonstrated that these students are developing highly advanced skills and expressive techniques on their instruments. Overall, the standard was outstanding and a credit to the finalists and their instrumental teachers. Adjudicating the competition this year was Dr Jeanell Carrigan, Associate Professor in the Collaborative Piano Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Sabrina Blasco, Jaida Gwilliam, Koko Sawa and Hadley Wintle represented Yr 8. The overall Winner of the 2019 Redlands Instrumental Competition was Koko Sawa who performed exceptionally on the Marimba.

NCSS Challenge

The NCSS Challenge is a national programming competition organised by the University of Sydney for secondary school students. The challenge runs for five weeks and students compete by solving a range of problems from relatively simple to mind-bendingly hard! Selected students from Yr 8 Technology classes participated. We congratulate Lucy Baird for her High Distinction and Aurora Golowenko and Sophie McGrath for being awarded High Distinction with a perfect score.

Computer Programming

For the past couple of years, Yr 7 students have a chance to learn how to write computer programming code in Python. Python is a high-level, general-purpose programming language, which is widely used by leading companies in the IT industry. Yr 8 students used the knowledge they gained in Yr 7 to create digital art by writing computer programming code in Python language. Please click on these links to view art works:

Students who decide to study Information and Software Technology in Yr 10 will get an opportunity to continue to grow their knowledge in Computer Programming. High performing students get a chance to be selected to attend a ten day summer school at Sydney University. The Sydney University Summer School brings together talented young people from all around Australia for an intensive course in Computer Programming. In the last couple of years, students from Redlands have been selected to attend this Summer School.

Yr 8 Pastoral Program Term 4

In Term 4, Yr 8 are exploring Positive Psychology. Positive psychology is not about putting on a happy face all the time. Life can be hard and disappointments and challenges are inevitable. However, scientific research has shown that there are identified strategies and skills that allow people to navigate the challenges of life more effectively and enjoy life despite the upsets. Elements of positive psychology and best explained through the PERMA framework. To promote PERMA, one Tutor Time a week for Term 4 will be dedicated to TimeOut Thursday. During this time, Tutors will facilitate a fun mindfulness activity eg. colouring, origami, reading etc. For those students needing some extra time to move, they are able to join Mr Warrell and me for some outdoor activities or downtime. As spots for outdoor activities are limited, students were asked to sign-up via iLearn by Wednesday.

4 November and 5 November – Yr 7 Surf Life Saving
12 November – Dose 2 of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine

This Week

The Redlands Instrumental Competition was held in the Edwards Auditorium this week, showcasing sophisticated levels of musical expression by all finalists as they explored a wide variety of styles and performance contexts.  Congratulations to 2019 Finalist Ahnu Guan and Division 1 Runner-Up Yumi Konetzny.

Yearly Exams – 28 October to 1 November

The Yr 7 examination schedule was discussed last week in the Year Meeting with students. It has been added to Redlands Pulse for parents. All students will meet in the Undercroft each morning at 8.20am for a welcome and to get organised in class groups for the day’s examinations. Please ensure students are well prepared with required materials (ie. pencils, pens, calculators, etc). Students should be checking each exam notification for specific required materials. While we do encourage students to be studying and preparing for these examinations, we also want to remind students that this is their first exam block experience and it is truly a learning experience for how examinations are run in the Secondary School as well as a chance to showcase everything they have learned this year.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Thank You to our Parent Volunteers

Last Friday, I joined a number of colleagues at the School’s annual Volunteer Thank You evening, a formal opportunity for the School to recognise and thank the many ways in which our parent community contribute to the School.

Both Principal, Dr Lennox, and Chair of the Board of Directors, Ms Glenda McLoughlin, spoke warmly and appreciatively on behalf of the School, noting the example of giving back that volunteering also models to our children as well as others.

In recognising that not all parent volunteers were able to make this evening, I wanted to acknowledge my gratitude to all of the parents who have selflessly served our community in roles this year including as members of our School Board of Directors, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association, the Foundation Steering Committee, Friends of Groups, alongside the many parents who have taken the time to share their expertise and wisdom in the context of supporting learning.

This morning was the final meeting of 2019 of our wonderful Junior School Class Parent representatives and I thank them for the role they have played in building relationships within classes and Year Groups and embodying the spirit of school community here at Redlands. On behalf of all of our Junior School families and teachers, I thank our Junior School Class Parents for 2019:

Yr 3: Cristine Ambrose, Carrie Jelley, Megan Mansell, Bree Stevens, Kirsty Svensson and Bec Wood
Yr 4: Mara Bond, Rebecca James, Sigrid Keller, Virginia Nicholls and Rhonda Sheeran
Yr 5: Annie Flynn, Anita Larsson, Caroline Nochar, Claire Richardson, Angela Snedden, Nona Subasi and Rachelle Zoccolan
Yr 6: Leena Gupta, Tania Tan, Kerryn Wilson, Paula Kalleske and Nicole Doukas

Leading and supporting these parents, we have been fortunate to have had Jay Cunningham and Christa Green in the role of Junior School Parent Group Coordinators for 2019 and I extend my gratitude to them for both their calm, people-focused leadership and for being such an important conduit between the School and our parent community, it has truly made a difference.

Yr 4 STEAM Learning Day

Next Friday 1 November, our Yr 4 cohort will enjoy a day of experiential learning in the connected areas on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) as part of a broader schoolwide program of STEAM immersion. The day has been devised by our eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow, and the students will be engaged in a variety of STEAM-related projects throughout the day.

We are keeping some of the workshops as a surprise for the students but one that I can share is a creative ‘Art’ project, where students will have the opportunity to create their very own running shoe design, just as Nike, Vans and Converse do to help artists share their work. We have partnered with a low-socioeconomic school in Western Australia who have a significant indigenous student population in need of necessities such as shoes. As such, we will be donating the shoes to the school as part of this project.

Second Hand Sports Shoes Collection

Connecting to the Yr 4 STEAM Day, we are also inviting all students to support a second hand shoe drive across the School and kindly ask that if you have any second hand shoes from students in Kindergarten to Yr 6, that you can drop these off at the Junior School Office before Friday 8 November, when we will ship them to Warlawurru School in Red Hill. Redlands supported Shoes for Planet Earth three years ago and below is a summary of how donations can be accepted:

  1. Sports shoes only please
  2. No holes and good soles
  3. Clean shoes
  4. Tied together in matching pairs
  5. Ensure laces and inner soles are intact.

Students will be informed of this in assembly next week too and any donations will be gratefully received.

Junior Campus Bush Dance

Our Bush Dance team have done a wonderful job in selling over 200 tickets so far for the upcoming Bush Dance next Saturday 2 November. More details can be found on the Upcoming Events page.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for Prep are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Preparatory School page will consist of general information from the Head of Preparatory School.

Parent Volunteer Thanks

We have so much to be grateful for at Redlands including the many parent volunteers and staff whose generous and positive contributions make such a difference to our school community. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association, together with the large number of parents who volunteer throughout the school year, were thanked by Principal, Dr Lennox and Chair of the Board, Ms McLoughlin last Thursday evening in the John Roberts Centre. This year particularly, saw some tremendous efforts towards the Gala Ball, which was a huge success for the Principal’s Scholarship Fund. The School couldn’t operate as successfully without the many families who happily contribute and support students during a variety of school activities. This week saw the last of our Preparatory Parent Group Meetings and I would like to acknowledge and thank those parents who have been so involved in sharing information, collaborating with their classes and Year Groups, and welcoming the new families who joined our community this year. A special thank you to Bree Stevens and Christine Dagg who led this group so ably throughout the year.

Bush Dance

Yr 12 Students – Cambodia Fundraiser

Next week, two Yr 12 students Josh Benneyworth and Sean Farrell, will be presenting at the Prep School Assembly. They will be sharing with the students a fundraising event that they will be holding in the Prep School next Wednesday 30 October, after Clubs between 4.00pm-4.30pm. More details can be found in Upcoming Events.

Yr 1 Camp Out

In a departure from previous years, due to the Junior Campus Oval refurbishment, Yr 1 Camp Out was held at the Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park at North Narrabeen last Friday and Saturday. A sincere thank you to Kim Flatman and Vanessa Finlayson who coordinated and organised the Camp Out, giving the students and parents such a positive and enjoyable first camping experience as a school community. I would also like to add my appreciation to Yr 1 teachers Miss Eggleton, Ms Angus and Mrs Chipper, for leading activities and their general care of the students, and the Yr 1 parents, particularly Mr Russo, Mr Barnes, Mr Pope, Mr Humphries, Mr Nassar and Mrs Grinham, who expertly managed the breakfast cooking and clean-up for all campers. So many highlights to remember, with my favourite being the sharing of cards between parent and child. This recount below from Audrey Gaudin in 1S will give you an insight into the adventures of Camp Out.

On Friday I went camping at Narrabeen Lakes Camping Ground. When I stepped out of the car I saw an extraordinary view of tents. We all sat down and listened to the teachers. The teachers told us to do our surprise for our parents. We all went into a big room to decorate our wonderful cards. On the front cover I drew my Dad and I standing in front of our tent. On the back cover I drew a heart. Under the heart I wrote I Love You. After my Dad read my card I read his. After dinner Mrs Fellowes read us a bedtime story. We all sang happy birthday to Sahana. Before dinner we watched Mr Bean. It was so so so so hilarious! In the morning I got up and went into Coco’s tent. After I got dressed I went outside and I played cat and mouse while my Dad cooked breakfast for me. After we all played a fun game of stuck in the mud we all sat down and listened to the teachers. We were going to do some yoga. How fun!

Student Placement 2020

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the thorough and careful process teachers engage in to place every child in a class that ensures academic success and a positive year ahead. Please be confident that class placements are made to ensure the best educational experience for every child in the Preparatory.

Class placements are organised by all of the teaching staff who know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  1. Academic – Current and future teachers work closely to ensure children are placed in an environment where they will be given the best opportunity to reach their full potential and develop a love of learning. Between Redlands House and Prep there is close consultation amongst staff, and the orientation process further enables collective discussions.
  2. Balance of learning styles and learning needs – To ensure all children can receive equal support and attention, a balance of learning needs and learning styles is maintained in all classes.
  3. Emotional – Each child’s emotional needs are considered when placing them in a class for the following year as this is recognised as impacting on day-to-day experiences, success and enjoyment of school.
  4. Gender balance – Redlands endeavours to keep a gender balance in each class.
  5. Social/Friendships – Teachers are aware of which students learn and play well together. At times, there can be a difference between the two in that children who play well together do not always learn the best together. This can influence a child’s class placement. Teachers are also mindful of which students need space from each other. With the reorganisation of classes each year, students have the opportunity to meet new friends and mix with other students.

Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as, invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits. I know that you will also understand that it is not possible to request a particular teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is simply not sustainable or equitable to all families. All classes for 2020 will be shared on Redlands Pulse in the days prior to the beginning of school.

Warmer Weather

With the warmer weather approaching, could I please remind all parents to ensure their child/ren have a named hat and water bottle with them at school every day. The Prep School’s preference is the Redlands water bottle which can be purchased at the Uniform Shop. However, if you choose to use a metal drink bottle it must be placed inside the school bag, as the side pocket on the school bag does not safely support the weight of this type of drink bottle. In Term 4 and Term 1, the school blazer is optional for all students.

The aim of the fundraiser is to raise money for their upcoming School Service trip to Cambodia which is an annual Service trip open to all Yr 12 students. They will be working on a Community Based Project in a remote village located near Siem Reap. Last year’s group helped to build and renovate a patient room at the community hospital, which they also shared in an Assembly with the students.

M’Lop Tapang was founded by Redlander John McGinley back in 2003 as an initiative to offer safety to vulnerable children. They now work with over 5,000 children and families to provide services, meals, shelter, medical care and education. All money raised next week will go to M’Lop Tapang to enable them to continue their valuable work with these children. Josh and Sean will be selling Fruit Kebabs for $2.50 and Apple Slinkies for $1.50, outside the Canteen. Any support you can provide these students would be greatly appreciated and all money goes to this great cause.

Nutrition Seminar for Redlands House Parents

On Friday 1 November, we are delighted to have Kate Flynn from Orbit for You give a seminar on the importance of nutrition for children. Kate is passionate about educating people about their bodies and she regularly writes and lectures for major institutions on Health and Well Being. We all know the important role nutrition plays in a child’s physical and mental development. Kate will assist us to understand how to provide the best start for our children and develop healthy eating habits. The seminar will take place in the Lucy Hill Library in the Preparatory School at 9.00am. We hope you can join us for this wonderful opportunity.

Bush Dance

The Bush Dance is a real highlight on the Junior Campus calendar and one you wouldn’t want to miss. Volunteers are still needed for set up of the event (1.00pm-3.00pm) and pack down (8.00pm-9.30pm or earlier with more hands to help) and the Slushie Bar (4.30pm – 8.00pm). If you are interested, could you please complete the details found on this link. I look forward to sharing this wonderful event with the Preparatory community.

The importance of breakfast cannot be overstated, a vital tool for all students and athletes looking to start their day off on the best foot possible. Breakfast’s importance is in its name itself, a way of breaking our fast overnight, it is the first chance for our bodies to take on nutrients that will not only help fuel our active life styles but also aid brain function, speed up metabolism and assist with cognitive focus.

Carbohydrates are essential for young developing athletes and students, providing much needed energy to get us through the day. Great options like oats and wholemeal toast can be combined with fresh fruits like bananas or blueberries to kickstart our day.

Protein is an essential nutrient for muscle growth and repair and can be found in a whole range of options to suit an active lifestyle on the go. Eggs on toast or an omelette will provide you with enough protein to get you through the first part of the day. Peanut butter is a great option either on its own on toast or combined into a smoothie or with fruit. When looking at spreads and jams, avoid any with too many additives or chemicals.

In line with this, the Canteen is now open for breakfast with a range of great options available. The Fitness Centre is open across all mornings during the week from 6.30am with students reminded that once on site, they are required to remain on school grounds.

Basketball

The 1sts Boys Basketball team competed in the ISA pre-season tournament on Saturday hosted by St Pius. They played against a mixture of schools from various divisions within the ISA Boys Basketball competition. An early win over Blue Mountains was a great start to the day, followed by an upset over one of the top ranked Division 1 teams, Central Coast. Next up was a tough loss against a very strong St Augustine’s side, but the boys bounced right back for two more wins over Oxley and St Spyridon. The final game of the day was against St Pat’s which finished with a 22-22 draw. With only one loss for the day and a 4th placed finish overall, it was a great result against some of the powerhouses in Division 1 Boys Basketball.

The 1sts and 2nds Girls both competed in the ISA pre-season shootout at Sydney University on Saturday. The 2nds played their first game against SACS, coming away with a great win against a team that they will face again in Round 1 of the season. Despite missing a few players, the 2nds were extremely competitive against some of the top Division 1 schools. The 1sts played against Barker and had a convincing win. The following two games against Oxley and Blue Mountains saw improvements in each game. Finishing top of their pool, the cross-over for the Grand Final was against last year’s champions, Central Coast. CCGS had an early lead in the game but some stellar defensive plays forced Central Coast into consecutive turnovers. The ability to convert these turnovers into points saw our girls gain momentum at the right time and hold the lead for the remainder of the game, winning the overall Pre-Season Shootout Shield for the first time since 2014 (pictured at top).

Round 1 of the Basketball season will be held this Saturday. A reminder for all players and parents to check the Redlands Rhino (available on Redlands Pulse) for their game time. We ask that all players arrive at the venue 45 minutes prior to the start time indicated on the fixture.

Equestrian

Congratulations to Yr 11 students Aanicka Grant and Kodi Tupper on their recent Equestrian achievements. In the holidays, Annicka represented NSW at the National Interschool Championships at Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park, placing 5th overall in the 1 metre showjumping. Last week, competing against the best U18 showjumpers in the state at the NSW/ACT Showjumping Championships in Canberra, Aanicka qualified for the 1.30 metre Junior Final, her second only time jumping at this height.

On 13 October, Kodi competed in the Alexander Park Dressage Championship and Regional Festival Competition, winning her Prix St George class and being awarded the Large Youth Tour Champion for the event. Last week at the Australian Dressage Championships at Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park, Kodi competed in the international CDI-Y classes for 16-21Y Prix St George riders, and placed 8th in the CDI-Y Championship and 7th in the CDI-Y Freestyle in a field of Australia’s top young dressage riders.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman (Yr 8) who played with the NSW U15 Indoor Hockey team at the State Championships. Despite the results, Eloise and her team had a lot of fun and very much enjoyed the weekend’s competition.

Netball

There will be a Friends of Netball AGM on Monday 4 November at 6:00pm in L1.2. If you would like to join the Friends of Netball Committee, please come along. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in joining the FoN, please email Mr Cameron Ellis.

Rowing

The Rowing students have settled into the new schedule for Term 4, especially with the introduction of the morning on water training once a week for our Yrs 7 and 8 students. Our Juniors completed their first 1000m ergo test for the season on the rowing machine while our Senior students complete their own ergo testing over the longer 2000m distance this week. So far it has been very encouraging how many students have already set new personal best times, it shows just how effective the Term 3 and holiday training was.

This weekend, Saturday morning will see many of our students attend their first regatta of the season with the Mosman Middle Harbour Time Trial, while both of our Girls and Boys 1sts crews will attend the NSW Institute of Sport Time Trial. Any student not racing will still have training that morning, all times and details have already been emailed to families.

Touch Football

The teams have now been placed on Redlands Pulse – Touch Football with the ISA Season draw also. Check the Redland Rhino each Tuesday evening to confirm their weekly fixtures.

We had a great day of trials matches on Saturday against St Andrew’s Cathedral School. Many playing in their first game of Touch Football showed some great skills so early in the season. Touch Football is a great sport and unique in the fact that there is a large mix of players across Year Groups in teams, fostering new friendships across the Year Groups.

This weekend sees our Senior 1sts, Senior 3rds, Junior As and Junior Bs heading to Orange for the Kinross Wolaroi School Gala Day. The bus will be departing from the Adams Centre at 6.45am. Each team will play two games in what will be a good test for all teams involved.

Our Senior 2nds, Senior 4ths, Junior Cs and Junior Ds will be at Macquarie University playing against Central Coast Grammar School. Games times and fields can be found on the Redland Rhino

Tennis

Saturday was the opening round of the NSTA Summer Tennis Competition, with students taking to the court for the first time this season. With 27 teams playing over the day it was great to see so many Redlands students enjoying themselves. A number of students played and umpired their first official tennis match. It was pleasing to see the teams assisting each other with umpiring and providing support and encouragement from the side line. Our 1sts and 2nds both had great wins over the weekend. Thank you to Emily and River for playing up. The rest of the results were a mixed bag, some hard-fought wins to some close losses. All students will have something they can ask their coach to work on at training this week. Please check the draw for the correct venue each week.

Junior Sport

Basketball

Boys

Fort Dunnet continues to hold strong after our first home games for the season. Our 5/6 E,F and G teams all posted strong wins over Barker and Cranbrook and showed some really slick teamwork across the grades. Our H team had a chance to break a nailbiting deadlock in the dying seconds after a really tight tussle but had a volley of shots rim and bounce out.

Our A – D teams took on Cranbrook at Cranbrook and, whilst the results were mixed, taking both A and C games, our Bs tallied a massive 40 points in a narrow loss. Needless to say their scoring is a highlight and there’ll be some training effort committed to defense this week!

Yrs 3 and 4 teams looked super impressive last week and our B team in particular showed Scots opponents that speed and teamwork trumps most anything else.

All matches this week are as per the original schedule on Redlands Pulse.

All players will need a numbered Basketball singlet available for purchase or hire from the Uniform Shop before matches begin. Students should also wear their Basketball singlets to practice on Wednesdays. Singlets are reversible and can be used by coaches to help determine teams for practice drills and scrimmage matches.

Times for our Yr 3 and 4 Basketball matches look confusing this week, but are correct as per the schedule and Lang Gym is our home court venue on Redlands Senior Campus.

Girls

Our girls had a great first hitout last week in particular our 6 Blue team who had a great win over Abbotsleigh. Girls Basketball is a short season and our teams really need to hit the ground running. Our Yr 5 Gold team were excellent also and unlucky to go down narrowly after leading for the majority of the match. Our Yr 3/4 basketballers scored ten points which is a great start from a whole team of novice basketballers. The learning curve is steep at this early stage of their careers and they looked to have a blast doing it.

Before school Basketball training is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 7.15am in Dunnet Hall. Players from any grade and mixed or Girls Basketball are welcome to attend.

Cricket

Our cricketers learned a lesson in accurate bowling last week. Ironing out the cobwebs, our boys bowled too wide and, despite taking plenty of wickets, couldn’t restrict the Barker scoring to less than a hundred. Chasing a big tally, our boys threw their bats around, but Barker were tight. The boys take on Newington Lindfield this Saturday at 7.30am at Koola Park.

Tennis

Tennis rankings for this week have been finalised and our players ranked 1-8 will be playing against Scots this week at Cammeray at 8.00am (7.30am for warm up). Players holding rankings 9-16 have no match this week but will play intra squad matches at Cammeray Tennis Club the following Saturday from 8.00-10.00am. All info regarding rankings and matches will be emailed to players and their parents.

Surf Education

Beginning Monday 28 October, all students in Yrs 3 – 6 (Monday Yr 5, Tuesday Yr 4, Thursday Yr 3, Friday Yr 6) will be participating in our annual Surf Education program. We will be again using the services of the Surf Life Saving School Australia and their qualified team of SLSA instructors. These instructors will teach the students for their two week program at Freshwater Beach. The program is fully endorsed by the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia and has the support of the local councils and the NSW Education Standards Authority.

The program will focus on fitness, beach games, surfboard skills, surf safety, ocean conditions, rips, tides, currents and the overall education on the dangers of swimming and surfing in the ocean. The older students will also be instructed in basic board, first aid and swimming rescues.

This week all students enjoyed a one hour theory presentation by the branch leaders of SLSA. We look forward to putting into practice next week all the things discussed and learnt during their very informative presentation. Any questions please email srobinson@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Dante Minassian continues to go from strength to strength. He auditioned for the Bolshoi Sydney Summer School and was awarded a part-scholarship. Over the holidays he went down to Melbourne for personal visits at the ABS and also participated in the Semi Finals of the YAGP. If that wasn’t enough, Dante has just received notification that “The Australian Ballet is pleased to engage Dante as a child supernumerary in Stanton Welch’s Sylvia at Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House commencing on 30 October 2019”. Congratulations Dante! We hope many of your peers and parents get a chance to see you perform.

Another talented dancer, Chloe Scamps, competed at the Time to Shine Eisteddfod on Saturday and won the 12 Years and Under Jazz section with her solo routine. Chloe has also been selected to compete in the National Finals. Well done Chloe, what a terrific result!

Redlands Instrumental Competition

On Monday evening, the annual Redlands Instrumental Competition was held in the Edwards Auditorium, showcasing sophisticated levels of musical expression by the finalists as they explored a wide variety of styles and performance contexts. The repertoire presented in this competition clearly demonstrated that these students are developing highly advanced skills and expressive techniques on their instruments. Overall, the standard was outstanding and a credit to the finalists and their instrumental teachers. Adjudicating the competition this year was Dr Jeanell Carrigan, Associate Professor in the Collaborative Piano Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, who thoroughly enjoyed being part of the competition and provided excellent feedback to the students as they continue to understand their role as musicians when performing as a soloist. Results were:

Division 1 (Yrs 7-8)

Winner

Kokoro Sawa

Runner-Up

Yumi Konetzny

Division 2 (Yrs 9-10)

Our appreciation is also extended to Dr Emma Burgess, our special guest for the evening, who presented finalists with certificates and awarded division winners and runners-up with trophies and medallions.

Friends of Music Annual General Meeting

The Friends of Music, in association with the Music Department, presented a highly creative Annual General Meeting this year, as Redlands Music Specialist Mr Nick Russoniello opened the event by performing one of his own solo compositions for Alto Saxophone. Known as one of Australia’s most dynamic young artists and recipient of many major awards, including the 2011 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year and the 2013 Fine Music Kruger Scholarship, Mr Russoniello also shared with the Music community about his journey as an artist, along with some useful tips for encouraging and supporting music practice regimes at home.

With an emphasis on further fostering parental partnerships across the various sections of the school, it was wonderful to see many parents attending from the Junior Campus. The meeting involved the presentation of various reports from the FOM Committee and the election of office bearers for 2020. In preparing for exciting new year ahead, the Department would like to congratulate the following parents who have been elected as office-bearers in leading the Friends of Music Committee.

  • President – Emma McLaren
  • Vice President – Nadia Naylor
  • Secretary – Anne Allen
  • Treasurer – Kristina Green

The Department would like to acknowledge our exceptional group of dedicated parents, who volunteer their time to assist with various events throughout the year and their ongoing support of all Redlands musicians in all performances across the Junior and Senior Campuses. In particular, we would like to recognise the excellent leadership of the 2019 President, Mrs Emma McLaren, who has guided the Friends of Music committee throughout this year. Her meticulous organisation, guidance of the committee and support of all Music events has been integral in continuing to foster excellent parental interconnections within the Redlands Music community.
