JUNIOR SPORT Redlands Pulse

Reminders

With one more round to go before we break for the school holidays, please take note of the following;

  • Representative Sport Draw is live, please do not print off. As advertised previously changes come through from schools midweek and so at the latest Thursday night or Friday morning is the preferred time to check your match details. Please allow plenty of time for traffic, parking etc so your child is there 30 minutes ahead of the meeting time.
  • The Term 3 Sport calendar has been updated and is available on Pulse for your viewing.
  • Representative Sport Absences – if your child is unable to attend a training session or Saturday fixture please complete our Sports Absence form located on Pulse. This will allow Sports department staff and coaches to view prior and post fixtures and allow for another student to be contacted to fill in to make up numbers. As previously mentioned, unexplained absences will effect your child’s gradings. As Representative Sport is not compulsory at Redlands, we expect all students who have committed to a team, to be present at all games and training sessions for the duration of the season.

CIS Hockey

Congratulations to Otis Gait who has returned from Newcastle after representing CIS in Hockey at the NSW PSSA Championships. It was a great experience for Otis and while CIS did not win the plate they had some competitive matches. Well done Otis on this representation.

CIS Rugby

Congratulations to Austin Durrant who has been named as a member of the 2021 CIS Rugby Team. Austin trialed with some tough competition from all the other sport associations and after day 2 was successful. We wish him the best of luck as the CIS team prepares for the NSW PSSA Carnival. Austin has written the following report sharing his experience:

Charlie Reeves and I were nominated to trial for the CIS U12 Rugby union team.  The trials were held at the Waratah’s shared training premises at the University of NSW, where NSW Rugby are building their new combined Waratahs home base and community rugby hub.  We were lucky to play our trials on the field next to where the Waratahs were training, so we were able to watch them in our breaks and they even cheered us from the sidelines at one stage while we were trialling.

On the morning of the first day of trials there were 3 teams of 15, and we did some skills tests before playing some trial games.  The coaches ran the day very efficiently and were clear in their expectations of what they wanted to see throughout the games so as to make the squad – dominant scrummaging, strong tackles, strong running and applying rugby IQ.  The day was a roller coaster of feeling great about having this opportunity to play, but also nerves.

The coaches made sure everyone had good game time opportunity, before selecting two teams out of the morning session and a similar afternoon session combined, to come back for a second day of trials. The trials were non-stop.  It was a good laugh though, as all of us there had something in common – a love of rugby, so we got to mix and catch up with players we knew from other schools and clubs, while also talking tactics and game plans.

On the second day the two teams played a series of high paced and high intensity games. At the end of that I was lucky  enough to be one of the 22 players selected for this years U12 CIS rugby union team that will tour to Mudgee in August to play in the NSW PSSA Primary Rugby Championship.

For me the highlights of the trials were the non-stop game time, getting to play rugby on a bigger stage with friends I know through rugby, and the Waratahs cheering me on as I made a break down the field, only for one of my friends to tackle me just before the tryline.

AFL Paul Kelly Cup

Last week we travelled out to Blacktown Sports Park to participate in the Regional finals of the Paul Kelly Cup with 1 girls team and 1 boys team. Having being granted a wild card entry to the event based on last years results, the teams had been training hard in the weeks leading up to the day. Coach Sam and Chloe have sent through their reports below.

Sam Lewis – Boys Coach:

L 52 – 2 vs Waverly College

A tough loss against the regional and IPSHA champions who had 6 Swans Academy Players in their lineup, this served as a great learning game for the boys. They had many positive passing movements which just lacked the finishing touches at the end to compete on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the resilient defence couldn’t contain all of the Waverly pressure as they built up the margin. George Andrews and Finn Gurney were instrumental, talking goal saving marks and creating offensive opportunities.

L 25-4 vs Blackwell Public School

A tight contest between Blackwell and Redlands saw a late flurry of goals end in an unlucky defeat. Redlands contested well around stoppages and showed great improvement kicking towards leads. Once again the forward line made many opportunities, although, they couldn’t covert in front of goal as well as some unlucky disallowed goals. Byron Mills was key in the middle winning numerous taps in the ruck.

W 37-8 vs Kings Langley

What a way to finish the day! Huge win by Redlands against kings Langley, showing incredible efficiency in front of goal with 6 goals and just the 1 behind. Merrick Schmidt was prolific in the forward line kicking 3 of the goals, and providing great scoring options. Raphael Rolon also had a stellar game assisting many goals from clearances out of the midfield. Great win Boys!

Chloe Davis Girls Coach:

Game 1 vs Engadine West PS

The Redlands girls started strongly, holding the ball in our forward zone for the first few minutes of the game. Zoe Potter was excellent in the ruck, delivering great taps to her midfielders who successfully transitioned the ball into the forward zone. The Engadine West team was strong on the ball, with a team of tall experienced players, and were able to transition quickly to score quick goals before half-time. Maya Turton moved into the back-line in the second half to provide some extra defensive experience and the Redlands Girls improved their defensive efforts by locating an opponent and spoiling marks. As a first game for a very new team, the girls worked well together and enjoyed their first game of the day.

Game 2 vs Holy Family, Kelso

Redlands came up against their most physical opponent in the second game against Holy Family, Kelso. Lila Soste was purposeful with her tackling and spoiling efforts with Cate Andrews and Zara Luce rotating well through the midfield to clear the ball into the forward zone. Amelie Dewar was also able to find some space on the wing in her first game of the day. Redlands struggled to maintain structure and space in this game, with lots of repeat stoppages and crowding of the ball. This was a great learning opportunity for the Redlands girls, who were playing just their second game together.

Game 3 vs Camden South PS

This was the strongest and closest game for the Redlands Girls team, going down to Camden South by 8 points. Lucy Goodsall was a strong in full-forward, with great positioning in front of goals. Katie Jennings moved from the midfield to the backline and was solid in defence, with great locating of her opponent and excellent tackling. Mati Carlyon put her body on the line in numerous tackling efforts and she played the game with determination and purpose. Overall, the Redlands Girls enjoyed their experience of AFL at Paul Kelly Cup and showed great team and school spirit. This was a great introduction for the girls leading into Term 3 IPSHA AFL.
