Junior Sport
Welcome back to what is certain to be another exciting year for Redlands Sport in the Junior School. A term calendar of all things sport is available on Redlands Pulse as a one stop information point for all sporting dates during the term.
Our January Sports clinics were a great success with over 50 students attending our January Basketball camp. Keep an eye out for Football, Netball and more Basketball camps coming in the next holidays.
IPSHA Sports
Our Saturday morning sports begin on 9 February and we’ll be busy finalising/selecting teams this week and will email team lists/draws and post them on the Dunnet Hall noticeboards as soon as possible.
Basketball
Before school practices have begun. Teams will be selected after Wednesday training and posted on Thursday by recess outside Dunnet Hall. The match schedule is already available on Redlands Pulse, in hard copy at the Sports office and will be emailed to all basketballers with team lists
Players requiring Basketball uniforms should head to the Uniform Shop, who now look after the uniforms.
You’ll note from the draw that we have entered four additional Redlands teams: Redlands Blue, Green, Red and Gold. Our Redlands teams will be competing against each other in a round robin competition each Saturday. Our teams will be coached by our rep coaches, play competitive matches with match referees and be able to watch our graded teams play against other schools before or after their fixtures. The idea being that we prepare our newer players for match play without exposing them to competition from some of the larger stronger schools. We have the capacity to even up games, explain rules and give our rookie players a generally better experience. In Term 4 they’ll be ready for all oppositions.
Having had only one Wednesday training available for team selection, teams are not set in stone and our first round of matches will act as a second trial to finalise teams. It is expected that there will be some movement up and down in teams over coming weeks.
Keen Junior basketballers should try to get to Dunnet Hall at 10.30am this Saturday to support our Secondary School Boys Firsts take on St Pius. The majority of this Firsts team came through the Junior School Basketball program not so long ago. It’s great for our Juniors to see just how exciting and athletic Basketball gets beyond the Junior School.
Girls’ Football
Teams will be selected after Wednesday training and posted on Thursday at recess outside Dunnet Hall. The match schedule will be available on Redlands Pulse, in hard copy at the Sports office and will be emailed to all parents as soon as we receive it. Given the short nature of the Girls’ Football season, we will play in PE uniform wearing Redlands Football socks which are available from the Uniform Shop. Students should have shin-pads for all training and matches. Football studded boots are not essential.
Cricket
The team will be selected after Wednesday training and posted on Thursday at recess outside Dunnet Hall. The match schedule will be available on Redlands Pulse, in hard copy at the Sports office and will be emailed to all parents this coming Monday. In the nature of coloured uniforms in the shortened formats of the game, we will play in PE uniform. Hats are a must, given the heat of our recent summer.
Tennis
Redlands Tennis has entered just one team into the IPSHA competition for this term. Our top eight players will be selected to play in matches. Players who haven’t been selected for Saturday play should continue to train with the rep team on a Wednesday in preparation for adding another team to Saturday competition in Term 4. Players selected for Saturday’s first round of matches will be informed during Wednesday training and will be emailed the draw and team list. The team will be posted on the Dunnet Hall noticeboard on Thursday morning. Hard copies of the term match schedule are available from the Junior School Sports office and are also available on Redlands Pulse.
Players should wear Redlands PE uniform for Tennis matches and please, have a hat!
Swimming
As part of Redlands Sports department’s ongoing commitment to aquatic safety, all students of the Junior School will be participating in a Swimming Program as part of their studies in PDHPE.
The program commenced this week and takes place once each week where students swim in their class groups. Each class will swim in one, one hour session per week. The sessions will be conducted at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre led by the Redlands PDHPE staff and Lane Cove Swimming Club coaches. They are designed to refine technique for the upcoming Swimming Carnival.
The annual Redlands Junior School Swimming Carnival is set to take place on Wednesday 20 February. Details of the day will be in next week’s Note Day.
Netball 2019
Redlands Junior School Netball teams are entered into Northern Suburbs Netball Association competitions. As such, we have a really early start to the Netball season. Trials for our Netball teams will be in Week 4 before school.
Last year’s expression of interest in Netball has generated a basic list but there are still positions for players available if your daughter is interested in playing Netball for Redlands. Please email us at juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au by Friday 15 February COB to have your daughter added to the list.
Trials for Netball will comprise an individual skills assessment for each player in the key areas of Netball and a match scenario grading. Trials will be held before school, during Weeks 4 and 5. Trial dates and information will be emailed directly to those entered to trial.
Winter Sports Selections for 2019
Despite having barely begun our summer programs, the winter season approaches quickly and we need to start organising teams, fields and coaches for the winter as soon as we can. Please keep an eye out for an email with all the information and links concerning sports for Terms 2 and 3.
Mouthguard Fittings
With winter and more contact sports approaching, Pro-Fit mouthguards will be in Dunnet Hall foyer on Friday 22 February, to take fittings for custom mouthguards. Mouthguards are essential for many sports and recommended for many others. Custom laminated mouthguards provide exceptional fit and comfort allow for on field communication and provide great protection. Custom Pro-Fit mouthguards are $160. Please email juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au for mouthguard information and to book a fitting time. Fittings take approximately five minutes.
