Issue 17 2021 - 03 Jun 2021

From the Principal

It was definitely worth the wait!

The Senior Music Festival held last Friday night, at The Concourse, was an incredible showcase of the musical talent in the School and the depth of the quality of our staff in the program. There were so many moments when you had to pinch yourself to realise that it was actually a school concert. There was certainly an extra energy and buzz due to the excitement of the students once again being able to perform in front of a large live audience, as well as the opportunity to farewell Coordinator of Music Darren Kuilenburg in style. The ABBA medley finale was great fun, with Year 12 students enjoying the chance to dance and sing to the classic tunes. Including a fitting tribute to Tomomi Takahashi, who gave so much to music at Redlands, the night was full of joy and gratitude for the gift of music in our lives.

In a most impressive performance last Saturday, our Yr 11 students won the Senior Division of the Ethics Olympiad. Based on their points total, the team will now progress through to the international final in June. Summary details below:

  • Team members: Katina Casimaty, Amelie Heard, Sophia Maxwell, Jack Murray, Omar Rihani, Josie Robertson, Callum Wardman-Browne
  • Event format: eight case studies; series of four events, cumulative point score system – focus on moral and ethical thinking
  • Topics included: Korean Pop, ethics and truth of public safety during COVID, dating after prison, gaming platforms and shocking speech, defending the police, creative freedom and stereotyping
  • Judges: University staff, local and international

My congratulations to all team members and thanks to Mr Del Villar for coaching the team.

Earlier this term, I informed parents and the wider Redlands community about our goal to establish a means-tested scholarship to honour the legacy of long-standing and respected educator Belinda Oxley. Belinda joined our staff in 1995 as a Yr 2 Teacher and fulfilled many important roles at the School over 23 years, including Dean of Early Childhood, up until her passing in 2018.

This means-tested Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding all-round student, commencing in Yr 7 in 2023, who otherwise would not have an opportunity to experience a Redlands education.

Thank you to those members of our community who have already contributed and I encourage those who wish to support this wonderful cause or learn more, visit the Foundation section of Note Day. The Redlands Arts Luncheon, held last week, provided a wonderful launch to this means-tested scholarship, which will have such a positive impact well into the future.

Community Update

Our motto, ‘Let your light shine’, is a phrase taken from The Sermon on the Mount, ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:16 NIV). At Redlands we aim to provide extensive opportunities to enable each student’s light to shine and to foster the light in those around them, and those who need support.

We are fortunate to have an altruistic community.  Parents and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time.

Redlands, like most independent schools, has a Foundation that supports the School’s strategic and philanthropic programs. The Foundation Advisory Committee (FAC) provides the School with specialist counsel in support of the short and long-term objectives of these important programs. The FAC’s experienced stewardship of our philanthropic program enables Redlands to continue to invest in the growth and advancement of the School.

Like the FAC, our Parent Contact Groups, Friends of Groups, Alumni Association and the RPFA all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community.

‘Let your light shine’ is an ethos we carry in all our endeavours and I remain grateful for the guidance and support that our volunteer community so generously continue to provide. We are an altruistic community.

Please don’t hesitate to connect with the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Honouring Belinda Oxley

This year, our Scholarship Appeal honours the legacy of long-standing and respected educator Belinda Oxley.  Belinda joined our staff in 1995 as a Yr 2 teacher and fulfilled many important roles at the School over 23 years, including Dean of Early Childhood, up until her passing in 2018.

With her excellent knowledge of visual literacy and the visual arts, Belinda was admired by colleagues for her passion, enthusiasm and collegiality. She was well known for guiding many aspiring teachers in the practical component of their studies.

Our ambitious appeal target of $400,000 will ensure this scholarship can be awarded in perpetuity, supporting each recipient for the duration of their educational journey at Redlands, starting from Yr 7We are grateful for the support we have received so far from our Community which enabled us to achieve 40% of this target.

Your contribution inspires lives

In the recent weeks the second Peter Lennox means-tested Scholarship was awarded to a well deserving all rounded student who will commence Yr 7 in 2022. Official announcement will be made in Term 3.

Conversations

Conversations are a typical human experience, and sometimes, a powerful one. We learn through conversation, through talking with others, through exchanging ideas, through building meanings – with others.

This week I have had some really rich conversations with students. Many of these have been with Yr 7 students around ideas they wish to pursue in their story writing. In our English class we’ve been exploring boundaries and fragility and the relationship between life and death. Weighty subjects for 12 year-olds, but unsurprisingly, they are facets of life Yr 7 are beginning to feel confident to tackle in their writing. The conversations about their ideas around these topics are so important. Being able to clarify, explore and question, is a necessary part of the process of planning and discernment which comes before writing. I usually initiate the conversation with a question: ‘As the writer, what do you want to say to your reader – what’s your message to them about this big idea?’ It’s a wonderful experience to be able to sit with a student and support them to sculpt and shape their ideas, to craft their story, through the power of a conversation.

During the week, I’ve also observed some powerful conversations. A group of eight Yr 8 students (Rebecca Frantz, Kiana Gapaillard, Zoe Halliday, Hannah Scott, Sela Tea, Georgina Williams, Amalie Winton and Ruby Wood) pictured ‘conversing’ before their presentation have been collaborating together on presentations for our celebration of Heritage week. They have met at lunchtimes over a number of weeks with Redlands archivist Marguerite Gillezeau and Yr 8 Year Advisor Ms Lisa Vale, to explore and discuss the history of our School, in preparation for presentations to the Junior School on Tuesday and Yr 7 and 8 on Thursday this week. Their presentations were delightful and the result of powerful conversations with Marguerite and each other. When they presented at the Junior School assembly on Tuesday, they spoke directly to their audience, using questions and visuals to communicate their message and share the history of Redlands. These conversations about the past help us to understand our present and shape our future. Our Yr 8 Heritage Week ambassadors sustained the conversation about the School’s rich heritage through their passion and energy – they clarified, explored, considered and shared.

Another group of powerful conversations I have observed this week is between Yr 10 students and their designated mentor in the Subject Selection process. Up and down the Secondary School Office corridor, Yr 10 have been engaged in conversations about their interests, challenges and plans for the future. We are using a detailed spreadsheet to track these conversations and by the end of day one (the conversations run for two-weeks), a new column had appeared for recording students who would benefit from a second conversation, prior to the selection process. For us, as teacher leaders, these conversations with Yr 10 students are so important and so enriching. Taking the time to sit down with a young person and unpack their motivations and interests prior to committing to a course of study, certainly supports decision making and engenders self-confidence. We anticipate the students will feel supported by these conversations and that their trust of us, as professionals who really ‘know’ them, will continue to deepen over time.

Conversations about managing stress and promoting wellbeing continued this week, in our Yr 12 Student-Led Assembly for Yr 7-9. Anna-Luisa Feller and Sofia Stuckman were key in facilitating the organisation of the assembly and igniting the conversation around positive self-management, a core part of the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework. Articulate and confident in their conversation with Yr 7-9, Yr 12 Prefects Olivia Reid and Chloe Stewart unpacked the idea of stress for younger students. Again, they spoke directly to the students and were so successful in their capacity to reach the students through relevant examples and practical suggestions. Dillon Hayford and Daniel Thomas (Yr 12) amused the assembly with a challenging quiz, demonstrating practically how to unwind, have a laugh and work together. Punctuating the assembly was Yr 12 student Rex Markman who wowed the group with a soulful musical item. His gentle confidence and relaxed presence while performing, was an apt way of highlighting to Yr 7, 8 and 9 how to self-manage and how to ‘be’ yourself. Whilst technically, engaging in a quiz and listening to a performance does not constitute a ‘conversation’, it was abundantly clear that Yr 12 were indeed engaging others through this exchange of knowledge and experience. It was a lovely assembly and a credit to the Yr 12 students who formed part of the organisation and delivery.

Finally, it is with mixed emotions that I announce that Ms Simone Salier, Redlands University and Careers Advisor, will be leaving us at the end of this term, to pursue a new career opportunity at Repton School in Dubai. Simone has been at Redlands for seven years and in this time, has made many significant contributions to the community. Simone knows well the value of a powerful conversation! She has engaged in many conversations with students (and parents) over the years, supporting young people to consider their options, to reflect on their strengths and to challenge themselves for success. Simone will be greatly missed but as a community who well knows the value of travel and overseas experience, we wish her well, and look forward to connecting with her once again in the future. Please be assured that we have begun the process of recruiting for a new University and Careers Advisor for Term 3.

Heritage Week

Heritage Week is a time to reflect on the culture of our School and to celebrate the good things and resilience of our community. Our history, current culture and vision are all on view as we celebrate together. As we do this we need to look back, reflect on the present and look forward.

Looking back, we see some key formative times in our history. The resilience and vision as the founders established a school for girls to develop young women to think and serve. In the middle of last century, when the School became part of the SCEGGS network of schools, the choices of the school motto and readings showed a depth of theological reflection wanting to see the young women be prepared for a life of serving, being light for the benefit of others and the glory of God. This remains relevant today for all our students. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) is the first part of the school reading and are familiar words: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the kingdom of God. Blessed are those who are pure in heart, they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God.”  These words challenge us to seek God, his ways and his priorities. This message is a timeless message, bringing hope and clarity in the face of changing society.

Reflecting on our present leads us to give thanks for good leadership, dedicated teachers, wonderful students and a diverse community working together. I have the delightful experience of speaking to the entire school body each week as they attend chapel. I see their individuality, their networks of friendships and their faces as they consider the messages. It is a constant joy to engage with students at various ways in deep conversations about life. Our sacred duty as a school is to prepare our students for the challenges of life before them. As the Chaplain I aim for each student to have a clear understanding of the message of the bible: that God creates and loves them God saves us, through Jesus’ death into this eternal kingdom. This is good news bringing hope, love, resilience, peace and joy.

In looking forward, we can consider the way our School can serve both our students and the world. This outward focus of the light metaphor reminds us that our School can be an agent of change and an agent for justice and compassion. As we ignite our students’ vision and thinking they will become global citizens engaging with the complex issues of the day, we will want them to have a good ethical, moral and spiritual foundation to think logically and creatively, to understand these issues and see the nuances and perspectives. Only then can they begin to seek solutions and instigate change or reform.

It is therefore appropriate that on Friday we will have a Foundation Day Service coming before God as a community to celebrate and reflect on our School. It is of course essential that we have a firm and sure foundation for our School and life. Our Anglican tradition declares that with Jesus as the cornerstone, our foundation is secure enabling us to reach for the stars.

Year 11

As we enter the final three weeks of Term 2, Yr 11 have been learning about social media and technology addiction and debating whether or not they think there is an issue in society. They have also begun developing their understanding and practising their use of gender inclusive language, why it is important and how we can ensure we use this type of language in our daily lives. This week has been a busy week in particular for the HSC students, with a number of assessments adding to the stress of their busy lives. Extra-curricular activities that have taken place over the past week have included the ISA Cross Country and the Redlands Senior Music Festival: two students have written reports below about these amazing events.

Ethics Olympiad

On Saturday our Yr 11 students won the Senior Division of the Ethics Olympiad, which is a fantastic achievement! The team will now progress through to the international final in June. The team consists of the following students: Amelie Heard, Jack Murray, Callum Wardman-Browne, Sophia Maxwell, Katina Casimaty, Omar Rihani and Josie Robertson. Participating in this competition helps students develop creative communication skills, critical thinking and respectful discourse, while dealing with important ethical issues, such as dating after prison, defending the police, creative freedom and stereotyping.

ISA Cross Country Student Achievements

Congratulations to the following students for their participation in the ISA Cross Country Carnival: Max Rawlinson, Oscar Theisen, Charles Blake, Ben Adamson, Ashani Gupta, Audra Olson and Amelie Heard. A special mention goes to Olivia Vigneault who finished in 1st place in the 17 years girls 4km race (see her report below). Overall, our boys came 2nd out of 16 schools and our girls came 3rd out of 11 schools.

Student Reports

Cross Country Report, by Olivia Vigneault

Last Wednesday, a number of Redlands’ students proved their resilience by competing in the 2021 ISA Cross Country Carnival. In the lead up to this event, we attended trainings every Friday afternoon at Primrose Park to develop our endurance. The trainings were demanding, yet we supported each other through them. What I found most uplifting about this year’s carnival is Redlands’ sense of comradery and team encouragement. Upon Mr Walker’s advice, every student had strong finishes and often managed to beat other competitors at the last second. This could not have been done without all the Redlands students cheering them on and showing their support as they sprint to the finish. It was great to see a typically individual sport become more of a team effort. Especially during 6am Friday morning trainings, when at least you know you’re not in it alone. It was inspiring to see in particular all the Yr 7 and 8 students willing to venture outside their comfort zones and try something new. Personally, running has always been a huge aspect of my life and a great stress reliever, as well as allowing me to meet new people. I am excited for the future of Redlands’ runners.

Senior Music Festival Report, by Omar Rihani

Last Friday, I participated in my first ever Redlands Senior Music Festival, and I must say it was an experience unlike any other I’ve had before. There was just something so invigorating about the atmosphere which I haven’t come across before anywhere else: the energy in every room you entered was contagious. It was really fun to be able to watch everyone’s performances. We have some incredible musicians here at Redlands. Seeing my close friends performing their solos is always a treat, and watching amazing musicians perform is a great inventive to improve. The ensembles were amazing as well: their cleanliness is testament to how diligent and committed everyone is to give their best performance. A personal highlight of mine was the Concert Band’s Back to the Future piece which was superbly arranged and tightly performed. On Friday I was able to perform as a backing vocalist for the Yr 12 ABBA medley performance, along with Callum Wardman-Browne, Sophia Maxwell, Eden Borrie, and Mia Kloiser-Jones from Yr 11. It was fun to make up a bit of backing vocal choreography and just enjoy being on stage, singing behind such competent Yr 12 soloists. As the night drew to a close, the energy turned to a melancholier vibe as it dawned on everyone Mr Kuilenberg was on his final voyage as the Head of Music at Redlands. I haven’t known him for very long, but Mr Kuilenberg always had my and the department’s best interests in the forefront of every endeavour. On behalf of everyone at Redlands, I would like to wish him the best in whatever the future holds.

Table Tennis and Squash Sports Report, by Jacob Gold

Throughout the 6 weeks since it started, the Table Tennis and Squash season has been really enjoyable and extremely positive. Throughout the week, there is a real sense of community with the students involved as we participate in some friendly rivalry as we pass each other in the hallways and banter in class in the lead-up to each Thursday training. I have really enjoyed our weekly tournaments where all the students involved get a chance to play with people they usually wouldn’t, really strengthening the bond found in our community and allowing for some intense rallies and heated moments. Although we do not have the chance to represent Redlands and play other schools, this type of environment allows us to have more fun playing the two sports whilst still remaining reasonably competitive with each other and encouraging a healthy and balanced aura. Playing Table Tennis and Squash has allowed for me and others to take a proper break from studying and really immerse ourselves into a competitive, but low stakes, sport in which we can all have fun. Overall, the season so far has been really enjoyable and I can’t wait to see how our community and we as players continue to grow over the next term.

I hope you all have a lovely week.

Year 10

ISA XC 2021

Last Wednesday 26 May, Yr 10 had strong representation at the ISA XC Carnival at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. It was so pleasing to see the comradery amongst all of our Yr 10 students. As much as running is an individual sport, there was so much encouragement by all members of each team before, during and after their race.

Highlights on the day include Lily Swift who finished in 8th place in the 15 yrs 4k and Maddie Barwise who finished in 9th place in the 16 yrs 4k. In the 16 yrs boys, Keian Murphy finished in 5th place and Sebastien Griffith finished in 7th place. All four students have qualified for the CIS XC which is an exceptional result. A special mention to Sam Chubb, Will Pearson and Josh Hicks who all competed up an age group in the 17 yrs boys 6k. Best of luck to all of our Yr 10 students who will be competing at the CIS XC carnival on Thursday 10 June.

The highlight of the day was our Intermediate boys taking out 1st place overall out of 16 schools. The last time we won this trophy was 6 yrs ago in 2015! Our girls finished in 2nd place overall which too was an exceptional team result!

Senior Studies Interviews

Over the next 2 weeks, Yr 10 will be meeting with a senior member of staff for a one on one meeting to discuss their senior years of study. All students have been given specific times and dates and will need to attend the meeting with their completed Senior Studies Reflection Sheet. A list of all the dates and times can be accessed by students on the Yr 10 Pastoral iLearn page. I hope that students find the meeting valuable and will leave the meeting with clear direction as to what their senior studies will look like whether that be HSC or IB.

ISA XC Carnival

Congratulations to all students who were invited to the ISA Cross Country Carnival on the 26 May. The students below have qualified for the CIS XC carnival which is coming up on Thursday 10 June at Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek. Overall, boys placed 2nd out of 16 schools and finished with 1st place in the Intermediate boys (15/16s). Overall, girls placed 3rd out of 11 schools. Well done to all students!

Congratulations and best of luck to Isaac Brooks, Lara Farrell, Eva Osborn, Charlie Parker, Gianmarco Pradel.

Science Photos – Simone Bryant

Photos submitted this week from Simon Bryant in Science.  Students were modelling nuclear reactions.  The classes then marked pros and cons of each model and discussed ways to improve their models.

yLEAD Altitude Day Leadership Conference

This Friday, the students below applied for and accepted an invitation to attend a chance to further their leadership skills by participating in the leadership conference by yLEAD.  This event includes many guest speakers and various chances for students to meet from several schools across Sydney to help broaden their capacity as a leader.

Will Howard, Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Jack Petering, Sophia Rolon, Olivia Salmond, Ashley Stapleton, Emma Sullivan, Jocelyn Wang, Charli Waterland and Annie Zhang.

Several of these opportunities will arise over the next few years.  Students who showed interest yet were not able to attend this week will be given further opportunities in the future.  It is incredible to see the interest in growing leadership and the strong skills our students already have and demonstrate on a daily basis.

Congratulations to Daniel Koppers and Max Perry who have qualified for the CIS XC Carnival which is coming up on Thursday 10 June at Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek. We wish both boys the very best.

‘I was proud to represent the school along with the rest of the team at the ISA Cross-Country Carnival last Wednesday. Running cross-country is a very fun and athletic sport.’ As Mr Walker says, ‘Cross-country is as much a team sport as an individual race. The support from our peers at training and on the day helped us run our best and paid off in Redlands’ impressive results. The Intermediate (14 and 15 yrs) Boys came first, and Redlands came third overall. The course was hilly and the competition was tight, which brought the best out of our whole team. I really enjoyed the Friday afternoon training sessions and the sense of friendship and camaraderie around the team.’

Heritage Week

This week, Redlands has celebrated Heritage Week with the focus on the Arts. Eight Yr 8 students represented their cohort and presented at the Junior School Assembly – Rebecca Frantz, Kiana Gapaillard, Zoe Halliday, Hannah Scott, Sela Tea, Daisy Williams, Millie Winton, Ruby Wood. Their presentation was outstanding – factual, humorous and entertaining.

‘I had the privilege of visiting the Junior school, along with my classmates, to talk about Heritage Week. This was something special for me, as I can vividly remember Ms Gillezeau coming to the school each year to talk to us about the history of Redlands. This was one of my highlights each year throughout Junior school. Seeing the students (whose position I was in not too many years ago) actively engaging and being curious about the history of their school was amazing. This year we focused on the Creative Arts aspect of the school, and when we asked the students who was involved in the arts, I was speechless! So many of the students were involved and had a passion for the topics that we were talking about. It was a great experience and I enjoyed passing on the remarkable history of our school’.

Senior Music Festival

On Friday 28 May, the annual Senior Music Festival was held. It was wonderful we all got to perform this year, singing, with a full crowd at The Concourse once again. It was a spectacular night at the movies, ranging from well-known themes such as Ghostbusters, performed by the Intermediate Jazz Band, to more obscure pieces like Vuelie, sung by the Intermediate Choir. Not only were the ensemble performances outstanding, the Yr 11 and 12 solo performances were truly breathtaking. Alex Kim’s Variations of one String on the cello, and Callum Wardman-Brown’s original composition Monday (she tells me) on piano and vocals were both outstanding performances that represented the talent amongst the Redlands community. When I performed for the Intermediate Guitar Ensemble, it was a truly surreal experience. Before you get on stage and the butterflies are filling your whole mind, you hear the applause for the piece before you, and you know you’re almost on. Walking on and seeing the rows and rows of people all looking at you is rather intimidating, but when you actually begin to perform, it all becomes calmer. During my piece people began clapping and laughing at our head bops, it felt so amazing to be a part of such a cheerful community. I already can’t wait to perform again next year.

JUNIOR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

National Reconciliation Week

In National Reconciliation Week 27 May – 3 June, we were pleased to welcome Senior Aboriginal Heritage Officer, Karen Smith, to our Junior School assembly where she eloquently talked to students and staff about the significance of this week and in particular, the connection to this year’s them, More than a Word. Karen shared how each of us could contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia with our actions and by raising awareness and building knowledge.

My thanks are extended to Yr 5 teacher, Ms Smith, for organising this special visit and building our connection with the Aboriginal Heritage Office.

Happy 137th Birthday, Redlands!

The School has enjoyed acknowledging and celebrating its 137th birthday this week and in assembly this week, we were delighted to welcome a number of Yr 8 students to share the journey of the Arts at Redlands since the School was founded. The Arts has been a particular focus this year and I know that most of Junior School students enjoy this creative aspect of our curricular and cocurricular opportunities.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2021

For over 30 yrs, International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), have taken place in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. ICAS is an initiative of Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), a not for profit organisation owned by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

At Redlands, it is optional for Junior School students to sit these tests in Term 3. Assessments occur during class time within a supervised area of the Junior School. No particular preparation is required and all students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the State.

A more detailed letter and registration details can be found here on Redlands Pulse and any questions should be directed to the Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins.

Semester 2 Junior School Debating

Debating is a cocurricular activity available to students in Yrs 4, 5 and 6. This year, we are opening up debating again to all students to join or continue with for Terms 3 and 4.

The Debating workshops are run by coaches from Masters Academy who have worked with Redlands for a number of years to facilitate debating from Yr 4 to Yr 12. Masters Academy has a network of over 70 trained coaches, including some of the best speakers in Australia and they specialise in building communication skills and confidence for students of all ages.

There are many benefits of debating, which translate into many aspects of students’ personal and academic life, including:

  • learning how to structure persuasive arguments with evidence
  • improved understanding of the world by developing general knowledge
  • speaking concisely with minimal preparation
  • developing critical thinking skills
  • improving verbal and written confidence

Program Details

  • When: Tuesday afternoons from 3:30pm – 4:30pm
  • Location: Junior School Classrooms
  • Cost: $22 per session, which will be billed in Term 4 Fee Statements
  • Groups: Each group will have between 14-18 students

 Included in the Program

Redlands Cyber Safety Resources Hub

Thank you for the continued positive feedback on our recently-launched Cyber Safety Hub s for our community; a central point of the latest, research-based information and support in the area of technology for our families and staff.

From time to time, I will highlight a particular page or resource and this week share the hub’s advice to parents on gaming which includes looking at the risks, appropriate screen time, warning signs of excessive gaming and what parents might do to support your child in this space.

Harmony Day Poster Competition

Congratulations to Yr 5 student, Aimee Kang, who was awarded a Highly Commended Award at this year’s Harmony Day Poster Competition.

The competition received more than 5000 entries in the poster competition from 400 schools which makes this achievement even more noteworthy. Well done, Aimee.

Staffing News

We are delighted to share the news that Yr 3 teacher, Kate McAliece, gave birth last week to baby George Alfred Hollings, a second child for her and her husband, Tom. Kate and George are doing well and look forward to coming in for a visit next term.

Biggest Morning Tea – $3,118

Further to my mention last week, it was wonderful to share with the students our incredible final total of $3,118 which Yr 4 raised via a bake sale as part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council. Well done again to all of the students who took the lead in this community initiative.

Senior Music Festival

From me, one of the joys of being part of a P-12 school are the opportunities to enjoy activities across all stages of the School and last Friday, I joined many others in our community at this year’s Senior Music Festival, held at The Concourse in Chatswood.

Asides from the unadulterated joy of being at a large-scale live music event, it was inspiring to see so many former Junior School students performing including many Yr 7s who have transitioned this year and the quality and range of performances were exceptional.

Our annual Junior Music Festival was an event that I particularly missed last year as it is always one of my highlights in the School calendar. It is an event in which every Junior School student is involved in and provides our students with both the enriching opportunity and experience of performing on stage for family and friends.

At a time when international travel is but a dream, through the power of music, this year’s Junior Music Festival, Around the World in 80 Musical Minuteswill take us on a journey around the globe with items originating from many different countries. Watch out for details in due course!

Play Equipment Out of Bounds

Please be reminded that all campus play equipment is strictly out of bounds to students and younger siblings before and after school, including Saturdays when Sport and Dance takes place. This is even with parents nearby and there is clear signage to outline this. Despite this, we had an unfortunate injury this week after school when a student was using the climbing equipment unsupervised. The only time students can use this is with teacher supervision.

Lost Property

We have spoken to students this week about their responsibility to look after their own belongings here at school. Our current collection of lunch boxes, water bottles, fleeces, hats and sports jackets are at an unprecedented level and I would ask parents to support us as we help the students take the primary responsibility in managing their own belongings.

In addition, please can families take the time to ensure that belongings are all named which assists us being able to return items if lost. This is a task that I would recommend students take ownership of at home.

COVID 19 Guidelines

NSW Health continues to urge people who have been in Victoria since 12 May to check the Victoria Department of Health and Human Services website regularly to see if they have visited any of these venues of concern, and if so, immediately follow the relevant public health advice. If you attended any of the venues identified at the times listed, please contact NSW Health immediately on 1800 943 553.

With the recent developments in Victoria, it is important that schools in NSW continue to follow the COVID-19 guidelines set out by NSW Health. In particular we wish to highlight the following:

  • Students should not attend school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms should be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.
  • Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms is strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received.
  • Personal hygiene, physical distancing, cleaning will be maintained to the highest level.
  • Where possible to use outdoor areas (weather permitting) or large open spaces to gather.
  • All visitors to a school site must be well and symptom free, comply with our sign-in arrangements at Reception and maintain a physical distance of 1.5m
  • Avoid congestion of groups of visitors in specific areas where possible.
  • All visitors to school must comply with our sign-in arrangements for each visit, and check in using the Service NSW QR Code. This should include an acknowledgement that they comply with the requirements for visitors, contractors and service providers. Parents and carers who are dropping off or picking up students do not need to sign in or use the Service NSW QR code.
  • On arrival at school, students to use hand sanitiser and after exiting or entering each room.

June-July Vacation Care 2021

If you would like your child to attend the June-July Vacation Care program, please visit the OOSH page on Pulse in order to preview all information pertaining to the holiday activity schedule and daily requirements. The Flexischools website will be open on Friday 28 May at 12:00pm to make any bookings. Please use the Prep and Junior Vacation Care icon for children in K-6. Feel free to contact the OOSH coordinator, Courtney Evans with any Vacation Care or After School Care queries.

Prep School esafety Webinar

This week Yasmin London from ysafe, a specialist in the field of cyber safety and social media education presented at the Prep Parent Cyber Safety Webinar. Yasmin walked our parents through what we all need to know when it comes to supporting students digital safety and well being. She shared practical advice and helpful tips to assist parents in navigating their children’s first digital experiences. Yasmin then went on to share the navigational process of the Redlands cybersafety hub which can be accessed at  www.redlands.cybersafetyhub.com.au. It certainly is a very fluid space and to have a specialist walk us through the latest information relating to apps and games for our young learners was so helpful.

Welcome Back Parent Helpers

I am so excited to welcome parent helpers back into our classrooms starting from Term 3, Week 2. It has been a long time coming but our staff and students are desperately wanting to reconnect with our families. The staff are currently working out exactly how many volunteers they will need and what they will be used for. Volunteering and spending time in the classrooms is such a unique way to connect with your child’s learning and to help the teachers in providing an extra set of hands and ears! I know from my own experience, not all parents can volunteer during the day due to work commitments but please be assured that I am always looking for other ways where we can connect.

Term 3 volunteering can take the form of listening to children read, supervise a small group game in reading groups, assist in changing of books and many other ways. Please note that volunteering does not mean you will be listening to or only working with your child, it may be in other classes as well. If you would like to volunteer in your Year Group, please email your Grade Coordinator who will collect all names and coordinate the volunteers with their team. When emailing please outline which day would suit you (Mon-Fri). The hours of volunteering will be between 8.30am-10.30am each day (Reading groups and Maths time across the Prep School).

On Wednesday 16 June at 8.30am, we will be conducting a Parent Helper Information Session where we will outline our expectations and guidelines to our parent volunteer process and also demonstrate some of the activities that will be asked of you. This session will provide a time for us to answer any questions that you will have as well. An email invitation will also be sent shortly.

Football

Round 5 was a highly competitive round for both the Boys & Girls Football programs. The 1st Girls were up against an undefeated Barker College side and with a number of injuries it was going to be a tough game. Despite a couple of early goals to Barker the 1st Girls managed to come together for the second half and played some great team football, finishing the game with a 3-0 loss and showing some huge improvements in the second half. The Inter A girls travelled to play Oxley College, they continue to dominate the competition with a huge 9-0 win with four goal scorers throughout the game. The Junior A and Junior B Girls both had touch match ups with the Junior A girls playing in a very closely fought game, finishing 1-1 against Barker Junior A in what turned out to be a great contest for both sides. The Junior B girls had a 3-1 loss to the Barker Junior B team but showed some great signs and solid passages of play throughout the game.

The 1st Boys put up a great fight against a very strong Oakhill team with captain Liam making a play from half way and scoring an impressive 1v1 against the Oakhill keeper. The 2nds played well but had a tough game against a very strong team, losing 4-1 against Oakhill 2nds. The 16A were slow to start giving Oakhill a 1-0 lead, however, their toughness and resilience allowed them to fight back with four unanswered goals, finishing with a 4-1 win. Notable mentions to Ethan McFarlane who led by example with a 70-minute performance in the heart of midfield including a great penalty, and Jack Lazzarotto with a dominant display at center back. The 15A boys played a very strong game on Saturday and with some very well worked passages of play went into the half with a 4-0 lead, finishing the game with a huge 6-1 win. Notable mentions to Liam McFarlane and Morgan Rose for their ability to link up and unlock the defence to create some amazing chances with Noah Berbic doing the majority of the finishing. It was a tough game for the Redlands 14A side against a very strong Oakhill team. Despite not getting the win, the team came together in the second half the team was able to put together a much better performance, with some help from the 13s boys who played back to back games to help out the 14A’s. The 13A Boys were missing a few players due to illness, however, still played a great team game and held their own against a strong Oakhill side, finishing with a 4-2 loss. The 13Bs also finished with a 4-2 loss but put up a great fight against Oakhill, it is great to see improvements every week.

This Saturday 5 June will be the last round of Redlands Football before the holidays, the competition will recommence in Term 3.

Congratulations to the following students who competed in the NSWCIS Football Championships this week: Lachlan Binnekamp, Jasmine Black, Hugo McKay, Keian Murphy. The ISA Open Girls team finished 2nd overall in the tournament while the ISA 16s boys team finished in 5th. Congratulations to Jasmine Black who was selected into the NSWCIS team to compete later this term, and Hugo McKay who was selected as a shadow for the NSWCIS 16s Boys team.

Hockey

The Redlands Hockey teams continued their strong form in Round 5. The 1st Girls played against Chevalier College, and finished with a 2-2 draw. The 2nd Girls continued to dominate with a 11-0 win over Oakhill College. The Junior girls team had a bye, however, have been so strong they will move up a division for the remainder of the season.

The details for this Saturday 5 June are available on Redlands Pulse under the Redlands Rhino. This Saturday will be the last round of ISA Hockey before we break for the holidays. Best of luck to all teams in their last game of the Term on Saturday.

Netball

We had a number of great matches at NBISC over the weekend with our Snr 2 who have recently moved up a division taking on St Spyridon 1 in Division 2, the girls found their groove early on and didn’t look back, taking the match 44 – 22. It is great to see so many girls who have played netball together for a number of years really gel on the court, especially the flow between them. The Snr 4 games was great to watch, as these girls battled throughout the match with St Spyridon jumping out to an early lead, and they looked home at the start of the final quarter being up by 6. However the Redlands girls found another level and took control, taking the lead with one minute to go and didn’t look back, in the end finishing the match up 25 – 23.

Last Friday Redlands sent a number of Girls to Barker College for the ISA U15 & Open Netball trials. Congratulations to Grace Durrant (Yr 9) who was selected into the ISA U15 Netball team. Rachel Kinghorn (Yr 12) and Julia Saunders (Yr 11) were also selected in the ISA Opens Netball squad. We wish these girls the best of luck as they compete next term at the NSWCIS Netball Championships.

Please ensure you check the Redlands Rhino each Tuesday afternoon for the up-to-date fixtures, there have been some changes to the draw and schedule

Swimming

Congratulations to Loch Wilding (Yr 10) who last Friday, competed at the NSW All Schools Swimming Carnival. He is to be congratulated on an outstanding performance, placing 4th in the 16 Yr Boys 50m Breaststroke.

Tennis

On Saturday, our ISA teams played St Patricks College who are renown for being tough competitors. It was particularly cold on Saturday morning, however the Redlands tennis students turned up to play. Our Firsts led the way with a convincing win, 8-0. It is always great to see the positive attitude and behaviour displayed by all the Redlands Tennis students, win, lose or draw. A pleasure to watch. Our development squads have been hard at work each Saturday morning, working their way through skills that will allow them to play a mini tournament at the end of the season. Just a reminder, the most up to date draw can be found on Redlands Rhino.

Important Dates:

  • Saturday 5 June – Round 6 and the last Saturday of Term 2
  • Thursday 17 June – Secondary School Athletics Carnival – No training

“Athletes: if you do not demand the best from yourself, you are cheating yourself. Find a coach who is unafraid to speak the truth and who says what you need to hear. Improvement comes from learning to accept feedback and to see how it can bring you advantage. Develop grit, learn how to accept criticism and discipline yourself. Stop seeking what is easy.”

  • The Term 3 Sport calendar has been updated and is available on Pulse for your viewing.
  • Representative Sport Absences – if your child is unable to attend a training session or Saturday fixture please complete our Sports Absence form located on Pulse. This will allow Sports department staff and coaches to view prior and post fixtures and allow for another student to be contacted to fill in to make up numbers. As previously mentioned, unexplained absences will effect your child’s gradings. As Representative Sport is not compulsory at Redlands, we expect all students who have committed to a team, to be present at all games and training sessions for the duration of the season.

CIS Hockey

Congratulations to Otis Gait who has returned from Newcastle after representing CIS in Hockey at the NSW PSSA Championships. It was a great experience for Otis and while CIS did not win the plate they had some competitive matches. Well done Otis on this representation.

CIS Rugby

Congratulations to Austin Durrant who has been named as a member of the 2021 CIS Rugby Team. Austin trialed with some tough competition from all the other sport associations and after day 2 was successful. We wish him the best of luck as the CIS team prepares for the NSW PSSA Carnival. Austin has written the following report sharing his experience:

Charlie Reeves and I were nominated to trial for the CIS U12 Rugby union team.  The trials were held at the Waratah’s shared training premises at the University of NSW, where NSW Rugby are building their new combined Waratahs home base and community rugby hub.  We were lucky to play our trials on the field next to where the Waratahs were training, so we were able to watch them in our breaks and they even cheered us from the sidelines at one stage while we were trialling.

On the morning of the first day of trials there were 3 teams of 15, and we did some skills tests before playing some trial games.  The coaches ran the day very efficiently and were clear in their expectations of what they wanted to see throughout the games so as to make the squad – dominant scrummaging, strong tackles, strong running and applying rugby IQ.  The day was a roller coaster of feeling great about having this opportunity to play, but also nerves.

The coaches made sure everyone had good game time opportunity, before selecting two teams out of the morning session and a similar afternoon session combined, to come back for a second day of trials. The trials were non-stop.  It was a good laugh though, as all of us there had something in common – a love of rugby, so we got to mix and catch up with players we knew from other schools and clubs, while also talking tactics and game plans.

On the second day the two teams played a series of high paced and high intensity games. At the end of that I was lucky  enough to be one of the 22 players selected for this years U12 CIS rugby union team that will tour to Mudgee in August to play in the NSW PSSA Primary Rugby Championship.

For me the highlights of the trials were the non-stop game time, getting to play rugby on a bigger stage with friends I know through rugby, and the Waratahs cheering me on as I made a break down the field, only for one of my friends to tackle me just before the tryline.

AFL Paul Kelly Cup

Last week we travelled out to Blacktown Sports Park to participate in the Regional finals of the Paul Kelly Cup with 1 girls team and 1 boys team. Having being granted a wild card entry to the event based on last years results, the teams had been training hard in the weeks leading up to the day. Coach Sam and Chloe have sent through their reports below.

Sam Lewis – Boys Coach:

L 52 – 2 vs Waverly College

A tough loss against the regional and IPSHA champions who had 6 Swans Academy Players in their lineup, this served as a great learning game for the boys. They had many positive passing movements which just lacked the finishing touches at the end to compete on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the resilient defence couldn’t contain all of the Waverly pressure as they built up the margin. George Andrews and Finn Gurney were instrumental, talking goal saving marks and creating offensive opportunities.

L 25-4 vs Blackwell Public School

A tight contest between Blackwell and Redlands saw a late flurry of goals end in an unlucky defeat. Redlands contested well around stoppages and showed great improvement kicking towards leads. Once again the forward line made many opportunities, although, they couldn’t covert in front of goal as well as some unlucky disallowed goals. Byron Mills was key in the middle winning numerous taps in the ruck.

W 37-8 vs Kings Langley

What a way to finish the day! Huge win by Redlands against kings Langley, showing incredible efficiency in front of goal with 6 goals and just the 1 behind. Merrick Schmidt was prolific in the forward line kicking 3 of the goals, and providing great scoring options. Raphael Rolon also had a stellar game assisting many goals from clearances out of the midfield. Great win Boys!

Chloe Davis Girls Coach:

Game 1 vs Engadine West PS

The Redlands girls started strongly, holding the ball in our forward zone for the first few minutes of the game. Zoe Potter was excellent in the ruck, delivering great taps to her midfielders who successfully transitioned the ball into the forward zone. The Engadine West team was strong on the ball, with a team of tall experienced players, and were able to transition quickly to score quick goals before half-time. Maya Turton moved into the back-line in the second half to provide some extra defensive experience and the Redlands Girls improved their defensive efforts by locating an opponent and spoiling marks. As a first game for a very new team, the girls worked well together and enjoyed their first game of the day.

Game 2 vs Holy Family, Kelso

Redlands came up against their most physical opponent in the second game against Holy Family, Kelso. Lila Soste was purposeful with her tackling and spoiling efforts with Cate Andrews and Zara Luce rotating well through the midfield to clear the ball into the forward zone. Amelie Dewar was also able to find some space on the wing in her first game of the day. Redlands struggled to maintain structure and space in this game, with lots of repeat stoppages and crowding of the ball. This was a great learning opportunity for the Redlands girls, who were playing just their second game together.

Game 3 vs Camden South PS

This was the strongest and closest game for the Redlands Girls team, going down to Camden South by 8 points. Lucy Goodsall was a strong in full-forward, with great positioning in front of goals. Katie Jennings moved from the midfield to the backline and was solid in defence, with great locating of her opponent and excellent tackling. Mati Carlyon put her body on the line in numerous tackling efforts and she played the game with determination and purpose. Overall, the Redlands Girls enjoyed their experience of AFL at Paul Kelly Cup and showed great team and school spirit. This was a great introduction for the girls leading into Term 3 IPSHA AFL.

The year-long program is stocked with workshops, performances and access to industry professionals, all geared to support the next generation of theatre-goers and theatre-makers. Ambassadors are united by a common curiosity about contemporary Australian stories, a love of theatre and the motivation to know more! Ambassadors might be curious techies, budding playwrights, outgoing performers, or maybe just love going to see theatre.

Applications for the 2022 Griffin Ambassadors program will open in late 2021. To be notified when this happens, please leave your details here.

Senior Music Festival 2021 – ‘A Night at the Movies’

Oh, what a night! In showcasing the talents of our Secondary School musicians after a long break from live concerts for the Redlands school community, it was such a joy to see over 200 musicians take to the Concourse stage last Friday evening, offering 30 exciting musical items in front of a packed and enthusiastic house! Thank you to all who helped make this memorable evening happen.

The evening also paid fitting tribute to our departing Coordinator of Music, Darren Kuilenburg as we all rallied to sing Thank you for the Music one last time. We wish him all the best in his next chapter.

You can see more photos from the Senior Music Festival at the bottom of this page.

SMF Celebration – Wednesday 9 June

Senior Vocal Competition – Friday 11 June

Congratulations to our finalists who are no doubt diligently preparing to perform in the Senior Vocal Competition for 2021 in the Edwards Auditorium from 6pm next Friday. Though there is no cost for attendance, in light of our Covid management, parents hoping to attend will need to be ticketed. Performers may each bring two guests to share in the evening and these two tickets can be secured through Trybooking.

Our adjudicator for this year will be the magnificent Clarissa Spata – a world respected performer across classical and contemporary genres. Most recently you may have seen her as a quarterfinalist on The Voice or performing with Opera Australia.

We look forward to her valuable contribution to this fantastic evening.

Rehearsal Attendance & Notice of Absence

Thank you to those students who are consistently punctual and organised for their rehearsals each week. The recent showcases are testament to your evident dedication and commitment to your own learning journey as musicians and this is so very admirable. Punctual attendance at all ensembles is an expectation of all students enrolled in co-curricular ensembles. Please do remember to contact juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au or seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au respectively if you can foresee an absence or if you have missed a rehearsal due to illness.

Duty of Care

Please be mindful that for early morning rehearsals, the Music Department’s duty of care commences just 10 minutes before the scheduled start of any before-school ensemble. Though we are aware many families have work and other commitments to manage, especially on the Junior Campus, please do ensure that your child isn’t left on school grounds without supervision before our communicated rehearsal start time.

Want to join an Ensemble? Thinking about exploring some Private Vocal or Instrumental lessons?

Please see the Music section of Pulse to download the signup forms for all our co-curricular and extra-curricular offerings from P-12. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact our team via juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au or seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au and we will be more than happy to assist you.

Have a great coming week.
